Love is a concept that Bruce couldn’t help but to hold tight to. He loved his mother, he loved Betty, he loved his friends, and he grew to love Hulk. But with only the word “love” etched onto the inside of his wedding band, it took on a new meaning.

Love was the way Thor kept their bed warm when Bruce going to get home late. Love was the way he made one cup of tea and one cup of coffee on the mornings that Bruce couldn’t get out of bed. Love was the way Thor smiled, the way he held Bruce’s hand, the way he spoke to Hulk when they would see each other. Love was the way Thor slept at night, one hand under Bruce’s head and one draped over him.

Love was everything Thor did, everything he said. It felt all-consuming, like Bruce was a teenager again, feeling everything so strongly that it felt like it would last forever, like they were in their honeymoon phase, like they could never tire of each other.

The words “I love you” weren’t seldom used in their house. In fact, it was the first thing they said to each other every morning and the last thing they said at night. It was what ended every phone call, every video chat when they were away from each other.

Love meant safety, love meant home. Love meant Thor.

When Thor woke, finding Bruce burrowed against his chest, he let fear overtake him for a brief moment. In the mornings, Bruce was always pressed against Thor’s back, arms around his middle and face in his hair. He called it “being the big spoon,” though Thor still wasn’t quite sure what that meant. But he did know that it felt safe, and when he woke with Bruce in his arms instead, his mind always assumed that during the night, Bruce had had a nightmare or an anxiety attack of some kind. This morning was no different.

He gently roused his boyfriend, earning a sleepy smile and a hum. “What’s up?” Bruce yawned, moving one hand away from Thor’s chest to rub at his eyes.

“Are you alright?” Thor asked. “I mean, when we wake up like this, usually something has happened in the night, and-” His explanation was cut off by Bruce leaning in to press a kiss to his collarbone.

“No, I’m fine,” he assured, “sometimes I just want your arms around me.” He grinned a little and took a slow breath. “I love you.” Thor watched as Bruce’s eyes fell shut, a low chuckle rumbling from his chest.

“I love you, dear,” he answered, placing a gentle kiss on Bruce’s forehead as the other man was drawn back into sleep.

“Hulk!” Thor called out, running across the battlefield with little regard to his own safety. He hadn’t seen his boyfriend, had been wondering whether or not he was even alive, for almost a month. Forgive him if he was a tad overeager.

“Blondie!” Hulk answered, turning to receive the Avenger running toward him with open arms. They had no time for questions, no time for ‘where were you’s or ‘how did you get here?’s. They barely had the time to reunite, honestly. The battle was still raging around them, but Thor was keeping a good amount of enemies at bay with lightning blasts, giving them just a minute or so. Thor hugged Hulk around the abdomen, laughing lightly when Hulk picked him up and pressed a gentle kiss to his forehead.

“I love you,” he said as Hulk set him down. “I’ll see you after.” Hulk grunted and nodded, taking off in the opposite direction to rejoin the fight.
