Inktober52 Week 1: "Wild"

A bit late to the challenge, but whatever, getting started is the important part. I didn't get to do last year's #ink52 due to work-related stuff, but part of my New Year's resolutions involves creating more art. So I'm gonna make AT LEAST a half-assed attempt to do the 1 drawing per week, though not necessarily follow every prompt. This piece was inspired by an old legend a former friend told me years ago, dubbed "The Perry County Witch." Based in a small town in Perry County, PA, this legend dates back roughly a couple of centuries. The PCW lived in the neighboring woods and one night every year, the locals would all hunker down in their homes (after having placed protective measures on the entryway of their homes) and refuse to leave until daybreak, for the she would abduct any individual unfortunate enough to be out at the time. Some were unlucky enough to meet this fate - travelers, drunk patrons wandering about, or families who plum forgot to hang up their protective seals. One day, a traveling Catholic priest passed into the town. After learning of the disappearing townsfolk, he was understandably skeptical about their claims of the witch, but offered to investigate the woods to put them at ease. Setting out into the wilderness, he set up camp at the area where she was allegedly spotted, arranging a blessed circle around his site. And waited for night to fall.

Night came, and the priest was scribbling in his journal to pass the time when he sensed an ominous presence approach, followed by the snapping of twigs. Glancing up, he made eye contact with an older-looking woman with long, dark unkempt hair. But as she approached the light of the campfire, he noticed that she was walking on all fours, her arms and hands naturally long for a human, each skeletal finger ending with long filthy nails. As he stared further, he realized that on her chin was a third large eyeball. Her two main eyes, sunken and beady pinpoints of light, kept pinned on him as she slowly circled his encampment, attempting to find a break in the protection circle. The priest immediately began scribbling notes of the woman's description, also quickly sketching her likeness. Satisfied with the information recorded, he took out his vial of holy water and whipped some of it at the witch, causing her to shriek and hiss in pain as she scuttled back deep into the woods. The priest went to sleep and returned to town the following morning to report his findings. I'm not sure about the validity of this story, as my research on and off over the years didn't turn up anything related to the Perry County Witch. There could be something or my former friend could've just been full of shit. Either way, it was an interesting story at the very least. 🤷🏻‍♀️
