Best Underrated Anime Group F Round 3: #F3 vs #F1
#F3: Daily lives of tiny forest women
#F1: High school girls go to Antarctica
Details and poll under the cut!
Tumblr media
#F3: Hakumei and Mikochi (Hakumei to Mikochi)
youtube
Summary:
In a world inhabited by people only a few inches tall, young women Hakumei and Mikochi live together in a house built into a tree. Hakumei is an energetic and tomboyish carpenter, while Mikochi is a feminine and calm tailor. Despite their differences, they get along well and spend their days having fun living their lives in the woods. The two of them spend their time working, going on sightseeing adventures, and taking shopping trips into Tsumiki Marketplace by the ocean. They make many friends along the way, be they sentient woodland creatures like Iwashi the Weasel or fellow miniature people such as the songstress Konju and the inventor Sen. Hakumei to Mikochi is a relaxing look into the day-to-day lives of its titular characters as they explore and interact with their tiny world which seems to be straight out of a fairy tale.
Propaganda:
It really is super adorable, and the art is gorgeous. Every bit of the world is rendered lovingly with a great level of detail, from the characters to the environments. The anime has this really cool effect where they use paneling to emulate the manga’s style while also making the characters visually smaller on-screen, which works because they’re tiny.
For a slice-of-life show, there’s a good amount of continuity. They introduce the swamp necromancer Sen in one episode, and she keeps showing up later on, helping rebuild their house when it explodes, then Mikochi repays her for that by designing and making a dress for her. The show gets really into the intricacies of everything, like how dying fabric is a multistep process that is similar to chemistry, or how soap is made with aromatics.
Every character is well-realized, with their own set of quirks, profession, the tricks and tools they use in that profession, and they make pretty consistent re-appearances. And the writing is very dry and witty despite the whimsical setting. It’s cute, but it feels very adult, all the characters are adults with jobs who get drunk sometimes. Everyone is very professional and responsible, and it’s a nice change of pace from teen shounen.
Trigger Warnings: None.

#F1: A Place Further than the Universe (Sora yori mo Tooi Basho)
youtube
Summary:
Filled with an overwhelming sense of wonder for the world around her, Mari Tamaki has always dreamt of what lies beyond the reaches of the universe. However, despite harboring such large aspirations on the inside, her fear of the unknown and anxiety over her own possible limitations have always held her back from chasing them. But now, in her second year of high school, Mari is more determined than ever to not let any more of her youth go to waste. Still, her fear continues to prevent her from taking that ambitious step forward—that is, until she has a chance encounter with a girl who has grand dreams of her own.
Spurred by her mother's disappearance, Shirase Kobuchizawa has been working hard to fund her trip to Antarctica. Despite facing doubt and ridicule from virtually everyone, Shirase is determined to embark on this expedition to search for her mother in a place further than the universe itself. Inspired by Shirase's resolve, Mari jumps at the chance to join her. Soon, their efforts attract the attention of the bubbly Hinata Miyake, who is eager to stand out, and Yuzuki Shiraishi, a polite girl from a high class background. Together, they set sail toward the frozen south.
Sora yori mo Tooi Basho follows the captivating journey of four spirited girls, all in search of something great.
Propaganda 1:
This show literally changed my life I’m not even kidding. It’s messages about living your life to the fullest and finding, creating, and maintaining important friendships in your life literally got me to pick myself up and actually start living my life. All of its main characters are all incredibly memorable, and they all bounce off of each other very well. It’s fun and cute as hell, but also a really powerful story about dealing with grief and moving on. The final three episodes of the show are an emotional gut-punch, but they leave you with a sense of bittersweet fulfillment and a drive to get out in the world and have your own adventure.
Propaganda 2:
Let’s start with the fact that this is Madhouse doing a (relatively) grounded coming of age story about high school girls - the show looks gorgeous, of course. The music’s solid as well. (I still regularly listen to the ending.) But what really shines is the writing and characterization.
The pacing on this is perfect. For a show that spends half its runtime getting to Antarctica, you never feel like the time should be allotted differently or that you’re missing out on hijinks. Episode 12 is a particular standout, with tension building up until it explodes, and then goes still for the true emotional climax of the show. The four main girls all feel like believable teens, and seeing their relationship develop over the course of the series and watching them come into their own is well-done. The way it handles Shirase and her emotions, and how this complicates her relationships with them all is a particular standout. This may not be eligible in that it’s one of those anime people who watch A LOT of anime will recommend highly—it was on Crunchyroll and IGN’s best anime of the 2010s lists and on several “best of” lists for 2018. But it never quite took off the way it truly deserves, so I’m submitting it. It’s getting an English dub soon, though, and I really hope that gives it a resurgence of popularity. The girls are alright.
(Admin: Propaganda has been edited slightly to remove spoilers)
Trigger Warnings: Death via freezing

At least that’s what the clients perceive, but Yukishita is actually an Omega with a crush on Renjaku. He couldn’t hide his gender anymore when his first heat came unexpectedly…at age 26!
Review Proper
Tumblr media
IT’S 2003, FOLKS!!!
Can I just stress that “nyak” means something similar to “ew” in the Filipino language? It’s just so funny to me. They omitted the k in the BLCD, but I will never let it go. It’s STAR★NYAKS to me until the day I die, Sakyo Aya. Also, idk if my memory serves me right, but this, surprisingly, is the healthiest Sakyo Aya pair to date? They’re not exactly that dumb for each other, and I loved how Hana was only in it for the underwear the first few chaps, while Renjaku-san wasn’t overly possessive, unlike most of the Kuroneko Kareshi tops. Hana also wasn’t an annoying tsundere! Hallelujah! Nakamura Shungiku character development when? Renjaku-san turning domestic was such a shocker to me too! The very first time I’ve ever wanted a Sakyo Aya top since Ei.
Anyway, enough about the plot. This review’s highlight is, of course, the VAs ‘cause this was undoubtedly ROBBED in last year’s awards.
I will never get tired of saying this, but
MY RINTAROU-KUN IS BACCCCKKKKK!!!
Tumblr media
I wasn’t too keen at first, as his voice was a little too high for Hana, but he quickly grew on me. You really gotta give it to Shinshokan when it comes to casting. 👏👏👏 Hearing Takuma in a Sakyo Aya was just such a blast to the past, man. I couldn’t ask for more. If y’all wanna hear what old school pron sounds like in a modern setting, look no further. I’m sorry, SatoTaku and Sonna ni Iu, but this is Takuma’s best performance of 2021, and it’s with none other than rookie TADOKORO HINATA!
YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND! IT’S BEEN NINE YEARS SINCE WE’VE EVER HAD SOMEONE OF THIS RANGE DEBUT AS A BL SEIYUU!!! The last was Hamano Daiki in 2014, and he’s not even that active outside Yarichin nowadays. 😩 And, I know that I have a bad habit of looking for a rookie’s soundalike senpai, BUT TADOKORO DOESN’T HAVE ANY!!! HE A RARE BREED! A GIFT FROM THE GODS!!! He’s like a deeper TsudaKen with a clear diction like OnoYuu with a side of Suwabe suave~ YA KNOW WHAT I MEAN??? But that’s just diction and range! HE REALLY DOESN’T SOUND LIKE ANYONE I’VE EVER HEARD BEFORE!!! AAAAAAAAAAAA
JUST LISTEN TO THE TRAILER:
youtube
I’m just so proud. I’ve been supporting him since his first official supporting role in Memento Scarlet and have always expressed my wish to see him in a lead role in every review since and here we are now.
Tumblr media
And how was his performance in his debut role, you might ask? Fucking perfect ✨ It can’t get any better than that. He really saw that wig and snatched it! Listen, Takuma’s a Gen 2 veteran who has his own rhythm that can swallow you whole if you’re not too careful. Nakajiki fell victim to that back in Hidoku Shinaide, and he was a top there, so it was going to be harder on Tadokoro here ‘cause bottoming was Takuma’s forte! He not only stood his ground, but he owned that Takuma ass so well. 😭 Granted, Tadokoro has some experience in the anime industry, but he’s honestly done better than the recent Takeuchi Ryouta, Matsuda Kenichirou, and Hamada Kenji comebacks when they’re supposed to be more experienced. UGH. SO MUCH POTENTIAL WITH THIS ONE. I DON’T GET WHY HE DIDN’T GET AN AWARD!!! HE WAS ROBBED ISTG!!! He doesn’t have anything lined up for 2022 yet, but I’m gonna eye his profile like a hawk and have a fund ready just for him. He’d do great in a Haji! If they only adapted their works
We have stellar plot execution, AMAZING VOICE WORK AND CHEMISTRY, and overall faithful following of the manga. I read PCB’s scans before this was licensed by SuBLime, and I’m not sure if they used the magazine or tanko raws, but there was a bit of a jumble with the sequencing of the events in the BLCD. I’m leaning towards the former, though, so I highly suggest getting a copy of the SuBLime version if you plan to have a read-along. If you’re a fan of this series, I implore you to listen to this. It’s one of the best adaptations of 2021. Don’t listen to chil-chil. AND TO EVERY TADOKORO, VETERAN, AND WHALE TRASH OUT THERE, GET THIS. GET THIS!!!

Women/Girls in Anime Who Inspire Me
In one way or another. Definitely not all of them are here; just a few highlights.
Hitagi Senjougahara, Bakemonogatari
Tumblr media
What I love about Senjougahara is how much she’s grown throughout her series. She’s never saved from her trauma, (which is symbolically manifested in supernatural form) but instead she accepts help and works toward saving herself. She means a lot to me personally, and has given me courage to ask for help.
Utena Tenjou, Revolutionary Girl Utena
Tumblr media
Seeing a strong queer woman fight men with a sword is always pretty inspirational, but Utena’s character runs deeper than that in a way I can’t quite describe. Without going into complicated stuff, let’s just say that Utena really made me see just how important representation is.
Kaori Miyazono, Your Lie in April
Tumblr media
Kaori really got me back into music, specifically playing the piano. I realized I’d fallen into many of the pitfalls Kousei had while playing, and Kaori’s words and songs helped me find my love for playing again.
Shouko Komi, Komi Can’t Communicate
Tumblr media
While Komi’s experiences don’t really reflect mine when it comes to social anxiety, it’s surely refreshing to see a narrative surrounding anxiety that’s not all doom and gloom. Seeing her make more friends just gets me through the day, and makes me think: “Hey, maybe I could do that too.”
Mari Tamaki, Shirase Kobuchizawa, Hinata Miyake, Yuzuki Shiraishi, A Place Further than the Universe
Tumblr media
This whole series inspired me on so many levels. The bond between these four girls and the journey they went on made me also want to go on some sort of incredible journey. It made me think that maybe incredible things can be done. (Of all of these, I seriously recommend this one! I never fails to make me laugh, smile, and cry!)
Thank you for getting this far! Have a great day!

A Place Further Than the Universe (Ep. 1-4)
Tumblr media
A Place Further Than the Universe is a cute anime that represents growth and challenging yourself to reach a better point in life. Each of the four main characters all have their own struggles that they are trying to overcome, and when all together, motivate and complete each other.
Mari Tamaki represents the monotonous struggle of high school, and the longing for adventure. To me, this also represents adulthood, as it is a constant amount of hard work to contribute to society, and there is always a feeling of missing out on the greatest experience life has to offer.
Shirase Kobuchizawa represents the concept of having a goal, setting your mind to achieving it, and stopping at nothing until it happens. Even against all odds and being shamed from her peers, she doesn't care about any obstacles that are in her way. She is a very motiving character.
Hinata Miyake represents a similar thing to Mari. She represents a focus on enjoying life and living day by day. She doesn't go to high school because she finds it boring and a waste of time, but she still excels and studies for the university entrance exam that she will take in a couple of years.
Yuzuki Shiraishi represents the loneliness of child stars and the craving for human connection. Before meeting the other three girls, she never had friends before, even after trying many times. I believe this shows the importance of having deep connections with people in our lives. As humans, we are very social creatures, and not socializing can drive us to insanity.
I think Mari and Yuzuki especially represent issues in Japan. Mari with Japanese people being socially pushed into working incredible hard as a teenager. Yuzuki with Japanese people dealing with social isolation. I believe both of these issues correlate to the high suicide rate in Japan.
As for me, I relate closely with Shirase and Hinata. Shirase reminds me of how I have set huge goals for myself and I can't see myself spending my time in any other way than productively pushing towards reaching those goals. Hinata reminds me of how I crave to do things that allow me to enjoy my life, while still doing the important things that help me reach my goals.

~~~ A Place Further than the Universe (ep. 6,9,10,12) ~~~
In these later episodes, a lot of emphasis is placed on the human bond over the material world. While the Clouds and Singapore remain the same despite their absence, each other’s emotional state was greatly reliant on their own relationships with one another. Going even further, the places that they had the most impact on their absence were their homes and their families, and their friends (Ex. Mari Tamaki high school friend leaving for Antarctica). All of these ideas come to convey the theme that the most meaningful and impactful thing one can do is through one's effect on other people.
I relate to the idea that one’s greatest effects are on other people. The time I spent with friends and loved ones and the experiences that we go through together has an insurmountable effect on me. The things we go through, good and bad, are the biggest factor in determining who we are to each other and who we are to ourselves, way more than a million yen or a trip to Antarctica. Just like when Shirase Kobuchizawa left her savings near where her mom died, and when Mari Tamaki said that she would not be enjoying her trip if it was not for her friends, the effect of relationships on both characters were enough to overwhelm their material interests. Also, in this story, the development of Hinata Miyake, Yuzuki Shiraishi, Mari Tamaki, and Shirase Kobuchizawa occurred through the maturation of their friendship. As they interacted and became exposed to each other's characteristics. Their ability to acknowledge and support each other's characteristics is what ultimately led to the growth of their characters. Hinata Miyake's loss of her passport and subsequent martyr behavior was addressed by Shirase Kobuchizawa and the others, strengthening their bond and Hinata’s understanding of herself. Similarly, Yuzuki Shiraishi's formalization of friendship was also addressed by the others, furthering Yuzuki's character and reinforcing their collective bond.
