Heroic Archetypes
This is just a brief preview of a new mechanic designed for my upcoming Theros-based compendium for 5th Edition, Heroic Archetypes! Used as a replacement for Supernatural Gifts/Backgrounds, or just a little extra something to make your hero really stand out from the crowd. This is only the first 8 of 16 different archetypes that will be available in the final release.
If you’d like to see the others I’ve done so far, as well as the rest of my Theros Compendium, or if you want to vote in polls, get access to a patron-exclusive discord, and more, feel free to support me over on Patreon!

Writing Problem: The Protagonist Is a Standard-Issue Hero
Problem: The Protagonist Is a Standard-Issue Hero
Solution: There are different types of heroes. There are different types of villains. And the multitude of stories in which these various types of characters might interact require differing levels of focus. Not all heroes must have a tale of overcoming adversity. Not all villains need a tragic backstory. Not all comedy stories require a "meek schlub" to come out on top. Not all suspense or thriller tales require a "world-weary detective" fighting for emotional validation or recompense.
Diverse character types help drive diverse stories. Challenge how archetypes and standard-issue definitions traditionally render a "hero" or a "villain" in a story. Important Note: Don't give in by forcing a character to fit an established mold by the story's end.

wait sorry unrelated but I just read a post about wwx postcanon and how it's a happy ending for him because he's in a stable place, with the person he loves, reaching out to jin ling, bonding with the other juniors, asking after wen ning, etc. and the post mentioned that because he has such strong support network he's able to recover from his past life and look to the future, which is all stuff I generally agree with, and it has this reply
Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are traditional heroic gongzi in Chinese fantasy lore. To have them wallow in self-pity or process "trauma" is not within character.
far be it from me to claim to be an authority on traditional Chinese wuxia heroes but I feel like that's an oversimplification? wwx isn't exactly the same as any other traditional folkloric hero, and the author was acutely aware of the suffering he went through. and (I thought) she deliberately wrote him as recovering from what happened to him through his postres storyline through his connection to and support from lwj. like...man maybe I just saw what I wanted to see. idk! it's not how most western stories would handle trauma but it's not like he or the author COMPLETELY ignored it. wwx drinks wine and comiserates in 43 to lwj, I'd consider that processing what happened to him. and wwx visiting BM and reflecting on what happened there...oh fuck that's drama only. OH in the novel the three jiang kids come back together after they retake LP and cry together, that's definitely part of their processing!
and also!!! WHY is trauma in quotes like it's made-up 😭 also wwx literally has a phobia of dogs from being chased on the street as a child and I think trauma exists in the story as a real and recognized force so even if they don't deal with it it's very silly to put it in quotes. I think idk I'd be interested in what other ppl think too

Shang tsung doesn't need to be a "good guy" to be sympathetic or do nice or "good" deeds.
Y'all should understand that not everyone needs to be a hero to be redeemed.
That's some bullshit propaganda that y'all tend to fall for.
It's like that feeling of "if you pray to jesus, all you're sins in OUR eyes will be forgiven" type indoctrinated shit. Like no shade thrown, even as someone who is spiritual myself. I find people thinking that a villain in a story should become a hero in order to be redeemed, kinda suspicious.
Shang tsung,to me,has ALWAYS BEEN NUANCED. And already had benevolent qualities and traits. Y'all just only see one damn part of it because the writers suck at showing them properly.
Not to mention if a character isn't obnoxiously nice or mean,y'all don't pay attention to them.
It's like most of mk fans I've noticed,at least as of late. Feels like I'm talking to 3yr olds in media literacy.
So no. Shang tsung needs to be a NEUTRAL CHARACTER. not good, not evil, just self serving and even quite helpful as a tournament master as he is supposed to fucking be.
He is supposed to be that "keep your friends close, keep you enemies closer" type. He is the "the enemy of my enemies are my friends" type. He's scary intelligent, cunning,a master martial artist,a brilliant alchemist, and one badass mofo you do not wanna cross.
But most of all,he is courteous,a gracious host on his island, and his punishments are as great as his rewards. He does keep his end of the bargain, but he also gets compensation.
If anything you need to worry about earthrealms warriors more than him. Half of them now(due to piss poor writing) are hiding behind heroic deeds and false statements of peace yet they have unclean hands too.
With Shang tsung you know what you are dealing with,it's on the table. If you cant read the obvious, you are indeed a foolish one.
No matter what iteration of shang tsung you have. One thing is clear, made clear, and that is when you deal with him. You deal with the devil so to speak.
So if you're not smart nor prepared. That's on your ass honey. Not his. Do not blame him for your stupidity.
But if you know how to play the game, play chess with the serpent. And know these archetypes. Then you may have a better shot. But that's all on you.
Either way,in your favor or not. Do not blame him for telling you exactly what is needed to be said, not what you wanna hear. Honeyed words or not, there's always a sliver of truth and bitter pill of truth in his words. And he's good at making either people hate his guts or bow and worship him.
THAT IS WHY HE'S DANGEROUS. not because of magic,or experiments and other trival bullshit.
Nah.
It's because shang tsung is good at talking. Good at trades and making you believe whatever is what he wants you to see.
Even if it may go against him. He wants you to fuck up,get angry at him, attack,be unbalanced,so he can fuck your shit right up!
Holy shit this mans whole ass moveset is zoning and keeping you in a certain place in the stage even!
It's part of his whole damb character.
I could go on and on. But do not blame to serpent for telling you information for questions you ask him. You're the one who chose to bite his apple of enlightenment and knowledge so to speak.
Which is why the gods, titans, etc want these kombatants, warriors to be stupid. So they are easy to control,to get what they want.
Like it's glaringly obvious that mortal kombats story has these type of tropes and symbolism in it. But people are too blind, for various reasons. To see it.
I could get deep. It's a videogame,i know. It is what it is.
But the more i look at mk12/mk1 shang tsung. The more i feel its a missed opportunity to showcase these themes better for him.
Like holy shit dude. Shang tsung pointing out the hypocrisy of the gods. And whispers in our earthrealm warriors ears. And maybe convincing a few to join his side. Or even better. Our heroes, kung lao and mortal raiden to question liu kang and not blindly follow like fucking idiots. Sure just trust this dude right? Bruh.
Shang tsung is the only one with a brain once again. And i hate them making everyone else so stupid to make him seem better in the shithole plot of theirs. If you can call it a plot.
It burns me,that it's a waste of potential.
But i digress.
Anyways. Shang tsung, way more than an evil conjurer of tricks my dudes. Waaaaaay fucking more.

i cannot believe im saying this but ive been thinking about my cousland and sten all morning and theyre making me insane
#oc: elspeth#tay plays dao#ive been debating whether or not elspeth recruits him for WEEKS now#but contextually her being a cousland AND an archetypal 'hero' chara doesnt rly slide w the whole killing children thing lol#but ive finally settled on her recruiting him regardless and it makes sense in my head both in yhe moment AND narratively which is 🤪#her whole arc is sort of abt her internal struggle irt being a warden (altruistic/heroic) which shes always wanted to be until she was one#vs being a noble (powerful/respected) which she never appreciated until she lost it#and feeling like both of them conflict with the other and thus feeling like shes not living up to either#she chooses to 'conscript' sten under the pretense of the warden redemption but a lot of it is her selfish noble streak#wanting to punish him for rendon howe's sins .....#idk if this makes sense to anybody but me but obvs it also opens up more moral dilemmas#like..... she gives sten mercy and she WANTS to give loghain mercy and resents alistair for denying her the option#but she would never allow the same mercy to be extended to howe. with good reason obviously but yeah ultimately shes a noble and#quite unknowingly selfish underneath all the posturing and righteousness. she gets over it especially a bit after reaffirming her loyalty#to the wardens..... but yeah. her idea of heroes comes from very sanitized bard songs and chantry tales#she def realizes she cant have her cake and eat it too and i think sten surprisingly is the best character i have to explore that with????#WHO'D HAVE THOUGHT ? NOT ME ❤#anyways if u read all this ur a legend and u may be entitled to financial compensation

Self indulgent Analysis of my TFA OCs whoo whoo
Because I am fond of making my OCs just as vibrant as their autobot comrades and SOMEHOW they parallel a different antagonist also threw in the Sumdacs
Isaac and Powell mirror each other obviously. Both are successful businessmen who made mistakes. But where Isaac owns up to them and does better, Powell tends to run away from or bribe his way out of problems. There's also the fact Powell is lazy while Isaac values hard work.
Sari mirrors Professor Princess. Both are youngest of their faction and versed in science, but where Sari is pretty mature for her age, compassionate and selfless; Princess is completely bratty and selfish.
Imani mirrors Henry. Both work for the same company under Isaac and Powell respectively. They both use powered armor their own creation, but where Henry uses his to commit crimes, Imani protects the people. Henry shares Powell's values (being selfish and cruel) while Imani follows Isaac's (helping the world & being kind)
There's also the design of their armors themselves: Henry built mecha symbolizing the size of his ego. He literally looks down on those he deems as beneath him. Meanwhile Imani's armor fits her body and designed to be practical and comfortable, showing that she's confident the way she is, and being on equal grounds with other humans There's also the underdog aspect: a small thing like her fights big threats on a regular basis. Headmaster's armor are dark purple and red while Imani's are lighter shades
Alisha mirrors Angry Archer. Alisha uses her emotions in a constructive way but Archer's methods are destruction They're also dressed in opposite time periods, Archer's being medieval and Alisha wearing futuristic attire. They're associated with the color green but Angry Archer is motivated by envy and greed, while Alisha represents life and good fortune.
Nicole mirrors Meltdown. Both had been humans who underwent modifications that altered their bodies. But where Nicole uses her enhancements to help others, Meltdown uses his powers to cause harm. There's also Meltdown's torture of the Dinobots, a stark contrast to Nicole's immediate acceptance of them.
Nicole also mirrors Master Disaster. Both are intrigued by Cybertronians but Nicole regards them with respect while Master Disaster only sees them as cash cows.
Malina also mirrors Waspinator. Both went through circumstances not in their control. But where Waspinator embraced revenge and could've continued the cycle of revenge, Malina chose to end it by forgiving her trangressors
BONUS CAPTAIN FANZONE (the one yt guy) Fanzone parallels Sentinel both are in positions of power and intended to protect their city/planet. They're also pretty darn racist Fanzone hating machined and Sentinel hating organics. But Fanzone is willing to set his prejudices aside to do the right thing, and has a low tolerance for haughty arrogance. On the other hand Sentinel is exactly the haughty arrogant person Fanzone dislikes, and he isn't willing to set his preconceived notions aside to do what's right. If anything he's completely selfish. Also Fanzone genuinely does his job fair while Sentinel relies on bribes manipulation and fear.

Good & Evil - Heroic Antagonists
Tumblr media
Welcome to Good & Evil: A Study of Heroes & Villains. I’m discussing different forms of heroic and villainous characters, different types of protagonists and antagonists, and providing examples of them each from various sources. Yesterday, I discussed the concept of the Villain Protagonist. This time, I will be discussing the polar opposite of that: the Heroic Antagonist. If the Villain is the Hero of Their Own Story, as the saying goes, then it stands to reason the opposite is generally also true: the Hero is the Villain of Someone Else’s Story. Heroic Antagonists are, once again, exactly what they sound like: they are the antagonist of the tale, but they are also the good guy of the piece. Just as long as there have been Villain Protagonists, so, too, have there been Heroic Antagonists, but if you think having a Villain Protagonist automatically equates to there being a Heroic Antagonist, you’d be quite wrong. I used “Medea” as an example of an early Villain Protagonist story in my previous entry: Medea, herself, is undeniably the villain of her own story, but the main antagonist - her cheating husband, Jason, who abandons her and scorns her despite all she’s done for him and despite being father to her children - is hardly the most “heroic” character out there, at least by most modern standards.
Tumblr media
This is not to say that’s never the case. Take, for instance, the video game “Assassin’s Creed: Rogue.” The story focuses on one Shay Cormac, who is a member of the heroic Assassins - a secret society - at the start of the story. However, by the end of the game, Shay has turned his coat, and become a member of the villainous Templars, the Assassins’ arch-rivals. By making the main protagonist follow the path of a villain, albeit a sympathetic one, this inevitably causes Shay’s former allies to become his antagonists: chiefest among them is his best friend, Liam O’Brien. At the start of the game, Liam and Shay are practically brothers, but by the end of the story, Shay is forced to kill his own friend, in order to prove his loyalty to his new cause. Liam, meanwhile, remains steadfastly true to the beliefs of the Assassins, and despite the betrayal he feels at Liam’s hands…when Liam says he did it to try and help the world, Llam’s final words are, “I hope that world is a good one.”
Tumblr media
For me, the quintessential Heroic Antagonist - the one I think of immediately when I ponder the phrase or archetype - is Tom Hanks’ character in the film “Catch Me If You Can,” called Carl Hanratty. Carl is a good guy doing a good thing: he’s a federal agent who is out to capture an elusive criminal. Carl understands that the world isn’t black and white: he sympathizes with the person he’s chasing, at times, and in the end, the two of them actually become friends. The criminal he’s after - Leonardo DiCaprio as Frank Abagnale, Jr. - is, in turn, not really a villain so much as an anti-hero. For Carl, catching Frank is just a job he has to do, and it’s not always one he does happily. And while the two of them cause trouble for each other, in the end, not only does Carl help Frank turn over a new leaf, but the pair go from rivals and nemeses to partners.
Tumblr media
It wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t give Twisted Wonderland some attention, in my mind. Ironically, though, the character I’ve chosen to discuss is NOT one of the many, MANY lads based on the classic Disney Villains of yore. Instead, I decided to credit Neige LeBlanche: the character based on Snow White. While the main antagonist of Chapter 5 in the game is the Evil Queen character, Vil Schoenheit, Neige actually counts as an antagonist, too: the whole chapter revolves around a song and dance contest, which Vil and the protagonists of the story are desperate to win. Neige is their competition, and he’s in it to win. However, Neige is not depicted as a spoiled brat, nor as an uppity know-it-all, nor any other kinds of really negative personality types. Neige is, in fact, a very earnest, sweet, and honestly not exceptionally bright young man who holds no ill will towards anybody. He just likes having a good time with his friends, and genuinely likes Vil. There’s not a mean or evil bone in Neige’s body: he is ultimately only an antagonistic presence because the protagonists need to try and defeat him in the contest.
Tumblr media
Cobra Bubbles from the Disney movie “Lilo and Stitch” may not be the MAIN antagonist of his respective movie, but he is, nevertheless, an interesting example. Cobra is a former Men-in-Black-style government agent who has, somehow, become a social worker. Throughout the film, his whole deal is trying to make sure Lilo is well taken care of by her sister, Nani; the threat Cobra poses is separating the sisters and sending Lilo away if he feels Nani can’t do the job properly. There is no ill will in Cobra’s actions or desires: he legitimately wants to do what’s good for Lilo, and he understands Nani’s position. It’s not a job he LIKES doing, he’s not out to try and hurt anybody, and as the film goes on, we see more and more that he truly is a good person just doing what he thinks is best. He’s not misguided or in any way rotten: he’s only the antagonist because he threatens the precious state of “Ohana” the family has managed to maintain.
Tumblr media
A very recent example is The Chief from the Netflix version of “Carmen Sandiego.” In earlier versions of the franchise, the Chief was a supporting Hero figure, with Carmen as a (usually) Sympathetic Villain. This is not the case in the Netflix show, where Carmen is reimagined as the Misunderstood Hero, trying to stop the Villains of VILE. The Chief and her team, the ACME Detective Agency, remain the de-facto heroes of the story, however, but they are also the secondary antagonists after VILE and its agents. However, the Chief herself is not in any way an evil character: she doesn’t want to harm Carmen, or necessarily even bring her to justice. She wants the same thing Carmen wants, to stop VILE in their tracks. The Chief becomes the antagonist simply because she misinterprets Carmen’s actions.
Heroic Antagonists may not get as many kudos as Villain Protagonists, but they are, in my opinion, no less interesting. In stories where a Villain Protagonist is present and facing a Heroic Antagonist, the Heroic Antagonist’s role is usually fairly straightforward: it’s the usual “Hero vs. Villain” game, just now we’re seeing it from the opposite side of the spectrum. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but just as Villain Protagonists will not always face Heroic Antagonists, these types of characters will not always face Villains either. What’s intriguing about Heroic Antagonists is that they effectively go against the grain of what most Heroic archetypes stand for: while most Heroes provide hope of some kind, acting as beacons in a dark world, Heroic Antagonists are usually there to create tension and suspense. We know they’re out to do what’s best, but because they stand in opposition of whatever our main character may be, they become characters we almost dread showing up. Usually, however, their good qualities do shine through, and remind us once again that there are two sides to every story…and when a story reaches a happy conclusion, you can be sure these Antagonists will be the ones who help to make it happen.

Thinking about Gepard rn and tbh I have probably created a whole new personality for him inside my head at this point.
Anyways, I was thinking about how Gepard making shields out of ice can be read as something incredibly symbolic.
The eternal freeze is the very thing that almost completely destroyed Jarilo VI. The eternal freeze covered the planet in ice and snow and hindered the advancements of the people there, only a single city to sustain human life despite all odds.
And Gepard uses a wall of ice to protect his allies. It is literally using the very thing that destroyed their home - ice and snow - as a means of protecting himself and the other characters. Basically using the very thing that condemned Jarilo VI to almost total destruction as a way to protect the people.
Taking this even further and into more head cannon territory, this is somehow a way to see Gepard's relationship to the preservation as a concept. I like to think that he views protection and preservation as the only path he could ever take. it's just they way things are and have ever been: the Landaus protect Belobog. So it's like the very thing that that he has dedicated his whole life for is also an inescapable duty for him - weighting him down almost like a punishment.

My personal headcanon is that holst goes along with everything in golden trashfire because he realizes clout is stupid and easy to manipulate and he wants to get back at Rhea because he's still really mad she rescued his slave.
Poor Holst -
Just one scuffle with Leopold "I am stupid, son" von Bergliez and all his common sense disappeared.
For y'all who liked Holst, I'm really sorry for you.
What was sold as a hero, someone strong enough to fight on par (for 10 seconds) against Nemesis, the living proof that the crust system doesn't exist and man who had a strong set of morals (and might have not been the one who kept Almyrian children as slaves, but maybe Great Uncle Theobald) was reduced to...
Clout's yesman, "listening to the Church's doctrine is like losing reason" when the Church's doctrine is just "don't kill don't be mean" and "yay Nader besties i luf you don't worry idgaf about protecting the border or how you want to pillage for funsies and killed dozens of my men in your weekly raids before the sunday BBQ".
GW already completely eluded the Almyrian slavery issue - which is rich, coming from the route where someone wants to have "mutual acceptance" between the two nations and their people - but with Golden Shower, we have the impression no one really gives a fuck about this issue (and almyrian commoners?) and it's just there, relegated to the same fridge than Supreme Leader's dislike for pointy ears, or Larva and Uncle's belief that a good Nabatean is a Relic.
While I'm sad we didn't get more about Willy - even if I received unexpected breadcrumbs ! - given what Nopes did to NPC or background characters, I'm pretty happy he wasn't slaughtered in the Edelfest cashgrab game.

You're more amazing than tortles (the D&D species)
I have some very tragic news about tortles
Oh also here's the draft archetypes I sketched out for Modified Set 2.0
WU auras WB heroic UB modified control UR artifacts BR equipment BG keyword counters RG modified aggro RW elementals (artifact/enchantment creatures) GW enchantments GU +1/+1 counters
WHITE - Tools: Enchantment creatures, auras, buff spells. Payoffs: Enchantments, heroic, elemental typal. BLUE - Tools: Artifacts, auras, +1/+1 counters. Payoffs: Artifacts, auras, modified. BLACK - Tools: Equipment, AC spells. Payoffs: Equipment, modified, heroic. RED - Tools: Artifact creatures, equipment. Payoffs: Artifacts, modified, elemental typal. GREEN - Tools: +1/+1 counters, keyword counters, enchantments. Payoffs: Counters, modified, enchantments.
#asks#i was kinda struggling to get a 10th archetype after adding artifact and enchantment themes and heroic#then i realized that artifact and enchantment creatures would probably be A Thing#so why not make them a unified creature type?#i was calling them “craftfolk” for a bit before digging through the creature types and settling on elementals#which still isn't final because i'm not sure what the flavor of the set is going to be now#i was already using modified twice AND i was using “enchantments” and “auras” and “artifacts” and “equipment” as separate themes#so i really didn't have room for more redundancy#so throwing in a nice creature type typal theme worked#and most the elemental support will also work with enchantments or artifacts depending on if the card is white or red#like “if you control an enchantment or an elemental this spell costs 1 less to cast” on a white card#so that way the elemental typal support cards also work as enchantment/artifact support cards!#it is still kinda redundant but it's unique enough for me#originally i was thinking of doing a “balance” theme of artifacts+enchantments like Kamigawa Neon Dynasty did#but white ONLY had enchantments and red ONLY had artifacts#originally i was looking to fill the WB archetype but since targeting spells are a great way to do keyword counters i moved heroic to WB#so that way black has keyword counters to work with the BG archetype#WB still had the same problem anyway of black not having enchantments#ANYWAY i figured it all out so everything is cool now#kinda funny to have black be “heroic” though#working out the flavor on that is gonna be weird
