The Unsolved Murder of Debbie Lou Fijan

Debbie Lou Fijan lived in West Chicago with her parents, Jack and Marilyn Fijan. Debbie was born in 1956 and, when she was murdered, was only ten years old. At the time of her killing, Debbie attended fifth grade at Benjamin Elementary School. On February 11th of 1966, Debbie decided to stay after school for a basketball game, and was waiting for her mother to pick her up when she went missing.

The investigation into Debbie’s disappearance began immediately, with DuPage Deputy Sheriff David Henry leading the case. Only hours after she was reported missing, Debbie’s body was found off of Lies Road, in a shallow, ice crusted ditch northeast of West Chicago. She had been stabbed 19 times by her killer.

Several of Debbie’s possessions were found along with her body, including her school books and a small white statue of a duck. This lead investigators to believe that Debbie never made it out the door, and was murdered at her school by one of the staff members.

Initially, Loren Schofield—a teacher at Benjamin Elementary and the last person to see Debbie before she was killed—was charged with her murder. However, when he was taken to trial, Judge WIlliam Bauer realized that the evidence the prosecution presented didn’t match up to Schofield. He dismissed the case and on February 16th, 1966, released Schofield on bond.

Sadly, no further arrests were made in the case of Debbie Lou Fijan. Her case remains unsolved to this day. Debbie is buried in the Irving Park Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois, next to her maternal grandparents. Rest in peace, Debbie.
