Reading an old Star Trek book and to my surprise Jim Kirk has always had Daddy issues

So the only Star Trek book I’ve read was the one explaining how the tribbles episode was made and the aftermath, so trying to read Enterprise (1986) with some basic knowledge of trek post 2009 is fascinating. Cuz you see where the breadcrumbs of some of the characterization and even backstory come from.

In chapter 2, Sam Kirk and Kirk’s mom show up to Kirk’s ceremony where he takes command of the enterprise. They talk about George Kirk Sr. being in Starfleet, (he’s dead here too) something that I don’t think was in any of the episodes or movies. And how he was always distant and away. And they’re clearly going for some parallels/dramatic irony with the Wrath of Khan when it comes to Kirk not believing he could’ve developed a relationship with his father as an adult. And it plays into the tragic aspect I love about Kirk.

Upon reflection he’s happy that Carol rejected him (he proposed to her in chapter 1) because he doesn’t want to leave anyone behind while on the job, only returning for sparse visits the way his father did. But at the same time, Jim craves companionship. And he can’t get it in his current job because as captain, it is not ethical for him to date anyone else on the Enterprise.

Anyway the long and short is if we take this book into account, Kirk has always had daddy issues. It’s just in TOS EU it was abandonment issues whereas in 2009 it was dad sacrificed himself so high expectations issues.

The little details like the mom’s name getting carried over into the aos movies are a good touch, but then seeing George Kirk being a Starfleet officer actually get incorporated into the 2009 movie as an important plot point, and then also using his absence in Kirk’s life but just in a different way as part of Kirk’s backstory is so cool to me.

A difference though is unlike fanfic tropes, Winona is actually a good mom and wants Jim to succeed in his career where his father failed in his Starfleet career. Unfortunately though Jim appears to be falling into the same pitfalls. As in lack of communication and unwillingness to play workplace politics.

That last burn from Winona tho… like damn girl I felt that.

Another thing I want to backtrack to, Sam Kirk. Sam being the alleged chosen child, the one that was supposed to follow in George Kirk’s footsteps but didn’t, and then Jim strolled in and did even more than what Sam was supposed to do, and Sam and George never reconciled. Like dudes this book is almost 40 years old and this stuff was in strange new worlds last year. Tho xenobiology appears to have morphed into xenoanthropology (tho according to the fan wiki he’s still a biologist so idk what the deal is)

For the record Sam’s characterization isn’t remotely the same here. Likely the choice to keep him out of Starfleet all together removed any sort of resentment of Jim potential like he has in SNW. There’s still tension though, as Sam tries to force Jim to confront why he’s reacting like this to his first mission for the enterprise being an escort job for a flying horse.

Shifting gears back to Jim needing to learn how to play workplace politics. The assumed reason for Pike leaving the enterprise. While SNW is doing the whole, Pike knows he won’t fly the enterprise forever and about the disfigurement and is cool with it, I find if fascinating that he’s more, sad about it here and that he got promoted out of the way for pushing too many buttons. It would be a sad ending but I wonder if SNW would incorporate that into its eventual ending. Hell I wonder if that’s what happened to Kirk between TOS and TMP.

Anyway big picture is this book is a fascinating time capsule and it’s fun seeing just how much has stuck around over the years both in fandom and in the franchise itself. Whether or not that’s the book’s doing is questionable but still. Fun to think about.

My favorite unofficial friend group is Rachel, Grover, Percy, Annabeth, Nico, and Will cause yes I am well aware that some of these have no basis in cannon whatsoever but I think the dynamic would be fun like:

They all hang out at Sally’s … like a lot. Cause she’s pretty much the closest any of them has to a mother figure (except will??)

Annabeth and Will nerding out about science (Physics v.s. Biology)

Nico and Rachel are liberal arts kids to death

They all have a lot of fun introducing Nico to modern day things. It’s so entertaining that they dedicate one day a month to all meeting up and showing Nico something new.

(Annabeth is black eat me) Rachel has curly hair as well so her and Annabeth swap hair care tips.

The girls actually become SUPER close and hang out all the time.

Everyone kind of takes up a big sibling role for Will and Nico. Percy and Annbeth especially and they often coach them through a lot of being-a-good-councilor-hurdles

Rachel teaches Nico how to paint. (I just remember him admiring her paintings in TON and I won’t let it go)

Will and Grover (and probably Percy) grow weed. Will uses it a lot as a medicinal herb, but he also smokes it with Grover and Percy from time to time. Also they all make weed brownies together one time and then watch Disney’s Hercules together and it’s a wreck.

They all borrow each other’s clothes. This leads to a lot of interesting fashion choices

Rachel introduces Will and Percy to anime and they get SUPER into it

Annabeth and Grover build eco-friendly treehouses at camp for the nymphs and satyers

They talk about their trauma a lot. It’s much easier for them to talk about it to one another because they know they’ll understand

SLEEPOVERS. The do all the stereotypical stuff: face masks, truth or dare, movies.. ect

Percy and Nico have a lot of adventures in cooking, which they both like to do. They’ve make at least 8 different types of blue pasta

Will and Percy are honorary horse girls (wills from the country and Percy just likes horses) and they go for Pegasus/unicorn rides around camp

They all work really well in battle. Anytime there is a monster the six of them can usually take care of it in 15 minutes

OOH good pick feels very topical these days. I feel she picked up a reputation in the IWC real quick for being one of those "underrated workrate wrestlers" who was never going to get noticed or rise higher than holding the tag belts, a Jungle Kyona type, that I think was both wrong as all things the IWC believes are and also made people overlook her legitimately extremely good character work and storytelling.

Like she was out there feuding with Giulia over how her and Himeka were being too gay in public and ruining DDM's look in 2020. You know? Her relationship with her tag team partner changed the identity of an entire faction permanently. She told an entire story that nobody noticed about how she was suddenly in love with Momo when Himeka was injured just to have something to do while she was gone. I think some people thought that got dropped but like - no it was literally just bc Himeka was gone. The second she came back she went 'sorry Momo who?' like. It got resolved. I am begging wrestling fans to think about things ever. She's been telling a fucked up "I left my little sister behind to make her stronger" story with Inaba for like 5 years without even being in the same company. Maika puts a lot of thought into everything she does and just being like "workrate wrestler, love how she gets in the ring and hits real hard" is an injustice to all the other dope shit she does too bc she's one of the furthest things from a wrestler who stops thinking about it as soon as the bell rings.

I think people also discount her very real popularity just bc she's not like an idol type or whatever. Like she was one of the first wrestlers in Stardom doing product tie-ups and cross advertising with other stuff. She's like 80% of the reason I have any followers right now among an admittedly skewed audience but one that actually has some god damn taste.

starting to think more and more how doodle breeders do everything i am starting to require for a pet dog breeder because i have seen SO MANY companion breeders breed dogs with issues from reactivity to professionals struggle with basics with their dogs.. mmm but doodle breeders out here do fancy websites with 3209843904034 videos and pictures of their dogs at like, cookouts and farmer's markets and running around in a yard and playing with neighborhood dogs and just very basic stuff but it's VIDEO showing like.. the dog isn't anxious around strangers, the dog willingly hams for random ppl at a cookout, the dog willingly plays with strange dogs (and play style!!! it's important when u have sensitive breeds like bcs imo!!), the dog can walk through a farmer's market or home depot and not be fucking weird and u have so many breeders "why do people go to doodle breeders ): what is badass breeder ):" idk karen maybe it's because their websites are not geocities inspired and updated and they have the shit that regular people want like dogs being okay with kids, at cookouts, with strange dogs and the PRICE RIGHT THERE ON THE PAGE. any time i see a dog for sale without a price i assume it's out of my budget. idc if it might not be, i assume, and that makes emailing that breeder soooo unlikely b/c the stigma of asking and stuff. but even if i think 2k is out of my budget i can ATLEAST sit there and.. you know.. budget for it. plus badass breeder talks about this and stuff idk more and more im learning to not trust a single thing a breeder says even ones with large followings (lol thanks BC world) because they. fucking. lie. and want to see videos of it myself. but on the same note but.. flip the coin or w/e hunting breeders do the SAME THING but.. with hunting stuff. their websites might make you think you're trapped in 2005 but you can bet they have youtubes of their dogs working and usually a price right there and pedigrees right there and most of the good ones talk about the dogs settling in the home 'is great with kids' etc. and u can see some videos or pictures that make the trainer in me go !!! of the kid sprawled out on the dog or using it as a horse and the dog has a :D expression so like. really. idk. being able to see evidence of the shit breeders say beyond some letters behind a name is MMM important. like i really dont care about seeing a video of the dog doing an agility run. like yeah it's nice, i guess, i can see jump types, but was that dog muzzled to get up there? did the owners have to ask for every dog to be 30 feet away or the dog reacts? was the owner hyper aware of the dog because if someone got too close, the dog would bite? and i saw that ALL THE TIME at agility (because i also had a dog like that!) so just shots of the dog doing a run? not good enough. show me the dog settling in the crate at the event, being walked between runs, etc. prove to me the dog isn't a basket case outside of work pls

I grew up with tmnt 2003 so I’m biased too but I did like 2012 when it came out, but I didn’t follow it as much as I did 03

I completely agree with you on Donnie and Mikey’s characterization! I really loathed what they did to Donnie with the whole love triangle thing they wanted to do. I absolutely loved Donnie in 03 but 12 Donnie omfg. I blame a lot of my dislikes of the show on the writing itself bc I don’t think they wrote April very well either it’s odd idk.

I thought Donnie’s crush on April was cute, silly, and funny at first but they kept beating the dead horse with this and then Casey showed up, added to it, and I wanted to scream.

They ALL deserved better but how the writers treated mikey and his canonical adhd was TRASH.

This is just me very personally as well but when I was just a wee child I empathized with 03 raph a lot bc, even tho I never acted on it, I was just constantly filled with rage that’s a lie I swung a computer at my bully’s face when I’d finally had enough. I didn’t like how they treated Raph’s anger in 2012 especially during the episode where they specifically addressed it. Splinter basically just said “bottle it” and like kind of belittled him for letting things get to him. When they were insulting him for the sake for the exercise I think I realized that 12 raph has trouble seeing when people are being serious with their insults (like me lol). Those were his brothers, contextually he should’ve known they didn’t actually mean any of those things but that’s not how he takes it. And if slash SPIKE is anything to go by he actually thinks his brothers think a lot of bad things about him. He doesn’t open up to his brothers because he does not trust them with his emotions that he himself has trouble dealing with/interpreting

On a more positive note: I do love Raph and Mona’s relationship ship, it’s absolutely fantastic

Writing characters with anger is a difficult slope and is often written badly. As someone who has anger issues but learned how to deal with them over time, when I see a character like 2012 raph, who has trouble handling and understanding his emotions, it both points out the issues and also makes it hard for me as someone who deals with the same thing, relate because it’s often demonized.

Literally half the stuff they wrote in 2012 acted like they wanted to talk about heavy issues but it was written in a way that was almost mocking and demonizing with most of not all the characters. Literally it brought out the worse in everyone of these characters and it drives me nuts

April is the “strong girl who don’t need no man/turtle” but written insufferably, Donnie is the swooning brother who basically is an incel but also a genius who seriously deserves recognition for all he’s done (rest PLS), raph and his anger issues and lack of understanding his own emotions and the perpetuated “I’m tough, don’t feel emotion” manly bullshit, the terrible depiction of Mikey and his ADHD, and I’m not sure they did a very good job or not on PTSD with Leo and his whole focus on being the leader isnt… that great from what I know. And Casey… idk tbh??? He also had some “let me fight for the girl” dumb dumb stuff so he was meh. The love triangle with him and Donnie and April was also dumb because if those three just stopped that shenanigans, can you imagine how great they’d be as a dynamic???

Anyway, ye. There is definitely a lot they could have done better with all of them but I know that is more of a time thing~

The minion i've been using for him recently is the puffin from the newest dungeon

☝️ raiden & puffin. in the past i've used the hunting falcon & ofc estinien (of wind up & dress up variety. i've been wanting to make an edit of one of them to be foulques but...! modding is scary). it's mostly birds because raiden LOVES birds, especially chocobos. the chocobo chick was my favorite minion for the longest time i used CONSTANTLY because i had to be lore accurate and raiden would adore having a little chocobo follow him around.

for mounts, I'd say Raiden's favorite is the company chocobo u get. first mount ever. again he loves chocobos. (if there are more chocobo mounts than ones u get in msq i can get id love to know) he love's her her name is lexington (named after lexington, kentucky like the place with the horses) Lore wise his original chocobo was slaughtered at the bloody banquet so he couldn't escape & Haurchefants black chocobo was gifted to him because of that.

(i cant bear to part with lexington for one moment long enough to dye her so i could be lore accurate so she is still yellow. idk...)

Raiden has always loved birds when he came to Eorzea and saw just how abundant chocobos were for transport and the like he got a little obsessed (since there were none in yanxia, though he loved his friends yol). He had a very, very brief jaunt as a jockey because of that. so i try to incorporate chocobo stuff any way i can whenever the game lets me (half my island sanctuary animals are chocobos because of this) (the other half is karakul. for the elf wife, of course).

he had to quit because receiving his echo made them grow significantly, and just became too big to race anymore (like real horse racing, you have to be pretty light and small- though i'd imagine there'd be different divisions for different races since they vary so much in size & weight. raiden outgrew elezen division & was too small for roe 😭) oh, and also the whole "fighting primals" thing. I think that unfortunately took most of his attention away.

So the current twitter discourse is that someone lamented there hasn’t been a lot of “kid” movies lately in theaters and then people got mad that when they suggested Shazam 2 or Ant-Man 3 they were shot down. I have zero kids so I’m just reading the comments actual parents are making and idk man. I get it, you know your kid and a lot of these movies are pretty long.

But man, I feel like some folks really are sheltering their kids from so many things because they think it’s “too dark” and I’m like “genuinely have you watched any Disney or Pixar movie” because almost every one of these movies deal with death, evil, abandonment, curses, evil magic, obsession. Like the Incredibles had a villain who was basically a super serial killer and a dude who sued Mr Incredible because he thwarted his suicide! Syndrome died getting SUCKED INTO A JET ENGINE!!

Lilo & Stitch has entire plot lines about dead families, a sister trying to keep custody of her little sister, and even stuff about micro aggressions.

In Tarzan, not only did Tarzan’s parents die in a jaguar attack, but his adoptive father was shot and died in front of him. The villain dies by accidentally hanging himself!

The 2003 Haunted Mansion movie, which was PG, had racism, murder, and suicide shown graphically on screen in the first 5 minutes!!!

Like I get it. You know your kid. But my god dude, a lot of us (lol sorry I sound like a boomer rn) grew up on movies we definitely shouldn’t have seen as kids and we all turned out fine, arguably our issues do not come from seeing temple of doom when we were 8. I would even make the argument your kids are exposed to worse things in the news every day.

Then again my generation saw the OJ trial, the WTC bombing, Waco, several cults, Columbine, Princess Di’s death, and of course, 9/11 and all the wars that followed, which are like, arguably more traumatizing than cartoonish violence in a movie, IMO.

Kids have to do shooting drills in kindergarten. Seeing some dudes in goofy costumes punching each other seems like. Nothing compared to that.

But again I don’t have kids so you know, I don’t really have a horse here.

bruh. idk why these damn horse girls have such a grip on me but they do some places in s1 made me cry and this was wrenching my heart too which is fucked up cause I'm usually p unaffected by stuff anyway, this is a special ONA that'll be just 4 episode, you can even watch it all on uma musume's youtube WITH english subs even it looks great, since it's cygames own studio, the music's great, the voice acting is great, all the quality you'd expect from one of the top grossing gachas in the world (despite being jp only) the thing that surprised me the most was how good the character acting is tho, ofc uma musume has always had the little details with tails and ears but sheesh also I'm loving to see ayabe and my prince opera in action, some horses I've really come to like a lot in recent years cause of twitter

let me start off by saying I'm never watched konosuba cause of aqua, kazuma and darkness, however I do like megumin. watching this since I know I wouldn't need to watch it to know anything (tho if you spent any time on tumblr back when it first came out you've seen it all through gifs and caps and clips like me so..) but anyway

it's alright, the only good animation moment was at the start of ep 1 with, of course, the explosion but I shouldn't have expected much considering what I know, oh well. however, takarie (megumin) and toyosaki aki (yunyun) really carry it with their performances, tho mostly takarie cause of how megumin in lol

not really much to say other than that so far, if you like megumin then it's a must watch show but you already knew that if you do. she should be using her first explosion next ep (5) so that should be cool

Imas CG: U149 Ep1 - 4

TL;DR: if you weren't gonna watch U149 cause "it's just for kids" you're wrong, and if you like the previous im@s anime do yourself a favour and watch it cause it's incredibly good too. I'll be honest I wasn't too sure about U149 at first, since it's the kids from CG I thought it was gonna be, well, aimed to kids as a way to bring them in into the franchise but I was very wrong! The show is incredibly good. It follows the same structure as the original im@s anime of having and episode dedicated to each of the cast members (completed with their character song as the ed) and it can actually be serious. Like in ep 3, miria is live streaming with satou shin and she gets some hate messages in the chat and it's a very tense scene. they even did this cool trick where the noticeably muted the colours during that scene to give it an heavier atmosphere it was so good man. Also I love all the cameos of other cg girls, the direct and background easter egg ones too. Also because I played the game hearing the insert songs and eds just got me going like that leo pointing me lol. Anyway I'm start to ramble too much but, please understand, I love idols. A lot. One final thing I'll say however is: it was very funny going directly from megumin into this and seeing the difference in quality; Megumin has the bare minimum of animation (cause kadokawa) but you can really see the passion behind U149, all the characters got little details and you can see their personality with how they move and interact with each other.

still nothing crazy animation but we did get the lance fight and the first muscle magic moment, and it actually didn't look half bad which gives me hope for fights later on but we'll see how it turns out

nice ep, mostly an introduction to roy the other protag, he isn't nearly as annoying as he could be so that's good, there was also a buncha good expressions so that's fun

nice episode, mostly exposition and set up so some people aren't gonna like it, but it happens every now and then in the breaks between action. also they really made takarie say chinpo noooo

ST✰R: Strike it Rich Ch 0 - 1

new manga by the duo behind danberu, yabako and maam, it's probably gonna be set in the kengan universe since it's yabako writing it but we'll see. anyway like it said in the post I made before, it's about a underground fighting ring for women, it came out with a prologue chap and the 1st one, setting up all the characters and all that, the art is a lot more brutal than I expected since I just see danberu as ripped cute girl fanservice but shoulda kown better not really much else to say, chap 1 ended with a big cliffhanger, I wish it was a bit longer, hina down here seems interesting enough tho so we'll see how it goes, gonna be rough remembering to read it tho since it's biweekly

1. IIRC, Malcolm Spellman confirmed that Bucky & Sam move in together after TFATWS. What do you think Bucky & Sam's shared home is like? And how well do they get along as roommates? Give me your sweet sweet headcanons.

2. What is one thing, big or small, on your wishlist for stuff you'd like to see in Cap4/Thunderbolts?

Aw yay, thank you for asking and I hope all is well for you too! :))) And I genuinely apologize in advance because I know this is gonna be long

1. I just know their bickering didn’t go away, they still do it all the time, and usually it’s because Bucky’s just annoying and has to pick (harmless) fights for shits and giggles. It’s over silly stuff, the most irrelevant little things. Sam though, he lovesssss to tease and torment, he’ll purposely annoy Bucky cause it’s hilarious to get a rise out of him.

Bucky is a little obsessed with Sam and very much grateful to have him as a roommate, so he tries to subtly and cooly (fails) do nice things for Sam. He’ll buy Sam stuff, take care of his errands, surprise him….just any little thing to show his appreciation, and he tries hard to play it off as no big deal. But Sam knows, he can very clearly see the affection in every little act but he spares Bucky of being called out until he’s comfortable enough to admit himself. Idk I also just picture him as a low key house husband while Sam’s busy doing his captain America stuff.

There’s lots of movie nights, or tv nights, or just nights generally dedicated to Sam catching Bucky up on pop culture. Which is extra fun for Sam because how often in life do you get to play teacher and show a person all the things you like?

Sam cooks, Bucky cleans. Sam’s basically a whole pro chef, like he learned good from his momma. Bucky’s tried to return the favor, but instead got banned from the kitchen for the abominations he’d try to pass as meals.

The first few days they live together, internally Bucky’s a little too excited, like a kid at his first sleepover or something, and he’s a little odd…he kinda just awkwardly follows Sam around the place at all times as if he doesn’t know what to do with himself other than be right with Sam. It takes Sam gently pointing out that Bucky can go to his own room and they can have private time.

They’re very touchy too, constant casual touch’s throughout the day, always invading each others personal space.

2. Honestly…..I’m beating a dead horse here but I wish BOTH of those would get some major revisions. I feel like everyone who follows me knows how I feel about thunderbolts, but the more that comes out about Cap 4, the less happy I am with it too bc it sounds like a hulk movie in disguise. I’m still holding out hope for Cap 4 because it sounds like it has potential to be solid still, but thunderbolts…my expectations have been shot dead. Anyways….short version, I’d like to see the two movies be connected by Sam having Bucky play double agent to help take down Val and Ross from the inside. That’s at the bare minimum.

Getting more in depth though, I would totally change the line up for Thunderbolts. I mean, beyond just removing Bucky because the problems with what’s been confirmed run way farther than just him. I mean Zemo should totally be there considering he’s the main team leader in the comics and it’d be so so so easy for there to have been a release deal. White Vision joining would be a great way to bring him back, especially since he’s government property now, and also diversify the skill set of the team so that its not completely bland, and so they wouldn’t get immediately obliterated by the confirmed villain (or use a ton of plot armor for the teams survival). Titania would be awesome and a perfect fit personality wise, and it’d also be a great chance to rejuvenate her character and actually give her/Jameela a serious chance. I mean there’s plenty of others that would be good too depending on the route of the story. But yeah, sorry for the rambling on this one….it’s just a mess of movie already when there was a ton of potential 🤦🏼‍♀️

3. I love multiverse/variant fics where current Bucky and the WS are stuck together. Or even 40s Bucky, cause I’ve read several great fics about that too. I’m obsessed with those, I don’t care how many times it’s done, I will eat that shit up every time! I’ll literally go feral over any fic with that concept. It’s so fun to me and there’s some much that can be done when exploring such contrasting versions of Bucky would react to/interact with each other.

But that being said I can’t say I’ve ever read one where it’s just the WS and 40s Bucky in the same time. I think that’d be the MOST chaotic scenario and would be very very fun to read
