For Harry’s Birthday, Ginny would try baking Harry a cake. She wasn’t good at it and the edges were always burnt, but Harry would always laugh and say that it was the thought that counted.

As he was Harry’s little helper in the kitchen, Albus would help Ginny by reading out the recipe. He would correct her whenever she was about to make a mistake and as he grew older, he would take charge. 

Lily would be there, waiting to decorate the cake with flowers made from icing as well as fairies, gnomes, golden snitches and a ziggy zaggy pattern that she would say is Harry’s scar.

James was mostly there to lick out the bowl. Although he would help by getting out the utensils and pretend to have a sword fight with them.

Although Harry would say that he didn’t want anything for his birthdays, Ginny could tell that he was touched by their gesture and she did it to remind Harry that he’s loved now.

Summary

Ron wants to tell him, again, that he’s not focused, that he’s not planning this whole thing through properly, that he keeps missing things. That they need more structure, that he wouldn’t have lost his temper like he had if only they had the safety of a strategy.

But he also wants to say that they’re kids, they’re just fucking kids, and what the hell are they doing, how are they supposed to fix this, and he just wants to go home, and have a decent fucking meal, and not think about how Harry and Hermione are getting closer, and how even though he chose Harry first, Harry always seems to choose someone else.

Harry’s fifteenth birthday had been spent alone and angry.  Looking back a year later, he could remember how miserable he had been, how bad of a day it had felt.  A year later, he couldn’t help but wish he could go back to his fifteenth, even if it meant feeling that frustration all over again.  He hadn’t known at the time how lonely he could feel, even surrounded by loving friends.

On his fifteenth birthday, Harry had gotten a letter from Sirius full of love.  A letter with promises of “see you soon” and unspoken agreements that one day, birthdays would be celebrated together.  His present last year, whether he acknowledged it or not, had been the security of family in a way he had never had it before.  In a way he would never have it again.

Now, on his sixteenth birthday, his present is the promise that family of that variety was lost to him forever, not a single birthday that he was able to remember ever celebrated with Sirius, and no possibility of future years to look forward to.

Harry hadn’t known, last year, how lonely grief could feel.

On his sixteenth birthday, Harry had never longed more for a birthday spent alone.
