Who becomes a special education teacher?

There is no singular answer to this question. When I volunteered at a school for autistic and otherwise disabled students, each teacher and aide was different. When I volunteered at an ARC adult daycare center, the staff were equally varied in their treatment of the individuals there. But there were some common threads I noticed across both locations, regardless of how different they were on the surface. And there were common threads that tied the teachers & staff together, too.

For the purposes of this post, I will be discussing my observations about the school, not the ARC adult daycare center. Also, before you continue reading, you should know that this essay will discuss suicidal ideation and sexual actions. Now, let’s continue:

Something very interesting I noticed was that the only white man I ever interacted with was the principal of the school. I’m sure there were a few white male teachers, but I never met any. The people who were with me in the aftercare classroom were all women and/or POC. This demographic data didn’t match my own school, which was only 10 minutes away. My own school had extremely few teachers of color, and had a decent amount of white male teachers. But looking back, I recall that the many of the one-on-one aides for the special education students at my school were people of color.

I’m pointing these things out because usually, jobs that women and/or POC do are systemically undervalued in society. Teaching is still seen as “women’s work,” because it’s associated with caretaking. The association with caretaking gets less intense as kids get older, which is why there are a heck of a lot more male secondary school teachers than there are male elementary school teachers. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (in the US), only 11% of elementary school teachers are male, whereas 36% of secondary school teachers are.

When you look at the stats on special education teachers as a whole, 86.3% are female (meaning that 13.7% are male). Despite being significantly outnumbered, the average salary for a male special education teacher is $53,855, which is $8,393 more than the average female salary of $45,462.

Then, looking at the statistics for one-on-one aides, things get even more stark. Almost 89% of paraprofessionals are female, and the average female classroom aide makes only $19,927 per year, compared to male classroom aides who make $26,453 per year. Referring to the previous paragraph, notice the significant gap between what the teachers are paid, versus what the aides are paid. There are also many more POC aides than POC special education teachers. Only 16.8% of special education teachers are POC, whereas 24.3% of aides are POC. (I did those calculations based on US census bureau data)

Okay, so we’ve discussed the demographics, the pay gaps, and the racial disparities. Keep in mind that the vast majority of people in these jobs are also neurotypical, and that all of the teachers and aides where I volunteered were neurotypical as well. Now, I’m going to discuss the pervasive ableism and problematic attitudes that existed at the school, keeping in mind all of the sociological factors that have contributed to these people feeling that they are not valued in society for the work that they do.

The culture of the school I worked at was what one might expect. The teachers mostly cared about the students, and were pleasant to talk to. But there were some things I noticed that weren’t particularly pleasant or enjoyable:

Most of the time, the teachers and aides talked about the students in the 3rd person, as if they weren’t in the room. Even if the students in question could speak clearly, they were still treated as though they could not contribute any meaningful input to a conversation. The problem was even worse for students who couldn’t speak. They were all referred to in the 3rd person, discussed by staff, and speculated about without any regard for the fact that they probably understood everything that was being said about them. I tried my very best not to engage in this behavior when spoken to (teachers would try to involve me in their conversations about the students), but in order to mask and protect my position as a volunteer, I couldn’t speak up about the issue or do anything to stop it.

Many of the teachers obviously didn’t want to be there, and didn’t like their jobs. There was one teacher in particular, I don’t remember her name, who would even “joke” about committing suicide right after a student did something mildly disruptive. She would vocally express (right in front of the students!) how much she hated her job, hated herself, and hated her life. She was at least 50 years old, and often turned to me (I was only 17 at the time) to vent and rant in distress about how awful everything was and how much she wished for retirement. This was incredibly uncomfortable to me, and probably very damaging to the students, but it was also something I couldn’t really do anything about given my unofficial status at the school.

Students were not given any intellectually stimulating activities to do in the after school program. This was a particular problem for one autistic student named Matt, who I could tell was bored out of his mind. To quell his boredom, he peeled the paper label off of crayons, peeled the name stickers off of other students’ desks, ripped up pieces of construction paper, stole food from the snack bin and shoveled it into his mouth when the teachers weren’t paying close attention, and masturbated in the middle of the classroom. That last part is something nobody had prepared me for when I started volunteering there. In fact, it seems to be something nobody in the special education world talks about at all. The only other person I’ve talked to about it until now is Laurel. And yes, it caught me off guard. But I very easily understood why all of this was happening- Matt was seeking intense sensory input to replace his boredom.

Sometimes his aide gave him picture books to read out loud, which he did. But when he was finished and said “Done!” his aide just told him to read it again. The only times I had seen him truly happy and engaged were the times that he was allowed to play the keyboard. Matt was an amazingly talented musical artist. I was shocked when I first heard him play- not because he’s autistic, but because the composition he was creating was worthy of being played in Carnegie Hall. During the days he had access to the keyboard, his sensory seeking and anxious behaviors significantly decreased. He sang along to the tune of the songs he created (they were extremely catchy), and chewed on a red chewy that was clipped to his shirt. He didn’t bite his hands, rip up his gloves, or ask to “go to the bathroom.”

Yet, he usually wasn’t allowed to use the keyboard. The reason I overheard was that the music teacher was afraid he would break it. And yes, he did have a history of throwing things during meltdowns, which I witnessed. So it was possible that he might try to throw the keyboard, too. But what nobody except me seemed to understand was that his meltdowns only happened on the days when he wasn’t given access to the keyboard. He was calmest when playing it.

These were the ways that each student was failed. They were treated as less than human, as non-thinking and non-understanding. Teachers spoke openly, in front of the students, about how much they hated their jobs. The knowledge and skills of students were severely underestimated. Students like Matt were not provided with real books, real intellectual challenges, or the ability to fully express themselves creatively.

And quite honestly, not all of that was purely a function of ableism. It was also a function of the socioeconomic status of the teachers, and the ways they were unappreciated, undervalued, and underserved by society at large. When these teachers and aides aren’t given proper tools and resources to understand and assist autistic people, they will inevitably fail. When classrooms don’t have enough books, when teachers have to buy their own art supplies, and when there’s only one keyboard in the entire school, the students aren’t going to get their needs met. When the school is understaffed, people are working overtime to pay for their mortgage, and teachers have to stop meltdowns during their lunch breaks, they’re bound to have negative attitudes about their jobs and lives in general.

The solution to this problem is two-fold: start funding the important work of educating and caring for disabled people, and start creating seminars and workshops for these teachers to learn about disability from the perspective of disabled self-advocates, so that they will be best equipped to serve their students’ needs.

I hope that dream becomes a reality someday.

It can be a bit jarring after getting off to my own trauma or something related to that trauma but I find that proper aftercare is really, really important in any scene that touches on trauma. I’d almost go as far as saying it’s a form of edge play when you touch on trauma so that aftercare is crucial. 

You should be getting debriefed after a scene like this to check in on how you’re feeling and getting your needs met. Talking about what happened and how you’re safe and cared for is really the only way to make this type of intense play work. Otherwise, you’re just going to end up tripping over all your emotions at unexpected times.

Demand more/better aftercare with stuff like this. This is advice I also need to take when it comes to trauma play. We all need to be our own advocates to get what we need. 💕

I was never the type of person to go out and explore because I was so used to staying at home, however with my interest in pageantry- I was able to win the title in our Barangay Pageant back in 2017. Since then, I was given the opportunities to put myself out there and explore the different sides of where I live from parades to volunteering in medical missions. Fast forward to 2019, my unit 4 project truly set me back to the day I was so intrigued by the location of our Barangay.

I am so honored to have the chance to interview the Barangay Captain of our Barangay Kalumpang named Hon. Segundo S. Cruz, and there we shared an intellectual discussion regarding the situation and preparedness of the community incase any calamity hits us. One of the first questions that I asked was the common problems of the community in terms of calamities and he mentioned about flood and heavy rainfall which are the common types that affect us. Our Barangay is literally just beside the Marikina River, which is why he mentioned that one of their ways into alarming the people was through their sirens. He said that the Barangay has a light post outside which also serves as a measurement to when the alarms must ring. Once the water reaches at Level 15, the First Siren will be played, and the Third Siren will indicate that we must evacuate immediately. He said that the City Mayor has an assigned Camp Manager whom the local barangays follow.

Upon having my community walk, I saw how close they really are from the river but despite that, they have designated places for their patrol cars, firetrucks, motorboats, and even have their own solid and waste management and the entire barangay had CCTV cameras which they are constantly checking. I felt safe and I also loved how the people were welcoming and attentive to my requests for pictures and details. I am not sure if he did not understand my question on the obstacles that the barangay is facing that prevents them from giving their full potential of help, or that things are just going naturally smooth because he was not able to answer it well. However, basing my assumption from my community walk- I can definitely say that Barangay Kalumpang is prepared enough.

Still, looking at other barangays especially from far-flung areas, I am hoping that they too will receive the same efforts as we are coming from a big city. There are still places here in the Philippines where they do not have enough support may it be materials, financial aid, or seminars that could helped them in a long run. As for my Barangay, I am hoping that the local government of Marikina would continue to their endeavor in making their people knowledgeable and ready when it comes to calamities. If there is a need to improve, then improve it.

In the Philippines, I am more concerned to the growing Deforestation. Science has already proven that trees can help ease the flood, but we are still on our way to cutting more trees in exchange for commercial buildings and subdivisions. As a student of Political Science, I believe that the way wherein we can address issues regarding the calamities or environment situation in our country/community is through proper legal forum. The best way is to create a group or an organization within the barangay where they are tasked to research and study every situation in terms of natural calamities that affects their people. This is because we need to take in mind the gravity of every natural disaster and how it can greatly affect an individual’s life. I want to start this post off with a question, why is it that the moment we give birth, we are no longer of any concern to our doctors and family? We just spent 10 damn months creating life and having our bodies completely rearranged from the inside out to protect and deliver this new life and then BAM, we no longer matter. How does society expect us women to go through the most traumatic experience of our lives and then magically be this kind, nurturing human being, meanwhile our entire uterus is purging itself and our poor vaginas are screaming at us. It’s honestly despicable that we get so used to going to our OB’s and having our health be of utmost importance, then once we have our babies we get slapped with the whole “Alright, see ya in 6 weeks unless you start dropping clots the size of your newborn or have a fever so hot you could cook an egg on your forehead”. Never mind the fact that our vaginas are stitched like crazy or that our bodies are going through shock from giving birth and don’t even get me started on the damn hemorrhoids that now hang to your knees.

I remember laying on what was essentially a dog potty mat for over an hour after I had E before my mom, not my nurses or doctors, but MY MOM finally changed it because she realized how long I had been sitting in my own waste. I had the epidural still stuck in my spine for over an hour after birth, even though it hadn’t been on in over three hours, and had to beg a random nurse to take it out because the pain was killing me. By the end of our stay at the hospital I felt as if I wasn’t even human anymore because of the lack of concern I received from the medical staff, regardless of the fact that I just birthed a whole ass human being. If it weren’t for my mother and husband, I would’ve withered away for sure.

Had I known then what I know now about the postpartum care I’d be receiving, I would be a thousand times more demanding in my aftercare and would’ve advocated for myself a lot more than I thought was necessary. For those new moms to be reading, PLEASE speak up anytime you’re feeling under cared for or neglected. The medical staff is there to care for you as well as that precious new baby, they are there to help you heal physically as well as mentally. If you feel like your nurse is not contributing to your birth in a helpful way, request a new one. If you feel like something is wrong, speak up. I was extremely stingy with how long I would let people hold E because I wanted her all to myself. It was hard enough for me to give her to her father to hold, so of course I wasn’t going to be over the moon to let everyone else hold her for hours on end.

If I was going to have a second child, which I am not, I would be a perceived as an absolute bitch to just about everyone because I would advocate so hard for myself the second time around. The whole six week waiting period before you see your doctors again is absolute bullshit. I chipped my tailbone during birth and had no clue till six weeks later, which by that point was past the time frame to fix it before it healed wrong, so now I’m cursed to a life of sitting on cushioned seats only. I had absolutely no clue that the numbing pain in my tailbone was from breaking my ass. I genuinely thought that was just how you felt after having a baby, so you could imagine my shock and frustration that no one told me I had a chipped tail bones in the six weeks before my postpartum check up. The amount of issues that could develop before your six week appointment is terrifying and it’s disgusting that no one is more concerned about this. Everyone remembers the postpartum depression questionnaire they hand you before you’re released from the hospital and the whole “call your doctor if you have thoughts of harming yourself or your baby”, but no one goes through the whole spectrum of postpartum depression and anxiety with you. I plan to go into PPD and PPA in a separate blog post because of the amount of information I want to go over, but I just wanted to bring that into this post because of the importance. Mental health is just as important as physical health when it comes to postpartum care, mainly because you cannot take care of a newborn if you’re not mentally okay. The amount of attention needed to keep that baby alive and calm requires a healthy mom, which we all know.

Facebook launches petition feature, its next battlefield

Gather a mob and Facebook will now let you make political demands. Tomorrow Facebook will encounter a slew of fresh complexities with the launch of Community Actions, its News Feed petition feature. Community Actions could unite neighbors to request change from their local and national elected officials and government agencies. But it could also provide vocal interest groups a bully pulpit from which to pressure politicians and bureaucrats with their fringe agendas.

Community Actions embodies the central challenge facing Facebook. Every tool it designs for positive expression and connectivity can be subverted for polarization and misinformation. Facebook’s membership has swelled into such a ripe target for exploitation that it draws out the worst of humanity. You can imagine misuses like “Crack down on [minority group]” that are offensive or even dangerous but some see as legitimate. The question is whether Facebook puts in the forethought and aftercare to safeguard its new tools with proper policy and moderation. Otherwise each new feature is another liability.

Community Actions roll out to the entire US tomorrow after several weeks of testing in a couple of markets. Users can add a title, description, and image to their Community Action, and tag relevant government agencies and officials who’ll be notified. Facebook is purposefully trying to focus Community Actions to be more narrowly concentrated on spurring government action than just any random cause. “Building informed and civically engaged communities is at the core of Facebook’s mission. Every day, people come together on Facebook to advocate for causes they care about, including by contacting their elected officials, launching a fundraiser, or starting a group. Through these and other tools, we have seen people marshal support for and get results on issues that matter to them. Community Action is another way for people to advocate for changes in their communities and partner with elected officials and government agencies on solutions.”

The question will be where Facebook’s moderators draw the line on what’s appropriate as a Community Action, and the ensuing calls of bias that line will trigger. Facebook is employing a combination of user flagging, proactive algorithmic detection, and human enforcers to manage the feature. But what the left might call harassment, the right might call free expression. If Facebook allows controversial Community Actions to persist, it could be viewed as complicit with their campaigns, but could be criticized for censorship if it takes one down. Like fake news and trending topics, the feature could become the social network’s latest can of worms.

Facebook is trying to prioritize local Actions where community members have a real stake. It lets user display “constituent” badges so their elected officials know they aren’t just a distant rabble-rouser. It’s why Facebook will not allow President Donald Trump or Vice President Mike Pence to be tagged in Community Actions. But you’re free to tag all your state representatives demanding nude parks, apparently.

Another issue is how people can stand up against a Community Action. Only those who Support one may join in its discussion feed. That might lead trolls to falsely pledge their backing just to stir up trouble in the comments. Otherwise, Facebook tells me users will have to share a Community Action to their own feed with a message of disapproval, or launch their own in protest. My concern is that an agitated but niche group could drive a sense of false equivocacy by using Facebook Groups or message threads to make it look like there’s as much or more support for a vulgar cause or against of a just one. A politician could be backed into a corner and forced to acknowledge radicals or bad-faith actors lest they look negligent

While Facebook’s spokesperson says initial tests didn’t surface many troubles, the company is trying to balance safety with efficiency and it will consider how to evolve the feature in response to emergent behaviors. New York’s Raise the Age Overhaul Wins Early Praise

Nearly a year after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed Raise the Age legislation moving 16- and 17-year-olds out of the adult justice system, state government officials and youth advocates say conditions are significantly improving for teens in trouble with the law.

In a report released earlier this month, members of the Governor’s Raise the Age Implementation Task Force declared that the law had been “successfully implemented,” citing six months of data showing large declines in youth arrests, arraignments, detention, and sentencing.

“The Raise the Age law has transformed the youth justice system in New York by reducing the involvement of young people in the justice system, increasing opportunities for diversion and intervention to promote successful outcomes, as well as providing age-appropriate facilities,” said Janine Kava, director of public information for New York’s Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).

DCJS oversaw the reform’s county-by-county rollout alongside the state’s Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS).

Under the new law, since last October 1, 16-year-olds facing misdemeanor charges have been processed in family court, which emphasize rehabilitation for youth, and keep youth court records sealed. Data collected from October to March shows that 82 percent of 16-year-olds facing felony charges were also sent to family court.

According to youth justice advocates, that statistic alone suggests the law is working.

“That is really encouraging,” said Naomi Post, executive director of the New York chapter of the Children’s Defense Fund and a member of the task force. “I’m feeling cautiously optimistic that the goals we set are being met.”

Sixteen-year-olds arrested on felony charges are still arraigned in adult criminal courts, but by specially trained judges in new courtrooms called the Youth Part. Most nonviolent felonies are automatically moved to family court within weeks, unless prosecutors convince Youth Part judges to keep the case.

About 94 percent of non-violent felony cases and 73 percent of violent felony cases ended up in family court over the law’s first six months. Post says her organization wanted 100 percent of teens’ cases moved to family court, but is pleased with how many felony defendants are making it out of the Youth Part.

Removals are not the only metric where advocates see evidence of progress.

Arrests of 16-year-olds declined from October to March, accelerating a trend that began in 2010. No 16-year-olds were detained in adult prisons or jails after October 1, and 72 percent of 16-year-olds arrested on felony charges were released at arraignment, some under supervision.

Commissioners of DCJS and OCFS, Michael Green and Sheila Poole, co-chaired the 15-member task force, which also included law enforcement and advocates. The law required them to deliver last week’s report to the state’s top-two legislative leaders.

A spokesperson for Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie said his office is reviewing the report. Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins’ office did not reply to requests for comment.

David M. Hoovler, the district attorney for Orange County and president of the state’s District Attorney Association, said the state should model other recent criminal justice reforms after the Raise the Age rollout.

“The law’s first year is being touted as a success and this is no doubt because of the availability of services and resources designed to redirect and rehabilitate offenders through programming, supervision and support,” he said in an e-mailed statement.

“I urge our lawmakers to look at the careful planning, scrutiny and investment that is still being committed to Raise the Age and see if we can apply some of those concepts to the implementation of discovery and bail reform.”

Some Upstate Counties Resist

While the task force report presents a rosy picture of the law’s first six months, preliminary data revealed differences between New York City and the rest of the state. Outside New York City, youth accused of violent felonies are remaining in the more punitive adult criminal court’s Youth Part at a higher rate than their counterparts in the city.

About 78 percent of 16-year-olds charged with violent felonies in New York City had their cases move to family court, compared to 64 percent in the rest of the state. (The handling of non-violent felony cases did not vary between the city and the rest of the state.)

Similarly, about 78 percent of New York City 16-year-olds were released upon arraignment in the Youth Part, compared to 64 percent in the rest of the state.

William Leahy, director of the state’s Office of Indigent Legal Services and a Raise the Age task force member, said he brought up these issues to the group, and hopes the state will address disparities in how cases are handled.

“The quality of justice should not depend on where a case happens to take place.”

Teen suspects outside New York City have also been impacted by the availability of detention spaces compliant with new regulations created with Raise the Age.

In Onondaga County, sheriff’s deputies and Syracuse police officers refused to leave the room while Youth Part defendants met with their attorneys, citing department policy and the lack of an interview room compliant with Raise the Age supervision requirements, according to court documents.

Legal Aid Services of Central New York filed a lawsuit on the teens’ behalf, and a judge issued a preliminary injunction in August requiring the county to provide a private interview room.

Some teens around the state are being detained pre-trial far from their families and lawyers. About a third of 16-year-olds sent to detention outside New York City were sent more than a county away, with some sent hours from home. In 55 counties, there is no “specialized secure detention facility” certified to hold teens with higher-level criminal cases in the Youth Part.

Monica Mahaffey, assistant commissioner for communications at OCFS, said out-of-county placements were already routine for younger teens who were sent to detention while their cases were processed in family court. Further, she said the early months of Raise the Age extended a decade-long decline in the use of detention, demonstrating that community-based alternatives to detention are working.

Still, Mahaffey said state and local agencies are looking into ways to mitigate the consequences of detaining teens far from home.

“Moving forward, some counties are considering an expansion of bed capacity or construction of a new facility, based upon need. The state is also exploring the use of video interface to connect youth to their families when they are placed further from home,” Mahaffey said.

Advocates have previously told The Chronicle they hope the state focuses on increasing community-based programming for youth instead of creating more detention space.

The Next Phase

Despite perceived early success for Raise the Age, stakeholders are bracing themselves for 17-year-olds to follow 16-years-olds into the juvenile justice system starting in October.

“With the 17-year-olds, it’s not just one extra year, it’s one year older as well. It’s like having that second child if you’re a parent,” said Leahy,

“It’s more than twice as hard.”

Meridith Sopher, a vice president at the New York City nonprofit Sheltering Arms, which runs non-secure detention facilities, among other family services, said supporting 17-year-olds returning to the community will bring new challenges.

“The biggest adjustment will be for youth who come to us and get discharged to live independently instead of living with family members,” she said. “How do we ensure that they continue to get the same kind of support in aftercare?”

Counties are responsible for making sure those services will be available for the 17-year-olds – alongside expanded alternatives to detention, and youth-specific detention. But the state funds much of that work.

Stephen Acquario, executive director of the New York Association of Counties, has been assisting county governments adapting to Raise the Age. He said the counties expect to secure reimbursement funds allocated in the state budget for Raise the Age.

“We look forward to continuing to work with the governor, state agencies, and the state legislature to ensure proper implementation of the law, and full funding of RTA-related county costs is part of the 2019-20 state budget,” Acquario said.

In an e-mailed statement, he added that “by all accounts, we believe implementation has been a smooth process up to this point.”

The Raise the Age Implementation Task Force is scheduled to deliver a second report next August, covering the law’s first year and the first six months of phase two.

“The challenge will be to sustain progress towards more humane treatment of kids, because with my decades of public defense, I know there’s always a backlash,” said Leahy of the state’s indigent defense support office.

“It’s hard to keep going through the challenges, which you can’t script. They will surface.”

Facebook launches petition feature, its next battlefield

Gather a mob and Facebook will now let you make political demands. Tomorrow Facebook will encounter a slew of fresh complexities with the launch of Community Actions, its News Feed petition feature. Community Actions could unite neighbors to request change from their local and national elected officials and government agencies. But it could also provide vocal interest groups a bully pulpit from which to pressure politicians and bureaucrats with their fringe agendas.

Community Actions embodies the central challenge facing Facebook. Every tool it designs for positive expression and connectivity can be subverted for polarization and misinformation. Facebook’s membership has swelled into such a ripe target for exploitation that it draws out the worst of humanity. You can imagine misuses like “Crack down on [minority group]” that are offensive or even dangerous but some see as legitimate. The question is whether Facebook puts in the forethought and aftercare to safeguard its new tools with proper policy and moderation. Otherwise each new feature is another liability.

Community Actions start to roll out to the US tomorrow after several weeks of testing in a couple of markets. Users can add a title, description, and image to their Community Action, and tag relevant government agencies and officials who’ll be notified. The goal is to make the Community Action go viral and get people to hit the “Support” button. Community Actions have their own discussion feed where people can leave comments, create fundraisers, and organize Facebook Events or Call Your Rep campaigns. Facebook displays the numbers of supporters behind a Community Action, but you’ll only be able to see the names of those you’re friends with or that are Pages or public figures.

Facebook is purposefully trying to focus Community Actions to be more narrowly concentrated on spurring government action than just any random cause. That means it won’t immediately replace Change.org petitions that can range from the civilian to the absurd. But one-click Support straight from the News Feed could massively reduce the friction to signing up, and thereby attract organizations and individuals seeking to maximize the size of their mob.

You can check out some examples here of Community Actions here like a non-profit Colorado Rising calling for the governor to put a moratorium on oil and gas drilling, citizens asking the a Florida’s mayor and state officials to build a performing arts center, and a Philadelphia neighborhood association requesting that the city put in crosswalks by the library. I fully expect one of the first big Community Actions will be the social network’s users asking Senators to shut down Facebook or depose Mark Zuckerberg.

The launch follows other civic-minded Facebook features like its Town Hall and Candidate Info for assessing politicians, Community Help for finding assistance after a disaster, and local news digest Today In. A Facebook spokesperson who gave us the first look at Community Actions provided this statement:

“Building informed and civically engaged communities is at the core of Facebook’s mission. Every day, people come together on Facebook to advocate for causes they care about, including by contacting their elected officials, launching a fundraiser, or starting a group. Through these and other tools, we have seen people marshal support for and get results on issues that matter to them. Community Action is another way for people to advocate for changes in their communities and partner with elected officials and government agencies on solutions.”

The question will be where Facebook’s moderators draw the line on what’s appropriate as a Community Action, and the ensuing calls of bias that line will trigger. Facebook is employing a combination of user flagging, proactive algorithmic detection, and human enforcers to manage the feature. But what the left might call harassment, the right might call free expression. If Facebook allows controversial Community Actions to persist, it could be viewed as complicit with their campaigns, but could be criticized for censorship if it takes one down. Like fake news and trending topics, the feature could become the social network’s latest can of worms.

Facebook is trying to prioritize local Actions where community members have a real stake. It lets user display “constituent” badges so their elected officials know they aren’t just a distant rabble-rouser. It’s why Facebook will not allow President Donald Trump or Vice President Mike Pence to be tagged in Community Actions. But you’re free to tag all your state representatives demanding nude parks, apparently.

Another issue is how people can stand up against a Community Action. Only those who Support one may join in its discussion feed. That might lead trolls to falsely pledge their backing just to stir up trouble in the comments. Otherwise, Facebook tells me users will have to share a Community Action to their own feed with a message of disapproval, or launch their own in protest. My concern is that an agitated but niche group could drive a sense of false equivocacy by using Facebook Groups or message threads to make it look like there’s as much or more support for a vulgar cause or against of a just one. A politician could be backed into a corner and forced to acknowledge radicals or bad-faith actors lest they look negligent

While Facebook’s spokesperson says initial tests didn’t surface many troubles, the company is trying to balance safety with efficiency and it will consider how to evolve the feature in response to emergent behaviors. The trouble is that open access draws out the trolls and grifters seeking to fragment society. Facebook will have to assume the thorny responsibility of shepherding the product towards righteousness and defining what that even means. If it succeeds, there’s an amazing opportunity here for citizens to band together to exert consensus upon government. A chorus of voices carries much further than a single cry.

The ombudsman’s office has changed their policies now to disadvantage people with learning disabilities and their carers. If a complaint has been made about bad unlawful treatment by social care then the ombudsman decides on cases brought to them, regardless of the effects of the actions of social care on carers with full capacity. The ombudsman will be at liberty to decide whether they take the case on if the cared for lacks capacity.

This rule is yet another rule to prevent justice and therefore to encourage the Council to continue ‘doing as they like’. I will wait and see what they decide in my son’s case. Luckily not all my cases with the Council have this restriction and to be fair the only reason these new rules are in place is to create longer access to any form of justice.

It doesn’t help given the kind of treatment my son and myself have received from the Council.

I don’t want them to get away with any of their recent serious misconducts such as the harassment I have received in weapon form for daring to question the lacking support my son has on 117 aftercare.  This was a personal vendetta carried out by the management of the service. I had 1 team manager and 1 group manager preforming vendettas which were conducted with malice, in my opinion.

I have reason to form that opinion having been the victim of 2 false safeguards which were dropped as they should never have been conducted in the first place. One of those safeguards was very traumatic as the manager of the service due to her personal dislike decided as I was out when the safeguarding officers arrived unannounced, that she would send the police with them on the next visit.

I did contact the consultant and my son’s advocate at the time, regarding the threat the team manager Andrea Ohaka-Daniel made before she carried her threat out without good reason. The 2 professionals should have made sure Ohaka-Daniel didn’t carry out her threat but they stood by and allowed it to take place causing months of trauma to my son who was frightened by the police presence.

He is an autistic young man with learning disabilities who had already had a few bad experiences with the police due to his detention in hospital. On home leave, he was too scared to return to the hospital and hid under his bed and because he lacks capacity. He didn’t understand he MUST return to hospital, as the clock strikes 9.

Instead of using common sense the hospital preferred to order riot police and 6 of them turned up to smash his bedroom door down and smash his bed up and drag him out of my home in front of all of my neighbours.

Andrea Ohaka-Daniel knew about this as I told her but she still wickedly sent police with her staff on a false safeguarding which was the second one she personally authorized within a year.

Worse still it was referred to at a much later 117 meeting and after the false matter was actually dropped by the service. So there is a situation where even after a matter is dropped that the false accusation is still brought up as if it’s a service trophy of some kind and then used against to belittle someone falsely accused. That particular situation at a meeting concerning my son should have never occurred.

As predicted, I received 2 letters sent to my son’s G.P. which naturally had to be of course primarily negative in content. However, saying that it is making the reassessment process look even more pathetic and an unnecessary delaying tactic of both services for my son needs. No reassessment of his needs actually needed to be conducted and it only has been in order to heavily delay full support coming forth by continuing healthcare.

As far as I can see, and judging on a phone call I had the other day, yet another meeting taking up my time going over my son’s disabilities, yet again is arranged to take place, next week.

Whether that meeting will speed up the allowance of support from continuing healthcare is yet to be seen. The person who phoned me to arrange this meeting seemed annoyed and was abrupt concerning her meeting request.

She may not be overly pleased but neither am I at the slowness of getting proper support in place. All I can say this meeting will be taking up my time when I really need to be resting for that actual evening’s care which includes overnight wake-up’s and early morning care right up until afternoon in fact. No to mention that meeting will be taking place straight after I have finished a straight 15 hrs care the night before. I’m on my own conducting this care for an adult son with severe disabilities every night.

If I don’t see or hear of any outcomes I will be very annoyed. I can see I’m going to have to contact the health ombudsman as well if this continues.

I can’t say I’m not angry at the length of time and the effort it takes to deal these services complaint systems and their ombudsman. I think it is fully out of order that red tape and catch 22’s are stumbling blocks in order to get some form of justice.

I’m used to catch 22’s as I have been dealing with them all my adult life since I’ve had my son. I am more than able to get past a catch 22 in place but I shouldn’t have to. It requires a huge amount of brain power to work out exactly how to pass and normally some privately educated bigheaded and thoughtless nob has normally created the use of the catch 22.

I also know it hurts when a so-called watertight catch 22 is burst by an unpaid carer who has been thought to be destined to never be able to outsmart the catch 22 maker. All I can say it serves them right for placing obstacles in the way to disadvantage the already disadvantaged, such as people with learning disabilities and their carers.

It is pretty disgusting given all the care I provide unpaid that even though my son is entitled to get help with legal aid, that I can’t under the present climate, get some help with the bulk of the legal load and have to do it myself.

Not on really.
