Hi and Welcome to the new era of chicken karii - sword people because why not (upd: Also I should say that I'll have a pause in my SDJ stuff because I can't play the new demo for reasons beyond me and I'm sad about it)

I played the 'Boyfriend Dungeon' twice (as Alex and Ash respectfully) in 3 days. And the only thing I've learned - Isaac is the best old man and he'll make a great husband :D just saying

First sketches were done after my first playthrough, second - after second ;) I was also going through some identity shift because of my gender fluency and this game and these characters helped me a ton! I'm feeling better just thinking about them and what they told me throughout the game...

These are my personal opinions on the different weapons of Boyfriend Dungeon! (Note; these will not include Jonah the Axe, Leah the Hammer or Dr Jones as they have not been released yet. Also, these opinions are based on how they perform as weapons in my game experience. This does not account for my opinion on them as characters, I will make that as a separate post). These are all based on my experiences, but note that I've used each weapon in varying degrees and have not maxed them all out as of me writing this. I've only gotten Valeria maxed out, because she was my main as a weapon and lover.

Isaac the Estoc: 7.5/10.

Overall, he's a fun weapon. Allows for fast strikes, and his fencing style is rather unique. Not the most fun, but he's certainly reliable. He's the first weapon you use, and he's quite easy to get the hang of, but his single target design makes it a bit hard to handle large crowds.

Sunder the Talwar: 6.5-7/10

I've seen people say Sunder is the strongest weapon stats wise due to his unique bleed ability. However I didn't notice any significant ease compared to the others, he felt quite sluggish, and his damage felt mostly the same as everyone else, his ability to clear enemies didn't come across as easier for me like I've seen mentioned a lot. That could just be due to an error with me being stupid and not using his abilities properly though.

Valeria the Dagger: 9/10

By far my favourite weapon in the game! Her unique ability that confuses enemies when you roll out of their line of sight, makes it super easy to avoid damage, and give you openings to use her Backstab ability which makes all attacks on confused enemies Critical Attacks. The simple strategy of 'roll, confuse, attack flurry, roll, repeat' makes a great method of avoiding damage regardless of large damage pools. Her lack of range is her primary drawback, and her combos aren't necessarily stylish or unique in any way. But her fun and tricky playstyle makes her a treat to use.

Seven the Lasersaber: 8/10

Quite a fun and unique weapon, he has an ability that causes bolts of electricity to chain off enemies when you complete a combo. This makes Seven a great choice for crowd control, as his chain can neutralise multiple nearby targets while only needing to focus on one. Pretty average damage, his heavy combo finisher ends in an AOE attack that damages enemies in a circular radius around you.

Sawyer the Glaive: 6/10

While I love glaives as weapons, both visually and in practical use, Sawyer is quite lackluster when it comes to their in-game usage. They're quite slow in attacking, but have decent amounts of damage. They say it themselves, they're quite unwieldy to use sometimes. However if you prefer slower, wide attacks then Sawyer might be the weapon for you. They have a heavy attack where you throw them in a straight line, much like a spear, and they return to you immediately. This attack leaves you vulnerable until they come back to you, but this is accounted for when you get their unique skill that damages enemies near you when Sawyer returns to your hand. Sadly my limited use of them kinda drags their rating down a bit.

Rowan the Scythe: 7.5/10

Rowan by far is the most unique weapon out of the bunch. They have a mix of basic physical close range attacks, along with long ranged magic attacks. Their heavy combos end with launching a Black Hole towards enemies, which pulls them in and (if I remember) can do small amounts of damage. This is a great option for CC much like Seven, because the black hole allows you to use their wide arcing attacks to take care of the bunched up enemies with ease. Their main drawback is their slowness however, and like Sawyer, my limited use of them lowers their rating as of right now.

Pocket the Brass Knuckles: 8/10

Pocket's attacks cleverly resembles cat claws, which makes sense given their weapon shape. He has quick Slashing attacks that target a small area in front of you, and his heavy combo finisher is especially unique as it sends flurries of slashes in the direction you're facing, allowing you to attack with range that has a wide arc. They have a singular heavy attack that pounces in your facing direction while attacking, allowing you to close the distance on pesky ranged enemies before they can attack first. His main drawback is his mediocre damage, but like Isaac and Valeria he more than makes up for it with his speed.

Twisted Wonderland Characters as Shapeshifter Weapons

Riddle Rosehearts: An actual Chainsaw. Since he can’t turn into a Guillotine to off some heads he chose the closest to that. He’s also loud just like when he yells Off With Your Head!

Ace Trappola: Bat. Classic, looks like he’s the typical weapon for a gang fight, but he makes sure to knock everyone out who tries to make fun of him.

Deuce Spade: Brass knuckles. Just like Pocket (from Boyfriend Dungeon). Good for close combat and to beat up bullies ♡

Trey Clover: Shotgun. He doesn’t like to make a scene, but once he gets angry, he makes sure to destroy everyone in close distance.

Cater Diamond: Throwing knives. Just like how he can multiply himself, he can turn into many knives. You must remember which one is the original and make sure, not to damage it.

Leona Kingscholar: Tribal spear. He makes sure to not let anyone too close to you, but continuously reminds you to keep your distance from your opponent.

Ruggie Bucchi: Mace. It might look funny how his slender body turns into the massive crushing weapon but he make’s sure you’re opponent won't wake up to see him stealing his wallet.

Jack Howl: Giant Warhammer. He ain’t joking around when a fight is about to take place and you need protection. He does feel bad for all the lifting you need to do to wield him, though.

Azul Ashengrotto: Rapier. An elegant looking but perfect weapon if used well. Just like Isaac (from Boyfriend Dungeon), who is also a businessman, they share similarities but are different weapons hence their different approach to business.

Jade and Floyd Leech: Twin daggers. They like to work together, so they appreciate it if you take them to work with each other against your opponent. But you have to co-ordinate your movements well, because if you’re not in sync with them, they might just leave you in the middle of the fight.

Kamil Al-Asim: SwissMiniGun. It’s so small you think it can’t even hurt you. It can still blind you like the actual sunshine Kalim is~

Jamil Viper: Short scimitar. Not too big, easy to hide and good for backstabbing. Sorry Jamil…

Vil Schoenheit: Whip. Just to assert dominance and punish you if you’re not pretty and elegant enough.

Rook Hunt: Traditional longbow. I mean, he already uses one, he should be able to turn into one.

Epel Felmier: Shield. He’s actually trying to protect you so you’ll see how strong he really is with his high endurance.

Idia Shroud: An electrified scythe. He’s like a combination between Seven and Rowan (from Boyfriend Dungeon). He definitely gave himself the electrifying update.

Ortho Shroud: Taser. Small, cute, but deadly since he ain’t just put your opponent to sleep. Thank Idia for that extra perk~

Malleus Draconia: Pilgrim staff. He makes sure to charge himself with magic that is easily demolishing your opponent. He makes sure nobody has a chance to even touch you.

Lilia Vanrouge: Expandable baton. He's smart enough to not look to intimidating until it’s time to show of how deadly he is.

Silver: Knightly arming sword from the medieval period, obviously. You need good physique to be able to wield him.

Sebek Zigvolt: Battle axe. A more old-school version of what Jonah (from Boyfriend Dungeon) is. Heavy weapon and hard to handle, just like him sometimes.

Grim: Flamethrower. He just can’t stop spitting fire, no matter what form he takes.

Description: You're back in town unexpectedly, and only want to see Sunder. You have some things to talk about, but overall you just want to spend some time on the beach with him. It goes better than you expected.

A/N: So I fell in love with a game called Boyfriend Dungeon, and highly recommend. There are some light spoilers in this!! Hence why you have to press the read more. This is purely a passion piece, honestly. (Sunder isn't even my favorite). But anyway if you like fighting games, Soul Eater, cute romance sims, queer relationships, and non-binary representation, I highly suggest Boyfriend Dungeon.

“Even for a vampire, it’s cold out here.” Is all Sunder says when he meets you at the beach at midnight. Exactly what you asked for. You’re not sure why you’re so surprised to see he’s come.

“Sorry to tear you away from a warm bed and body.” You murmur around the mouth of a wine bottle. It was a nasty habit, drinking red wine straight from the source, but glasses seemed so formal right now.

“Cold bed. I wasn’t feeling it tonight.” He grunts as he sits down in the sand next to you, and you glance over at him. He had a shirt on. Odd.

“You come from the club?”

“No. Basement’s still a dunj. I don’t have energy for dancing lately.”

“Oh, damn. I thought we fixed it together.”

“Someone new came into town. They have a lot of fears.”

“They a weapon?”

“No. They’re using me.”

“Fun?”

“Hell.” He groans, falling back. His hair splays behind him and you lean on one hand to look down at him.

“Sorry, Sunder.”

“You know, if you’re back in town, we can go for a romp. Like old times. We can actually get rid of it at least. Damn martinis keep scaring away my customers.”

“I’m not back, Sunder.”

He raises one well-sculpted eyebrow.

“Then I’m really tired, because I can see you right next to me.”

You shrug, and turn back towards the ocean and take another drink. You feel a pinch in your side and you slap Sunder’s hand away, swiveling your head to look at him.

“Hey, that hurt, jerk.”

“Well, you feel real too.”

“Could’ve poked me.”

“Nah, the pinch was for leaving me for so long.”

You chuckle.

“Sunder, you’re a vampire. Isn’t a year basically a minute for you?”

“Not when it comes to you. Any time I’m apart from you feels like eternity.”

He’s not smirking. This would be the one time you want to see him smirk. You can’t face real feelings at the moment, not even your own.

“Sun, I just want to lay on this beach with you, and drink this shitty red wine, and catch up. Then we’ll talk about why I’m not here.”

After a moment of looking intensely at you, like he wanted to unravel your mind and pull your thoughts through your lips, he nods succinctly and lays back to look at the sky.

“New person came. Dunj appeared again. I already told you that. Another dunj appeared under the church too. I’m not helping with that one though, it burns me even thinking of the place. Newbie likes Isaac better anyway, which I’m fine with. Fighting without you just tires me out.”

“How’s Mandie?”

“Moved on for right now. She’ll be back. Think La Rosa was just boring her. I agree. Same people, over and over.”

“Aren’t you happy about fresh blood then?”

“Metaphorically or literally?”

“Both.”

“No. Even a vampire has tastes.”

“What is your taste?”

“They have to be witty. And O negative.”

“Funny.”

“What?”

“That’s my blood type.”

He props himself up on one elbow, facing towards you.

“That’s a fun little tidbit.”

“Damn, didn’t know it would interest you that much.”

“You’re all I want. Why wouldn’t that interest me?”

You bite your lip. He’s all you want too, but you’re just so tired. You can’t keep running, but you don’t know how to stop either.

Being with him means being here for eternity. On this Earth, in this body, in this mind, forever. Can you handle that?

Why is it so hard to say no to yourself, but yes to him?

“Sorry. Got carried away.” You were silent for too long. He fell back to look at the sky.

“No, it’s alright. Just been thinking for a while.”

“Oh?”

“Remember that night? Our first date, I guess you can call it, when you needed a quick drink and went to the alley?”

“Yeah?”

“How am I to be sure I’m not left in that alley?”

He stayed silent, then sighed.

“There’s nothing I can say that can dissuade this fear for you.”

“There’s one thing you could say.”

“What?”

“I don’t think you’ve ever said it before.”

“What is it?”

“I can’t tell you. You have to figure that out on your own.”

You take the last swig of wine. You both stay in silence for a few more minutes.

“Mom died.” You finally say, and run your fingers through your hair.

“Oh…jeez..I’m so sorry, I had no idea.”

“It’s fine. I asked Jesse to keep it hush. He was alright with it, thankfully.”

“Are you alright? Do you need anything?”

“Just you. I just needed you here, with me.”

“Always.”

“Always?”

“You’re not getting rid of me.”

“Then say it.”

You turn to look at him, and his face is pained.

He thinks for a moment, then sighs again, opening his arms. You set your bottle to the side and lay down in the sand, moving to lay against his chest. You’re a perfect fit. You wonder why you haven't done this before.

You listen to the sound of water crashing against wet sand until you can see the first bit of orange glow on the horizon. At this, Sunder kisses your cheek, and you feel his lips ghost to your ear. He murmurs, and you’re barely able to hear him.

“I love you.”

Game 223 - Boyfriend Dungeon by Kitfox Games

What did I think it was at first? A friend of my husbands mentioned this game to me before it came out, so when it dropped I had to check it out! I'm also vaguely aware of some ~discourse~ surrounding this game, so I wanted to see what it was like and if the angst surrounding the lack of content warnings was really as much of a problem as mentioned on the tin.

I won't be able to discuss this game without spoilers, so check the cut below to read my thoughts...

How was the character creator? It's actually pretty solid! You can choose your pronouns and appearance (there are no genders in the game, and your romance options aren't gender dependent) and you have MANY chances in the narrative to define what sort of person you are. I remember that I could choose whether I was a vegetarian, my favorite drinks, if I drink alcohol, my family relationships, my personal history, if my grandma made empanadas, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some. You can also friend-date people! You don't have to romance everyone! You actually can't romance the cat, which is probably good.

How was the game? There are two main halves to the game. The dungeon crawly gameplay felt like an easier, bouncier Transistor? I did not pay much attention to clever gameplay like dodging or parrying and I was able to beat the game without difficulty on standard settings. This was honestly the least exciting part of the game - the only annoying part was that I did have to grind a little at the end of the game which I did not love. Foolishly, I tried to level all of my relationships at the same time - I didn't know that once you max your relationship with someone your relationships with others are easier to develop. I still would have probably liked one more dungeon.

Oh, and you can romance multiple weapons! I didn't see the "polyarmory" pun in the game once which I think was a missed opportunity. I didn't realize at first that this was an option and was pleasantly surprised. As a polyamorous person I don't think this was a perfect depiction (basically, your relationships with everyone else are paralell and there's no direct conversations - just hinting) but it's not a bad take for a dating simulator. Plus an affirming mother figure made me feel warm fuzzies for something I'll never have.

I romanced pretty much everyone and found them all very charming. All of the romances are quite fluffy and sweet - no major conflicts which counterbalances the darker nature of the main plot. My personal favorites were Rowan, Isaac, Sawyer, and Jonah, though Pocket was also super cute. You don't get locked into routes either - I started my route with Sunder as a friendship but was able to turn it into a romance later on.

The music is really nice, and the still art is cute - I found the cinematics a little lackluster.

What did I not love? Overall, since I found the gameplay inoffensive, I think my criticisms boil down to three main categories...

At first, I felt frustrated by the nonbinary representation in the game. The first nonbinary person you encounter (other than the player) is Sawyer, a college student who's quite concerned with social justice and is a little immature. They don't really know how to fend for themselves and a lot of what you do to help them grow as a character is teach them basic life skills. This felt kind of stereotypey to me? I did really like Sawyer though! Later on, I did encounter Holmes (who is only available as part of a DLC) and Rowan (who is hidden off the map and completely missable, but still a great character) and they both balance the nonbinary character scales a little, but I wish Sawyer had either been a little less cliche or that Rowan was less missable.

I also struggled to hook into the storyline with Seven. I thought his character was really cool and I enjoyed getting to know his story, but it seemed a little unlikely to tumble into a romance with a K-pop idol in my small beach town? Also, nobody ever reacted to him being hella famous - even Sawyer kept their shit together and interacted with Seven like a person. I get that this is a silly quibble in a game where a cat welcomes me into its cat dreams, we fight monsters made of my personal doubts, and where I have the option to date a vampire - but it's there.

Lastly, the elephant in the room - the stalking storyline. I don't have a history with stalking, but I do have a history with creepy overly persistent men (and as an afab person, I feel safe saying most of us do). Eric's texts creeped me out so much at the start of the game that I actually put it down at first because I felt kind of panicky. However, I pushed through it - and I wound up really enjoying the game. This won't be the right solution for everyone, and I hate that such a diverse visual novel / fun dungeon crawl is tied into that narrative - but you probably couldn't separate it from the narrative in the same way that you could change the "Mom" texts. I think adding the CW at the start of the game was the way to go. I did like that I had options not to redeem him or apologize to him.

At 8 hours and $19.99, was it really worth it? I really did enjoy this game a lot. This is more for you if you like visual novels and less for you if you like challenging, harrowing gameplay.
