It's such a shame that the colour scheme is so ugly but MK 42 really is one of the best Iron Man armours. In-universe, it's a reasonable step forward from suitcase and weird-flying-pod-wrist-detecting-thing armours and it's also a really elegant way of doing CGI while keeping the realistic look.

The one downside of the CGI point is that all previous armours got sort of retconned to fit MK 42's design philosophy for the big fight scene at the end of Iron Man 3, which kind of defeats the purpose of the first suit-up scene, which implies MK 42 is the first of its kind.

But aside from that, it's easily a top 3 Iron Man armours if you ask me, along with MK 46 and MK 3. Nothing tops MK 3. I will die on this hill.

Also I'm gonna get crucified for this but Iron Patriot fucks. Way harder than the later War Machine designs (the first one is still the best one)

Anyway can you tell I rewatched the Iron Man trilogy? Cause I did.

So for all people talk about how Tony got those 5 years of happy retirement, it kind of seems to me like he wasn't all that retired. Consider:

-Tony's obviously been building and advancing the Iron Man suits as always, going from the Mk 50 on Titan to the Mk 85 post timeskip.

-War Machine's been advancing too, with Rhodey going from the Mk 4 in Wakanda and the Thanos hunt to the Mk 6 post timeskip and breaking out Mk 7 after he has to abandon Mk 6 in the ruins of the compound.

-Something in those 5 years obviously happened to make Pepper do a 180 in her stance on the suits. "You're not ready to settle down and have kids while still having the suits" into "I was wrong to ever try and stop you from being Iron Man" seems like a shift that doesn't just happen on it's own. (And Tony coming back traumatised and battered from Titan honestly seems like it would make Pepper double down on the 'No Iron Man' stance, so it can't be that.)

-Tony thinks that making a suit for Pepper is a good idea, which obviously probably wouldn't fly with post-IM3 to IW Pepper. Which would mean that her newfound pro-Iron Man stance isn't something completely new when she encourages Tony to join the Time Travel plan.

-Tony has facilities capable of building Iron Man suits at their lake house. It's not clear if Rescue is nanotech like the Mk 50 and later IM suits or just the Mk 46 era solid IM tech like Rhodey's War Machine suits sport, but either way building it in his garage indicates that the house's 'garage' is less a shack to hold cars and more like the basement facilities from Tony's old Malibu house.

-And the kicker: Morgan is familiar with Iron Man. She knows what the suits look like to dress up like him, and she knows enough about her dad being Iron Man to want to dress up as him. Doesn't seem like that would happen if Tony hung up the suits theoretically for good in the five years post snap.

To me, that all adds up to there having been Iron Man adventures during the post snap world, and that Tony and Pepper finally realised that being Iron Man and having a family are not mutually exclusive. And I'd kind of like to see/read some of those be it comics form or an animated thing or whatever.

When it comes to the Marvel Superhero Iron Man everyone has that one suit that stands out for them. Whether it’s because of the look or a specific story/scene, we all have that one that comes first to mind when we think of the character even if we really like 25 more. I don’t consider the comic and movie iterations one-and-the-same so when I think of the comics and it’s the Modular Armor (Model 13) and for the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies it’s the Mark XLVI (46.) The look of the XLVI has that perfect mixture of more “muscular” shape that the XLV brought while having a color scheme and helmet design that feels more like Iron Man than what I felt was more Ultron-esque in the XLV’s. As for its role in the movies, “Captain America: Civil War” was a good movie but Iron Man’s fight against Captain America and The Winter Soldier was my favorite scene in the entire history of the MCU to-date from both a cinematic and emotional perspective. Needless to say the Mark XLVI is “it” for me and I was extremely happy to get the opportunity to purchase this Hot Toys iteration (note that this is the full figure and not the power-pose statue piece.) Before even breaking this piece down I will say that it’s incredible and I get giddy every time I look at it on my shelf. Presentation: The box itself is very nice and thick and the style of it with it splitting between top and bottom halves to open is also very neat. The styrofoam container for the main figure/accessories and the plastic clamshell for the additional accessories underneath are both extremely well done. Everything comes well packed and protected. The paint job and finish on this piece is just phenomenal and stands out before you even remove it from the styrofoam.

Build: The Hot Toys Iron Man Mk. XLVI is a mixture of plastic and diecast both in the inner frame and outer “shell” of the figure. Because of this, it’s fairly hefty which feels great and worthy of its higher-dollar price point. The joints are a mixture of friction and ratcheting and hold up very well. Even the accessories like the stand are extremely solidly built/painted and not a single piece on this feels like it has gotten less than the utmost effort by the designers. And I don’t even know how to accurately describe just how amazing the LEDs on this piece are. Even though putting in the batteries can be a bit of a hassle just because of how small and numerous they are it’s incredibly worth it once you do. 28 LEDs through the head and both front and back of the figure’s body and limbs literally light up a good portion of a dark room.

Accessories: This piece comes with a **lot** of stuff so I’m copying the accessories section from the SideShow official listing:

– Four (4) pairs of interchangeable hands including: – One (1) pair of fists – One (1) pair of hands with articulated fingers and light-up repulsors (white light, battery operated) – One (1) pair of battle palms with light-up repulsor (white light, battery operated) – One (1) pair of hands with life-like thrust fire effect

– Interchangeable shoulder armor (regular, missile firing) – One (1) sixth scale Captain America helmet – Two (2) life-like thrust fire accessories attachable to the feet of the figure – Debris diorama figure stand with a Mark XLVI nameplate and the movie logo – Tony Stark head sculpt

All of the accessories are well done and well made on top of feeling like actual necessities for the figure. My favorite piece is definitely the unmasked Tony Stark head which is in my opinion the best sculpted and painted head I’ve seen on a Hot Toys figure. The bruised eye and pained-but-determined expression really encompass the character in the latter portion of “Civil War” to the point that its how I display it (along with the alternate, damaged chest piece pictured in the gallery.)

Articulation: This Mk. XLVI has tons of articulation points and even thinks like an extending abdomen and drop-down hips to increase its range of motion however I do wish that the range went further, particularly in its abdominal crunch. It’s “pretty good” in this area but I feel like some slight tweaks could make it great.

Overall Score: 8/10 – Hot Toys absolutely nailed this in terms of build and aesthetic. The diecast Iron Man Mk. XLVI is nothing short of amazing in the way that it looks, feels, and plays however, I do wish that it had a bit more range in terms of articulation to really nail some of those key poses in a more natural manner. Overall it’s still an amazing toy and worthy of being a centerpiece display.
