so Vi and Hunter live in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, huh? What’s that like? Also, I know that Mal is a bit wary of his claws and it hyper vigilant with them around others, but is Vi the same way? How do those two differ personality-wise?
It works for them!
Hunter (Swapfell Fruition Papyrus) likes the outdoors and being able to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, so he really enjoys having a place out where neighbors and rules and cops are at least a few miles off. He can head into town if he’s looking for entertainment, or company, but otherwise he’s got a place to go back to that’s remote and quiet and all his…well, mostly his, anyway.
Vi (Swapfell Fruition Sans) is away a lot for work but when he’s working from home or just getting back from a trip, he likes the seclusion too—nothing better than getting to settle in, kick off your shoes, unbuckle your belt, and go hog-wild on a box of cookies have a snack knowing no one’s around to judge you…except maybe your brother, who’s statistically more likely to be out in the woods somewhere than sitting in the living room.
As for Vi’s claws, they never got as sharp as Mal’s (Swapfell Sans), because Vi didn’t have to fend for himself (and his brother) in the same way. Vi’s not weak, but he’s not as strong as Mal either. He’s smart, and fast, and he can hold his own in a fight but he’s not a finisher because he was never meant to be and—because Gaster was in the picture to ensure that Hunter developed into the asset he was meant to be—Vi never had to.
For the same reason ('he never had to'), Vi never really developed a lot of people skills. Mal is charming and knows how to say what people want to hear, to get them to do what he wants them to do. That was a vital skill for him to learn and lean into as a young skeleton on his own with an even younger skeleton to look out for, to disarm enemies, make allies, earn sympathy or reciprocity from those who otherwise might not care what happened to him (and Rus).
But for Vi, people weren’t a potential source of help or favors. For him, people were just eyes and ears—and more importantly, mouths, that could report on things they saw or heard, to people who shouldn’t know those things. Loose lips could tip off a target early, or identify him and Hunter as involved parties, or worse, let some things about Vi and his future plans get back to Gaster.
So while Vi is very aware of people, they were more a thing for him to avoid, steer clear and duck the notice of, and that’s pretty apparent anytime he actually has to talk to someone. He’s not smooth, he’s not charming… he’s very direct and straightforward, awkward and tends not to be much for social niceties beyond the bare minimum of basic manners, leaving the moment his goal or obligation is completed.
As for how he and Mal compare, I’d say they’re both calculating and shrewd, both paranoid as hell, both self-motivated and driven regardless of sacrifice…but Mal shines in social situations and loves to impress, be envied, be feared, be respected, be known to those around him.
Vi would much rather disappear, be hidden, be unseen, unknown—though he does notably run hot and cold on it and sometimes being perceived is the only thing he wants… but he tends to squash that want deep, deep down until it goes away. It might be easier for him to demand ask for attention from a partner he trusts, if he can ever manage to find himself one of those.

how will the main characters from ut help their friend (or adopted human child in the situation with Toriel and Asgore) if they find out that they have fallen in love with Papyrus/Sans?
Undertale Sans - Oh boy. He didn’t sign for this ??? It was pretty obvious you were interested in Papyrus, but Sans never thought you would come see him to ask for help. He’s kinda panicking right now. Because, first, he doesn’t want you to take his brother away, but in the same time, he wants his brother to be happy and you are making him happy. This dilemma is too had for one skeleton to bear and he just falls on the ground like a seastar. Sans is not helpful.
Undertale Papyrus - Papyrus is a bit too overexcited at the idea you are trying to know his brother more. He will give you his dating manual, and will gladly roleplay with you. You are trying to explain him nicely that it is not helping since he kept flirting with you and Sans is not a flirty one, and kept proposing you to gift him bones, but he’s trying his best so you can’t get mad. Sans is happy you are bonding with his brother, so it kinda works ?
Undertale Toriel -  ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). Toriel is very glad you are interested in Sans/Papyrus. You see, she knows them for a little while now and she knows exactly what can flustered them. The look on Sans’ face when you offered him that plastic duck dressed in bikini was priceless, but probably not what both of you expect in the first place. For Papyrus, she bought you a bungee jump. Nothing like two minutes of absolute terror to get closer ! And it worked ! You knocked so hard Papyrus skull during the fall that you knocked both of you out !
Undertale Asgore - Asgore knows more Sans than Papyrus, so he can only help you with him. He gave you one of the golden flowers of his garden, since they are very rare now they are not Underground anymore. Well, you are not sure it worked. When Sans saw the golden flower, he kinda jerked up like you burnt him and blasted the poor golden flower. You are not sure why he panicked like that, but you spend the rest of the afternoon hugging him the time his panic attack stopped. So, in a way, you get closer from him ? Thanks King Fluffybuns !
Undertale Undyne - Undyne is a lot more close from Papyrus and will help you mostly with him. But she recommended you to throw Papyrus from the window of a skyscraper, rushing down stairs and catch him before he dies. That’s sound a bit too brutal for you. Also, she says he loves figurines. That’s already more feasible.
Undertale Alphys - She’s looking around her to see if you are really asking her that. Then she said “What do you know about cosplay ?”. Oh boy. Your boney crush is not ready for the evil nurse costume. Or you thought they were. Sans is looking at you with confusion and Papyrus is scolding you for stealing a nurse costume at the hospital. You knew you should have chose My little pony.
 Undertale Frisk - * FLIRT. They also help you roleplay. Except Frisk is way too more investing at a point where it becomes a bit scary. Be gone, demonic firtatious creature.
Undertale Chara - “Easy. You stab Papyrus, then you go to see Sans and you tell him : Eh, I see you are SANS a brother now, maybe I can be your wife or something ?” You decide precisely not to do that.
Undertale Mettaton - He wants to create a TV show where your love one have to save you from dangerous things. You almost agreed until he said that he will be the one holding the chainsaw to cut you in half while Skellyboy is risking his life fighting a white shark in a giant pool. You thanked Mettaton and LEAVE.
Undertale Gaster - ??? You were having a nice chat with your fridge when that thing absorb it and tried to talk to you. You understood that you need to tell Sans your feelings out of the goop. Actually, that’s not what Gaster was saying. He was begging for help to get rid of the fridge, but it helped anyway.
Undertale Grillby - “Easy ! Pay his tab or buy him Ketchup.” You decide to look at his tab. After fainting three times after seeing the amount, you decide to buy ketchup instead. It’s working just as well.
Undertale Muffet - “First, you wrap him up in a nice sticky web. Then, you lay your eggs. And then you eat his head.” What the hell were you expecting of a spider ?
Undertale Burgerpants - “Little buddy chummy pal, if you want to live an other day : DON’T.” Well. That’s kinda an advice I guess.

BUCCI GANG AND HOW THEY WOULD PLAY UNDERTALE
Since I got my friend into the UT fandom, and the brainrot for this game is slowly coming back, I've figured that I'd fuse my favourite franchises and make this post, enjoy!
GIORNO:
-This may surprise you, but Giorno would almost do a Blind Pacifist run
-While at first, he was planning on taking out whoever got in his way, he changed his mind in the moment he saw Toriel
-After she taught him how to resolve the various conflicts peacefully, he decided not to fight, but to show MERCY to every monster
-He finds the multiplicity of choices a very interesting mechanism, especially since he's not much of a gamer, and he's pleasantly surprised to see such an innovative game
-While most of the times he would completely avoid the FIGHT button, if a monster got on his nerves a little too much, he may attack it until it doesn't want to fight anymore
-He takes the time to interact with everything and everyone, he wants to enjoy the game at its fullest
-He was so freaking lucky to meet Gaster on his first run
-Actually brought the piece of snowman with him
-He's part of the "Chara defense squad", and finds them strangely...relatable
-He was just about to do a full Pacifist route, but he couldn't bring himself to SPARE Flowey, and killed him
-"I won't let you hurt her"
-Ultimately, he regretted it, and reset his save file
-After doing a TRUE Pacifist, he left the game, leaving the monsters alone and giving them an happy ending
-Only knows about the Genocide through gameplays
-Favourite character: Toriel, but also likes Chara quite a lot
-Favourite OST: Memories, followed by home, Undertale, Megalo strikes back and Star (he doesn't care if they actually don't play in the game)
-What SOUL would he have: DETERMINATION
BRUNO:
-My man wouldn't hurt a fly if he had the chance to, off to the Pacifist route he goes
-Similar to Giorno, he finds Toriel a very comforting character, but he feels bad for pretty much every monster he meets. He thinks it's unfair for them to be forced to stay in the UNDERGROUND, and wants to find a way to destroy the barrier at any cost
-He's never played a videogame before, but he gets the hand of it quite quickly, even though he still ends up dying a couple of times.
-He would also be the kind of player to interact with EVERYTHING, paying close attention to whatever the passing monster has to say
-Sometimes, he likes to take a break, lay down and listen to the OST of the place he's exploring
-The most challenging enemies for him were Undyne and Asgore. It took him a while to realize that the only way to spare her was to run away, and he just really didn't want to hurt Goat papa
-He lets the bird carrying him to the other side, even if he doesn't actually need to move around. He just wants the little guy to feel appreciated
-Veeeery reluctantly, he decided to SPARE Flowey, it would have been a waste to kill somebody now, after everything that he had done so far
-He almost cried at the Pacifist ending
-He refuses to even acknowledge what happened in the Genocide route
-Favourite characters: Toriel and Asgore
-Favourite OST: Fallen down, but he also likes Heartache, Home and Waterfall
-What SOUL would he have: KINDNESS
MISTA:
-Mista's first run would be a Neutral. It's not that he enjoys killing the monsters, he's mostly just too lazy to think of a way to spare them
-If it's obvious, however, he'll just casually show the enemy MERCY, there's no need to take out absolutely everyone
-The only one who he genuinely looked for a way to spare was Papyrus. Honestly, he couldn't bring himself to just hurt him 'cause he had the chance to. Besides...He was afraid of what Sans would have done
-Speaking of him, he finds his jokes HILARIOUS, and he will use them in real life conversations if he gets the chance to
-He basically wasted all his money fighting Undyne
-He didn't buy the spider donut in the RUINS, and was forced to farm gold for 3 entire freaking days and buy one directly from Muffet
-After finishing the neutral route, he decided to go back and try the others. His next route was a Genocide
-He was about to shoot his computer AND himself while fighting Sans, but he eventually managed to beat him. Of course, after swearing at 3 A. M., drinking 10 cans of Sprite, listening to Megalovania on loop and threatening to throw Narancia out of the window because he interrupted him while he was playing
-His favourite moment during the Pacifist was cooking with Undyne
-He immediately questioned his life choices when he finished the route and saw Chara taking over Frisk's body. Closed the game and never opened it again
-Favourite characters: Papyrus, Sans and Undyne. He refuses to choose an absolute favorite
-Favourite OSTs: Megalovania and Song that might play when you fight Sans. He also likes Bonetroulse and Spear of justice
-What SOUL would he have: BRAVERY
NARANCIA:
-Narancia playing this game would be a total mess. Ironic, considering he's the one in the gang that likes video games the most
-Despite Toriel's guidance, at first, he would FIGHT every monster that got in his way, following the simple "It's an rpg, the more I kill, the better it is" logic
-When he saw the "but nobody came" screen, however, he freaked the hell out and immediately reset
-After that mini heart attack, he went on a full Pacifist route. However, sometimes, he would snap and accidentally kill a monster. He lost count of how many times he had to reload the file
-He also really likes Toriel (she's just very popular among the Bucci gang). The reason for it...Is not a very happy one, like in Giorno's case
-He genuinely tried to stay with her, he didn't want to leave Goat mom
-He's the one who gets emotionally invested in the game the most, he even forgets it's a game at times and just erase the surrounding world from his head
-He LOVES to voice the characters while he plays, it makes the story feel way more alive for him. He makes a very good Papyrus impression
-Speaking of which, his favourite parts of the game were the interactions between Sans and Papyrus.
-He lost his s**t when he arrived at the Temmie village. He stayed there FOR HOURS farming money. Heck, he even bought the Temmie armor
-He refused to open the game for two days after Flowey stole the SOULS
-He wanted to ask someone to play the TRUE lab with him, but he refused to admit that he was scared
-While he's not the kind of player who stops by to read every dialogue, he makes an exception for Snowdin. He really likes that area of the game!
-While he would never admit it, he cried three times during the Pacifist route. The first time when he left Toriel, the second when he heard Chara and Asriel's story, and the third when he finished it
-His favourite fight in the game is the one against Asriel. He kept on repeating the "Don't you have anything better to do" dialogue for 20 minutes, before giving up to the idea that there was really no way to save him
-After giving the monster an happy ending, he was overwhelmed by his own curiosity, and decided to try the Genocide route...Boy did it go wrong
-You thought he cried a lot during the Pacifist? He became a freaking fountain during the Genocide. Every single time he killed a Boss, he cried, with no exception
-He spent days trying to defeat Sans, until he was given the option to SPARE him, and so he did
-...The others could hear him yelling from the other floor after what happened next
-He got tired of Sans' bulls**ts, reset and did a Pacifist again
-He watched a gameplay to know what happened in the Genocide ending. Chara's jumpscare still haunts him
-Narancia gets really involved in the stuff made by the fandom, especially fan made songs and comics
-He listens to "To the bone" religiously, it's part of his routine
-He tried and failed to figure out how AUs work
-Favourite character: Papyrus, followed by Toriel and Asriel. He used to like Sans a lot too...But now he gets Vietnam flashbacks every time he thinks about him
-Favourite OSTs: Bonetroulse, Hopes and dreams and Snowdin. He can't choose between them
-What SOUL would he have: INTEGRITY
FUGO:
-Fugo would categorically refuse to reset on his first run. What it's done, it's done, and he has to take responsibilities for his choices
-He would do a Neutral, killing whoever he encounters, but without specifically looking for the monsters just so that he can kill them
-That doesn't mean, however, that he dislikes to play with the timeline. It's quite the opposite, to be honest
-Fugo enjoys messing around with the save files A LITTLE too much, dude basically became an hacker playing this game
-In his attempt to make a Pacifist run, he fu**ed up and accidentally got the Hacker ending
-"...THIS IS NOT WHAT I MEANT WHEN I SAID I WANTED EVERY ENDING"
-He toned it down a little after that, but he still managed to modify the FUN value enough to meet Gaster and his followers
-He's also the only one who unlocked Sans' room. He doesn't trust him, but he finds him an interesting character
-Neither the Pacifist or Genocide endings particularly picked his interest, even though he did punch the walls a couple of times fighting Sans
-He likes to try the different Neutral endings, he doesn't do all of them, just the ones he thinks that would affect the monsters the most
-The only character he got attached to emotionally was Alphys, he can see himself a lot in her
-He's very interested in the various theories that surround this game, and he's waiting for Deltarune to come out, he just wants to know more about Gaster
-Favourite character: Alphys, but Gaster is a close second
-Favourite OST: Darker, darker, yet darker, followed by Here we are, Waterfall and Premonition
What SOUL would he have: faded BRAVERY
ABBACCHIO:
-MERCY? Is that a food? Yeah uhm...No, that doesn't exist with Abbacchio, nothing but Genocide for him
-It's already a surprise someone convinced him to play this game. He'll play in his own way, and that means killing literally everyone, not simply the ones he encounters, but even looking for them just to earn more Exp
-He was...Weirdly satisfied when he saw the "But nobody came" screen, and he was lucky enough to find every monster almost immediately
-He hadn't found a single character that he liked until he reached Undyne. Her sense of justice reminded him of his old self, which wasn't exactly pleasant at first, but at least he felt something
-He was finally happy to see a monster actually trying to stop what he was doing, and killing her was the only thing in the game that made him slightly sad
-He's still offended for not having the chance to kill monster kid, he couldn't stand that child
-He skipped through pretty much every dialogue in the game, not that there are many people to interact with during the Genocide...
-He'd eat a piece of the snowman right in front of him just to spite him, then take the rest and leave
-He didn't care about whatever Flowey was trying to tell him about his past. That's also because without knowing he's Asriel, most of what he says doesn't really make sense
-In the moment Sans dodged his attack, he realized that he had screwed up REALLY bad. After dying against him a couple of times, he considered resetting, but he wouldn't have let "the lazy skelefu**" have it his way
-He let out a huge "YES" and a sigh of relief when he finally managed to hit him, it took him around a week
-However, little did he know, that the worst still had to come. When he noticed that he wasn't the one who had just killed Asgore and Flowey, he freaked out a little, and Chara staring directly at him made him feel a small shiver down his spine
-Still, he decided to decline their offer to destroy everything, not because he regretted what he had done, he just wanted his revenge on the child for scaring him
-He closed the game after the jumpscare, and never questioned what the hell he had been through
-Favourite character: Undyne
-Favourite OSTs: But nobody came and Battle against a true hero, he also likes The fallen child
-What SOUL would he have: very very faded JUSTICE
TRISH:
-Trish got into this game just because of its music, she kept on hearing it everywhere and wanted to understand where it came from
-She was kinda scared at first, videogames aren't exactly her forte, and her encounter with Flowey didn't help
-She slowly got used to the dynamics of the game, even though she died at least three times in every area, exept for the RUINS. (She only got a game over two times there)
-She doesn't have the heart to hurt anybody, she thinks the monsters (well...Most of them, at least) are adorable! Shyren is her favourite minor enemy, and when she saw the "Taking piano lessons again" text, her heart melted a little
-She refused to take off the faded ribbon until she found she tutu, but she never sold either of them
-She loves flirting with literally ANYONE. You can? Well then...You must!
-Her favourite area is Hotland, including the Core too. She loves the whole "artificial" theme of the place, and she had a lot of fun reading Alphys's posts!
-She would pretend to be an actual part of Mettaton's programmes, but only when she was 100% sure nobody could hear her
-Needless to say, the boss fight against him was one of the funniest parts of the story for her
-Another thing she absolutely adored were the dates with Papyrus and Alphys, especially the latter. After everything that had happened, it was a nice opportunity to relax for a bit
-Similar to Narancia, Trish gets really involved emotionally in playing the game, and she had to take a little break from it before facing Asgore
-The ending genuinely made her cry, but it was the only time she shed a tear through it
-She doesn't care about trying the Genocide, she's worked hard to give the monsters an happy ending, and she wasn't going to throw it away
-She's in love with the Undertale Musical by Man on the Internet, she knows pretty much every song by memory
-Favourite character: Mettaton, but she honestly really likes all of them
-Favourite OST: Death by glamour, followed by Metal crusher, Power of NEO, and Another medium
-What SOUL would she have: INTEGRITY
Yes, I know that Narancia's part is longer, but it's just so funny to write about this baby, bear with me please 😌

An Error's Journey
Chapter 11
Previous - First - Next
After the horrible tragedy of the “True lab” as Alphys began to call the area, Sans just couldn’t be the royal scientist anymore, or even work in science. Just as Lust had predicted, he resigned and gave his position as the royal scientist to Alphys.
He lounged about the underground and in his home for a while, wearing his slippers hoodie and basketball shorts more often than his old slacks and lab coat, but keeping his turtleneck. Lust started spending as much time with him as he could, helping Sans through everything.
They began to spend many days talking or cuddling in silence. When Sans simply couldn’t bear to think about all the sins crawling up his back, Lust entranced him with stories of the surface. Lust experimenting with different clothing styles, enjoying his house on the edge on “New New Home” -a very creative name on Asgore’s part-and star gazing each night.
Lust had also discovered that as much as he likes late nights running through the buzzing town in a crop top and tights, he loves a nice late evening in a warm cozy home drinking some iced tea. Thus, Lust introduced him to aesthetics, specifically “Dark academia” as Lust called it. Which mostly was composed of shades of brown, grey, black, and white; with some yellow and red tossed in on occasion.
Inspired by all the outfits Lust had begun to put together, Sans picked up sewing again-already knowing some from fixing up clothes for Papyrus from the dump. Soon, all of his lover’s clothes were hand-made and adjusted just right for him, Sans even picked up embroidery along the way to add subtle star designs to the edges of his clothes.
Papyrus eventually caught wind of his exploits, and after a bit of dodging, Paps eventually asked if Sans could remake the outfit from his favorite game. Sans decided that nothing was wrong with it, and obliged. Even if Lust was giggling the whole time he worked on it.
Papyrus never took the costume off again.
At least he’d graduated by then, so no one bullied him for it.
Lust explained he did the same thing for Pink, for their world’s version of the game. Pink only recently changed his outfit, adopting casual sweaters and slacks to match with his Mettaton, who he’d grown close to since they arrived at the surface. Lust is pretty sure he’s fallen for the robot.
Sans was still confused about who Mettaton was, as there are no robots in his underground. Lust smiled and shrugged.
Sans stayed for another year or so before he decided to move from New Home to their storage house in Snowdin, everything reminding him too much of Gaster. Lust offered to make portals to easily move everything about, which helped greatly with moving.
Papyrus surprisingly wasn’t too bummed about moving and was instead excited to be living in the snowy mountains, vast woods, and frozen rivers that made up Snowdin.
However, he soon found the reason why when he talked to Asgore about moving.
Since humans seemed to be falling into the Underground a lot, Asgore and the current Captain of the Royal Guard, Gerson, made a new position in the Royal Guard called “Sentrys.” There aren’t any more openings anywhere, except Snowdin.
Asgore and Gerson were careful to explain the position, and so was another monster, Undyne. Undyne is the second in command, watcher of Waterfall, and soon to be Captain of the Royal Guard, Gerson’s retirement fastly approaching. She’s strong blue fish monster that has more than earned her place in the guard, training under Asgore for most of her youth.
Undyne even looked like someone you didn’t want to mess with, armor on or not. The fish monster often carried a spear around, her ironic magical attack, and both her eyes were usually twinkling with yellow magic. Ready for a fight at any moment.
The job offer was simply to watch out for humans and be prepared to attack or capture them on sight.
Sans tried to decline the job offer, despite everything-the teasing and playing, he still cared for Chara and couldn’t bear to hurt a human with their memory in mind, yet Asgore seemed prepared for his hesitance and proposed to meet in the middle. Sans could watch over the human as they went through the underground, escorting them personally or guarding from afar. Then Asgore could take care of the messy part.
It’s an over-glorified ferryman to death, but they need the souls to escape the underground. The job would give the money needed to keep them stable-the reserves saved from his position as Royal Scientist already running low. It would also give him and potentially Papyrus something to do.
Sans finally agreed and told them he would talk to Papyrus about the job offer, in case he didn’t want to join.
After the meeting, Undyne pulled him aside and began to talk about what Papyrus had been doing while Sans was moving their belongings to Snowdin.
Papyrus had asked over and over to be made a Sentry, and for a time, Undyne was able to distract him from the job by having him follow her on her routes, “preparing” him for the job.. After a few days this didn’t work anymore, and so she began to teach him how to spar, Papyrus surprisingly strong. It wasn’t long before that didn’t work to distract him either.
Undyne was holding back the position from Papyrus because just like anyone else who met Papy, she knows he doesn’t have the soul to kill a human, nor lead them to their death. Despite his age, he’s still childish, with a highly optimistic outlook on the world, at least outwardly he shows this personality. Undyne played with the idea for a moment that he could have the soul to do it, and just preferred not to show that side of himself.
She even went as far as to say that with the right prompting, he could make an amazing Royal guard, even to second in command or Captain, but at the moment that’s not the case.
Undyne and Sans agreed that he wasn’t ready for such a mentally taxing job, and agreed to “give” him the job and that both of them would share the duty of keeping him from the truth of it.
When Sans got home that day, Papyrus was ecstatic to hear about the jobs, and as expected, agreed to take the position. Soon they were officially Sentrys and were set up in their different stations between the Ruins and Snowdin.
Lust began to visit him during shifts, and so did Core.
“How are you, Sci?”
“It’s just Sans now… I’m doing as good as I can be.”
“My apologies, although that’s good to hear.” Core’s pupilless eyes seemed to drift toward Lust. “How have you been, Lust? Doing well I hope?”
“Yeah, I’ve been doing well.”
“Great. I’ll see you soon, Sans, goodbye you two.”

The Wrath of Life
Tumblr media
Light. Light of all colours in rainbow except for purple.  Surrounded by a golden aura. It was beautiful yet he is afraid.  When he tried to touch it. It burned him. Causing him screech a unholy sound with repeated phrases like. "Sinful creature and True spawn of hell."
There was a knock at the door.
Do these people have a life outside of bullying me?
He thought as he opened the door.  Except that the person was not who he is expecting, in fact he doesn't think he has ever seen him before. Before he could the stranger's name. He barge in straight to the guest room. "What a lovely house you two have, Nightmare." He said putting down his things . "Do you mind if you can run hot bath for me?" He asked.
"Um. First of all I don't even know you.  Second you can't just go to people's houses and expect them to treat you like royalty. " He said crossing his arms. The stranger look at him. "I thought Dream already told you about me." Nightmare thought of what Dream said before he left. "Neil?"
"That's me."
"Hold on if you are really Neil then give me proof."
Neil removed his cloak. Revealing that the cat has lost an arm. Nightmare felt guilty.  " Don't put on a sad face little boy.  You are just being protective of your home, and that I applaud you." Neil woke Nightmare with his thoughts. Neil then smile. " I guess I forgot that Dream told me you're not very trustful with strangers." Neil scratch his head "Speaking of which ,  Do you happen to know a person name Hubert Cumberdale or better known as Salad Fingers?" Nightmare gulped.  It's been awhile since he seen Hurbert his first and possibly only friend.  Last time he ever saw him was the time he had to take Hubert to the asylum. "Yes. I've know him." He answered.
"Hubert wanted me tell you thank you." Neil responded.
"For what?" Nightmare asked.  He doesn't remember giving Hubert any kindness in fact he thinks what he did was horrible. "Because of your actions Huber is now married with a beautiful wife they had a lovely child." Neil responded.  Nightmare sigh in relief. " So I was worry  for nothing?"
"Yup. Now can you please run me a hot bath?" Neil responded. Nightmare decided this time he would run him as hot bath.
~~~~~
Dinner was not like what he was expecting.  Instead of him cooking it was Neil. But at least it was good. Baked beans with roasted ham. With a cup of wine. He felt comfortable knowing the person living with him for a while is friendly. "Hey Night, what time is it.?" Neil asked. Nightmare looked outside. "Well it is dark." He said. "Well time for me to hit the sack." Neil got up and went to his bedroom.
Maybe I should go to sleep as well.
Nightmare thought. He took of his shirt. Brush his teeth with a dry corn cob. And went the his bed.  Falling asleep as soon his head hit the pillow. However instead of his normal nightmares this one felt wrong. He was wearing the same clothes Moon was except it was mostly black and sliver. He has markings all of him and he was behind a female paladin. Her skin was kissed by the sun itself. Her short hair looks like fire and her eyes were a red and yellow gradient.
"Sun. Is something wrong?" He spoke, but it wasn't his voice.  The paladin said nothing. "Sun?" The paladin turn with a flaming sword in her hand. "What are you doing?" He said backing away slowly, but the girl's eyes turned snake-like. And she jumped to him. Stabbing him with her blade. He quickly got the blade off of him screaming.  "WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?" The girl didn't answer.  Instead she showed her snake-like fangs smiling. He knew this was a fight so he summoned his unprepared scythe. The girl called for help claiming Moon was a traitor again and all the women that came looks familiar.  "But Sun. Didn't Moon said-" One of girls tried the reason. "She lied to us again." She cut her off. Nightmare felt betrayal, but he doesn't understand why. None of the girls responded and attacked him. One tore his mask and shot him in his missing eye with a arrow.  A mix of magic and weapons overpowered him. He knows he can kill everyone if he takes his gloves, but he made a vow to never used his bare hands. So he decided to do the next self defense.  By placing a cursed on them. One where they are trapped in limbo. He place his scythe on the ground and chant in latin. However the paladin attacked him in the back. He felt his life draining from him as he hears a man scream. "Mi Nina." He shut his eyes for the final time with the feeling of wrath and sorrow.
Nightmare woke up in a cold sweat. As he looked around he saw that the scythe Moon gave him was with breaking. Eventually turning a bit bigger with a moth at the bottom.
What just happened?
He thought. Maybe another vision? He eventually fell back to sleep. He'll think about it in the morning.
~~~~
The autumn harvest festival has arrived and Nightmare put on his more regal garment. Neil was getting a few beers and the townsfolk had forgot he existed.  He was thinking about looking into the lore of the festival until a mysterious stanger showed up wearing strange garments.  She was pretty however.  Skin that was kiss by the sun, flaming hair that's been put up by a high ponytail.  A gold-red mask covering half her face, but not fully her scar.
Tumblr media
The priest was the first to got up to her. "Hello madam." He said.
"Olá" She responded.  "Huh?"
"I said hello in my native tongue." She answered.
"Oh. Anyways  What a pretty thing like you brings in our beautiful village?" He said.
Here he goes again trying to groom someone.
Nightmare thought as he rolled his eyes.  He look at her again and felt off. Like he met her before.
It wasn't long till she spotted him. She walks towards him.  Later squinting her eye. "M-Moonie?" She asked almost crying. Nightmare felt awkward.  "No, I'm Nightmare." He said. She blinked. "Oh my mistake, you just reminded me of an old friend of mine." She said as she walk away whispering "Eu sinto Muito.".
Why do I feel unsafe around her?
Nightmare asked himself.
"You best keep an eye on her." Nightmare heard a familiar voice.  He turned and saw Nox in disguise.
Tumblr media
"What are you doing here?" Nightmare asked. "Errands." Nox reply.
"Hey, Nox can I have a word with you?" Nightmare asked. Nox set the large sack he was carrying down. "What is it?"
"That's scythe Moon gave me.  Is it perhaps any chance curse?"
"What makes you say that?" Nox reply. "Last night I had a dream where I was murdered.  But it wasn't me at all." Nightmare answer. "Maybe the scythe didn't like you." Nox said. Nightmare could feel the jealous aura coming from Nox.
What's make that scythe so important to him?
He thought. "I think there's something that you're not telling me.  In fact ever since we first met I could sense you have some grudge against me and I don't know why." Nightmare said. Nox glared at him than he towered over him getting ready to punch him. Yet he didn't.  Instead he just sighed. "Moon's soul stuck in it. And I don't want anything bad happen to him." Nightmare had seen this behavior before.  In both real life and in his books mostly his romantic novels. "Are you telling me that you're..." Nightmare begin. "No. Not like that." Nox begins to plea. "In love with him?.." Nightmare finished.  He's no love expert, but  He can tell Nox is in love with Moon. Nox blushed a purple hue before covering his face. "Look me and Moon first met we had a rocky beginning.  I was task with killing death by W.D Gaster. I would have succeeded if that man didn't spot me. When we met again  It turns out that both of us aren't so different after all and.." Nox stops himself and put his arm around his chest. "He was the only person I could talk to about these feelings of hate on being born with a uncomfortable body." Even though Nightmare can't understand he felt bad for Nox. "So what do you think about that dream I had? Does it mean something?" Nightmare asked trying to change the subject.  "I don't know myself. And I read all of Moon's books and scrolls." Nox answered. Nightmare watch Nox pack up. "Where are you going?" Nightmare asked. "Home. Hecate freaks out being alone at midnight." Nox replied. Nightmare took a breath.  Then music became louder and more vibrant, with the lights and fire becoming brighter and more warm. He turn and saw the stranger dancing with the strong man. Something doesn't seem right. Usually the strong man would refuse to dance for anyone, but the little girl he was targeting.  And he could've swore he saw scales of a snake on the stranger. The stranger later took the man to a small alley.  Nightmare thought that the man is just showing her around town. So he didn't pay much attention. He decided to try out the bobbing for apples he saw a couple of people did.  He should known better than to trust everyone when they pushed his head into the water. Luckily the little ones are making smores next to its fire they made themselves so maybe he can rest there.  As he headed to the campfire the little boy with the abusive mother grabbed him. "Nightmare, I don't feel comfortable with that girl."
"What girl?" Nightmare asked.
"The girl dancing with my mom." The boy pointed out. Nightmare took a look and saw that the stranger with the boy's mother.
Wasn't she with the strong man?
He thought. He turned to boy. "I'll keep a close eye on them while you have fun with your friends. Alright?" The boy nodded. Nightmare walks towards the dancers, but made sure that both of them can't spot him. He watch as the stranger convinced the abusive mother to go to the alley. Once there the stranger carefully removed the other woman's clothes. Nightmare thought they were going to court with each other so he turned away embarrassed. Even if he wasn't there the two women would eventually be found, and be hanged for committing homosexuality witchcraft. He left to tell the boy he might be getting two moms if they can convince the court. To his surprise the boy didn't pay no mind to it. In fact the boy just ask if it's okay with God. He doesn't know how reply due to him not being religious.  So they change the topic. Eventually Nightmare forgot about the stranger. Later he got tried and decided he had enough partying for tonight. As he went back home he heard a scream next to him. He turn to where the scream was and saw the unimaginable.
Tumblr media
Everyone that danced with the stanger died in pools of blood and a demon snake mantis fire thing licking some from her hands. Nightmare backed away slowly until a woman scream caught the creature's attention. She smile and dash past Nightmare and grabbed the woman and begins to feast on her. By making her paralyze with the vemon in her fangs. Then she gutted her with her teeth. Later riping her limb from limb until she was nothing more than a pool of blood. Worst of all everyone saw it. While Nightmare ran.
Is that a Solarite?
He thought, but someone grabbed him and push him towards her. The Solerite took notice and held him down. Nightmare closed his eyes and hope that the death will be quick, except it never came. Instead she froze in place and is beginning to cry blood. Then stopped. "Você conhece o Nim?" She said.
"W-What?" Nightmare asked. "I said. Do you know Nim? You know that apple tree dryad?" She said.
"Yes. She's my mother." He said. She glared, but not at him. "Essa vadia...I know she would do this. But never to her own son."  She muttered.  "Nightmare, did you summoned this..thing?" A man yelled. "No. I barely even kno-" He was cut off. "As if you weren't evil enough you destroyed a sacred ceremony. " Nightmare look down.
Are they that stupid?
He thought. "Wait, I cause the massacre.  Not him. And how is he a part of it?" The solerite asked. "Didn't he summoned you?" Someone else asked. "No. I came by going on a boat by myself. " She answered.  "Well he bleeds black blood." A woman said. "I have a close friend who bleeds black blood and he would never harm someone unless he has too or is provoked." She replied. The solarite stood up and allowed Nightmare to stand up. Then she put her hand on his shoulder.  Surprisingly it didn't burn him. "Are you a scapegoat?" She asked. Nightmare took a deep breath.  "Yes." She turns to village.  "Raise your hand if you still think he cause the massacre?" Not surprisingly almost all of village raise their hands. "Good thing my pets love barbecues." She whispered. "Now come to me if you think he is innocent." All the children and some of villagers came forward despite their loved ones pleas and threats. She came up to them and pat them all on their heads. Later did the same to Nightmare. "Who are you?" Someone said. The solarite smile. "I am the wrath of life." She said as she turns into a snake and begins slithering away. Many tried catch her, but she was too fast. And those that did hands were burnt to a crisp. Nightmare took the opportunity to run. He went home grabbed Moon's scythe and spent the night at the in-hill. Planning to talk to Moon about her and about that dream.

Ayyyy! Nice reference!
"PLEASE! I'm begging you Muffet! Is this what you want? Well you finally got it. I'm begging. Please for the love of God let me see her. Please God damnit."

In the wise words of Ms. Muffet... “Get up.”
This post contains soft spoilers.

🌍 World building! 🌍
"Mhm… it's all artificial. A marriage of science and magic. Like those stars… not real. They're wishing stones. They're supposed to relay messages, times and dates… but everyone just kind of likes looking at them. Makes the nights down here not so bad, you know?"
Excerpt from 21
Trivia hour:
The fake moon and sun of the Underground was built by Dr. Gaster! Basically, there are these two large lamps that scale a glass dome at the tip top of the hollow mountain. This glass dome also has the "wishing stones" aka the fake stars that blink and relay messages via light morse code. There are entire jobs dedicated to deciphering the messages. It's mostly maintenance, nothing of any political importance.
The faux moon and sun only appear in Snowden and the Capitol. The other districts are pretty submerged in the deep caverns of the underground.
I basically created this system because when I was writing I wanted beautiful sunset imagery because nothing to me is more romantic than sunsets, and I realized— “Oh shit! They're underground!...hmmmm” and then I cracked my writer knuckles and started worldbuilding!
It also paints a clear contrast between the surface and the underground. Frisk herself is in complete awe of the inner mechanics and workings of the Underground, and she is willing to completely start over and a live a life down there. Meanwhile the monsters want... Real sunlight. They want real stars. They want the surface. They want freedom.
Freedom for Frisk is completely different to freedom for the monsters, which will be shown in a future scene.

🥀 Frans 🥀
She couldn't remember who moved first, but one second they had been trapped in a staring contest, the next, she was pressed against him, his teeth biting desperately at her lips. She melted in his embrace, her soul humming with content, as if this was where she was always meant to be.
They staggered back against the counter, and she moaned softly into his mouth as he pressed against her. They couldn't be close enough. They drove each other crazy. She didn't understand the craving they had for each other, but she definitely knew it was there. God, she needed him. For that moment she forgot that she was supposed to be mad.
Excerpt from 31
God. These two can't control themselves when they're around each other and it only gets... worse? Better ( ? ) in part 4. Like seriously guys, they can't get their hands off each other. It's well deserved in my humble opinion. Sometimes I'm a little worried that y'all will get annoyed with how much they kiss but then I'm like “why would they get annoyed??? That's like... The whole reason they're reading this...🥴”
Yeah I read WDYW for the plot.
The plot:
Tumblr media
OOOH, Actually there's a scene in 62 between the two of them that's so sweet. I actually got the inspiration for it when I was rewatching Hunger Games Catching Fire. 😌 (God it's so good)
Also— Oh my God guys... Guys... Chapter 64. They are so powerful. That's all I'mma say. Be looking forward to it. Power couple to the max.
💀 Gasters 💀
ACK I wrote a flashback scene in Papyrus's pov and my girlfriend and I were both like 🥺🥺😭😭 because of how heartbreaking it. Soooo just be prepared for sad skeleton boy hours.
Another thing I want to just kind of joke about is this; how do the skeletons even talk? I like to think I'm at least semi realistic with my portrayal of the skeletons. One day I was literally on a hike and I was mouthing a scene to myself (as one does) and I say the word "bitch" (don't ask) and I suddenly stop and I'm like. “Bitch... Bitch ... Bah...BAH” (say Bitch slowly out loud lol) and I was like "SHIT YOU NEED LIPS TO MAKE THE BAH SOUND!” and I had an existential crisis for like the entire rest of my hike.
Anyway, the Skeleton brothers use magic for everything. That's how the undertale fandom waves away all illogical worldbuilding holes. “Oh? How do the skeletons make the Bah sound without lips? That's easy, ✨ magic ✨ ”
💅🏻 Villains 💅🏻
Ugghhhh MUFFET is diabolical, but in Part 4 she does take a step back because Part 4 is Asgore's time to shine.
"You and your skeletons would do well to remember that this is my kingdom . And if you challenge me in my kingdom, or make promises you can't keep, you will suffer. I'll make sure of it. Keep this in mind Moxie , I like to play with my food."
Excerpt from 40
And BOY does he fulfill his promises. We do get to see more of his interactions with Alphys, which I'm excited to write.
I actually really love writing him. He has this affinity for poetry so any chance I feel that it's appropriate to have a little poem, I write one or I find a famous old poem written by Lewis Carroll or Edgar Allen Poe or something like that. In fact I have it as canon that Asgore would read Asriel a shit load of poems, and their favorite was Lewis Carroll and his nonsense poems like the Jabberwocky.
 Papyrus watched with an unbreaking gaze as Asgore flipped through the pages of a book.
"Ah… here's a good one. Beware the Jabberwock, my son. The jaws that bite, the claws that catch…  beware the jubjub bird and shun the frumious bandersnatch… do you read poetry, Lieutenant?"
Except from 28
That's all I've got for this post! I'll do some more gushing for other asks, but thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to rant about absolutely nothing!

Love Never Sleeps
Note: Thank you for all the notes and support on the last fic. It warms my heart knowing people love reading them. Onto the fic!
Handplates belongs to: @zarla-s
Requested by @randomstuff7739
Summary: Gaster has a lot of work to get done but due to sleep depravity, passes out during an important work report! With no way to wake him up, the Human takes it upon themselves to get his work up to schedule. Will they be able to handle the workload while also looking after the brothers?
    “Yes, Alphys. I am aware of our tight deadline. Some things just came up that interrupted my schedule. No, I’m alright. I’ll get that report finished today, I promise. Yes, send the King my regards.”
     Hanging up the phone, Gaster rubbed his ‘temples’ in irritation. It had been a stressful week, to say the least. He was behind schedule on his work, the Subjects’ tests scores weren’t up-to-date, and now he had to finish up a report for Alphys before the day was over. To say he was tired would be an understatement. Even after a multitude of coffee, he was exhausted and completely drained. Normally he would blame the Human for constantly distracting him, but unlike other times, they were actually being very helpful.
     The Human would bring him coffee whenever they thought he looked tired. They brought him small snacks so he wouldn’t be hungry. It also seemed like they still had access their dimensional box as they were always providing cigarettes as well. The Human would also keep watch over the Subjects so they wouldn’t bother him. Of course, they also tried to get him to take a nap or at least take a break from working.
    “*You tell Gaster he looks tired...”
    “I’m fine, Human...”
    “*You remind him that it’s not healthy to overwork himself.” “*He dismisses your concern.”
    “Human, I can reassure you that I’m...functional.”
    ‘*You honestly doubt that...but there’s not much you can do...”
     Walking to the kitchen, the Human opened the cabinet and got out one of the many gifted mugs they gave Gaster. As they waited for the coffee to brew, they put some candy hearts in a small baggie to give to him as a snack. What he really needed though was some rest. Even though the Human knew he was stubborn already, this was a bit much even for him...or...maybe he always does this. Hopefully, they can convince Gaster to sleep before he inevitably passes out.
      The coffee machine beeped and the Human poured some into the mug. They walked back to Gaster with coffee and treats in hand. He seemed to be still hard at his work. Putting the items on the table, they put a hand on his shoulder.
    “*You tell Gaster he NEEDS to take a break, even if it’s just a small one...”
    “*...”
    ‘*He’s not answering you...you gently shake him.’
    “Zzz...”
    ‘*Oh...he’s asleep.'
     Breathing out a sigh of relief, the Human grabbed a blanket and covered him so he could stay warm. They switched off the light and left the room where the brothers quickly ran up to them.
    “HUMAN, CAN WE EAT NOW?”
    “yea, we’re hungry.”
     The Human smiled and nodded. The three of them headed to kitchen where they made sandwiches for the brothers. As they ate their food, the Human looked up at the clock. Gaster should be well rested now and ready to finish up his work. They told the brothers to stay put and went to wake him up.
     Entering his work room, The Human walked up to Gaster and shook him gently.
    ‘*You try to wake him up...but he still continues to sleep.’
    “Mmm...cigarettes...Zzz...”
    “*You tell Gaster he needs to wake and finish Alphys’ report...still he sleeps.”
    “Zzz...human...why...zzz.”
     They would’ve been happy to hear him talking about them in his sleep if he didn’t have something important to do. The Human continued to call his name over and over hoping that he’d wake up, but Gaster just slept through it. They gave a sigh as they thought about what else they could do. Could they possibly...finish his work for them? It wasn’t that crazy of an idea. Even if they didn’t understand science that well, it wouldn’t hurt to try. Of course, the Human needed to keep track of brothers as well. This was going to be a challenge.
     Reaching over Gaster, the Human picked up his schedule and read over it. It was written in Wingdings but luckily they used what they learned last time and translated it. It was mostly about reports and feeding and testing the brothers, nothing that seemed too hard to do they hoped. Grabbing a pencil and the report paper, they walked out to see what they could get done.
     Sitting down at the table, they looked over the report sheet. He had only written the outline of it, but it looked like he was trying to write about the study of something. Seems like he fell asleep before he could write what the study was about. Well, he did have a lot of strong opinions about humans, so it’s possible that he would want to study them. Mimicking his handwriting as best as they could, they began to writing, mostly from personal experience with Gaster. Just as they finished writing the report, the brothers walked up to them.
    “HEHE! DID YOU KNOW HE WAS ASLEEP IN THERE?”
    “hehe, yea. he also said somethin about you, i think...”
    “YEA, HE WAS. BUT DON’T WORRY! HE ONLY SAID GOOD THINGS!”
    “*You ask them what he said.”
    “umm...i think it was somethin like ‘...so sweet, human.’...but that’s about it.”
    “I HEARD HIM SAY ‘HUMAN...SO SOFT...’. BUT THEN HE GREW QUIET.”
     The Human honestly didn’t know what to say. They were usually the one giving Gaster compliments and it wasn’t exactly like him to say such nice things about them. But considering that he’s revealed other things in his sleep, it’s possible this is just another one of those times. However, the Human also wasn’t used to compliments in general.
    “*You find yourself blushing really hard. The brothers noticed on top of everything...”
    “their face is all red, bro. are they hurt?”
    “OF COURSE NOT! HIS FACE TURNED RED WHENEVER HE’S AROUND THEM...SO THEIR FACE MUST GO RED WHEN HE’S MENTIONED OR AROUND HIM AS WELL.”
    “oh, that makes sense, i guess.”
     The Human quickly got up, picked up the report paper, and walked back to the work desk. They were already embarrassed enough. The paper was placed back on the desk. Picking up the schedule, the Human saw that it was time for the brothers’ tests. They took the brothers to the testing room where they were understandably confused.
    “can’t we take a break today? he’s still sleeping.”
    “*You tell them Gaster’s behind schedule and needs their tests scores.”
     The brothers didn’t understand about the schedule but since the Human was the one doing the tests today, that means it could be fun. They were a bit unsure about what kind of tests to do, but giving them math problems seemed right. After giving each of a couple of math questions, they wrote down the results on Gaster’s clipboard. Now they were stumped on what other tests to do. The brothers could play with the cube but would that really qualify as a test? Well, the Human needed the tests scores so it wouldn’t hurt to let them play with it.
     The Human gave the brothers the cube and wrote down results. They would usually take turns with the color cube though, sometimes they would argue over who’s turn it was to play with it. Getting the tests scores, the Human placed the clipboard back on Gaster’s desks. It was about lunchtime, now so the Human took the brothers into the kitchen to get them something to eat. As they looked over what ingredients he had, Subject 2 began to tug on their shirt.
    “HUMAN, CAN WE HAVE SOME CANDY?”
    “please? we won’t tell him you did.”
    “*You tell them that you’re not allowed to give them sweets.” ‘*They look disappointed.’
    ‘*It wouldn’t hurt to give them one piece...would it?’
    “*You tell the brothers they can have one candy piece each.” ‘*They are delighted.’
     Giving the brothers their candy, the Human found some pasta and began cooking. They boiled the water and placed the noodles in the pot of water. Draining the water, they put a serving of noodles on two plates and carried them to cells for the brothers to eat so they wouldn’t make a mess in the kitchen. Subject 1 & 2 began to gobble down the pasta as the Human watched over them. Suddenly, the workload and stress from today caught up to them, feeling exhausted and out of energy. They tried to keep their eyes opened, but eventually fell asleep.
~~~~~~~
     Gaster blinked himself awake as he let out a groan. It wasn’t long before he suddenly jumped up in a panic and grabbed his papers and bag. He quickly ran out of the Lab, not even bothering to tell the Human and the Subjects.  He must have accidently fallen asleep after finishing the report. No matter, all he needs to do is give it to Alphys and he’ll be up to schedule on everything except the Subjects’ test scores.
(Sometime Later)
     The Human was petting the Subjects when Gaster returned. He looked more collected and well-rested than this morning. It seemed like his meeting with Alphys went well.
    “*You ask him how the meeting went.”
   “Hello, Human. It went relatively well, though I’m wondering if you can answer some questions for me...
    “*???”
    Pulling the paper out his bag. he began reading things they both knew he didn’t write. The Human grew more and more nervous as he continued to read. When he stopped reading, Gaster gave them a stern look.
   “Are you going to waste both of our time by trying to deny this or do I just assume you admit to doing this?”
   “*...”
   “So I’m guessing you chose the latter...am I correct?”
   “*You tell him he is.”
    At least they’re only going to reprimanded for one thing.
   “I also noticed that the Subjects’ tests scores were a bit higher than normal and I don’t remember testing them today...”
    Well, it’s probably not going to be that bad of a lecture...
   “Another thing I noticed is that there two empty candy wrappers in the cell and...”
    This was going to be a very long scolding...
Note: Thank you everyone for the wait and reading this fic and thank you @randomstuff7739 for suggesting this adorable and hilarious prompt. Delta Rune: Addendum
People have asked me if my opinions have shifted at all in light of Toby Fox’s FAQ.
The answer is yes and no.
Also, I’ve gotten a fair amount of...unasked for feedback on my other post, which was mostly just my own musings and opinion? So I might as well just kinda...address a bunch of things here, based on a couple observations over the last 48 hours.
What People Didn’t Like (And Why)
The Repetition of Plot Elements from Undertale in the Dark World
This one’s pretty common, and very justified given that, when the demo first launched, we had no idea that it was a demo. For all we knew, it was some kind of finished product.
Although I didn’t want to believe that this is the case, it’s not uncommon for creators to accidentally fall into a sophomore slump of sorts, where under the pressure of measuring up to their freshman fame, they end up creating something dull and uninspired.
Despite that, there wasn’t any level of self-awareness that indicated that the Dark World was supposed to be a cheaper version of Undertale. And then it ended by falling into the “it was just a dream” trope (not entirely, but close enough), which is one of my least favorite tropes, so I was just turned off altogether.
The Battle System
I didn’t really enjoy the new combat system (that’s definitely a personal thing though...turn-based jrpg games have always been a struggle for me, and I straight up don’t have the time for the strategy that it often takes). That aside, Fox himself admits that the system is rough and really unbalanced.
Also, I get the sense that he wants to bring home that theme of your choices mean nothing, but isn’t exactly sure how to do that yet, which explains a lot of the issues with ACTing in the demo.
Even after he gets it fixed up, I’m not sure I’m really going to enjoy the battle system, although I do commend him for his creativity and the attempt to integrate Undertale’s bullet hell into a turn-based game style.
Underdeveloped Characters
This one I can forgive almost entirely, by nature of it being a demo rather than a finished piece of work. I can relax my criticism of the Dark World NPCs as a result.
That said, I still failed to really feel anything other than aww...cute a couple of times (usually as Ralsei)
Oh, that and a shit ton of existential horror at Undyne and Alphys not knowing each other, the world being generally indifferent to whatever made Susie the way she is, and that everybody is turning a blind eye or actively punishing Asgore for some unknown crime.
But I’ll talk about that a bit more in the next section.
The Vague Relation to Undertale and the Re-Use of Characters
Okay so like. I understand that Toby Fox insists that it’s Not Undertale.
Except that like.
I don’t buy that for a second.
Like, it’s Not Undertale only in the sense that it’s not related to the pacifist ending, but doesn’t disqualify it from being a follow-up to the genocide run (and therefore a direct sequel of sorts).
That aside, if it truly was Not Undertale, then he wouldn’t have named it Delta Rune, brought Gaster into it, and drawn visual and flavor text metaphors to the original game. It’s related, it might be an AU, but that doesn’t make the OOC meanness of the familiar faces easy to swallow.
It could easily interpreted as “unsettling and OOC to show the player that their expectations will be subverted and that there is something Seriously Wrong with this world,” and a lot of people have interpreted it that way! I’m on the fence there myself, but you gotta understand that not everybody shares that interpretation.
For others, including myself to some extent, the message was:
In the absence of dire circumstances, the characters that you were led to believe cared deeply about each other and you, are indifferent, apathetic, and  downright mean.
I mean, even if Kris on their own is a total dick? That doesn’t justify the way that the other characters treat each other.
And that lack of warmth in the story was felt like a gut-punch to a small number of people.
On top of that, the weird twist ending didn’t do much to subvert that message. It gave no sense of whether or not the entire thing indicated a fundamentally sick world, or disprove that sense of they only cared about you and others out of a mutual need.
And if you can put yourself in that mindset, you can understand how that could be painful.
What People Didn’t Like About Me (And Others) Not Liking It
You’re Complaining Because it’s Not Undertale
No, I’m complaining because it’s Too Much Undertale. Because my personal prerogative is that Undertale is perfect the way it is and any additional content would only detract value from the original.
I was sincerely hoping for a totally new game, with maybe cameos or nods to Undertale, because I didn’t want to risk that horrible sequel syndrome.
And while we, as fans, can opt to ignore horrible sequels (see: the entirety of the Harry Potter fandom), at the same time...sometimes you can’t unsee what you’ve seen. Sometimes sequels are enough to mar your affections and feelings for characters, especially because it comes from The Voice of God Dog.
You’re Can’t Complain that Things are OOC When It’s an AU!
-rubs forehead-
Look. I don’t know if you know this, but I adore AUs. Not every AU, of course, but I loved the concept and how the community came together to create some kind of semi-cohesive multiverse.
I mean, I literally drew over 100 different AUs:  SET 1 || SET 2 || SET 3 || SET 4 || SET 5 || SET 6 || SET 7 || SET 8 ||
But there’s a difference between fandom AUs and canon AUs--namely in that fandom AUs can be as out of character as they want, because it’s a fan creation.
There are multiple series that play with that multiverse theory as well, within their own canons, starting with the entire body of Osamu Tezuka, but also including the works of CLAMP (most notably XxxHolic and Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles), Adventure Time, the Final Fantasy series, and so on.
And the key to making an effective multiverse? The thing that makes it work?
Keeping the characters in-character. There has to be that kind of consistency, otherwise it doesn’t function on a narrative level. You’re just reusing character designs and assigning new personalities, because you’re too lazy to design new characters.
Or worse, you’re baiting in previous players on a sense of nostalgia which is a trick I do not appreciate.
You Shouldn’t Rely on Fictional Works to Aid Your Mental Health
Screw you.
Everybody has Real Issues in their lives. Sometimes we need a hand from something or somebody else to keep moving.
Fine, But There’s No Reason To Be Publicly Upset by DR
It’s okay to dislike additional material, for whatever reason, so long as you’re not attacking others for liking it. It’s okay to be upset by something, even if it’s not rational, and you don’t need to force others to like what you like, nor should you feel guilty that somebody else doesn’t ‘get it.’
Will You Play Chapter 2?
I will purchase it to support Toby Fox on his endeavors.
But you gotta understand, I straight up don’t play video games most of the time. Don’t have the time or the energy.
I only played Undertale after I’d had the whole thing spoiled to me, and knew it was worth the investment of my time. I should’ve waited on this one too, but I was too eager, and instead lost 4-5 hours of critical time for my graduate coursework (which definitely contributed to my annoyance).
TL;DR
You guys realize it’s okay for people to dislike deltarune? It’s okay for them to have been hurt by the characterization in deltarune? And people don’t have to write an essay in order to hold those opinions?
And that you don’t have to aggressively convert people to it like you’re some kind of church missionaries?
-sighs- At any rate, beginning to feel a bit more optimistic overall, and after that interview I can feel Toby Fox’s enthusiasm (he had something cool and he couldn’t wait to show it off!!), and I can get excited for him and others, even if as a whole the entire game experience fell flat.
Some day, I might even warm up to the game well enough to draw some stuff some time. I’ve got some fun ideas and theories, but still refuse to be hopeful that it’ll actually shape up.
Because I am made of salt.
. OUT            since my brain would rather i just.... talk about sans than actually do my drafts, here’s more thoughts. he’s.... not really a tragic character. which like, is pretty intuitive (you’d think) but what i really appreciate about sans is that yeah he hasn’t had a perfect life, things have been and continue to be kinda tough, but it’s never been a total nightmare. yes -- losing gaster at a young age was hard, as was having to take over responsibility of papyrus. his backstory isn’t a total sob story. he IS a chill guy with a good sense of humor and a solid set of social skills. and YET, he does suffer from depression and what i would label as executive dysfunction -- but, it doesn’t take over his life. it’s just putting a lens over his view of the world. mix that in with some good old nihilism (that really only comes into play later in his life when he learns about resets and timelines), and you have a pretty good idea of what he’s like. right?                     well, mostly. there’s also the side of sans that i feel often gets overlooked (or at least, doesn’t factor into the largest fandom portrayals and stereotypes), and that’s his actually rather gentle and caring nature. it doesn’t manifest in the same way toriel’s does, or even papyrus. sans goes from darkly serious to downright immature, and we know he can be relentless and brutal when push comes to shove. but he also has this huge heart and so much love to give. looking only at canon, he shows obvious care and concern for papyrus’ happiness and wellbeing -- from the battle body, to the praise for his brother he relays to frisk, to the bedtime story, and the simple fact that he encourages him to pursue his dreams while taking on multiple jobs just to pay the rent -- there’s simply no arguing the fact that sans loves papyrus more than anything else in the world, and he’ll go to great lengths for him.
          (this is really long, so click below to read the rest if you want)
          continuing to talk about canon relations, next up is frisk and toriel. these two are tied into each other for obvious reasons. soriel shipper or not, sans cares a lot about toriel and values her opinion and her wishes highly. i’ve written a LOT about this before so i’m not going to rehash it here, but the tl;dr version is that she’s been a good and important friend to him, he’s obviously shared personal stuff with her, and to the point where when she asks him to protect humans, he does so -- not just NOT doing his job, but actively working against it. he can say he “doesn’t care” about capturing a human all he wants, but i have a high suspicion that it’s just an excuse. and i mean, come on. in that neutral ending where they become roommates? tell me he doesn’t care about her. and that brings us to frisk. he starts out looking out for them because he promised toriel, but i really believe that he grows attached of his own accord. they’re nice, they’re nice to papyrus, they’re brave, and honestly, i think he genuinely cares a lot about them. all the jokes, the pranks, especially the grillby’s scene and the hot dog stand in waterfall -- you do that kinda thing with your friends, people you like. hard stop.
              but okay, moving onto specifics of my portrayal and things that aren’t rooted in canon at all. every human interaction he has?? in my timeline, they all happen after he meets toriel (including a majority of the original six), so there’s an obligation to look out for them, but he genuinely loves them all. especially the little kids. he really really loves kids, even if he’s not the best at talking to them, he tries real hard. it kills him to know that they’re going to move on and eventually die -- he does his best to protect them through snowdin, but he can’t do much beyond that, and sometimes even his protection isn’t enough. and it HURTS. i also headcanon that he kills at least one of them himself (which one it is varies and is based on a lot of different factors -- sometimes it’s a mercy kill to keep them from asgore, and sometimes it’s to stop a killer). and y’all, he hates that. he hates it so much. it’s part of the reason i think he won’t fight frisk except in genocide, even if they have killed papyrus (although i do have my problems with that). he’s killed once before and it was the hardest thing he ever had to do.
             and even his friends. he doesn’t make enemies. people make enemies of him, and he follows suit. but he starts out cheerful and warm to everyone he meets, until they’ve proven they’re not interested in friendship. which is.... how he has so many friends. he’s not abrasive about it like papyrus is, he has good social skills and is incredibly laid back, and it shows. and if you’re his friend? he’ll do just about anything for you. he’ll offer up his couch if you need somewhere to stay. he’ll treat you to lunch despite not having the gold to pay the rent for the month. he’ll cheer you up with a joke when you’re feeling down, or sit and curse the world with you if that’s what you’d prefer. sans isn’t happy most of the time, but much like papyrus, he wants everyone else to be. part of that is his own lack of self-worth -- he considers himself less important than the people around him.
              and honestly yeah, he bottles up his emotions most of the time, and acts like he doesn’t have a care in the world. it’s a coping mechanism for the things that do bother him. he acts like he doesn’t need anything or anyone except a bottle of ketchup and his brother, but that’s just untrue. he wants friends, he wants affection -- his whole life has revolved around papyrus solely up to a point, and the only affection he’s really gotten has been from him too. which is why i think that in cases where sans has a very close friend or a romantic partner, he’s very tactile and physically clingy. despite many emotional roadblocks, his ability to show love or care for the people important to him is NOT one of them. that’s probably one of his greatest strengths, actually. it’s the one emotion he actually lets himself feel because it doesn’t hinder his ability to do work or maintain his cool outward appearance. there’s nothing wrong with showing people you care about them.
Prediction for Deltarune Chapters 2-7
 -Spoilers under the cut-
Chapter 2:A fourth player joins the team but it’s not Noelle, it’s Jockington (A Gunner) who only needed to get a pencil. There’s a second fountain in need of closing and Ralsei is concerned about the fourth member. Kris is still mostly sane at this point. Lancer returns but this time as a good guy and this time they fight in a town full of stuffed animals. They seal the fountain and the three return to the outside world. After defeating the boss of this world, Susie also shows Kris that she did her work some point in the chapter and Kris says that they’re starting theirs. Jockington makes a joke about how they might be a thing which Susie gets all angry at. Kris then goes home, learns omnisans secret, and works on the project for a little bit, tearing their soul out and mentioning that “you are not in control of me.” Chapter 3:Susie and Kris go to China town, literally, unaware that they’re getting followed by Catti (summoner). She was curious why Kris and Susie had been skipping class lately. She says she’s gonna tell Alphys about their behavior unless they tell the truth. When she tries activating her phone though, there’s no wi fi so she’s forced to play protagonist number 5 until the final boss. During their time Susie asks Catti if she and Jokcingotn are dating to which she replies,  with a maybe. Kris dosen’t like this and demands a yes or no answer. Ralsei reminds Kris that they are on borrowed time and that now isn’t the right place to fight. Upon returning to the light world, Susie notices a black spot on the wall but thinks nothing of it. Kris shows Susie the progress that they made in their project and as a reward Susie decides to award them by letting them see their home. During their trip to her house Asriel calls saying “Hey Kris! I’m gonna be coming home on Sunday!” Kris starts to cry at this statement.
Chapter 4:You want Noelle to be a protagonist now don’t you? Well here’s the Healer Noelle chapter you wanted. Alphys says that due to something happening the supplies cabinet is locked up. Susie is angry at this and demands Alphys opens it up but is persuaded other wise when Kris says “DO NOT OPEN IT, OR WE DON’T KNOW WHAT WILL BE UNLEASHED.” So Susie and Kris decide to just skip the darker world today until Noelle joins them and says that her dad needs help at the hospital. They fall down a medicine cabnet and find medicine monsters. Ralsei says that there’s no fountain here but understands that Neolle’s father is probably in need of the medicine so he helps. Through out the Chapter it’s obvious that Kris’ is acting...weird. Their soul isn’t there and you seem to lose control of them at times. While Ralsei finds this odd Susie is enjoying this and Noelle, being used to their bullcrap, ignores this. There’s also also a love confession scene with Noelle and Susie...which sadly does not go well, not matter what you do. After finding the medicine Noelle is depressed and decides that it would be best if she walked home alone. Susie thinks that she was kinda harsh and her and decides to make it up tomorrow. Kris is left alone to walk from home to here. It’s there they meet Sans, who has had his eye on them ever since they laid eyes. They talk about their natural distrust towards one another which is soon interrupted by Papyrus offering ravioli. DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUUUN. Also there’s a black puddle on the way back home and Toriel seems to be a bit unwell, BUT RAVIOLI INSTEAD OF SPAGETHI IS THE MAIN THING
Chapter 5:Berdly (inventor) is the last one to join team KSR. Ralsei, being Ralsei, tries to tolerate him but it’s very hard to when he keeps brining up science stuff. What makes matters worse is that they’re in the science lab. Susie thinks about how she’ll make things up with Noelle and she’s a lot more nervous then usual. Kris is still like they are in Chapter 4. Ralsei says that there’s one more fountain to be closed but up next is the strongest enemy they’ve faced so far so he’s glad that he brought Lancer along for the ride. Oh Lancer is there as well BTW, it’s 5 vs ? during most of the battles, except the ones in a specific part which is only Susie and Kris. After defeating the boss Ralsei warns Kris that even though all the fountains are sealed, there’s still danger. For the knight still walks alone and the angel is yet to be seen. Upon returning to the light world Berldy realizes how much of class he misses and hopes he can make it up. Susie talks to Noelle about what happened last night in the dark world and you don’t get to see if they make up or not. Upon the walk home, there’s a lot of worry and panic throughout the town. More and more people start talking about a mysterious dark spots in the town. Alphys reports to a local police lady that the world as we know it is going to end and Undyne gives her a big hug. Napstablook, chief police, says he’ll do investigating but when he steps over the puddle something interesting happens. The police hat he’s wearing turns into headphones. And when Kris steps over it they turn into their darkener self. The chapter ends with Kris threatening to stab the soul... Chapter 6:...But that doesn’t happen thanks to a restraint from Toriel. The town is in a panic. There are no visits to the dark world today. Kris calls Asriel who still says that he's coming over which is the only good news Kris head. No one is happy, well except Susie, who for once in her life time feels as though there’s nothing to worry about she’s got her side of the project done and Kris is almost done with theirs so they should be good. It’s at this moment the other classmates appear and talk to Susie and Kris about their adventures in the dark world and explain that Ralsei might have been twisting the truth a little bit in his prophecy. Berdly states that, upon doing some research, there was only supposed to be two heroes, a human and a monster and that if they were to seal these fountains the sky would turn black. Susie gets angry all of the sudden and demands that they find Ralsei and have him explain his actions at once. Kris though pulls the dagger out of their pocket and says otherwise and “you’ll have to get through me first, Suzy.” You play as the five other students in their regular forms and although they don’t have Kris’ dagger or abilities they had in the dark they do have their natural abilities. Susie asks what they hell that was about and Kris explains that they are not who is in control at all times sometimes -your vessel name here- takes over. It’s then your vessels pops out of your soul and reveals it’s form that you did. It doesn’t say anything and simply disappears. Suddenly Kris feels in control of their body again and lets go of the knife. Right now they’ve got one more thing to do, find Ralsei and the knight. First things first, Ralsei. After fighting tons and tons of bad guys, the six eventually find him near a forest and they ask him what Ralsei really wanted. “It’s quite simple really,” says the dark prince “I wanted you to be fooled by an innocent look.” In reality he was the angel that was to bring chaos to this land and before you know it, new home is covered in darkness. Everyone is scared now. People don’t know what to do and thus the gang has to fight him. Thankfully, he gave them their powers back. But first, the monsters must find the knight. Chapter 7:Leaving Kris behind they reunite with Lancer and decide to add him to the party one last time meaning it’s basically 6 against 1 and 8 if they can get the knight to side with them. It takes a little why but they do find out who created the Dark World at least “Dr.Gaster” whose from a parralel universe known as Undertale, which he can no longer return too. So he created this universe in his image with a few familiar faces and some new. However it seems that there was an error in his makings or something. The knight appears and fights Dr.Gaster, no matter how good of a fighter you are the knight will grab his soul and run off with it. However don’t lose hope. For with his soul came a hint to the knight’s location. Once they find the knight he asks “where is Kris?” they refuse to tell them their location and get into a fight. The fight is rigged for him to lose no matter what you do. He surrenders but still wants to know where Kris is, for only he and Kris can stop Ralsei. Ultimately they cooperate and each one goes and fights a boss from the world they appeared in but not by themselves. Susie gets help from MK, Temmie Alphys, and Snowy. Jockington gets help from Alvin, Mettaton, Napstablook & Undyne. Catty, Bratty, the blue bunny and Burgerpants help out Catti. Sans, Papyrus, and Rudolph help Noelle and Berdly. Finally Susie and Lancer get help from the Dreemurs and Gaster. Kris and the Knight have to fight the second boss before Ralsei before they can reach him. After that they reach Ralsei once and fight him in his new found angelic form. ZUN helps compose the music for the final boss themes and in order to defeat him you’re gonna need a lot of time to get him. There’s 3 phases, one of him saying that balance needs not be restored and that your’e the ones restoring the balance. The second is of him showing him the true demon behind the angel wings and with wings of familiar colors appear. Scars, injuries and a destroyed kingdom are all explained through this phase. Eventually it seems like the Kris is about to give up but then phase 3 happens with the most unexpected twist. “...No you can’t die now Kris.” he says “And why not?” they ask.
“...Because I haven’t even got you hot choclate yet.” After defeating the demon Ralsei once and for all the truth is explained to Kris. Asriel’s college is were he studies parallel worlds or something like that and the dark world here was a parallel version fo the light world. However Ralsei was sick and tired of balance all the time, he wanted chaos and disorder so he went and did just that. He eventually gets arrested and light and dark is restored again with hometown being a mix of light and dark. Ralsei is jail mates with King Chaos and Lancer transfers schools to go with Susie. She doesn’t get together with Noelle, but she’s moved on to a girl that she meet in the darker world. Undyne and Alphys get together. Omnisan finally tells us their secret. The dog finishes his game. Kris and Asriel go get that hot choclate and life returns  to usual. With Kris pulling out the soul again, but more gently...and setting it down in the cage saying “thank you.”
Underfell: File Name not Edgy Enough #15
Chapter 15: Black
WARNING: I WANT NO RESPONSIBILITY OVER SPOILING THINGS FOR OTHERS. THAT BEING SAID, THIS IS HOW FILE NAME NOT FOUND WOULD FUNCTION IN THE AU OF UNDERFELL. BEFORE YOU READ THIS, UNLIKE THE NICE TIME OF UNDERTALE, THIS WORLD IS KILL OR BE KILLED. THIS STORY WILL BE GRAPHIC, GORY, USE SWEARS LIKE NOBODY'S BUSINESS, AND DEAL WITH SENSITIVE SUBJECT MATTERS. FOR EXAMPLE, THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE READ THE FILE NAME RELOCATED SPOOF WILL KNOW HOW I PICTURE THIS VERSION OF LYNSIE COMING TO THE UNDERGROUND. IT IS NOT AN ACCIDENT. IT IS NOT BECAUSE OF SOMETHING DUMB. IT IS BECAUSE SHE CHOOSES TO END HER LIFE. SO TAKE THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT. I MADE IT BECAUSE I NEEDED TO LET SOME OF THIS EDGINESS OUT OF MYSELF. WHICH I GUESS MAKES UNDERFELL LYNSIE EVEN MORE TRUE TO WHO I REALLY AM. ANYWAY, ENJOY. ^_^
There's a lot of yelling after that stunt Mettaton did. Mostly from Papyrus. Sans just shouts over his brother when possible. I had no voice in the matter. Too spooked to speak really. I was just frozen on the couch for the longest time while the sound of my own heart pounded in my ears.
"I KNEW IT! I KNEW THIS WAS A STUPID IDEA FROM THE VERY START! HOW THE HELL DID YOU TALK ME INTO THIS MESS?!"
"calm down."
"CALM DOWN?! HOW THE FUCK DO YOU EXPECT ME TO CALM DOWN?! THE UNDERGROUND KNOWS NOW THAT THERE'S A HUMAN RUNNING AROUND! HELL, THAT BUCKET OF BOLTS GAVE ENOUGH CLUES TO HAVE PEOPLE LOOKING FOR HER HERE!"
"and how do ya figure that?"
"HE SAID SHE WAS IN A TOWN, SANS. JUST HOW MANY TOWNS DO YOU KNOW OF IN THE UNDERGROUND? WE LITERALLY LIVE IN A PLACE WITH TOWN IN THE NAME! NOT TO MENTION IF ANY OF THOSE DRUNKS AT THE BAR SAW THE SHOW AND RECOGNISE HER VOICE AND RECALL HOW WE ASSOCIATE WITH HER...MY GOD..."
"to be fair, most people in town know we have the human already. they just don't know what a human looks like."
"BUT OUTSIDERS DIDN'T KNOW. NOW UNDYNE AND THE KING SURELY WILL WANT TO HAVE HER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THIS WHOLE MESS IS ONE BIG SHIT STORM...HOW DOES HE EVEN KNOW ABOUT THE HUMAN?! SHE'S NEVER LEFT OUR DISTRICT!"
"yeah, a funny story about that. remember that machine we used in the multicolored tile puzzle?"
"THE ONE WE GOT FROM ALPHYS? WHAT ABOUT IT?"
"see...that hunk of junk was actually mettaton."
"..."
"bro?"
"ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!"
"i wish. the quack confirmed it herself."
"UN-FUCKING-BELIEVABLE."
"i know this seems bad..."
"BAD IS A MASSIVE UNDERSTATEMENT. WE ARE TRAPPED IN A PARADOX. ON ONE SIDE, WE MUST OBEY THE KING AND TURN OVER THE HUMAN SO WE ALL CAN BE FREE. AND YET, WE ALSO HAVE TO OBEY THE QUEEN AND SHE DOESN'T WANT HARM DONE TO THE HUMAN. THERE'S NO WINNING HERE AND OUR LIVES ARE ON THE LINE. AND FOR WHAT? FOR HER? SHE'S NOT WORTH DYING OVER!"
"pap, come on, she's right there."
"I DON'T CARE! GET HER OUT OF HERE! I DON'T WANT TO SEE HER. I DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHERE SHE IS. I WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS ANYMORE, SANS. I'M DONE. DO YOU HEAR ME, HUMAN? THIS IS OVER. NEXT TIME WE MEET, I WILL KILL YOU."
Things kind of fog in my head when those words and everything else keeps repeating to me. Sans isn't given many options at this point. For the meantime, he removes all traces of me from the house and all that is me is now in the shed, me included along with Flowey. Vaguely I recall Flowey asking Sans if we'll be able to at least get back to the Ruins. He didn't give an answer. Merely leaving a plate of food without a word being spoken. This is how it's been now for a couple of hours. Me, staring at a now empty plate and holding Flowey's pot to my chest to keep his soil warm while I sit on the small pet bed.
"We're not going back to the Ruins, are we?"
Flowey asks and I just tighten my hold on him. I'm not in a mood for talking.
"You're probably right. Now's not the best time. Who knows how many are out looking for you."
I shiver.
"Sorry. I didn't mean to..."
"Cold."
Flowey looks around, the shed isn't that bad for its piss poor condition but the broken windows do let the chill air in. He hadn't really noticed since I'm using my body to warm his soil.
"Will you be okay through the night?"
I nod.
"You sure?"
I nod again and he pouts.
"You know, it would help if you'd talk to me. Even if it's something silly."
I close my eyes.
"Hey! Don't ignore me!"
"I'm not."
"Then what are you doing?"
"Thinking warm thoughts."
"Oh."
I'll try in the early morning to run for help. Hopefully, no one will be awake at, let's say, 5 am, except Papyrus maybe. The way back to the Ruins from here isn't long, but it is tedious and I'll need to try out being stealthy more to avoid monsters looking to nab a human. It's a bit of a shame that there's such a huge gap between here and any place I can say is safe. I mean, I want to trust that Grillby's would be a safe place to duck into if shit hits the fan, yet I can't say for sure that's the case. Even if Grillby likes me, I'd be a fool to think he'd really turn his back on his race by harboring me. The smallest crime is met with massive ramifications in this world. Even if he would, I could never live with myself if he was caught and held in this court's version of retribution. He's been so kind to me. I won't betray that kindness with his extinguishing execution. Argh...Why did I leave the Ruins? I didn't have to just to see Napstablook. Was it my curiosity? I always heard it can kill. What I wouldn't give to be back with Toriel right now. Just listening to her read from one of her random books as I lay beside the fire all cozy and Flowey hums softly to himself, maybe Chara would pop in to chat. Yeah...That would be heaven right now. All nice and safe, kept warm by the heat of the hearth in our home sweet home as I lose my senses watching the flickering of the flames dance with the embers like graceful lovers.
Pussycat~
Something inside my soul has me hearing Grillby's voice like a whispering burn.
Pussycat~
I start to feel warmer as if the man of flame were here with me. I can imagine it now. He and I sitting here, him at my back with his arms over mine. Him constantly teasing that pet name in my ear just to rile me up for his amusement and me not caring because his company is worth the minor annoyance.
Pussycat~
Yeah, yeah, you really get a kick out of calling me that.
You know you like it.
Maybe.
You know you like me too.
Don't be a fool, ya goof. Of course I like you.
No, that's not what I meant.
What are you insinuating?
Search your feelings, you know the answer.
This is a weird conversation to be having with basically myself.
Who says I'm just a voice in your head? Maybe I am, maybe I'm not. Or maybe, I'm closer than you think. Maybe I'm right in...here.
I feel something ignite my soul and my eyes shoot open in shock. The suddenness gets Flowey's attention.
"Everything okay?"
Images flash before my eyes. Images I forgot about. It comes flooding back to me and I scream internally as it didn't take much for the spell of alcohol to be broken.
"Whoa...Your face is really red. You're not getting sick, are you?"
I shake my head and curl myself into a ball around his pot.
"Are you sure? You feel really warm."
"I'm fine. Just tired."
"But..."
"Please...Just...Get some sleep. We leave in the morning."
He doesn't like it when I get like this. I don't like it either. But he also knows that when I get like this, I tend to keep to myself until I, and only I, feel ready.
"Okay. But if you want to talk, you know I'm here."
I nuzzle him so he'll relax and I think it works for now. I just hope that when we wake up things will be better...also, I really hope I don't dream about Grillby again. I really don't want to freak Flowey out with that crazy Pink Soul. Lord knows I don't want to feel that surge again. I just want this to be normal. Please? Just one normal night's sleep. Is that too much to ask?
In the house beside the shed, someone else was having issues of their own. While Papyrus didn't seem to be bothered by the recent events other than he was involved, Sans felt the tug of convictions in conflict. On the one hand, as a monster of the Royal Guard and loyal to his King, he knew it was in his best interest to turn the human over to the crown so that the race my once more walk under an open sky. Yet, on the other hand, he is also a man of loyalty and his Queen/friend had him make a promise, yet Sans is many things but an oathbreaker is not one of them. Not to mention in his late-night chat with this human, he had come to realize that she was far different from that of Frisk.
While in some of their encounters Frisk would mention Chara or Gaster, it was never to the extent Lynsie talked about. Hell, she had bruising from a guy that isn't even on this level of existence. What the fuck is with that? Was she just unlucky? Was it something about her in general like that glitchy thing or her strange soul? Or maybe it's something weird in her humanity? Probably wouldn't hurt to read some of those books he and Papyrus got. Who knows, he might learn a thing or two that could come in handy when dealing with her. Not like he learned anything much in his time working alongside Gaster and Alphys all those years ago. Humans usually met with quick demises when spotted and the most the scientists were able to study were the souls left behind. For some morbid reason, the King would always take the bodies away and as you can guess that makes it hard to study human biology. But that's where the books come in. How kind of the humans to write out informative novels on how they function and then chuck them into the hell of the Underground. That's like a robot pointing out where it's batteries are located. Very stupid.
Speaking of robots, he was regretting that moment in time where he stopped Papyrus from smashing that machine. Fucking Mettaton and his blabbermouth. They had a pretty sweet thing going on until he had to ruin it with that stunt. Now the town is going to lose its mind looking for her, probably thinking a reward will come for doing so. If something happens, he'll have to change how he handles confronting her so other won't think he's sided with humans. The last thing he needs is another reason to have a target on his back. By looking at him, most write Sans off as weak and easy EXP. They are wrong. Even if he has only 1 HP and an LV of only 1, Sans is a monster not to be trifled with. With his skills alone, he has made higher LV leveled monster turn tail in shame. Still, there are the few fools that dare try to tangle with him. Most of them don't get the chance to know his power because of Papyrus and to a degree he's thankful for that. Yet he hates when Papyrus deals with these attackers. For it was one such attack that Papyrus gained his first EXP and his taste for slaughter began, turning his brother from the kind person he grew up with into the cold-hearted asshole that he is now. Sans has lived with the guilt of that ever since. Though tonight, if only for a little while, he managed to get a small glimpse of his brother's old self. The human was to thank for that. That girl...He'd swear she had a split personality. One moment she'll piss Papyrus off to the point of violence and the next moment she's kissing up to him to where he's calm as can be. She is a strange one, that Lynsie. So yeah, maybe one of these books will help him get a better understanding on what makes her tick. Here's hoping they're not all full of gross human facts. Let's see...Psychology For Idiots: How Everything Somehow Is About Sex. ...God damn it. Needless to say, he threw the book into the corner when it began insinuating incest.
[Time passes]
"*whisper*...Wake...up...Hey...Lynsie...Come on...Wake up..."
{Wake up, idiot!}
Flowey's muffled voice barely stirred me, but Chara shouting in my head is something very clear. My eyes strain open as shadow moves across the floor. This instantly alerts my senses and I don't like it.
"*whisper* What's happening, bro?"
"*whisper* I woke up because I heard something outside. Then I saw someone looking in the window."
I snort softly.
"*whisper* Great...Nothing beats starting the day with some fucked up shit."
"Human! We know you're in there! Come out and face death!"
I am not in a mood for this and I can sense nothing good will come from this point.
"Piss off!"
"*whisper* That's not going to help you know."
A blade stabs into one of the walls.
"Come out! Or we will make you!"
Well, that's cliché as hell. I take a quick look around and note the few broken floorboards. They'll do nicely.
"Flowey, do you think you can travel in cold ground?"
He looks at me funny.
"I guess?"
"Good."
"Wait, what are you planning?"
I bring us over to one of these messed up floorboards as those on the outside begin pounding on the shed. With the heel of my foot, I stomp into the edges of the splintering board and break off more to show the non-snowy dirt below us.
"I need you to be brave, bro."
"Lynsie?"
I claw out a hole before scooping Flowey out of his pot to now fill the spot.
"I need you to be strong. Bad stuff is about to happen. Bad stuff that might make that darkness in my soul come out..."
His face scrunches in worry.
"So in case that happens, if I lose myself to that blackness...I'm counting on you to get someone we trust. I don't care who. Mom, Sans, Papyrus...Anyone we know will do. I'd ask you to be the one, but I don't wish to put you through what might happen. Can you do this mission for me?"
I can see the fight in his eyes. He doesn't want to leave me. But he doesn't have a choice. Especially when a freaking molotov cocktail comes shattering through one of the windows. Sans and Papyrus are going to be pissed that some assholes are burning their shed down.
"You have to go!"
"I can't just leave you here!"
"Asriel, please!"
I've never said his name before. I didn't want to use it until I felt we had bonded more, like what Chara would tell me about. But I had to. I had to use it to drive this urgency to its point. And he gets it, though the reluctance remains on his face.
"I'll come back for you."
I smile and stroke his petals.
"I know. Be safe, brother."
"Okay...You too."
He struggles a bit to sink his roots in but he soon leaves and I grab my bag before the flames try to take that from me. I'm grateful to the fact I can open the bars, gotta thanks Sans later for showing me that, otherwise I'm fairly certain the fire would get me. I know this is going to be bad, I just know it. So it's no surprise that when I flee the burning shed that I'm almost immediately attacked. Sucker punched hard enough to knock me into the snow. Suddenly the fire feels like it was the safer option.
"I think you need to understand a few things about our little town..."
A large brown bear in a red jacket with black sleeve lines and zipper stands as the leader of this group of four monsters that are assaulting me. The others are smaller than the brown blue bear in a red sweater with black lining, a pink mouse in an overly long read and black scarf with matching puffball cap, lastly is this weird thing that looks like a grinning red devil/demon in black under its wing cowl.
"The way our society works is very simple as far as politics go. There are no mayors or governors over each territory of the Underground. We all are ruled by our monarch, and his Royal Guard enforces his laws. Around here if there's ever a problem, a skeleton will tell a fish lady about it. But here's the thing...What if that skeleton isn't doing his job and allowing something like, oh I don't know...a Human...to go about on its own will and endanger the public? Why that would be quite criminal, to say the least. Wouldn't you agree?"
Dear god this guy never shuts up. In the time he's taken to monologue, I got up and dusted the snow off while thinking of several ways to get out of this.
"Dude, as much as I'm a fan of the whole bad guy needs to rant cliché. But you do realize how pointless it is to waste time chatting me up, right? And I know it's counterproductive on my end telling you this...But you could've killed me by now."
The mouse sighs.
"I told you this was stupid."
The blue bear groans.
"This is not stupid. It's a tradition. And tradition isn't stupid."
The red demon, who is the closest to me, looms just over my shoulder and bares his teeth in his grin.
"I say we compromise. We continue with the plan but do it at the same time as killing her."
I point to this devil and smirk.
"Now this guy has the right idea."
{What the hell are you doing?}
Chara's voice rings true and I shake my dumb helpfulness off. Now isn't the time to be pointing out flaws in how to properly kill me.
"On second thought, go on. Give me the speech. I wanna hear how I fucked up and how you're going to give me my comeuppance."
The brown bear rubs his face as he steps closer, dude is much bigger than me but still small compared to Toriel.
"I really don't get it. I've seen you around a few times, we all have, and I just don't understand."
Don't ask him what.
"What?"
Damn it! At least the fire isn't so bad. The snow melting on it is almost enough in mass and speed to put it out, but not quite enough to fully do the job.
"Why haven't you hurt anyone?"
I blink a few times and tilt my head in confusion. This doesn't go over with the bear. He snarls and grabs my face.
"Don't play with me, bitch! We know what you are! Humans kill monsters! What sort of sick game are you pulling by acting like you're one of us!"
I bite his hand...eh...paw? Whatever his grabbing appendage is called, I bite it and he releases in pain.
"If you think I'm acting, then you're a fool."
The red devil grabs my arm and hurls me into a nearby tree. The mouse, I feel sorry for, because it tries being tough by going for my legs, but I accidentally kick it away in the face. This is when blue bear begins hitting me and red demon joins in. All while brown bear watches with annoyance and pink mouse tries to make the world stop spinning.
"Remember boys, we're not to kill her. We'll be rewarded more if Asgore gets her alive."
The pummeling is not good on my end. I try to fend some of the blows off, but there's only so much I can do. Blue bear hits harder than red devil yet he's more precise in the attack, striking at points that can probably cripple me if he was a bit stronger. All the commotion, of course, draws attention. Monsters in town only come as close as the skeleton household and watch on with a strange mixture of reactions. Most are thrilled to see the beat down, the fact it's on a human is a bonus, yet for the few that do know me from the bar...they are a tad more conflicted.
"What's wrong, human? Why aren't you fighting back? Do you want to die?"
{I hate to agree, but they make a point. You need to fight back.}
You think I haven't been trying?! I can't make one move without getting hit twice. And even if I do fight back, I can't even fight for real because I don't want to hurt anyone.
{But if you don't, then something might...}
*Crack*
[HP ████████████████████ 20/36]
The sound almost echoes and is followed by my roar of pain. I'm a tad surprised when the hits stop. Then again, probably seeing what we do see would do that. Blue bear had stomped on my left arm and the bone couldn't take it, snapping the radius to make part of it pierce outward like spikes. This is on a new level of pain that rivals the stabbing Papyrus has done. I hold the bloody limb into the snow and trying to numb it with the cold. My watering eyes aren't helping me see what's going on.
"Will you look at that. Heh...No wonder those boneheads didn't turn her over. This human's got a skeleton inside her."
"I'd bet gold that they were using her for their own fun."
"Can't say I blame them. I'd do the same too if there were no more of my kind."
"Greedy bastards. Leaving us all trapped down here just so they can fuck some human whore."
I glare at the watery blurs that they are in my eyes.
"Awww...Ain't that cute? She's offended."
"What's the matter, whore? Mouth too full to talk?"
"I say we have a little fun of our own."
"Yeah! Those pricks owe us for withholding her."
Now, I don't know fear very well. Gaster was the one that truly scared me for the first time. Not even these threats scare me, I've heard them before in middle school. But this is different. These aren't humans that can be intimidated. These aren't humans that I can handle on my own. These are monsters that are stronger than me. These are monsters that have already proven that they don't care what they do so long as they get what they want. I don't know fear. But I do know fright. And right now...I'm scared.
"Come on, whore. Bring out your soul."
I don't like this.
"Yeah, if you do us right, we might just show you mercy."
I'm scared.
"I bet fucking a human feels amazing."
Make this stop.
"As the leader, I get first dibs."
Make it stop!
Suddenly, I hear the loud thumping of my heart and a familiar pain shoots through my veins. The air stills, the temperature drops, and I know what's about to happen but I don't have the strength to fight it. In an instant, the world goes dark for me and my body slumps over in the snow like I'm dead with my eyes open. The three big ones are too busy fighting over who really gets first dibs to notice this or the pink mouse approach my body. He just looks at me. Snapping his fingers as if to get my attention yet lifeless I lay. He does however become confused when the whites of my eyes begin to darken into black.
"Hey, guys? I think something is *squeak*...!"
The mouse's sudden cry get their attention but they weren't expecting what they end up seeing. The mouse is dangling by the throat in my good right hand and is struggling to breathe. All of a sudden, there's a small popping sound and mouse goes slack before fading away into dust. Their eyes widen as my body rises unnaturally from the ground and I grin maliciously at their now freaked out faces.
"*growls* You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?"
This was not going to end well.
[Meanwhile: Snowdin Forest]
Boredom once more claimed the skeleton known as Sans. It had gotten to the point where he was flipping through some old magazines he keeps under his post and snacking on hotdogs even though he wasn't hungry. He has looked over these same pages over and over. A few decent articles and comics, but nothing really all that special. Yet anything was better than those damn human books. God, he had no idea how messed up humans were. That one was fucked up. At least she wasn't as nuts as some of the things that the book said. Sure, she was crazy, no doubt there. But who isn't down here? Yet she was something that no one else was, and no he didn't mean she was human, she was harmless as a baby.
"Sans!"
That wasn't a voice he was expecting to hear.
"weed?"
"down here!"
Hidden in the front of his post, Flowey sprouted and looked as if he was being chased by a mower.
"what are you doing out here? heh...did she finally get sick of ya and give ya the boot?"
"Ha ha, very funny. But this is not a social call. There's an emergency!"
"if you're looking for fertilizer, sorry, i'm all out."
Flowey growls.
"Listen to me, Smiley Trashbag, Lynsie is being attacked!"
That made his grin falter.
"what?"
"I don't know how many there are, but they set the shed on fire."
"what?!"
"She made me leave for help. She's afraid that the Black Soul will trigger."
His sockets widen.
"shit..."
Sans is about to teleport when a thought comes to him.
"okay, here's your next mission. follow the path to get papyrus."
Flowey is shocked.
"Papyrus? Why?"
"tell him that some fuckers are wrecking his shit. oh! and tell'em they called him a fart sniffing asshole. he'll rush back to town faster than him wanting to kick my butt over telling a pun."
"That is fast."
"now go."
Flowey nods and sinks into the ground as Sans also disappears.
Now in the town, the sounds of screams are heard as citizens flee to their homes in terror around Sans. Smoke is seen near his home and there are shapes he can't quite make out. His approach is a cautious one as there's no telling what is happening. Little does he realize that what is happening is a nightmare. For once he can see the figures better he regrets so much about putting the human out of the house. There she stands in bloody snow with dust coating the thick red, what looks like a plastic knife in her right hand, her left arm seems wrong at the angle he sees, and Politics Bear's head is under her boot.
"Is this what you wanted?"
Her voice...It made his bones chill down to the marrow. It was cold and growled, almost sounding like two voices in one.
"You wanted a human, right? And humans kill monsters, right? Well, you got your wish."
"No, no, no, no, no, no! Wait...!"
Her boot adds force and the bear's head is no more, just like the rest of his body as dust scatters.
"holy crap..."
The words escaped him before he could hold them in and she heard it. Slowly turning to see him in the glow of the burning shed, those black eyes and sinister smile were all too familiar for the skeleton.
"Sans..."
Never did his name sound so horrifying.
"*gulp* h-hey kiddo...um...you okay?"
She turns fully around and he sees more of the damage done to her, including the bones coming out of her left arm.
"They did this. They hurt me."
"i can see that."
"They wanted to do things to me. Very bad things."
She takes a few steps towards him and he finds himself frozen on the spot.
"I had to do it. I had to make them go away. They didn't give me a choice."
With her coming closer but seemingly calm, his instincts make him CHECK her.
[L̴̵y̷͠n҉s̸i̶e͡͏ – L̴͢V̶̧͝:̧͢ ͟2 – ̀H͘͟͠P͢: ͡͠͏7͠2̀ ́̕A̧T͏̶́K̶:́ ͏62̴͡ D̸Ȩ҉̷F̴͘:̀ ͜͏4͠͞͡2̨ ͏͘͠– ̛̛͝E͠R̢͡R̶̴Ó͠R̢̕]
What the hell is happening with this human?
"yeah...say, w-why don't you just put down the knife?"
She stops within arm's reach.
"Why did you CHECK me?"
Shit!
"n-no reason."
She tilts her head in observation. He'd say this was unnerving but that title currently was held by the fact she hasn't blinked since he's seen her.
"You're afraid of me."
A nervous fake laugh leaves him.
"what? n-no...that's dumb. you're being dumb."
Wow, he sounds like a dork when like this.
"Papyrus was right. You are a bad liar."
He began to sweat profusely.
"i am not..."
"I can smell your fear."
If ever there was a time for his knees to not be knocking.
"It's fine, I don't blame you...You should be afraid."
Flashbacks start triggering in his skull of a child in a striped sweater uttering those same words before slashing at him. Instinct overrides his crippling fright and he shoves her back, making her stumble. It takes a moment before both of them register what happened.
"So...That's how it is?"
"uh..."
"Very well...I was going to leave you alone, but now..."
She stands strong and brandishes the knife.
"I want to see you dance, skeleton!"
She swings the blade and he dodges the strike. She blinks finally and those soulless eyes target him.
[MEGALOVANIA begins to play in the background.]
Thus begins a fight Sans didn't see coming. A tit for tat of turns where she's on the offensive and he dodges to save his life. With each move, he guides her towards the town entrance, hoping to at least get her away from more monsters. But there's a drawback to this. He's not used to moving so much at any given time continuously. He doesn't have the stamina for it. So the longer this goes, the weaker and more tired he gets.
[Sans can't keep dodging forever. Keep attacking.]
Great, now those things are going to make this feel even worse. And by the time he's gotten her past the library he's feeling low.
[Sans's movements grow a little wearier.]
Twenty-two. It takes twenty-two dodges to tire him out. He's sadly counted all the times when he'd fight Frisk before he would be killed. And even more worrisome was that he was on dodge ten.
[Sans's movements seem to be slower.]
Almost there. Almost there. He's gotten her as far as Grillby's bar by dodge sixteen. If he can just make these last six dodges really long...He might at least be able to last long enough for Papyrus to get here. But then she does change her tactics. She doesn't come at him straight on as she had been doing. She instead makes a twisting move sideways that ended with a dive and he had to move to the side just to avoid the strike. She does this each time he tries to get back on the direction out, which is five dodges.
[Sans is starting to look really tired.]
One dodge left. It's all he has left in him. He's sweating and panting out of breath while her demeanor hasn't changed at all, even the lack of blinking again.
"*pant* you...you really don't...don't want to...be doing this..."
"You seem to think I can be swayed when you're near your end. An odd move. But at least it's something."
"*pant* don't make me..."
"Attack? I'd be amused that you tried. There's no point if you don't at least try once. Even those four fought back."
Four? She killed four monsters? But her LV is only 2...How weak were they?
"Pay attention, Sans. We are being watched."
She points the blade to the large window of Grillby's bar and Sans sees the onlookers inside looking back in worry.
"If not for me, at least show them that you tried. It is your job after all. Or are you expecting Papyrus to do the deed?"
He'd flinch if his nerves weren't shot.
"It's your go, Sans. Attack me. Come on. Do it! Keep your promise and kill me before I kill you!"
He hadn't noticed it before, a bit hard to do so when dodging knife slashes, but those last words made him see it. Those cold black eyes of hers that refused to blink were not the dry orbs he expected, no, they were wet and rolling the tears in streams down her face. Somewhere deep in there, that goofy weirdo girl he knows is trapped, and all she can do is try to fight this blackness. And if she can't fight it, she'd try to have herself be put down. Yet even if that's the case, he was struggling to do this. He had never killed anyone in his whole life, he simply doesn't have the heart to do so unless under the most extremes, like when Frisk does a Genocide run. But she was right in her words and he had to try. The Black Soul was going to make her kill him and who knows how many more if he didn't stop her now.
"*deep breath* okay, kiddo. i'll do it."
He focuses his remaining strength into his magic. His eyes go dark except for his left which flares into a glowing flash of red and yellow as he holds his left hand out.
"this is my strongest attack."
She gets ready.
"Thank you."
He smiles sadly and makes a fist with his left hand, her dark soul appears then turns a dull dark blue. He proceeds to lift her into the air before slamming her down hard.
[HP ██████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████ 66/72]
Then bones begin to spring out of the ground under her, stabbing into her as she tries to get back on her feet.
[HP ████████████████████████████████████████████████ 48/72]
Just as those bones begin to sink in and her footing returns, he sends out bones in a zigzag pattern that demands tight precise movement to avoid, which in her current damaged state she does not do well.
[HP ████████████████████████████████ 32/72]
Now for the real magic draining portion of the attack. He summons to him thirty Gaster Blasters, a special move made by Gaster himself and passed on to his brothers, then positions them to circle the bloody human before having them do as their name says...blast her.
[HP ██ 2/72]
Even after all that, after pouring the last of his magic into the attack and unloading Karmic Retribution (KR), she was still alive...just barely though. She was down on her knees, one of those heartless eyes forced shut, and bleeding from just about everywhere. Had her stats not doubled in her LV increase she would be dead where she stood. The weapon she held had been knocked back far enough that it was no longer visible, which is good because losing it meant she was pretty much declawed. For Sans though, the use of so much magic after all the activity was too much. He too found himself unable to stand, he wobbles a bit before falling on his butt in exhaustion.
"*shaky exhale* for the love of god...i really hope that made you normal again."
She doesn't move. She hardly breathes. She just stares at him as she had been. And for a moment, Sans believed the struggle was over. Until...the sound of snow lightly crunching gets his attention. His sockets widen as she weakly crawls towards him, the wicked grin she had since finding her like this now was an animalistic baring of her teeth and the growling coming out of her sounded demonic. Even that eye of hers was more fear-inducing, as it had gone completely solid black. If he had to guess, this was the Black Soul's beastly nature coming out due to being so close to dying. But now wasn't the time to think about the mechanics of her soul. He had to focus on backing away to stay alive while a lost in the darkness psycho human was coming at him with a look that screamed she wanted to gnaw on his bones till he was dead.
"easy, kiddo...let's not doing anything crazy. you're not yourself. it's the black soul making ya do this. ya know you don't want to hurt me."
She snarls and speeds up her crawling faster than he can back away. She ends up over him as he struggles to hold her back, her good hand tries clawing at him while her teeth snap with the want to crunch bone.
"damn it, don't do this! don't make me kill you!"
All the sound that comes out her resembles a rabid beast. Seeing no way out and her most vulnerable area is easily in his range, the Black Soul had remained exposed after his attack, he makes a bold move. One hand grabs her neck to push her up while the other grabs her by the soul itself and doing so causes the most ear-splitting screech to erupt from her throat.
[HP █ 1/72]
"now you listen to me and you listen good. i won't have you do this. you're not this thing. you don't want to hurt anyone, right? that's what you swore. now prove it. prove to everyone that this isn't the real you. that you're not like any other human. so snap out of it, lynsie! this is your soul! yours! you control it, not the other way around! so don't give in like some dumb bitch! fight it! fight back, lynsie!"
Suddenly he felt the soul beat in his grip and her body slowly ceased it's thrashing.
"Sa..́.͟S҉an҉s...͏"
Did he really get through to her? Better keep this up.
"yeah, it's me. i'm right here, kiddo."
"Sans.̨..͝I.͠..͠I di̶d̵ ̧bad ̸thin̕gs...҉D̷idn'̕t͘ I?"
That creepy voice was still there but it sounded more like her at least.
"yeah. but it's not your fault. it's this black soul. it made ya do it."
She softly began to whimper and not sensing danger anymore, he lets her neck go but still holds the soul that began to falter in its darkness.
"hey...come on, people get killed here all the time. it's no big deal. don't start crying."
She covers her eyes with her good arm and weeps into it, black streams fall down her cheeks till the tears become clear.
[YOU WON!]
[You earned 0 XP and 0 gold.]
Seeing this has him check on her soul. The black was relenting to show some blue, the same color as his magic. A small sigh of relief leaves him as the door to the bar opens.
"Sans? Is everything alright?"
Of course, the only one to check on them would be Grillby. No one else was brave or gave a shit enough to step out after seeing all that.
"i think so."
Grillby comes over and kneels beside the sobbing girl.
"try not to touch her right now."
"Why not?"
Sans shows him the soul in his hand and Grillby stares at the heart trying to regain its color.
"Is she okay?"
"not really."
Grillby's brow frowns and he hesitantly puts a supportive hand on the human's head, softly petting her.
"Shhhhh...It's okay, pussycat. Everything's going to be okay."
Still, she weeps as guilt and shame consume her. Sans waits until the blackness is completely gone from her soul before putting it back at her chest, letting it sink into her body.
"well...at least this can't get any worse."
"HUMAN!"
God damn him and his big mouth!
Papyrus finally appears and has the flower in his grip, it doesn't look alive as the roots are gone.
"pap...what did you do?"
The cold hard stare Papyrus has cuts through Sans and aims right at the girl.
"I THOUGHT I MADE MYSELF CLEAR..."
Papyrus puts out his right hand and Sans realizes what's about to happen.
"pap, no! you don't have to do this!"
"NEXT TIME WE MEET, I WILL KILL YOU."
Too lost in her sadness, the human is unaware of the red glow appearing underneath her and the danger it means. Knowing this, Sans makes a move to push her out of the way at the same time Grillby does. She is knocked back with Sans as sharp tipped bones launch out of the ground. They miss her and Sans. Unfortunately...they still hit someone.
"nooooo!"
The alarm in Sans's voice has the human look now at the scene of where she once was. The look on her face is the same as the one on Papyrus upon seeing the result of his attack...The impalement of Grillby. Needless to say, this was something no one was about to handle well, especially when Grillby coughs up molten plasma. Showing he's still alive but for not much longer.
"*painful cough* Judging by those faces...it looks as bad as it feels..."
For a human that's got the shit beaten out of her and lost a ton of blood to where she only has 1 HP, the girl made a burst of speed toward the down bartender.
"No, no, no, no...This can't be happening...You can't be hurt...You can't."
All Grillby could do was smile as she held his face.
"Someone! Anyone! For fuck's sake, he needs healing!"
Oh, if only it were so simple. If anyone knows the strength and deadliness of Papyrus more than the man himself, it's Sans. And the sad truth is that there's nothing that can be done. No amount of healing magic or health-replenishing food was going to undo an attack meant to kill. Grillby is a dead man. The only real question was when was his soul about to expend the last of its magic and let him fade to dust.
"God damn it! Why is no one helping him?! Why do none of you care?! Papyrus, recoil these..."
Speech dies on her tongue when she spies the flower limply held in Papyrus's hand. Her eyes widen as a new flood crashes down from those orbs like waterfalls.
"Asriel..."
That name...It came out in a hushed breath that few were able to hear. Her next words were much louder.
"You killed my brother?!"
There are not many things that can get to Papyrus. Not even threats from Undyne would shake his core. But knowing he had messed up and the look of loss on the human really hit him hard. The verbal and likely physical assault the human probably wanted to do was interrupted by a weak hand on her wrist.
"*weak* No, pussycat...Stay with me..."
"Don't speak. You need to save your strength."
A strained laugh leaves embers from the fallen friend. The only reason he wasn't dusting instantly was due to his high LV level. Not many would take it from being around the guy, but Grillby's life was harsh and he fought hard to keep burning. It's why he also set up shop to give people a break from all the death. To be able to relax under the protective roof of a man of LV level 10 and know true peace.
"*weak* And here I was worried...that no one would cry...if I ever died..."
"You are not dying! Do you hear me?! You just need a strong healer...Nanny! Mom can do it! We just have to get you to the Ruins and..."
"*weak* Shhhhhh...It's okay to be scared...But you need to be strong..."
"*whimper* Grillby..."
That wasn't going to be a thing for her any time soon.
"*weak* Sans..."
He flinched and choked down a painful lump of dread in his throat as he came to kneel by his friend.
"yeah, grillz. what...what can i do for ya?"
"*weak* I...I think we can call your tab even now..."
Grillby sputters as his flames burn lower with each passing second. It takes everything in Sans for him to not cry. Never in any of the past timelines has Grillby died, at least, not before him. So seeing this, the only friend he had now moments away from dusting, it was painful as all hell.
"hey...leave the jokes to me. *sniffle* ya never did have a strong suit for humor."
"*weak* Yeah, you're probably right...*coughs* Pussycat, mind coming a tad closer? I...I have something for you..."
She wipes her face dry before leaning closer to the fire elemental, no sense getting him wet at a time like this. When she's close enough for him to whisper, he reaches out and pulls her into a sudden kiss that has everyone stunned. While that part had them looking at him in confusion, Grillby can't help the smug and pleased smirk of satisfaction that came to his tired face.
"*weak* Sorry about that...I know you trusted me with your first kiss...but I don't think I can take care of it anymore..."
She blinks with uncertainty that such a thing happened and her soul began to emerge in an odd pink. This glow seemed to bring peace to the bartender.
"*weak* So that was the reason...Heh...I can at least die happy knowing this...Thank you...Lynsie..."
"Don't say that. Don't you fucking say that! You can't die after saying that!"
Grillby's eyes fight to stay open but can't and she loses it in desperation.
"Open your eyes damn it! Don't you quit on me after saying that! You are not allowed to die! Do you hear me?! You're not allowed! *sobs* You can't die! You can't! Don't leave me...Please..."
The flames that make up Grillby's form dim and flicker away. Then, when his body's heat could no longer be felt and his glow was gone, his form dissolves into dust upon the snowy ground. He's gone.
"*crying* This can't be happening..."
She scoops some of the dust in her hands and it slips through her fingers.
"*crying* This wasn't supposed to happen...No one was suppose to die..."
Regret. She was practically emanating the emotion in a near-visible aura as those words kept repeating in her weeping. Papyrus fell to his knees being drenched in the stuff, after all, it was his impulsive action to kill the human on sight that needlessly ended Grillby. Sans, on the other hand, felt pity. Frisk never showed this level of remorse. No human was known to ever give any care for the death of a monster. But she did. She cared. And for the first time in a long time, he felt bad for someone else. So he tried showing some support with a hand on her back.
"it's not your fault."
"*sniffling* This is wrong...This is all wrong..."
"i know. but what's done is done. he's gone."
He stands up and sighs heavily.
"come on...i'll walk ya back to the ruins."
She doesn't move.
"lynsie?"
"...I refuse."
He cocks his sockets at her.
"you refuse? refuse what?"
"This. I refuse this."
"look, i get it. you're sad. i'm sad. we're all sad. but ya can't just say you refuse to accept this. it doesn't make it stop being what happened."
"There's got to be a way to fix this. There has to be."
"there isn't."
"What about the RESET?"
His sockets widen.
"Maybe if I can trigger it..."
"don't!"
He was hoping she had forgotten him ever mentioning that. He didn't want to go down that same road of repetitiveness again. Living the same days over and over and over and over again to the point where nothing fucking matters so you give up trying on everything. No. He was not going through that again.
"What do you mean, don't? If it brings them back, I'm doing it!"
"no! i ain't going through that shit again! resets are like drugs. the first time is supposed to be the only time, but then you start doing them over the stupidest little shit reasons. well, no dice. you're not resetting this timeline!"
"My brother is dead! Grillby is dead! I'm not living in a world where I lose those that matter to me!"
For a moment, Sans didn't see the human girl in front of him. Instead, he saw himself the first time Papyrus died. As big of a dick that Papyrus is, he's still his brother, and no one can stand the pain of losing a family member that's that close to you.
"Please...Sans..."
He hated himself. He hated himself for feeling bad for her, sympathizing. It would be his death one day.
"*grumble* fine."
Her eyes light up with hope.
"Really?"
"but this is a one time deal. one reset. that's it. ya got that?"
"Thank you!"
She hugged his legs tight.
"Thank you, Sans! I promise...This will be the only one."
He casts his blushing gaze elsewhere, especially when that pink glow of her soul started to change into a bright white.
"yeah, yeah, don't mention it."
"If ever mention doing another, I give you permission to kick my ass."
"that, i'll agree to do."
He dreaded the moments to come. The way things would just undo from happening always made his head hurt. Most monsters didn't remember anything when a RESET happened. Some just had odd senses of déjà vu. But he had the rarity of recalling much more than the others did. So when the moments passed and nothing happened apart from her letting him go, a thought popped into his head.
"you don't know how to reset, do you?"
"I thought you'd know and would talk me through it."
He slapped his face.
"for fuck's sake...the most i know about it is that it mainly happened after each time frisk died. i don't know how the kid did it without death."
"So...I have to die in order to fix all this?"
"WORKS FOR ME!"
Blood gushes out of the human's chest as a bone shoves her soul out of her body. Scared shock encompasses her face as Sans's sockets widen from the surprise attack Papyrus did.
"I KNOW NOT WHAT YOU TWO HAVE BEEN SAYING, BUT IF YOU CAN FIX THIS IN DEATH, THEN I ORDER YOU TO DO SO."
Papyrus yanks the bone out and her eyes roll into the back of her head before collapsing to the snow.
[HP 0/72]
"what the fuck, papyrus?!"
"WHAT? I HEARD YOU BOTH SAY SHE COULD UNDO ALL THIS."
"yeah, but she didn't know how!"
"...GOD DAMN IT!"
The human's soul lingers after her final breath, as human souls tend to do. The white color was something monsters haven't seen in a long time. Monsters souls start out white, full of hopes and dreams, just loaded with goodness. But in this world, where death and murder are the norm, the white dulls into gray the longer the monster lives in such a state. So this pure white heart was a blinding eyesore. A reminder of what they used to be. That they were Monsters and not just monsters.
"SO...WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT THAT?"
"don't know. i kinda feel like taking it to the ruins, but..."
"YES, TORIEL WON'T TAKE THIS NEWS WELL."
"damn it...what the hell are we supposed to do?!"
Papyrus's attention left his brother and fell to the soul. It began to pulsate, small electrical crackling sounds coming from the random glitching surges. Sans now found himself staring at the soul as well.
"well...that's different."
"HUMAN SOULS DON'T NORMALLY DO THAT?"
"nope."
"HUH."
The soul surges strongly, bursting energy into the human's body till it fades away and leaves behind a button that Sans has seen too many times before. Only, something about it isn't quite right about it.
[̴̧̡R̸̕͢È̶͡S͟͠E̴̡̢T̷]͝
"IS THAT THE THING YOU BOTH WERE TALKING ABOUT?"
"heh...kiddo found a way. clever girl."
"WAIT...SO THAT THING WILL UNDO ALL THIS?"
"that's the gist of it. but who knows just how far back it might undo things. we could go back minutes, hours, maybe even days or weeks. it's a gamble really."
"BUT...THIS...ALL THIS WON'T HAVE HAPPENED...RIGHT?"
It's rare to see the great and terrible Papyrus like this. To be regretting his actions. To feel pain over a kill. To hate gaining EXP. Papyrus didn't know Grillby as well as Sans did, but he respected the man. If there was ever one person he would not kill, it was the one that made sure his brother was okay when he wasn't around. So if this thing, this RESET, can undo this stain...He was going to use it.
"y-yeah?"
Papyrus goes to hit the button but it's gone. Paw prints lead to the culprit, an annoyed black dog growling with the button in its teeth as it strolled away.
"easy, boy...don't do anything rash that you'll live to regret."
The dog shoots Sans a dirty look.
"ah, you little shit!"
Papyrus holds his brother back.
"ALLOW ME, SANS. CLEARLY, THE DOG DOESN'T RESPECT YOU BECAUSE YOU COMAND NO AUTHORITY. WATCH HOW A REAL AUTHORITY FIGURE WORKS."
Sans rolls his eyes.
"COME HERE, DOG. THAT DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU AND SEEING AS I AM CLEARLY AN ALPHA, YOU WILL OBEY ME."
The dog turns and lifts its tail at Papyrus. The insult is met with a cage of bones surrounding the dog.
"I AM IN NO MOOD FOR YOUR SHIT. DROP THAT...NOW!"
The dog snarls but does as told...except it is the one that presses the button. The button blinks away and the human soul responds with an explosion of all-consuming light that swallows all the Underground.
"*gasp*"
My eyes open to the sight I didn't think I'd see after what I last remember being through. I'm on the couch in the skeleton house. Sans is to my right, Papyrus to my left, Flowey on the table with the pet rock, and we're all okay. We're just watching TV and everyone's okay. Internally I CHECK my stats.
[HP 36, ATK 31, and DEF 21]
My stats are normal again? Then this means it worked, right? Time went backwards. Wait...then at what point in time is this?
"GREETINGS, YOU LUCKY CALLER. I TAKE IT YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN TO THIS UNFORTUNATE SOUL."
Mettaton's voice chimes in on the TV and the phone in my hand. A hard shiver racks my spine and I look over at Sans. He shakes his head and reaches for the phone. But for some reason I keep it and even stranger, I still answer knowing well what happened before.
"Y-yeah...*nervous* Let him go."
Papyrus scoffs like he did before and Sans glares at me. The robot on TV has an overly dramatic reaction.
"WHAT?! LET HIM GO? NOW, WHY WOULD YOU SUGGEST SUCH A SILLY IDEA?"
I know what happened last time. This is when Mettaton revealed me to the whole Underground and in doing so many died. I know better than to let that happen again.
"Because...If you ever want to meet me, you'll be smart about what you do next."
I hangup the phone and a shaky breath leaves me.
"you didn't have to do that."
"I know. But still letting him do that would be bad. And I've done enough bad."
Sans rolls his eyes with a knowing smirk.
"being nice is going to be the death of you."
A soft smile comes to me.
"I expect nothing less."
Papyrus looks at the two of funny. I don't think he remembers what happened and I think that's a good thing. Mettaton takes the sudden hangup with distress and fains hurt.
"OUCH, DARLING. THE RUDENESS OF IT ALL. I DIDN'T THINK YOU WOULD ACTUALLY CALL BUT I'M DELIGHTED YOU DID. ONLY YOU WOULD SHOW KIDNESS TO SCUM LIKE THIS. BUT...YOU CALLED MY BLUFF AND I RESPECT THAT. VERY WELL...THIS POOR, SAD, AND RATHER PATHETIC BOY GETS TO LIVE YET ANOTHER DAY."
The restraints release douche cat aka Burgerpants and he rips the gag off.
"You psychotic bucket of bolts! This was not worth the overtime bonus."
"MAYBE NOT FOR YOU."
He storms off and Mettaton takes a bow.
"I DID AS YOU ASKED, DARLING. I'M HOLDING YOU NOW TO YOUR END OF THE DEAL. I HOPE TO SEE YOU IN HOTLAND SOON. OR CALL. YOU HAVE MY NUMBER AFTER ALL. OOOH...I EVER SO HOPE YOU ARE ABLE TO JOIN ME WHEN THE TIME COMES. I HAVE BEEN EXPECTING SOMETHING TRULY FABULOUS TO BE READY ANY DAY NOW AND EXPERIENCING IT WITH YOU...WELL...LET'S JUST SAY IT WILL BE A MOMENT NO ONE WILL EVER FORGET. TOODLES~!"
The show cuts back to something already in the middle of airing.
That's it. This same event just played out and had a completely different outcome. My existence wasn't revealed and no one ended up dead. Everything is fine. Heh...Everything is fine. I start to laugh with joy.
"Everything is fine!"
"SIT DOWN, HUMAN. UNLESS YOU PLAN TO MAKE YOURSELF USEFUL AND FETCH ME ANOTHER HELPING."
Papyrus holds out his empty plate and I shock him with a surprise hug.
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!"
"Everything is okay, Papyrus. Isn't that amazing?"
"RELEASE ME NOW OR I WILL HURT YOU."
"And I won't have it any other way."
Papyrus looks at his brother uncomfortably.
"SANS, THE HUMAN IS ACTING WEIRDER THAN NORMAL. I THINK SHE MIGHT BE BROKEN."
Sans merely shrugs.
"eh, maybe she's just happy."
"FOR WHAT?"
"dunno. maybe because she gets to be around someone as awesome as you."
"HMMM...I CAN'T SAY YOU'RE NOT WRONG. I AM INCREDIBLY AWESOME."
I giggle at the level his ego can inflate to and release him to look at Sans.
"don't even think about. you hug me enough as is."
I shrug.
"Fair enough, Sansy-boy."
I take Papyrus's plate and grab Flowey on my way to the kitchen, making an mental vow to never be away from my brother again. Not that he minds the extra attention after going through that experience. Poor boy remembers what happened. He remembers trying to convince Papyrus to go to Snowdin Town but something happened and Papyrus got incredibly angry, ripping Flowey from the ground...things went dark after that. I keep my flower brother with me as the night continues on without incident. I don't even mind that Papyrus puts me out in the shed for the night while Flowey remains in the house. A little cold is nothing compared to what happened before. I just need to work on things. Make sure I do better. I'll do what Sans told me in that fight. I'll show all of monster kind that I'm not like other humans. But I need help if I'm to do any of that. The Black Soul is deadly. It's strong in power and control. It warps my mind, makes me do the bad things I think about but never would act on. I need someone that understands souls. I need Gaster's help. I don't want that THING to take over me again. So when I go for sleep, I try to summon that which always comes to me at random in dreams.
Sleep begets darkness and darkness begets the void's door. I welcome that door and the one that resides within. That man, the one Chara tells me to fear, is my only hope in gaining control over this darkness. I am not surprised by the smug knowing look on that face of his.
I look away at the ground.
"I would be lying if I said no. It's like...I was stuck behind this wall. I could see and hear most of what was going on, but I wasn't the one...I wasn't the one in control. It's like a dream when I come out of it. Everything feels foggy like it didn't happen, but I know...*shudder* I know something bad happened and I can't..."
I fight the lump swelling in my throat.
"I can't let this happen again. I don't want to hurt anyone. I'm not a killer."
He moves close and I feel this strange vibe off him.
I feel so weak and vulnerable having to do this.
Like before, allowing his magic to flow freely into my body makes my SOUL emerge. And just like last time, this thing is a swirl of multiple colors all sloshing about. Orange, red, blue, yellow, green, light blue, purple, black, white, and pink. Though unlike before, the white and pink are now larger than when he first did this.
"💣✌☼✞☜☹⚐🕆💧📬📬📬💧✋💣🏱☹✡ 💣✌☼✞☜☹⚐🕆💧📬 ❄☟☜☼☜🕯💧 ☜✞☜☠ 💣⚐☼☜ ❄⚐ 💧❄🕆👎✡ ☠⚐🕈 ❄☟✌☠ 👌☜☞⚐☼☜📬" (MARVELOUS...SIMPLY MARVELOUS. THERE'S EVEN MORE TO STUDY NOW THAN BEFORE.)
"*wince* Glad to hear it."
His top main hand pulls up and he hooks his fingers around the soul, pulling it away from my body. The pain isn't as bad as some of the stuff that I've gone through, dying being at the top of the list. But the whimpers that escape me can't be helped and the wriggling in his hold is just reflexes of instinct.
"☠⚐🕈📪 ✡⚐🕆 💣✋☝☟❄ ☞☜☜☹ 💧⚐💣☜ 💧☹✋☝☟❄ 👎✋💧👍⚐💣☞⚐☼❄📬" (NOW, YOU MIGHT FEEL SOME SLIGHT DISCOMFORT.)
I snicker to myself.
"✋💧 💧⚐💣☜❄☟✋☠☝ ✌💣🕆💧✋☠☝✍" (IS SOMETHING AMUSING?)
"*wincing* Just...trying to keep myself...in a good state of mind about it..."
He gives me a funny look as he swivels around to face me proper.
"*wince* Why do you say thaaaaaaat?! *shout* Holy fuck!"
His other main hand presses a finger into the soul and every nerve in my body goes off harshly. And the more he presses that digit into the heart, the more my body begins to twitch in violent convulsions. It all gets freakier when his finger actually phases into the soul and things get rather glitchy on my end.
"☞✌💧👍✋☠✌❄✋☠☝📬 ❄☼🕆☹✡ ❄☟✋💧 🕈✋☹☹ 👌☜ ✌ 💣⚐💧❄ ✋☠❄☜☼☜💧❄✋☠☝ ☜✠🏱☜☼✋💣☜☠❄📬" (FASCINATING. TRULY THIS WILL BE A MOST INTERESTING EXPERIMENT.)
Asks.... are.... open? OH MY GOODNESS TIME FOR SOME WORLD BUILDING (answer this at your pace ♡) What's Gaster's position in your HCs? Relationship deets? *high pitched squealing* WE LOVE YOU TOFFEEE
I’ve taken so long to get around to this that asks are closed again, but…! Baby steps!
I’m not a huge fan of Gaster– mostly because we really don’t have a lot of concrete information about him and it’s hard for me to get really emotionally invested in something knowing it’s just a theory/fanon and could be disproved by canon at any second– so he’s proooobably never gonna come up in anything I write or he’ll be mentioned vaguely and in passing. I have no intention of ever writing anything about him in the present tense.
That said, as far as all of my headcanons go…
Gaster was the Royal Scientist, he created Sans and Papyrus, and then he fell into the CORE and was erased from existence.
What, every Gaster?
Yep, every Gaster, even the Swap ones. Why? I don’t know, I like it that way and maybe it doesn’t make a lot of sense but we’re talking about Gaster: since when has anything we’ve ‘learned’ about him ever made sense anyway?
So here’s some relationship specifics:
Sans (Undertale)/Slate (Horrortale Sans): Gaster created him and his brother and raised them as his kids. …but his motivation for having kids was kinda selfish, mostly he wanted some extra pairs of hands to help him work on the CORE, except they turned out to be a lot more sentient than expected and kinda put the kibosh on that. Sans/Slate was raised normally as Gaster’s son, but his natural aptitude for the sciences gave Gaster some Important Expectations for his Prodigy Child and he got pushed into academia more vigorously than he liked, with his own wants and passions falling down by the wayside. After Gaster ceased to exist, he ditched the scientist lifestyle without regrets. Kinda blames himself for not being there to save his dad, though…
Papyrus (Undertale)/Papy (Horrortale Papyrus): Doesn’t remember Gaster all too well and if he did… honestly, he probably wouldn’t be very impressed. He remembers his brother’s parenting much more solidly, and even when Sans was just sort of a disaster doing his best, it was leagues better than Gaster’s nagging and tangible disappointment that Papyrus/Papy preferred artsier, creative pursuits to hard sciences. He doesn’t hate the guy, but he’s happy to live the rest of his life not thinking of or talking about him, ever.
Sky (Underswap Sans): Same story as the Undertale/Horrortales, but with a different spin. Sky had a lot of energy and motivation so he actually didn’t mind Gaster’s heavy expectations all that much– he already excelled without having to be told, so…what’s the problem? He likes his dad! He…maybe didn’t like him quite as much when Gaster was chastising him for exploring other interests and hobbies as if he couldn’t somehow multitask… or when he said something passive-aggressive about his little brother… But he’s not one to speak ill of the dead, so bygones are bygones, and Gaster couldn’t be anymore ‘gone.’
Paps (Underswap Papyrus): Doesn’t remember much about Gaster but every time he comes up, Paps gets a weird feeling in his nonexistent gut, a feeling that can really only be translated as a Marge noise. When Gaster was around, he just kinda always had the sense that he wasn’t good enough and that he was somehow being…Wrong. His bro worked real hard to undo the emotional damage that did to him so a mild discomfort is all it is. He’d still prefer not to talk about the guy, if possible.
Jasper (Underfell Sans): Gaster created him and his brother. They were not raised as his children. Even Jasper’s not quite sure if they were supposed to be minions or experiments, but the prick tried to pit them against each other a lot, maybe hoping that a rivalry would bring out their potential– or maybe he was just an asshole who thought it was fun, or maybe it was both. Gaster harped a lot on how fragile and weak Jasper was and as much as it galled him, he did end up getting a lot stronger trying to prove him wrong. Eventually, the tests and experiments and training pushed him to a breaking point and he just grabbed his bro and ran. In the process of trying to catch them, Gaster ended up falling into the CORE. Jasper still thinks of it as a missed opportunity if only because he can’t ever kick the guy’s ass now. He fuckin’ hates his ‘old man’ and would happily spit on his grave if he had one.
Pyre (Underfell Papyrus): Thankfully doesn’t remember too much about Gaster. Still has the odd nightmare or two, and a raging complex about his intelligence because of how often the bastard referred to his brother as ‘the smart one.’ To this day, one of the deepest ways to enrage him, insult him, or hurt his feelings is to suggest he’s any kind of stupid: it’s a lingering wound from a garbage ‘parent.’ A lot of his concrete memories of that early part of his childhood were blurred, if not wiped entirely when Gaster’s existence was erased, though, and Pyre was lucky enough to get a chance to start over fresh and be a kid for just a little while, under his brother’s protection.
Mal (Swapfell Sans): Same situation as the Underfells, different spin. Mal was also the physically weak one at first and caught a lot of hell from his Gaster about being disappointing, no matter how hard he worked to achieve his goals. It was why he created his second subject and dumped it on Mal to take care of until it was big enough for Gaster to get some real work done. Naturally, Mal grew very attached to his baby brother very quickly and hearing Gaster talk about subjecting Rus to the kind of things he suffered through– and more, since he was naturally sturdier, well……… Let’s just say that Gaster didn’t fall into the CORE. Mal regrets nothing, but he definitely carries a lot of scars and complexes from the whole ordeal.
Rus (Swapfell Papyrus): No memories of Gaster at all. He only asked his bro about where they came from once or twice and by the frigidly angry expression on Mal’s face, he figures ignorance is probably bliss. He doesn’t ask anymore.
Chapter 25
Word count: 2,066
Warning: Suggested self-harm
Aksinya had died today, for she had never gotten better when it came to the sickness since she was already far gone with it, the medicine only lengthening how long she had left. Gaster ended up finding out just as he would with everyone else sadly and once he did, Gaster got Asgore to go find Alphys a new home. He didn't feel it was a good idea to raise her himself, especially with him in such an unstable mental state at the time, and it's not like he won't see her again anyways. The Ruins and Home is a small place after all so as long as Gaster actually put himself out of his room, he would run into her at least once a day. She just needed someone who can properly raise her that won't be shutting himself off whenever upset.
Speaking of shutting himself off, he was desperate to be alone after Aksinya passed away so Gaster found himself in the darkest place he could find in the cave the Ruins sit in. His arms were sore as well as lightly dusted red and to add to it he forgot to grab bandages in the rush he was in. He ignored it however he could though, just staring at the cave ceilings just outside the main part of the Ruin to let his thoughts run, even if they weren't good thoughts usually.
His lonely state didn't last however, as much as he really wanted it to. Rocksan ended up finding him at one point. He should have really figured, but he forgot the one person that wanders most of the Ruins just to find something to do with her time since she was alone. He knew too, but forgot about it when it came to it apparently.
At first it was her normal approach up to Gaster, slightly cautious even of she tried to hide it each time, but then she picked up her pace to get to the other. “Gaster?” She called out with the slight sound of concern, causing the scientist to cringe on the inside. He just pulled his arms closer to his body. “What happened?” Her concern levels only seemed to be rising.
“It matters to you for what reason?” Gaster asks, a slight glare in his gaze. Rocksan quickly stopped where she was by Gaster’s side. She seemed upset, but he could care less at the moment. He preferred to be alone right now so he didn't care about the chances of chasing her off right now.
“I'd just like to help Gaster.” The other just turns his head away at her words, clearly not trusting her.
“And I don't care. Leave me alone.” He growls out in response. Nothing about his defense changed that showed he would allow Rocksan to know anything about him, no matter how much she has clearly softened up to him, for he clearly didn't want to do the same and regretted any moment he accidentally may have opened up on accident.
“And I don't care right now if you care or not about me because I just want to help.” Rocksan offers a hand to check out his arms, but he still refused to show them. Gaster glared at her, but with a bit of maneuvering to grab his arms, she had brought them over by force.
With just a glance, Rocksan was already staring in shock at the damage Gaster had caused himself. He just pulls his arms away with a look of disgust. To him, he felt lucky she only got a glance, otherwise she may just have pestered him more and just make him more willing to find any way to push her away from him. “What happened?”
“Just go away already.” He quickly cuts Rocksan off from more questions with a low, stern voice. His glare seems to easily cut through Rocksan this time, for a frown quickly formed on her face. She pulled away from him as quick as she came over and stood up, looking down at the fragile mind that was Gaster.
“I may not be the only one who will find out what you're doing to yourself, Gaster. I may not be able to be the most convincing person to you, but I suggest you stop before someone else finds out and tries to convince you again.” Gaster could tell by the look her face that there was a slight look that said anger, maybe for him not letting her help and clearly having a defense up.
With how Rocksan was walking off now after looking down upon him, it was clear she hadn't formed a proper bond before he was stuck with another person too attached to him like Asgore, and with that, Rocksan was gone and it would be the last time they talk to each other for a long while. Gaster was glad for it honestly, for his past wouldn't haunt him so much and he wouldn't continue do harm the person he believed was better off making her own life, not continuing to intermingle with a person who commonly hurts others.
Gaster kept to Home more often now than anything after that, so it didn't help them not see each other often, but he was busy constantly trying to help the last of those that are sick. Around people he'd watch himself a bit, but tried to convince himself that it wasn't because of what Rocksan had said, that he's naturally being a careful person. Either way, he could still feel the times they had talked coming back up whenever her words felt relevant, and he couldn't help but feel pissed off.
Occasionally he managed to run into Alphys on accident and she'd give him a smile, even if Gaster barely managed to return them before then or now. Once Alphys even came over to his room to ask for him to teach her again like old times, and he did it, mainly telling himself it was just right to teach the granddaughter of the person he looked to as a father figure.
Days tended to grow long and tedious from then on though, mostly when monsters got better or when Gaster himself managed to get sick yet still pushed himself to at least check on the other sick monsters. After they were all better, Gaster didn't have much to do besides isolate himself with his own personal work he felt like doing. Gaster didn't feel socializing or even just overhearing any conversations he may not like. Of course, there was exceptions of when Alphys would could by under the allowance of her foster parents.
The only time something big happened to him was when Asgore invited him to the Ruins for a walk and to talk about things that king titled important for them to discuss, as much as Gaster has been told at least. Of course, he had to oblige because of that so he put his studies away to join the king. They walked for a while in silence before Asgore actually explained what was going on in his mind.
“There's a door in the basement of Home, the one restricted to stay closed until we are sure it's safe to open, and I have been hesitant to try to open it so far since I at first didn't see a reason to do so for what may be on the other side may be just more danger, but I think it's time to test it finally for the chance of more room.” He states as he walks beside Gaster. His look seemed slightly determined, determined to help his people, as he looks at his friend for an answer. He had the look a rightful king might and that relieved Gaster a bit.
“Monsters are so far on a path to a more stable and healthy population now that the outbreak is controlled, so I think we can handle what hits us at the moment, whether these cave systems are abandoned or not.” Gaster responds, earning a not and a proud smile from Asgore. He didn't know what he did exactly for the king himself to look proud but he just accepted it for there wasn't any worth in bringing it up.
“Just as I was thinking, friend.” As the goat used the last term to call Gaster by, the scientist couldn't help but feel a slight bit of pain and disgust. He was nowhere near that clearly, but Asgore seemed to think otherwise for some strange reason. “We'll send out a scouting squad and then take the monsters who wish to move out if it's a successful scout.” Gaster just nodded in response to agree with the other and continued their route for their walk.
Eventually it was stopped for different plans when they got to the flowers, for Toriel was found tending to them and Asgore seemed interested to talk to her. He glances at Gaster at least, making the skeleton gesture for him to just go on and talk. Asgore seemed to want to protest, clearly to say he was still hanging out with Gaster instead, but the other just cut him off.
“Our discussion has ended if you have no more important matters to talk to me about. You can be allowed to be alone love birds with her, upon my permission if it's really needed for you to leave for her.” It sparked just the reaction out of Asgore that Gaster was hoping for, a flustered and stuttering mess that lasted for a while until he could figure out what to say.
“I-it's not like that! Promise!” Asgore tried to explain, but Gaster just looked at him like he really went there. Like the king had said something that clearly made no sense but said it anyways. It was kind of stupid if you count the many times they talked and been there for comfort for each other while Gaster just tended to hide away and be antisocial rather than anything. Asgore paused but ended up just letting out a heavy sigh and eventually walking up to Toriel with a glance back at Gaster once while walking.
The two began to chat happily, mostly about the flowers and things related, even if it was clear Gaster still had an effect on Asgore with the words he spoke earlier to get him to talk to Toriel. The scientist didn't stay for long though, soon moving on to head back to Home and get straight back to work.
Speed in the day eventually increased when Gaster listened to Asgore tell the guards the plan and send up a group to scout. Then again, the day when Asgore got the scientist to stand beside him as he announced his plan to his people the day after the scout came back with good news. The caves were said to be clear of any danger so they were going to go for it. Lands of snow were said to be ahead and more, making Asgore make sure to warn everyone as he announced it so people were properly prepared for the journey to expand their small kingdom of monsters.
Many agreed, while many said they preferred to enjoy the ruins. Gaster just at most overheard gossip and what everyone believed. Luckily, he mostly heard good things about it and Asgore, only a few worries here and there. Whether or not Rocksan knew of the news or would come, Gaster didn't know, and he tried to tell himself he shouldn't care exactly. Word may spread to the Ruins by gossip, but that couldn't mean much if she didn't care to follow.
Soon, once they were all prepared and ready to leave Home, Gaster was standing in front of the door that led out of the Ruins with Asgore not too far ahead of him and many monsters behind him. Guards were beside them in a protective formation for the journey and to make sure no one fell behind as they traveled.
When the door opened and the cold rushed into the ruins, Gaster could feel it wrap around himself and make him shiver in reaction. A step forward was the first in many, an unknown amount for now. He could already tell that this would be a long journey ahead of each and every monster, no matter who.
MAYEM: A Different Way Pt. 7
[Previous]
[Archive] [Cast]
Despite being really terrible at it, Gaster seemed to be enjoying himself. He had never been the one to read for the kids, Sans had always taken over that responsibility. He stumbled over larger words and was slow, but still managed to read quite a few of the short stories before stopping mostly for Papyrus’ sake.
“I like this book.” He grinned, finally closing it. “Did you find it at the dump?”
--
Gaster nodded sleepily. Yeah. It was one of the ones I dug up.
--
“I wonder if they exist in my world. I’ll have to try and find them.” Gaster said, turning the book over a little in his hands and studying the cover, or what remained of the cover.
--
It might, Gaster said. I think there are more of them. It had other titles on the inner cover.
--
Gaster opened it and read the other titles that were available of the same series. “Oh, so it’s a series. That’s pretty neat.”
He didn’t read fiction often, so maybe this would be a nice little activity to do when he got home.
--
Gaster grinned, nodding again. He was still tired and sore from the day, but he felt a lot better now. More than he expected to.
...he was just really, really happy the other Gaster liked his book.
It was really nice when you showed other people things they were going to like, he decided.
--
“If I find more maybe I’ll bring them back or something?” He offered, looking over at the child. He kept talking verbally just so his parents had at least some idea of what he was talking about.
--
Semi was grateful to be kept in the loop, even if he wasn’t particularly fond of those books himself. But Gaster nodded enthusiastically, not bothering questioning how they would be found again once the other family left.
Chxlxthx had left the room as soon as the stories began being told.
--
Gaster fell into a comfortable silence and Sans was still asleep. He could sleep all day and night if he was allowed to.
“I THINK I’M GOING TO GO SEE IF GRANDMA NEEDS HELP WITH ANYTHING.” Papyrus said, standing up. He hated being idle for too long and she had been very sweet to talk to.
--
Chxlxthx had taken to trying to fix up the damages to Gaster’s room while the others were reading. The door was open and she hadn’t touched any of his things, but she could repair a wall without having to disturb anything. She turned and smiled when Papyrus came in, giving him a wave. “Hello, dear.”
Semi was getting close to falling asleep as well, and simply nodded when Papyrus left. Gaster, however, made a strange face once Papyrus had left, looking a little troubled.
--
Gaster caught the look easy enough and switched to signing since Semi seemed to be falling asleep. ‘What’s wrong?’
“HELLO. I WAS JUST WONDERING IF I COULD HELP AT ALL.” Papyrus said, looking at the damages.
--
He calls her ‘grandma,’ Gaster said. He didn’t appear nearly as distressed as he had earlier, but definitely, the word had saddened him somewhat.
“I’m just caulking the wall,” she said, “have you ever done that before?”
--
‘Do you not want them to?’ Gaster signed, ‘I think your parents like it, but they can stop if you want.’
“A FEW TIMES, YES. DAD HAS DONE A FEW SIMILAR THINGS TO THIS.” Papyrus nodded and looked to the walls.
--
I’ve just never called her ‘mom,’ Gaster said, cringing a bit. He didn’t want to stop anything that made his parents happy.
He was just… jealous.
“All right. There’s a few spare tools in the corner there, if you want to help me fill things in,” she said, gesturing to the corner. “I’ve had to get pretty good at this over the years,” she said with a bit of humor in her voice.
--
‘But do you want do?’ Gaster asked.
Papyrus nodded and fetched a few tools to start helping her repair the walls. He was usually used to repairing doors, but he had done this a few times too. His dad loved to throw things at the walls or kick doors in and didn’t really understand that they were renting the place and you had to pay for that sort of thing.
--
Gaster nodded. Of course.
Maybe it was odd that he was more concerned about calling his mother ‘mom,’ than he was about calling his dad ‘dad,’ but… he’d always had a closer physical relationship with Semi. He had no problem curling up and cuddling with the dragon, and he tried to emulate him as often as possible, even with impossible things such as copying his magic style.
He didn’t do that sort of thing with Chxlxthx.
He had to tell her, somehow, that he loved her and thought of her as his mother, even if he didn’t… do all those sorts of things.
“This isn’t actually the worst he’s done,” Chxlxthx said, returning to repairs. “But we’ve convinced him to stop trying to practice fire magic in his room, so that’s not happening again any time soon, at least. How is everything out in the living room?”
--
‘Well soon maybe you’ll be able to.’ He smiled a little.
“EVERYTHING IS FINE. THEY STOPPED READING THOSE STORIES. NOW THEY’RE JUST TALKING. SANS IS STILL ASLEEP.”
“I JUST NEEDED TO GET UP AND DO SOMETHING. I FEEL BAD WE HAVEN’T DONE MORE TO HELP OUT AND… MAYBE MADE THINGS WORSE.”
--
He gave a small smile back, hoping the other was right. ...you’re still writing the instructions?
Chxlxthx looked over, concerned. “Dear, whatever do you mean by that? What happened was not your faults. ...is your father alright?”
--
‘Yeah. Mostly done. I should continue that.’ He looked around before spotting the stack of papers from before and walking over to collect them.
“OH, YES. HE’S FINE NOW.” Papyrus tried to smile, but it was a little forced. He really did feel like they had made things worse in a way, even if told the opposite.
--
Gaster watched him, content to just lie there and rest a while as the other worked.
Chxlxthx frowned a bit and sighed, turning back to the damaged wall. “...you know, your father’s the first person my son’s been able to have a conversation with since he was a small child?”
--
Papyrus blinked, “REALLY?”
He hadn’t quite realized that the two parents were out of the loop entirely with all the signing.
--
Chxlxthx nodded. “We manage to figure out a lot of what Gaster tries to tell us, but… it’s not the same as holding a conversation or being able to actually say what’s troubling him without struggling. We must miss a lot of the details. There’s nothing we could really use to figure out the basics except patience, and Gaster has such a hard time with writing-- so your father’s the first person who’s really been able to speak with at in a long time. Of course he’s more volatile and emotional than we’re used to. Semi and I should have realized that. But it doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing. It just means that.. There’s something new he hasn’t experienced before, or at least, not for a very long time. That’s a scary thing. Something was bound to happen.”
--
Papyrus wanted to apologize for his father for being so chaotic and ‘broken’, but realized that every time he had tried to say sorry it was met with almost scolding. “... YES. I SUPPOSE.”
--
Chxlxthx smiled again. “Hopefully now that this bump is over, the worst is done with, and we can focus on enjoying everyone’s presence.”
Gaster’s parents were very determinedly optimistic people.
--
And here Papyrus thought he was optimistic. Of course he wasn’t as optimistic as he had been once. It had been a rough couple of years.
“YES. YOU’RE RIGHT.” He said, smiling as he helped repair the wall.
--
Aggressive optimism. Chew through your enemies with sunshine and daisies.
“So, tell me some more about your world. What’s your home like?” She said, hoping it was a cheerful topic. “Any friends?”
--
“WE LIVE IN A TOWNHOUSE WITH A LOT OF THE OTHER MONSTERS AT THE BASE OF MT. EBOTT. IT’S NICE. BIG ENOUGH FOR THE THREE OF US. THERE’S A PARK NEARBY WE LIKE TO GO TO SOMETIMES AND WE CLIMB THE MOUNTAIN A LOT TO LOOK AT THE STARS AWAY FROM THE LIGHT OF THE CITY.”
“MY BEST FRIEND IS THE FORMER ROYAL GUARD CAPTAIN, UNDYNE. WE HANG OUT AND COOK TOGETHER WHEN WE CAN, OR GO INTO THE CITY TO SHOP.”
--
“Oh,” Chxlxthx said, blinking a moment. “You… live outside of Ebbott?”
She wanted to ask about the Royal Guard as well, as it hadn’t been established yet, but the first thing was first.
--
Papyrus looked like he had suddenly said something horrible without realizing. “OH… YES. OUR BARRIER WAS BROKEN YEARS AGO.”
“I… SORRY. WE USUALLY AREN’T SUPPOSED TO MENTION THAT.”
--
“I,” Chxlxthx hesitated.
Their barrier was broken.
There’s a park. They get to look at the stars. They’re free.
“I see.”
If her usual attempt at good cheer faltered for a moment, she tried to not dwell on it.
“That’s wonderful! I’m so happy for you, dear.”
--
Papyrus offered her a forced, sad smile and went back to his work. He shouldn’t have said that. But he was just so happy to get to talk to someone new. It was easy to forget that the other monsters they met were still trapped. Being underground had never really bothered him that much so he just sort of… forgot.
He wasn’t sure what to say now.
--
Chxlxthx looked back to the wall.
“So… your best friend. A former what now?”
--
“FORMER ROYAL GUARD. IS THAT NOT MADE HERE YET?” Papyrus asked, happy to move onto something else that didn’t involve the surface.
--
Chxlxthx shook her head. “No, if it is, it’s only been around so recently I haven’t heard of it.”
--
“IT’S… LIKE A POLICE FORCE, I GUESS? SHE WAS THE CAPTAIN AND HELPED TRAIN ME. I WANTED TO BE A ROYAL GUARD WITH HER ONE DAY BUT NEVER MADE IT PAST BEING A SENTRY.”
“BUT THAT’S OKAY.” He smiled.
--
“What is she like?” Chxlxthx asked, more than happy to hear about her grandchild’s social life.
--
“HEADSTRONG AND ENTHUSIASTIC.” Papyrus grinned, “SOMETIMES SHE DOESN’T KNOW HER OWN STRENGTH, BUT SHE’S A GREAT FRIEND.”
--
“She sounds lovely,” Chxlxthx said, grinning back. “You’ll visit her when you go home?”
--
Papyrus nodded, “YES, WE ALWAYS GET TOGETHER WHEN WE GO BACK HOME. DAD ALWAYS MAKES SURE WE HAVE A FEW DAYS OR A WEEK IN OUR OWN TIMELINE BEFORE WE HEAD OFF AGAIN.”
--
She nodded approvingly. “Good. I’d hate to think you were missing time with your friends.”
--
“EVEN DAD HANGS OUT WITH ONE OF HIS FRIENDS SOMETIME. ALPHYS, SHE’S WAS THE ROYAL SCIENTIST AFTER HIM.” He then paused. Uh-oh. Maybe he shouldn’t have said that either.
--
Chxlxthx laughed a little, gently. “That’s good to hear. Your father’s rather accomplished, then.”
The current royal scientist in this world was a mouse, and a jittery little one at that. Chxlxthx could see the other Gaster being Royal Scientist, but assumed it was one of the many differences between their worlds.
She knew her boy was smart. But she couldn’t picture him becoming something so public.
(she would fear him becoming so public. She wouldn’t stop him. But she would worry.)
--
“OH YES. HE’S DONE QUITE A LOT.” Papyrus smiled, glad that letting that slip didn’t seem to effect the conversation. “FOR ALL THE TROUBLES HE HAS ABOUT HIMSELF, THE ONE THING HE’S ALWAYS HAPPY TO ADMIT IS THAT HE’S A GENIUS. NYEH-HEH-HEH.”
--
“Well, good, at least he’s not down about eveything,” she said, finishing up filling the last hole and smoothing it over.
--
“HE CAN BE QUITE ENTHUSIASTIC, ACTUALLY. JUST… HE’S SCARED RIGHT NOW, SO HE’S A LOT MORE AWKWARD.” Papyrus said as he finished what he was working on.
--
“Do you know why?” Chxlxthx asked. Though she’d been in the room at the time, not being able to understand signs meant most of the explanation had been lost on her.
--
“HE’S SCARED ALL OF YOU WILL HATE HIM. HE’S NEVER VERY GOOD ABOUT BEING AROUND ADULTS AND HE’S AFRAID HE’LL DO OR SAY SOMETHING TO MAKE YOUR GASTER UPSET.” Papyrus explained.
“BEING IN A SITUATION WHERE HE ACTUALLY CARES WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF HIM IS VERY STRANGE FOR HIM.”
--
Oh dear. It was very very bad if his emotional stability relied so much on others.
That was not what Chxlxthx was good at, nope.
“Can you try to reassure him Semi and I don’t mind, at least?”
--
“I WILL.” Papyrus smiled and gave the monster a nod. “IT’S… ACTUALLY NICE TO SEE HIM CARE WHAT OTHERS THINK FOR ONCE. MAYBE YOU REMIND HIM OF HIS PARENTS.”
--
She smiled back. She wasn’t exactly sure she wanted to say she hoped so, but she was definitely honored. “Well, you are my grandson. I’d be happy to be another mother to him as long as he’s here.”
--
“THANK YOU. REALLY. IT DOES MEAN A LOT TO US THAT YOU’RE BEING SO WELCOMING AND UNDERSTANDING.”
--
She laughed lightly again. “We do our best. Really, it’s no trouble. We’re glad to help.”
--
Papyrus just gave her a happy smile. “IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I CAN DO TO HELP?”
--
She shook her head. “No, thank you though. I’ll have to pick up something for dinner or see if we have leftovers enough, since Semi’s out of comission for a little longer. But until then, I’m just going to go by the shelter to make sure things are still okay there.”
--
Papyrus nodded, “WE BRING OUR OWN FOOD TOO, IF IT’S ANY SORT OF PROBLEM. WE DON’T MIND.”
They were used to sort of ‘camping out’ a few days at a time.
--
“If there’s nothing we can find you’d like, then of course, please eat whatever, but I’d feel awful making you use your own food while we’re hosting you.”
--
“IT’S ALRIGHT. DON’T FEEL BAD.” Papyrus grinned, “WE SORT OF JUST SHOWED UP, AFTER ALL.”
--
Chxlxthx shook her head with an exaggerated determination. “If you don’t have food in your house to feed an army, you’re doing something wrong.”
--
Papyrus laughed, “I’LL HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT WHEN I GET HOME.”
--
Chxlxthx nodded again, glad to have found a kindred spirit. “I’ll have to go out then, soon. Watch over everyone while I’m gone, alright, dear?”
--
Papyrus gave a salute and grinned. “YOU CAN COUNT ON ME.”
--
Chxlxthx saluted back without missing a beat, picking up a few bags before heading out a moment later, promising to be back in an hour or two, four at the latest and only if something happened.
Then, she was gone.
--
Papyrus walked back into the living room to check on how everyone was doing. Sans was still asleep and Gaster was hunched over working on his translations.
--
Gaster had fallen asleep, curled against his father. Both dozed on the couch soundly, looking much better than they had earlier in the day.
--
Papyrus would stay there for a few hours, pulling a puzzle book out from one of the pockets of his lab coat to work on quietly. He would stick around until his ‘grandma’ got back home. He kept his promises and would watch over the house until she returned.
--
Chxlxthx returned an hour or two later, sans bags, and with newly-aquired groceries, just in case they did need to make more food. However, seeing most of the house asleep, she elected to let them stay that way for a while and simply returned to working around the place.
--
After hearing the monster arrive back home Papyrus put away his puzzle book and approached her. “I’M GOING TO GO WALK TO THE MACHINE AND GATHER OUR THINGS, IF THAT’S ALRIGHT?”
He could grab a few of the parts that needed repairs too while he was at it. It would give his father something to do during the night when everyone else was asleep.
--
Chxlxthx nodded, “Thanks for telling me. That’s fine, but be careful and don’t be outside long, alright?”
Despite her best efforts, there had been many times Gaster was outside without someone looking out for him, and he had been fine. Most monsters in the Capital were used to other monsters outside their own types, even if a few rare sorts showed up occasionally.
She just worried, was all.
--
Papyrus nodded and turned to leave, “I WON’T. JUST THERE AND BACK.”
He left the cozy house and went out into the street, walking along the way he had come the first time checking on the machine. Once there he would gather up the things they needed into the bags they brought. Some food and drink, a few books to keep them occupied, then went about gathering the damaged parts he could detach and bring back home so Gaster could work on them.
Once everything was together he flung the bag over his shoulder, covered the machine back up, and started back home.
It was nice to have a place as welcome to call ‘home’ in a world that wasn’t yours.
--
Gerson didn’t wander outside Waterfall all that much--the Capital was a bit too bustling and political for his tastes, but he did make the trip on the occasion to see some distant relatives and pick up a couple pieces of junk he couldn’t get out there in the boonies.
It was unfortunate, the things that startled ya when you weren’t expecting it.
It’d been a long time since Gerson’d seen a full-grown skeleton. There was that kid skeleton, but not even he had the heart to dust something so helpless and shaky, and there was always the hope that maybe those two monsters protectin’ ‘em might be able to straighten them out. And he knew Fluffybuns and the Queen were still both keepin’ an eye out, just in case--the skeletons hadn’t exactly deserved what happened, but their response and ferocity and revenges were enough to burn the memories into Gerson’s mind just as powerfully as any that’d happened during the war. Maybe more powerfully, in some ways.
They were already so full of despair, monsters. And then the caverns filled with dust.
His hammer--iron, steadfast and flaking with rust and age--was in his hand before he realized he’d called it. It had been so long.
The pole was the length of a shortsword, the head formed with a flat edge and a spike.
He was glad there was no one around, and with a swing of his hammer, sent a bubble of a bullet flying towards the skeleton.
--
It missed him by pure, dumb luck.
Papyrus had stopped to turn and look back the way he had came, double-guessing himself to make sure he was going the right direction when the bullet crashed behind him. He let out a screech and jumped forward, clutching the strap of his bag.
He turned and looked at the impact point, then followed it to who had cast it.
… The old turtle Undyne considered a second father.
… Why?
--
Gerson cast another bubble but held this one at the ready, watching the skeleton from a distance. His eyes were narrowed and his beak clenched.
Finally, after a long moment of staring in suspicion, he said, with a sort of finality, “There’s no adult skeletons in the underground. I don’t know how you got here, but you’re not staying.”
He cast again, sending the bubble hurtling at breakneck speeds towards its target. He was old and brittle, now, but he had once been a great warrior, and his aim was still perfect.
--
“WHAT-” Papyrus began, unable to even begin his sentence fully before the bubble unleashed towards him. He tried to dodge it, but he wasn’t as quick as Sans. He was strong, but lacked the experience of his father. Papyrus tried to leap out of the way, the bubble catching his leg and sending him tumbling instead of rolling across the ground.
Ow. Owowowowow.
Papyrus stumbled to his feet, hobbling just enough to throw himself around a corner. He grabbed the button in the collar of his coat and a panic-stricken voice came out from both Sans’ coat and somewhere on Gaster’s person back at the house.
“DAD! DAD GERSON IS ATTACKING ME AND I DON’T KNOW WHY!”
--
Gaster jerked awake at the sudden noise, looking around wildly for the source. His movement startled his father, who also quickly roused, making a confused and pained noise.
Gerson didn’t pause to let Papyrus talk. He wasn’t as fast as he’d once been, but he was confident enough in his defense that he edged around the corner instead of keeping back this time. When he got a good idea of where the skeleton was, he turned the corner, bringing up his hammer and swinging it so the spike end swung towards Papyrus’ chest.
--
The lights in Gaster’s eyes vanished and he lept to his feet. Even Sans was startled from his slumber, instantly in a panic at the sound of his brother’s distress. He pushed himself up and looked at their father.
“Coordinates!” The doctor yelled as he pressed the side of his head.
Papyrus summoned a blockade of bones in front of him, just enough to slow the hammer down so he could scramble away. He shot to his feet despite the pain he was in and ran as fast as he could. The crack in his leg would only get worse, but that could be worried about later.
As he ran he pulled up his sleeve to look at a watch that had his coordinates and other information and blurted them out. His voice was painful and strained, each step he took shooting up his leg and to the base of his spine.
--
Gerson couldn’t keep up with the skeleton, but he’d dealt with fleeing opponents before.
He didn’t like it. But sometimes it had to be done.
He took aim at the skeleton’s legs, always making sure he was just slightly ahead of where the skeleton was about to be, and with another crack of his hammer sent a bubble flying through the air.
--
The bubble collided with Papyrus’ spine, hitting him just enough to send him tumbling. He didn’t cry out or yell, teeth grit through the pain now coursing up his leg and spine to the base of his shoulder blades.
At least he had managed to get the coordinates out before being hit.
Back home Gaster wasted no time. He looked at Sans, "̷̝̖͇̪S͈͈̪̯͕t̹̩̩̹͖͕ͅa̹͙͓̦y͏͈̤̺͍̳̻̟ ̭̟͇̲͢ͅh̵e̝̪̭͈̫r̦͝e̠.̮͙̤͡"̶̣̹͈͕͚̖
He didn’t care if everyone saw this time. Gaster took a step forward, space tearing open before closing behind him.
He stepped out again, stood in front of his son.
--
Gaster took a shaky step off the couch and stumbled to where his double had disappeared. Slowly, he turned to the only other person who could understand him in the room. Tell mom to get bandages.
Gerson did not flinch when another monster arrived.
He didn’t recognize it as a skeleton, either. He just held his hammer steady, readying another bubble, and said, “Out of the way.”
But he would defend himself from this monster if he had to.
--
Gaster got one look at Papyrus laid on the ground, his pants and coat torn. His bones cracked.
He turned to Gerson and summoned a blaster, a massive draconic-looking skull pointed directly at where he stood, angled downward to at the very least not destroy the buildings behind him.
It’s eyes glowed purple and it’s mouth unhinged, light gathering at the back of it’s mouth.
There was a loud buzzing before it fired.
--
Gerson couldn’t get out of the way in time. He tried, though.
He pulled his body into his shell and the few feet he fell away from the blast zone were what saved him, even as scorch marks seared his side and ravaged the edge of his shell.
He thought of what he could do--summon spikes up through the ground, try to get off one good bubble, something-- but found his side was in too much pain and his old bones ached with exhaustion. He wouldn’t be able to move fast enough.
He stayed in his shell, hoping he’d survive another blast filled with so much spite.
Gaster took a step forward.
“DON’T!” Papyrus yelled, “DAD! DON’T!”
It stopped him in his tracks. His arms shook with rage. His form rippled and his face lost detail, his mouth stretching into a horrible, melting frown.
But he turned all the same and reached down to gingerly lift his son into his arms.
--
Gerson stayed still. Watching what he could out of the opening of his shell.
You could lose a battle, but win a war.
He watched closely, making out every detail he could of the nightmarish creature the skeleton had called its father.
--
Sans had rushed to ask for bandages back at the house, able to string something together about Gerson attacking his brother and his dad going to help.
Gaster lifted his son and took a step, teleporting them into the foyer of the house.
--
Chxlxthx had been prepared to charge out the door and help herself, but found the bandage kit instead and was ready when Gaster returned.
Semi had cleared off the couch and shuffled out of the way, watching nervously from where he’d sat down on the floor, his arms wrapped tightly around his own son.
They’d had no way of knowing Gerson was in the capital. They’d had no way of knowing he’d attack on sight.
They should’ve been more careful.
“Bring him here,” Chxlxthx said, having no time for such thoughts. She gestured to the couch. “What’s the worst of it? Papyrus, can you speak, dear? Where are you injured?”
--
Gaster carried him to the couch, laying him down on his front. His back and leg were cracked from the impacts.
“MY BACK AND MY LEG.” Papyrus said, still somehow managing a smile through it all. “NOTHING FATAL. I’LL BE OKAY.”
Sans rushed to his side but was sure to stay out of the way of any care he would get. “oh god.”
Gaster took a step back and watched. His body had lost some detail but he was trying his best to hold together despite the blood-curdling rage he was feeling.
--
His calmness despite his injuries gave Chxlxthx some comfort. Enough that she could smile back. “Yes, you’ll be just fine. After I patch you up.”
She set to work right away. She’d had quite a bit of experience mending skeletons by this point, and set to work immediately securing his back so that it would not get more injured. Though the crack on his leg was worrisome, it was back injuries that were most dangerous. Still, it wasn’t long before she was splinting the crack and giving some gentle healing magic to help the shattered edges meld back together.
She was quick and efficient, and caused Papyrus the bare minimum of pain while tending his injuries. Hopefully, her calmness would help the rest of Papyrus’ family feel more secure, even a little.
(Mostly, she gave a comforting smile to Sans.
He looked like he really needed it.)
Gaster watched the whole thing from his father’s arms, clinging tightly and digging his fingers into the scaled limbs to try and keep in the moment instead of sending his mind flying to all the terrible things that might have happened.
He caught sight of his double’s face, and shied back down.
--
Now it was Gaster’s turn to do the comforting. While Papyrus was being mended he walked over to his eldest son and squeezed his shoulder. "̮͎̙͍͉͖́ͅH͙̖̙̖̪̜e̥̻͔̻̱̘ͅ'̫̼̪̦̹̗̀ĺ̥l̛̩͕̺͉̪ ̲͈̦̬b͉ḙ ͙͖a̵̮̲̗l̵̹͔͕͚ri̜̥̱̻̺ͅg͙̗͡h͕̘̻́t̬͕̮̖.̢̱͈̘̜ ͉̜̥͟T̺h͕͉̮̮̟͚̦i̩ś̺̜̙ ̰͔i̟͍̤͓̙s̡̪͚̖ ̕Pa͔̻p͠y̴̦̩̠͈̠̝r̰̟̮̹̥̺̹ú̲̟͇s̮͍̗͔̗ ̝w͉͖̳e'̼r̙̭͇̞̳e͏͚̜̗̜̤͔ ̤̠̪̯͎͍̰̕ta͖͈̬̜͜l̵̹̠̫ḵ̢̲̩͖͈̤i̱͖̞͜n͉̬̼͉̘g̦͉͚̭̞̤̗ ̰͎̼̪̣̝͘ͅa͚̥̤͡b͏̭͎̜̟͈̳̜o̴͍̳̦̼͇̗u̖̞͈t͕̤̳͙̰͇̖.̷͍"̞̜̤̼̤
Sans looked up at him and nodded, then gave Chxlxthx a thankful smile. “yeah.”
Gaster was trying hard to pull his face back together, even taking a moment to step away and try and push it back into place. He had seen the look on the kid’s face.
Once he was patched up, Papyrus thanked them and then smiled at his father’s back as he pushed at his face.
“I’M PROUD OF YOU, DAD.”
Gaster laughed a little in spite of himself.
--
Chxlxthx nodded back at Sans before finishing bandaging Papyrus up and moving away, letting him have the moment with his family.
She hurried to get some sort of drink to restore HP as well, and… and perhaps, give them some comfort before the talk she knew was coming had to happen.
She shared a long, sad glance with Semi before she left the room, and Semi held Gaster all the tighter in his arms.
--
Sans sat on the floor by his brother’s side, not wanting to leave him.
Gaster had regained most of his face and took a breath. He turned to his boys with a massive grin. “Boy what a fucking great vacation.”
The boys managed a little laughter.
More Bandages asks! I'm curious, you've talked about the brothers visiting Gaster, but how does Gaster feel about the visits? How do his opinions differ for Sans and Papyrus?
Oh … oh dang …okay, I’ve been thinking about this in a similar context recently but not in this one (our overlapping thought paths are starting to scare me a little XD) …
*cracks knuckles*
Let’s do this.
At first, Gaster basically feels the same way about the visits as he does about the boys at the end of Blue: he really doesn’t see the point in maintaining any sort of connection with them, and he would really prefer that everyone stop being ridiculous and just cut all ties and leave it at that.
That’s what he tells himself, at least.
And to some extent, it’s true. It doesn’t matter what Gaster’s feelings about the boys were deep down: he still severely abused them, physically and psychologically, over a lengthy period. You can’t have that much love for someone, on any level, if you’re willing to go as far as he did, and he knows this. He’s done things to them that horrify the entire underground, and that’s never, ever going to go away.
That said, Gaster has never completely gotten rid of the very faint tinges of “dad feels,” and now that he’s no longer constantly squashing those feels by putting the boys through horrendous disgusting experiments, he doesn’t have as much of an emotional wall up. He still has that emotional wall, but it’s … a little flimsier. In the same way that putting in the plates was his way of “testing his strength,” I always imagined that the constant torture was him trying to drill it into his own head that “these are things not people and I will do whatever I have to no matter what.”
So things are … interesting, the first time Papyrus visits.
Well, Papyrus and Sans, but Sans is just coming along because he absolutely refuses to let his brother go alone. Gaster has been informed/warned by Asgore that they are coming, and at this point Asgore doesn’t even tell him to be nice to them. He just gives him a sad look and Gaster knows he won’t be able to say so much as a harsh word. So he probably won’t say anything at all.
And indeed, he doesn’t. Papyrus comes in with a batch of cookies he helped Ruby make and goes on awkwardly, but enthusiastically, about all they have been doing. Gaster doesn’t respond, except when Asgore insists that he say goodbye. Papyrus is overjoyed at the single word and leaves with a smile on his face.
He also leaves the cookies, which Gaster binge-eats as soon as he’s left alone.
Later that night, he writes down notes on everything Papyrus said, almost without realizing he’s doing it. He tucks them away with the letters he saved.
The boys don’t visit again for about six months, and Gaster forgets about the notes, and pretty much tells himself they never happened. At least, until Asgore informs him that the boys (read: Papyrus) want to come visit again.
Then Gaster starts to realize that he is … possibly not as detached from this situation as he wants to believe.
He does his best to ignore it throughout the entire meeting. He tells himself that Papyr–2-P is an idiot and it isn’t worth listening to his equally idiotic rambling. He doesn’t say it out loud because he knows that Asgore will never stand for it, but he thinks it, over and over again. To a small extent, it works. But … not that well.
He takes notes again, after they leave. This time he writes all of them without even realizing he picked up the pen. And this time he apparently took notes on Sans’s behavior, too.
That’s when he realizes this is … getting very much out of control.
Asgore is not helping. At all. In one conversation he mentions something vaguely about paternal feelings and Gaster just clams up for the rest of the conversation. Alphys isn’t quite so obvious - she spends more time around the boys and is very firmly in the “Ruby and Allandy are their parents and Gaster is not fit for any sort of parental role” camp, even though she still, on some level, admires him. But the very fact that she adores Sans and Papyrus so much, and likes to talk about them and keep him “updated,” just makes it worse - plus, she supports the boys in everything they want to do, and if Papyrus wants to have some kind of relationship with Gaster, she’s going to help in her own way.
This all keeps going as the boys grow up. Sans stops visiting eventually, and Gaster tells himself that he doesn’t mind, that he’s glad to only have to deal with one of them. But even though Sans had mostly kept silent, and only occasionally made a snarky comment, Gaster finds that he almost … misses it, when he’s gone. But of course, he says nothing about that.
Over the years, he keeps his feelings at just enough distance to keep himself from breaking down - because the moment he acknowledges any sort of paternal feelings for the boys is the same moment that he realizes that he did all those horrific things to his children - but the feelings still creep up on him, bit by bit.
He doesn’t think he shows any of this outwardly. But sometimes he swears Papyrus leaves the meetings just a little more cheerful than he should be.
But the part that makes him most conflicted, and most terrified?
Is the day that Papyrus comes in, smiling widely, as usual, and Gaster realizes that he is an adult. Fully grown. Apparently living in his own house with Sans, with his own job, and his own life.
And briefly, very, very briefly, Gaster feels … proud.
