I never thought of Lucien and Vassa as a romantic couple until I joined tumblr and saw how people shipped them, like I genuinely never saw Lucien swooning over her like some people claim he has.
In fact when I first read the book I thought that she had more chemistry with Jurian whereas with Lucien she had a good friendship.

Found this comment on Reddit. Couldn’t explain it better than this.
“It’s clear from Mist and Fury that the original ships were: Feysand, Nessian, Elucien, and Mor/Azriel. Like it’s so obvious the way she wrote Mor and Azriel; Mor even seems vaguely interested/torn about Az. Looking at interviews, SJM even talks about Elucien as a couple (eg where would they like to travel together, etc).
Flash forward to ACOWAR. For whatever reason (lack of chemistry with Az, wanting more diversity) SJM has Mor say that she prefers women. This time the Az-pining-for-Mor is more desperate/feels like a zero chance of being requited. SJM also introduces Az as a potential love interest for Elain because she loves throwing a wrench. Just because Elucien are mates doesn’t mean they’ll have it easy; SJM’s whole thing is angst. She had to throw in a love triangle to make it uncertain. This is the first couple where mate status is confirmed upon meeting.
But there’s a problem now. If Az and Mor are no longer endgame, who will they end up with? is it not suspicious that the two new characters introduced in SF (Gwyn and Emerie) just HAPPEN to be potentially be good partners for Az and Mor? Like it’s not a coincidence that Emerie looks at Mor and blushes, remarking how pretty she is. It’s not a coincidence that Az and Gwyn have so many interactions in the text. It’s not a coincidence that a “random side character” shows up in a bonus chapter.
When SJM created Gwyn and Emerie, it wasn’t just to give Nesta friends. These characters clearly didn’t exist when she wrote MAF. SJM wanted new characters that would solve her retcon of ending Az/Mor. She wanted to solve the Mor/Az retcon so bad that she created a NEW RETCON of Az going to Sangravah. Like why bother to add that detail if it’s not important.
Also: poor Lucien. His endgame heroine was supposed to be Nesta until SJM realized they would be terrible together and that Nessian had better chemistry. So she gives Elucien the mating bond. Like is she really going to fuck Lucien over TWICE? She loves him as a character and has put him through the wringer. Yes, I agree that SJM can change her mind and maybe is open to mate rejection, but Lucien has already switched love interests from Nesta to Elain! Who else is he going to switch to, considering that Jurian and Vassa are “at each other’s throats?”
Finally, please think about the number of books left. Ignoring novellas (which are probably gonna be fluffy ones like ACOFAS where nothing happens), there are two main books left. Two couples.
Option A:
• Gwynriel (Valkyrie growth, Illyrian rebellion, exploring Ramiel, Gwyn’s autumn heritage and maybe lightsinger?? powers)
• Elucien (Helion secret baby, defeating Koschei, freeing Vassa, fixing spring court)
Option B
• Elriel (mate rejection storyline, potentially some stuff above)
• ?????
Literally WHO is the second book in this equation? Lucien and Vassa?? We barely know Vassa and there’s barely any connection to Night Court. And Lucien’s book is going to be depressing as fuck dealing with mate rejection; does anyone want to read two heavy books of rejection? Jurian and Vassa: again, we barely know them! At least with Tower of Dawn, Chaol had been a main character for a long time with POV. SJM will not do a full-length Emerie/Mor book as much as I would love for one. She’s very cognizant of criticism re: Mor bi rep in the past; she doesn’t want to open a can of worms and be accused of writing bad sapphic rep. If anything, I can see a fluffy Emerie/Mor novella with little angst (or them getting together in the background of other books).
So from a meta structural level, I don’t understand who the second couple will be if Elriel is endgame. Lucien/Vassa is the most plausible answer, but 1) we barely know Vassa, 2) she’s human and Lucien is immortal. So are we going to toss her into the Cauldron to make her immortal? Serious question, and 3) I don’t want TWO books about mate rejection, it’s depressing as hell. I can see one but not two.
But with Gwynriel and Elucien, you have enormous fan and audience interest in ALL FOUR CHARACTERS. They’re directly tied to Night Court and SJM so far has no intention of staying away from the core group.”

I loved all of what Sarah highlighted in her interview today and I'll elaborate a bit especially on the romance part:
In Maas’ fantasy worlds, love interests often exist as fated “mates,” with invisible strings between them that are powerful and often poetic. Readers can see the literary metaphors, like complementary powers between two characters. But other times, there are no metaphors, with their connection initially seeming random.
She's too attached to the mate trope and I like that she gives us different cases and scenarios for it, otherwise it'll be boring.
“Sometimes, I will write a scene with two characters that I’ve planned for them to get together, and then they have no …” She shakes her head slightly at me. “It’s like holding two dolls and being like, now kiss! And they won’t. … And then sometimes a different character will walk in and they will just” — she snaps.
I yelled at this part because it's as if she plucked the scene from Azriel's bonus chapter and used it as an example. Those parallels between Elain and Gwyn are intentional. It doesn't mean Elain is bad it's just their dynamic doesn't work as a couple and it was obvious to the author. I know she didn't specify who this was about but like, come on, who tried to kiss and which character showed up in a bonus chapter after that depressing scene and gave a glimmer of hope?
“It feels like magic in a way where, as much as I tried to plot out things years in advance, I let my characters guide a story. And they usually wind up with the people that they need to be with and who offer them the most growth and joy.”
I love this so much and allow me to speak about my favorite ship and its because the snippets we saw of Az and Gwyn together especially in the bonus chapter brought out a lighter version of Az. His scenes with Gwyn were light-hearted and the bonus chapter ends on a hopeful note for them. It's hard to deny that connection between them whether you theorize she's luring him or they're mates, those theories wouldn't exist if she had no ties to him (she's in his own chapter like come on).
I go the philosophical route with my next question: We’re talking about fate here, but at what point is a character the agent of their own fate? What happens if someone rejects their mate? (Listen, if I were Fae and I didn’t like my mate, whatever God chose for me is not my business.)
People are jumping the gun and assume this example is set to be Elucien but... we have Helion and Lady of Autumn likely being an example of a tragic rejected mates story (if you read ACOWAR and their history it's obvious they're mates). Maybe it's Mor and Eris and that's the secret that ties them to each other. We have other characters from other series too.
For a convincing mate rejection story in my opinion, it needs more than one book or it's a case that we see with side characters where we can see their history and the long-term implications of a rejected bond.
It's too easy of a story to have one person's central conflict be the words "no I reject you" and they're done. Again, this is not exclusive to ACOTAR but also her other series.
“That’s something I find to be very interesting,” she replies. “What if the forces that be put you with the wrong person? Or what if you just decide, eh, I’m not interested. … There’s a lot to explore within the concept of mates and your agency about it.
The concept of agency is something many readers in the fandom discussed especially when it comes to mating bonds and there were arguments on (would Rhys fell for Feyre if she wasn't his mate or would have Cassian fell for Nesta if she wasn't his mate). We know that some mates don't work out but stay together because their dynamic is unhealthy (Rhys's and Tamlin's parents). We got examples of a loveless mating bond already.
We also saw that Nesta didn't immediately accept the term "mate" because it would mean cutting off her last tether with humanity. It's not a matter of "you're my mate" "yes I'll be with you", the dynamic between the mated couple is important to explore.
“I’m not going to say if I am exploring it in future books or not,” she continues, “but it definitely offers a wealth of things to explore with this concept of freewill and what is true love. Is it something that’s destined? Or is it something that you make? Is it both?”
This part aligns with what I think about Elucien. We never had a mated pairing who knew they were mates but are not in love with each other. Every mated couple found out they're mates when they were already in love.
Can a destined love turn into true love? Or do you settle for a destined love without love being in the equation. Love wasn't in the equation for Rhys's parents, but love was the equation for Feysand and Nessian. Elucien was left unexplored for a reason and both Elain and Lucien view each other by label "mate", they didn't have a chance to get to know each other. So it's going to be very interesting to see them navigate their feelings for each other despite the mating bond.
I didn't expect her to elaborate a lot on this but I love that she did and I hope in future interviews she gives us more good bits about her writing and examples of the decisions she took for some characters and couples.
Didn't expect this post to be long but happy reading! I'm still reeling from HOFAS 🥲

You know what’s really funny? These so-called Gwyn stans going feral when someone says “I don’t know who Gwyn is” and claiming we’re all toxic and misogynistic for that alone.
Like, no, babe. People genuinely do not even remember who she is, and it has nothing to do with a certain bat boy.
When I was first reading ACOTAR at the behest of my friend, I did cheat a little and look up fan art before I finished the series. I saw Gwynriel fan art and asked my friend who is this redhead, and she literally said “honestly, no idea.” And I can assure you, my friend is way, WAY too busy to have a secret agenda against a fictional character so she genuinely forgot all about Gwyn. And before you even start, she doesn’t even ship Elriel, she hardcore ships Elucien.
Gwyn is very much a side character. Her purpose was to be Nesta’s friend, to be a part of Nesta’s healing journey. Nobody really remembers her outside of that.
ACOTAR is not TOG, nor is it CC. People keep bringing up Lidia from CC, and are forgetting CC has 3 books, and Lidia showed up as a main character in book 2. She got a POV in HOFAS, and the way CC was set up was always multiple POVs of many, many characters.
ACOTAR is not like that. We follow Feyre for 3 books (with some Rhys POV here and there), then get one novella of multiple POVs, then we follow dual POV of Nesta & Cassian.
Where in that story format do you see space for a background character to get an entire book?
Gwyn literally did not exist until book 5/7(?) of ACOTAR. She has not had a POV. She has not been mentioned outside of Nesta. She has no story, no plot, outside of Nesta. She does not exist outside of Nesta.
Nobody has an issue with Gwyn. Nobody is “anti-Gwyn”. Nobody’s out to get her.
She has like 4 pages of page presence in ACOSF. Do you know how long this book is and how many things happen? Why of all things would I fixate on a minor character in the background?
That’s like if I finished reading ACOTAR and was like, “omg but tell me about Alis, I must have an entire book about her journey and trauma. She must be SO important.” (Even Alis, btw had more presence in the series than Gwyn)
It’s not a personal thing at all. I don’t hate Gwyn. I don’t have any opinions on her, really.
How can we hate a character we don’t even care to remember in the first place?

The Hunger Games Parallels
Katniss and Peeta were forced into a situationship. - Elucien mating bond
The second they won the games she started ignoring him. - Elucien after the war
They were still at odds going into their second games. - Elucien in SF
She kissed Gale right before. - Elain with Az
By the end of the series, Katniss and Peeta were married with children. - Looking forward to filling in Elucien's portion here.
The above is why I hate the argument that because Elain currently looks as if she's not interested in Lucien, that can't change.
During the first games it appeared Katniss might have feelings for Peeta. Initially she wasn't sure whether he was the enemy, whether he could be trusted, but she still expressed concern over his well being (just like Elain with Lucien "you betrayed us" which turned into making sure Lucien wasn't hurt after the war).
But Katniss completely backtracked on that in book 2. She claimed anything they shared in the games was an act, it was only to stay alive. Parallel to that Elain's softening towards Lucien in ACOWAR completely regressed in the novella. Suddenly she wants nothing to do with a male or a mate. Both Katniss and Elain (though different in their personalities) pushed away "the good guy" because of circumstance. They were convinced their feelings couldn't possibly be real, they refused to believe that they were anything more than a manipulation brought about by something they were forced into. Katniss went on to share a kiss with Gale, confusing her feelings about everything even more. Enter Solstice and E/riel stage left. Katniss had history with Gale, he was someone she CHOSE to spend her time with even as she CHOSE to push Peeta away. But eventually the way Katniss viewed her circumstances changed, what she wanted changed and she and Peeta (the boy who had always longed for her, who was willing to sacrifice his own life so that she might live and be happy) ended up together. It's incredible how many stories, popular stories, exist like this yet some still hold fast to the idea that because Elain doesn't currently appear to want Lucien that means they're definitely not happening. I know of many more stories where the above is the norm compared to stories where a rejected bond ends in a HEA for anyone.

Vassa
I see quite a few people who ship Lucien with Vassa and ask why Lucien stans want Lucien with someone who doesn't want him (Elain) so I just wanted to address this: 1. We don't actually have any confirmation Elain doesn't want Lucien. Is she avoiding him? Yes. But that's because she's running from her problems, the mating bond on the top of her list. When she was begging for Graysen to take her back (barf), she still managed to say "His name is Lucien." Am I really supposed to believe she hates him? Nesta was avoiding Cassian too but it's canon that she still wanted him. But she didn't want the mating bond. Elain is similar in this way. And going after Azriel is an easy way to avoid her problems. She has had a ton of time to reject the bond and hasn't, which is telling.
2. It may seem superficial to think about, but Vassa is a human. Lucien is immortal. There is no way for this to work unless Lucien bounds his life to hers like Lorcan, and I just don't see that happening, because Lucien is destined to play a bigger role in Prythian which would really make binding his life to a human's unfeasable. 3. Neither Lucien nor Vassa is interested. Lucien is canonically seen to be looking at Elain with longing at the end of ACOSF. "Cassian’s heart strained at the pain etching deep into Lucien’s face as he tried to hide his disappointment and longing." And I'm pretty sure Vassa is into Jurian (a pairing that makes sense since they're both human)
“And Jurian and Vassa?” “At each other’s throats, as they like to be,” he said, a tad sharply.
Vassa rolled her eyes, then looked to Lucien, who sank onto the sofa beside Jurian. Like the Fae male had settled similar arguments between them before. Sounds like Lucien is the middle man between Jassa. 4. Vassa is not like Jesminda. Yes, they're both described as wild, but Jesminda's was described as a carefree, joyful spirit whereas Vassa's wild is described as warriorlike. Besides, being similar to somebody you did love doesn't mean you're going to fall in love with them too. 5. I think people underestimate the depth of Lucien's love for Jesminda. In this way, Lucien's story is kind of similar to Rowan's, only Rowan was hoodwinked by a spell. Lucien, on the other hand, loved Jesminda so much he genuinely believed she was his mate. The only kind of love that could ever compare to that is his true mating bond, which in Faelore makes marriage seem insignificant. Rowan, too, could never get over Lyria until he met his true mate, Aelin. 6. I'll be the first to admit I'm disappointed with Elain thus far. But it is canon that we haven't seen all Elain has to offer yet. And I believe once she gets her head out of her ass she'll be perfect for Lucien. For one, they're both excellent speakers, despise violence, have been constantly underestimated and frankly disrespected by the IC, both lost their first loves in a painful manner (I know Elain's love isn't dead, but he might as well be), were both ripped from their homes and forced to settle in a place where they're not very comfortable. 7. Only when Lucien arrived did Elain start to eat properly. Only when Lucien was there did Elain show her powers. Only when Lucien was there did she start to come out of her shell. Lucien was the only one who actually understood what she needed. I don't give a shit if Azriel discovered her seer powers; that doesn't make him a mate in any way. Understanding her power doesn't constitute understanding her. By this same token, you could say Lucien understood that Nesta's power was a cold fire first. Mates! Actually there's more evidence in favor of this since Sarah had originally made the two of them mates lol. Nesta asked Elain what she wanted and she said Sunshine. And it was constantly said that the Spring court would be perfect for Elain. Guess who is the heir to the Day Court and has serious connections with the Spring Court. Yes! Lucien Spell-Cleaving Vanserra! 8. Have you SEEN the elucien fanart??? You expect me not to ship them after seeing it?? I'm pretty sure Vassien was created so that people could get rid of Lucien in favor of Ewriel anyway.

An Unexpected Visit [ Elucien ]
Prompt: Drunk Elucien requested by ‘nonnie. Genre: Fluff Rating: SFW
Tumblr media
“Y-You’re very pretty.” Lucien said with a hiccup and Elain blinked rapidly, giving him a confused look.
“Um…thank you but I don’t understand what you’re doing here at this hour, Lucien.” She said softly and tightened her robe around her sleeping gown. It was past midnight and normally Elain would’ve already been asleep. But she had been so engrossed in the book Nesta had recommended that she hadn’t noticed the time.
Until Lucien had showed up.
He hadn’t come to her door — hadn’t knocked to be let in. He had simply winnowed into her room and Elain had bit back a scream at his sudden appearance.
While Lucien was always welcome, she would’ve liked a warning. At a much earlier hour.
Lucien swayed slightly and a flicker of annoyance flashed across his face. “I came, Elain, because I l-like you and wanted to t-talk to you without everyone else sticking their nose into our d-damn conversation.” He slurred and pointed at her. “You are a very hard woman to c-catch alone.”
“So you decide to just come uninvited to my bedroom at one in the morning, drunk?” she asked him with an arched brow.
“The drinking was an a-accident.”
“How so?”
“Well…” he began and then looked at Elain with wide eyes, his expression matching a deer caught in the wild and she resisted the urge to giggle. “See, I wanted to s-speak to you right after dinner but Nesta kept murdering me with her eyes and F-Feyre kept laughing at me so I thought if I had some liquid c-courage, I would feel better about this conversation.”
“And do you feel better about this conversation now?” She asked, amused. She watched him scrunch his nose, his scar becoming more noticeable with the movement and Lucien nodded and then shook his head.
“I think I had t-too much liquid courage.” He mumbled then hiccuped, his hands clenching and unclenching at his sides, eyes wandering the room. “Can I s-stay? I don’t know how to go back to my room.”
Elain ran a hand down her face. “I don’t really think that’s appropriate.” She said but as she said it, Lucien had already stumbled his way to her bed and sat on the edge of it, still blinking at the sight of her room. His eyes landed on a jacket that was resting on the back of her sitting chair in the corner and Elain flushed.
“You still have my jacket.” He said softly and blinked at her with a small smile. “I always wondered what happened to it.”
“Oh um. Well…” Elain began then slowly made her way next to him, taking a seat at the edge of the bed, leaving enough space between them. “I never did get a chance to give it back to you…I almost don’t want to. It, um, it brings me a sense of comfort.”
She had whispered that last part and curled a loose piece of hair behind her ear before risking a glance in his direction and Lucien was looking at her with delight in his drunken stupor.
“You don’t e-ever have to give it back.” He assured with a nod and smile. “I’m glad you still have it.
“But Elain?” He continued, his voice small.
“Yes?”
“Does this mean you l-like me too? B-Because I’m not sure if you do.” He slurred slowly, a frown forming on his lips and Elain watched as he glanced down at his hands in thought. “See, sometimes I think you d-do because you blush and g-giggle when we talk. And we went on a date, but then…,” he paused and shook his head again, his frown turning into a pout. ”But if you d-don’t, this is really embarrassing and I — I should leave and n-not come back.”
“Where would you go?” Elain asked, amusement in her tone and Lucien blinked slowly, his pout intensifying.
“Feyre said I could s-stay as long as I wanted. So probably to my r-room.”
“That’s not very far.” she said with a chuckle. “I still live here too.”
“But I’ll pretend I don’t see you.” Lucien said and nodded, then used a hand to cover his eyes. “S-See? I’m already doing it.”
Elain laughed softly then shook her head. “Lucien?”
“I-I’m pretending I don’t see you.”
“But you can still hear me?”
“…I can only c-cover one ear, Elain.”
She laughed again then pulled his hand away from his face. “You don’t have to do that, you know. I do like you.”
“You do?”
“Mm. I do. I would just like you a little better if you didn’t winnow into my room unannounced so I don’t end up dying of shock.” she mused.
Lucien looked at her silently for a moment then nodded slowly. Elain opened her mouth to continue but he suddenly stood, swaying slightly, and made his way over to her door then walked out, shutting it quietly behind him.
She blinked.
Then a knock came. Elain’s brows furrowed as she walked to her door and slowly opened it to find Lucien standing there.
“Well, hello.” Elain said, her lips twitching.
“Hello.” he replied then hiccuped. “May I c-come in?”
“At this hour? Empty-handed? Whatever could your intentions be, Lucien?” Elain said with a tilt of her head and a smile.
Lucien pursed his lips then held up a finger and turned around, glancing about the hallway until he found what he was looking for.
Elain’s light laughter filled the hall and she tried to stifle it as Lucien walked over to her, carrying a vase of flowers that had been placed in the hall for decorations.
“F-for you.” he merely said, handing her the vase and another giggle slipped from her lips.
“Interesting choice. Thank you.” she replied, looking at the vase and then back at him. “If I invite you into my bedroom, are you going to behave?”
He nodded with wide eyes. “Of course. I’m not an a-animal.” he replied then scowled. “Despite what Nesta says.”
“Does she hurt your feelings when she talks to you like that?” Elain teased as he stepped into her room and she closed the door.
“She’s mean.”
Elain chuckled at his childish tone and then placed the way too big vase on her vanity. Turning, she found him back at his spot at the edge of her bed, but instead of sitting, he was laying down. She bit back a smile.
“Sleepy?”
“A l-little.”
“You said you wanted to talk. What did you want to talk about, Lucien?” she asked, sitting down next to him except this time, she was closer.
Lucien turned his head, his eyes flickering to hers before turning back to stare at the ceiling. “I wanted to ask you on another d-date.” he mumbled then turned his head again to face her. “Do you w-want to go on a date with me?”
Elain smiled. “This is what you wanted to talk about without everyone around?”
He snorted. “Well yeah.” he sat back up, swaying slightly again. “Because this way, no one will know and we can keep the details p-private. Is that okay?”
“A private date?”
“N-no. Privately planned date. So no one c-can crash it. Like our last date.” he replied, nodding seriously and she chuckled.
“And where do you want to go on this privately planned date?”
“I w-want to take you to a garden show.” he hiccuped and Elain perked up. “It s-showcases all the different kinds of flowers across Prythian.”
“Here, in Velaris?” she asked breathlessly and Lucien nodded.
“Apparently it’s having its first show tomorrow afternoon. I heard that they’ve been putting it together for quite some time now using m-magical rocks to keep all the plants alive.” Lucien said and gave her a small smile. “I t-think it would be a nice place for a date.”
Elain smiled widely, her cheeks flushing in delight. “I think it would a perfect place for a date.”
Lucien’s smile matched hers. “Then it’s a d-date. Tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow.” Elain repeated then she paused. “But can I ask you to do something for me?”
“Anything.” he immediately replied, sitting up straighter. She gave him a small smile and then stood, making her way over to his jacket that hung on her chair.
“It’s been washed since then so it doesn’t really smell like you anymore…” she began, running a hand down the sleeve and then holding it out to him. “Would you wear it tomorrow? I’d like to associate it with better memories.”
His eyes flickered from the jacket to her face and Lucien nodded, his lips turning up at the corners. “O-Of course. I can do that for you.” he replied, reaching to take it from her but Elain stepped back, holding the jacket to her chest.
“But just so we’re clear, you have to give it back after the date.” she insisted, the flush on her cheeks deepening. “I —I want to keep it.”
Lucien’s lips twitched but he chuckled. “You have my word, the jacket is all yours afterward.”
“Then it’s a date.” Elain announced with a smile.
“It’s a date.” Lucien agreed with a smile of his own then hiccuped and flopped back down on her bed. “But can I s-stay? I really don’t remember the way back to my room.”
Elain rolled her eyes and tossed him the jacket. “Aren’t you skipping a few steps, Lucien? It’s usually after a few dates one invites himself into his date’s bedroom.”
He grinned at her. “My i-intentions are pure, mate.” he replied. “The most I’ll probably d-do is vomit.”
She crinkled her nose. “That’s quite the romantic gesture.”
“Anything for you.” he said with another hiccup, reaching out to poke her nose but ending up poking her cheek instead. “Please?”
Elain scanned his earnest expression, her heart thumping at his question. It wouldn’t hurt, would it? She liked having him here, close.
“You stay over the covers, I’ll sleep under them.” she finally said quietly and Lucien smiled and then nodded.
“Okay.”
“You’ll keep your hands to yourself?” she questioned with a warning in her tone, even though she already knew he would. Lucien gave her another serious nod and put a hand over his heart.
“P-Promise.”
Elain nodded then and the two moved. She gestured for him to take the side she normally didn’t sleep on and Lucien slid his shoes off eagerly, folded his jacket on the nightstand next to the bed, and then lay down comfortably on top of her sheets. Elain watched him, amusement coloring her face before chuckling quietly and then slipping under the sheets.
She had debated for a long moment on whether to take her robe off then waited to make sure he wasn’t looking at her before slipping it off. Elain turned on her side, facing him as he faced the ceiling with a sleepy smile on his face.
“You won’t get cold?” she asked suddenly and hesitantly reached a hand out as Lucien shook his head.
“Nope.” he replied and turned to face her, his eyes landing on her hand between them. “B-but if you get cold, I’ll be here for you.”
Elain smiled. “I thought you promised to keep your hands to yourself?”
“I don’t have to t-touch you to get you warm, Elain.” he replied quietly and met her gaze. Elain felt the bed heat beneath her and her brows went up in surprise. She laughed.
“Already showing me your moves in bed, Lucien?” she asked, flushing at her own bold question. He always did seem to bring out a different side to her.
Lucien grinned. “I figured a p-preview wouldn’t hurt.”
“Hopefully you won’t vomit and ruin it.” Elain said with a serious nod and he laughed.
“No p-promises there but I’ll make sure to face the other way.”
“So considerate, you are.”
“Now shush, Elain. We need to sleep so we’re awake for our date.” he mumbled. “T-try not to take advantage of me in my sleep.”
She rolled her eyes with a smile. “Oh, how will I survive the night then?”
“Tomorrow.” he slurred, bringing a hand to pat her hand that was still settled between them. “T-touch me all you want then.”
Elain chuckled and turned her palm up to settle it against his own. “Tomorrow then.”

I didn’t intend for this to be so long I apologize in advance😭
Have you or anyone mentioned this before?
What if when Elain and Lucien had their ambiguous meetup in WAR,.. what if Elain wanted to give Lucien a peck or a hug and be in the comfort of her stranger(!) mate and was drawn to him in a way she couldn’t fathom which is why she now keeps clear of him. It’s not hate, it could be confusion. People really exaggerate her being freaked out of the feeling of the bond. It is because SHE IS AWARE of it. We know this, Elain knows this, Lucien knows this, her sisters know this… there’s no need for readers to be all shocked pikachu face about Elain currently not wanting to be around Lucien. Nesta and Feyre or mostly anyone (especially someone like Elain who misses their old life) would’ve reacted similarly. If you’re only seeing the couple/pair and not the individual, isn’t it then harder to figure out what motivates that individual? Elain’s decision-making won’t have to do with someone else, that’s her own thing. What happens after a couple is formed is another thing (i.e. Feyre in TAR and MAF vs Feyre in WAR and SF where she makes plenty of decisions as a unit with Rhys aka when a couple gives into one another fully)
Yk, I can imagine it’s much scarier when you feel a pull to someone while knowing that somehow you both are connected biologically.. and they happen to be someone you just met. Feyre and Nesta were scared too when they found out they had mates! Heck they were a little intimidated when they first met the guys who were going to be their mates (duh they were among scary fae)
I think people tend to forget that Feyre and Nesta also took their time at different points of their own journey and in their relationships to figure out what kind of future they wanted. And they did this while away from their mates (i.e. Feyre accepted the bond before she gave Rhys her heart and body, so a more traditional romance approach, while she was alone at the cabin. And Nesta wanted to keep it strictly physical w/o the bond. Meaning keeping her heart/feelings out of it bc of her low self-worth. The aftermath of her fight w/ Cassian was spent with Emerie and Gwyn).
It’s actually perfect that Lucien is constantly away from Elain right now because otherwise it would all be much harder for her to process the situation she’s in. This exact courtesy given to Feyre and to Nesta by the author (all of this isn’t my thought I know this point has been made a lot!). Again, if we only think in terms of romance and not the individual then it’s going to be harder to understand why a character is making a certain choice
Idk how readers are interpreting these male characters but do they really think these males are they type to be like “we are now bound together, accept the bond or else; you must obey and come with me” I mean, SJM even found a way for Rhys to whisk away Feyre with her consent!
I think SJM likes showing different ways mates end up together and she’ll “select” a couple to demonstrate that. For example, Feysand= mates which one person isn’t aware of the bond because they grew up human, and it snapped for the fae without them revealing it to their mate and etc, etc. Elain and Lucien just happen to be the fated mates who had their bond snapped before they knew who the other was! Honestly SJM could’ve had any of her other couples go through with this. But also maybe there’s a specific reason- which she knows- for why she choose it for Elucien. Maybe it fits their characters best?
Authors are just puppet masters pulling at strings and coming up with possibilities y’all! There’s no need to act like these characters were done dirty because it was designed that way, pls for the love of the Mother. All that means is you have a problem with the story or writing and that’s not gonna change. So maybe it’s best for some people to look for other content?
Anyway- Elain is right now in the series taking the time to figure out what she wants (like her sisters did when they learned of their bonds!!) Maybe SJM could’ve elaborated with Feyre and Nesta and how they considered their options for the future? Lets be fr there’s a few details that SJM leaves out which tends to be important for the readers but not to her (maybe). But anyways the difference with Elain? She’s taking her time to decide and figure out the bond situation outside of her own book. As soon as Elain’s book is out why would she need to be away from Lucien any longer? Feyre had reason to be away from Rhys in MAF.- tamlin, her human life, etc. Nesta wanted to stay away from Cass at the beginning of SF because what even is a mate plus her self-worth issues. Do we wanna see this again with an Archeron in a whole book or rather it happening in the sidelines this time around? I mean with an Elain (Elucien) book they then have to be near each other at some point. NOW their story is beginning. I just expect it to have a happy ending:) <— Elain staying away from Lucien now but not later isn’t an original thought, I know this point has been made by many blogs!! Sooo I think this is what SJM is doing. Keeping them at a distance in the meantime. Because they won’t need it at some point.
It’s going to be different in Elain’s book because who wants a repeat of how Feyre and Nesta dealt with their bonds and their mates! We want some difference in the romance with each couple and how they handle big revelations! Authors love stepping out of their norm and showing variety, surely SJM will do that!
P.S this msg had a lot going on so if there’s anything you’d like clarification for pls feel free to say so :)
It's all good!
If there is one thing that SJM appears to have an issue with regarding fated pairs, it's the idea of instant love that often comes with fated mate tropes. She weaves into her narrative a desire to demonstrate why these pairs are perfect for each other and what her idea of a perfect match looks like.
As Elriel shippers and other non-shippers begin to realize, the bond itself serves as the primary conflict in Elain and Lucien’s story. It's something they both will tackle and eventually come to accept because this bond is now an intrinsic part of them. That's what I personally anticipate and look forward to in their story.
Upon rereading ACOMAF, I found my perspective shifted. Despite Feyre and Rhysand's bond snapping after Under the Mountain, Feyre still entertained thoughts of her upcoming wedding and pondered her future alongside Tamlin, all while feeling guilty and inexplicably drawn to Rhys. It wasn't until spending more time with Rhysand that Feyre began to recognize their shared desire to protect loved ones. This shift in perspective was crucial for Feyre, who grappled with her past actions, including the deaths of innocent faeries, and came to the realization that Rhysand had supported her far more than Tamlin had during her trials.
Rhysand's actions spoke volumes about his commitment to Feyre, even when she was unaware of his feelings. Conversely, it's somewhat frustrating when critics question why Lucien didn't do more for Feyre, especially when ACOMAF emphasizes the unique and profound nature of the mating bond. Lucien's efforts to support Feyre are acknowledged, but it's clear that Rhysand played a significant role in keeping her grounded. Similarly, Lucien's understanding of Elain's needs and his efforts to help her, such as demanding she be exposed to sunlight in ACOWAR, further illustrate the difference of their connection.
While there are limitations to the bond, it's unfair to hold Lucien to the same standard as Rhysand. Lucien and Feyre share a close bond, but they are not mates. Their relationship is distinct from Feyre's bond with Rhysand, which offers a unique level of support and understanding.
Similarly, Lucien demonstrated his understanding of Elain's needs in ACOWAR by demanding she be brought outside to the sun, just as Rhysand knew the music and images of the Night Court would help Feyre.
The passage of time is felt more keenly in Elucien's story compared to Feysand's and Nessian's. Feyre met Rhysand in Calanmai, saw him only once after a month, and then spent much of her time with Rhys Under the Mountain in a drugged state before returning home. It was only after two months that Rhys called in the bargain after Feyre reached out for help.
Nessian isn't exempt from this, either. There were four months between the war and Nesta and Cassian's confrontation, followed by another nine months before Cassian was sent to Nesta's apartment under orders for an intervention.
The difference lies in our experience of Elucien's time apart from each other. They are still included in other's stories, whereas we receive only a brief mention of the time lapse before the start of Feysand's and Nessian's story.
I often wonder if Nesta's and Elain's story drew inspiration from ACOMAF as some sort of "what if" scenario. For instance, what if Rhysand had decided to rescue Feyre himself, considering he kept hearing her vomiting, and that's what ACOSF explores? Or what if Rhysand hadn't winnowed away after their bond snapped after Under the Mountain, but instead blurted out to Feyre, rather than Mor, that she was his mate? Then Feyre went back to the Spring Court knowing she was Rhysand's mate. That is the essence of Elucien's story.
SJM does love to show the variations of the bond snapping. For instance, Kallias and Vivianne's bond snapped after they were married, Miryam was a slave present to Drakon, and Drakon set her free. Miryam had a relationship with Jurian, and while Jurian was seducing Clythia, that's when Miryam's and Drakon's bond snapped. We don't know when Tamlin's parents' bond snapped, but we do know that Rhysand's parents' bond snapped the first time they met, and Rhysand's father did not give his mother the freedom to decide what to do, even after he had saved her.
Elain is the only one among the sisters who knew about the bond firsthand. She knows that whatever she is feeling towards Lucien is a result of that bond. It's interesting to note that both Elain and Lucien, who spent most of their lives suppressing their needs and settling in their environments, have similar experiences. Lucien was severely punished for making waves, whereas Elain grew up with two sisters with big personalities who had no issues rocking the boat. Consequently, Elain does what she can to avoid being a problem. This is where the conflict of the bond comes in - Elain was engaged to someone she loved despite the short amount of time to be told “well, actually, your soulmate is this person. That person who told you that they love you actually hates you because of what you are now.”
This is also the first scenario where Elain actually gets to tell someone what to do. She isn't trying to argue against or support someone. For the first time, Lucien is giving her autonomy for the decision and the space to make it.
I personally believe that SJM was so confident in her match between Elain and Lucien that she mated them almost instantly, pulling back any further conversation beyond their initial discussion. In ACOSF, Cassian and Nesta primarily think of them as a package deal because whenever Elain does something, there's usually a comment about where Lucien is or isn't. It's also extremely telling that their only interaction in the book is with Lucien still looking at her with longing, while Elain acts the opposite towards the only person she cannot hide her real emotions from.
If Elain wouldn't reject the bond in someone else's book, including the novella that includes multiple people, then we should also be asking why Elain would act a certain way towards Lucien, except for the one thing that will absolutely cement that we know she doesn't like him.
It's been two years since it was revealed that Elain and Lucien are mates. The reason why she resisted this long deserves more than a hundred pages (roughly part one) of her book.

You’re seriously going to take drawing requests from A Court of Thought?!? Someone who routinely lies, gaslights, bullies, and blocks Elriels? You were truly one of my fave people on this platform but watching you pander to Eluciens…whew, the respect I’ve lost.
Hello anon. I seem to have upset another one of you.
First and foremost, I am going to draw whatever I want and I'm not going to apologize to you. Let me just get that out in the air.
And for now, we are just going to ignore how you seem entitled to me, my art, my free time, and what I decide to do so we can quickly address your concern here.
I want to preface this by saying I sat on this ask for hours because I was genuinely so confused where this came from. I literally had no idea what you were referring to. I thought ‘A Court of Thought’ was you trying to criticize me for taking art prompts for A Court of Thorns and Roses and that you were saying I do all those things you mention. Which, as you can imagine, made me very sad.
But it finally dawned on me (after one of my friends pointed it out to me) that you were referring to the comment I replied to from the blog ACourtofThought.
After that realization, your comment started to make sense… for the most part.
Now, I have never once spoken to or even heard of this person before they commented on one of my posts. I know absolutely nothing about them. I’ve never even seen one of their posts. But if what you say is true, then you should know there is no possible way I could have even heard of them before, as I have a long list of anti tags blocked and have a strict no negativity policy on all my blogs. If you knew me at all, or if I was one of your favorite people on this platform, as you claim, then you should know that about me at the very least. I make it very very clear I do not deal with that kind of negativity.
And you know, not everyone in this fandom chooses to surround themselves with negativity. I hope you free yourself from this, truly.
I am not upset that you talked down to me, hurt my feelings, and insulted me. No, I’m mostly upset about the fact that you immediately jumped to the worst conclusions about me. The fact is I simply replied to a nice comment I saw on a post I made. That’s it. You saw that and thought “Wow, this woman is siding with this person I really dislike. And she obviously knows exactly who this person is and why I dislike them so much. So how dare she!”
…That is what you thought, am I wrong?
This is unwarranted and out of context. I am not “pandering” to Eluciens. I was simply asking my very kind mutuals, who happen to like that ship, if they had any prompts they wanted me to draw. And I tagged Elucien in that post so it reached other people. I have so many nice and genuine friends on here who ship all kinds of things, and I want to create something that makes them happy too. Is that a crime?
What if I told you I’m the exact same person I’ve always been? What if I told you that all the while I’ve been one of your “favorite people on this platform,” I’ve been doodling Elucien for some of my longest friends. Would you still have had any respect for me left to lose if you knew that all along?
I won’t talk about the ships here. If you want to know about that, go see my response to the other ask I answered yesterday.
When I first saw this ask, I’ll admit it upset me very much. So much so that I couldn’t get anything done for most of the day because I was so sad that someone would say something like this to me. But I’ve had a whole day to think about this, and I’ve come to one conclusion: I really don’t think you had much respect for me to begin with if you are so quick to turn around and talk down to me and insult me after I seemingly did something to offend you.
And if I did offend you, you could have easily just unfollowed me and moved on. But… you chose to go out of your way to insult me. Why?
I am sorry you are stuck in a place where you feel like you have to assume the worst of people. I’m sorry you have found yourself surrounded with so much negativity in this fandom. Fandom is a place for people to come together because they enjoy something, and I am truly sorry you’ve fallen into the part of the fandom that doesn’t comprehend that.
I’ll never begin to understand why people can’t see that kindness is so much easier. But at least I have a lovely circle of friends on here I can fall back on. Friends who have different opinions, who ship different things, or like other stuff. Friends who are in a completely different circle, but are the kindest, most compassionate people I’ve ever met.
Anon, I truly wish for you to find that for yourself. Try surrounding yourself with kind people who like different things. You will be so much happier. Trust me. There are so many nice people out there once you step outside your own circle.

I don’t get why people say elains book is safe the next ? Sjm said she will write for all sisters but she never said they will come out right after the other? And for why she didn’t said yes immediately after asked if we know elains love interest and said it would be lucien, well why would she? What author already tells people what is going to happen in their book before it even comes out?
Its not obvious to me that elain will be next because in the last acotar book their was more of azriel and gwyn then elain?
Nesta and cassian had a bonas chapter and they got their book, azriel has a bonas with both elain and gwyn but who in their right mind still thinks az an elain are “soulmates” after that bonus chapter. The whole time i got the ick while reading how he behaved will elain it was just fuckboh behavior. Rhys is his brother i think id azriel would be sooo in love with elain he would find a way for them? But azriel couldn’t even say anything, he didn’t think about a future with her, just where he pleasures himself to the thought of her and who does that? Fuckboys who don’t want a future with someone sorry but i wouldn’t want to date someone who thinks like that about me.
Sorry for rambling but i just had to get that of my chest 😂😂
Elain hasn't been set up enough to have the next book , I am not sure what popular stuff people are on these days but it must be potent in order to come to that hallucination but its really ok , it's not the worst assumption or theory out there. People can assume whatever they want and have fun while it lasts .
Personally I believe it will be Azriel's book. I often have people trying to pull me into debates but its just obvious its silly to argue about it.
Also, I do condemn Azriels thoughts on Elain in the bonus , it's never ok to treat anyone like an object you feel entitled to. It's still beyond me how someone can read that bonus and think it's romantic, reading badly written books and inexperience in life would explain it though. Clearly they both barely know each other and its not love . As an Azriel stan I would like Az to find that epic , intense , all consuming love that doesn't need to be hidden , for a guy that was locked away as a child for 11 years like some dirty secret it would just not make sense that he has to be a part of " forbidden romance " its just cruel.
Also, I think this fandom takes it too far with the "Fuckboy" image of Az , he is desparate and lonely , he also has a whole lot of unresolved trauma that has left him feeling rejected all his life, Elain lead him on , made her interest obvious so he would obviously think it was worth a shot. I don't think Az even knows what a healthy relationship looks like and Elain clearly has her own set of issues she is dealing with , they are at the best each others rebound.
What makes Az look worse is the fact that SJM changed from a Moriel endgame in ACOMAF which compromises the way the characters look in ACOWAR and I mean both Az and Mor. I am hoping after his book some of that will be amended.
Azriel is a grey character but he certainly is a lot more interesting compared to some other characters from the series who often seem very one dimensional and lack complexity and depth and seriously lack appeal . I truly believe Azriels story will the most intriguing, complex and satisfying journeys and I look forward to it .
And as for the whole Elain book or Az book? As long as people realise it's one OR the other who cares ? We will eventually get both the Gwynriel and Elucien book 🤗

Are you just doing Elucien prompts? Because I had this idea for Nessian where canon Nesta craves physical affection from Cassian but doesn’t really know what to do with it when he is affectionate with her because she’s never had anyone touch her tenderly like he does
nope, I’m taking any and everyone as the mood strikes me! I hope you don't mind that this is a modern au; I really liked this idea but writing in canon isn't my preferred thing to do. tw for discussion of prior abuse (tomas + mama archeron can suck it).
Nesta knew Cassian had noticed the way she didn’t know what to do with herself whenever he wanted to touch her. He was just so giving with his affection, from the easy way he would sling an arm around her shoulders to the kisses he liked to press to her skin whenever he felt she needed one.
Part of her wanted to lean into those touches, to make things easy the way they seemed to be for him, but a much larger part of her didn't know how to trust hands that were reaching for her. She was so used to being hurt instead of being held that her body just didn't know what to do when it was presented with the second option.
"I'm sorry," Nesta said for what felt like the millionth time after it happened. She'd been washing their dishes from dinner when Cassian had come up from behind her to wrap his arms around her, sending her into a stiff panic before she forced herself to calm down. "Fuck, I'm sorry."
They'd been dating for long enough that Nesta hated it was even an issue. They spent endless time in each other's apartments, saw each other multiple times a week, had met each other's friends and chosen families. She knew Cassian would never hurt her, would never even want to, but it was hard to fight every instinct in her body telling her she was in danger when it had kept her alive for so long.
"You don't have anything to apologize for, sweetheart," Cassian replied. He slowly unwrapped his arms from around her so he wouldn't startle her further and took a few steps to the right. "I'm the one who should be apologizing."
"What?" she responded, completely flabbergasted. She turned off the water and turned to face him so they could have what was shaping up to be an important conversation without any distractions. "You're not the one who's fucked up."
"Nesta." He gave her a look that told her exactly what he thought of that statement. "What happened to you was fucked up. That doesn't mean you're fucked up."
"But I am fucked up."
"We're all a little bit fucked up. Doesn't mean I still don't owe you an apology."
"What do you think you owe me one for?" Nesta asked, a little resigned. Her boyfriend was even more stubborn than she was on the best of days, so sometimes it was easier to just give in rather than fight a ridiculous fight, especially for something they'd talked to death so many times before.
"I know you don't like me coming up to you like that, so I'm the one who owes you an apology," Cassian answered. "I'm sorry for scaring you."
"It's not that you scared me," she told him honestly. Having conversations like these made her insides crawl, but since they were already talking, she thought she might as well rip the entire band-aid off anyways. "I like it when you touch me, I just... need some more warning, is all."
"Okay," he easily agreed. "I'll try to remember that for the future. Okay?"
"Okay," she mumbled. She turned around and started messing with the dishes again just to give herself something to do, not sure where to go from here.
"Is it okay if I give you a hug now?" Cassian asked after a few moments passed.
"Yes," Nesta answered. She took a deep breath and let it go just as his arms slowly circled back around her, letting herself relax as much as she could into the warmth of his embrace. It was much better now that she knew it was coming, and she found herself able to enjoy the feeling of his warm body behind her instead of immediately going into fight-or-flight mode.
"Better?" he murmured, squeezing her gently.
"Better," she repeated.

ANGST ONELINER PROMPTS FOUND { HERE } Send an ask with a number
Summary :: A conversation between Feyre and Elain doesn't go as planned.
Pairing :: SQUINT Elucien
Word Count :: 1k
Authors Note :: It's been so long since you requested! BUT I have been trying to figure out the right way to write this. I'm sorry you waited forever! But here we go!
Tumblr media
“You aren’t who he would have chosen as a mate.”
Before the words had even fully sunk in, Elain had turned her head to her younger sister, only to see shock, mixed with frustration on her face. It wasn’t until the words, and their meaning, settled into her mind, that she fought, and failed, the urge to flinch back.
“That didn’t come out the way I meant for it to.” Feyre spoke up again, fully aware of how her original statement affected Elain, even though she wished it wouldn’t have.
Elain, proving to be more stubborn than either her sisters remembered, especially surrounding this topic, simply turned her head, and looked away. She hoped to give the impression that she did not care, nor did she wish to discuss him.
He was visiting, of course. Elains sisters only ever brought up the subject whenever he was around, but not near.
“He thought he had a mate, but the bond never snapped into place.” Feyre spoke, as though Elains dismissal of the topic had not happened.
Closing her eyes, she fought against the surge of jealousy that reared its ugly head. It was not hers, it did not belong to her. The emotion came from that thin golden thread that came from the deepest part of her being, and connected her to the red haired male. The emotion, though she knew what it was, and why it was there, was foreign.
“They loved each other so deeply, they genuinely believed they were mates.” Elains younger sister continued. She continued, ignoring, or just not knowing, the jealousy growing.
Elain hated it. She had no right to react this way. She did not wish to react this way. Yet here she was, jealous enough anyone who did not know the situation, might think that she had not ignored that thread.
“Clearly, they are not.” Elain clipped back. Her words, sharper, her tone, harder than she had planned. She hadn’t intended to respond at all, yet she could not help it.
“No. They aren’t.” Feyre responded, seeming to finally get a sense of where Elains mind was at. “It didn’t stop him from believing she was, even in the centuries after her death.”
Elain, as much as she loved to believe she was great at controlling her reactions, when it came to the golden thread, or him, she had a hard time keeping any reaction to herself, especially when she could not control it.
There was a small flicker of relief at learning this unknown female that he loved so much, had wanted to be his, had wanted the golden thread to tie him too instead, had no longer been alive. She couldn’t help it. She desperately hoped her face remained neutral. What kind of person had any sort of glee learning someone had died, no matter how long ago?
But there was one thing Elain could not figure out. This was not her sister's story to tell. She knew why her sister was telling her. Elain wouldn’t speak to him. But it still wasn’t Feyre’s story to tell.
Beyond that though, Elain was curious.
“Of all the times to tell me, why now?” Though she asked, she refused to look at her sister. Asking the question may have been too much, letting her sister think she was giving too much interest in him. Turning her gaze to her sister wouldn’t help Elain.
“I thought you should know, you aren’t the only one who found yourself in this bond, having had hope for a past love.” Feyre responded.
It was the first time anyone had mentioned, even though indirectly, Greyson, at all since the war. What he had done, had said to her.
He was the reason Elain had started ignoring the heartbeat she could still hear. Greysons cruel words, and the harsh way he spoke to her was the reason Elain would not look within herself, knowing she would only see the golden thread. The way Greyson had broken her heart was the reason Elain refused to look at the male with the red hair.
Refusing to listen to her sister any longer, Elain stood, and walked out of the room, without another word.
She was tired of everyone expecting her to do something about her situation. She couldn’t even try to distract herself, like Nesta could, without this situation ruining it.
Maybe she hadn’t done anything because maybe she may want to be happy like her sisters one day. But that day kept getting pushed further, the more her sisters brought up the topic like she should take pity on him.
Elain hadn’t realised where she was walking, hadn’t caught the flash of red through the window, hadn’t heard his laugh as she turned the corner. She wasn’t expecting anyone to be here.
Yet, when Elain had entered the town house, thinking she might be free of the entirety of him, she ended up face to face with him, barely registering his human friends.
He still had the laughter in his eyes, though it was quickly dying, as he realized that it was Elain who stood in front of him.
Elain couldn’t help the longing, the pain, the sadness upon seeing how quickly his laughter and joy died. She did that to him. And this was the worst part of this bond. The guilt, seeing his expression fall, anytime he saw her.
Though, now, her mind had something new to supply, seeing the fallen joy. Even though her sister hadn’t meant it in a way to be painful, her words came back, which added more uncontrolled, and unwanted pain in Elains chest.
‘You aren’t who he would have chosen as a mate.’
Without saying a word, Elain turned on her heel, and walked back out the front door, completely forgetting why she had come to the town house to begin with.
The only thing on her mind was how Lucien Vanserra’s face always fell, whenever she came into the room, and how it was probably because she wasn’t who he wanted.

I’m fairly new to the acotar fandom. Read all the books in January, and am curious as to Elain and Lucien pairing. So he’s her mate, but they’ve never had any interaction with each other until she was forcibly turned into Fae. It’s also been stated in the book that mated pairs are not always the right choice and the bond can be rejected. So why shouldn’t she reject the bond?
Hello! I hope your time in the fandom thus far has been enjoyable. Use that block button liberally though, that's my advice to you lol
This is an interesting question and it’s related to something I’ve been thinking about lately. However, imo the fandom, or some people in the fandom, are approaching this question in the wrong way. So my short answer is:
The real question we should be asking is why will Elain accept it? Because by making Elain and Lucien mates, sjm has already told us they are endgame.
You could stop reading there and get the gist of this whole post, but my longer answer explains why that’s the real question. I'm actually going to put the rest under the cut since it got long. Also to make it harder for the people I've blocked but still stalk me to read my post *finger guns*
Sjm uses the mating bond to tell us which couples were always meant to be together and will be endgame. Any time we learn about a mating bond with main characters, everything clicks into place and we know that that’s it. That’s that, it’s endgame, no more questions or messing around. That’s how the fandom viewed elucien from the moment that acomaf came out. It was a moment of “oh, that’s where she’s going, sounds good then!” It wasn’t until much later that some people got into their feelings about Mor and Lucien and Elain and Az and decided they’d prefer something different. But what a reader wants and what the writer intends are two different things, and because she made Elain and Lucien mates, it’s clear what she intends.
I've made a post about why it's important that the bond can be rejected, which is here, but the tl;dr is that if you know it can be rejected, then the characters still have some semblance of choice and it also creates much needed tension - in every romance novel, you know who is getting together, you just don't know how they will overcome their obstacles. For Elain and Lucien, the mating bond actually serves as an obstacle to their relationship that they have to figure out how to deal with. It's creating a lot of tension for them, which sjm said they will experience.
The thing I’ve been thinking about lately is which came first, the chicken or the egg, where the ship is the chicken and the mating bond is the egg. I think we can answer this one, though. Given the number of mates she writes and the fact that her characters go through multiple relationships before they get there, the ship comes first. She has even said that she when she writes, she decides what relationships are going to happen, and then she figures out how to get there.

So that’s where the mating bond comes in. Sarah decides on the ship first, before anything to do with the world or plot, and the mating bond is one of the tools to get them there. The mating bond is honestly just incidental.
It's not that Sarah decides to make characters mates and then decides if they will stay together. She makes them mates because they will stay together.
Could this change? Sure. Do we have every single main character pairing being mated to make us feel pretty confident that this will remain the case? Yeah. I think it's also important to note that every example we have of an awkward or wrong mating bond is with extremely minor characters (save one example in hosab which is clearly, clearly being painted as a horrible shitty thing, and nothing like what Elain and Lucien are experiencing now, but even then it's side characters).
When sjm told us in acomaf that Elain and Lucien are mates, she was telling us that they are endgame. It’s as simple as that and she’s not a subtle writer. After that happened, she talked about them as a couple at book events because she was like “hey they all know, cat's out of the bag! Clearly I intend for them to be together so I can talk about it.” (I tried to find my post with all the screenshots but the tumblr search function SUCKS. If anyone else can find it I will love you forever.) Here is one post with a screenshot thank you @the-lonelybarricade!
Okay here is the post that has the best breakdown of what sjm has said re: Lucien, Elain, and being mates
I think it’s an interesting conversation to have, why would or should someone reject or accept a mating bond, hypothetically. But in reality, this is how sjm works. So maybe the question of why Elain should reject or accept the bond is an interesting one to ponder, but you don’t see those conversations about nessian and feysand (or rowaelin, or quinlar, or Kallias and Viviane, or anyone else) because we know what the mating bond means. So to me, those questions are interesting in the context of looking at the mating bond as a trope, as it's used by many many authors, but we already know what it means when sjm uses it. On a related note, here is a post with all the ways that characters think/speak about the mating bond in acotar. It's clearly a positive thing, and sjm has no intentions of writing it in a way that would lessen its importance, because that would then lessen the magic of when Feyre finds out about Rhys, and when Nesta struggles to accept that she has one with Cassian.
I think it's interesting to note that any time a character wonders if they have a mating bond, or expects to find out about it any day, they are wrong. Feyre wondered when hers and Tamlin's would show up, Rhys tells us that Az had been waiting for one with Mor, apparently now he's wondering that re: Elain, Lucien was waiting for his with Jesminda, and in ToG Aelin wonders if she has one with Chaol, or had one with Sam. None of those turned out well, though. (thank you @fracturedarkness and @highqueenmorrigan for helping me remember who did this. <3)
To your question though, I do think it would be an interesting thing to explore if Elain did reject the bond, or if Lucien did, and then what their relationship would be like afterwards. Lucien is still Feyre's friend and working with the Night Court. Elain is still living in the NC. It's not as if they would never see each other again, but they will always have the bond between them, even if they officially reject it. It'd be interesting to see how their relationship (platonic, romantic, whatever) developed without the pressure that the mating bond presents, but as it is, the mating bond is creating that tension for them. Which is tension that sjm said they will have in the freaking screenshots I can't find.
For me, them being mated is just a sign from the author that they are supposed to be endgame, and then the rest of it is us trying to figure out how that is going to happen, what it will look like.
Okay sorry this got really long, and tbh it doesn't need to be because I think that sjm is very clear in her intentions and we all know this, which is why you don't see people questioning the other mating bonds in the series, and why you see people trying to explain that canon facts are actually a huge conspiracy theory.

Elain paced the patio until she’d worn the lapis lazuli tiles to near dust. Just behind her, Lucien clicked his teeth with exasperation.
“Just read the godsdamned letter, Elain,” Lucien ordered, his patience running thin. She didn’t turn to look at him, unappreciative of his tone. She knew what she’d find, besides. Lucien without a shirt, lounging in that white cloth draped around his hips with nothing beneath. She was so dangerously close to seeing his cock before they were married, which she was trying to avoid. Despite all his innuendo, Lucien had done nothing outside of kissing her in that pool of blood.
And making her sit in his lap each morning. His little trophy of war, though he’d never said it. He didn’t need to say so—Elain understood why he kept her spread out the way he did. Let everyone see how virile, how masculine and dominant he was. She was merely a pawn. Lady of Day, sure, but a pawn, too. Her beauty was a decoration he could put on display whenever he liked.
Elain peeled the black wax seal from the letter with a long nail. She ignored the silver dusted mountain insignia, well aware this came from Feyre. Azriel would have returned, shadowless and injured, with the news she was being held by Lucien.
Willing. She could almost taste how Azriel would whisper that word. Elain swallowed the rising amusement that felt too cruel to acknowledge even to herself. The horror Feyre would have felt, the shock and surprise on the High Lord’s face.
Elain?
Surely not.
Surely.
Elain didn’t want to know what her sisters made of it. Turning, she let her eyes rake over the broad, muscular chest attached to Lucien’s beautiful, smug face. He held out one of his large hands and she gave him the letter.
“Cowardly,” he taunted her, unfolding the letter with open amusement. He cleared his throat, and then with a voice pitched comically high, began to read the letter.
“Elain,
I cannot begin to the describe the horror of the last few days. From learning you were gone to finding out you helped trap Azriel in the Day Palace, I am just beside myself with hurt and anger. Neither of you had any right to attack a member of our court, let alone what you’ve actually done to him.
And to flaunt it so brazenly with your sham wedding, well…I thought you were better than that. I would like an audience with your High Lord. After everything I’ve done for him, he owes me. I didn’t write him directly given how he refuses to be mature about our disagreements, but he has officially taken matters too far.
I expect a response before the end of the week. Given I doubt the sincerity of your wedding, it shouldn’t be much trouble.
Feyre.”
Lucien chortled as Elain ripped the paper from his hand, unable to believe the tone of Ferye’s letter.
“There is no way,” Elain breathed, scanning the words.
“I’m impressed it wasn’t written in crayon,” Lucien replied. “I wonder if Rhys taught her some new words for this. Brazen seems a little advanced for Feyre.”
Elain ignored Lucien’s digs, outraged by Feyre’s demands. “She thinks we should drop everything and what? Apologize? He had no right to be here—”
“Ah, but that's where you’re wrong,” Lucien murmured, rising from his chair. “Rhysand believes his presence in the other six territories should go unquestioned. Our treaty is very clear on what happens to traitors and spies. I wouldn’t expect Feyre to know, of course, given I doubt she can do simple multiplication. She ought to be grateful Azriel returned with his head.”
“I wish you would have taken his wings,” she said. Lucien’s calloused hands skimmed over the sides of her arms.
“In time, Elain,” he offered, sliding his nose through her hair. Elain pushed away, frustrated Lucien had chosen that moment to make his arousal known. She was right across the hall from him—all he had to do was walk ten paces and he could have her.
“I’m not meeting with her.”
“She has no right to demand it of you,” Lucien agreed with a  shrug of his broad, naked shoulders. “Would you like me to correct her grammar and send the letter back?”
Elain paused, eyes lighting on his face. “Is that what you’ve been doing?”
Lucien laughed. “Just because Rhys wanted an illiterate wife to rule his territory doesn’t mean I have to respect his decision. I like to think she’s learning something—every time she sends a new letter, her penmanship is a little better, at least.”
It was so deliciously cruel. Elain knew it should abhor her to know how petty Lucien could be. Perhaps there was no length Rhys could stoop to that Lucien wouldn’t meet. Elain took a step towards him, pressing her hand to his chest.
“That’s so cruel, Lucien,” she murmured. He reached for that hand, bringing her palm to his mouth.
“I can smell your arousal, Elain.”
He pulled her closer, until her body was flush against his own. Eyes made of flesh and metal searched her face, waiting to see what she’d do. Would she rebuff him? Rebuke the male he was and retreat? Elain didn’t think Lucien would let her go even if she asked.
Not that she would. The threat between them hummed with approval, pulled taut from their shared need.
“They made me apologize to Feyre for those years when we were mortal,” Elain whispered, thinking of that first meal with Rhysand. Afterwards, Nesta had quietly cried in the room just beside Elain’s. Humiliated by creatures far older than them, that seemed to enjoy watching them squirm and suffer. Cassian had never given Nesta a moment’s reprieve. He’d decided he’d have her—but not as she was.
As he wanted her.
“How did that make you feel, Elain?” he asked, cupping her face. Lucien forced her to meet his gaze, his thumb rubbing over her lips.
“Feyre hunted. No one asked her to do that…and no one asked how all that meat was cooked. Who cleaned her clothes, her sheets, their cabin. Who chopped wood, Lucien? Who sewed the patches in the clothes she wore? Who made soap, or fetched the water for bathing? She’s invented this reality where the only thing that mattered was the carcasses she dumped on the table, that what she provided was the only worthy contribution, and Nesta and I need to apologize that she was forced to do it at all.”
Elain’s chest heaved, not from desire, but her long pent-up anger. “She didn’t even notice us. Feyre never cared that Nesta sewed up her clothes every time there was a tear—without being asked, without demanding praise. She never commented on how we always had soap and where or how we got those supplies. Just complained how we spent her money. Poor, long-suffering Feyre. She made herself a martyr without ever consulting the rest of us, and then demanded we atone for it.”
Lucien stroked her cheek. “That’s certainly not the story I was told.”
“Of course it wasn’t!” Elain shrieked, furious with Feyre and her manipulative family history. “Because she didn’t value anything we did. It was all just a given! Like Nesta and I were supposed to be her mother, were supposed to read her mind! We fell into poverty at eleven, tell me why Feyre never learned to read! We had a governess from the time we were toddling about, but Feyre couldn’t be bothered. She was somehow both above us—better than us—-while also victimized by us. It’s unfair that only her pain counts. Nesta and I suffered, too. I always thought, before Rhysand came, that we were in that cabin together. That we didn’t have much, but we had each other.”
“Don’t blame yourself,” Lucien reassured her softly. “He poisoned her mind long before she came to see you again.”
“I think she was always like this,” Elain whispered, pressing her cheek against his chest. “I want Nesta back. She was mine first.”
“We could try,” he offered, kissing the top of her head. “But if she accepted her bond…”
Elain’s own unaccepted bond threatened to drive her mad some days. She couldn’t leave him and she knew it. Call it a cruel trick of fate, but Elain wanted Lucien beyond reason. She could excuse anything he might do—had already enjoyed what she’d seen thus far.
Nesta, too, would be lost under that same spell. Cassian would never betray Rhys, and Nesta would never betray Cassian. It was unfair. Nesta had been her sister first. It was Feyre who was the interloper, the intruder—even their mother had noticed.
“We have to focus on us—our court,” Lucien finished, peeling her off his body. “Which means letting your sisters go. Can you do that, Elain?”
She didn’t know. Still, Elain nodded yes all the same, if only so he wouldn’t threaten to send her back.
“Good girl,” he praised, kissing her cheek. “Do you want me to respond to Feyre on your behalf?”
It was cowardly to agree to that, and yet Elain nodded again. What would she even say? When Feyre could ignore every wrongdoing or worse, twist it until she believed she was in the right? How did Elain begin to argue that? Azriel would have his shadows had he not intruded in their palace. Surely Rhysand must have known.
Lucien, seemingly reading her mind, caught her by the wrist before she could scamper off. “If we had truly done something wrong, we would have the might of the Illyrian Army bearing down on our doorstep. Feyre is merely playing on what she perceives to be your weakness.”
“Which is what, exactly?”
“Your goodness,” Lucien breathed, lowering his mouth. “Which she assumes is all there is to you.”
“She doesn’t know anything about me,” Elain replied, wishing he’d kiss her. It was hardly the right moment for it, and still she wanted to taste him, if only a little.
“Nobody does,” Lucien agreed. She wasn’t given a chance to tell him he didn’t, either. His mouth slanted over her own, effectively silencing what would have been an argument between them.
Lucien assumed he knew everything because they were mates. That his wants were her wants. His feelings were her feelings. He wasn’t wrong, at least at that moment. He wanted to kiss her and she wanted that, too. Elain slid her hands up the broad, muscular planes of his chest, tangling her fingers in his long, auburn hair. Lucien moaned softly, gripping her tight against him. It was Lucien who deepened the kiss—his tongue slid over the seam of her lips, demanding entrance. Elain opened for him, losing herself to the onslaught of sensation. His lips were soft, but firm. When his tongue stroked over her own, she swore she could feel it between her legs.
She didn’t mean to bite his bottom lip. Standing on her tiptoes so she could reach him made the kiss a balancing act, and when the sole of her sandal slipped, her teeth sliced into his bottom lips.
Lucien growled as blood flooded the kiss, gripping her hair tightly. He liked it, she realized. Like that tinge of violence.
“Go,” he panted, grinding his cock into her hip all the same. “Before I fuck you here and now.”
“Lucien—”
“Go,” he ordered, magic lacing his words. She had to obey, had to pull herself off him when all she wanted was to please him. Heat flooded between her legs, her arousal so potent she could scent it, too.
She did as she was told, ignoring the urge to tell him that maybe she wanted that. No one spoke to her that way, and hearing Lucien so dismissively objectify her was almost thrilling. Offensive.
But thrilling, all the same. She was a real person to him and not some fragile object best housed behind glass for display. Beautiful to look at, but never to touch.
Elain had the sense he would not be gentle. That he would bruise her skin, would leave imprints of his teeth, would fill her mouth with blood and stain the sheets of her bed so irrevocably the only thing to do in the aftermath would be to burn them.
Elain wanted Lucien to so thoroughly debauch and defile her that the very thought of letting her walk back into the prudish Night Court made everyone sick to their stomach. That when they averted their eyes, cast down to the floor, it was not because they found her too lovely, but too terrifying.
Their separation was odious. Elain could barely stand it and when it came time to meet him in the throne room, she all but tripped over the hem of her white dress, pulling the deep slit between her breasts wide open for everyone to see. The gown itself was merely one carefully folded piece of cloth, tied together with a rather lovely gold belt. Easy to remove if Lucien wanted to.
He reclined on his throne, legs spread suggestively. Head resting against his hand, the other beckoning lazily as he ignored the salty musk of arousal in the air.
These little parties always devolved into raucous orgies she was not allowed to participate in. Only watch from the safety of his lap while his rigid cock nestled against the small of her back.
Tonight would be different.
“What are you thinking, pretty wife?” Lucien asked when she reached him. He slid his hand over her waist, fingers brushing the bottom of her breasts. “You look like you’re plotting.”
“I’m not your wife,” Elain replied primly. She regretted the upcoming, drawn-out affair. Elain could see the wisdom in Feyre and Nesta’s quick ceremonies, even if she appreciated Lucien giving her something she’d always coveted as a human.
An actual, honest-to-goodness wedding.
“You are my wife,” Lucien replied, lips against her neck. One of his fingers idled over her knee, teasing towards her thigh. “You have been since you fell out of that cursed Cauldron.”
“I always knew you were crazy,” she replied, reclining against the solid musculature of his chest. A laugh rumbled through him.
“And yet here you are. In my lap. Reeking of arousal.”
“Untouched, still,” Elain dared to remind him. A growl slipped from Lucien’s throat, his fingers slipping beneath one of the pleats of her dress to rub against her bare skin.
“Are you asking me to touch you?” he asked. She’d forgotten his court was still in the early throes of partying—everyone was still dressed, still touching politely.
Or, as politely as anyone ever was in Day Court.
Elain slid her hand behind her, running it over his bare thigh. Her fingers met the cloth draped around his waist, and instead of pushing it to the side, she merely gripped him over the fabric. With one teasing stroke, Elain offered up a bored gaze to the courtiers beneath the dais she was perched on.
And shrugged.
She had no road map for teasing a man—and certainly not a male. What she knew came from the near-pornographic books she’d found in the library and what she’d seen in Rhysand’s Court of Nightmares. Elain was hoping unchecked confidence would take her most of the way, and Lucien would pick up the rest. She stroked again, the angle awkward. Lucien shifted, spreading his legs further until she was practically straddling one of his nearly naked thighs. She knew he could feel she was wearing nothing beneath the dress, and when he rubbed, her own wet arousal stamped over his skin.
His teeth tugged against her ear. “You’re making a mess of me, Elain.”
Could he tell how nervous she was? Whatever remained of her humanity was mortified, was screaming with shame—close your fucking legs. Elain could have snapped her knees together and sat primly, could have pretended she’d never touched the thick length of him—that she didn’t know how big he was.
Elain arched her neck, looking upwards at the vaulted gold of the ceiling. Lucien’s fingers passed higher and higher over her thigh, stroking her just as absently as she was touching him. Elain knew he was hardly unaffected. His heart pounded violently against his chest, drowning out the sensual music playing around them.
No one looked directly at their High Lord, and yet Elain was certain everyone was watching. Egging them on. While they writhed and touched and tasted, Lucien had remained utterly unmoved. Elain wondered how often he’d descended into the fray before she arrived, losing himself to the pleasure of his court. And, perhaps just as wicked, she wondered what it would be like to climb out of his lap and pick her favorites. To invite them into her bed, to see what the other immortals had experienced without an ounce of guilt.
“What happens when I become your wife?” Elain asked, thinking of how possessive her own sister's mates were.
His finger dragged up the soaking-wet center of her without warning. Elain twisted, squeezing the base of his cock without thinking. Lucien inhaled not from pain, but obvious pleasure.
“I’ll start calling you Elain Spell-Cleaver,” he replied rather flippantly, rubbing over her cunt with idle, soft touches. Her thighs fell open of their own accord, stripping her of the last vestiges of her whatever modesty she clung to. Elain’s gaze turned to the corner of the open room, where two females were currently kissing against a large, carved pillar. They wanted to be watched.
So did she.
“Will you lock me away?” she asked him, releasing her awkward hold on his cock so she could readjust herself into his hand. Head lolling over his shoulder, Elain could look up at him from this angle. Could incline her head and drag her tongue over the hollow of his throat.
“Lock you away…breed you mercilessly until I double Beron’s record…parade you about only when it suits me…” Each statement was more absurd than the last. Elain bit against his collarbone hard enough to leave an imprint of her teeth and Lucien groaned.
“I do intend to breed you, but as for the rest…” His fingers threaded through her hair, jerking hard enough that her throat was exposed to his lips. “You’re my wife, not my pet and if you want to play at court, all you have to do is ask.”
Lucien teased at her entrance, circling the sensitive skin without ever penetrating. He knew what she wanted instinctively and Elain wondered if it was because mates were evenly matched. He knew what she wanted because he wanted it, too. She arched upwards, trying so hard to get him to plunge into her, to fuck her with his hands.
Lucien slid up to her clit, back to teasing the nub with the soft, slick pads of his fingers.
“If I fuck you, I’ll be too tempted to put food in your hands,” he whispered, teeth scraping over her skin. “But cauldron boil me, you’re so wet. I’ll bet you’re tight, too.”
She whimpered.
“I’ll make you a deal, Elain. I’ll do something for you and you’ll do something for me.”
“Yes,” she agreed, not caring he could have demanded anything. He chuckled, removing his hand from between her legs entirely. Elain watched as he brought them to his lips, sucking them slowly until they were entirely clean.
“Just as I thought. Sweet.”
He slipped his arm beneath her knees, setting her on the throne as he stood. The outline of his straining cock was almost comical. Elain was afraid he was going to make her watch someone service him, that she’d be trapped on that throne while Lucien had his fun, returning only when she was a quivering, miserable mess.
He slid to his knees before her, his back to his court. Golden crown atop his head, Lucien made a mockery of the pageantry of the High Lord. Placing his large hands on her knees, Lucien slowly spread them obscenely, pushing aside the fabric of her dress so she was entirely exposed to him—and anyone else who cared to look.
“Messy,” he praised, his one russet eye drowning in lust. “Someone has to clean you up.”
Elain moaned when he lowered his mouth against her, his tongue lapping at her arousal like he was some kind of untrained, feral animal. Maybe he was—that first taste certainly seemed to undo him. Lucien’s fingers dug into her thighs, holding her open and keeping himself anchored in place.
She should have told him no. She certainly shouldn’t have grabbed at his head, threading her fingers through his hair to keep him where he was. Nothing in her entire life could have prepared her for how divine his tongue felt against her sensitive flesh—how softly he’d circle over her clit, drawing maddening shapes until she was writhing against his face.
Lucien pressed one of his fingers against her, teasing her with the possibility of being fucked, all while licking and sucking. She was desperate, was wiggling in an attempt to force him into her just so she’d have something to grip. Elain wanted—needed—to be filled.
He plunged two of his fingers into her body without warning. She screamed, forgetting where she was or that she had an audience. Elain rolled against him, meeting him thrust for vicious thrust. It wasn’t enough, would never been enough. Release danced up her spine, pooling in her gut and when he pushed that third long finger into her, it was enough to send Elain spiraling over the edge. His lips sucked around her clit, tongue teasing as she came in an explosion of dancing golden light. He didn’t stop when she came down, still pumping, still licking, until she was sobbing and sensitive. It was too much.
Elain pushed at his head, but Lucien didn’t budge, dragging her back up over the edge before letting her freefall over. Pleasure was edged with pain, a bittersweet sort of bliss. One she prayed he freed her from when she came back to herself, boneless and shaking on that throne.
Lucien lips came off her with a loud, sucking pop. Red lips glistened from her arousal, and when he drew forth sticky fingers coated in her orgasm, it was her mouth he pressed them into, making her taste her own release.
“Your turn,” Lucien murmured, rising to his feet. She knew it was coming, and still felt nervous at the thought of kneeling between his legs and pleasuring him. He replaced her on that throne, legs spread while Elain shakily arranged herself between his knees.
“Have you done this before?” he asked, noting the way she hesitated.
“No,” she admitted, still hazy from the pleasure he’d pulled from her. A flash of what might have been regret streaked over his features. She didn’t want his pity. Elain pushed aside the bolt of fabric that kept Lucien from exposing himself to the world, freeing the thick, swollen cock she’d felt the last few nights. It was nothing like Graysen’s, which seemed almost polite—cute, even, when compared to the heavy appendage bobbing in her hand.
“We can take this to my bedroom—”
“How hard can it be?” Elain interrupted, drawing a steadying breath. She understood the mechanics of what he was asking her. Put him in her mouth, suck, and try not to vomit in his lap. If he could get on his knees and eat her out, she could certainly repay the favor. Besides, the bargain between them tugged, demanding she uphold her end.
Elain licked the underside of his cock, letting herself taste the bead of fluid pooling over the tip of his cock. Lucien shuddered, throwing his head back when he felt her tongue swirl against him. Elain watched him closely, drinking in the way he panted when she took only the head of him in between her lips. There was no way to take him all—she wasn’t practiced enough to even try.
Not that Lucien seemed to care at all. Elain kept one hand braced on his thigh, delighting in how rigid the muscles were just beneath his skin when she made a fluid, wet pass over his cock.
It was obscene, pulling her mouth off his so he could watch a rope of saliva connect the pair of them. She held his gaze, moving in near slow motion just to see what he’d do. She braced herself for him to grab her by the back of the head and force her back on him, to punish her with the throbbing cock standing erect between them.
Chest heaving, Lucien gripped the arms of the throne he sat on. He looked wild.
“Elain,” he panted, his knuckles white with the effort it took to keep him rooted in place. “Elain please.”
A thrill shot down her spine. Was the High Lord begging her? She licked the underside of his cock and Lucien whimpered, eyes all but burning a hole through her. She could hear his thoughts.
More, give me more—
She sucked as much of him into her throat as she could, gagging when there was no more give. Lucien’s hips flew off the throne, pushing further and robbing her of any ability to breathe. It was pain all over again, and Elain liked it. No one else would have dared at all. Elain wondered if it had ever occurred to Lucien that he shouldn’t fuck her throat—that he ought to be kind and gentle with her.
He was her mate. He liked to be fucked rough, and just assumed because he liked it, she must too. After all, what kind of cruel goddess would pair him with someone who didn’t?
He was right, though Elain lacked experience to know the finer aspects of it. She knew she liked the careless way he gathered up her hair and held her face still, how his hips pumped into her until tears streamed down her cheeks.
“Fuck me, Elain,” he gasped, thumbs swiping the moisture from her skin. “Look at my pretty mate and her pretty mouth. You suck me so well. Gods, you suck like you were made to do nothing else.”
She couldn’t respond, though she did try and widen her jaw to take more of him. She was rewarded by another loud groan. Lucien’s back arched, his legs bracketing her against his body. He was trembling and she understood why—thrusting viciously, Elain gagged as his salty release poured itself hot and fast straight down her throat. She couldn’t swallow it all, still choking on his cock. His come dribbled over her chin and down her neck, marking her as his.
Lucien withdrew himself, pulling her back into his lap for a messy, claiming kiss. She knew he could taste his own release on her lips, on her tongue, and was aroused all over again at the realization that he liked it.
He swept her up, still kissing her like a frantic madman. The noise of the room slipped back into the bubble around them, bringing with it the unmistakable scent of sex. She didn’t care enough to look, was too lost in the kiss, in the jostling of her aching body against his own.
“After the frenzy, I want you to pick your favorite female to bring to our bed,” Lucien gasped, pushing through the throne room doors.
“What if I want a male?” she challenged.
“Bring him, too,” he said against her lips. His steps were hurried—rushed. She wondered if he’d abandoned his plan to have sex with her. If they’d forget their political plans and give in to instinct instead. Rationally, she knew it was a terrible plan.
And still, when Lucien dropped her atop his bed and shed himself of the last of his clothing, revealing himself in all his naked, bronzed glory, Elain wished he would. She was quick to do the same, laying herself out for his ravenous gaze.
She realized far too late that what Lucien really wanted was just to touch her. Pulling back the blanket and nestling her against his chest, Lucien ran his fingers up and down her bare spine with unguarded reverence. She didn’t realize how badly she’d needed that until it was just them between those silken sheets, far removed from the world around them.
She felt the mask he wore slip. Lips against her shoulder, he whispered, “I’ve been thinking about this for years. Since I first saw you.”
“What? Holding me?” she asked, brushing strands of hair off his face. She wondered who had. If anyone had ever touched him outside of sexual gratification. He was so beautiful, so lovely it made her ache.
Maybe she wasn’t the only one treated like a breakable object better left behind glass. Something to admire, too pretty to mar with oil slicked fingers. She inched forward, pressing a soft kiss to his mouth.
“Yes,” he admitted, eyes fluttering shut. “But more than that. Not just being held, but wanting to be. Wanting me.”
There were a million good, reasonable reasons to ally with Lucien. He could give her everything she wanted. Her feelings, outside of her common sense, were impeded by their bond. She couldn’t think straight for wanting him. Giving in had helped clear some of that way, if only for a little while. She knew it would all come rushing back in the morning, that she’d be back to panting over him like an animal in heat.
He traced her lip with the pad of his thumb. “I’d choose you, too,” he whispered as if he knew she needed to hear it. Elain kissed him again, nuzzling her face into the crook of his neck. Lucien’s arms tightened around her body, holding her like she’d evaporate into the air if he didn’t.
“I know,” she said, mouth against his skin. “So would I.”
And at that moment, lost in the glittering dark, nothing she’d said had ever been quite so true. Elain held him, too,
“So would I.”

"Elain doesn't want Lucien which is alright because it's clear he'll end up with Vassa. He deserves to be someone's first choice!"
Why Vassa though?
Has she done anything to deserve Lucien's love? Everything she's done for him (like offering him a place to stay) she's also done for Jurian.
Has she gone out of her way to make him feel wanted as more than a friend? That he's her choice?
Has it been shown that she's taken an interest in what is going on in his life? His trauma?
Has she made her romantic interest in him known?
The big argument against Elucien is that it's clear Elain does not have romantic interest in him but where is the of evidence of Vassa having any? When she spends her time bickering with Jurian? Why is anyone convinced Lucien wants Vassa or Vassa wants Lucien when Silver Flames proves there is not a single thing hinting at endgame potential between them.
Lucien longs for Elain. He makes up 50% of their ship.
There is no debate about what he feels for her versus the feelings Az has for Elain. Longing > Lust. It's been proven in every single SJM endgame couple, every time a MMC longed for their mate.
Right now we don't really know how Elain feels about Lucien. Either she truly wants nothing to do with him or she's afraid of the effect he has on her and she's scared of what it would mean to give into those feelings. Both are still a possibility and if someone can't admit that they're lying to themselves.
We also don't truly know what Elain feels for Az because again, lust does not equal love. Part of the fandom is convinced Elain has real feelings for Az but where is the proof of that? She gets gifts for everyone so that can't be it. Has she gone out of her way to spend time with Az? To get him to open up? Has she ever even asked for his help in an attempt to spend time with him?
There is no evidence that Vassa is remotely attracted to Lucien or thinks of him as more than a friend. The only person in this ship war that we know with absolute certainty feels something more than lust for another character is Lucien for Elain.
Vassa's feelings for Lucien are unknown.
Elain having real feelings for Az is unproven.
Az having real feelings for Elain is highly debated in the fandom "certainly not beyond the fantasies he pleasured himself to" and not something one of his closest friends believed.
The percentages are in favor of Elucien because when you really break it down, Lucien is the only character who has shown devotion.
Vassa has shown no devotion towards Lucien. I assume they're friends but we're not even shown real hints of that in SF.
Az has not shown devotion to Elain. Not when he is still jealous over Mor and can't admit to her cousin that he's over her. And Elain hasn't shown devotion to either Az or Lucien. Especially not Az. If she knows the scent of her bond bothers Az yet she still hasn't rejected it, it's evident his feelings don't matter all that much to her. Actually, that she hasn't rejected her bond seems to indicate some devotion to Lucien.
And if the argument is that we'll see the progression in their own book which would be a confirmation that those things don't currently exist, than surely that means all Elucien progression leading to an Elucien endgame could also happen in their book as well.

Elain hummed quietly to herself as she placed the finishing touches on her newest bouquet. It was a beautiful one. A special one. To give to someone special.
She bit her lip with a smile as she stepped back a moment later and admired it again. It was a beautiful mix of red roses, red and white carnations, red tulips, and primrose.
It would match his hair perfectly.
Giggling a little to herself, Elain quickly wrapped it up carefully then cleaned her workspace and bundled up. The weather had gotten significantly colder and though her walk wouldn’t be too far, Elain didn’t want to reach there half frozen.
“I’ll be back in about an hour or so!” she hollered to her assistant manager. “I’m not too far, so text me if anything!”
She and Lucien were supposed to have lunch together at a restaurant nearby today but he was stuck in the office and couldn’t take the time to leave so instead, she would be taking the lunch to him.
Lucien.
Her boyfriend.
Her boyfriend.
Elain remembered when she had first met him as he had barged in demanding ‘fuck you’ flowers that so happened to be delivered to Nesta. To this day, Elain was thankful Nesta had forgotten to ask what the flowers meant.
Since then, the two had been dating for three months and it still felt unreal to her. Whatever Elain had felt with Graysen before this, was nothing compared to how Lucien made her feel. He was kind, sweet, so understanding, and made her laugh until she was crying. He made her feel alive and loved and half the time Elain felt like she was soaring in the skies with him. Lucien courted her like a proper lady and she relished every moment of it.
The two were so cheesy it made everyone around them want to vomit. According to Feyre that is, and most definitely according to Nesta who gagged on principal in their presence.
Elain giggled again as she balanced the bouquet in one hand and made her way to pick up their to-go meal and then very nearly skipped the rest of the way to Inkwell Corp., the literary agency where both Lucien and Nesta worked.
Nesta.
Gods, she hated Lucien now even more than she had prior to them dating. Granted, Lucien also pushed Nesta’s buttons every chance he got but it definitely didn’t help that the hate between them had begun long ago.
But they tried to get along. Tried for Elain’s sake.
Elain stepped through the doors of the company and made her way to the front desk, a wide smile on her face.
“Hey Vassa.” she spoke. “I’m going to pop in and see Lucien for a bit.”
“Hello Elain!” Vassa replied with a chuckle. “Bringing him some of those beautiful flowers of yours?”
“Well, the flowers are a part of it. But I’m the main event.” Elain replied with a grin and Vassa laughed.
“Alright, head up on. I’m assuming Nesta shouldn’t know just yet?”
“Please and thank you.” Elain replied with a chuckle and Vassa gave her a wink as Elain headed off to the elevator, up to the second floor, office 170C, and found Lucien’s door slightly ajar. She watched him for a moment as he leaned back into his chair, a manuscript in one hand and the other hand tapping mindlessly on the desk.
Elain cleared her throat then knocked. “Special delivery for a Mr. Lucien Vanserra. Your beautiful girlfriend has arrived.”
Lucien looked up and his face broke out into a wide smile. “Elain!” He tossed the manuscript down and shot out of his seat, crossing the room faster than she could comprehend and pulled her in, caging her against the closed and now locked door.
She laughed as he cupped her face and kissed her enthusiastically. “This better be because you’re excited to see me and not just for the food.”
“I’m looking at a full-course meal right now.” he replied with a grin and Elain giggled, lightly shoving him back.
“You’re too much, you know that?” she said, shaking her head and heading to his desk, placing their food down, and then turning to him with the flowers. “I made you a bouquet. Beautiful and full of feelings.”
“It is beautiful, as is the lovely lady who put it together.” he said with a wink and a peck on her cheek. “Hopefully the feelings aren’t of loathing though.” he teased, taking them from her and placing them on the corner of his desk, the spot he always reserved for her flowers, next to his favorite framed photo of them. He admired the flowers with a soft smile trying to think of a time when flowers didn’t play such a significant part in his life.
“Definitely not. It’s full of another feeling that starts with the letter L.” she said with a smile, a flush blooming on her cheeks and Lucien turned to her with a sly smile.
“Oh, Elain. Is this what a bouquet full of lust looks like?” he said and she scoffed. “What am I going to do about your lustful ways, dove? If you want to ravish me, you don’t need flowers to tell me, I’m ready whenever you are.”
She choked back a laugh before shoving him again and Lucien started laughing. “That’s rich coming from you considering your lustful ways are barely contained.” she replied, her cheeks still heated. His lustful ways had found their way into her bed last night and then the night before that and the night before that for the past month.
The grin on his face suggested his train of thought had followed hers.
“I can’t help it. You’re so damn beautiful.” he mumbled, pulling her more comfortably in his arms now that flowers and food weren’t in the way and kissed her temple.
“So who will protect me from your lustful ways then?” Elain asked with a grin, looking up at him and Lucien chuckled, his lips finding their way to her neck, leaving soft kisses.
“Based on all the noises you make when my lustful ways make an appearance, you don’t seem to mind.”
Elain held back a moan and shuddered when he lightly bit down on the sweet spot of her neck and she immediately pushed away from him with a warning look that had him grinning widely.
“Don’t. This is a professional setting.”
“So? I’ve had a lot of time to think about all the professional things we could do in my office, Elain.”
She loved when he said her name like that. Like he couldn’t get enough.
Elain tried to hold back a smile but failed, blushing furiously and giggling as he pulled her into his arms again, pushing her against his desk. “Lucien...we should sit down and eat before the food gets cold.”
“I’m hungry for something else.”
“Lucien.” she warned but his hands had slid down and under her mini dress, his fingers gliding over her thighs and squeezing. He normally didn’t mind tights but at this specific moment, he really hated them. “You’re — someone will hear —.”
“I love you.” Lucien mumbled, pecking her lips gently. “So much.”
She smiled, her arms coming around his waist, pulling him closer. “I love you too.” she mumbled against his lips. “And just for the record, that was the L word I was going for.”
Lucien chuckled. “What do the flowers mean?”
“Well...red roses symbolize passionate devotion between two lovers.” she began with a coy smile and he smirked.
“Oh yeah?”
“Mm, red carnations symbolizes deep love, while the white ones represent undying devotion.” she continued.
“Aw dove, you’re so devoted to me.”
“Shut up or I have another bouquet that starts with the letter L I can whip right up.” she said, poking his chest and he laughed.
“Okay, okay. What about the tulips?”
“Red tulips usually represent undying love, that your love has no limits.”
“You are clearly very obsessed with me.”
She swatted him gently while he grinned before finishing her explanation. “And primrose usually stands for the innocence of young love. Though the innocence part is clearly lost on you.”
Lucien snorted and planted another soft kiss on her lips then leaned back. “Don’t try to deny your lustful ways, miss. I know you want me.”
“Mm, that’s right I do. But right now, I would like to eat much more.” she said with a laugh and Lucien squinted playfully.
“I can give you something much more filling.”
“Will you stop?”
“Never.”
He leaned down to kiss her once more but sharp pounding on the door made them both freeze.
“Open the door, you filthy cockroach. I need to see how far you’ve gotten along on the manuscript.”  Nesta’s voice called out and Lucien let his head fall back with a groan as Elain started giggling.
“She ruins everything.” he muttered.
“Be nice.”
“She’s never nice to me!” he replied and attempted a pout that had Elain rolling her eyes. She leaned up and kissed him once more but gently pushed him back.
“You’re both horrible to each other. No pouting changes that.”
“I can hear you mumbling to yourself in there! Open the damn door, you weasel.”
Elain stifled a laugh as she moved around Lucien but he gently grabbed her arm and gestured with his chin towards the desk.
“This would be the perfect moment to fulfill my office sex fantasy.” he whispered.
“With Nesta outside the door?” she whispered back with an amused look.
“That’s exactly why it’s perfect.”
“Lucien!” Elain chided with a laugh. “She’ll kill you. And you’ll get fired. In that order.”
“Worth it.” he replied with a wiggle of his eyebrows and she giggled again.
“Vanserra, if you don’t open this damn door.” Nesta’s muffled voice called out again.
“I’m coming!” he hollered annoyed and Elain snorted.
“You wish you were.”
He squinted at her again then flicked her nose. “You would be too if you’d let us get down to business on my desk.”
Elain rolled her eyes as she rubbed her nose and then smiled coyly. Lucien raised a brow at her expression but she only grinned widely. Her hands shot up to his hair and she immediately started gently messing it up before moving to his shirt and rumpling it slightly then unbuckling his belt. Lucien blinked, momentarily dumbstruck as Elain moved to her own hair, shaking it out to give it a messier look and pulled out a lipstick from her purse, reapplying it, then promptly pulling Lucien down to place kiss marks all over his lips, jawline, and neck.
She pulled back with a look of triumph on her face. “Now, you can go open the door.”
He blinked again then shot her a wicked smile. “...And she thinks I’m the one who negatively influences you.”
“What she doesn’t know, won’t hurt her.”
Lucien snorted. “Yeah, but it’s going to hurt me.”
When Lucien finally opened the door, Nesta had stood fuming, ready to launch into a verbal attack that would have likely torn him to shreds but stopped dead when she saw his face. She gaped at him in shock for a few seconds as she took in his lipstick-marked face and half opened shirt and unbuckled belt, before her eyes flickered to a smiling Elain, causally fixing her dress with a very visible hickey on her neck.
“Nesta! We were just about to have lunch. Come join us.”
Nesta looked at her sister up and down, mortified. “Elain!” she stuttered. “How could you — this asshole — you — I think not.” she finally choked out, her eyes flickering back to Lucien attempting to fix himself.
“What’s wrong?” Elain asked, blinking innocently.
“In his office?” Nesta snapped.
“Maybe. Problem?”
“How could you?!” Nesta snarled. “You know this is one of my worst nightmares!”
“At least you didn’t catch us fucking in your living room!” Elain snapped and Nesta’s cheeks flushed.
“...That was an accident.”
“You two were naked! How do you accidentally get naked and fuck?”
A pause then Nesta quietly said, “You weren’t supposed to be home.”
“I wasn’t supposed to be home at my apartment?” Elain huffed. “You guys left evidence everywhere! After I yell at you to make yourselves decent I catch you again in the bathroom!”
“It’s quicker to shower together.”
“And the kitchen? You know the kitchen is a sacred space, Nesta! I bake there!”
Lucien’s eyes darted back and forth between the sisters, confused but very, very amused.
“This is not happening.” Nesta said shaking her head and holding out her palm as if blocking this whole incident from her mind. ”No. I — you — no.”
“The carpet matches the drapes, Nesta.” Elain smirked as Nesta visually gagged.
“My carpets?” Lucien blinked.
“Shut up!” Nesta hissed at him and he backed away from her with a glare.
“Don’t tell him to shut up or I swear I will share all the details of our sex life with you.”
“Stop.” Nesta demanded, glaring at her younger sister. “I would rather die.”
“Dicked down, Nesta.” Elain said slowly. “I get dicked down by Lucien a wholeeee lot.”
“No. No. Not in my work space.”
“Right on his desk, Nesta!”
“Enough! I’m sorry god damn it, Elain.”
Elain’s lip twitched as her sister promptly turned on her heels and stormed out of the office muttering darkly to herself and Lucien slowly shut the door behind her.
It took a moment for the situation to fully sink in and when the two looked at each other, they burst out laughing.
When they finally sat down to eat after making themselves decent, Lucien spoke. “Care to enlighten me on why you chose to traumatize her today?” he asked with a soft laugh. “Had I known you were planning to, I could’ve pitched in.”
Elain shrugged then grinned at him.
“I caught her and Cassian having sex all over my apartment while I was at work the other day.” Elain replied and Lucien’s eyes widened. “Apparently their apartment was too far away and they didn’t think I would mind.”
Lucien burst out laughing when she rolled her eyes then the laugh died in his throat as his expression turned into mild disgust. “We have sex all over your apartment.”
“Don’t worry. I made her and Cassian scrub it spotless as punishment. I even supervised.” she said with another grin and he laughed again.  “I saw way more of Cassian than I ever needed to see that day so this isn’t anything compared to that. At least you’re decent.”
“Not morally, no.”
“Clothes, Lucien. You’re actually wearing them.”
Lucien smirked. “I can quickly rectify that.”
Elain threw a napkin at him and laughed. “Not here!”
“Oh, so you can talk the talk but can’t walk the walk, huh?” he asked, grinning.
“I never said never, did I?” she replied with an innocent smile. “Maybe I just need a little persuasion.”
“I can definitely help with that.” Lucien replied with a smirk then blinked. “I have an idea.”
Elain quirked a brow. “I’m listening.”
“Hear me out,” he began, putting a hand up. “They violated your apartment, right?”
“Right.” she said slowly, twirling her spoon.
“Well. It only seems fair that we go and have sex all over their apartment. You know...return the favor.”
Elain paused and met his eyes as he gave her an innocent smile.
“Return the favor, you say?” she asked and Lucien’s smile quickly went from innocent to wicked as she grinned at him.
“We can even take your bouquet full of love and sprinkle the petals every place we ruin. Give them a trail to follow.”
“Now that sounds like a very promising idea.”
