headcanon with evidence: shelagh turner is autistic/neurodivergent!

intense interests: shelagh's special interest is obviously the science of midwifery. she's only 30 years old at the beginning of the series, but already her expertise is virtually on par with the older nuns. her deep knowledge is very well respected by her patients and colleagues. she also LOVES to talk about it, you can see her face light up every time she has a chance.

hyperfocus: when shelagh is completely absorbed in a task, she struggles to notice anything else around her. for example, in the very first episode, she doesn't even notice jenny is in the room when she comes to inform sister julienne about her latest delivery. when sister julienne introduces her to jenny, she only very briefly acknowledges her, and then goes back to talking about work, which ties into -

struggling with social cues: in scenes with lots of shelagh dialogue, notice how she struggles to make prolonged eye contact. a notable exception is sister julienne and, later, patrick, but this makes sense. a lot of autistic people struggle to make eye contact generally, but have a few "safe people" with whom it's a lot easier. shelagh also struggles with boundaries, indicated by her lack of ability to ask for help when she needs it or say no when she's asked to do something. she can also be very blunt and forthright about her opinions, such as when she tells jenny to "please stop wittering on about vegetables, i could not care less." she wasn't trying to be rude, she was just indicating her disinterest in the subject in a very to-the-point way. also, when she was infodumping about the bri-nylon nightie, and CLEARLY misunderstanding cues that patrick thought she was extremely sexy in that little get-up 😳😏

stimming: shelagh is CONSTANTLY stimming. most notable are her hand movements, she fidgets with her hands a lot, and when she sits at a table, she often keeps her hands below the surface. i believe this is so she can subtly stim without attracting attention. oh, and you know the autistic stereotype of velociraptor arms? well, i give you...

masking: she's a social chameleon. her speech mannerisms were much more formal and clipped while she was still in the religious life, because she was holding herself to a certain standard, even though it's not necessarily required (look at sister evangelina). i think she was trying to model her behaviour and mannerisms on sister julienne, which is SO COMMON for autistic women to copy the behaviour of someone they admire in order to blend. she also "mirrors" body language, seen here. (both have their hands in their pockets, their legs are the same width apart. also peep my babygirl not making eye contact AGAIN while he's directly looking at her face!)

exaggerated facial expressions and emotive tone of voice: it's a common misconception that autistic people always have monotonous voices and flat facial affect. some do, but just as many are the complete opposite and actually have really varied expressions and tones. ctm fans who don't like shelagh tend to point this fact out about her, but to me it just makes her relatable, because i'm a really emotive autistic person too!

also, this is just anecdotal, but all of my autistic friends who watch ctm agree with me that shelagh is most likely autistic. and we're really good at identifying autistic traits in others.

Public perceptions of Sara as a neurodivergent in love

As far as Sara’s romance arc goes in Young Royals, something I’ve thought a lot about is how there’s this ableist tendency to infantilize autistic people, and part of this ableist infantilization comes down to downplaying or ignoring or erasing autistic people’s sexualities. Luckily, there’s more shows recently that have pushed back against that in some form—Everything’s Gonna Be Okay and Heartbreak High being among them. (Everything’s Gonna Be Okay even has an ace autistic character to nuance things all the more.) Young Royals first and foremost pushes back by giving Sara a love story in her own right, full of as many ups and downs and complex turns of character that Wille and Simon’s relationship does.

There’s a second thing that I think might be going on, and it’s subtle enough to me that I want to see how season 3 plays out before I can say “this is for sure a thing that’s happening in the show.” And that is the way that other characters respond to Sara’s potential for romantic and sexual attraction, whether they’re downplaying it or actually seeing the reality of it. Now, Sara’s Manor House pals at least acknowledge her potential to feel attraction and be in a relationship, and that’s good, but it feels sort of… abstract? And while Sara does lack the experience the other girls have, they tend to presume a level of innocence and naïveté on her part that doesn’t quite match up with Sara’s more complicated reality. (Also, this may just be my bias speaking, but Fredrika’s comment about Sara’s virginity particularly grates on me. Fredrika plays it off as a compliment but I don’t think it’s meant to be kind.) Meanwhile, when it comes to Sara’s interactions with Simon, we see her teasing him about boys and boyfriends, but he doesn’t seem to respond to her in the same way. Not out of malicious intent I don’t think, but it was something I noticed in their interaction.

It also strikes me that Sara and August were in a secret relationship all season 2 and as far as we know so far, no one noticed. Neither of them is very subtle in how they’re texting the other one and they’re both always sneaking off “to go get a textbook” or whatever. Boys have walked by Sara as she’s walked through the halls of Forest Ridge dormitory. It wouldn’t be that hard to figure out! Felice lives with Sara and doesn’t suspect secret boyfriends or anything. I’m curious to see what the Hillerska rumor mill is like in season 3—whether anyone did pick up on the little sargust tryst like they did the wilmon one, or whether Hillerska students failed to notice because they don’t see Sara as being inherently connected to romance as someone like say, Felice is. Naturally Sara’s class background and gender play a role in that as well, but identities always interact and we can’t leave neurodivergence out of the equation.

We talk a lot about how Sara’s neurodivergence impacted the way she got into a relationship, mostly in terms of how her neurodivergent traits impact her sense of morality and the way she reads certain social signals. What I haven’t seen people talk about as much is how other people in her life perceive her neurodivergence and her capacity for romantic and/or sexual relationships. I’m curious, too, to know how intentionally the show is addressing this. As season 3 deals with the fallout of season 2, I wonder to what extent other characters might try to pigeonhole Sara as childlike or not in full understanding of her own feelings, as they try to make sense of what happened with Sara and August. And I wonder to what extent Sara will have to fight back and claim her own agency in relation to these feelings, even as she’s left this relationship behind.

i used to have a ‘crush’ on a boy all the way from 1st to 4th grade, until one day in 4th grade i and another girl that liked him asked him which one of us he likes more. he said he liked her more. i instantly got over him, like you could snap your fingers and that’s how quickly i was like “oh oki!” i wasn’t upset, jealous, anything, i just immediately got over him. that’s definitely a memory i associate with my identity.

i forced myself to have crushes on people because i was close to them or thought they were beautiful all over the course of the last past couple of years. from my online best friend, to random classmates. boys, girls, neither, both, didn’t matter.

i used to label myself as bi and pan (different times in my life) because i romantically cared for people equally. which i now realize is not at all

the reason i still identify as a lesbian to some degree is because, you guessed it, i still have some degree of attraction to girls. i feel much more comfortable around girls because of my experiences with boys. nothing bad has happened per say, i’m fine; they just tend to fall so fucking quickly, bro. and i know it feels very ignorant to say this, but i just wish boys would leave me alone, i wish people didn’t have crushes on me. i consider myself fairly attractive both physically and mentally (wow so modest i know! but trust me it took a long time for me to think like this) and i tend to attract. way more allos than i would like

Thinking about a Ghostbusters AU AGAIN.

Byler as Stantz and Spengler, Lucas as Venkman.

Mike’s got that autistic rizz. He collects molds, spores, and fungus, he wears those signature Spengler glasses paired with some sweater vests and bow ties. He’s nerdy and weird, and when El comes on as their receptionist and tries to flirt with him, he brushes her off and changes the subject. He makes dumb science jokes that nobody laughs at (except Will), and he laughs obnoxiously with one of those breathy, snorting laughs.

Will is his partner in crime. They both come running when there’s sign of paranormal activity, equipped with their homemade devices and their blinky lights. Will appears more normal- he’s attractive, he’s nice, he’s quiet- but he’s insufferable once you get to know him. He’ll talk for hours about the things that pique his interest, and he’s blunt. If he thinks someone’s an asshole, he’ll say so. He and Mike tend to have conversations nobody else can really understand, throwing around big words and munching on cheap takeout on the crummy old couch in the firehouse. (Sometimes, when Lucas is unlucky, he walks in on them munching on each other’s faces as well.)

Lucas is arguably the most “normal” of all of them. He’s personable, he’s charming. He actually does flirt with girls, which doesn’t go well for him because a lot of the ones they run into are more interested in Mike or Will. He’s a little bit of an asshole (who can blame him? He spends all his time getting dragged around by two nerds on a ghost chase), but he’s also their people guy. Once they start getting business, he’s the one making house calls and going on talk shows.

Just thinking about their first successful bust. Lucas, covered in slime and miserably wiping it from his face. Will is absolutely losing his shit and jumping up and down. Mike pushes his goggles up out of his eyes, and he has that darkened smudge over his face that leaves him looking like a raccoon. His hair is all standing on end, and he’s holding the trap up, watching it smoke and pop. Will bounces his way over, giddily watching the trap swing back and forth, and then he’s grabbing Mike’s face and pressing a kiss to his cheek, unfazed by the grime.

Mike holds the trap out of the way and hooks an arm around Will’s waist to pull him in for a proper kiss, and Lucas rolls his eyes, shaking the goop off his hands and letting it splatter onto the floor.

“I’m all good, thanks for asking.”

For an autistic Atiny, can you please go into detail about Mingi's type based on fancall deductions (and maybe Yunho if you have time, just because I'm extra curious). I can't really tell the difference between attraction vs. politeness based on body behavior/tone of voice. It's important to know that these are screenshots from Atiny's who has numerous fancalls with the members so there's an established rapport.

But a lot of the attraction is shown through the eye contact and Mingi particularly bites his lip when he's speaking to an Atiny that he finds physically attractive.

So, the two screenshots with Mingi are with the same Atiny and he blatantly said that she's his type and I think the first pic says it all.

Wooyoung will preen his hair a lot when he finds an Atiny attractive, this screenshot is also with an Atiny that has multiple fancalls with Wooyoung and this moment is when Wooyoung commented on how nice the Atiny's hair looked.

I've noticed hair is a big comment marker, they tend to compliment Atiny's hair a lot.

It wasn't hard to guess that Pete's into Michael. But once he came out as aromantic, Pete decided to hide it up. Pete, however, wasn't fully aware that "aromantic" stands for "lack of romantic attraction OR feeling much less of it". Therefore that's why Michael confessed first.

S09E07 Band AU

Pete plays bass; once he tried to teach Michael basic chords. He sat behind Michael and embraced him, instructing his fingers. However, Michael failed to learn anything, so he's just a vocalist. But Pete doesn't sing too good, too.

Early CuRed + Henriel

Before the confession, Henrietta and Michael used to be in a queerplatonic relationship. Pete and other thought they are actually in a romantic relationship before Michael came out of the closet. Meanwhile Henrietta was just encouraging Michael to confess by telling him stuff about Pete; what he likes etc.

Pete would make matching rings out of can pins for him and Michael, while Michael would make bead bracelets/necklaces for him with cute (and goth!) words to describe Pete or their relationship. They also would have matching necklaces with their blood in a little jar.

Pete is a self harm survivor. He used to cut himself due to his family problems; his mother left him, and his dad doesn't care about him, he's also an alcohol addict - that's also why he doesn't drink at all, he just smokes. The cuts aren't too deep, but sometimes he also keeps doing this in secret. After a longer while in a relationship with Michael, he confessed that he still harms himself sometimes. He expected Michael to laugh at him, but instead, he simply hugged and comforted Pete, telling him that he supports him.

Pete plays online chess and watches chess tournaments on YouTube. So randomly. He never admits it, though. It may be one of his special interests, because he's autistic.

Rooms headcanons:

- Pete:

Black walls painted by himself, total mess, a cheap PC station, many binders in the only bookcase, some torn goth posters on the walls. His room would be absolutely tiny, he wouldn't really have a bed - he uses a mattress instead. It's mostly pressed against the wall if it's not used, so it doesn't disturb him during his daily basis. Also many, maaany coffee mugs + his own little coffee station - electric kettle, two reusable mugs and a big bag of black coffee.

-Michael:

His room is pretty big, the top of his house is divided into two rooms - his own one and his parents'. He has that roof thingy and a bed under it, so he tends to hit his head on accident while waking up. The walls are basically wooden, his parents don't really let him paint them or just make his room too dark. Therefore, he usually has his only small window closed and obscured. He has few posters on the walls, a bigger wooden closet with a mirror on its door and some stickers on that mirror. He also has a bookcase with a whole collection of gothic themed books, he hasn't read half of them though. He has a shelf for music cds. He owns a laptop too. + a little corner that he usually covers up. It's a religious corner that his mother made him keep - basically a Buddha figure and some flowers on a table.

-Firkle:

Most sane room. Light, preppy and just conformist. However, Firkle tried to make it more goth by painting some goth quotes on the walls. Their mother punishes them later then when she sees it and has to wash it all off or paint the wall white again. They also have a light teal carpet, a mirror and a desk for their iPad. They collect roblox figures and invader zim merch.

Pete hates when his hair isn't styling well, and Michael loves ruffling his hair. Pete wants to kill and kiss him at the same time when he does that.

Michael and Pete hold hands in public and call people posers and conformists while doing this.

Michael would smell like a comfy washing powder and soap (before cigs), then Pete would smell like coffee and that one cheap shower gel for men (before cigs ofc).

Autistic Pete;

When Pete's having a hard time communicating and expressing his real feelings, Michael usually explains it to others talking in a professional language, sometimes also in glasses. However, other people don't really care about it.

Michael is a total cat person - he also has his own one, called Milo. Pete sometimes comes over just to see his cat, not Michael.

Pete works in Seven Eleven, so he has some of his own money he can spend in any way he wants to. He also spends some of it on small gifts for Michael.

Pete is chubby. He has some fat on his underbelly and thighs, which is one of his bigger insecurities. Michael, however, is anorexic. Michael doesn't care about Pete's appearance, he even likes it, but neither he does care about his own health and weight. Pete takes care of Michael and prepares him meals really often then. It's not the best cuisine, but it's still something!

Michael has a driving license and shares a car with his father.

For some reason, Michael is a big fan of cinnamon cookies, that's also why Pete often attempts to prepare these for him; the attempts aren't successfully most of the time.

Pete would enjoy metal music too, but wouldn't be a part of the community. He would just listen to it sometimes, not considering himself a fan.

While kissing, Pete is the loudest one - he never can get used to the feeling of something on his lips for longer than 5 seconds, that's why he usually gulps or moans (in a non sexual way ofc.)

Michael was the first person Pete has ever invited to come over, probably due to his housing conditions and the fact he lives in a trailer - he was just embarrassed.

So I saw you headcanon Egon as autistic and wanted to know what kinds of stims you headcanon him to do/have! Also as a bonus what kind of fidgets do you think would work best for him? Because we all know those are hot and miss and not everything works for everybody 😂

It's funny, I had a bit about him being on the spectrum to be widely accepted fanon in the last ask, but trimmed it bc I'd already written a novel.

Stims are one thing I've actually put a lot of thought into as far as his character, cos like you said, they differ from person to person. I stim very differently from my spouse, lmao.

Finger tapping is one that he actually does in the first film; he's tapping his fingers on the surveyor's tape measure he's holding when they first got to the firehouse, and I feel like that's also pretty common. This was also my jumping-off point for a few of his other physical stims.

So alongside finger tapping, I often see him doing the classic idle leg bounce. Both are mundane and fairly ubiquitous even among NT people, so he doesn't feel the need to actively resist or stop himself. Both motions tap into his sense of proprioception in a very pleasant way. Something about the motion coupled with the resistance of changing direction rapidly just pings his brain Just Right. Another thing that stems from that, but one that he's learned to hide after one too many times getting mocked for it is dancing. I hc he learned to dance as a kid because well, in the late 40s and into the 50s that's just. What one learned to do, and in the first film it's stated that he and the others danced with some people at a club called The Rose. He enjoys the movement for the same reasons he taps his fingers or bounces his leg; there's motion through space, a sort of resistive feeling when there's a change in direction due to inertia, the impact of his feet on the ground. But he only dances whenever he's sure he's alone, so nobody really knows about it and they actually assume he can't dance, especially because he dislikes having to dance with a complete stranger, so his movements become stilted and almost robotic because the proximity to someone he's unfamiliar with.

You get him in the same room with someone he's comfortable with though and it's a different story >:)

Dancing as a stim also leads very nicely into his auditory stim. He's a Song Repeater of the highest caliber, and the music that tickles his brain is very much not what people expect. He tends to gravitate toward songs that have sounds more toward the lower ranges that feel 'fuller' sound-wise. Songs like Don't Bring Me Down by ELO, Gimme Some Lovin' by Spencer Davis Group, and The Loco-Motion by Grand Funk Railroad is one he listened to so much in college that Ray will change the station or turn off the radio outright if it comes on. But anything with a sort of 'heavy' or 'bouncy' feel to it, especially if it has repetitive or broad cyclic elements is going to get his attention most of the time.

He's also got a tactile stim with a bit of a story behind it, but I'll save that for another ask bc it's 1: Long and 2: Involves my headcanons for the kind of people his parents were. So, in lieu of any sort of purpose-made fidget toy, he's almost always got a rocker switch in his pocket:

The motion of clicking it back and forth is very pleasant to him, and he also likes the feel of the switch's smooth, concave profile and sometimes just runs his thumb along the curve rather than actually clicking the switch over. It's small enough to keep in his pocket or even just hold in his hand while he messes with it, and doesn't attract attention. And most importantly it's not loud. I definitely feel like he's one of those people who would have to be physically restrained from attempting to murder the pen-clicker in the room because it feels like someone stabbing him in the brain with a pencil repeatedly. Bad Noise(tm).

What's Ash's role in the story? Ash is a human(ish) barbarian and the protagonist of the Tigerverse series. He is the current partner of Evius, who was previously romantically involved with Ash’s whumper: Ozmund Greenthorn. Ash was originally created as a character for an ongoing DnD campaign, though the stories on this blog mostly divert from the canon of that game.

Fun Facts about Ash:

Due to his tiger heritage and upbringing, Ash can communicate with cats and (with some effort) most other animals. He’s also picked up bits and pieces of other languages based on whomever he interacts with most (including a little Elven from Kane and Infernal from Evius).

Ash, like all tigers, is red-green colorblind. He only learned this after being with the party for some time—he didn’t realize he had orange fur. In fact, Evius’ coppery tiefling skintone doesn’t look much different to Ash than his human disguise. He can, however, distinguish shades of blue and yellow. (I’m just now realizing he probably doesn’t realize Mouse’s hair is pink. Bummer.)

Even in his human form, Ash has heightened animal-like senses which often overwhelm him. For that reason, he tends to dislike crowded areas and sticks close to Evius or Kane in the city.

He does not have a barbed penis, but man do we love to joke about it lol

His intelligence is kind of paradoxical. He didn’t have any formal education, and just about everything he knows about the “civilized” world came from Kane, so he’s not exactly “book-learned.” But, for the same reasons, he doesn’t have a lot of social knowledge either. His intellect is mostly centered around his knowledge of the natural world and survival, as well as his keen skills of observation and problem-solving. When his intelligence increased from the mindflayer tadpole, it mostly just made it easier for him to learn things and put concepts together; it didn’t impart any factual knowledge on him. Almost like he had ADHD and got adderall for the first time lol

That being said, he did become more aware of all the social rules he hadn’t noticed or cared about before. 6. When did they realize they loved each other? ALRIGHT. alright. I actually have this one kind of planned out in advance. They did it at different points. Marik fell first without question, it was when he met face-to-face with Joey that it solidified fully. In my head, it absolutely goes: Joey: "(says some kind of incredibly lame pun, e.g. 'I just had to hit that thug on the head with my Duel Disk. I guess you could say I decked him, eh? Eh??)" -> Marik, internally: "Oh man he's so stupid I NEED him so bad." However it then sort of simultaneously both soured and got stronger when Joey broke free of his mind control. It's a kind of paradox; Marik is in love with Joey because he can't control him, but Marik absolutely hates Joey because he can't control him, but Joey isn't interesting when he's not fully himself, but Marik can't do anything with him when he isn't mind controlled. Complex! After the Battle City affair, I think Marik just sort of resigns himself to thinking, "OK, this was just kind of a weird crush I have on a guy who probably hates me now, so I guess I'll just have to cope with this alone until it goes away."

By contrast, I think Joey had kind of a weird relationship to it; he had kind of an attraction to "Namu" as a pretty and nice guy he met, but it was just sort of like. A flirtation. Minor problem. Still other fish in the sea and all that. After Joey figured out he was Marik, though, I think he repressed any and all romantic attraction down as far as possible, with the exception that some of the reason he was pissed originally was just being kind of mad he had that crush at first. Anyways Joey only realizes he's in love with Marik after Some Time (could be anywhere from a few months to years, depending on if he goes to visit Rishid sooner or later), a very awkward reunion, a week-long fight, getting eventually chewed out by Anzu in those "JOEY WHEELER WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU???" talks she likes to give out, stealing a car to go drive out in the middle of the desert to be alone for a minute, having the Moment of Realization and nearly crashing said stolen car in his panic. Woops!

8. What’s one way their personalities compliment one another? Oughghgh okay so. I think it's really interesting how their personalities are both so similar but so different. They're both very stubborn and pretty righteous, while simultaneously having a ton of old built-up guilt. However, they have a lot of differences too. Joey is hot-blooded and willing to pick a fight with just about anyone versus Marik being more of a "master manipulator" type that prefers to let other people settle the score. Joey also tends to be extroverted and makes friends pretty easily if he doesn't freak them out with how passionate he is about, well, everything, while Marik is um. A little stilted when it comes to social interactions (I am betting good money "Namu" usually got by on good looks and brainwashing people to vouch for him whenever that particular character got used). So all this is to say, I think they have potential to actually help each other out a lot when they work together - Marik keeps Joey from making rash decisions or helps him find smarter ways to get around problems, and Joey keeps Marik from getting too isolated and better at dealing with his own problems instead of letting Rishid and Ishizu fix them for him (again).

I'm going to be honest with you I don't know if this counts but if visionshipping also happens I think they would have a fascinating relationship. 8. What’s one way their personalities compliment one another? The irony of Atem being a literal ghost and yet significantly more down-to-Earth than Ryou is never lost on me. I think that most people outside of their relationship tend to dismiss Ryou as being very quiet and introverted, but he's just shy lol - once they're just around one another, Ryou is definitely the more energetic one that is absolutely having incredibly bad ideas, and Atem is going along with them because Ryou is his dear boyfriend and so can do no wrong and have no incredibly bad ideas. right? right???? 11. Which member is more physically affectionate? They are both touchstarved as Hell so they're significantly touchier than your average couple anyways but Hmm. maybe Atem? I feel like Atem goes with constant but minor physical affection (holding hands, casually leaning against him while playing games or watching movies, etc.) whereas Ryou doesn't go for physical affection a ton but when he does Watch Out. One time Atem had to go away for a tournament for like two weeks and when he got back Ryou pounced on him like Hobbes and rested his chin on top of his head with his arms wrapped around Atem like a clingy octopus for the next 24 hours. 34. Do they give each other nicknames? this is a tough one. I feel like if we have a pre-Millennium World situation, then Ryou def had a nickname for Atem to try and differentiate him from Yugi- I'm not sure what it would be though. Incredibly tempted to say Mister Ghost/Mister Spirit just because Ryou is a Polite Young Man. I have a hard time picturing them using a ton of nicknames, but inside Atems head there are definitely five billion poetic epithets of courtly romance he uses for Ryou like:

He's so quiet because he doesn't know what (is appropriate) to say a lot of the time and he learned very young that it's better to say nothing than to say something that one of the bigger boys will think is "smart" and get hit for it

He's also quiet because it takes a lot of concentration for him to tell what's happening with body language and social cues. Constantly monitoring how people are standing, where they are looking, their facial expressions and what they mean, is energy-consuming.

He mimics characteristics of the people around him. This is why he is so inconspicuous and forgettable, because he will see what other people are doing/saying and copy that, so he blends into a group. Body language is a conscious choice for him, and like above, it's easiest to just not be noticed.

(He also accidentally mimics accents, he will occasionally spend time with Lydia and pick up a little Limmatan accent)

Sometimes people's characteristics stick if he spends enough time with them. For example, he says "what" with identical inflection to the twins, and it messes Hal around when he's not looking. (His repertoire of weary sighs are entirely his own)

He likes to knit because it's so rhythmic, and he deliberately chooses needles that make little clicks because he loves the sound.

When he joins the Herons he's pleasantly taken aback to see that no one will care if he says something a little strange or fails to pick up on a social cue that everyone else does. He's hardly the strangest person there anyway.

He probably couldn't say something weirder than anything the twins could come up with if he tried, and people tend to say things out loud for Ingvar's benefit as he can't see people's body language well, so Edvin also won't miss out on silent cues

He and Lydia become good friends quite quickly because they bond over their shared inability to know what to do in social situations (autistic Lydia as well?? who knows)

He is prone to assuming that things that he experiences are universal, and is astonished to find that non-verbal social cues are intuitive to most people, and that in fact most people "just know" if something is acceptable to say or not

On that note he is absolutely shook to discover that sexual/romantic attraction is inadvertent and just happens to people (aro-ace Edvin supremacy)

hi! :D you've said before that you see mcu loki as ND-coded, and i'm curious about your specific thoughts on that. personally, i've mostly thought about this in terms of acquired mental illness stemming from trauma, but if i'm interpreting you correctly, you see him as innately neurodivergent? which is a fun + interesting take. are you thinking of a specific diagnosis, and/or is there a specific moment that stands out to you as ND Behaviour, or is it more of an overall vibe?

It started by thinking of Loki being ND-coded metaphorically, but I think he shows some behaviors. I will be breaking this down into actual behaviors and metaphors. I have ADHD, so I tend to skew his diagnosis towards that or AuDHD (and I have a mutual that thinks BPD also fits rather well and they're welcome to join in, lol).

Metaphors (movies):

1. The Jotun reveal. Aliens and changelings (both of which Loki is in cannon to Asgard) are common in metaphors to describe autism. From both the ND’s perspective as being in “Another planet” and from the NT’s perspective.

“A persistent trope in some autism communities is that autistic people are aliens, or, symmetrically, that non-autistic people seem like aliens to autists. Some autists are attracted to the metaphor of the alien to describe their own condition, or to say that they find other people alien (Hacking, 2009).”

“In addition to failure to thrive, before the development of modern medicine and psychiatry, it is very likely that any number of childhood disorders were interpreted as stolen children. Several modern authors have suggested that, in pre-scientific eras, children born with autism and other developmental disorders were probably considered changelings (Ashliman 1997; Wing and Potter 2002). By the late nineteenth century, science had begun to provide non-supernatural explanations for children who did not thrive or otherwise did not meet the normal expectations for a healthy infant, and belief in changelings faded. ”

2. Loki does not fit in at Asgard, the only home he’s known. His friends are actually Thor’s rather than his, and seem to tolerate him rather than like him.

3. Loki also gets blamed for misdeeds without good evidence: The W4 start suspecting a crown prince based on an enemy’s words and they assume Loki wants to harm Asgard. I think it’s important to note that they don’t assume he just wants the crown; they assume in his very short reign, that he’ll harm Asgard, which is never in his plans. And it’s unlikely they cared about Jotunheim since they wanted Thor back right away.

A parallel to being ND is that people distrust and even villainize you due to your mannerisms (e.g. “weird and quiet”). And I’ve talked about how I think Asgard promotes a very ridiculously straight forward mannerisms on its population to make self-policing easier. So Loki’s mannerisms must have clashed with the general population’s for them to distrust them so easily.

4. Loki’s main power-set being illusions, and unbeknownst to him, being changed into something he wasn’t born as (Jotun -> Asgardian), is a power-set analogous to masking (i.e. the process through which NDs camouflage themselves to fit in better).

Masking involves a lot of rehearsing and suppression to act in a more socially acceptable way. → Loki also needs to be useful to be appreciated

5. Thor being preferred for acting in ways deemed more socially acceptable by Asgard and Odin. A personal experience from me is getting shit to this day about how I was “so difficult as a toddler, unlike your brother!” and some mean comment about how I made life hell because they couldn’t take me to public places.

Some traits Loki showcases (and seem relatable to my ADHD-ass):

1. Tendency to fidget (in the movies and series). I think it’s even more noticeable in the series, where he’s doing random shit with stamps and hammers while he speaks to people (S2E1 talking with OB). It’s like he can’t stay still.

2. I pulled something very similar to the salad scene around an older mentor figure. It was rice I kept squishing in my hand while going off in a rant. My former mentor found my behavior amusing, for the most part, and never let me live that down.

3. Tendency to info-dump about how his magic works.

4. Poor impulse control (Loki series, gets drunk in a train, and cut Sif’s hair just because ← I HC he wanted to sabotage the relationship out of fear of vulnerability).

And that’s on top of the trauma-based extreme fear of abandonment he showcases in pretty much everything he’s been in.

I have a bone to pick and people are not going to like it.

There is a Dr by the name of Nicholas Groth. He writes books on the psychology of rapists, more often specifically child rapists.

I've been looking for information on him for a decent chunk of time. I can't find a picture of him, I can't find who he is married too, nothing. Now the picture isn't important but the fact that he's supposedly been alive since 1937 would make him 86. And not one photo. Which I personally find suspicious. What's more, not only can I not find a picture of him, but his study on child predators has this weird problem as seen below.

So a few things about this piece lacking context. I've studied psychology for around 12-14 years now. Off and on. Partly out of general interest and partly to take some of my own power back.

And the above things here bother me.

Suppose for a second that the first part of the line, "They see the boy as a projected representation of themselves". Ok. So let's assume that for a moment. This would imply, that rather than abusing the child, that the predator is abusing themselves. However, he goes on to state that "-and therefore find themselves more comfortable (especially sexually) in the company of children..." Which would imply they view themselves as a child. These two things are mutually exclusive in most cases because in order to view someone as you while viewing yourself as them, takes a really stupid level of disassociation. Or being extremely autistic.

The fact that Groth here obfuscates the possibility that there are predators that are gay. And the manner in which he does this is by more or less saying that, "...molesters see themselves in their victims, but would not be attracted to adult males."

So full stop. Is Dr. Groth gay? Why would I ask this question. Well the obvious point here would be a conflict of interest in these studies in regards to sexuality of child molesters. But there's more contradiction here. And this is a clear thing that is not compatible when you are correct in your usage of language.

"See yourself in their victims" and "See the boy as a projected representation" are not the same thing. The may sound the same. But a person doing a research paper as a Dr. does not make this mistake.

When you see yourself IN the victim it implies that you see similarities between you and the victim.

However, when you see yourself projected as a representation, you are more or less seeing yourself AS the victim you intend to abuse.

No matter how subtle this difference is there IS one and it's not semantic. It's a meaningful difference. So the reason I call this out is because his research is a bit all over the place when it comes to the sexuality of predators. Reason being. He makes the claim that, "These men are heterosexual in their everyday lives, but assault kids as a form to take power." And while one part of that is true, there's more to it.

If you view yourself as a child or find yourself (more comfortable with kids sexually) psychologically speaking, if it's a man who targets only little boys, what does that imply? Well if we are answering honestly it could be a number of things. The man could be a bisexual but was never fully comfortable with sex as an adult, and thus forth upon having access to children, decided to live out the desires he had.

Also another interesting piece of information. Predators are often victims themselves. Sometimes they grow and aversion to the sex that victimized them, sometimes they don't. And when it's person of the same sex that does it to you. What tends to happen is that you run from it. Sometimes a lot harder than if it was someone of the opposite sex. Thing is if you look into it closely, one of the things that you find is that gay men who stay closeted for a very long time will do their best to come across as straight. Some men even have wives and kids along the way while not being sexually into women in that way. Why? Because they force themselves to be "Straight".

One of the largest reasons why this is a phenomenon is because they are trying to deny feeling that made them feel powerless. Which is to say, they as themselves when they got stunted mentally, emotionally, etc is a closer version of the real them. And YES it's horrific. To be attracted to kids in that way. However, after looking at all this research and not being able to find a shred of decent info on this Dr. I'm having doubts about the findings. Mostly because they are contrary to those I've found, and those of several of my friends in the field. Not everything is wrong mind you. However, there seems to be a number of things that don't properly add up.

And before anyone gets the idea that I'm calling all LGBT people or otherwise, all "Predators", I am not. However, As I've stated before. when a male predator goes out of his way to target only little boys, that in and of itself is a homosexual act. The man may well be a bisexual. But the age of the person involved does not change the sex they are. However, yes there are cases where there are predators that target both boys and girls. And if they view themselves as a child, they "as that child" are a bisexual. Even though they are also a predator.

And look. Anyone can be a predator no matter their orientation. But understand me when I say this. This researcher seems to be a fucking phantom. And given the subject matter they have produced, I don't like that. Several conclusions seemed rushed and don't fully add up.

hildegard. since he travels around a lot, he tends to eat stuff that can last longer and that's easy to have on the road. bread, cheeses, dried meats and fruits. tony. well. he has a notable and unfortunate dietary requirement, so generally speaking he just kind of does a Snake Meal of human flesh and whatever he has on hand, either leftovers or takeout or something he makes himself, and that keeps him going for about a week. girl dinner.

What is the process that you headcanon Egon to go through when he realizes he's actually just into something and it's not a "normal" thing? And maybe what are some of those things you think he would be into if you're comfortable with sharing? 👉👈

So, this is a really good ask, because the concept of "normal" is relative/subjective. It all depends on the person and their perspective, experiences, life circumstances and a whole shitton of other factors.

This went long, but I promise the background is important to understanding the process I see him going through, so more and spicy headcanons under the cut!

As far as sexual orientation, I hc Egon is demisexual (and also Pan, but that's for another ask), so sexual attraction doesn't hit until romantic attraction has set in and - for him specifically - been present for a while.

I also hc that he hasn't been too lucky as far as romance or sex. Being on the spectrum, he tends to come off as weird, quiet, awkward and very intense in a way that makes most people varying degrees of uncomfortable, and he himself isn't comfortable with closeness unless he knows the other person well.

Between that and being demi, he's had maybe a handful of romances that fell apart pretty fast due to conflicts of personality; they always wanted him to change and be someone he's not capable of being (in other words, not autistic) and in one case, dropped him like a hot rock because they assumed he was packing serious pipe when really he's about at the extreme upper limit of 'average' at best.

None of these relationships ever lasted long enough for actual sexual attraction to set in, so the two or three times he was intimate, it was pretty 'meh' for him for a variety of reasons: lack of sexual attraction to his partner, partners who didn't respect him, and lack of a friendship to facilitate trust and comfort, especially wrt physical closeness. He also pursued the romance not necessarily because he truly wanted to, but because that's just what one is supposed to do, right??

His last experience in particular hurt a lot, specifically because the abrupt rejection was down to the other person only being interested in a big dick, and his worth as a partner being based on that was pretty big hit to his self-confidence. Not because of any blow to his sense of masculinity, but rather because he puts a lot of value on his intellect and they didn't even consider that facet of him. So the next time he feels that inkling of romance, he ignores it. It goes away in a week or two anyway, so in his mind, why bother if it's not gonna last?

So, by the time he meets someone with whom he forms a friendship based on mutual respect and shared interests, and later becomes genuinely attracted to, and ends up in a relationship with? He has very little direct personal experience with sex. He knows about kinks, but his knowledge comes from hearing about the well known ""wild shit"" like leather and bondage, or whatever sexual practices he learns about in the process of researching other cultures and the occult.

For Egon, learning about his kinks is a twofold process, the first part being when he realizes that something turns him on. He's annoyed for a little bit, because he got entrenched in the idea that he was pretty much who he was going to be for the rest of his life, so learning something new about himself as a person is a little surprising. But he rationalizes the things he likes scientifically, figures they must be pretty universal, and moves on.

I don't have many kinks for him and they aren't super unusual: he likes his hair very lightly tugged, being praised, and being blindfolded (only during foreplay). For the hair thing, he files that away with he fact he likes his hair played with anyway in a non-sexual way, and having light tension applied being a turn-on is just an extension of that. The praise thing is easy to write off, everyone likes being praised! For the blindfolded thing, if you remove one sense, the brain will naturally compensate by dialing up the others, so that's gotta be universal! But he doesn't think any of those count as 'kinks'. So if/when whoever he's with sits him down to explain that he does, in fact, have kinks? Takes a good five to seven business days to process that information, and he's mostly stuck on the label. Not because he has a problem with kink, he could care less what other people are into, but rather he just always thought of himself as pretty vanilla and learning that he's not as plain as he's assumed for most of his life takes a while for him to sort of 'come to terms' with.
