Zuko and Azula in "The Beach"

Lately I think a lot about "The Beach" episode [x], especially about this small detail of great teamwork Zuko and Azula have during the game.

Zuko is looking ahead, directly facing their rivals (who had the control of the ball at this moment) but his body is clearly lowered to the ground, left hand most likely touching the ground, legs bent and widely spaced - a clear contrast to Mai standing near and how he stood before on two separate occasions

which is why I think Zuko willingly create an opportunity for Azula, so she could jump higher - something she definitely used to their team’s advantage. If Azula simply jumped on her brother’s back when he wasn’t expecting it or wasn’t ready, he would probably just fall face down from the impact but as the scene shows, he had no such problem nor was angry about it in the following scenes.

During the game sequences there was no dialogue shown between our protagonists, so it is hard to determine if Azula in advance called Zuko to give her a “lift” or Zuko offered on his own, or did they were that much in sync they just acted without thinking. Regardless I like this few seconds long interaction, because for me it implies how they trusted each other despite all the rivalry and bitterness from previous episodes. Like Zuko trusted Azula won’t use that moment to hurt/humiliate him by overuse of force, the same as Azula trusted in Zuko’s strength and that he won’t mess up by losing his balance. It is a small thing but no less sweet to see them working well together when fighting for the same goal - what reminds me a bit their teamwork from the previous season finale.

Interestingly, it was also the second time Zuko assisted Azula in scoring against their rivals while not scoring himself any point on screen. The first time happened almost right at the beggining of the game (second from total five sequences)

while each girl have the solo sequence of winning a point:

and Mai kicking the ball (and presumably scoring)

while Zuko’s two actions are shared only with his younger sister while there is no sense of competition between the siblings, something contrasting a lot with some previous and later episodes.

Azula is bossy and competitive through most of the episode and her brother lets her be that without a complaint. Azula and Zuko get along pretty well and A) do not argue (with the exception of the campfire scene and then they argue not even for the whole scene itself) and B) don't get on each nerves the way they do in the palace, with Ozai's presence looming in the back of their mind. I absolutely adore this episode, as it humanizes all our Fire Nation characters by showing them as teenagers outside the war zone but also giving us a bit of insight into what Azula and Zuko could be if Ozai didn't pit them against each other. And they could be a great team!

Am I the only one who thinks that the thematic and narrative climax of s5 (and low key the whole show) will be almost a direct parallel to the "You said yes" scene from s2?? Like same exact narrative and cinematic setup of Will being controlled by Vecna to the point where he's nearly gone or on the brink of death, and Mike being able to bring him back to reality with words of love???

Like I low key feel like that scene in s2 was supposed to serve as a precursor and foreshadowing to the climax of Byler rather than just standing on its own as an isolated event. We always talk on here about how Mike's monologue to El in s4 was supposed to directly contrast that scene and demonstrate how false and unnatural Milkvan's supposed "love" is, but we never really talk about just how awkward of a placement it is for the true and "authentic" love confession (Byler s2) to precede the clunky and false one (Milkvan s4). Like, imo it kind of leaves things on an awkward note and kind of hanging.

The only way it wouldn't be awkward or unfinished is if there ends up being a followup scene/parallel to the "you said yes" scene, and I think this is what's going to happen. I think Mike's monologue to El comes after the more romantic, authentic confession not only because it's supposed to contrast it but because the show is serving us two different "choices," two different options for Mike, two different scenarios. Not just for the sake of his character arc but in a meta sense as well, kind of like asking the audience, "which choice makes the most sense for Mike given the events up until now and the themes of the show? Can he be his most authentic and happiest self with Will or El?" And the natural followup to posing this dichotomy would be to answer this question for us by showing us in no uncertain terms why Will makes more sense for Mike as a long-term love interest.

The other reason why I believe this to be the case is because of the blocking of the s2 scene and the way it's set up: with Will being unable to move, unable to say anything or regain any control, and with Mike opening up and being vulnerable about his true feelings for Will [here comes the most important part lol] IN FRONT OF the other characters like Jonathan and Joyce (I can't remember if it was the entire rest of the cast in this scene or just those two?? I think it might've been everybody bc weren't they trying to get Will to communicate with them using morse code? I don't remember lmao) but anyways, I don't think it was a coincidence that Mike gave his grand "Do you remember the first day that we met?" speech not only to Will himself but in front of the other characters. Remember as well that Mike also confessed his "love" for El in front of an audience, and I don't think that's a coincidence either. I think it's leading to a final confession from Mike that will also take place in front of an audience and will serve as the "choice" that Mike makes between El and Will as well as the "choice" the Duffers present as being the correct narrative and thematic choice for the show. It's important that Mike's initial two confessions took place in front of an audience and also that his final one will, because this will also serve as Mike's "coming out" moment to the rest of the characters and to the audience. I think that Mike is going to have a second speech to Will that isn't just "I love you I love you I love you" over and over again like it was to El. It will be sweet and unique to Will and Byler's relationship except this time it will be explicitly, undeniably romantic so that no one will be able to even think that what he feels for Will is anything short of genuine, passionate, romantic love.

I wouldn't even be surprised if what Mike says closely parallels what he said to El except basically the opposite, alluding to the fact that it wasn't "love at first sight" for him but a slow, gradually building and gradually cultivating love that blossomed over the course of his entire life. Instead of "I knew then and there that I loved you" like he did to El, he could say something like, "I didn't realize it yet when I met you, and I'm not even sure I know when it happened, but I think I've spent my entire life slowly falling in love with you." And he says it with tears in his eyes and in front of all of the rest of the characters, who will also be crying (especially Joyce lol). And of course Will will just be sobbing even through Vecna's control over him, but it will be Mike's love that ultimately frees him from Vecna's hold over him. This would make sense, because unlike El, Will's story has never been about independence and breaking himself free, but about him and Mike breaking themselves free through teamwork a la "I think that we should work together. I think it'll be easier if we're a team."

here's the thing. after the van scene being what it was, mike has to find out about will's feelings in s5. that's a given, and it's basically confirmed that he'll find out. he's going to discover eleven didn't commission the painting, and he's going to know will loves him. and with strong, long-held feelings like that involved, let me tell you from real life experience... two people cannot just stay friends. being in love and staying friends is too awkward, too painful. things won't be the same as before. they will be changed irreversibly. they will either go their separate ways because of will's one-sided love being too uncomfortable, or feelings will be reciprocated and the relationship will shift into new territory.

if mike and will going their separate ways and ending their friendship is endgame, why bother to show them drifting apart after the byers' move to california, and then spend a whole season building back up their bond stronger than before…? especially doing it in direct contrast to mike's romantic relationship with eleven being shown as fraught with dishonesty, dysfunction, and insecurity, and on the track to deteriorating in the final moments of that same season? why would you rebuild a relationship between mike and will and highlight its importance, only to drive another huge and unscalable wall between them, estranging them again? that just doesn't make sense narratively and it would be senseless writing. you can't do the same thing twice, leave it unresolved the second time, and end a show like that... unless you're going for a really unhappy and hopeless ending which, i can't believe stranger things could really be the show to do that, especially with two of its main and most beloved characters.

Okay, so I’m a bit wine drunk but I don’t think I’ve ever really articulated why I love Snarry together and I’m currently trying to finish a fic after taking a three-year-hiatus from writing these two, so this is probably a good exercise!

I’m a bit on the older side of fandom, having been a fanartist and fervent reader since 2003, so my connection was really sparked during that time between OOTP and HBP when Snape and Harry were at some of their most clashing and deeply vitriolic, forced together into hateful vulnerability by Occulmency lessons. Every scene between them was electric, laced with tension as we truly did not know how things would go, or even where Snape’s true loyalties lay. He was an unknown, tied up with Harry’s own family’s mysterious past, connected to Harry in a myriad of odd ways that few other characters were, and - as a rivals-to-lovers lover - I was fascinated by him. From that first moment when they lock eyes in the Great Hall and that frisson of pain shoots through Harry’s scar, I desperately wanted to know who the hell this man was and his story. I think a lot of Snarry shippers come to the ship with a special appreciation for Severus Snape’s character himself. He’s such an incredibly drawn character, rich with complexity, complicated and pretty fucked up, with clearly-held passions, hatreds, weaknesses, and motivations. He’s emotional in a way a lot of other characters aren’t, though I think he’d loathe to hear that. And his character voice! It’s unique and pitch-perfect. You always know exactly who is speaking with his lines. Honestly, the way he evolved from a spy/traitor stock character to become so multifaceted and enigmatic is a masterpiece of characterization, and it’s an aspect of why I’m drawn to him - there’s still so much about his origins and well, what his damage was, that we don’t know. Because of this, I especially love Snarry fics that delve into character studies of him, trying to explore all the shadows left behind. I also admit I have a preference for interpreting Snape as morally grey. I like him petty, sharp-tongued, ambitious, with an incredibly liquid definition of what is right and wrong. He’s self-interested, dripping with disdain, and really doesn’t see that as a problem. What happens to him when he deeply falls in love?

I love a ship that makes me work for it. There’s no obvious line of how Snape and Harry might wind up together, so each fic is a wealth of possibilities of bringing these two together despite their roadblocks. As I mentioned, I’m big fan of animosity in a ship. Give me rivals, give me enemies, give me the sparking passions, the sharp fury, the way they stoke each others’ emotions and seek to hurt, the racing hearts, the raised hackles, the intense emotional reaction to another person. Just throw it at me. I devour that shit. I love the messy and taboo nature of their relationship, the complications raising from their age difference, temperaments, and largely similar and shared traumas. There’s an interesting element of Snape being a foil to James Potter, and how that relates to Harry and their past. Basically, this shit is really good potting soil for incredible fucking fics, packed with nutrients.

The shared natures of their traumas, like Voldemort and each being forgotten and abused as children and how they might be able to understand each other and bond from it is also something that’s fascinating to explore. I love when a writer pushes on Snape’s bruises, looking to make them hurt, cracking his sardonic brain open and rooting around in there, and I love when they compare and contrast to Harry’s. There’s a seductiveness to how Snape is so obsessed with Harry, fixated on his Boy Who Lived heroic reputation, clearly dripping with envy. What, beyond jealousy, might draw Snape to Harry and what, other than hatred, might draw Harry to Snape?

It’s all this, the passionate, electric, dangerous nature of their relationship; the way their characters contrast each other yet have surprising connections; and the question of finding solace that keeps me here, 21 years later. I’ve had wines less complex than this ship. They’re fascinating. They’re messy. They’re everything.

the contrast between these two scenes...

you can argue that afo was lying when he told tomura that he was "near and dear to him", but I actually think he was being truthful here. he loves who tomura shigaraki is because he's something he helped create with his own hands and it's who he projects all his own desires/will onto, all so he could become him as he sees the image of tomura as the idealized version of himself. tomura isn't just a pawn to him, he's what afo is putting his whole future on. everything tomura became is what afo wants to be. which is why he was guided onto that path by afo and why later afo took his body for himself.

however when faced with tenko, tomura's core and who he really is in the inside, he has nothing but contempt for him. tenko is nothing afo wants to be and he despises tenko's own desire to be a hero. he doesn't care for who tenko is, only what he wants him to be. he has no use for a small, crying child therefore he only has nothing but spiteful words towards him.

it's sad in that shigaraki really believed afo cared for him as a person. afo was the only one who stopped to help him when he was alone, and gave him a home to live in and guided him to becoming stronger. shigaraki thought that meant he was loved and valued by afo but the reality was that he was being groomed for one specific purpose only and that the plan to take over his body had been in motion before he was even born.

you know, we're so focused on the whole soukoku scene when they fought lovecraft and steinbeck (obviously so cause that was an EPIC scene) that we're completely forgetting the fact that kunikida and tanizaki fought them and won first...

#idk if ive ever mentioned this in a text post or tags but kunikida and tanizaki are such an intriguing partnership?? #like we have this one guy who would sacrifice everything for his ideas... #...with a guy that would sacrifice everything for one person #and yet they WORK somehow.... #we've had more scenes of their partnership in the manga than we've had with kunikida and dazai #which is a SHAME because the latter is SUCH an interesting dynamic #but tanizaki and kunikida intrigue me a lot as well... #because their's is a partnership that seems almost...out of the blue #yet there are definitely parallels and contrasts in there #and there is definitely a shared sense of fondness or something between the two that i honestly think needs to be explored #and i think what's interesting about them is that tanizaki has consistently said he's not much of a fighter.... #and yet he's LETHAL in the battlefield...not really for combat but with all his...sneakiness #i mean i guess if anything this just goes to show how the ada can work well enough without dazai #and that's always a good thing to show? controversial maybe but something about kt, eddie and fabian’s chemistry in 3a just wasn’t quite as good as it could’ve been? like they spent soo much time together in wacky scenarios and in pairs they were really fun and interesting and I just don’t feel like the writing carried that through into the trio??

#house of anubis #this is NOT an invitation to hate on s3 to me #@ that one anon don’t you dare!!! #but I think this is a lot of why 3a felt so much weaker to me than 3b #like especially in comparison to the alfie and patricia duo because they worked SO well together #that in contrast the other three were lacking #like don’t get me wrong it wasnt that bad like it wasn’t unwatchable #but they literally broke into a mental hospital together were locked in a literal crypt over night and schemed to kidnap teachers #and those situations had such interesting potential that I don’t necessarily feel were utilised most interestingly #like one of my fave scenes of the three of them is when eddie fakes hearing frobisher speak #and even that almost fell flat?? #like it’s entirely in character for the other two to be like ‘eddie!!’ but there wasn’t much chemistry behind it if that makes sense #l feel like in comparison to other similar sibuna moments throughout the show that would’ve felt a lot more natural and fun even if it was #still a more serious situation #this post is for my fellow s3 enjoyers just to see if anyone gets what I mean idk #like I understand that there was a lot of tension between them at these times but that could always be said of sibuna #and I think 3b fixing this and using eddie and fabian especially to their full extent is what made it for me #hoa #s3 watch #txt
