The live action Scooby-Doo movies?

I did not see this ask until RIGHT now (first time on desktop since crab day, second time since Nov 5 2020 [which was DOUBLY experience since I got my phone taken the same day]) so I'm going to assume this ask got eaten on mobile because tumblr, HOWEVER you poked a bear with this ask anon (as I'm sure you knew when asking) SO without further ado: my Scooby Doo live action opinions

So when you say 'live action Scooby-Doo movies' I'm assuming you're talking about the James Gunn films, starting with Scooby-Doo (2002) followed by Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, just due to like, generally popularity and also the fact that I have actually seen those films. However shoot another ask if you wanted me to include Curse of the Lake Monster in this (because I will if anyone cares and turn this into a live-action scooby dissertation, i'd just need to like. watch the movie first) But anyways where I'm going with this is that this post is about the Gunn movies aka the ones with SMG, Freddie Prinze Jr., Linda Cardellini, and ofc our #1 man, Matthew Lilliard.

Okay so my take on these movies is... complicated. I wouldn't say it's as complicated as my feelings towards SDMI, because I watched the live actions way less as a kid and generally care less about them, but still no matter how much shit I throw at these two movies there are parts that I generally like (even love) that stops me from totally condemning them wholesale. Like the fact that these movies are FUNNY! There's so many moments from this duology that are just beyond iconic "like, that's one of my favorite names!" the whole thing with Scooby in the dress at the airport, ET. CETERA (like I can go on!)

The Gunn movies are genuinely SO fun and I can 100% see and understand how they've stood so well in the public view as a representation of Scooby. HOWEVER, this is where you start to see my problems with them. For the general American, (because that is the audience I'm familiar with) ESPECIALLY millennials and younger, who happen to make up the majority of both people on this site AND people I talk about Scooby with in real life, these movies, and the elements they introduced as "quintessential scooby tropes" are the base of their understanding of the Scooby franchise, along with likely some miscellaneous WAY episodes and maybe SDMI.

Which is where I get pissed off. In the pushing of the narrative of "breaking away" from the Scooby norm, Gunn basically invents (aka totally makes up) an idea of what classic era Scooby was like, cementing an idea of classic Scooby into the public mind that is totally disingenuous and just straight up false. For example, in attempting to portray Daphne as having taken strides to be seen more seriously in solving mysteries and defending herself, it pushes the narrative that in the classic era she WASN'T taken seriously, and only existed as a damsel-in-distress prop of a character, which is just not true??? Like yes, Daphne is clumsy, that's a part of her character, and her friends (because, fun fact, the gang ARE friends) joke about it sometimes because that's what friends DO. Framing that in some kind of sexist "that's all she does" lens is just total bull, especially as gang members fall into secret passageways/get lost etc. in WAY ALL THE DAMN TIME because that's how the plot functions! Like are we calling Velma ditzy for losing her glasses every other episode? Of course not, and Fred falls into passageways all the time, not to MENTION Shaggy and Scooby and all they get up to. Also one last thing on the topic of Daphne, like this idea of her mystery solving skills not being respected by the gang is just so supremely bullshit it amazes me sometimes, especially when she was the LEADER (or leader adjacent) through pretty much all of her appearances in the 1980s [Not that James Gunn could look at '80s era Scooby without spitting on it, but I digress]

AND THIS IS JUST DAPHNE! Like the perceptions pushed towards Fred (and Velma, but mostly Fred) through these movies are just as bad! Like okay, with Fred---In these movies Fred is just an asshole. I hate Gunn Movies!Fred. I mean yeah he can be funny but it's almost always so mean! Almost nothing makes me madder than a mean Fred by the way. If he's putting other gang members down (even halfway, like with his whole "dorky chicks like you turn me on too" line, which... ew) then to me something has gone very, very, VERY, wrong in your basic understanding of Frederick Herman Jones as a character. Like he's the cheerleader! He puts himself in between his friends and danger! He loves nets, and traps, and Elvis impressions, and wrestling, and the trapeze, and cars, and most of all he LOVES sharing the things he loves with his friends! (Sometimes to a bit of an extreme. No one wants to hear about your net facts, Fred) And the live action movies just don't understand that at all. And I know there's maybe something to say I suppose in that some of those aspects of his characterization hadn't been "established yet" by the time "Scooby-Doo" came out in 2002. But it's there if you look. For Fred Jones, being the leader means being the caretaker, (he's the Mom friend what can I say) and any version where he's cruel and arrogant and just DOESN'T CARE about his friends in the way he's shown to in the Gunn movies is just so far from Fred to me it's not even funny. And what makes it even worse for me is that this (or at least something similar) is the idea of Fred that has really spread to the popular culture. Just the "leader", the jock that makes the rules, the one that [insert X adaptation here] finally gave a personality and made interesting (something that has been said more times than I can count for pretty much every gang member, save Shaggy and Scooby).

And I haven't even touched on Velma, and how they gave her a bit of a early 2000s smart superiority girl complex against Daphne, plus the whole makeover thing and etc. etc. The Gunn Movies are pretty much what would happen if you took someone who hadn't seen Scooby since they were 7 years old (and honestly had a pretty negative outlook against it then) and tried to "fix" it, only his memory was so bad he just made up problems (and threw in a good helping of early 2000s style sexism with it) convincing pretty much the entirety of the popular culture that said problems exist and that Gunn was absolutely brilliant for fixing them (and then bringing up said "problems" whenever anyone wants to talk about Scooby) and this entire rant has been without even fucking MENTIONING what is probably the reason you, anonymous tumblr user sent this ask in the first place, to I, Swishy "Scrappy Doo Redemption Arc" Broke-on-books (dot tumblr dot com), which is his HIGHLY SUCESSFUL and utterly sadistic character assassination of my number one man, Scrappy Doo.

And I am going to try my damnedest here not to get totally into my highly passionate opinions over what James Gunn did to Scrappy in the first of his Scooby movies and how thoroughly it has pissed me the fuck off because I have been writing this post for over an hour now and if we start to really get into my feelings on this topic it will certainly be a couple of hours more but like. That Fucking Bitch. I give James Gunn personally a solid eighty-five percent of the blame for making my life as a Scrappy Doo fan UTTERLY unbearable with this stupid fucking movie alone, and just his Scrappy crimes would honestly be enough for me to say that I hate this movie, not even considering the numerous Scooby crimes I've been talking about here for the past million paragraphs, but the part about this movie that makes me the MOST mad the most pissed off is that it's actually a good fucking movie. James Gunn wrote two hilarious and entertaining movies that have become beloved in the popular culture for their successes in that arena, while at the same time pissing all over the core themes and messages of the franchise of which it was based, that of friendship.

TLDR; The Live Action Scooby Doo movies (written by James Gunn) are highly entertaining and fun pieces of media to watch, and are widely loved by the general public and looked at with fondness and nostalgia because of that. However, as a hardcore Scooby Doo fan (writing that phrase sounds so ridiculous but oh well) the existence of these movies and their impact on the popular culture can be extremely frustrating (despite any personal nostalgia said fan may have) due to their spreading of a misinformed picture of what "typical Scooby Doo" looks like. This picture is especially frustrating due to the fabrication or exaggeration of problems present in classic Scooby (such as sexism in regards to the girls), as well as giving more ammunition to other problems in Scooby fandom (such as oversexualization, and sexualization in general, which no one wants to see in regards to their children's cartoons, like HONESTLY.) Discussions of sexism and sexualization in Scooby (both of which ARE present and are issues, although not at their worst in WAY) can often lead to an overlooking of the issues that are very present and clear in WAY and have continued since then with far too little resistance (I'm 100% talking about the racism here) HOWEVER that topic deserves at least a dozen posts of its own that I am no way informed or qualified enough to even begin to think about writing. The Gunn Movies are frustrating to many longtime Scooby fans because of these reasons, but for me, and fellow Scrappy Doo fans there is also the added aspect of the demonization of Scrappy Doo in the live action movies and the affects that has had on the popular culture as well, making it uniquely inhospitable to like or enjoy the character of Scrappy. So officially, Glitch Techs haven't been canceled but given how we're approaching three years since the last episode with no update at all, ir might as well be. Apparently, there were 10 episodes that made it to the storyboard phase (which also included a crossover with TMNT) but Nickelodeon for whatever reason put a pause on them.

Zahra x Five is very cute and actually a nice subversion. Typically it's the main character who's starting off at the new place of employment that ends up crushing on one of their co-workers who work there but this time it's the other way around. I also love the fact Zahra is just as much of an awkward dork as Five is when it comes to talking to him.

So you're telling me glitch techs was already so close to starting production for season 3,, and nickelodeon just basically pulled the plug on it?? Smartest animation company executives

Also I like how glitch techs doesn't just immediately force the two main characters into a romantic relationship. And as far as I can tell, Miko doesn't seem to mind Five and Zahra flirting, which is truly a breath of fresh air. It's nice to see a show that doesn't create a love triangle that just feels forced and unnatural

#I say i watched it in 2 days. It was across 3 but it was like. Basically 2 days. Im not that bad that i cant count time. Fyi #Also i hope its clear what i mean by comic booky bc i didnt know how else to say it. Hi may i know your thoughts on ezzo?

YES OF COURSE thank u for asking <3

So for context for anybody who just reads/watches main story rezero, Ezzo is a side story character who joins the Felt camp and takes up a role similar to Otto as an internal affairs minister. He’s a dwarf with strong magical ability, which I’ll get into in a bit.

Ezzo to me is just a massive nerd whos a very earnest guy, able to go from being a walking dictionary to probably one of my fave scenes in the Felt camp side stories as he’s seriously injured. His whole onesided rivalry with Roswaal is so funny to me, especially how he keeps getting annoyed with Garfiel and then they bond over both hating him for very different reasons. He just wants to get more titles Roswaal has a monopoly on, poor dude.

He’s just so fun to read. In the Priestella Reconstruction Journals he starts shaking Liliana and rambling about bards and history (he’s just like me) and keeps butting heads with Garf over their contrasting personalities.

Riot in Flanders first has you pity him as Camberley gets him working for a brothel, but you genuinely realise he’s a hardworking earnest guy. Teaches prostitutes to read and write, something he still does when he joins the Felt camp. I won’t spoil the SS, I strongly recommend people read it, but Ezzo to my knowledge is the only guy ever to “damage” Reinhard in some capacity. He uses an attack to counteract Rein and is able to remove two of his jacket buttons, though at great cost to himself.

I think the appeal for me is how he’s a mix of Joshua’s rambling and fixation on certain topics, with Otto’s unlucky nature, and some of his own earnestness that he’s not afraid to compromise on. A lot of characters with a sense of honesty about them tend to avoid things like revenge, but its really refreshing that he is fully willing to do anything to stick it to the people that did something to a person he cared about.

Usually I hate like “the gotham villains are so FUCKED UP and SCARY” shit in batman but for some reason all the scenes in the audio adventures of these freaks just menacing people rule. Like its always so fun

#I think its partly because they all do it in different ways and theres also alot of focus on them as characters instead of just #them being Scary. Vander is humungalogongus, Huck is Tiny, putting them together just emphasizes both of those qualities in such a delightful way aaa <33

GOD AND THE MUG. THE MUG WAS SUCH A SMALL GOOD CHOICE.

Vanders hand wraps around that tankard like it owe's him money smmnmdsnd whereas Huck would probably need to use two hands to do the same.

I just. It's such a great use of contrasting character designs!!

AND THE TWO SITTING TOGETHER !!! LOOK AT THAT BEAUTIFUL CONTRAST!!!

Like sure Vander is big, but next to Huck,, he is BIG big. Absolute giant, I love how it helps boost those Protective Vibes he's meant to have!!! <333

AND THE SAME THING WORKS PRESTO-REVERSO FOR HUCK. He looks so insanely small compared to him, and joint with how he curls into himself, all of it just makes him look so. fragile.

It's such a fantastic way of getting across the Vibes of the characters in a nonverbal way. giving the animators my bank info as we speak.

I brought this up somewhere else but. Big Eyes + Small Pupils That Can't Sit Still adds so much more,, stress and tension to everything he does. I'm sorry the design details have me by the throat what can I say.

THEY GIVE HIM SO MANY. BEHAVIORS. The drumming of his fingers is my favorite - it pops up three times that I've noticed.

The bar, before Vander hands him his drink.

The table, when he's getting upset about the deal going south.

The counter of the Apothecary's dispensary in ep.6

ITS SUCH. A MINUTE DETAIL BUT IT ADDS SO MUCH PERSONALITY.

Like even outside of his tinger-tapping - the way his eyes can't sit still, his very jittery uneven movements, his eyebrows are almost always Bunched Up in that worried expression, that nervous laugh like UGHHHH <333

His lanky frame and frantic gestures have entranced me

There's so many good details post-timeskip I gotta talk about MSNDSM

I. GRMGKRKGR. The way they re-introduce Huck makes my brain start bounding off my skull

First he's fully covered by the cloak, he looks relatively normal

then he falls backwards, revealing that he's completely emaciated, far past his previous thinness.

THEN we get the close-up shot to show the tumor, giving us a glimpse into just how damaging shimmer has been on his body - his hood even falls off to give us a full look.

I JUST. GOD. The escalation. Those small moments of Tension-Release are scattered all throughout Arcane and they all give me such massive brainworms.

LIKE EVEN FOR PPL WHO MIGHT NOT REMEMBER HIM,, ITS JUST SUCH A GOOD WAY OF REVEALING THOSE DETAILS.

and for the people who DO remember him it adds that little layer of,,,, Youch

AND THAT ANGLE. GOD. It really feels like we're looking down at him from the barrel of Cait's gun. The cinematography in this show is always so pretty.

(this is also the moment where we can see the escalation of his habits!!)

His eyes are more jumpy, his hands are more expressive, that nervous laugh he has is escalated to the point that it. sounding like he's gonna burst into tears. ('I- I owed her old man my life. Probably more.. than that - I guess' ..... Bill Lobley did such an amazing job w/ his voice aaa)

My absolute favorite detail they added was post-timeskip Huck's,, self-soothing behaviors?

He holds his own hand, he leans against his arm - at one point he tries to rub his forehead before flinching back, forgetting his tumor is there AAAA </33333

It's so clear he isn't accustomed to contact, which makes Cait's hug feel so much more cathartic </3

HE JUST <33333. They really emphasize how vulnerable he is. His constant fear and his desperation to not be afraid is such a key part of his character.

Like he says himself that one of the main reasons he turned to shimmer was to finally, finally make other people the ones who are afraid I JUST. AAA. I FUCKING LOVE THIS GUY YALL IDK WHAT TO SAY.

He's!! genuinely happy that Vi is gonna get help!! It's so clear that the choice he made to turn in Vi wasn't one he made easily.

If there's any last thing to say it's just. The crew did such a good job adding all that depth. Huck gets 5 mins total on-screen and they still took the time to flesh him out.

GO2 SPOILERS

ok I know everyone is still freaking out over the kiss but theres like 5 and 3/4 episodes worth in the rest of the season that have barely been touched.

Forget the kiss for a moment so we can talk about Crowley mentioning Alpha Centauri when the LOVERS Gabe and Bee needed somewhere to go

Crowley mentions that it's a place he'd always like to go whilst also implying to aziraphale (however intentionally) that he thinks it's a great place for LOVERS to run off together

And he had asked AZIRAPHALE to GO WITH HIM to this place only a few years ago

You can see it on his face, aziraphale doesn't notice at first but then it clicks for him and he DOUBLE TAKES

and don't get me started in the expression he gives. Just so surprised and hopeful as if to say "did you really imply what I think you did"

okay, time to talk about the cartoon critters

I finally finished the scripts of the first 10 episodes of the Smiling Critters Series, this batch called ''Spring Season''.

What they're about? Come find out, there's something important at the end!

List of episodes

1-Sunny pancakes and Bitter coffee

Synopsis: The day just started in Orion Town, and Dogday is ready to start with it!

2-A magical world

Synopsis: Is game night in Crafty’s house, and the unicorn had decided to introduce Dogday and Catnap in her crusade.

3-A sad sunflower

Synopsis: Bubba is keeping his garden on point, but there one plant of his that is worrying him: His beloved Sunflower.

4-Flower Boy

Synopsis: Picky is looking for the perfect theme for her room during spring, but her thought process are disturbed by the flower shop owner.

5-The Soul Snatcher

Synopsis: While looking for berries in the forest Dogday find a injured critter, but his good intentions could put all town in a big trouble.

6-Cool delivery

Synopsis: Kickin work is to deliver the Piggy’s orders to all the critters in town, a work more easy to say that make.

7-Sweet little tooth

Synopsis: Bobby loose her first tooth, and while the other critters are excited for her, she’s not really happy of the idea of giving her tooth to the tooth fairy.

8-Plant a wish

Synopsis: A day helping Bubba with his garden end up with some problems for the critters after mistaking the regular seed with some magics seed from crafty.

9-Sleepy sounds

Synopsis: Catnap wake up in the middle of the night by a strong, annoying sound. Say sound came from no other that Dogday, that had started to snore.

10-Underground race

Synopsis: Hoppy had finally finish her underground maze, and had dare all her friends to see who can get to the center first.

In my Au (aka in the game universe), this first 10 episodes worked as a season test for Play.Co to see if the critters could be a good money cow for them, and the results? Really positive! So they asked the marketing area (that was the one that communicate with the company that made the cartoon) for a full season of 44 episodes (incluying this ones) that where divided in Spring-Summer-Autumn-Winter, with 10 normal episodes for each season and 1 special episode.

The special episode for Spring is the Flower festival, but it was released as a season finale in hope to restart the seasons with new 44 episodes, but by then Play.Co didn't wanted more episodes, so the story was left with a cliffhander...

BUT, let not think so ahead, theres now 10 episodes available, but what to see first?

'm really indecisive in what episode draw first, so 'm going to let you all choose wich one would you like to see.

thinking about how cool and awesome moon stone cassandra couldve been if she wasnt given the world’s worst villain motivation

dropping my whole au / rewrote of season 3 below

uh preface is im sleepy and its almost midnight, so like sorry if some parts dont make sense or whatever

uhh basically, instead of cass trying to like reach her destiny or whatever as like her Main motivation and the only reason to why she Evil and Malicious ive changed it so its more mixed in with her desire to protect rapunzel. i think moonstone cass is cool and i like the idea of her but i really just think her execution was poor mostly because it wasn’t built up as much as it shouldve been.

rewrote cass’s character slightly just so there more empathize on her idolization of her mother, and so when she learns the truth of why mother gothel left her, the knee jerk reaction to blame raps makes a little more sense.

Anyways, Season 3 cass deals with a lot of her issues, i think on the journey to get the moonstone something something happens and cassandra is told that if rapunzel comes in contact with the moonstone she will Implode. Like die. Return to being the sundrop. and cass is like oh fuck, shit, balls, I need to Protect her from Dying. So out of her intense Need to protect Rapunzel she yoinks the moonstone, and (still slightly pissed at raps for stealing her mom but not really she’s just trying to figure out her emotions + rapunzel needs to get away away from this rock) she goes into Evil mode.

Her villain arc is partly fueled by her anger at her own situation, always in second place. her desire to feel love and cherished and important rather than being the 2nd option. However, it is also fueled by her need to provide safety to her friends ,, even if it’s not the smartest choice. Moonstone Cass devotes her entire identify to being the cliche villain, so no one feels bad if like the solution to destroying the moonstone is killing her. she knows that logically the Zhan Tiri is manipulating her but 1. she idgaf and 2. she needs to learn how to control the moonstone’s power so she doesnt hurt her friends.

Tbh boiled now, it’s just cass isnt obsessive with mother gothel and mother gothel leaving her to kidnap a baby because it made like no sense for her character. like instead, moonstone cass grabbles with her identify and place in the world, who she is outside of rapunzel. Also she wants to learn more about her past, yknow, who mother gothel was and is she Worth getting upset over. spoiler she figures out that no, her bio mom sucks booty

Anyways, throughout my version of season 3, cass is trying to figure out a way to destroy the moonstone. She visits Rapunzel often too and pretends to be evil just so she can check in. She angry at her mom but not so much on rapunzel, maybe a little bit but probably more to with simply trying to crave out her identify outside of rapunzel. Same general plot beats happen in s3, but shes more grief driven than anger driven i suppose.

Theres probably a lot i forgot to like, reformulate in this especially w s3 bc i havent had the time to rewatch it and collect my thoughts that well. But, uh, hope u enjoyed. might yap more about my personal gripes with the show and how i think it shouldve been written.

also to add on i suppose, at the end of the series she gets exiled from corona officially, but lowkey comes back to hang out and after like a year every1 is like yeah okay i guess.
