sorry if this is a silly question or if I've sent it to the wrong blog & ofc you don't have to answer if it's too personal. But you are an entomologist so I figured I'd ask - do you mind saying what exactly you do ? you don't have to say where ofc but I'm in school for entomology and I have a vague idea of what I'd like to do but also the opportunities out there are so broad and different and confusing that I figured I'd ask real people who actually do the stuff about it. Hope you're having a nice day/night !
no worries. i tend to be a little bit cagey about my exact job, but i've talked about it a number of times both on this and my more bug-focused account. the short version is that i work in a lab that monitors for and identifies potential exotic insect pests. we do some more focused projects in detecting and eliminating specific targets that are known to be extremely economically/ecologically damaging, and also a lot of general insect trapping in areas of interest to passively monitor for things that shouldn't be where they are. there are both federal and state-level agencies that do this, which have their respective pros and cons, as well as the more general pros and cons of working for the government. i think some entomology museums may also occasionally contract out this kind of work to pay their bills.
the nice thing is that while much of the year is busy keeping up with the thousands of trap samples coming in from around the state and country, the off-season is usually pretty chill and i have time to work on personal projects around the lab. i tend to set aside a lot of cool by-catch from the samples i process and when i have free time i work on curating and identifying those specimens. for example i spent a chunk of this last fall working on a massive backlog of unidentified native bee specimens that i'd set aside from flight trap samples over the previous couple years and expanded my lab's curated bee collection by thousands of specimens and probably close to a hundred species, maybe more. i've also recently started more seriously dipping my toes into weevil identification which is an absolute nightmare but i have so many cool little beasts that i want to put labels on that it's worth the pain.
anyway i hope that answered your question more or less! i'm biased of course but i think being an entomologist is the best job in the world. i am a world-class slacker and shirker and have dedicated much of my life to doing as little work as possible at all times but in my current position i have to constantly restrain myself from putting in unpaid overtime most weeks because i just get too obsessed with whatever little project i'm fiddling with at the moment.

Wait hold on I need to share my friend's based take on Helen tma
So yknow- most people, you know the fandom Helen design: Spiral Edition
It's the long boi stature with the wide smile, too tall for her own good, seems to have too many edges and corners for a person, yknow
My friend, who does not consume much tma fan content and only recently listened to tma was sharing his Helen design and headcannons and honestly I vibe with it so hard so I'm putting his brain fluids on the site for peer review knowing full well that most people will probably disagree but that's ok
He doesn't draw Helen with any of the spiral!micheal characteristics! And at first I was like "bold move but ok" because the Twink Horror Hands are kind of a staple for spiral shenanigans esp since Helen had taken Micheal's place
But he was explaining how he wanted her to go more down the uncanny person path where she looked like the type of person to be sickeningly sweet, and looked like a Good Friend who is actually manipulative on levels that are incomprehensible to those who grew close
And honestly I hadn't really considered how the difference in manipulation tactics between spiral avatars would impact their design and tbh I'm all for it
Micheal was a very aggressive and sinister type of manipulative, where his whole thing was to run things behind the scenes, everything always leading back to him type
Helen on the other hand, was nice and friendly and got to know you and supported you- until you weren't of use to her anymore. Until you posed a threat. Her whole thing was to get you to trust her and then use that trust to her own benefit
And I could absolutely see how Micheal's incomprehensible body shape with pointy ends and bulging joints that hurt to look at would fit his character
While my friend's design of someone who is your good pal and friend but Slightly Off though you can't put your finger on why would fit her personally
And having that variety in depictions of spiral avatars? Honestly? Good shit. I eat that up. I feel like there's an underrepreentation of spiral avatars that aren't just Long, and having that physical distinction actually goes hard imo

Welcome Home Fae AU Quick Concept
Mainly posting this so I don't forget it tomorrow. You can give feedback if you want! It is always appreciated! I researched as much as I could, but I am still not entirely sure if all fae live in the fairy realm (it probably depends on which country's version of fae folklore), but for the sake of this AU, all fae will reside in the fairy realm. I just couldn't find a lot of info on that specific topic, lol.
OKAY. So like... the Neighborhood is actually a place inside of the Fairy Realm and humans can only enter by stepping inside of a specific fairy ring. Since it is so difficult to find a fairy ring, much less find the exact one to enter the Neighborhood, it is very rare for a human to visit the Neighborhood. Usually, only other fair folk visit. The only human resident of the Neighborhood is Eddie, who forgot everything about his life outside of the Fairy Realm due to being trapped for so long.
The circular positions of the houses in the Neighborhood each match a mushroom or group of mushrooms in the fairy ring that allows access to their portion of the Fairy Realm. The size of the building determines how many mushrooms of that pattern will be the same and the colors of the building slightly match the colors of the mushroom that represents it.
Wally acts a bit like the community leader of the Neighborhood, making sure everyone does their assigned tasks and is in charge of events such as festivals, celebrations, and the likes. Home acts a bit like a living portal to the human realm, as well as a way to spy on the going ons in the human village nearby their fairy ring.
Most of the neighbors will try to get humans to eat food that they make. They will go as far as to hold little festivals whenever a human enters their world. Eating any food they offer you, however, will forever bind you to the Fairy Realm. This is exactly how Eddie got trapped in the Neighborhood. Due to most modes of transportation between communities in the Fairy World being too difficult or downright impossible for humans, it will inadvertently trap you in the Neighborhood, as well.
Main thing I have to do first is figure out which type of fair folk/fae everybody (except for Eddie, since.. well... he's human) shall be. Gotta research them to be sure I feel like they fit the characters as best as possible with the information we currently have on the Welcome Home characters.

Thinking about last summer when I infodumped about the magnus archives to my brother and his wife while I was staying at their house, and then later during dinner when I got startled from dropping my fork my brother asked me which fear entity that fell under.

The obligatory evil plot of this episode has involved stealing a whole lot of crabs.
To make an evil crab cyborg.
Out of all the crabs.
