I was bored and wrote this. I ain't the greatest writer, I'm more of an artist, so apologies if it sucks lol

Where it all started.

chapter one, the prince's return.

Everything got covered in snow, it looked like it was winter, but it was the middle of August!

Snow was everywhere, gigantic spikes of ice covering and towering houses, ice statues that once used to be people were around, screams of agony by other victims who were dying because of the now headless and animated statues, children running away, others trying to save their loved ones by the many dangers around, it was a mess. What was he thought was gonna be a joyous day, turned into a nightmare.

There he laid, the prince, on the verge of death, with the chains now made of ice, and snow covering the floor entirely.

Despite his energy being gone, he still found some to shiver. He was so so tired, but his body shivered, shook anyway.

He couldn't feel a thing anymore and he what he once knew started to slip from his mind.

His body was numb, he could barely feel it, the more he stayed here, the more he forgot he was on a wall dying.

Where was he again? What was he name?

What even happened?

All he wanted was to sleep, really. He wanted to say sorry to Vanessa, but he has long forgotten why, or maybe he never understood why she was mad in the first place, he thought she liked flowers?

his name has been forgotten along with many other things, in his head there was only that accident that happened not so long ago..maybe a few minutes ago..an hour? He doesn't know. He wasn't counting. All he could think of was the sight of her love turning into that monstrosity upstairs, and for some unknown reason, he still found some tears to cry about it. Not like he had anything else to do. His throat hurt, he couldn't move. All he could do was cry and wait for his death.

And when it came, he almost didn't believe it. it felt like he was reborn again, full of energy, full of emotions and thoughts, so many things that he almost thought he was really just alive, and that whole accident was just a bad dream of his.

but he was wrong, he could tell, as much as he wanted to believe it wasn't real, it was. Very much so.

he could hear screaming, death, he could somehow smell death coming from all places. He looked down at himself, standing, where he once was. No body, for ..some reason, but instead just him. Just his dark purple hands, his dark purple feet, and snow. Nothing else.

He couldn't see himself in the face, but it didn't really matter, he was free.

Sad for him, the door of the basement was closed, the snow was probably covering it to the other side, and it was too heavy for him to push off,

So that meant he had to pass through the manor. But no big deal! He knows the manor like the back of his hand! He can probably just say sorry to Vanessa now, too.

What can go wrong?

Everything. Everything can go wrong.

he doesn't know how, but everything went from bad, to horrible. the moment Vanessa saw him, she screamed and started to chase him like a predator would to a pray. He is now hidden under a table, she is roaming around. He is scared. He doesn't know if he's hyperventilating or not. He doesn't know even if he's breathing, but now he just wants to get out.

She's too mad, he can't talk to her, he has to wait.

Also, he doesn't wanna get hurt, not after he finally feels so great!

so he had to wait for Vanessa to get out of the room so he could sprint out of the manor, and that was oddly easy. he didn't even make a sound! maybe because he's not wearing shoes? Is he wearing shoes? He just has some..purple feet. Are those his boots? They were purple right?

Dosen't matter, what matters is what he found outside! He couldn't even recognize his own village!

It was his, right? He remembers wearing a crown, he was a prince or something. So, it must have been his, right?

His kingdom! What has happened!?

he could still see blood around, dead people, headless statues walking around, ice..ice everywhere!

He felt like throwing up, but he couldn't. He felt like crying and even if he was crying, he couldn't feel his eyes tearing up.

he also thought of hiding from those ugly headless statues (he never liked those statues in the first place. They gave him the chills. Now they move and are headless?! the worst!) But they ignored him. They attacked everything but him. Is it because he's the prince? Or because of his weird purple look? (He still hasn't seen his face, he wonders if it looks weird too.)

but again, it wasn't something that really mattered for him, he didn't even wanna deal with those. But instead he ran as fast as he could (he felt oddly light, like if he was floating, but he could see his legs moving like if he was running!) To the village, but there wasn't any chance anyone survived!

Half of the Village was completely covered in snow the ice spread until the bridge and more statues appeared. But they weren't headless or the ones he hated so much, they were..ice statues. the moment it clicked on who these ice statues were, he had to look away and take a breath.

"Alright...alright.. it's-it's fine. Y- t.. it's okay..m-maybe there's.. survivors?..gosh, I hope so." He felt like he was out of breath, but could he be out of breath?

was it because he was crying? Was he even crying? He felt numb for the most part, but unlike in the cellar, this numb feeling felt normal, rather than exhausting.

But to his surprise and relief, thanks to him avoiding making eye contact with the ice statues, he found a small child. He was shaking, he was probably freezing there like the prince did in the cellar.

"Oh, little child! There you are! And I here I thought there was no one else here..uhm...alive." were the ice statues even alive?

The more he talked, the more he got close to the child, and for a moment he thought he could hug them and comfort them, but...

They ran in fear, screaming about a scary ghost or something.

He wasn't a scary ghost! He was the prince of subcon! Prince....the prince! Yeah!

He felt almost offended, but maybe he just didn't look like himself? I mean, maybe he looked super tired or- blue from the cold! he needs a mirror.

But later!! Now his mission was to go after the kid, who knows what they could find there! It could be dangerous! They could trip and get hurt! Or trip and fall and die! Or get eaten by a bear! Or meet those scary spiders that were always around the forest! Or more of those statues!

...

Vanessa wasn't kidding when she said he needs to stop overthinking.

But- whatever!! it's- he can overthink this, the kid might actually be in danger!

So he went after the kid. again with the feeling of floating, but it was easy to get used to it.

He really wonders what he looks like. Maybe instead of blue he's purple? Or maybe it's the lighting? He surely dosen't look good! I mean he was trapped for like..an hour. Ugh, he doesn't know! In that cellar, while he froze to death. Maybe he looks like those ice statues.

But wouldn't that mean they are always awake and conscious like him? he doesn't seem to be covered in ice though?

if he could find a mirror he could - ugh right! He could have seen himself in the mirror in the manor! He was being very sneaky anyway, Vanessa wouldn't have heard him, he's so stupid sometimes! His memory really needs to be checked.

Maybe once this is solved he can go to a doctor, he probably need a doctor, right? I mean, he's purpl-

Then, they have Jon age up and date immediately in time for pride, no warning.

Then, he’s Superman.

Then, we get a super sons movie where he’s 10 again (?)

Then, they have Jon and Dick team up as a protege-mentee situation—not bad! Just…not quite the character we’ve just established. Not quite Jon

Then, they have Jon and Damian babysitting wonder woman’s daughter for *checks books* 7 years????? Making Damian and Jon 21 and 24 respectively??? Ok…?

Then, they do Beastworld, and Nightwing comics, AND Superman comics AND Wonder Woman issues with Jon in ALL OF THEM at the SAME TIME and looking vastly different in all of them, with vastly different characterizations, none of them solid, consistent, or acknowledging the fact that he’s been trapped inside a volcano and travelling the multiverse and having a boyfriend all in the same breath.

What am I supposed to be believing right now, DC.

Au where, when someone is ready to die, they don’t feel any pain. The more ready someone is to die, the less pain they feel.

tws: lots of talk about death and dying (not technically suicide ideation but could theoretically be read as such), mentions of Neil's torture in the Nest (very vague and brief) and by Lola (not really vague but not explicit either, if that makes sense)

Neil Josten is ready to die.

It’s not that he necessarily wants to die, but he knows it’s coming, and he’s made peace with that. He’s ready for it.

He’s not worried about his impending death. He’s known that he was never going to make it to the end of the year ever since he first signed the papers to become a Fox and put himself in the spotlight, so he knows that, no matter what, at least he’ll have a painless death.

Sure, his experience in the Nest ends up being more painful than Neil wants it to be, but it isn't all that surprising. He might be ready to die, but he’s not ready to die there. Not by Riko’s hand. He refuses. So, there’s pain. But that’s a different circumstance. Someone else is depending on him to live. Neil doesn’t want to think about what could happen to Andrew if Neil doesn’t keep Riko’s attention on him. So, it’s different. He needed to live to ensure Andrew would be okay.

In the end, it doesn’t matter anyway

Once Neil starts getting the countdown, though? Well, he knew he wasn’t making it to the end of the school year, but now he knows exactly how much longer he has. When the day rolls around, Neil is more than ready. He’s been waiting for this moment for months, almost an entire year, really. Sure, it sucks that Neil won’t be able to play the game he loves with his team anymore, and sure, it’s a shock to see Romeo and Jackson and Lola waiting for him, but that doesn’t change the fact that Neil is ready for them. He’s glad that he’ll get to take away this last bit of satisfaction from Lola. She won’t see him flinch. She won’t hear a peep of pain from him when she inevitably tortures him because he’s been preparing for this day for what feels like his whole life.

He’s prepared to die.

So imagine Neil’s shock when he acutely feels the sting of metal that is Lola’s first cut. He’s so surprised that he fails to hold back an audible noise of pain. Only a not so long buried instinct from when his mother was still alive keeps his next reactions in, but his slip-up doesn’t go unnoticed. Lola is behind him, slicing him up, taunting him. Look who’s not so ready to die after all. I’m almost disappointed by how easy it was to get a reaction from you. I was hoping for a little more of a challenge. Tell me, Junior, what do you have to live for? What is making you want to live? Why aren’t you ready to die?

Neil barely hears her. He’s too busy asking himself all the same questions. Just a few months ago, he took an exy ball to the stomach and barely felt a thing. What changed?

Unbidden, his mind wanders to Andrew. Andrew and keys and the Monsters and the Upperclassmen and Wymack and Abby. The Foxes. His team. His friends. He realizes that, at some point in the past few months, they’ve managed to get past the walls he put up. They’ve rooted themselves deep in his chest, and they’re not letting go.

They are the reason he’s not ready for death anymore. The thought of leaving them hurts. He knows it’s necessary. He knows he needs to let them go, or else he would only end up bringing more monsters to their doorstep, but he’s now realizing that he’s not ready to let them go. Have to and ready to are two completely different things, he realizes as his voice is violently ripped from his throat through the burn of a cigarette lighter on his face. He’s feeling this pain because he’s not ready to let go of his new family yet. He’s not ready to leave them. He’s realizing now that he might never be ready.

A few hours ago, Neil was sure he was ready to die. He walked to his death with open arms, ready to embrace a painless, inevitable release. But now, in the midst of unexpected pain and agony, Neil changes his mind. He thinks he wants to keep feeling this pain. He doesn’t want the painless release of death anymore. He wants to fight back. He wants to keep living. He wants to make it back to his team. He wants to make it back to his friends. He wants to make it back to Andrew. He wants to make it back home.

Neil makes up his mind. Even if it means distancing himself from the person he’s lied into existence over the past few months, even if it means becoming the person he’s been running away from for almost nine years now, he’ll do whatever it takes to make it back to his family.

truly this lantern rite had EVERYTHING although truth be told, like, the way venti was kind of shoehorned in was a little disappointing. i felt a little bit baited by the way the 3.4 TRAILER HAD THAT ONE CUT RIGHT where it goes from VENTI PLAYING THE LYRE in the harbor to XIAO LOOKING UP AT THE FIREWORKS outside of wangshu inn, and then we see the xiao bit in the actual cutscene on day 2, but absolutely none of venti until the epilogue. and also we never see venti playing the lyre during the event story so it's like. whoever edited that pv absolutely had xv on the brain. like. what the hell was that it was magical i feel higher than a boat right now

BUT ANYWAY like i don't even care how obviously shoehorned in venti felt bc the interactions were all SO PERFECT i love love loved them. i loved the way hu tao just RAN INTO WANGSHU INN and started shouting for xiao, and then talked death to him until he was like "yeah sure i'll go to your dinner". they are so besties i love them their friendship is everything to me.

THE WAY. XV INTERACTED. IN FRONT OF US. xiao just like "well. um. there's this. um. um." TOTAL PANIC MODE n venti had to SAVE HIM with like "huuuh? did you forget already? i'm a bard!" like HELLO why do they need a COVER STORY why are they making up COVER STORIES TOGETHER WHAT WERE THEY DOING TOGETHER IN THE MARSH EARLIER like what kind of GAY SHIT--

also i'm pretty sure when xiao started explaining his relationship to venti, venti fluttered his lashes at him. like, i recorded the whole quest (bc i didn't last year with the final part n i REALLY WISH I HAD bc i STILL remember the dRAMATIC GASP i had when we had that one beiguang moment in the cutscene), and when i rewatched it earlier i was like. "HANG ON. DID HE JUST FLUTTER HIS LASHES" n rewatched it like three times. maybe my game was just stuttering BUT IT DEFINITELY LOOKED LIKE IT and maybe i'll gif it when i get home from work tonight

BUT ANYWAY (2) point is that the expression work this time was ON POINT like whoever's doing all that over at mhy hq needs to get a raise pronto. venti going (¬‿¬) at all the other immortals was so immaculate. you aren't subtle little man!!!

it's probably just shipper goggles on to an extent, but i feel like the xv implications were really strong this time around, with the parallels to that fontch guy's ancestor, and the guiping n everything... i'm kind of disappointed that we don't get to actually hear any of venti's unobstructed thoughts on xiao; like the ribbing n implications at the dinner are a lot of fun (like, they were totally making out in the marsh before dinner. we all know this. it's very clear imo), but it kind of makes me wonder why we can hear xiao like... do his Very Heavy Implying abt venti's importance to him (though again, he doesn't outright say anything-- we know the full extent n depth of xiao's feelings abt venti (romantic or not) bc we can read his character stories, so technically really he hasn't told us jack squat in the current canon timeline), but the best we get from venti are smug expressions. those expressions are very telling, ofc, but a very unhinged part of me wishes that mhy didn't feel the need to wrap up the xv in layers of allegory and metaphor and just outright heard one of them say, "this person is very dear to me." i know it's just the rabid shipper in me, and i need to be sedated, but i was really kind of hoping that we'd see the allegory w/the fontch guy's ancestor n madame ping lifted away at the end n, like, see or hear it be bound to xv outright. just for purely self-indulgent purposes o(--(

but anyway (3) i also love love loved all the playful ribbing, witty banter, and prev event callbacks btwn the characters!! hu tao n venti canonically making a pact to be poetry friends was SO GOOD you just KNOW hu tao is gonna commission venti to compose a JINGLE for wangsheng advertising purposes later, while zhongli n xiao are like, "this meeting never should have happened. we are all doomed." somehow i legitimately forgot that xq n venti know each other from irodori n was like, "...huh?" when xq mentioning knowing venti for like, a FULL two seconds. the way venti was like "damn you know i was right outside this entire time. can you believe the way some people ignore the wind?" n zhongli was like "hahaha (✿◡‿◡) the harbor is very busy this time of year (✿◠‿◠) it is very hard see or hear an individual person's whereabouts (^人^)"

AND ALSO. PAIMON BEING ELECTED AS THE "MOST DISTINGUISHED GUEST." PAIMON YOU GOT IN THE WAY OF MY DERANGED SELF-DELUSIONMENT MANY TIMES THIS LANTERN RITE BUT THAT WAS PRETTY FUNNY. i thought it was interesting how no one nominated venti. like i was kind of expecting xiao to do it (but ofc he nominates traveler) which is fair honestly, n then i was like "IS LUMINE GONNA NOMINATE VENTI????" but then she nominated paimon n paimon was like "wait... me?????" n it was just EXACTLY like a bunch of adults telling the little kid they are the most specialest ever n they should have the honor of doing The Thing. as that little kid growing up, i know the feeling very well lol

there are other bits i'm just,,, rotating around in my mind, like venti and kazuha hanging out on the alcor, the way xiao goes "i can't taste the difference in xiangling's special almond tofu" when you go visit him afterwards, ALL THE GANQING THAT HAPPENED IN THE MAIN STORY I'M SO HAPPY FOR THEM I'M SO HAPPY FOR ME I WON VERY HARD THIS LANTERN RITE, n like,,, yeah!!!!
