Content : shifters AU, Ghost x Gaz, could be interpreted as platonic tho, very not canon, very OOC, a bit cringe
Enjoy!
Task Force 141 constitutes of four members.
Price, the captain. He's human but learned all the ways to kill both humans and shifters. Very respected and feared.
Lieutenant Ghost, a wolf shifter. His story is unknown but rumors say he wasn't even born a shifter! Brutal on the battle field, he prefers to stay in his wolf form when roaming the base. Doesn't need to talk or bark orders.
Then the two sergeants. Soap, who is a dog shifter from birth and demolition expert, and Gaz, a human and their handler.
Gaz actually came from a family of dog shifters. As the only human, he was doted on throughout his childhood. With a big sense of justice and a penchant for structures, he enlisted. He was quickly made into a canine handler and trainer. He was even called the dog whisperer. The dogs loved him, but still obeyed him perfectly.
Now, why is Gaz, a sergeant and canine handler (not shifter handler), their official handler? Price didn't have the qualifications, and Gaz was honestly a natural at this job. He bent a couple of rules to have him promoted to this position.
But to be honest, he sometimes wondered if Gaz wasn't a pup too, with how he acted with them. He adopts their body language, plays with them and even sleeps in pup piles with them.
All the shifters on base love Gaz. They all wish he could be their handler. But Soap was protective of him, and sometimes Ghost could be seen growling at shifters who got too comfortable with him.
Ghost was currently sitting on a box, as a wolf, watching his sergeants play in the training fields, like they often did. They seem so in sync, running and rolling in the yellow grass. He was honestly admiring their game, and maybe he was a bit jealous.
See, he never had a pack on his own. He never considered having one either, didn't see the benefits. But while he got along great with Soap, they weren't... Like that. It seemed so easy for them. He wanted Gaz to look at him the same way he looks at Soap. He wanted to act the same as Soap did with him. He wanted to sleep in a pup pile with them too.
But he was bigger than dog shifters, and they got intimated. Let alone that he was a mess when faced with Gaz.
His ears perked up as he was suddenly struck by an idea. If he wanted to play, he could just mirror Soap. Do exactly as he does, then Gaz will do the same, right?
And almost like the universe heard him, Soap trotted away to who knows where. Ghost took this opportunity to get down from his crate and approach Gaz. He needed to run a bit so he could intercept wherever Gaz was going.
Kyle seemed honestly surprised to see Ghost, as a wolf, suddenly in front of him. He was huge, probably bigger than himself, if he stood on his hindlegs.
''Hey Ghost, what's up?...'' He asked, looking at him with a nervous smile.
Even after working with him for months, he was still a bit scared of him. Can't blame him, the bloke barely talks to him. Soap had told him how much of a softie he actually was, but anytime he tried to talk to Ghost he'd get all puffy and leave. Kyle just assumed his bond with Soap was something he couldn't have.
Ghost stalked around him with his head low, staring at him. It's almost like he was his prey. A thought Kyle tried no to feed.
''What... What are you doing?...'' he asked, knowing Ghost couldn't exactly answer him verbally.
Suddenly, Ghost jumped forward and Kyle almost fell trying to avoid his attack. He could hear and growl and if he was honest he was about to shit his pants.
Ghost stalked towards him again and Kyle listened to his instinct, breaking into a run for his life. Just as he suspected, Ghost followed after him not even a second later.
He came close to death a couple of times in his life, and never did he beg for mercy. But this was probably the first time his life was threatened by a shifter, and he couldn't help but be sorry for his family who will hear of his death. Especially his mom, who tried so hard to keep him away from working with shifters.
The run lasted longer than Kyle would've guessed, but he was still eventually tackled to the ground with a scream mixed with a cry. The full weight of Ghost on his back knocked the air out of his body. Maybe he even had a concussion from how hard his head bounced on the ground. When he turned around Ghost was mere millimeters from his face.
Gaz was hyperventilating, looking at the wolf with big brown eyes full of... Fear.
That was not what Ghost wanted. How did he fail? He fucking failed at playing! And he hurt Kyle!
Before he could even do anything about it, he was suddenly tackled to the ground by a dog half his size. Soap.
He had heard the scream and couldn't believe what he saw. But whatever came into Ghost to attack Kyle, he didn't care. He bit and asked questions later.
And he was attacking his Lieutenant like it was the battle of his life, and Ghost barely reciprocated. He only defended himself, backing away more and more until he was a good 20 meters away from Kyle.
''Soap! Stop! Please'' Gaz tried to stand on his own, and after barking one last time at Ghost Soap came to his side to help him up.
''It's a misunderstanding, I'm sure... '' he said that, but still kept Soap close to him. Still looked at the wolf with fear in his eyes.
Gaz was accompanied to medics, and Ghost stayed where he was. He sat there for an hour, regretting his choices. When the sun was set, he walked back to base, more specifically to Price's office. He probably heard of what happened and he needed to explain, as humiliating as it was. After going to his room to shift and put some clothes on.
''So... '' Price dragged out a puff of smoke, unimpressed. ''You wanted to... Play? And you failed that? ''
''Yes, as I explained.'' Ghost sighed.
''Well, you're lucky Garrick is so sturdy. He only has a bruise on his forehead and back, with some scratches. He'll maybe need some therapy, thought. He looked quite shaken up, he's used to shifters liking him, you know. ''
''I know...'' Ghost mumbled. He liked him too, just didn't know how to show him.
''You could go explain yourself to him. Use words and shit.'' Price looked at him like he was a dumb student not understanding the question, and maybe he was right.
''Where is he?''
''Fuck if I know, go look. Now out, I'm busy.'' With that, Ghost got up and started to look for Gaz. It was pretty easy, with enhanced senses and all.
He finally spotted him, smoking outside and looking gloom. Ghost approached him with heavy steps to make his presence known, but Gaz still jumped when he saw him so close so suddenly.
''Lieutenant!'' he stood up fast, a choice he quickly regretted because of his head.
''At ease. Look I...'' fuck. There he was again, looking at him with those big doe eyes. Looking so pretty and taking away all his words.
''Yes?...'' Gaz asked, a bit worried by the sudden pause in the sentence.
''Right hum... I'm... Sor... '' he breathed in slowly, then out. ''I'm sorry, for earlier. I didn't mean to hurt you.''
''...''
'...''
Not that he was expecting an immediate pardon, but the face Gaz was making was very inappropriate for the context of their conversation.
''Forgive my language Lieutenant but what the fuck did you mean to do? You bloody chased me like a mad man and jumped on my back!'' he's got a point. That was very weird playing.
Ghost looked away and mumbled an answer.
''I didn't hear, what did you say?'' Gaz tried to get back into Ghost's field of vision. But Ghost just looked elsewhere and mumbled again.
''You're not a child, are you? Speak up!'' he was using the same tone he used when training canine officers or shifters, and it shouldn't work, but it did.
''I wanted to play!... '' there was a stunned silence. ''Like you do with Soap... ''
Gaz looked at his superior for a long minute. Ghost wanted to play... That... weirdly made sense. But also none at all.
''Does that mean... That you don't know how to play?...'' he asked hesitantly, Ghost nodded.
Oh god! Of course he doesn't know! He was made into a shifter, he was never a puppy! And he never had a pack!
''What's this look, sergeant?''
''I'm so sorry...'' Kyle took his hand to comfort him, and while Ghost was ecstatic that they were able to make this contact, he had no idea why he was apologizing.
''What... What are you sorry for? I hurt you'' he said, matter-of-factly.
''You don't know how to play, I'm so sorry for that. And you kept seeing us playing without you, I should've been more attentive to that...'' And he probably wanted to try playing with him before he tried playing with Soap, to impress the dog shifter. It makes sense, poor Ghost.
''What, no I...'' The situation was not turning how it was supposed to, but also Gaz was holding his hand!
''Look, maybe you should try playing with Soap? He could show you how better than I ever could. '' and it'd be a perfect date for them, learning how to play, frolicking in the field...
Ghost simply understood that Kyle did not want to do anything with him. At least not until he's learned how. Fair...
''I will... Thanks. '' Ghost took back his hand and went back to his room, defeated.
Gaz was feeling quite proud of himself.
Their next slow day, Ghost walked towards Soap with determination. He was next to Gaz who shook him with excitement, whispering a ''it's happening!'' .
''Soap.'' He simply said, and with a shake of his head motioned to Soap to follow him. When they were all alone, he turned to face him.
''Show me how to play.'' Soap looked at him a bit doubtful, before he could ask what for Johnny spoke.
"Is that what you tried to do the other day?'' oh for fuck's sake.
''Garrick told you?'' he asked with a roll of his eyes. Johnny looked as guilty as ever.
''No, but Price did. '' Fucker.
''Let's go. '' ''Yes sir!'' Johnny all but trotted behind him until they reached the fields, luckily they were empty.
''So first, shift into a wolf.''
''Yeah, I could've guessed that. '' Ghost took off most of his clothing and folded it neatly, except for his mask. He then shifted and delicately dropped it on his neat pile.
''Since you want to play with Gaz, we'll pretend I'm him. He's a human, he's fragile, so you need to be soft with him.'' oh how Ghost wished he could shift back just to retort, but it would be a lot of energy wasted.
''How would you initiate play?'' how would he- what the fuck kind of question is that?
...
Actually yeah how does one initiate it?
Ghost did like last time, dropping his head and circling Soap, ready to strike.
''No, you see that's a hunting stance. He'll feel threatened. Drop your whole upper body down. Yeah like that, butt in the air. C'mon higher! '' Ghost felt like a proper idiot. Serves him right for asking help from Johnny.
''Tail up too, it shows you're ready to play.'' reluctantly, he did exactly what he told him to.
''Then he'll do that.'' he says as he takes a wide stance. ''Which means he's ready to play too. '' Johnny was grinning like he was already playing.
''The goal of the game is to catch him. But also not... You want to give him a chance, you know. Don't crowd him like he's an actual prey, leave him an escape route.'' that game sounds dumb. Boring. Why would he need to go easy on him?
''And don't bite him when you catch him, just sorta put your teeth on him. Here try it.'' Johnny offered his arm, and after a second of considering, Ghost got close to him and took his arm between his jaw.
''No, that's too hard. Just barely touch him, so he knows he's safe with you.'' Ghost tried again, and was weirdly proud when Soap complimented him.
''Let's try! '' And so, Ghost tried. He initiated, and they started running. Ghost really didn't understand why it was supposed to be fun.
''It's like a dance, of sorts! '' and Johnny made it even more confusing. Chase him, but don't. Catch him, but don't bite. And it's a dance?!
In the end, Ghost had the fun of actually scaring Soap into running faster and threatening him.
It took him two weeks before he even considered trying to play with Kyle again.
They had some mission, but mostly Kyle was still wary of him. Always with Soap close, and Ghost wondered if they were more than friends. He watched them play in the fields like before, except now he was observing. And longing...
The same opportunity showed itself when Soap trotted off, and Ghost timidly approached Gaz. He looked surprised to see him, but smiled softly.
''What is it, Ghost?'' the wolf slowly lowered his upper body. Butt in the air, and... Tail up. Surprisingly, it worked really well. Kyle's smile grew wider as he understood exactly what he wanted.
And like Johnny said he would, he took a wide stance. Ready for him.
Ghost then jumped and they both started running. Ghost was looking at Gaz, and Gaz was looking at him. He tried to catch Gaz but he escaped easily, and Ghost found himself liking it. Gaz was laughing so beautifully, and he didn't want to catch him right away.
He turned and Ghost turned around him.
Like a dance... He gets it now.
He's having fun.
This is fun!
He ended up catching Gaz anyways, and they rolled in the grass. Gaz tried to tackle him and they just ended up falling together.
And like it was second nature to him, Gaz started to scratch his fur. And fuck, he liked that too!
-----
The end! This is totally self indulgent and so far from canon, but I needed this
