The Secret Other Thing: KILL
This is my eighth post in a series I’ll be making on how to increase biodiversity on a budget! I’m not an expert--just an enthusiast--but I hope something you find here helps!
Tumblr media
KILL, TEAR, RIP, MAIM.
You may have seen this sentiment a few times on gardening and wildlife blogs and been incredibly confused. Isn’t killing things the opposite of what you should be doing to protect habitats? In some cases, it really is necessary!
Invasive Plants
Invasive plants can do more harm than good, taking up space and nutrients and providing little in return to local wildlife--while spreading and choking out the native plants that would provide the most to our native fauna. Learn how to identify invasive species in your area and how to properly dispose of them, and do so whenever you have the opportunity! You may even be able to find volunteer groups/events where you can join up with like-minded people to remove a specific plant from an area.
Tumblr media
(This image refers to the United States specifically--these plants aren't invasive or native everywhere!)
Pro tip, though; if you take out an invasive species and leave empty soil where it was, it’s likely another quick-growing invasive species will just move in. We don’t want that! Try to plant something in its place! If you’re going out on a mission to take out invasive plants, try to keep some native flower seeds or seedlings on your person while you do this work.
Different plants are invasive in different places, so be sure that the plant you're targeting is actually invasive to where you are. You don’t want to rip out a beneficial plant because it’s invasive somewhere else! Social media sites like Instagram and Tumblr are great for spreading information about invasive plants, but they can often be a bit… US-centric. Even I'm guilty of this, plenty of times! Plants like garlic mustard, kudzu, butterfly bush, Amur honeysuckle, wild radish, and Japanese knotweed are high-profile invasive plants that I hear about all the time here in America--but they came from somewhere, and are a part of the environment in these places! Likewise, many plants that are branded as pollinator-friendly and biodiversity boosters here in the states can be awful invasive species elsewhere. Even plants and animals that aren’t invasive in one part of a country or continent can be detrimental in another--Canadian waterweed is native to North America, but it’s actually invasive in Alaska.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) vs Coral honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens) vs the yellow variety of Coral honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens))
Be sure you’re taking out the right plant--be very confident in your ID before you take any action! Amur honeysuckle and Japanese honeysuckle, for example, may be invasive in the US--but coral and northern bush honeysuckles are native and key species in their environments. You don’t want to do harm while trying to do good--double check your IDs. Being certain with your IDs can also prevent you from doing harm to yourself and others--some plants produce toxic smoke when burned. Stay well-read on how to dispose of the invasive plants you’re targeting.
Tumblr media
(Garlic mustard pesto! Can't say I've ever had it, but I've heard good things about it online!)
With that being said! Some invasive species can be eaten. It’s free food! And you’re helping the environment? Win-win! Try looking up recipes that use these plants, or see how you can substitute something else for them! Foraging guides and blogs would likely be extremely helpful for this.
A super easy way to help curb the spread of invasive plants is to not grow them yourself! Double check any plant you’re considering buying or growing from seed--some sold in stores like butterfly bush are often touted as great plants to add to a pollinator garden, but in reality are an invasive species that eagerly displaces native shrubs here in the states.
Tumblr media
POV: you're working the garden center at the Blue Big Box Store, you care about the environment, and every day you watch people buy Butterfly Bush and can do jack shit about it asides from try to gently steer them towards something else (but the other next best option was also Invasive Tropical Milkweed because its easier for Big Box Store to sell) I have a personal vendetta against people who grow Butterfly Bush (I live in The States) (If you didn't know Butterfly Bush was invasive in the US before now you're valid but also please god consider replacing it with an alternative ASAP)
Invasive Animals
Tumblr media
POV 30 to 50 feral hogs are running into your yard within 3-5 minutes while your small children play
Invasive animals and insects compete for resources, take over habitat, and can even spread disease--all while pushing native species out or dwindling their numbers. Keep track of invasive animals you see and report them. Depending on the severity of the situation, killing them can be necessary and even encouraged. Do be sure it’s an invasive species and not a look-alike. If you’re unsure, take pictures, do research, and take action the next time.
Some high-profile invasive species in the US are spotted lanternflies, cuban tree frogs, hammerhead worms, feral swine, zebra mussels, lionfish, asian carp, burmese python, and others. Again, do make sure you’re targeting species that are invasive in your area; I doubt Asian carp are considered invasive in Asia, for example. Similarly, the American bullfrog is native to the eastern US and Canada, but is quickly becoming an invasive species around the rest of the world. Not to mention, the racoon problem in Japan…
Tumblr media
Some invasive species can be eaten as well! Some of them taste awful, and some can even be dangerous to eat or handle without caution. I would do a good amount of research online before trying to cook up just anything.
Doing it Right
If you’re trying to handle invasive species, you do have to ensure you’re doing it properly. As you do your research, you’ll likely see if the species should be photographed and reported and to what channels. Also in some cases, going about destroying them incorrectly could unintentionally help them spread--some plants spread quickly through rhizomes into disturbed soil, and hammerhead worms can actually regenerate from pieces into fully-developed new worms when you try to cut them up. Some invasive species are even actively harmful to humans, so I cannot emphasize enough that you need to be sure about what you’re dealing with and be careful about it. Giant Hogweed, for example, has toxic sap that’ll cause severe skin inflammation and painful blisters if it contacts skin and is exposed to sunlight. The blisters last for months, and the skin may develop long-term sensitivity for sunlight.
If you’re unsure about how to handle an invasive plant, or are unsure of it’s identity, try contacting your local university co-op extension service if you’re in the states. They can tell you how to remove it safely and effectively. I can't say for sure what other channels would be the best option for someone living outside the states, so if anyone knows, feel free to chime in!
Pets
Tumblr media
POV: ur little outdoor kitty Firestar is destroying the balance of your local ecosystem plz keep him INSIDE
Please keep your pets inside, or at least on a leash. An outdoor cat can do a lot more damage than one might imagine, as well as unrestrained dogs.
That’s the end of this post! And... technically, the last post in the series! My next and final final post is gonna be basically a giant list of all my sources that I used to make this post! I hope this post series was informative, helpful, interesting--anything of value, really! Feel free to reply with any questions, your success stories, or anything you think I may have forgotten to add in!

"Souls tend to come back to people who feel like home," He told her. "I am powerless without you by my side."
1,431 words.
┗━•❃°•°❀°•°❃•━┛
"I'm back, Lilia."
Walking through the door of Diasomnia's dining area, (Y/n) saw everyone was there, eating breakfast. Lilia perked up at hearing his name being called, peering back at her.
"My, you're here earlier that I assumed."
He said, though his fangy smile was nothing less but friendly. (Y/n) rubbed her arms slightly, though it wasn't cold. she shied away, and despite all the eyes on her, it was only because of one pair.
Such a beautiful shade of green.
"Yeah.. It um... opened again." A few students looked at each other, confused before Lilia stood up, a bit more quickly this time and nodded. "I see, well come, follow me little one. Let's get you in clean bandages."
This didn't fail to catch Malleus' attention, and he watched (Y/n) follow after Lilia, before standing up himself too follow after, lagging a bit. Malleus came into the door while Lilia was cleaning the cuts, "What happened?" He asked, in a silent demand.
"She just got hurt is all."
Lilia said, seemingly being able to just wave him off. (Y/n) looked towards the dragon fae as he walked closer to the bed, twitching away when the sting of the disinfectant. Noticing this, Lilia leaned down, blowing on the gash. "I used to do this for Silver all the time." He stated, seemingly reminiscing.
Though, (Y/n's) eyes never left Malleus. Finally, she breathed out a soft question, taking the fae's by surprise.
"What.. Are you?" Her eyes widened in realization, 'That must have sounded rude.' A flush warmed her cheeks, "I- It wasn't supposed to sound rude.. Where I come from we don't exactly have magic or.. Uh people with horns and fangs walking around. Sorry."
A deep chuckle rumbled from Malleus' chest. "Not at all. Allow me to feed your curiosity, child of man." He stated, with a slight smile that showed off his teeth. "I am fae, one belonging to the Dragon Fae species." He stated, watching her mouth fall open.
He would have mistaken it as fear, had Lilia not move out of the way, a bit startled as (Y/n) suddenly sat up.
"Really?"
She asked, almost excited in a way. "Yes." Malleus answered.
"Do you have wings or a tail? Can you breathe fire?" Malleus watched the female gasp suddenly, his eyebrows raised in slight surprise. "Can you turn into a dragon!?"
Her question came off as more of a excited bark, and Malleus chuckled, watching her face flush again as she dropped back down on the bed. "My my, excited are we?" Lilia piped up.
"Yeah.. I used to love dragons when I was a kid. Obviously I haven't lost my love of them." She answered, flustered by her outburst before hand. "Everything had to be about dragons." (Y/n) laughed. "Birthday cakes, toys, movies, posters, antiques. It was all about dragons. This one time my dad.."
Lilia looked up as she cut herself off from her little ramble, her face twisted with the pain of grief.
"You miss them, don't you?" Lilia said, watching as (Y/n) snapped out of her little haze. She smiled, "Yeah. A lot. My dad was really good at wood carving. He used to make me these little wooden trinkets that were supposed to be dragons and wyverns and all sorts of things."
"My, he sounds quite good at that."
"He was."
She smiled up at them, eyes twinkling in refreshment as Lilia finally finished taping on the gauze.
"He really was."
-
"Come here, I have something to show you." (Y/n) was hoisted up onto her father's hip still holding onto the doll she had gotten from her Aunt Marcy earlier that day.
She smiled eagerly, and her father smiled back, walking them out to the old shack he used to do wood carving. She saw his tools as they walked past but couldn't remember any of their names. Just her father's warnings about them.
"Make sure you never ever touch them, okay (Y/n)?"
He would warn her, "They're very sharp. They could cut your nose right off." He reached out pinching and wiggling her nose with a soft smile, making her giggle.
His expression turned serious, and he stepped back, letting go of her nose. "I'm serious. It can cut off your nose. Okay?"
"Okay, papa." She looked up at her father, and he smiled, picking her off the ground. "Now let's go, I wouldn't want it to steal your nose!" His smile was back, and so was hers.
"So, what do you think?" He held out his newest creation towards her small hands, making her drop  her toy doll she liked to call Bella on the wood chip covered floor, grabbing onto the wooden dragon.
The dragon had a pink painted on belly with light red wings, and she hugged it to her chest, squealing. "I love it Daddy!"
He would smile, off into space for a moment before kneeling down and placing a hand on her unruly hair.
"And I love you. Happy birthday, (Y/n)."
-
Someone snapped their fingers in her face a few times, calling out her name. (Y/n) jumped, startled out of her trance and looked over to see Riddle, looking over at her, a both annoyed and worried look on his face. They were in history class now, her last period before lunch break.
"Sorry. I zoned out, didn't I?"
Riddle sighed, looking back at the board to see if he needed to take any notes. "You did." He said, finally. "Has everything been okay? You've been spacing out a lot more often lately."
(Y/n) smiled over at him, nodding her head. "I'm fine."
"Gotta say, I haveta agree with Riddle on this one." Epel spoke up from the other side of her, setting down his pencil as professor Trein continued his lecture in the front of class.
"Ya been actin' weirdly lately. N'yesturday ya passed out in Proffessor Crewels class. Ya sure you're okay?"
"I'm fine." She repeated, "I've just been thinking of home a lot more lately."
Admitting this, as the bell rang Riddle stood up, placing a hand on your shoulder.
"I can't assure Crowley can find you a way home, though just know if you ever need anything, Heartslabyul is open to lend you an ear."
A smile brightened her face, and (Y/n) nodded. "Thanks, Riddle. That means a lot more than you probably think it does."
He gave a small smile and nodded, heading out the door. Gathering up the rest of her materials, she walked out to her locker and shoved them away, before heading to the cafeteria to eat. They were serving some interesting dishes today, though she'd settled on a chicken sandwich with a side of corn and a yogurt cup.
Peering throug the drinks, (Y/n) picked up a drink and walked over to the lunch table where Ace, Deuce, and Grim where already waiting. Grim was already almost done with his food and Deuce smiled as (Y/n) sat down and eagerly bit into her sandwich.
"Hungry today?"
"Yeah. I skipped breakfast."
(Y/n) said, with a full mouth, continuing to eat with a happy look on her face. Ace and Deuce shared a look as she swatted away Grim's paw that was outstretching towards her plate.
"Sorry, not today, Grim."
(Y/n) half-heartedly mumbled, opening the lid to her drink and taking a sip of it to wash down the sandwich she'd eaten.
"Soooo... (N/n), you said your dads name was Drerek, right?"
Ace started off, making her look up at him in slight confusion, half paused at taking a bite of her chicken sandwich. She pulled back, setting her sandwich down an smacking Grims hand when it tried to grab it without blinking.
"Yes, why?"
She inquired, in slight confusion.
"So then... Why is Derek (L/n) in the history textbook in the 1900's section?"
Ace and Deuce shared a look with each other again as (Y/n) started at them, in bewilderment. Her jaw tightened, and she pursed her lips. "If this is your attempt at a sick joke then-"
"We're not joking." They cut her off at the same time, and Deuce fished out a textbook from his bag. "You remember the page number?" Ace asked, peeking over his shoulder. "Yeah. it's 671." Deuce responded, flipping through it until he came to a page with an underlined name.
He pushed the textbook towards (Y/n), and she looked down at it, heart jumping in shock.
"What..?"

Hi! I hope you’re doing well. I was wondering if you could help me out? I know your primary interest is birds, and also that you’re from Florida, but you seem rather knowledgeable about all sorts of wild animals so I thought I might as well ask.
A relative of mine has been seeing a very large (4-5 feet long, maybe slightly longer) snake about once a year for the past 3-4 years, and none of us have a clue what it is. Said relative lives in Ohio, and my attempts to search “large snakes in Ohio” just lead to questionable exotic pets and searches for native snakes was bringing up smaller snakes that didn’t seem to fit the bill. My best guess was some kind of rats snake but it’s just a vague guess.
Here’s a pic for reference:
Tumblr media
I’m also curious about the snake’s behavior. The family has a dog, and one of the adults is unemployed, so they’re outside often, yet they only see the snake once, maybe twice a year. Additionally, they live in a well-off suburban neighborhood, with little “wild” space, so I’m curious where the snake is living and what it might be eating. (Chipmunks??? Is it the reason they don’t have rats?) is this species native to the area? Or is it invasive?
Do you have any insight on any of this? No worries if you don’t, I just thought I might ask as my googling hasn’t been very successful, and I saw you post about snakes a couple of times.
Thanks for taking the time to answer, and I hope you have a lovely day/night! :)
Now that is one healthy looking snake! I believe the species that your relative has spotted here is indeed a gray ratsnake (Pantherophis spiloides). This species is native in Ohio and they can grow to be pretty large. Ratsnakes are wonderful to have around and as their name implies they make for fantastic pest control. Your relatives might have this friend to thank for keeping the numbers of rats and mice around their property to a minimum.
Snakes can be a bit more shy and elusive than some other animals, so it doesn’t surprise me they don’t see this individual too often. Rat snakes adapt to life around humans fairly well and aside from rodents they’re also happy to eat birds and eggs, as well as small lizards and amphibians. It’s in great body condition though so you can be sure this guy is eating good! If you or your neighbors happen to have a chicken coop, make sure not to use fake eggs as these can be lethal to snakes.
Thanks for sharing your snake! I really like this species (and all ratsnakes) and you have a really lovely specimen here. Wishing him many years of prowling for rats as your friendly neighborhood pest control.

@toothpastecanyon proposed the idea of a post-apocalypse dragon Mizar, and it was too good to resist! May I present;
MIZAR THE MIGHTY!!!!!
Tumblr media
Info and more versions below the cut!
Her name Mezra (might be changed later)
She hoards glitter
Lives in an abandoned “Michelles” (in-universe-Michaels”)
Sleeps in the yarn section
Sleeps with a few glitter bottles, they spill a lot
Keeps the feast of her hoard in a different section
Friendly
Always has glitter in her scales (she likes it)
Sometimes has yarn tangled in her horns
She paints her claws (all of them) with the gold acrylic paint
Those scale patterns under her eyes are natural
Her spikes are a little bit uneven (like in the headshot)
Literally leaves a trail of glitter when she drags her tail
She does not sleep like in the picture, she rolls constantly, which is how she gets so much glitter on her
Deep sleeper
Lonely :( all the humans are scared of her
Daydreams a lot
Likes exploring areas close to home (like forests, or deep caves with lots of space)
Loves the way her scales glint in the sun, but prefers night flying because she can see the lights of the human (and other) villages. She would say hi, but she knows they would probably attack her.
Loves cloud-gazing, and flying through fog
Very excited to meet Alcor, they get along great, and she’s happy to have a friend. He wingmans (?) for her when she’s trying to befriend villages
Alcor often uses a dragon form around her (like 50/50) because I headcannon that he will tweak his appearance if a Mizar is a different species, or just looks drastically different.
Mezra loves his humanoid form, because she can pick him up and make fun of him
Her favorite food are the goats that hang around a few minutes flight from the Michelles
Because she’s a dragon, and hasn’t had much socialization, she has a lot less reservations about killing people.
It’s more of a “I think we’re gonna have to kill this guy, Mezra” “Aw man” situation.
Notes on the current era:
The apocalypse happened around 12,000 years after the transcendence.
The apocalypse was caused by a magic storm, which wiped out a TON of humanity (and other sapient species), throwing the survivors into a medieval-esque era. ( think Wizard of Lanata, I love that fic btw)
Because of the magic storm, almost all man-made settlements (towns, cities, buildings, anything really) were destroyed, except for very few patches here and there there, which is how the Michelles still exists.
Mezra hatched around 200 years post apocalypse
Alcor is in a silly crazy cycle, so there’s not really much angst despite him being really old.
More versions:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mezra’s personality is still a work in progress, but she’s basically the embodiment of my ADHD. She has similar traits of Mabel, but different behaviors.

So on dendryte's suggestion, I read a paper called "Feed your friends: do plant exudates shape the root microbiome?", and it is awesome and filled with ideas that were new to me, and all in all was very exciting. Like, I didn't even know about/remember border cells, and they apparently do a whole lot! I'm back from work now, so now I'm going to share the Questions I have, and am going to spend the weekend looking for sources on:
1. As crop rotation was developed for a tilled, monoculture system as a way to address the disease issues that pop up in such a system, is crop rotation actually beneficial in a no-till, truly polyculture setting where care is taken to support mycorrhizae?
As we know know that plants alter the population of bacteria in the soil, and that these population compositions differ between plant species, is it possible that there might be some benefits to planting the same crop in the same location if you're not disrupting microbe populations through tilling?
2. Since we know that applications of nitrogen can cause plants to kick out their symbiotic fungal partners, increasing their vulnerability to pathogenic fungi & drought, might it be better to place fertilizer outside of the root zone so as to force the plant to use the mycelium to get at it?
How far can mycorrhizal networks transport mineral nutrients? Are they capable of transporting all the mineral nutrients plants need? In other words, can I make a compost pile in the middle of the garden and be lazy and depend on the fungal network to distribute the goods?
3. How deep can fungal hyphe go? In other words, in areas with shallow wells, and thus fairly shallow water tables, can we encourage mycorrhizae enough to be able to depend on them for irrigation?
4. For folks on city water, does the chlorine effect plants' microbiome both above and below ground?
5. When do plants start producing exudates? If you had soil from around actively growing plants of the same species you're sowing, could the bacteria and fungi play a role in early seedling vigor & health?
6. Has anyone directly compared the micronutrient profiles of the same crop grown in organic but tilled settings against those grown in no-till, mycorrhizae-friendly settings?
7. Since we know that larger molecules, such as sugar, can be transported across fungal networks between different species (Suzanne Simard is where I first food this info) , have we checked for other compounds created by plants? Say, compounds used by plants to protect against insect herbivory?
8. Since we know blueberries use ericoid mycorrhizae rather than endo- or ectomycorrhizae (which are the two types used by most plants), but gaultheria (salal & winter green) use both ericoid & ectomycorrhizae, and alder uses both endo & ectomycorrhizae (and fix nitrogen too!), and clover use endomycorrhizae, might blueberries be more productive if there's a nearby hedge of salal/wintergreen, alder, and clover? Willows and aspens also both use endo & ecto, so they could be included, and the trees could also be coppiced for firewood or basketry supplies.
I'm going to spend some time this weekend reading research papers. If anyone happens to know any that address these (or related questions), please send them my way!

If you were going to turn the Pokemon villains into Pokemon as punishment, what would be the best choice for each one?
Haha, thanks for asking.
Standardizedbogey and I were talking about this last night because of her fic (which I highly recommend) were Giovanni was turned into a lillipup as a punishment, with doggy instincts and all. Some of these are my own ideas, some we came up with together.
Giovanni: okay, I couldn’t come up with anything as good as a lillipup, but yamper could work for the same reasons of being a small, helpless-looking dog (and we all know he’s a huge cat person), plus, this one gets the zoomies.
Silver: The best way to teach him a lesson in there being more to Pokémon’s worth than battle strength would be to turn him into a Pokémon that’s weak but nonetheless adaptable and determined. Perhaps an abra, which, while incapable of fighting, is intelligent and excellent at escaping bad situations.
Maxie: something very sensitive to changes in the environment. Perhaps a slowpoke would work- they live near water and require the health of a saltwater species to survive. Plus its instinct might deprive Maxie of his ability to use his intelligence.
Archie: like with Maxie, you could have him think twice about his goal by turning him into something that needs a very specific, non-watery environment. Perhaps a numel would work, as they’re very sensitive to water and would surely be wiped out if Archie went through with his plan. Doubles as punishment because numel are slow, weak, and can’t go in water.
Cyrus: Eevee. Just destroy his lone wolf aesthetic and fill him to the brim with instincts to be friendly and want to be with people and cuddle up on their laps because they’re sad. Or because they seem nice. Or because he likes their hat. Or. Or. Or. Or. As a bonus, Mars looks after him for a while and he evolves into a pink ribbon dog that might as well have “I love my friend” written across his forehead and has empathy as a superpower.
N: N doesn’t deserve a punishment, but he’d really hate being a slugma. There’s no handling Pokémon in need if you’d only burn them.
Ghetsis: Ghetsis needs to be taken down a peg in terms of power, so a regional rodent would be good. I think bidoof would be the best choice because then its absentmindedness would keep him from scheming without zoning out. Also, he’d probably have to rely on N for protection because Colress would definitely want to run some experiments on a human-turned-Pokémon.
Lysandre: a good punishment for Lysandre would be to become something insignificant and filthy, so I chose a gastrodon. He’s identical to numerous others of his kind living all across the map, he’s hideous and slimy, he has instincts to bathe in mud and algae, and people look at him with disgust when he visits populated areas. Used to being respected and revered, now people won’t even let him on their carpets.
Lusamine: I don’t really have an idea for her, but she definitely wouldn’t like being a trubbish. It’ll be pretty hard to command the Aether Foundation’s respect like that.
Guzma: Petilil. Guzma would hate being something weak and dependent, and a small, sensitive plant Pokémon would really ruin his aesthetic, plus he’d look tasty to bug-types! Plumeria will look after him, don’t worry.
Piers: Whismur. It can’t do any of the three things Peirs cares about: rock out, battle well, or help his family and community. Marnie would probably have to look after him, and he wouldn’t want that. Its evolutions are stronger and louder, but are just as unable to produce appealing music.
Rose: honedge. It drinks the life force of others, actively undoing what he tried to do. It can’t be around people without doing that, which he’d hate as a massive extrovert.

hi! i come with great news: my beloved Alolan Muk has just been given a clean bill of health from our local specialist! a year ago i noticed that Slippy's poison spikes were looking soft and were slightly discolored (healthy Alolan Muk have off-white spikes that usually appear as teeth/claws) and after a few months he was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease that, over an Alolan Muk's life, leads to their poison slowly weakening...which, as a pile of poison sludge, is Very Bad.
it took a few months for him to get diagnosed because...well, there isn't much research into Muk, let alone Alolan Muk. most people just assume that they can fight off all disease because they're just puddles of death. which is usually true! but...not always. :(
luckily, we figured out what the problem was early on enough that he could be helped. it took a while, but now my vet says Slippy is a happy, healthy boy! i just gotta give him supplements in his food.
in his honor, could you talk about Muk? Alolan or otherwise. i know they're horrible pets and there's a very valid hatred of them, but i think theyre so cool! theyre basically man-made pokemon and my darling little boy is so pretty and friendly and im so lucky to be his owner...even if i can only pet him with expensive specialty gloves that i have to throw away after five uses haha
aww! sounds like slippy's very lucky to have an owner who cares so much about him!
of course, muk isn't a pokemon that we generally want hanging out in residential areas or places with a lot of plant life, on account of the highly toxic poison it exudes as well as its intense bacterial load. however, it has an important role in landfills, where it helps break down trash that would otherwise pile up! in fact, there are some places that it's done such a good job of cleaning up that muk numbers have begun to dwindle there- not enough garbage to go around!
muk is also an important indicator species! indicator species are pokemon whose presence gives us a general idea of the state of the environment. there are actually scientists who specialize in studying how the appearance (or disappearance) of muk relates to pollution levels in an ecosystem!

"Is something wrong with this time of year? I thought March was pretty cool... are there creepy creatures of the dark that come out at this time or something? It seems like switching sleeping spots is freaking you out..."

"I can cut travel time by running. At my fastest, I would say I could go at around 60-70 mph. I could carry you, if you'd like, but I'll have to stop quite a few times in order to rest. I am also ok with just walking, but I still felt like presenting that alternate idea. As for where we go, after looking at the map, I think we can go clockwise toward sky land, counter-clockwise, or make a full circle and end at sky land (if we would like to visit all of the lands). I would like to see the other lands, but I think it would be fair to let you decide which lands we visit. You know this place much better than I do."

"That's the name my siblings call me sometimes! The one I just told you about! Wow. How can I be 'Rango', when 'Rango' is standing in front of me?"

"It's cozy and wormy and warm!"
Tumblr media
Topper: "Oh golly... I don't know what to do... And I don't want Rango to be annoyed at me for continuing to beg him to stay... I-I guess I'll have to try sleeping without him for a change..."
"Um... Oh yeah, no, it has nothing to with animals coming out at night... (That happens at all times of the year-) It's... About my old job... When the nights get warmer, the Koopa Troop starts expanding their reach a bit... Some guards will stay by the castle, and others will go out into the northern areas of Sea, Grass, and... Forest Land. To make sure no threat gets even close to the castle while everyone's asleep. And... I fear that if I sleep outside while some of the guards are in this territory... They'll find me, and... Make me go back... Or they might even do stuff to me right then and there... I'm not exactly supposed to be here, you see... I didn't "quit" my job... I ran away..."
"... DO YOU WANNA KNOW HOW I GOT THESE SCARS? I'll give you a hint. They're from my war days! But I didn't get them from a war. ... That's as much as I'll tell you... Not even Rango has gotten to know any details! I just really hate talking about it..."
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rango: "And, y'know, Emar... I am honored to be an alternate version of you... You're just so nice!!!"
Tumblr media
Spewart: "Anyway- Snow Land is really cold. But they have lots of cabins and buildings for us to go into if we plan to stay for a bit. It'd be a great place for us to take our first break. They have "Public Napping Benches" all over the place, because the local species sleep literally all the time. Also, every creature there is super tiny, fluffy, and incredibly friendly! Buuut, if cute, fluffy, tiny things aren't your cup of tea, then we can skip it... There isn't exactly a lot to do and see... At least, not for US, anyway."
"Grass is kinda boring. They do have the carnival as their main attraction, but I assume you wouldn't want to go there... Plus, Rango would be pissed if we went there without him. Grass Land's main thing is agriculture, so they got tons of fresh crops and really good food... But again, if you don't give a shit about that, we can skip it. It does happen to be our parents' burial ground...... So, I'd prefer not to stay..."
"Sea Land is a beach. It looks so small on the map, because most of it is... Sea. I've been told the underwater area is huge... It resembles something another dimension refers to as "The Lost City of Atlantis." We can't go down there, though... The diving suit rentals are hella expensive and the locals down there speak Greek. The ground area is available, however. It is, like I said, a beach. Very nice."
"And then, my second favorite territory: Mountain Land. There's the mountain ranges above, and the cave system down below. It's like two territories stacked on top of each other! I mainly want to head to the caves, because they have the best taverns in the kingdom... (And the ONLY taverns, to my knowledge!) I always go down there when I'm feeling down on my luck to drink my troubles away~! You can skip all the other places if you want, but we WILL be going there!!! I've been craving liquor for the past three hours thanks to you-know-who."
"After that, we should arrive in Sky Land... I already told you a bit about it, so you'll just have to wait to see it in person. To get up there, though, we have to walk up the famous Rainbow Bridge, which is always... LOADED with tourists!!!"

Well, it's been a whirlwind few days! Thursday I went on the weekly phenology walk at Audubon Trails Nature Center in Rolla, MO. It's the last one of the year, and we were seeing if there were still any wildflowers in bloom in spite of the freeze a few nights before. We did find a scant few Asteraceae with open flowers, but for the most part everything was done for the year. It was a really good experience getting to wander the trails with someone who knows the local flora really well; I'm still playing catch-up on learning (and remembering) native prairie plants in this area, and since they happen every Thursday morning during the growing season, I'm going to make sure and attend whenever I'm in town.
Thursday afternoon I officially taught my first in-person class in Rolla with my basic mushroom foraging intro at the Rolla Public Library. I checked out SO MANY BOOKS from that library as a kid, and so it was basically coming full circle to be able to teach there. I had an awesome audience that packed the room, got some great questions, and really appreciated the support that library staff gave me throughout the entire process. I'm already brainstorming what I want to teach when I head back to this area next spring.
Friday I got to spend immersed in planty goodness at the Missouri Botanical Symposium. I had actually registered last year but ended up not feeling good at the last moment so I had to miss out. Totally worth the entire trip this year, though! There were some really great talks (I especially enjoyed the one on the interplay of geology and plant life in Missouri karst fens), and I even made some good connections and new friends! I am SUCH an introvert that it can be tough for me to go around introducing myself in a room where I don't know anyone, but luckily a friendly extrovert latched onto me and helped me meet some really cool people. (Also, pro tip: having art supplies out and in use makes for a great conversation starter, and if you bring enough for others to use you can have a little science illustration party at your table!)
Saturday I peeled myself out of bed early yet again for a very good reason--I got to lead a lichen hike at Audubon Trails! It sort of felt like cramming for a test because while the basic biology of lichens is the same everywhere, I'm not as familiar with local species here as I am back home in the PNW. So I visited the site a few times on this visit to look for cool lichens and try to get them down to at least a genus level, if not species. Again, really great turnout for the hike--people were having a great time, lots of excellent questions and discoveries along the way. And there were two kids from the Rolla Outdoor Collaborative School on site who were not only THE best guides to the trails there, but they found and showed off some cool stuff (including lichens, AND fuzzy oak galls!) The next generation of naturalists is already well on their way to helping others connect with the great outdoors, which does my heart good.
I gotta start driving back west tomorrow; I have classes in Portland next weekend. So today is being lazy, doing laundry, and helping my folks with a few more things around the house. It's been another great visit here, though, and I'm already making plans for next year. I'm going to try to schedule a couple of classes along the way for my spring trip; since I'll likely be taking I-70 since 80 is sketchy even in April, I'm probably looking at Salt Lake City and Denver for venues. I'm open to suggestions if anyone knows of a bookstore, library, nature center, or similar who might like to host a wandering naturalist infodumping about ecology for a couple of hours!

Name: Foxtrot
Image:
Tumblr media
Mimic species: Camera mimic, peon (current form), soon to be alpha.
Is it friendly or not: Foxtrot can be quite friendly once he warms up to you but he has some trust issues so it may take a while.
Where can it be found: In an abandoned hardware store, wandering the streets for food, or in the main base of the Alliance (future).
What does it eat and how does it get food: Foxtrot isn’t a very picky eater but he refuses human meat (skibidi meat included unless its been dried or cooked so he can’t tell the difference) and cheese for some odd reason.
He will primarily hunt wild animals on the outskirts of the city and bring them back to the pack, he usually waits to eat last out of habit but his packmates are working to help him out of that habit. He will occasionally ask Aaron, my human OC and current leader of the pack, to make something using the supplies they do have.
Which means that Foxtrot will also scavenge for resources and non-perishable foods that are still good.
Does it have any special abilities: Nothing out of the ordinary, he’s just your average camera mimic.
Personal backstory: He was mistreated the entire time he was with his previous pack. Always looked down upon and almost barely got by with food, having to sneak out and catch his own food, most of the time, if he was hungry.
So skip ahead a few years later and he’s out with a hunting party in a long abandoned store. Foxtrot accidentally bumps into one of the delta’s and they finally snap, clawing and biting at Foxtrot. The other members of the pack didn’t do much but they kept Foxtrot from escaping, a few having secretly watched Foxtrot catch food and eat it without bringing any to the pack. After a hefty beating, Aaron steps in and utilizes his powers to scare off the other camera mimics.
Once the other camera mimics had fled, he tried approaching Foxtrot but Foxtrot hissed and scooted away until his back was against a wall. Aaron did manage to lay a gentle hand on his head but after everything that Foxtrot had been through it scared him even more which caused him to scream in fear. So with the help of Runt, a young TV mimic in Aaron’s pack, she used her powers to help calm Foxtrot. Which helped to a certain degree.
So Aaron set some supplies down and pulled out a small first-aid kit before trying to treat Foxtrot wounds. They were successful in treating the worst ones and they simply disinfected the smaller ones before putting a band-aid over them. They were almost done when a TV mimic creeped into the area, this one having ran into Aaron before and leaving him injured, so Aaron used his powers to transport himself, Runt, and Foxtrot back to the hardware store.
So now Foxtrot has slowly been trusting Aaron more and more, he isn’t comfortable enough to let Aaron touch/pet him just yet but progress is being made everyday. -- Here is an entry by @katarikitten! I feel so bad for poor Foxtrot, he sounds like a very good boi that deserves the world! <: (On the brighter side, I’m glad he’s in the care of Aaron now! : D

▷Cʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀ 4
Chapter 3 — Chapter 4 — Chapter 5
With the beginning of the next day, Evil slowly opened his eyes and stared at the ceiling, questioning his own existence, guided by a feeling from the depths of his heart. He got out of bed and walked to the kitchen, where he drank a glass of orange juice. The angel went to Sasha's room, but she wasn't there. Faced with this, Evil hurried to dress and went out to look for her, finding her sitting on the sand in front of the house, playing a lyre made of water. Sasha was completely immersed in her music and Evil, more relaxed, walked towards her.
—You play very well. —He remarked, sitting down beside her and observing the musical instrument. The girl turned to look at him, somewhat surprised as she hadn't noticed his presence.
—Thank you, I love music. —Said in a pleasant tone before directing her gaze toward the sea. —By the way, I figured out why I lost my scales yesterday.
—Oh, really? Why was that? —asked, standing up and also staring at the ocean.
—It's because I was dry. Without a wet or at least humid body, my scales vanish to blend in with the human species. —She explained before looking up at Evil from below, losing concentration and causing her instrument to turn into a puddle of water.
—I understand. — Said the Angel noticing what happened with the lyre. —Is there something wrong?
—I lost my concentration a bit. I'm still not very skilled with my powers. —said the girl in a more serious tone.
—Well, I could help you. I have trained with the element of water before. —he suggested in a friendly manner, seeing her seriousness and intending to get closer to her.
—Yes, I noticed that yesterday! I would really like to know how much you can do. —said cheerfully, showing a wide smile, causing her face to blush. Evil noticed this and, standing by the sea, moved his arms to control the water, forming a flower.
—Join your hands —instructed Sasha, who did so without hesitation, feeling a comforting sensation. Then, Evil carefully placed the rose in her hands. With each passing second, Sasha blushed more, and her heartbeats quickened. Evil gently blew on the flower, freezing it. The mermaid was left fascinated by what she saw.
—Amazing!, it is... so beautiful —expressed, looking at Evil as he stood up again.
—It's for you, keep it.
—Thank you very much... I'll take good care of it. —said with a smile and a joyful expression, it was ironic how that cold object gave her such a warm feeling, this man was making her feel things she had never felt, did this mean this was an opportunity to escape from the burden of her past?
—By the way, Today, I'll go fishing again, but this time, I'll bring back enough food for several days. —Before Sasha could answer, both of them heard a sudden and violent noise coming from the ocean. They noticed a gigantic shark-like creature emerging from the waters, its skin mostly gray but with strange blue lights highlighting various parts of its body, like its dorsal fin and around its eyes. Evil gave Sasha a cold look, she understood and ran towards the house, however, she remained by the front door. The large beast opened its mouth, releasing a series of individuals in technological suits which had containers filled with water and had holographic panels on the facial area. The strange seven individuals walked on the water's surface until they were in front of Evil.
—Who are you supposed to be? —Evil asked threateningly, with an angry expression on his face.
—That's the question we should be asking you. —man at the front replied in a robotic voice, with an offensive  tone as he confronted Evil. —We come on behalf of King Dand, ruler of the Fangs kingdom.
—I see. Let me guess, those suits allow you to survive on the surface, right? —Evil pointed, smiling manically as he thought about ways to punish them. The men around him took out something like a handle from which two coral blades emerged from both ends, forming a double-edged sword.
—Lower your weapons —ordered the one who seemed to be the leader of the group. —Sir, we demand that you identify yourself. You've been seen swimming in our waters aggressively and hunting our people.
—It's called hunger. If you guys spend your time devouring seaweed, that's not my problem. —replied sarcastically and mockingly, but then returned to his serious expression. —My name is Evil, now get out of my beach.
—Listen, Mr. Evil, these are our waters, and if you do not obey our laws we'll--
—You'll what?! —Evil shouted with a deep and strident voice, tired of this nonsense, interrupting the captain while the sand under the demigod's feet spun in circles. The group's leader remained calm while the rest were already in combat positions. As this happened, Sasha was worried and frightened because she knew about the strength of the Fangs realm.
—It was a pleasure negotiating with you, Mr. Evil. —All individuals returned inside the beast and departed the same way they came. After this, Evil turned and walked toward the house. Sasha immediately hugged him, and he noticed the girl was trembling.
—What's wrong? —he asked, concerned, placing one of his hands on her head and looking into her eyes.
—You shouldn't have angered them, they are very powerful and can easily destroy us! —she said, trying to explain her concern to Evil. However, her voice broke in the process, and her eyes became teary with growing fear.
—Hey, hey, calm down. They won't do anything, we are safe. —He said, placing his hand behind her head and leaning it against his chest to comfort her. —Everything will be alright, I'll protect you. Trust me. —he said with a gentle voice, trying to make her feel more relaxed.
It seemed to work, Sasha closed her eyes and enjoyed the peace that Evil provided. Evil carried her in his arms and placed her on her bed.
—Rest a bit, you need it. I'll take care of dinner, alright?
—O-ok. —replied with a small smile. After this, Evil walked out while Sasha gradually felt more tired, finally falling asleep.
Evil rushed to the sea, dove in, and, using his powers, propelled himself at high speeds into the vast ocean and its depths. After a few minutes, he stopped and created a bubble around himself. Suddenly, a crab-like man about 4 meters tall emerged, breaking the bubble by hitting it. Then, he threw another punch at Evil with his large pincer, but Evil easily stopped it with one hand and tossed him forward, causing the monster to crash into a rock. Evil created another bubble and approached the creature, which began to mutate back into a more human-like and smaller form but retaining some crab-like features on his body.
—Why are you attacking me? Who or what are you? —Evil asked the pained individual.
—Don't you recognize me? Monster! I was there yesterday when you attacked my friends!
—Friends? What do you mean?
—Don't play dumb! —he shouted angrily at Evil, who was now confused.
—Listen, I don't come from this place, and I don't know what you're talking about. —The guy sighed and replied, still full of rage.
—I don't know where you're from, but it seems like you don't know much about life at all. Don't you know that most of the animals in the universe are Shapeshifting Animals? You killed and took away my friends!
—Oh, well that's interesting... I'm sorry. I didn't know, but I needed to eat, so... —Evil apologized, even though he wasn't really sorry.
—You can keep the apologies. This is my revenge! —At that moment, a series of enormous chains began to attach themselves to Evil, causing him to sink faster into the depths, leaving him trapped at the bottom of the ocean.

I decided to draw myself an OC in the style of Hell Boss and Hazbin Hotel. And now I’ll tell you a little about each. Well, since I couldn’t decide which species I see myself as, I drew them all. Get ready, this post will be long.
Tumblr media
I haven’t come up with names for everyone yet, so for now they will all be “Chertila” I started from the very bottom and took the imp. An ordinary resident of the circle of anger, who took a design course, earned some extra money and was able to move to Impsiti, where she bought a nice and cozy room, continuing to develop her client base. Sometimes he works part-time at a local coffee shop when there are no orders. He also enjoys shooting in his spare time, preferring rifles and crossbows.
Tumblr media
Along with the imps, hellhounds are located in the hierarchy. I'm bad at conveying sizes, but she is a small black Spitz. I haven't decided on a specific breed yet (German or Pomeranian). She mostly hangs out at Bi's parties, where she can eat for free and even spend the night. He makes money mainly by drawing portraits or drawings to order at these same parties. She is very poorly socialized, she likes communication and the presence of someone nearby, but due to a past toxic relationship she is very afraid of starting and becoming attached, and then being abandoned again, so she simply prefers to be unnoticed in the crowd and draw while incendiary concerts of the Lord of Gluttony.
Tumblr media
On the step above are the succubi. This person is a little different from her relatives in that she does not really like to get to the surface and seduce mortals, as well as engage in constant fucking. Instead, she prefers to draw horney art, animations, and write vulgar fanfiction based on her favorite characters. She also practices tattooing and draws marks on succubi in the groin area and on the tailbones, thanks to which they are saturated with vital energy when making love to people. He also works part-time as a consultant at the s*x toy store Asmodea.
Tumblr media
I probably got confused in the sequence, but next I drew this Baphomet from Leni's circle. She really looks more like a lamb, but it doesn’t matter. Her work is as creative as that of previous OCs, she works in an architectural agency and does landscape design. Mainly deals with projects in his own circle and for the circle of gluttony because Bea really likes unusual and bright projects, which make her territory so special. He makes good money from this, and in his free time he streams games.
Tumblr media
Well, the next one is this deep-sea fish from the circle of envy, which I was inspired by the twins from the last episode of the boss. She is a member of a theater and dance club and, as you know, dances. But because the creatures of this circle are like their sin, their group is not so united and friendly, they are ruled by unhealthy competition, which is why they often miss rehearsals and do not participate in competitions, or do not strive for the first roles. She is depressed by this whole atmosphere, she suffers from damage to costumes and direct harm to her body, but she herself is torn with envy of the talent of other colleagues, whose conscience allows them to add laxatives or spoil a beautiful dress. Why doesn't she leave? It's simple - all groups are like this, she has changed them more than once and has encountered these problems everywhere, but she loves to dance too much and loves the stage too much, but she is also too weak and inexperienced for a solo, so she just enjoys dancing in someone else's shadow and hopes that someday her faint light will be noticed.
Tumblr media
Circle of greed. I thought for a long time between a shark and a dinosaur, but the latter have been my love since childhood. Despite her soft-looking plumpness and pink color scheme, she is quite hot-tempered. She can restrain herself from insulting some no-name on the street (if she is in a good mood), but she often breaks down at all sorts of trolls on the Internet. In addition to her temper, she is also quite sentimental and often overwhelms herself with all sorts of sad thoughts, which then makes her cry. In such cases, he likes to burden himself with work in order to drown out his feelings. She works as an accountant for various mafiosi, she is not associated with any group and only provides accountant services and the preparation of documents and reports, so she lives in relative safety. She loves baking and baking, which often causes her favorite shorts to rip.
Tumblr media
Well, the final hierarchy of this series is goetia She is a young raven, most likely one of Paimon's many children (I did not take a specific demon from the goetia). Her path is poisons, potions and black magic. A pure Slytherin graduate. A book lover like Stolas, but mainly because of his young age, he reads gay fan fiction, which the family is not happy about, but because... She is one of the youngest, she is often bullied, so she does what she wants. He plays the violin and piano, but secretly learns the guitar. Drawing is also part of her education, but she is already tired of endless jugs, but drawing comics or art for her favorite works really pleases her immortal soul.
Tumblr media
Well, the first and last representative of the universe is a sinner. I didn’t take the over of the lords because they are the same sinners, only much cooler and stronger. This seemingly charming girl got here because she was involved in Satanism, and also because of a bunch of crap in her life she was supervised by Roskomnadzor. After going to Hell, he lives like a potato moth. To avoid hanging himself from boredom, he draws. Fan of Velvet because... is a fashion lover. He dreams of working for her, but understands how dangerous it can be, because she looks like Cruela. She's also a fan of video games. She heard about Charlie's Hotel and suggests that redemption is possible, but even if it works, she will never agree to it. She is an atheist in life, and even being here in Hell and knowing about the existence of Heaven, she does not want to go there. She despises religion and considers it two-faced and mercantile, she associates it with a bunch of Popes who organized bloody crusades, priests of fagots, and an insanely huge number of domestic tyrants and fanatics. And Lucifer is her crush.
That's all, thank you if you were able to cope with this. I also noticed that, as is typical for every creative person, I put a piece of myself into each version of the OC, be it clothes from my wardrobe, a character trait, dreams, fears, desires or life position. In general, I sorted myself out for my sins

Minecraft OC (written by Cadence)
Name: Nebula
Age: Unknown
Gender: Female, She/Her pronouns (can use they/them because they’re an ender race if you’d like)
Species: Half Ender-Half Villager
Backstory Blurb: Long ago, a villager couple who looked a bit different from the others (they didn’t have any noses) escaped their village once people began to blame every unfortunate happening on the couple. Once the woman had gotten pregnant, the man found a way to escape-but to escape into another world; at a cost. The two would lose their life, and bring to life a new spawn: what is known as an ‘Enderling’ (I made this up pls don’t come for me sksjehsjsn I’m trying) and she would live in the Nether until she reached adulthood, when she would be allowed to ‘the other side’ to live the rest of her mortal life. During her childhood, she was often very lonely and unusually friendly; she did not like to harm others and would often befriend the monsters who lived in the Nether. They in turn, would protect her from any outsiders good or bad, often without her knowing. She grew up becoming skilled in fighting, but nonetheless she didn’t really learn to speak until her first year outside the Netherrealm when a few friendly villagers noticed her struggling to read a sign in a town she came across on her travels. She is rather nomadic, but she gives those she cares about a special crystal that can summon her as they need.
Powers: Able to use telekinesis (able to move objects with the mind), able to use Ender magic with some issues as far as being able to control them; but not a lot.
Weapon(s): Skilled with a sword, and archery.
Looks description (I haven’t drawn her yet): Is slightly taller than normal villagers, but not by much. Has no nose, and has bright green eyes instead of the usual ender eyes. She has purple skin, with white splotches resembling vitiligo throughout her body. Her legs and arms appear to not be actually attached to her, but don’t leave the vicinity of the areas they’re “supposed” to be attached to as if she actually had shoulders and thigh pieces. She has a fangy smile. Her hair is long, wavy and naturally black with one white streak on her right side.
Personality: Can be seen as a loner, but extremely intelligent. Super great at battle strategies and thinking before rushing in. Not much of a romantic unless alone with a partner, but cares a great deal for her friends and those she chooses to protect. Every day she strives towards success rather than to suffer failure. Seen as a perfectionist and very “by the book”, not many like her when she’s in charge; because she is not really able to work with others well. When she has to however, her plans tend to work better than most other ideas. She is a traveler, a merchant and nonetheless, a “for hire” or “pro bono” bounty hunter, and she has the tough act to match it.
I hope you like :))
+++++++++++
Here is a quick sketch of my friends oc~

saw a tiktok the other day about adding your own niche interests to fanfic and that spiraled into an idea for a ofmd modern day birdwatching au. i doubt i’ll ever get around to writing it but here is my general premise and character ideas!!
stede bonnet recently fell in love with birds and is trying to get into birdwatching as a hobby, so he signs up for a bird walk with ornithologist edward teach. here, he becomes even more infatuated with birds, and maybe becomes interested in someone else too, so it’s all too easy to sign up for another walk.
and of course, our beloved crew are also regulars of ed’s bird walks. birdwatching-related shenanigans ensue!
characters:
stede: middle-aged recent divorcee and father of two, looking for something new in his life, saw a cool bird once and fell down the birding rabbit hole after researching it, bought a bunch of nice equipment but doesn’t know how to use it, thinks birds are cool and pretty, knows pretty much nothing else, but he wants to learn!! favorite bird: northern cardinal
ed: ornithologist and big name in the birding world, chair of his local audubon society in his free time, can tell you everything about every native bird in the area, expert at calls and identifying, but is losing the magic that got him to love birds, getting bored, starts up bird walks for the community to try to bring the love back. favorite bird: american crow
izzy: co-leads walks with ed but no one likes him nearly as much, has worked with ed for years, currently doing research with ed, they get along well and work fine together but in the same way a bickering old couple does, really trying to push ed to keep with research even as ed is falling out of passion, feels threatened by stede and everyone knows it but him, does a lot of the organizational parts of the walks and does not get credit for it, gets visibly annoyed whenever stede talks and is very happy to correct stede when he identifies a species incorrectly. favorite bird: great horned owl
lucius: local college student studying environmental science, knows a lot and is chill about it but is silently judging you because you mixed up a song sparrow and house sparrow, dutifully records every species he sees and how many on ebird because Science, stede is friendly with him and lucius is only mildly happy about it but lets him stick around him anyway, always makes sure to point out to stede what he sees, when he isn’t using his binoculars or recording a sighting he is holding hands with pete. favorite bird: yellow-rumped warbler
black pete: goes to walks for ed because he’s a big fan, has read all of ed’s books and mentions it a lot, claims to have studied under ed when he was an undergrad and ed was a professor but can’t really prove it, always stays near the front of the group, gets excited about the birds very easily and is very passionate about birding and lucius is the only one who can calm him down, always shows up in full outdoors gear whether necessary or not, lowkey gets annoyed when people misidentify things but is working on it. favorite bird: belted kingfisher
jim: always shows up with oluwande, quiet, stays in the back and makes quick remarks making fun of people under their breath, only really talks to oluwande, will not tell you what they see until after the fact when it has already flown away, crazy good photographer and can always get a clear shot of the birds, carries around a fancy expensive camera with a huge lens that is their pride and joy, has 50k followers on their bird photography instagram, still wears the big wide-brimmed hat it’s just one of those outdoorsy ones with the string that goes around the chin. favorite bird: green heron
oluwande: always shows up with jim, reluctant mom of the group, scolds you for not wearing bug spray but pulls some out of his bag for you to use anyway, always has a field guide in hand for reference, makes sure everyone is with the group and no one is lost, great bird walk conversationalist, softie at heart but knows how to push jim’s buttons (even though they don’t mind), big on bird twitter for his jokes and for always being the first to report on rare bird sightings in the area, also posts jim’s photography #supportiveboyfriend, always wearing signature orange baseball cap, crocs are his birding shoe of choice no matter the location. favorite bird: mourning dove
frenchie: believes the ivory-billed woodpecker is still out there and will tell you about the time he saw one, has been in local birding circles for years, knows his shit but is nonchalant about it, jots everything he sees down in a notebook and refuses to use ebird or anything similar because it “ruins the sanctity of birding” and he doesn’t trust Big Tech, scared of bugs, big on environmentalism. favorite bird: pileated woodpecker
roach: big into hunting, started going to walks to get better at finding birds to shoot but ends up liking birding more, always has a big hunting knife on his waistband and whips it out anytime he hears a twig snap, makes baked goods for the group and brings them for an after-bird-walk snack, knows a lot about hawks and other birds of prey. favorite bird: turkey vulture
wee john: will hold back low hanging tree branches for you so you don’t get whacked in the head, primary bird interest is ducks, not as interested in songbirds and other smaller species but comes along anyway because he loves a nice walk, generally quiet but is quick with witty remarks, calls all birds he sees no matter what species “tiny baby” or “little lad” or some other term of endearment. favorite bird: wood duck
buttons: almost weirdly knowledgeable and overly passionate about shorebirds, can always find a gull even if they’re somewhere where there should not be a gull, when the walk is near the ocean one particular gull he calls “karl” will find him and sit on his head and no one knows how he does it, never carries binoculars but can always still see and identify the birds perfectly, shows up to walks with nothing but himself but is perfectly fine anyway and is probably one of the best birders in the group. favorite bird: red-billed gull
the swede: beginner but very enthusiastic, not good at birding but absolutely loves birding, can’t remember species names for shit but is great at finding birds and pointing them out, no one likes him but everybody loves him, great at mimicking calls and really wants to show you. favorite bird: common grackle
fang: part of ed and izzy’s research team, besties with ivan, loves birds and birdwatching so much and can’t get enough, loves animals in general, points out other wildlife seen on walks like squirrels and such, always brings bird seed and can get birds to eat out of his hand somehow, you want to walk with him he’s great company, will start crying if he sees something cute. favorite bird: black-capped chickadee
ivan: part of ed and izzy’s research team, besties with fang, lowkey hates izzy but is along for the ride, definitely too experienced to be there but is enjoying himself anyway, has the best birding tips, definitely not afraid to go off path to follow a bird he hears. favorite bird: red-winged blackbird
in conclusion i love birds and i love the silly gay pirates and i had way too much fun thinking this up.

RvB Merfolk!AU
In the news that I'll be unable to get on the internet soon, I'm making sure I posted at least one more AU of mine before I have to leave. And the one I've chosen is my merfolk AU!
Basically, the RnB's, most of the major Freelancers, and the PFL AIs are different species of merfolk. Almost everyone is a different type, so that means there are a lot on unique designs for everybody! I haven't gotten to it yet, but I'm hoping to be able to draw at least some of them and maybe post them on here (preferably whe I have a phone and a better camera).
In this AU, the Freelancers have their own pod that is unusually large for the present day's standards. (Pods are what I'm calling a group of merfolk. If there's an official name for groups of merfolk then please let me know!) Due to their dwindling numbers, a pod of 3-5 is the common number, although pods will come together briefly to migrate to better feeding grounds. The Freelancer pod, however, consists of nine members, including multiple healthy adolescents. They are led by a strong leader, Carolina, with equally great co-leaders (I can't come up with a better name rn), Tex and Carolina. The pod is constantly moving, making them very hard to locate, which is their intention. It's better to stay always on the move so no one can find them.
Then we have Charon Industries, run by old multimillionaire Malcolm Hargrove. To the public, Charon Industries is a scientific research organization who research rare marine species to learn more about them to "allow humankind to understand these endangered species". Of course, that's not what they're really doing: they actually capture merpeople and other marine species to experiment on them and shit. They have public displays of species other than merpeople for the public to see, and give the excuse of "merpeople are at a higher intelligence and conscious levels than these other species and shouldn't be on public display as if they were animals themselves" so none of the public eye gets to see them. This is a good reason to not have public displays, so everyone goes along with it. But really, they don't care about the merfolk's "higher intelligence and conscious levels" and see them as animals, like every other creature they're experimenting on.
Felix, Locus, and an OC of mine known as Archer are all poachers for Charon (Sharkface would be too but he's got to be a mershark. I mean come on). There are multiple scientists who work behind the scenes, including Doyle and Kimball (who is working like CT in PFL), and several interns only working in public-friendly areas (these interns, ofc, are Chorus cadets, as well as Delaware). These interns WILL cause trouble and you WILL enjoy it.
Then there's the PFL AIs. They are all merbabies who were made in one of Charon's labs. Lots of them died days, hours, or even minutes after being created, so the only survivors are Delta, Theta, Eta, Iota, Epsilon, and Tau. They're all a recent project Charon started on, so during the present-time for the fic, they are all very little.
And then we have a merfolk sanctuary known as Longshore. It's run by Florida (who else right haha), and Freelancers like Wyoming, Utah, Georgia, the Triplets, etc. work at or with the sanctuary, along with some other Chorus kids who are mostly college/graduate school students who are volunteering for extra credit and such. And Dr. Grey is the sanctuary's doctor. She used to work for Charon years ago, but she spoke out about their unethical ways and was immediately fired and made to look like a crackpot so no one believed her. Of course, this comes back to bite Charon later, so joke's on them really haha. This sanctuary is where the RnB's are at. They'll come up later.
The Director is a scientist interested in Charon's studies, unknowing of how unethical the company is. He wants to fund them in their research, but he's heard faint rumors of how Charon is secretly awful, so he's trying to find out if these rumors have anything behind them first. So yes, he's not a complete douchebag... it was a hard decision to make but here it is.
Now, onto more of the plot. Hargrove catches wind of the Freelancer pod, and ofc he is interested. No one has seen a standalone pod as big as theirs in years. Decades. Possibly even centuries. Hargrove thinks that there's something going on with them to have as many members in it and he wants to know what it is. Like that's any of his business, but whatever. So he results to “let’s capture a few of these guys to see how different they are from other merpeople I have stored in my collection”. (Literally nothing is different, other than they're actually healthier than most of the other merfolk he's captured. He doesn’t care and just decides to keep them.)
So he sends his poachers out to search for them. It's extremely hard to do so when they're always moving and no one knows where the hell they are. It takes literal years of constant work in the field for them to find even a trace of the pod.
But unfortunately, they eventually catch up with them. They're able to capture Wash and Mich, two of the pod's adolescents. Archer realizes that these two aren't even adults, and while his partners don't care, he does care, and is not liking the fact the company has resulted to capturing young ones now. And so begins Archer's redemption arc.
Meanwhile, back in the ocean, the Freelancer pod is furious that two of their members have now been captured. Carolina immediately leads them all in the direction the poachers went. Some of the more pessimistic members (*cough* South *cough*) say that Wash and Mich are long gone, but no one is giving up. Pod members are extremely loyal to each other, and none of them are going to abandon their captured friends. They eventually meet up with Niner, a lone merperson who happens to be a great navigator, and she joins up with the pod to help look for Mich and Wash.
Then there's stuff that ends up leading to one of Charon's interns, Del, Kimball, and Archer rescuing Mich and Wash, as well as the surviving AI merbabies, and taking them to Longshore. Mich and Wash are traumatized from being separated from their pod and for everything they went through at Charon, and are immediately assigned to the Reds and Blues pod. They gradually warm up to their new pod, but obviously they are still wishing they were with the Freelancers.
The AI merbabies are each assigned to an older merperson to take care of them. Mich originally only has Tau, but all of the others (besides Epsilon) are unhappy with the merperson they were assigned to, and they all decide Mich should be the one who takes care of them. Mich is at first delighted they all like her... but then she realizes how exhausting it is to take care of a bunch of merbabies and it's stressful. At least it's a distraction from worrying about her pod...?
Eventually, Niner is able to locate the sanctuary, and in turn Mich and Wash! The whole pod is so happy to see them again :) so they try to break Mich and Wash out so that they can all leave. Mich and Wash are overjoyed to see them again! But they've got all these merbabies now and they don't know if it's safe to move them around... Carolina reassures it is (she did help raise Mich after all), but Mich and Wash aren't so sure. Eventually, the pod gets caught trying to break Mich and Wash out, and Florida does his best to explain that it's best for Mich and Wash to recover from their traumatic experiences while not having to worry about getting caught all over again. After a lot of problems and arguing, the pod decides to stay at the sanctuary.
Meanwhile, Hargrove is furious that Mich and Wash seemingly escaped. He believes someone let them out but doesn't know who, so he's now suspicious of everyone. Del, Kimball, and Archer are all trying to gather up enough evidence to convict Hargrove of all the shit he's done. It's quite difficult, however, to get cameras in or out (every employee has to go through one of those metal detector doorways that airports and stuff have every time they enter or exit the building). So there's going to be a plan involving on of the other interns and their relatives who will visit the public-friendly displays, smuggling the camera to the area the merfolk are kept, and not getting caught on surveillance cameras while capturing the evidence. They'll get the evidence to the Director, who brings the issues to the public. Hargrove will get charged for experimentation on creatures and all the other shit he's done, and uh all the scientists involved will have to go through court stuff. Idk how this sort of thing would work so I've still got to do research to get more details out of this.
Now I'm going to give descriptions on everyone in the Freelancer and Reds and Blues pods, because it's necessary and awesome, and honestly what I'm most proud of so far with this AU.
First, I'll start out with the Reds and Blues pod. Sarge is one of the longest residing residents at the sanctuary. No one other than Florida knows his story and he doesn't want to talk about it. I haven’t figured out the whole thing yet but I’m thinking that his whole pod died somehow, maybe a pack of orcas, and Sarge got injured and Florida rescued him. He's a bull shark merman, and as you would expect, has a huge temper and a liking for violence. He is not afraid to resort to violence for his first reaction to anything, especially if it's to protect his pod. Because he doesn’t want to lose this new one like he did with his previous one :) He is the leader of the Red Team portion of the Reds and Blues pod. (Sarge has insisted on a separation between the Reds and Blues since the beginning)
Grif is a laid-back koi merman who would rather be sleeping than dealing with everybody else's shit. His and Kai's parents got killed by hunters when they were kids, and they were rescued by the sanctuary soon after. He often steals other merfolk's fish snacks if they don't eat it fast enough, and is known as the ultimate food snatcher of Red Team. He isn’t the most friendly and doesn’t like to socialize like his sister does, but he is pretty close to Simmons.
Simmons is a dolphin merman and is the most skittish little booger that you've ever met. I know there's a ton of different types of dolphins, so I'll try narrowing it down to something more specific, but I wanted to go with something more than the trademark bottlenose. Anyways, he got abandoned by his parents after his tail got mostly bitten off by a shark. He washed up on a beach and was found by one of the previous volunteers. Dr. Grey was able to save him, and made a prosthetic for him, kinda like in that movie Dolphin's Tale. He's been scared of most of everything since losing most of his tail, and all of the Reds and Blues try to help him overcome his fears. Grif is the one who he becomes comfortable with first, and they have been pretty inseparable ever since.
Donut is a cuttlefish merfolk because they are so shiny!!! I think they can change color so that seems like something Donut would like. He's still pretty young, barely out of his adolescence stage, and is a peppy ray of sunshine who does his best to make everyone smile. He is the one who does his best to make sure all newcomers are happy in their new environment. He had been found as a young merkid wandering around with just Doc as his companion.
Doc is one of those bioluminescent fish you find deep in the ocean. Not necessarily an anglerfish, maybe something slightly less scary. Maybe a dragonfish? Anyway, everyone is scared of him at first, especially as he begins growing into his normally terrifying features, but he's the nicest guy you've ever met. He and Donut have been friends since they were very young, and they plan on sticking it together till the end.
I know I really should have Lopez here, but I really don't know what to put him as. Maybe a blow-fish because "passive-aggressive prickly butt hmph" but how would a blow-fish merman work??? If he got startled or angry, he would get too round to really fit along with the human portion of the body. Maybe he could just be a regular blow-fish that hangs around the sanctuary.
Church is the leader of the Blue Team portion of the Reds and Blues pod. He's definitely a shark--maybe like one of those smaller fast sharks—makos maybe? He really doesn't want to deal with anyone's shit, not now, not ever. He didn't really want to be leader of the Blues' side, but Tucker is incompetent, Kai is too young as well as incompetent, and Caboose is... no (they tried that out once and it ended in a disaster). So, the job was left up to Church. He actually found the sanctuary rather than being brought there—he had been bringing Caboose here because he wanted this guy to leave him alone and he thought the sanctuary would be the best place for him. Church just ended up staying.
Tucker is a shark merman as well—probably something calmer though, like maybe a nurse or lemon shark. He has a pup named Junior who is a shark merkid too. He had gotten separated from his pod when Junior had nearly gotten eaten by a squid in the midst of the pod migrating. By the time Junior was out of harm's way, their pod was long gone. They wandered for a long time before the sanctuary brought the two in. The two were able to fully recuperate and now Tucker is back to being his obnoxious stupid self. No one missed that.
Caboose is a squid merfolk, because eight arms and two tentacles means ten extra limbs to hug with! He is literally ginormous and often intimidates those who do not know him. He’s tries very hard to not hurt anyone with his suckers as he hugs them, but sometimes he forgets if he gets really excited. He was found by Church, who had been looking for someone that definitely wasn't him, and just latched onto him. Literally. Church had been the first merfolk Caboose had seen in who knows how long and Caboose would not let go of him for the first few days.
Caboose has a pet... starfish? Who looks all cute and harmless but haha watch out. Those who are mean to Caboose will get a nasty surprise. AKA slow and steady, Freckles the starfish climb up them and bite them. It has happened multiple times to Church, which pisses him off very much, and Caboose has to remind Freckles to not go after Church.
Kai is Grif's younger sister and also a koi merfolk. She's more yellow than her brother and definitely more friendly. She is a social butterfly (sea butterfly?) and likes to mingle with the other pods at the sanctuary, as well as her own. Grif says she's too young to remember their parents being killed by the hunters, but she actually does remember and is quite traumatized from it. Any mention of hunters makes her swim for cover :(
And now for the Freelancer pod! Carolina is a very strong shark merfolk. Maybe like a tiger shark? That’d be rad. She became the leader of her pod (which had been consisting of just herself, York, Mich, Tex) after her adopted mother stepped down to allow Carolina to take her place. After Carolina became leader, the pod began migrating around a lot to find lone merfolk to join them. She's a good leader and always puts her pod first. She loves her pod very much and would do anything for them. Including go through the entire ocean to find their two youngest members after they got abducted by stinky poachers.
Are otter merfolk a thing? They better be because that's what York is. If not, I'm making them a thing now. Because otters are playful as shit and like if he proposed to Carolina by giving her his favorite rock I would die (yeah I know that's a penguin thing but could it be this guy's thing too?). Also aren’t they really good with their hands? They use them to beat clams and shit with rocks so like yeah that’s cool. Otters are just awesome and it’d be cool to see York as one. Anyways he and Carolina have known each other for a looong time. Like, since they were really young and all of their parents were still alive. I'm thinking both his and Carolina's parents might've gotten abducted by poachers because why else would they feel so strongly about poachers and staying away from them?
Tex is a great white shark merperson, period. I can't think of anything better and really, I don’t need to. She was a part of Carolina's pod before parents started getting fishnapped, and was some sort of nanny except super badass. After most of the other pod members were abducted, Tex was the only one left who was old enough to lead, so she did. She also raised three moron merkids, so to keep them all safe and raise them into smart(?), healthy individuals earns her mother of the year award. Once Carolina was old enough, Tex let her take the seat as leader because it was Carolina's birthright anyways. No slaying heirs to the leadership title here! Tex is a good team player now, and she and Carolina are NOT enemies <3
Mich is the younger sibling of York, so she's a merotter as well. She was just a baby when her parents were abducted, and she was raised by the joint contributions of her older brother York, Carolina, and Tex. Who knew raising a little baby was so hard! She was an asshat baby who was very difficult to wrangle and she loved making her caretakers' lives a living hell. But she settled down a bit after Carolina became the leader and they started migrating around, because now she had more places to roam and more things to occupy her with. She tuned down even more so when they picked up Wash. Now she had a friend to mess with and she was able to redirect her mischievous spirit into something other than torturing Tex and the others—torturing Wash! Don't worry, he was okay. He helped her calm her stupid ass down, and she helped him not be such a worry wort.
Wash is a dolphin merman, I think. Maybe a smaller dolphin like a spinner? Or whatever those pretty black and white ones are called. His parents were snagged in some poacher's nets and he had to flee for his life. Carolina's pod found him soon after. He was quite traumatized and stuck in a deep shell but Mich was able to help him out. They became immediate best friends. I mean at first he was genuinely scared of her crazy… everything, but he soon realizes her intentions are well-meant and she’s not so bad.
C.T. is a young octopus mermaid who joined very soon after Wash did. She and Wash had actually been a part of the same pod before his parents had split from the pod. C.T. was very happy to reunite with Wash, and vice versa. C.T., Wash, and Mich became quite the trio because I said so. They are all just best friends. There is much chaos. When Wash and Mich get abducted, C.T. is very scared for them. She is among the most earnest to travel far and wide to find them again. She needs to get the other two members of her trio back :(
North and South are eel merfolk because I say so. They are complete opposites in all ways except one: they are extremely loyal to each other. And they both have purple eel bodies. Though North has a darker purple body and South's is more lavender. They were making it pretty okay on their own, after South had run (swam) away from their pod and North had followed. But they were happy to join Carolina's band of misfits when they came along. South wasn't too thrilled to join when she found out little nuisance creatures were there (*cough* Mich *cough*) but North loved them, so she went along with it.
Maine is an orca merman because yes big dolphin big man. He is selectively(?) mute and only talks when it's really necessary for him to do so. He had been alone for many years before Carolina's pod found him. It took him a while to once again get used to being around others, but everybody helped out with that. He eventually showed his weakness for dumb children because he often took Mich and Wash and C.T. off of York's and Carolina's and Tex's hands/fins to take them playing/exploring for hours. Everyone was very relieved for the peace and quiet.
Niner is a barracuda merperson. She joins after Mich and Wash are captured and the Freelancer pod are on high-travel mode. She had been alone for a long time and decided joining a good, strong pod like the Freelancers was a pretty good idea. Besides, she is an expert at navigating the water currents and oceans in general, so she proves to be a valuable asset to finding Mich and Wash.
Then the AI children! Delta is a sea turtle merbaby. He is definitely green and a very practical child. He is constantly questioning everyone else’s logic on everything and it can get annoying but they still love him. He was the most agreeable merbaby out of everyone, so Mich favored him over most of the other merbabies when she had to take care of all of them. All the same, she was glad to give him up to York once he came along. York was a bit perplexed about a merbaby as serious as Delta but he just went with it lmao.
Theta is an octopus merbaby. He usually stays a mixture of purple and orange and is very skittish. He is very clingy and likes to wrap his arms around the few people he is comfortable around (Mich and North mainly) when he’s scared, or just any time really. He wasn’t like the most difficult merbaby to deal with, but he was always literally hanging off of Mich’s arms so she was very happy to hand him off to North. Theta immediately bonded to North which was very good, and North loved him as well. South isn’t so keen to have this kid around but she ends up loving him too. Theta comes to love his new aunt after he realizes she isn’t as scary as she likes to act <3
Eta and Iota are twin seahorse merbabies. Eta is very scared of everything, and Iota is a very happy merbaby. Eta is yellow and Iota is blue ofc. When Eta is feeling scared, he curls his tail around Iota’s and it’s honestly really cute. Mich found it hard dealing with them because Eta was a fussy merbaby who was scared of everything, so he cried a lot. Iota did his best to comfort his twin but there’s only so much a newborn can do. Carolina wasn’t thrilled to hear if she took one, she took both, because the twins are a buy one, get one free situation. She ends up warming up to them though.
Epsilon is a type of crab merbaby because I say so (also he’s crabby haha). He is different than the other merbabies because he’s more land-abiding than the others. He’s got claws and is always willing to snap at somebody, whether he’s unhappy or not. He is assigned to Wash, and is the only merbaby besides Tau to be all right with the merperson he was originally assigned to. Wash is sort of frightened by Epsilon because he’s always snapping at everybody and has this perpetually grumpy look on his face, and honestly wished Epsilon didn’t imprint on him. But alas, Epsilon did, and Wash is the only person, mer or not, that Epsilon fully likes and snaps at the least. He looks an awful like a baby Church, which everyone wonders why the fuck he looks that way…
Tau is a squid merbaby because red!! He is a very curious child who is all into swimming off to find new things to discover. He uses all eight arms and two tentacles to touch things he probably shouldn’t. Tau was Mich’s favorite because he reminded her a bit of herself. She decided to keep him as her own after the Freelancers came and took up all of the others. Tau likes to lay on Mich’s stomach while she’s floating on top of the water like baby otters do with their moms <3 She held all of the merbabies like that and Tau seemed to take a liking to it the most.
And that's what I have so far! I love this one ngl (really I love all of my AUs) and I'm excited to draw their designs and write stuff out for it.
If anyone has suggestions about this or any of the other AUs I will be posting about, don't be afraid to send an ask or discuss it in the posts!
