Azula And The Tides: The Most Misread Scene in ATLA
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before:
“The tides scene shows how irrational and spoiled Azula is! She got lucky! She endangered her whole crew for her pride!”
Or any similar variation.
The only problem is it’s not even remotely close to true. Let’s talk about that.
Here is the scene in question for reference:
youtube
Seems pretty straightforward, right? I mean, the Captain warned Azula about the tides and she put her ego before reason and made the crew take a huge risk. Horrible leadership and narcissism on her part, right?
Except for one little detail.
Azula was right.
Remember in “The Storm” when Zuko demands his ship chase after the Avatar and his crew warns him that it’s a fool’s errand because they’ll surely perish in the storm? Zuko stubbornly insists his goals are more important than anyone else’s lives, including his Uncle, and demands they drive recklessly into the storm. Sure enough, the crew nearly perishes in the storm, just as predicted, and Zuko is humbled enough to even rescue his Lieutenant that he disrespected earlier in the episode.
I bring this up so we understand how ATLA sets up and then demonstrates its narrative cause and effect. It’s rather straightforward as, after all, this is being written to be inteligible to children.
So what happens with Azula’s ship when she demands they dock right away despite her Captain’s warnings?
The ship docks without incident or injury.
In fact, they dock stealthily enough that neither Zuko nor Iroh see Azula coming and she’s able to surprise them. How would this be possible if the Captain had been correct in his assessment and Azula had just been acting out of ego?
I’ve seen some people argue that Azula just got lucky, like a drunk person driving home in a car. Not that I expect the average person to have extensive knowledge about docking a ship, but it demonstrates a severe gap in knowledge of the subject matter. When it comes to the tides you cannot half-ass it. Either the tides are in or they’re not. Either they’re high enough or they’re not.
And if they’re not, what happens? The rocks you can’t see beneath the waves will shred your ship apart and you will get stuck or outright sink. Best case scenario, if by an act of divine intervention you avoided all the rocks, you’re still screwed because your ship is going to get beached and tip over. Especially with a ship of that size!
You cannot squeak by here. Even with all of our tech and modern day ships, if you don’t respect the tides, you’re going to have a bad time. There is no avoiding this.
It boggles my mind why people assume Azula is the one in the wrong here and not the Captain who is later shown to be so incompetent that he spoils the mission. He was talking down to her and she rightfully put in his place. Cold and ruthless as her method may have been, she was making it clear that she is not to be talked down to or to have her authority questioned. An important skill for a young leader. Look at the comparison with Zuko who couldn’t wrangle his men. They were about to mutiny and would’ve if Iroh hadn’t intervened! Azula has no Iroh to fall back on. She has to manage on her own. And she does! In this same episode we are shown that Azula is a perfectionist who can’t tolerate a single hair out of place. But somehow we are supposed to believe she is also reckless and incompetent? I don’t think so.
We also know that Azula canonically attended the Royal Fire Academy for girls. This wasn’t some preppy finishing school, it was an intense military academy with survival training so deadly that Rangi described having to eat worse than rats to make it out alive. We know Azula excelled in school. Why wouldn’t she know something as basic as how to read the tides? That’s seafaring 101.
Combine that with the fact that all their best naval officers probably perished at the North Pole and it’s easy to glean that this Captain isn’t exactly their A-Team.
So what IS the point of this scene if not to show Azula being irrational, egotistical, or incompetent?
Remember our comparisons to Zuko? The point of this scene is to show how much better and scarier of a leader Azula is. It’s a simple way to convey to the audience that unlike Zuko, Azula *can* and *does* command like a true military leader. She is therefor a more frightening and dangerous opponent for our heroes to face than the already dangerous Prince they’ve been battling since the previous season.
I don’t think this misinterpretation would’ve ever spread so far if some fans weren’t dead set on trying to tear down Azula for the simple crime of being better at things than fan-favorite Zuko.
And I say this as someone who adores Zuko.

When Actors Respect The Community
AND Don’t ‘Other’ The Love Story
Tumblr media
👤Do you feel any pressure taking on the task of telling a queer story on network TV in a time where the LGBTQ+ is still clamoring for increased representation on screen?
OS: I think there's a responsibility to tell the story the right way. And for me, it's a balancing act between telling a queer love story but also just telling a love story, and not always needing to focus on the fact that it is a queer story. It's about finding that balance between wanting to highlight it but also not wanting to differentiate it from what media in the past may have seen as "normal," and just telling it as a story that is one of happiness and joy — and just focusing on the emotions and the human beings at the center of it. It's been a really nice gift: the opportunity to delve into this storyline, to be involved in telling it. I feel very proud of the work and just to be a part of it.
Tumblr media
👤 So where does Buck go from here?
OS: I mean, we're only a couple of episodes ahead of this at the moment, so I don't know too much except that this next episode follows what I believe is quite a natural progression: Certainly for somebody finding this in their 30s, they'd be questioning, right? "What does this mean?" "Who am I?" "What about all these things that I thought to be true of myself?" And so there's some reckoning to deal with in the next episode, and then leaning on the people that are closest to him, and finding the right moments to open up and how much to share. And then in typical 9-1-1 fashion, having his family support him and make him feel the best version of himself.
Oliver Stark, actor who plays Evan ‘Buck’ Buckley on 9-1-1 talking with Entertainment Weekly April 4th 2024

Alright i'll bite...
Can u share your top 3 reasons why you chose Rizzles for your fanfics??
I don’t think I can stress enough how much I did not choose Rizzoli & Isles.
This is not like an “I didn’t choose the thug life, the thug life chose me” thing except it kind of is. I am Rizzles Tupac. But seriously if you go back to like July of last year, before I started watching this show, I had never even CONSIDERED writing fan fiction. I did not write for fun. I did not think about writing for fun. Writing was completely not on my radar.
I have what I call my kitchen shows which I put on when I’m making dinner or doing the dishes. The key with these shows is that they’re not supposed to be very good. I had tried to do it with Bosch but that show was actually too riveting so I put on Rizzoli & Isles one day in search of a dumber procedural.
And then suddenly I was fucking hooked? And secretly started writing fan fiction? I was like midway through the third season when I started AGVK. True story I took my wife out for a date night and after a couple of margaritas and a beer I was like “I have something to tell you, I’m embarrassed but I can’t keep it from you any longer” and she probably thought I committed a crime or was having an affair for a second.
ANYWAY. This show really snuck up on me. I truly cannot believe how much of my waking life is spent thinking about a fictional cop.
But I do want to answer your question so I will tell you the top three reasons why I’m STILL writing Rizzles fanfics:
1) there is just so much to work with and so little to get in the way of it. They spend all their time together and have barely any men in their lives and that’s just so good. Like I don’t think there’s another non-canon wlw ship where they’re more married. Supercorp is so popular but I’m watching that show right now and had to go through SO MANY EPISODES where they didn’t even interact. I think OUAT has them interacting plenty but there’s more forcing them into romances with men? Idk I haven’t watched it. But Rizzles is just…they’re each other’s entire world. It’s great.
2) we are so starved for butch representation on television that literal super model and girly girl ANGIE HARMON walking manishly is among the best I can get. I cannot believe how gayly she landed this character, it baffles me every time I watch.
3) They’re both just so hot. Sasha Alexander couldn’t be more my type. Every time they put her in a sheath dress and a pair of nude stilettos I practically fall to my knees.
Bonus 4th reason: the Rizzles fandom is small but so friendly and lovely and receptive. I have a couple Supercorp fics planned and I know that fandom is way way way bigger and I’m excited to see what kind of reception my writing might get over there but I know it’s not gonna be as cozy as this little community we have.
As always, I hope you were looking for an EXTREMELY in-depth answer! Thanks for the ask.

Doc Ock x Symbiote!Reader
→ Author’s Note: Requested this from another writer (that’s also really cool), and decided to also write my own version. No specified version of Ock, pre and post evil versions are mentioned.
→⚠ Warnings ⚠: unethical science,
→ Fandom: Unspecified
→ Genre: Headcanons
→  Pronouns: They/Them
Tumblr media
The Backstory:
You were a scientist who worked on studying the organic matter samples Colonel Jameson had brought to earth. Unfortunately, one of those samples was capable of a lot more movement than originally believed.
Long story short: Some of it bonded with you, you quit soon after due to not wanting anyone to get suspicious then started working at Oscorp.
Pre Tentacles:
He, and almost every other co-worker, is a little bit curious about the fact that you quit your last job to work at Oscorp but drops the subject after the mention of an NDA (which wasn’t true)
Notices you talking to yourself a lot, but doesn’t question it much. Most of the scientists he works with have an odd habit or two.
You totally slip up and call yourself 'we' in a conversation, which he does bring up
"There's a perfectly reasonable explanation if you give me enough time to think of a lie."
On to the actual dating
You guys keep it on the down low and by that I mean absolutely nobody knows. He likes privacy
His love language is talking about his experiments and asking you about yours (and physical touch but that takes a while)
The symbiote makes the relationship difficult, especially because he doesn't know about it
You don’t ever tell him about the symbiote, the symbiote speaks for itself (literally, and to a disastrous extent)
He takes a while to process it, but once he does he shares his work on his tentacles
He tries not to think of the moral implications of the whole situation because he loves you and knows you wouldn't do harm intentionally (he is wrong)
Post Tentacles:
Ok so in most versions Otto goes missing for a brief time after the accident™
So what happens in this brief time?
Chaos. Pure chaos and fear
Not only are you distraught and angry but your symbiote also formed an emotional attachment
Absolutely no one gets a break. Criminals, civilians, co workers, Norman even Spider-Man
The streets are filled with nothing but fear and it stays like that until you get your Otto back
At which point:
Yay, evil power-couple time!
I mean what did you expect, you’re the host to a symbiote that eats people to survive and likes to commit crimes; there is almost nothing he could do that you either 1) haven’t already done or 2) had to literally fight yourself not to do
He changed after the accident, and it reminds you of when you first bonded with your symbiote. You try and be patient, knowing that he's still the same person, just with a different attitude and outlook on life.
With some communication skills being flexed, the relationship works out well
He also gains a new thing to be mad at the world about (Tabloids keep calling him a monsterfucker and so does your Symbiote)
It's that whole Roger and Jessica Rabbit thing except no one knows who's Roger or Jessica at any given moment.
You keep working at Oscorp to keep suspicions low and provide insider information
Yes, the suit makes you look very good - now do you want to be part of the Insidious Sinister Six or not?
You don’t want to fight Spider-Man head-on most of the time (much to the Symbiote's chagrin) so you agree to work with them, but not be on the team.
Anyway you end up kicking ass and now half the team is scared of you (Much to the Symbiote’s delight) (remember that episode in the 90s show were Venom Spider-Man almost kills Rhino and Shocker? Yeah you do something like that)
His ego may be nearing the size of the sun, but even then he’s slightly scared of what would happen if your symbiote gained full control. (Your symbiote likes him so his nerves are good, but still makes sure nothing happens that affects your memories)
Speaking of which he wants to do some - totally not evil because he loves you- experiments revolving around the Symbiote
Overall, the relationship is wholesome, if not unconventional.

the return of past ghosts, spencer reid.
summary: in which your father manages to escape prison and makes it his mission to reunite with you.
warnings: typical cm violence like mentions of blood and murder, also reader’s father is an unsub (kinda like ashley’s backstory) and he escapes prison like the unsub in ‘the silencer’ episode. oh and not yet proof read.
notes: not sure how i feel about the plot/etc but enjoy!
Tumblr media
You still remember that day. The day the FBI showed up to your door and arrested your father for crimes you never knew were committed. Brutal crimes, crimes that still make you sick to your stomach when you think about them now. Ever since that day, you’ve devoted yourself to helping save people from unsubs like him, working as hard as possible to achieve this and joining the BAU later on.
“What’s wrong? You said this is urgent.” You walk into the conference room, Spencer following behind you, just as confused as you.
The two of you were woken up in the middle of the night by the usual sound of a case alert, immediately leaving your shared apartment to go to the office.
“(Y/N).” Hotch starts, his facial expression even more serious than usual. “What’s going on?” You sit down next to Spencer and Jennifer. “Your father escaped from prison, he had a medical emergency and the ambulance that was transporting him to the hospital for proper care, ending up crashing. Police got to the scene and he wasn’t there.” Hotch continues, his words immediately leaving a bitter taste in your mouth. Everyone glances at you, Penelope finishing the debriefing of your father’s criminal history. You don’t even hear her, every movement and sound around you fading, except for your loud and rapid heartbeat.
“You can’t work the case, (Y/N).” Hotch explains. Those words catch your attention and you look up from the table to him, “You’re too connected, it’s dangerous.” Spencer interrupts, turning to face you and holding your hand in an attempt at comforting you. “Well, what’s happening then? Has he done anything yet?” You manage to breathe out, ‘anything’ referring to if he’s hurt anyone yet. “So far there’s been no signs of him, but we believe he might try to contact you.” Hotch replies.
“He doesn’t send me letters, he doesn’t care about me, never has. I can’t see him trying to talk to me, especially if he somehow found out I’m working with the FBI.” You shake your head. A part of you does believe he’ll contact you, but you don’t want that to be true, so you dismiss the idea. “You’re the only family member he has left. We’ll send agents back to your house to keep you safe and alert us if he tries to contact you.” The older agent nods. “He’s not family.” You stand up and quickly leave the room, your boyfriend quick to follow you, “Hold on, (Y/N)!”
You stop and turn around to face him. “Stay inside the apartment, keep your gun with you at all times. You know I wish I could stay with you but I need to-” Spencer starts, his tone sounding worried for you. “Spence, I know. Treat it like any other case, okay? I’ll be safe, Hotch said there’s going to be agents at the apartment as well.” You takes his hands into your hands and squeeze them to reassure him, pressing a kiss to his cheek and softly smiling. “I love you.” He says, “I love you too.” You reluctantly walk away.
“(Y/N).” One of the agents in your apartment walks into the living room, “Agent Hotchner needs you on the case, immediately.” He says. “What happened?” You immediately get off the couch, the other two agents leading you to your front door, “You father has been located, he has a hostage. He will only negotiate if he sees you.” Another agent explains, your eyes going wide, unable to speak, preparing yourself for the situation ahead of you.
Getting out of the car, you’re greeted by your team and numerous other agents, everyone surrounding your dad, their guns aimed at him. “Put this on.” Derek slowly walks up to you, his gun now holstered as he helps you put on a bulletproof vest. “You alright?” He asks, “I think you know the answer to that.” You let out a shallow laugh, trying to remain calm. “Stupid question.” His smile doesn’t relieve your anxiety, his eyes revealing the true nature of how uncertain he is at the moment. “You got this.” He places a comforting hand on your shoulder, before moving back to his position from before, everyone moving over so you can walk towards the unsub. When you see the man, he’s holding a knife up to a lady. You try to hide the disgust on your face, closing your eyes for a moment, wishing it was just a really shit nightmare. Unfortunately, that’s not the case, as you open your eyes seconds later, still met with the sight of your father in front of you.
“Darling.” His low voice sends shivers down your spine, a fake comforting expression on his face. “Hi, dad.” You fake a smile just like he did. As much as it pains you, you have to play into his games, rather than angering him. “Oh, I’ve missed you and your angel smile.” He steps slightly closer to you, the lady he’s holding onto letting out muffled cries as he places his other hand over her mouth. You slightly turn back to glance at Spencer, earning a nod from him before you move back around. “God, look how much you’ve grown. A big time FBI agent, you know, when you were younger you wanted to be a princess.” He laughs. “Yeah, dreams change when you grow up.” You pause, “Especially when you find out your own father is a serial killer.” This time you don’t bother hiding the anger in your tone, “Now, let her go, and we can talk some more.” You add. “I’ll let her go.” He pauses. You know there’s a catch to his offer. “If you replace her.” He seethes. “Fine.” You manage to mumble, taking your gun and tossing it to the side. You slowly walk towards him as he roughly shoves the lady away, gesturing for you to come towards him.
Just as you reach your father, you turn back around and make eye contact with your boyfriend, then quickly crouch down, covering your ears as Spencer shoots the unsub right in the chest. “It’s over.” You whisper to yourself, letting out a breath that you feel like you’ve been holding in for a lifetime. Your team runs towards the body, finding out if your father is dead or still alive, but Spencer runs to you, kneeling down and pulling you into a hug from behind, tightly holding you as you process everything, “It’s okay, you’re okay, I got you.” He whispers.

Hazbin Hotel Episode 4 Discussion:
I’ve seen a lot of nasty posts floating around today criticizing Vivzie and the show. I’m not here to discredit your feelings, but I think that the darker tone of episode 4 merits some constructive discussion beyond a knee-jerk, pearl-clutching reaction.
From what I’ve seen, the biggest complaint from viewers, myself included, is that this emotional episode with some fairly intense depictions of SA/r*pe was not prefaced with a content warning aside from the usual small text in the top left corner. I truly do believe Amazon should correct this going forward so that viewers can feel better prepared for tone shifts between episodes. That being said, here are my defenses of the show.
Hazbin Hotel has had a huge fan following since the pilot release back in 2019, which set the tone of the show. Between the pilot and Addict music video, people had a pretty clear indication of the adult themes that would be present in the project moving forward. The show is set in Hell, the place where the world’s worst sinners are trapped in the afterlife. This is not an excuse, this is an explanation. There are going to be several characters with tainted morality, some of whom are irredeemable. That’s why they’re in Hell. This show is not meant to glorify sins, but to shine a light on flawed, relatable characters who will grapple with ethics and other struggles and come out changed in the end.
“I can’t believe Angel doesn’t leave his situation and stays stagnant.” Have you ever lived through/witnessed abuse? It is never this easy to sever ties with an abuser. They position themselves in power to control and manipulate, and many times, it’s not physically safe to get away from them. Also, this has been ONE EPISODE, you cannot expect a character with deep trauma to be totally different after a 20-30 minute episode. Angel’s character arc will take time, but his interaction with Husk at the end is an important first step in that direction.
“So Angel is supposed to just get over his trauma because he and Husk sang a song about it?” No. If that was your takeaway, I’m truly sorry you missed the point. Husk is the only person who’s been raw and blunt with Angel (on screen) about dropping the Angel Dust persona and being Anthony. Angel is used to having to put on a flawless, sexy act at all times, so much so that that’s how people really believe he is at all times. Husk sees through this mask Angel developed to protect himself and tell him through their song that imperfect and broken as he feels, Angel isn’t alone in struggling with feelings of powerlessness and addiction. He’s not comparing his loss of overlord status to Angel’s horrible SA, he’s finding common ground and empathizing (the best way a Hellbound soul can). This song wasn’t a solution, it was a gateway to vulnerability and the beginning of change for both characters.
“We’re expected to just ship Huskerdust after Angel has done nothing but sexually harass and push Husk’s boundaries?” No. That’s absolutely the wrong reason to ship anything. While it’s true that in the first three episodes, Angel sees Husk as eye candy who might be able to distract him from his suffering, episode 4 brings a necessary shift in their dynamic. Angel is used to everyone around him wanting Angel Dust, the pornstar. But for the first time, someone doesn’t want that coveted persona, and he can’t comprehend this. Angel has no control over anything except the act he keeps up, so he clings to it as a false sense of power. It’s only after Husk tells him that he likes Angel for everything he is off camera that Angel starts to treat Husk with respect, which will pave the way for any future Huskerdust shipping.
You don’t have to agree with what I’ve written, and I absolutely don’t blame you if you’ve realized this show is not content you can comfortably consume, but please understand that depicting difficult material is not the same as glorifying or excusing it. This episode was hard for me too, because I care about Angel Dust, and I am so eager to watch his growth as the show continues. My heart goes out to anyone struggling from triggering this episode caused. I hope you’re able to safely navigate away from this show while respecting the viewers who continue to watch.

Miranda Richardson Vs. Diana Rigg
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda
Miranda Richardson - (Blackadder, Absolutely Fabulous) - Known for portraying baddies in her youth and mean but sexy milfs now, she is more than just a pretty face, shes an accomplished comedienne!
Diana Rigg - (The Avengers, Diana) - Honestly? Just check her out as Emma Peel in any episode of The Avengers. The character herself was a legend - an exceptional spy, wonderful fighter, certified genius, a true feminist role model - not to mention a renowned sex symbol (that leather catsuit... heavens help me...) and fashion icon. As for Diana personally, she was once described by Michael Parkinson as "the most desirable woman he ever met, who radiated a lustrous beauty". She could pivot from funny quips and endearing jokes to stone-cold badassery like it was nothing, and she looked stunning either way. Whenever I look at a pic of her, I have this feeling she's planning some fun mischief and I get the strongest urge to ask her to take me along. Need anything more? Here, have some pics:

Additional propaganda below the cut
Diana Rigg:
When people think of The Avengers, they think Steed and Peel (or they think the marvel property but that’s neither here nor there). I know people who thought Mrs. Peel was the ONLY woman Steed worked with, Diana Rigg was Just That Good (she was only on two seasons!). She was one of those actors that could so perfectly play comedy in any form, her dry, sardonic wit was marvelous, but so was her physical and slapstick comedy, and she could do drama too! If you’ve seen her in interviews you’d also know how fabulously humble and kind she was. I don’t know if I’ve ever been more attracted to a TV woman than I’ve been to Diana Rigg. Some photos of her:

Gorgeous, sexy, competent, superior, so much leather. Diana Rigg as Emma Peel in the Avengers was foundational to my sexuality and personality. She's classy, she's cute, she's cocky, in one episode she whips a bunch of guys while wearing a corset and a spiked collar...

One thing I find interesting about the 80s scenes is how everyone appears to have changed enormously, except for Hawk. I really love the 80s scenes in general, as they make me super interested in seeing how all those characters get to that point. The relationship between Hawk and Tim is so different to what we have seen in the 50s – much more balanced. But it is mostly Tim that has changed and grown.
Now, I’m not saying that Hawk is still the same person he was in the 50s. He’s clearly older, appears to be overall more mature and calmer, and even vulnerable to some extent. Yet his flaws remain. He’s clearly terrified of being outed, struggles to show emotions and prefers to run away and disappear. He’s still stoic and self-centered.
Marcus used to be very similar to Hawk, but has clearly changed. Mostly, because he has allowed himself to love and be loved. Tim is not the naïve, gullible man we’ve met in the first episode, but he’s still very passionate about the people and causes he cares about.
This reminds me of what Mary said in episode 2 – that hiding a part of yourself is different from killing it. And I believe that the reason Hawk has been unable to change and grow is because he's been trying to kill that part, again and again.
I don’t want to turn this into an analysis now, as we still have some episodes to go, and analyzing the 80s scenes is almost impossible without knowing what has actually happened. And I don’t want to rely too much on the synopsis for future episodes and other stuff without seeing it play out. But it is clear that Marcus and Frankie have decided to love each other, building a loving, lasting relationship. Tim has chosen to be authentically himself, just as he’s been craving to live like in the 50s. I feel like he might be outed against his will at some point. But even if that turns out to be true, he has still decided to openly be himself, fighting for what he believes in.
Hawk has chosen to kill a part of himself – not necessarily his sexuality, as he still has relationships with men, but any form of a deeper connection. And I feel like you can tell that he is regretting it, by the way he's observing all those openly queer people.
Maggie has accused him of trying to clear his conscience, and I don’t believe that she’s wrong. But I also don’t think that Hawk came by just to say that he’s tried. I think he decided to visit Tim, because a) he wanted to see him for himself, probably hoping that he wasn’t actually doing that bad, and b) to hopefully receive the opportunity to make things right. Realizing that Tim is in fact dying and that there would not be a lot of time left to make amends, he decided to stay. But I also feel that he wants to spend time with Tim. Ironically, I think Hawk is now in the position that Tim used to be in – yearning for something he can’t have. When he sees Marcus and Frankie together, he sees a life he has never dared to live. And now, there is no time to live it anymore, even if he dared to. And as Tim does not have much time left, Hawk chooses to spend it with him.
But in the end, Hawk is still the same man he’s always been. Tim and Marcus have changed immensely, mostly because they decided to not kill a part of themselves. Hawk has decided to try and kill it, and has therefore never been able to grow properly, at least in regards to Tim. And it makes it impossible for him to do the right thing now, as he repeatedly returns to his old ways.

Hold On, Hold On
pairing: Cowboy!Din Djarin x Fem!Reader
summary: Your cowboy leaves for another bounty and you face how fragile a home can be
wc: 4.7k
warnings: 18+ only. MDNI, old west AU, semi established relationship, violence and town in peril, deep yearning, light angst but happy ending, heavy make-out session that gets a bit heated and spicy at the end
a/n: this is based off the season 3 episode ‘the pirate’ except with bandits lol, the title of this is from another neko case song of the same name (no surprise) I have a whole little collection of Cowboy Din pieces but this works as a good stand alone! Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy & biggest thank you to my cowgal forever @skeletoncowboys this is for you I love ya
Tumblr media
The wilderness calls to your bounty hunting cowboy once again.
“Don’t know how long this one is going to take. So I’m having the kid come with me.” Din tells you, his black bandana covering his face.
As much as you understand, an ache swells through your chest fast.
Would this be the last time you saw him? Saw either of your boys that have become beautiful fixtures in your life?
Something as dangerous as a storm rips through your mind. This all is temporary and you knew that.
Nothing is sure or set in stone with a man who chases after demons in the desert.
Din’s occupation as a bounty hunter meant he jumped around from town to town, never settling in a place for too long. Even with a ward in his care, you understood there was no need for him to grow roots in a particular community.
The only reason why he often brought his bounties here was because the mayor of your town was a previous member of the same bounty hunting guild Din is in. You never even knew bounty hunters held guilds. But that is the life you are wading through now.
It’s the life that’s led you to this, to seeing Din and the baby off on their journey.
You kiss the kid goodbye. His sweet pudgy cheeks puff up so warmly when he smiles at you.
“Keep an eye on your dad, little bug,” you tell the baby as you poke his sweet little nose. He giggles and it’s a sound you will treasure.
“Alright kid, let’s go.” Din croaks low as he shifts the baby up into his arms.
You haven’t been able to look Din in the eyes since he announced his departure. You don’t even know why this particular trip is affecting you so much.
“I packed a few extra slices of bread.” You explain rapidly. “And I know you’re still upset that I’m having you take one of my quilts but trust me, I’d rather you two have it-“
He cuts off your rambling quietly with the soft whisper of your name. It strikes fast like lightning shot through your spine.
Now you can’t help but turn your gaze up to him.
The whispers around this man painted him to be an omen because you could never see his eyes.
That part is true. The shadow of Din’s hat casts a deep shadow heavily blocking any chance of getting a good look at him in the eye. Then his bandana completely hides him from the nose down. At times he truly exists as a faceless phantom, a wandering ghost that has now found residence in your heart’s chambers.
But right now, this phantom stares directly at you and you can clearly see the eyes of this righteous man.
You’ve seen his face, kissed his soft lips. But his eyes…
Those rich soil eyes hold so much emotion and now hold your entire soul captive in their gaze.
You say nothing, don’t even know what to tell him.
A goodbye feels too simple. A please come home safe doesn't sound true because was this really his home?
Would this ever be his home?
And could you ever house a man as wild as a tumbleweed?
“Thank you.” Din speaks first. However, that simple thank you is all he says.
Your arms ache to embrace him. Your lips wish you were brave enough to yank the cloth across his face down to kiss him with every inch of your love.
He suddenly nods at you and you only nod back.
Without another word Din jumps onto his horse. The animal, which you believe hates you, now lets you softly pet him. You wish you could appreciate this small step but heaviness clogs your heart too much for any other emotion to pass.
The baby makes a soft whimper and both you and Din snap your attention to him. With his chubby sweet little fingers, your little bug simply waves a sad soft thing at you. He’s so smart, the kid, and you swallow back hard as you wave back. Your eyes return to Din.
The shade of his hat now has you searching harder for his eyes.
This time you can’t find them.
Nothing else is said.
Din simply kicks his heels against his horse and then begins a slow ride away.
No breeze of the wind carries them. This time it is only the stillness of the desert. For some reason, as you watch them dwindle further and further away, the stillness scares you more.
Tumblr media
Summer beats down an unforgiving heat.
The air gets thick with the dry dust and you’re thankful for the cool nights that settle in. The early evening breeze from the open window already feels refreshing as you finish buying a few provisions from the commissary.
The clerk, an older man whose wife you are fond of, gently says your name hesitantly. His eyes are even a bit nervous and you ready yourself for whatever he asks.
“What…whatever happened to that young babe you had with you?”
You had previously been in the store many times with the baby happily cuddled in your arms. You used to cover him with a small light quilt to keep him safe from any curious eyes. You didn’t want them recognizing him if they saw the baby with your bounty hunter. But of course, the sight of you suddenly with a new babe did spark a few curious conversations.
Now your lips twitch but out of a fondness soaked in an aching sadness.
You haven't seen your boys for three months.
It’s the longest they’ve ever been gone. Not even a letter has been sent your way. But then again, you don’t take Din as one to write letters. The panic, the sleepless nights worrying if they were alright, all those emotions bleed into a numbness now. You simply wade through it all like trying to find an exit out of a sandpit slowly sinking you.
Swallowing the canyon sized lump in your throat, you simply give a brave false smile to the clerk staring so worried now.
You remember once jokingly telling him you had grown the baby in your garden. After all, you had first found the little terror eating your carrots.
“The wind swept him away from me,” you reply and you even hear the hollowness you cannot hide in your tone.
The clerk curiously frowns confused but his eyes seem to read past your brave face. He comfortingly pats your hand still on the counter and wishes you a safe walk back to your cabin.
With a grateful small grin you move to head out of the store.
Then the air bursts with a violent and loud crack.
Tumblr media
Bandits are not a new occurrence to you or to the town. Once in a blue moon, a couple of them would arrive, make a ruckus at the saloon or unfortunately leave the town with more than they came with.
But the bandits arriving now come in a wave, like a mass of locust swarming in so fast you didn’t have time to think. And you didn’t. The explosion comes and you and the clerk give each other a petrified look before dashing outside.
Smoke rises from the edge of town and your heart sinks horrified at the chaos quickly consuming. The raiders ride in fast. The sticks of dynamite in their hand speak of a sinister threat of what was to come if anyone tries to stop them.
You move fast, trying to help your dear clerk to his house to be with his wife. You try to keep low. But when you are up against a swarm, it’s hard to outrun their staggering numbers.
Anywhere you turn the raider’s sinisters faces laugh proud and wild from on top of their horses. Some of them even chase on foot like released devils. It’s a bedlam choking your throat in panic.
Leave. You have to leave, find shelter or at least hide in your home.
Thankfully a group of you, including Mayor Karga, band together and flee fast from the town out past the outskirts. You all make camp on a secluded hillside that overlooks the town.
In the dead of night, the town illuminates a destructive crimson that has your legs wanting to give out.
“Don’t worry everyone!” Karga with his steady leveled heads guidance calls out in the night to you and the others townsfolk. “Before we evacuated I sent a telegram to my best man! He will come!”
For some reason your mind immediately flashes to Din.
You almost want to laugh. Of course your love sick heart would clutch onto the idea of him during a perilous moment of turmoil. He was a known fighter, though you had never seen him in combat. But a sharp internal voice striking as sharp as a rattlesnake tells you not to put your faith in bounty hunters.
Not even Din.
You squeeze away the tears clouding up your eyes and try to sleep alone under the desert’s ever watchful eye.
Staring up at the clear beautiful sky, you watch as the stars twinkle down below.
There were children’s tales about wishing on stars, on how seeing one fly across the sky was the reminder of how quick and fast wishes come. You remember even telling that story to your favorite little carrot stealing bug.
Emotions clog your throat even more at the thought of the baby and his father.
Something in you whispers to make a wish. That maybe at this hour of feeling so lost, a wish is all you have.
But again, wishing on stars, wishing for bounty hunters to make a miraculous return from the horizon, is for children. And you are too old to hold onto wishes when your town faces a real chaos that wishes might not be able to maybe save.
A day passes among the hills.
The next day, talk bubbles among some of the townsfolk to try and take the county back. But even you know the ammunition would not withstand the sheer force of the bandits.
And the bandits are apparently a stubborn group.
Their leader, a terrifying man with a wild beard by the name of Gorian Shard, announces with a loud voice to Karga they will never leave.
“A fair retribution for you not serving my men and then discovering your precious bounty hunter killed more of my comrades!”
Your heart again jumps at the thought of it being Din.
But your mind races to the worst possibilities. Did he encounter these raiders and not make it out alive? What about the baby?
You refuse to let yourself dwindle on those thoughts. You can’t. You have to find a way to keep moving, find a way out of this situation.
The townsfolk grow restless and worried, more so than you.
“Now everyone please, just hold on. I know help is on the way!” Karga urges, a voice of reason and faith. It settles everyone enough as another night among the wilderness arrives.
This time clouds cluster in the skies above and hide the stars. You think it’s fitting as you go to sleep with tears in your eyes.
You think of Kargas words, the idea of holding onto faith. You suppose even now a part of you still greedily clutches onto a last bit of hope that you’ll see your cowboy again.
You glance up at the cloudy sky again.
Even though there are no stars out, your heart now sends out a whisper of a wish. It’s a simple one.
What else do you have to lose making a wish now?
So you wish for safety - for you, for the town, and for your two boys that you hope more than ever are alive.
Tumblr media
Soft low mummering wakes you up. Above stretches a soft periwinkle blue morning sky. When you rise you find so many staring down towards the town.
When you go to see what has everyone in a commotion, your breath gets snatched right out of your chest.
Din is fast on his horse.
He moves rapidly between the buildings and among the shadows that you believe you might have just imagined him.
But then, he swiftly rides out from a sharp corner and shoots three bandits down.
The towns people cry in absolute cheer but your eyes are on the cowboy moving like a phantom. It really is him.
Din.
He’s not alone though. More riders move in to take down the bandits but everyone including yourself focus on the mystery rider.
“Isn’t that the man with no eyes!? The one with the face you can’t even see?” Someone whispers.
“No…can’t be.” Another voice argues.
Karga suddenly chuckles, warm and reassured. “Trust me, my friends. That is indeed the same bounty hunter. He’s ours.”
A sharp flash of possessiveness rises.
You want to correct the Mayor and say he’s yours. That bounty hunter is your bounty hunter, the one who’s son eats from your garden, the bounty hunter who’s favorite fruit is oranges, whose face you knew and existence is now carved a deep cavern in your heart.
Din.
Your bounty hunter.
He’s a wonder to watch in action. Smooth, swift, firing with precision and maneuvering with an almost grace.
Your throat goes dry thinking of how strong this cowboy is the same one who once got flustered when he told you he can’t dance.
The bandits are effortlessly taken down by Din and the reinforcements he brought. Peace returns with the warm dawn. A beautiful relieved joy bursts through the crowd as everyone starts the descent back to the town. Your legs barely carry you but you eventually find yourself there among your town.
Rubble lines the streets. A few shops including the cantina took the worst damage. A steady rebuild is already being discussed among the townsfolk but your attention rests entirely on the black bandana wearing man.
He’s alive.
The baby sits cozy in his arms, smiling as bright as a new sun. Your mind can’t even process the thought of Din riding into battle with the kid.
Then a woman walks towards him.
Her gait is steady, confident. When she removes her hat to wipe her face, striking auburn colored hair falls from under her hat. She is lovely and it dawns on you that she was with the reinforcements.
You can’t help but admire her for being a part of the group who help liberate and retrieve your home. But when she moves closer to talk to Din, even playfully smiles at the baby, your heart starts deflating.
Soon Karga walks forward to speak to the hunters and the townspeople.
The entire time he talks you stay hidden against the shadow of a building, watching. The woman stands next to Din the entire time and grins so fondly. That look only intensifies when she goes to stare at him. Her eyes are molten and when Din turns back to her, he nods.
You hate that you cannot see his eyes.
The wilderness is not a forgiving thing. It brings in many travelers that simply come and go and it seems Din might be one of them. Because of course he would be close with another, a true cowgirl who can handle the wilderness and his ever changing lifestyle.
He never mentioned another woman in his life, but you suppose you wouldn’t either if you were in his position.
You wonder now if your existence to him was a simple way to pass the time, if you were just a quiet pit stop not ever meant to hold him for long. You try not to let these acidic jealous thoughts poison you, but it’s too late.
Before Din can turn to look towards the crowd, you turn on your heels and walk away against the shadows of the building.
You go to help the clerk, his sweet wife clean up the shop as best as you can.
“I wonder if the bounty hunter we’ve seen around here with the black bandana is handsome?” The clerk’s wife offers trying to lighten the space and her husband chuckles.
You stay quiet while your heart whispers out that yes, that bounty hunter is quite handsome.
When exhaustion mixes too dangerously with the heartbreak still brimming in your body, you decide to slip home.
You don’t even realize how long this day has been until you step out of the shop and find the sun already making her way to bed over the horizon.
It's comforting in a strange way.
The sun will rise again tomorrow, a new day, and so will you. You will move on.
You walk forward, straight out of the town and to the outskirts to where your cabin sits. You want to cry seeing your home thankfully still standing. A few animals are gone. Some crops and even stored goods from the shed have been stolen. The inside of your house is a ransacked clutter.
In the stillness, among the settled destruction, quiet tears sting your eyes.
You don’t know if it’s from the exhaustion of these past few days or the ache knowing your bounty hunter might be taken away from you by something fiercer than the wilderness.
He’s alive, your heart whispers.
You got your wish.
And that is true, but heavens above the truth hurts a violent ache.
Footsteps against the porch outside make you jump and whip around to stare from inside your house. There against your open doorway stands a beautiful shadow.
“Din…” Your voice even sounds hollow saying his name.
He pulls his mask down. His stunning handsome face stares at you wide as if you’re the phantom. Then he moves with a blinding speed you witnessed against the bandits.
In quick steps he is suddenly before you and then, you are in his arms.
He smells of gunpowder, sweat and something faintly him. It’s intoxicating and you can’t even stop yourself. Your arms wrap around him tight.
He breathes your name out and you think it might even sound like a shaken watery prayer.
“I didn’t see you among the others and I thought…I thought the worst, honey.” Din speaks with a heavy tone as thick as a torn bush.
That sweet but cursed nickname ignites a tender warmth through your body.
“I did too, about you.” You reply back small and in a waterlogged voice. “Haven’t seen you in months and I thought…”
You can’t even utter the words.
You instead simply allow yourself this moment to hold him tight.
“I know.” Din answers low. “The job took a lot longer than I thought. I’m sorry.”
“But then Karga sent me that ‘gram.” His voice steels hard.
So, it was him that Karga was speaking about.
“And I had to come back.” Din breathes out and squeezes you in his arms. His face even burrows against the top of your head and your eyes go wide.
Quietly your mind conjures up the image of the beautiful woman with the sunset colored hair and your eyes go misty.
So many emotions swirl in you that you can’t even swim against their tides to steady yourself.
A soft coo comes from the door now and instantly you and Din pull away from each other. Waddling in with wide eyes is the baby.
Without hesitation you leave Din’s arms to rush to the kid who once he sees you lights up. Then his arms reach out wide and grabby towards you. So effortlessly you scoop the little critter in your arms and pepper kisses across his face.
His sweet little coos twinkle like the sweetest wind chime.
“You came back just to eat more of my veggies didn’t you, little bug?” You laugh watery as the baby giggles so bright.
For the rest of the evening the little babe stays cozy in your arms refusing to leave even as you and Din slowly start cleaning up the cabin.
It’s a slow, quiet process.
Neither of you ask how the other is, how the other has been these missing months. The tension in the air clouds with a thickness you don’t know how to navigate.
Eventually the baby falls asleep quickly and happily snuggled in the makeshift bed.
Exhausted and in a type of trance all you can do is plop yourself on the edge of your porch. Din with his boots echoing on the wood quietly moves to sit beside you.
“Are you alright?” Din surprisingly speaks first in a comforting and low tone.
“Yeah it’s just… it’s been a long day.” It’s been a long couple of days, a couple of months and now, your ghost is materialized beside you.
“I bet.” Din comforts you so gently. “Don’t worry. We’ll get this place back to the way it was, honey.”
We will.
He included himself in those plans.
“You don’t have to stay too long,” but you reply low into the early evening air. “I understand your work keeps you busy and…”
The words become barbed and cut your throat on the way out.
“I know you had to come back because Karga sent out that distress signal. But I know this isn’t your home.”
Bounty hunters don’t stay in one place for long. He’s teaching you that.
And besides, what home could you truly give him?
The one you have now needs major repairs from the damage done by the bandits. Even before then your life compared to his is a simple mundane quietness that he might grow bored of.
Among the wilderness, the mirage is a sea of deception. It distorts the landscape before your eyes and for some reason that has you thinking of the times Din has returned to you from other jobs. You suppose that is what happened with you and Din. You wandered too deep into an unbelievable daydream and got stuck in the mirage, in the illusion of building a life with this man.
Din is still so far away, just out of your reach shimmering in the distance and untouchable.
After all, your bounty hunter is considered a ghost.
“I…” Din’s voice catches on itself and when you turn to him, the look on his face breaks your soul. His deep soil eyes are glossy, soaked with tears. His mouth opens in a sad frown.
Din swallows hard. Then his gorgeous sun kissed features frown even as confusion flickers in his gaze.
“I did come back for Karga, yes. But I came back because my home was in danger. Because you were in danger.”
His voice is clouded with conviction but running through it is an undercurrent of hurt.
Tears start to stream down your cheeks as free as rivers while you stare at him.
“You had to come home.” You croak the words out and a wild adoration resonates through your body.
Din nods firm, resolved.
You don’t know who moves first, who strikes first, but it doesn’t matter. The two of you are clutching each other and Din’s mouth kisses yours with the same wild power he shows in combat. He’s unrelenting and desperate but you suppose so are you.
The nights were long alone with your hand and simply thinking of his broad back, his beautiful thick neck, the feeling of his strong hands against you. And now, he is real solid flesh and blood beneath your fingertips. His tongue licks into your mouth trying to taste and consume everything you have. Your hands run to his hair and softly his hat falls away leaving you the bare face bounty hunter who you love entirely.
You clutch onto his shoulders and suddenly pull him close not even caring where you are.
Your back hits against the wood of the porch as Din leans down above. Din groans loud when his lips kiss your neck tasting the salt of your skin. Your eyes close in bliss.
He kisses a fiery path down your neck to your shoulders.
“Can I remove this, honey?” His voice is a debauched croak as he tugs at your garment blouse. Those deep eyes of his peer up at you beautiful fathomless abyss you want to fade into. Once you nod quickly he slips your blouse down exposing your chest to the evening air.
You wonder if a wild spirit has possessed you to let Din do this on your front porch but you embrace it. Especially when his tongue begins circling your nipple. Your mouth presses tight to and not let a whine escape you.
He suddenly kisses your breast with tenderness. He’s soft and lets his tongue trace a mindless path against your skin. It makes your body melt. Then he wraps his lips around your nipple and sucks loudly.
Your body leans up trying to get closer to him, trying to grind against any part of him, to get relief.
Din becomes a man possessed himself, licking and sucking both of your breasts until saliva coats them both
You sigh his name to the wind.
He finally draws back to stare down at you. He has never looked more beautiful. His eyes are completely blown out like a moonless night staring at you with pure devotion.
You lean up kiss him not even caring at how cold the air is against your bare chest. You need to be near him, need to consume him as much as he’s already consuming you.
Then the crunch of footsteps on the gravel approaches.
The sound galvanizes you both in a frenzy.
You rapidly yank your blouse up. Din effortlessly leans across you fast, almost covering you, as he whips to face forward. You realize it’s a type of protective move that makes your heart swell.
“I hope I’m not interrupting.” A woman’s voice arrives amused.
Now scrambling up, you gently move Din away. There standing a few feet away from the entrance to the porch is the woman with the sunset hair.
She grins a coy knowing thing and your heart drops.
You stare at her petrified. She simply grins warmer. Then she winks at you before turning her gaze to Din.
“I just wanted to let you know that myself and a few others are heading back to camp. Don’t want to keep my dear wife waiting too long after all.” She chuckles. “I’m assuming you’ll be staying here.”
Wait, wife? Confusion creeps in hearing her words.
“Yes.” Din replies with a curt nod.
“I figured.” The woman smiles and then flickers her attention back to you. With a poised warm expression she nods to you and you nod back, a bit stunned.
“Take care Din, enjoy your time back home. We’ll see you soon.” She says with a deep kindness and you don’t miss the way she phrases Din being back home.
“You as well Bo.” He bids her goodbye.
The woman, Bo, gives you a final warm grin and then walks to her horse you can spot faintly in the darkness.
“Who was that?” You have to ask.
“A good friend. She’s married to my people’s blacksmith. The two of them were the ones who rallied the reinforcements that helped me today.” Din explains simply.
Your eyes go wide. All the jealousy feels embarrassing now and you want to bring that woman back so you can both thank her and apologize.
“I’ll have to thank her and the others soon.” You mutter and Din hums a quiet agreeing noise.
“I would be honored to introduce you to them.” Din affirms.
The confusion you had quickly turns into a slight amusement tickling your lips and a small giggle even almost escapes you.
This day has been a whirlwind finally setting you down on your feet and now here you are, with your cowboy.
So you slide closer to him on the patio and curl your arms around his torso. Your body leans and curls against his back.
Closing your eyes, you burrow your face against Din’s strong solid frame. The fabric of his under shirt smells faintly of sunlight and something uniquely Din.
You kiss his back with the gentlest of pressure and Din draws your arms around him closer. He exhales a deep sigh you feel being so close against him.
A soft summer breeze of the desert breathes new life through the air.
“We’ll have to fix the fence tomorrow.” Din quietly notes and you hum in agreement.
There was much work to do. You even dread for a split moment thinking of all the work that has to be done in the heat tomorrow. But you also imagine the baby wandering around babbling so sweetly as he wears Din’s way too big hat…
And Din being by your side every step.
You squeeze him tighter, a silent apology for ever doubting this incredible force of a man.
“Welcome home.” You whisper to him.
Din’s hand squeezes yours.
“Yeah…M’home, honey.”
In your arms, you have caught a phantom of the wilderness and you plan to hold onto him as long as you can.

“Poison” and how it speaks to all types of abuse
Hi there! I’m posting again. This is a small analysis/commentary on how the song Poison from Hazbin Hotel describes not just sexual and drug abuse, but other types of abuse as well. If you haven’t seen Hazbin Hotel or haven’t heard the song, I’ve put a link to the song below. Even if you don’t watch the show the song is amazing and I highly recommend it. Note: this is not the official episode music video, which is triggering to people, this is the before episode release version.
I also made another post earlier on my opinions on episode 4 of Hazbin Hotel. Give it a read!
youtube
Ok, so I’m going to cover some very specific lines and moments in the song. The majority of my analysis focuses on verse two and the the final verse.
This song at its core is about abuse. Angel Dust’s type of abuse is a combination of largely S/A along with physical and verbal Abuse by his pimp Valentino. But if you analyze these lyrics, this song speaks to all types of abuse and abuse victims and/or survivors, except for a few lines that are highly specific depending on situations. I’m going to focus on how this song can speak to domestic abuse victims, myself specifically. If you do not feel comfortable hearing about the following triggers then please scroll on and have a good day. You have been warned.
So context before I get into this: I was raised with a mentally ill parent as well as victim of my other parent’s former Fiance who also verbally and emotionally abused but the two of us. My mentally ill parent suffers from untreated unconventional borderline personality disorder, known as BPD. My other parent’s ex Fiance suffers from grandiose narcissistic personality disorder, known as NPD. I am no longer in contact with the ex Fiance and have no plans to see them ever again. However, I am still suffering from my parent with BPD, specifically over the holiday. We had a major fight because they believe my other parent is truly the abuser in their reality and by taking their side, I was starting to abuse them as well. This has caused me to (at least temporarily) cut off the unhealthy parent and live with the other one full time. And the unhealthy parent is a master at verbal, emotional and psychological manipulation.
Now getting onto the actual song:
Whenever I listen to the back half of verse 1 into the first chorus, I really relate to the lyrics through personal experience. It starts at the following line:
“I shoulda known that this would happen,
“I shoulda known it when I looked into your red-hot eyes
“Spewin’ all your red hot lies”
Now let’s go back to the lyrics and how it relates to me. As part of their BPD, this is especially true, and true for those who are involved with family/spouses/loved ones who are verbally and emotionally abusive. I believe any person who has different under an abuser will relate to this simple like. At some point we know the pattern, we know the signs for when we “fucked up” as it were. And we know at some point, consciously or unconsciously, that our abuser is lying.
“What’s the worst part of this hell?
“I can only blame myself.”
This line can be relatable depending on the type abuse you suffer from. In Angel’s case, he signed his soul away (literally) to his abuser. In a way I do that with my abuser every time I choose to go see them and enter that unhealthy environment. The problem for me personally is that BPD does have patterns but I find myself surprised and shocked by them. Know that now I am doing research to try and learn how to properly deal with family members with BPD, but that personality disorder does not excuse the abuse I suffer from t I’ll his parent. Mental illness is NOT an excuse for inflicting abuse, even if it’s as complex or rarely treated like BPD. But every time I go back into that environment I can only blame myself for entering that hell willingly again. Because despite the pain I know they will inflict upon me at some point, I still love my abuser. I imagine this is a similar mindset to what other victims of domestic abuse feel as well. We walk back to our abusers, usually choosing to because we still love our abuser and hope they’ll change and this time they’re telling the truth.
But that’s usually not the case.
“Cause I know you’re poison,
“You’re feeding me poison
“Addicted to this feeling I can’t help but swallow up your poison
“I made my choice and
“Every night I’m living like there’s no tomorrow.”
In my situation I relate to this line INCREDIBLY hard. It’s not just my unstable parent who is abusive. That side of my family has a long cycle of generational abuse that I am trying to break away from. But because I grew up in that situation, despite now knowing how bad and unhealthy it is, it’s what I’m used to. And unfortunately, I am used to or addicted to that chaos. For the past few months I have lived with my healthier parent and during that time, I have developed a non-chaotic, healthy lifestyle. Growing up everything was constantly shifting and changing based on the needs/wants of my unhealthy parent, since I was predominantly in their custody in my youth. Because of this, I grew up used to that chaos, considering it normal and fine, until I was shown another alternative by my other parent when they filed for custody and finally got rid of their own abusive fiancé. But because of the way I grew up, I became used to the chaos, and every time I go back to visit my abusive parent, I run the risk of falling under their spell. And unfortunately, more often than not, I do fall for it. And when I do fall for it, I fall into survival mode once again. This means that in a sense I’m “living like there’s no tomorrow”, like Angel. I don’t think about the consequences of anything other than escalating the situation, of making sure I make it out of there without some sort of fight or confrontation.
“I got so good at being untrue,
“I got so good at telling you what you want to hear,
“I disassociate disappear”
When I enter this survival mode, as I’m sure many other abuse victims and survivors do, I tend to lose myself for a time. I become someone else in order to be who my abuser wants me to be. In my personal case, I end up regressing to a smaller helpless child (not literally, but my body language does, as an unhealthy form of self soothing, being untrue and becoming who they want me to be: someone they control. I tell them what they want to hear, usually that they are right or that their pain is valid and nothing is their fault because they are the victim (which in my parent’s case of BPD is a reality that they ACTUALLY believe). Half the time when my abuser parent is tearing into me or trying to make me feel guilty or into he the bad guy (with depressingly frequent success rates), I tend to enter a sort of humble stage. I disassociate until it’s my turn to speak. I disappear for a while until it’s safe to come back out and say or do something. And when I do disassociate it’s awful. I lose small chunks of time. This has not happened yet outside of these instances of interaction with my abuser, thank goodness, but it is still dangerous to disassociate too often. I’m sure survivors of all types of abuse have disassociated at least once in their time with their abuser.
“So far beyond difficult to resist another gulp.”
Since I grew up so used to this behavior and pattern, it is like fighting my own nature to try to stand up and not fall for the lies. It’s so hard because I still love my abuser but because of their illness and their refusal to acknowledge it or seek real treatment this pattern is unending. It’s hard to resist swallowing down the poison they force in my face and flood me with. In my case, unlike Angel, my form of poison is in a pool, slowly raising towards my mouth, and I struggle not to get it not. And I imaging that’s what most other victims of abuse also feel like. That physical, emotional, sexual, psychological abuse is a poison that if left unchecked or stayed near to long will eventually kill us, either minor abuser’s action or our own.(Note, at the end of this post I have posted links the contact information of various services to help people in these situations, at least for those in the United States). Angel’s situation is also like that too, but he’s also drugged and forced to take poison by Valentino.
“My story’s going to end with me dead from your poison.”
This line hit me hardest out of everything in the song. During the latest fight with my parent, they tore into me overall and so brutally that for the first time in my life, I truly contemplated suicide as a better alternative. The verbal and mental poison they fed me for so long overwhelmed me and I felt myself wanting to die from it. I am not suicidal now, but it was an overwhelming feeling of pain, hopelessness, feeling trapped with no escape (at one point literally when I threatened to go drinking and they blocked the door, which is a tricky situation). If I hadn’t gotten out of then not already had the support system in place that I spend years setting up and learning to build, I may not be making this post right now. And there’s thousands of others like me who are still stuck in that pool of poison, but have already choked too much and succumbed to it. Never forget them.
“Poison, I’m sick of the poison,
“Im filling up my glass but it’s always hollow
“Full of poison, I’m sick of the poison,
“Wish I had something to live for tomorrow.”
And like Angel here, I’m sick of the poison as well, and every other abuse victim of any type can relate to this. At some point nothing helps anymore when you are stuck in the situation long enough. There’s no escape, and everything is hollow. There was a time when I was like this as well. My abuser had isolated me from nearly everyone else in my life save for my healthy parent, and it nearly broke me. But I found a reason to live for tomorrow at the time.
And I hope you can too. If you are reading this and relate to my story, or you heard this song and related to it in some way, then please know you are not alone. This song is not just a bop, it’s a real look at the kind of a severely abused victim that we don’t always see.

I don’t know what made me draw myself to Matakara ever since BUCCHIGIRI?! was first revealed last year in May in the teaser other than cute sunshine puppy boi.
Tumblr media
But after watching many episodes esp the last one yesterday, I come to the conclusion that a lot of his recent actions, be it shown onscreen or subtle, reminded me of Princess Elise from Sonic 06 (yes that one game that drove the franchise to ruin but that’s not what we are talking about)
Tumblr media
I mean 16-17 year old teenage redheads who may appear mature at first glance but deep down, they’re not as mature as you think they are. Elise’s case is that she was forced to rule Soleanna at a very young age and while she is put together, she is also emotionally vulnerable such as when she had repeated visions of the bloodthirsty demon sealed within her kept showing her visions of Soleanna burned to the ground.
Tumblr media
Matakara is of the same vein as well.
Tumblr media
For a long time since visiting the Honki temple for the first time with his brother, Matakara has always sensed the dark shadows watching over him, which made him afraid. Mitsukuni said that the dark shadows appear because of how it sensed the weakness within people’s hearts. And well it is true in some sense in that despite being a pretty good fighter, Matakara is emotionally immature, possibly even stunted.
Right after his childhood best friend abandoned him to a group of older kids bullying them, Matakara believed himself to be weak and kept clinging on to the idealized version of Arajin, which the latter never asked for nor did he lied about. Even after showing off his true colors even back in earlier episodes, Matakara kept believing in him and it wasn’t until Episode 8 that Arajin confessed to him that he is not the cool and strong person Matakara believed him to be.
Tumblr media
This shatters Matakara’s worldview because right after his brother was taken from him to be placed in juvie for maybe 2-3 years, Matakara tried to build himself up and kept on believing that he has to do it for both Mitsukuni and Arajin’s sake. So to hear from Arajin about how the latter isn’t the strong and cool person that Matakara thinks he is, it proved to be devastating for Matakara.
Tumblr media
The way how both handled the inner demons within them (or Ichiya in the case of Matakara)
Princess Elise has been shown initially that whenever her emotions are about to go out of control, she is either shown to clasp her hands together to make sure she doesn’t cry lest she releases Iblis or just hug someone out of instinct.
Tumblr media
But over time, she stopped doing so to symbolize how her bond with Sonic has made Elise to handle her emotions better in a way that can confide it to the person closest to her. The only time it got out of hand is when the villain killed Sonic out of a sneak attack, that was when Elise started crying, which released Iblis.
Matakara is more of a 50/50. He has inner demons in the shadow that keeps appearing out of nowhere and how he is the only one to sense it. Those dark and creepy shadows tend to appear whenever Matakara is down on himself or if there is a weakness. But when he got into Minato Kai through pure hard work and the friends that he have made in Zabu and Komao. And that is when the shadows had stopped appearing for the time being, tho they did not disappear completely.
Tumblr media
However, I want to point out that unlike Elise who managed to keep her shit together despite not having any form of support group except for her servants, maids, possibly her tutors and ministers, she turned out for the better.
Matakara once he got Ichiya due to Akutaro’s manipulations (well maybe it could be Ichiya who knows really), Ichiya does whatever he can to break Matakara’s will and pointing out how things like friendship and kindness are nothing but weakness. The last straw was when Ichiya brought up on how weak willed Mitsukuni is and that is when Matakara succumbed to the anger and hatred that Ichiya has set up, making the blue majinn to take over him completely.
Tumblr media
Anyways TLDR; Princess Elise and Matakara are one and the same IMO, with the only differences on how they handle themselves and their emotional maturity.

So, the Mew thing
Spoilers: he’s fine
Mew by far is the character people theorize the most about. And while for other characters theories lay more in a “why he is the way he is” field with Mew we have a bit different narrative. Summarizing - there is something deeply wrong with him. And while I do love the theories - they are always fun to read - and will never criticize people for making them, I cannot stop thinking about why. What in Mew makes people feel so uncomfortable?
I’ll start from observing some points and then make my conclusions. It’s gonna be a really long one.
Mew and Sand as “normal ones”. From the very beginning these two were commonly read as being pretty normal compare to others. And it makes sense - they both seems way more self-conscious, well-communicated and generally adequate dudes who trapped in the middle of chaos. They are very different but share some similarities in their approach to life. But while with Sand we are quite comfortable - he is this way and it’s fine - with Mew we have some struggles. The wildest take on Sand is him being baseball bat psycho and even with that most people see him having some anger management issues. Mew is, well. He is manipulator. He is mastermind behind every shit happens in the show. He is unpredictable. He is dangerous. We don’t trust him.
Very different approach to characters from the same field, isn’t it?
Tumblr media
The “unreliable narrator” trope. The first episode uses the voiceover as a narration device so we meet our main characters (except for Nick) through Mew’s perspective. He is the one calling names, he is our introduction to everyone (except for Nick), including himself. Then the story shifts to more “objective” perspective - we are shown, not told, so we can make our own consumptions based on characters behavior. But the episode starts and ends with Mew. And that fact makes a lot of people to assume him being unreliable narrator. And, well, he is. So as Ray in episode 4, where we see the same device used the same way.
They are both unreliable. But that doesn’t mean they are intentionally lying to us, or lying at all - that means that they are subjective by their nature (they are, you know, humans). The unreliable narrator trope is widely used in media and can take different forms depending on genre and storyteller intentions. And while it technically is a possibility that Mew is a madman or liar, I would argue that it wouldn’t work in such narrative. Only Friends is not a detective or thriller, it’s a story about 20-something years old boys navigating their lives. Please go read this post if you haven't yet, it explains everything well.
But the thing is, such as with Sand not being questioned by most people, Ray is not too (and that’s good, really, no complaints about it). We believe him - we see him struggling, of course, and we have no reason thinking that something isn’t clear about his story. But why don’t we trust Mew the same way?
And I know that Ray’s story takes place in the past while Mew’s is in present, but we see Mew’s story such as we see Ray’s - we are here watching how it’s actively happening.
We don’t know a lot about Mew. Yes, true. His past and his motivations are unclear, and that gives us a space for interpretation as well as a sense of distrust - while we can assume things about him, we don’t know the truth yet. But we also don’t know anything about Sand. Or Nick. Or Boston. We do know some parts of Top history and partially explored Ray’s, and that’s all by now.
But with any other character it doesn’t bother us as much as with Mew. And, again, why? Is there no reasonable explanations for him being the way he is? Or is the most reasonable explanation - that he is pretty normal a bit fucked up guy who makes some questionable decisions - feels boring? I wouldn’t say so. Again, we are fine with the same type of explanation for Sand.
And now we arrived to the most interesting point that I call
The “he’s not that simple” thing. That statement stands out as the beginning of so many Mew theories. And the thing I honestly don’t understand is: at what point of the story Mew was presented as “simple”? We meet him in episode 1, he is the first person we know, and the show gives us a lot of information about him during that one episode.
He is smart enough. He’s observant type of person but he is also very outspoken. He knows his boundaries and he’s great at setting them. He is quiet, but not shy. He is calm, but not humble. He is also hypocritical and a bit arrogant. He is confident in himself and - am I forgetting something?
Ah, yes. He is a virgin. And I do think that’s what all of that about.
The audience being Boston. For legal reasons: please, don’t speak on me with this one, I truly believe most people aren’t Bostons, it’s a metaphor. It’s fascinating how in the show that was so criticized about being too sexual the vast majority of interest is prone to one character’s virginity. The big problem for some people is not Mew being just a virgin but him being a virgin by choice. He has no problems with it. He is comfortable being a virgin. While other characters - Top, Boston, Cheum - are invested in his virginity, I would say, even more than Mew himself. Top sees it as some prize or whatever. Cheum pushes Mew to “lose it”. Boston has a lot of difficult feelings about it - from supremacy to irritation. He doesn’t understand how Mew can be fine with it. And the audience, well, the audience kind of doing the same thing. I like to call it the “confident virgin” dissonance.
The whole “he’s not that innocent” argument is exactly the thing Boston successfully used with Top.
Tumblr media
Top buys it due to his insecurities, sure. But also due to his biases. He believes Mew being a virgin but he’s very quick to question it. And so as audience.
After episode 3 I said I don’t want to see the video Boston took - I want to know the Mew and Ray story from their perspective, not Boston’s. And while I was glad the show did exactly that, I saw a lot of discussions about the video. Even after we saw a kiss, after Mew told Top and us how it ended, after Mew said he and Ray didn’t have sex - it’s still not enough. The audience don’t trust him.
But why it’s easier to believe that Mew is some devious manipulator than that he is a confident virgin? Why he is not allowed be simply comfortable with his sexuality and physicality while being inexperienced? Why is it such a problem that the writer of the show has to address this issue to the audience?
Tumblr media
Well, I have a theory.
Virginity and slutshaming. There are some amazing points written about slutshaming and how easility we fall for judging characters (read as: Boston and Top) for being sluts (read as: having active sex life with number of partners) here and here. People tend to judge others for their too active or “morally wrong”sex life (non-monogamous, kinky, not vanilla etc). And the same way people tend to question those who don’t have a sex life at all. Virginity is something you should hide, something you want to get rid of as soon as opportunity comes. It’s okay if you are virgin but you for sure need to try hard and fix this problem, you know? Especially in the show like this - celebrating and normalizing sex - what’s up with Mew not jumping on it from the start? Too much sex as not enough sex are basically two ends of the same spectrum. Everything what’s not in the middle feels weird and uncomfortable.
And I think, the show wants us to be uncomfortable with Mew being virgin the same way it tricks us into judging Top being fuckboy. It constantly plays with realistic characters framed by our stereotypical expectations. It challenges us to overcome our personal biases. And it does a great job on that.
Because while we already know Mew isn’t perfect, him being flawed it still not good enough. He is judgemental, he has some control issues, he uses (absent of)sex as manipulation device and those things are working great with what we know about him so far. But there must be something more, something deeply, almost villainously wrong with him, isn’t it? Otherwise we have to do work on ourselves and that’s not the most pleasant thing to do.

beejhawk 👀
LMAO I was just sitting here like "no one even bothers to send me beejhawk anymore" but bless you to the bottom of your pot-stirring heart, anon.
Don’t Ship It
Why don’t you ship it? I have several reasons, which I will get into it, but I'm going to start with this one: I like a happy ending. Beejhawk cannot be a happy ending to me. I'm not entirely convinced any Hawkeye/4077th ship being endgame can be a happy ending, even the ones I like. I want to see Hawkeye move on from the war, which is what GFA is setting him up to do. Beejhawk keeps him stuck with the war defining his life. That's depressing to me. In the larger narrative of Hawkeye's life, it's important to me that the war is unimportant. The war being how Hawkeye met the love of his life gives me the ick. It implicitly suggests the war was somehow worth it. I can't think of a single reason why I would ship it. I think the biggest reason is it's simply too OOC for me. I cannot believe that Hawkeye would be in love with BJ. That is not Hawkeye to me. I actually can believe that BJ would be in love with Hawkeye, even though BJ is extremely straight to me, but I can't see Hawkeye reciprocating, ever. I've read some beejhawk fic and a lot of posts, and the way Hawkeye behaves and is characterized doesn't just feel wrong to me, it feels wrong in the way I hate the most. BJ is usually wildly OOC too. The other big reason is the complete lack of chemistry. They have negative romantic chemistry to me. This is a much smaller reason, but the things people get from beejhawk I get from other ships that make more sense to me. For a best friends ship, I have piercentyre. If I want to ship Hawkeye with someone repressed, I have hawnk or houlihawk. Sometimes I joke about this but it's kind of true that I don't need beejhawk because I have hawnk. The Joke Is Wild? Hawnk did it first. I genuinely do not understand why beejhawk is a ship at all, except that they're the two main guys. If I didn't know how slash culture worked, I would have been shocked that it even existed. In the last few seasons, I'm not even convinced they like each other. I found myself asking "do these guys even like each other?" about the alleged best friends more than once, and I had to actively rev up my suspension of disbelief to enjoy their goodbye properly the first time I watched GFA. I very strongly dislike any framing of MASH as a love story, and I have yet to find beejhawk content that doesn't turn it into the Ballad of Hawkeye and BJ. Piercentyre is fun for me, because it really changes the show very little. Beejhawk requires me to rewire the entire show, and I don't want to. A lot of moments that I adore become less meaningful to me if they're shippy. For example, Where There's a Will, There's a War. "When I wake up remind me to give you a kiss" is an expression of BJ's profound relief and a wonderful resolution to the anxiety and guilt he's been feeling for the whole episode. It's hyperbole that only works because they don't normally kiss or want to kiss. It always brings to mind a lyric from a song about WWII: "and I never kissed so many men as on that afternoon." It's not about romance, it's about being glad to be alive. I just like the show better without beejhawk. I started out a little more neutral and my visceral revulsion built through overexposure. There was also an assumption that you shipped beejhawk that I really resented. Especially because of the implications around it being slash. I am gay, I ship gay ships, I ship other gay ships in MASH. I don't ship beejhawk. I'm not required to ship every single gay ship. So all those beejhawk posts about "gay people love this" or "gay people think that" bother me and turn me off even more.
What would have made you like it? Completely different acting/chemistry. Something completely different from what I ever see the fandom do with it. I could probably be sold on unrequited (BJ's side only) or unhappy ending beejhawk in fic if it was really well done. This is your chance to plug! I think a realistic handling of it would help too. The show gives me a BJ who is as far from leaving his family as a man can be. I need to be convinced that something would change that. Meta claiming he's actually close to leaving in the show does not work for me, it directly contradicts what I see. I need writers to dig into it. Actually show me the dissolution of BJ's marriage, the pain and consequences. Show me how he manages to stay in his daughter's life, if he does. Brokeback Mountain does not shy away from how badly Ennis treats his wife and how absent he is to his children. My experience with beejhawk is that much angst is made of the obstacles to their being together, but they're quickly dispatched with. Tell me what Hawkeye sees in BJ, because I don't see it in the show.
Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it? It inspired me to make these. I've been thinking lately that this lyric fits beejhawk "perhaps we don't fulfill each other's fantasies." If you know me, you know this is something positive from me, because it's from what I think is one of the best songs ever written. There is some interesting potential. Just get out of the true love box! Try something dark, something one-sided (BJ's side), something that ends badly! I do really like their friendship in the first few BJ seasons.

As much as I’ve enjoyed all the confusion and outrage over Sauron’s identity from all sides, like I’ve said here, I think it’s time I throw my hat into the Sauron guessing ring!
Because we all need as much of the fun kind of speculation we can get.
Anyway I don’t think Sauron is any of the characters we’ve seen so far. In fact, I don’t think we’ll see Sauron on screen until season 2! If we’re lucky, we’ll see/hear him at the very end of the season finale as a kind of hook, but right now we will not know for certain he’s here.
Based on the info we get from episode 2, which I will elaborate on below, I suspect that Sauron is already in Eregion and already amongst the jewelsmiths.
Tumblr media
Who would tell you this? Which thrall??
This is not found in any recorded document (or Doylishly, not in any of Tolkien’s writings). Maybe dear old Uncle Maedhros told you this tale.
But that's not it, isn't it? A certain Lord of Gifts has been whispering in your ear, hasn't he?
Tumblr media
Why spring? When 20 or even 30 years is nothing to the elves and you certainly do not have the manpower for such an ambitious building project on such short notice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And damningly, why is this proposed forge in the shape of Sauron’s sigil?!
Spoilers for future events under the cut:
Sauron already being in Eregion but going unnoticed by the people who canonically don’t trust him (Elrond, Gil-galad, Galadriel), because it’s Celebrimbor who is approaching people for this project and making them think it's his own idea, would be delicious drama because it would hurt everyone involved.
Celebrimbor - For… obvious banner related reasons.
Elrond - For aiding evil in the course of duty and letting his admiration and trust blind him. For bringing doom unto the dwarves in the form of 7 rings.
Gil-galad - Because he has unwittingly aided that which has come to destroy his kingdom. Suspicious and politically astute Gil-galad who is already aware that trouble is on the horizon and is doing his best to keep it at bay without alarming his subjects. Except by helping Celebrimbor whom he trusts for counsel, Gil-galad has doomed his kingdom by trusting bad advice. And this would be particularly terrible for a Gil-galad, son of Orodreth, who is most well-known for dooming his kingdom of Nargothrond (founded by Finrod from the prologue) by believing in terrible advice. All Gil-galad’s nightmares are coming true all at once.
Galadriel - Because from episode 1 we see her hunting Sauron across the far corners of Middle-earth. She’s spent so long away from home and has pushed herself and her followers to their limits, alienating everyone around her in the process, because she knows he’s out there. But all this hard work was for nothing, because the call is coming from inside the house and she wasn’t there to stop him.
Everything they are doing, all the missions and goals they have set for themselves? All of this will come to nothing. The road to hell will be paved with their good intentions.
Because… well… They’re Noldor.
Tears unnumbered ye shall shed; and the Valar will fence Valinor against you, and shut you out, so that not even the echo of your lamentation shall pass over the mountains. On the House of Fëanor the wrath of the Valar lieth from the West unto the uttermost East, and upon all that will follow them it shall be laid also. Their Oath shall drive them, and yet betray them, and ever snatch away the very treasures that they have sworn to pursue. To evil end shall all things turn that they begin well; and by treason of kin unto kin, and the fear of treason, shall this come to pass. The Dispossessed shall they be for ever.
Ye have spilled the blood of your kindred unrighteously and have stained the land of Aman. For blood ye shall render blood, and beyond Aman ye shall dwell in Death’s shadow. For though Eru appointed to you to die not in Eä, and no sickness may assail you, yet slain ye may be, and slain ye shall be: by weapon and by torment and by grief; and your houseless spirits shall come then to Mandos. There long shall ye abide and yearn for your bodies, and find little pity though all whom ye have slain should entreat for you. And those that endure in Middle-earth and come not to Mandos shall grow weary of the world as with a great burden, and shall wane, and become as shadows of regret before the younger race that cometh after. The Valar have spoken.
—Quenta Silmarillion, “Of the Flight of the Noldor”

It haunts me that viserys threw a massive hunt for aegon's second name day and then proceeded to ignore him for the rest of his life except to yell at him. Like. Did Aegon know about the royal hunt? Did the people around him mention it? did his mother tell him about it, to reassure him that his father did love him? (or that at least at one point he did) Does he wonder what happened? Does he wonder what happened to make viserys suddenly stop acknowledging him? Did he wonder if his father see something in aegon that caused him to stop loving him when he grew up? Did he wonder if viserys saw him as unworthy of love? Does he have trouble reconciling the image of the distant father he has with the one that apparently existed, long ago?
It haunts me if Aegon was told that he was well-loved his father and by the people at that hunt, when he was only two years old. And yet he can't really believe that, because he can't remember love like that, never been shown that at all from his father. So when the people start to cheer at his coronation, when people are happy to see him despite never knowing him, like they did when he was just a two year old being carried down the carriage, maybe that's the first time he actually believes that the royal hunt really did happen.
given the talk between alicent and aegon in the carriage, i find that alicent would definitely be the kind of mother to somehow soften the blow of viserys not caring about aegon or any of his children with her. i feel like if aegon would say “father hates me”, alicent would either dismiss the conversation entirely or just tell him “that’s not true”. it’s basically what she does in the carriage. and even though that conversation is also to convince herself of viserys choosing aegon, it also shows that she tries to tell aegon that his father loved him.
alicent would definitely care that her children feel unloved and she’d try to do her best to come up with excuses as to why viserys isn’t interested or insist that he does care in his own way.
i’ve said this before, but even though i do not want to baby aegon, or men of the time who obviously were more privilaged, i do think that despite aegon rejecting the throne, there must have been one time in his life when he wondered why was he the first son to be set aside?
again, not babying him as this is something many daughters have probably wondered for years... “why not me?”
but yeah i think there’s a bitterness within aegon when it comes to viserys, you see it in the way he looks at him during the episode 8 speech at the feast. and i think maybe aegon knows of the time when he was shown affection, but i don’t think he likes to think about it just because it was a very long time ago and he’s never felt that again from his father.
i do imagine, as a little HC, aegon in some tavern and someone snickering behind their drink. “look at him, the king’s son”.
(i imagine he’d either start feeling worse and drink more, or he’d be ready to slam another head on the table. there’s no inbetween with aegon lol)
obviously, aegon has never helped his own situation at all so there’s no props to give.
