Country Lights
It’s a yearly tradition that when the weather gets cold and the nights lengthen, Sydney celebrates the coming of winter with a light festival. VIVID has been an annual event for many long years, although I couldn’t tell you when exactly it all began. During the pandemic years, of course, VIVID was cancelled as people were shut inside, but since the ‘official’ end of the COVID-19 pandemic, VIVID has returned with a vengeance.

Events have even sprung up in other parts of the state of New South Wales. One, of course, was held in the country town of Bowral. Known for its flower festival in October, the town is about a ninety minute drive from Sydney.
So, upon hearing of the event, my mother most definitely wanted to take a look and experience it for herself. She had seen a few videos and photos on the most holiest of phone apps: WeChat and wanted in. Thus, I and a few of her friends were roped in to accompany her for an all-women day trip to Bowral to see the sights and make some great memories along the way!
Of course, knowing that the lights wouldn’t be on until night covered the land, we had set up an itinerary for the day that would take us all around the Southern Highlands.
Our first stop was actually a town just past Bowral. One of my mother’s friends had done a search online for places that would tickle our tastebuds or be visually appealing. After driving down from Sydney, we headed to Berrima. There, we visited a small patisserie shop renowned in the area: Gumnut Patisserie.
As my mother was a lover of all things pecan, she ordered a pecan tart (although a perusal of their website actually advises that it’s a macadamia tart, so who can say), and one of our other members put in an order for a passionfruit tart. Once our coffees, and hot chocolate, arrived, we dug in. After all, life’s short so dessert ought to come first.
Once we had warmed ourselves up, we headed towards Harper’s Mansion. Bult in 1834 by James and Mary Harper, it is now a heritage-listed house. What made it stand out in little Berrima, of course, was the fact that the house was much grander than the other residences in the villages during the time it was built. Most houses in the area were slab cottages. In fact, it was modelled on those favoured by the middle-classes in Sydney with walls that were three bricks thick, laid upon a foundation of sandstone.
After the Harpers passed away, it was bought by the Catholic Church in 1853 nd was used as a presbytery for the nuns of Daughters of Lady of the Sacred Heart. Later, it was rented out before being sold in 1970.
In 1978, it was acquired by the National Trust who repaired the house and it is now managed by local volunteers that provide simple tours of the house. On its land, however, a hedge maze was built along with an impressive garden. The maze, of course, was a must see and our small group of four Asian women found our way to its centre as well as out without too much trouble.

Our tour of Harper’s Mansion over, we decided to take a gander at the Book Barn. The Berkelouw Book Shop is located on the Bendooley estate, which is a winery. As for the book shop itself, it also serves as a restaurant. Sandwiched between the stacks, tables had been placed allowing guests to wander through and pick up whatever they may wish to peruse for lunch or an evening meal.
If there was a place akin to heaven, this would have been it.
From there, we headed to Bowral properly to check out a family-run vintage and antiques market called Dirty Janes. Lunch would be had at Harry’s @ Green Lane in the 2 PM slot. Why the restaurant only had two lunch slots was a mystery but I had to say that its main selling feature, which I wasn’t able to see a lot of, were the books that were crammed on shelves.
But while the ones at Berkelouw could be flipped through and read, I had a feeling that the ones at Harry’s were most likely props to sell a particular atmosphere. Which is honestly a shame.
Still, it didn’t detract me from the collection of knives and beautifully displayed insect taxidermy cases that could have been bought at Dirty Janes. I, unfortunately, didn’t buy anything to commemorate it but I must admit that there were some pretty good paper weights to be had. Although, there were also pinned spiders...and that’s a real big fat no from me because they’re terrifying. AND WHAT IF IT WAS REAL?!
After looking through the wares of Dirty Janes, we strolled through the heart of Bowral before heading to the nearby lookout to see the sunset.
Once the sun had set, we headed to Centennial Vineyards where the light show would begin.
Words fail to describe the beautiful array of lights that shone up onto the sky. In an attempt to recreate the Aurora Borealis, so named from Boreas, the personification of the North Wind, the clever minds at the vineyards used light and smoke. To be perfectly honest, I’m unsure why it was called Borealis as Australia has its own name for phenomena that can be seen in Tasmania: Aurora Australis, but I suppose Borealis is the one that most people can identify.
This, however, was no show. Rather, it was a whole event with food trucks and space for families to lay out the picnic blanket to watch the sky above them change from red to green to blue to purple. Were it not so cold, it might have been a lovely night out.
As it was, my hands were near frozen until one of our group went and bought us some hot tea from a nearby vendor.
After about thirty minutes of admiring the colourful night sky, we headed back home to Sydney, which was a whole lot warmer than frosty old Bowral. And where I could catch up on some gaming as I raced to finish off a short indie game as Diablo IV had just released that Tuesday.
And also because SOMEONE bought it for me - the DELUXE edition, no less - despite the fact that I had only joked about friends getting it for me as an early birthday present. I wasn’t serious! And I didn’t expect it to be bought!
I am, after all, an independent young woman who could have afforded it if I had really wanted it (which, I mean, I was probably going to buy it on the day of its actual release).
So, I’m warning you! They-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named! You know who you are! You read this blog!
I AM WATCHING YOU!
Stop being nice to me! I don’t deserve it!
Okay, now that my rant is over, I have to say that the Bowral light show, while not as comprehensive as the one in Sydney still had its highlights. Beyond that, it was a good day out with family and friends in what would prove to be a hectic long weekend in June.

i started with my go-to simlicy save, so most of the residential lots and many of the community lots are by simlicy. i agonized over lot placement and number of each type of lot; i only ever play one family so it makes sense for me to have fewer residential lots and tons of community lots. i'm missing a lot of packs so this is pretty carefully curated to fit with what i do have (i'm used to replacing wallpaper and some furniture for most gallery builds but if it's missing much more than that I try a different lot). i love community lots that a) have things for sims to do and b) look pretty. all of these fit and i highly recommend every single one!!

Do you have any Rizzles fic recommendations?
Sure! I have a lot of fave stories; I like to read a lot of fic. I’m going to do five that were completed during the run of Rizzoli & Isles, and five that were finished/written after the show ended.
During the show’s run:
1. The Commitment - possibly my fave of all time. A fake dating story, of course. Delightfully angsty, brilliantly paced. Terse and so utterly complete.
2. The Beautiful Lie - another angsty, dirty one. I really love how this author can balance emotion and humor. Their dialogue is so real and engrossing.
3. Sugar and Spice - the French patisserie AU I never knew I needed. It’s just so sweet and soft and full of longing. I love it.
4. Island Fire - you know those books that are popular right now on BookTok and such for being 🌶️ spicy 🌶️? This is like that for rizzles. Big, excellent romance novel energy.
5. Crosswords and Coffee - my favorite Jane realizes fic. Soulful.
Post-show:
1. Warm Milk - holy cow is this good. Gut-wrenching and so, so well done. Sexy and adult.
2. To Charlotte with Love - this fic’s plot centers around a true crime podcast, and it reads like one. Fascinating! Great! And the love story is excellent, too.
3. Her Crumbling Preservation - (unfinished) Christ this is so raw and sexy. Also written by my best friend 🙄. It hurts so good, you know?
4. Growth Chart - probably my fave kid fic! And the rizzles romance makes me 🥹
5. When in Our Music - (unfinished) this tickles my lapsed-religious heart. The longing is out of this world. And god the prose is so good it makes me jealous. This art pushes me to be better, all the time!

Purr-suasion, by @empressofall
Based on a prompt submitted by @deinde-prandium: Adrinette P&P? Chloe as Emma? Go wild, as long as it’s an AU based on one of Jane Austen’s works.
AO3; Jane Austen AU, Background Feligami, Background DJWifi
Summary:
Marinette and Adrien reunite 10 years after Marinette suddenly broke off their secret engagement. At least, it had been sudden from Adrien’s point of view.
----
Their debt had been purchased and the sale to their new owners had been made. The Dupain-Cheng family still ran the patisserie on Rue Caulaincourt, but it no longer had their name above the door.
Those were just the first in a series of events that led Marinette to where she was standing now, across from him and him across from her.
In all honesty, it should have been obvious where this was heading. The purchase had been made years ago, but Gabriel Agreste, the old curmudgeon, had died and there had been no one to cause issues after that. The inheritance had fallen to some nephew in London and they had heard neither hide nor hair of him until a month ago. A month ago the letter had come with a last name that Marinette hadn’t thought to connect. They’d set up dinner, did their best to impress their employers, but the evening had turned sour as seating placements dictated that she was looking directly into the eyes of Adrien Agreste.
“We hadn’t even realized you left Paris.” Tom Dupain seemed a little sheepish in making that statement.
“I didn’t realize my father had bought your establishment.” The words seemed a little too biting, and he quickly added, “I’m happy that we are able to catch up after so many years.”
Adrien wasn’t a cruel person. Marinette knew him well enough to say that. Absence hadn’t made the heart grow fonder in this case, and the bitterness that drifted her way from his side was palpable.
Adrien’s cousin, Mr. Felix Graham de Vanilly, and his wife, Kagami, silently observed the mess that was unfolding and did nothing to help.
“You must tell us about your time at sea,” Sabine Cheng said. “The most famous Captain in the French navy. You must have some good stories.”
“Perhaps my cousin can share how he earned such a ridiculous nickname as the Dread Chat Noir,” Felix said with the barest hint of amusement.
Adrien didn’t look up from his plate. “Only that I bring bad luck to my enemies.”
Marinette didn’t know if she liked it better when he was ignoring her or when he wouldn’t look away.
“Why join the navy in the first place?” Sabine asked.
Adrien stopped completely. He set his utensils down and hastily picked up his napkin to cover a cough. His eyes looked up and over to her above the edge of the cloth with a question and Marinette gave no answer. She had never told her parents of the past. It wasn’t likely she would come out with the truth now.
No one argued when Adrien didn’t give an answer. He simply went back to eating.
Kagami gave an awkward smile as she looked around the table. “The salmon has such a lovely citrus flavor.”
.*.*.*.
Marinette was the one opening the bakery the next morning. She had started doing it a few days a week, giving her parents the opportunity to sleep in while she baked and served their first customers. In the time that she had grown older, so had they. Her father complained of his back aching more often and her mother had grown dark circles under her eyes.
Some might complain that Marinette was seven and twenty and unmarried, but she was doing a lot more good at home than she would in her own household.
Marinette was in the middle of putting fresh loaves of bread on the display when the door opened and the bell above it jingled. She looked up to see a familiar head of blonde hair. Adrien lingered in the doorway as though he were waiting for her permission to enter. She wanted to tell him that he was letting the cold in, but didn’t want him to take her words as hostile.
After a moment, he walked up to the counter and before he could even tell her what he wanted, Marinette was pulling the passion fruit macaron from the shelf and putting it in its only little bag. She grabbed a croissant from the display and added it to the order. Adrien seemed surprised when she presented them to him.
“You remember,” he said.
Marinette pretended she wasn’t thinking of every time she shared this breakfast with him. And every time she had thought about them sharing it in the last six years.
Adrien picked up the bags from where she had placed them. She held out her hand to him. “That’ll be a franc, please.”
He stared at her dumbfounded.
“Your cousin owns this establishment. Not you,” Marinette said. “I might be inclined to give him and his wife free products, but you’re still a paying customer.”
The fact was, Adrien had never had to pay before. He dug into his pockets even still and pulled out the money.
“You seem to be doing well for yourselves,” Adrien said, looking around the room. Gabriel Agreste had paid for renovations when he’d purchased their debt and their business. “And you seem well. As well.”
Was he angry? Is that why he was being so awkward?
Marinette was agonizing over what to say next. She wasn’t prepared for this conversation this early in the morning. Adrien had every right to be upset with her. His version of what happened was different than her own, some of the truth had been concealed, and it made Marinette the rightful object of his ire.
“Things have been…” Marinette paused to take a deep breath as she tried to think of what word to use, “fine.”
Adrien’s lips pulled into a tight line as he nodded.
Marinette tried to think of something else to say. “Do you…have your land legs back?”
Surprisingly, Adrien laughed at this.
“I’ve been back from sea for almost a month,” he said. “Sometimes I still feel the ground shifting beneath my feet.”
He started drumming his fingers on top of the counter.
“The— uh— The sailors under my command were the ones who started calling me Chat Noir.” Adrien had a soft smile on his face when he spoke.
“Because you bring bad luck on your enemies?”
“And myself.”
Marinette bit her lip. She was about to open her mouth. Maybe an apology would come out.
“I dropped a cannonball on my foot one time,” Adrien said.
It took Marinette a moment to realize that he was being serious and she burst out laughing. She was drawn back into her memories, how they used to try and make each other laugh every day. Picturing Adrien holding her in his arms as he cracked another ridiculous joke was an image still sharp enough in her mind to cut deep. His nose had brushed up against hers. Her eyelashes tickled his cheek.
“But I did face an enemy or two in battle,” Adrien continued. He shrugged. “Apparently, I did alright.”
Marinette sucked in a deep breath and asked the question she had been trying to hold back. “And how long are you staying?”
“I’m not sure yet.”
Nothing was sure. Not anymore.
Perhaps there had been a time when Marinette could ask him to promise to stay in Paris longer, or leave his post behind entirely. She had forfeited that right when she had gone back on her word. Adrien wasn’t the kind of person to do something like that, and he certainly wouldn’t tolerate that from anyone else. Not even her.
At one point in her life, Marinette had been so sure that she was going to keep her proimise to marry him. The day she had been called to his home by his father, that certainty crumbled.
Adrien sniffled and readjusted his grip on his bags of baked goods. “I will be here for a while. There’s some more people I want to see.”
More people. Could Marinette let herself believe that she was on his list?
“Perhaps I can see you again?” Marinette asked, the smallest bit of hope dripping into her voice.
Adrien smiled at her. “I’ll see you again, Miss Dupain-Cheng.”
Her heart sunk as he addressed her by her last name.
.*.*.*.
When Marinette did cross paths with Adrien again she hadn’t been expecting it. Someone— and she wouldn’t name names— had decided to bring him along on a trip to the botanical gardens.
Alya Cesaire had organized the outing. She had brought along Nino Lahiffe as well and Mr. Felix Graham de Vanilly and his wife Kagami tagged along as well. Nino and Alya walked arm in arm and Marinette xpected an announcement of their engagement any day now.
With the roster of the present company, Marinette had been left to walk in the back with Adrien. Couples weren’t always open with their single friends and Marinette often wondered if people got married just so they didn’t feel excluded. Fellow singles of the opposing sex had to keep distance from each other, which made commiserating difficult.
Not that she could have commiserated with Adrien. The fault behind why they walked with a few feet between them instead of arm in arm was her own.
Marinette tried to occupy herself by enjoying the flowers. They were in full bloom, the warm days of summer coming as a blessing after the cold of late spring. She took walks like this often and tried to use the time to find peace with herself. It was the first moment that Adrien was with her, not just in memory.
She’d thought of him often. Regret and hope had all mixed together in the same messed up bowl of feelings. With regret, she had listened to his father and “cut him loose.” With hope, she dreamed of him coming back to her.
Their encounters so far had been nothing like her fantasies and neither was this one.
Adrien remained silent. He was either listening to their friends' conversations or thinking about something. Either way, the look on his face was intense. It shifted, and he was nodding along to something with a small smile.
“Marinette, what do you think?”
She hadn’t been prepared for Alya’s question. “Hm?”
“What do you think?” Alya related. “About Adrien turning to a life of piracy.”
Adrien was looking at her as if he was actually curious to hear her answer.
“Would he make a good pirate?” she asked, quickly trying to avoid his eyes.
“Chat Noir is a better pirate name than a naval captain,” Nino said. He scoffed. “He could certainly use the money from stealing chests of gold.”
Alya’s brows furrowed. “What for? Don’t you have some large, grand inheritance from your father?”
“He did ,” Felix said, grumbling under his breath.
“What?” Alya and Marinette spoke almost simultaneously.
“Did?” Alya asked. “As in not anymore?”
They had all stopped walking, all eyes turned to Adrien. He turned sheepish under their gazes and his shoulders scrunched up to his ears. What was he trying to hide and why were Marinette and Alya the only ones who didn’t know? For what reason had Gabriel Agreste not left his son with something? Felix had been the one to inherit his business empire, but Adrien had nothing at all.
Anger bubbled up inside Marinette’s chest. Disinheritance had been what she had been trying to protect him from when she’d broken off their engagement. Gabriel had threatened to leave his only son with nothing if they had married and he had done it anyway.
Forget anger, Marinette felt overcome by panic. She tried to keep herself from hyperventilating. Her friends seemed to have noticed.
“Will you excuse me, please?” Marinette asked. By the end of her sentence, she was already walking away from them. She took herself off of the path and started trampling through the trees and over their roots.
Adrien was calling to her over the sound of leaves and branches snapping underneath her feet. Marinette didn’t want him following her. She tried to keep her pace fast enough that he couldn’t catch her but his long legs easily matched her strides.
He was able to maneuver around her with ease and stop her with his hands on her shoulders. The worry on his face was clear as day as he examined her and his grip was iron. She wouldn’t be able to go anywhere.
“What’s going on?” he asked. “What’s wrong?”
Marinette tried to keep her lip from trembling. She didn’t know what to say to him, how to let out the secret that no one else knew. Gabriel Agreste was dead. She had never told her parents and not even Alya.
“Did you—“ Marinette felt the words get stuck in her throat. She shut her eyes, cursing under her breath as she tried again. “Did your father really take away your inheritance?”
Adrien blinked slowly as he tried to process. “That’s what you’re—“ he stuttered. “No. No, I refused it.”
“What?” Marinette asked. Her feelings were running away from her. Tears streamed down her cheeks and she sniffled. “You did?”
Adrien hasilty used his hands to wipe away her tears. He was nervous to touch her. She could feel it.
“Marinette, I know,” Adrien said. “I found out that he told you to walk away.”
There was the slightest hint of anger in his green eyes, as if a distant memory were playing out behind them. Marinette could remember feeling the same way in the days after Gabriel Agreste had summoned her to his home. She had kicked herself for making her decision and then settled with it for a while, only to go back to beating herself up later.
“I was too late,” Adrien continued. “By then, I was in the middle of my commission. And when they gave me leave to see him before… I wanted nothing more than to come back and clear the air with you.”
“Clear the air…” Marinette repeated.
He still held her, so gently.
“I wish you had told me,” Adrien said. “I would have abandoned everything then and there if it meant I could keep all of you. More than just the memories.”
“I didn’t want to make you give up your family.”
“Damn that. You’re my family.” Adrien didn’t sound harsh at all. Marinette could only recognize the passion that she had loved with her whole being. “You, Marinette. You. You. I want you.”
He leaned in, as if to kiss her, and stopped short. There were still inches to close between them that seemed like miles.
Adrien pulled away, searching her face again. “I only– That is, I want to ask. If perhaps you still feel the same?”
Marinette wanted to scream that yes, of course. Of course, she still felt the same. How long had it been since her longing consumed her until it took over her life? Adrien had been in everything since he left, in every loaf of bread she baked, in the evening sky she looked up at on her roof. She saw him when she woke in the morning and when she went to bed at night.
How could her feelings have changed over these past years when he had been ingrained in her so deeply?
“If you no longer feel the same as you did, I swear to you, I will walk away without another word.”
Marinette grabbed his hand to hold him there. “Stay,” she said. “And tell me again.”
Adrien’s whole body flooded with relief. He relaxed, no longer carrying the tense posture of a shoulder. His head drifted down to rest on her shoulder, arms reaching around to pull her in tight. Marinette’s fingers threaded through his hair, keeping him as close to her as possible.
“I still love you,” Adrien mumbled.
“What was that?” Marinette asked.
Adiren looked up at her with a frown. “I–”
Marinette quickly pecked his lips. He silenced. She only let him sit in his shock for a second, and much sweeter and gentler, Marinette leaned in and kissed him again. It lasted longer, but she would need much more to make up for all the pain that still lingered in her heart.
Adrien was quick to caress her cheek, his other hand on the small of her back. When he finally pulled away, he looked as though he let go of anything but his happiness. “Say that I have you again.”
“I am yours.”
.*.*.*.
Marinette didn’t know if she liked the new sign hanging above the bakery. She had worked on it for hours, but wasn’t sure if it was perfect. Adrien told her a few times over that he loved the blue colors, reminding him of rolling waves on the seas.
The Agreste name had been taken down, and Dupain-Cheng put back up. Returning ownership of the shop to them had been an unexpected wedding present but a welcome one. Sabine and Tom started talking a few full days off with their daughter and son-in-law taking charge.
Marinette placed a hand on Adrien’s shoulder as she passed by him taking orders from customers. Today was a busy day, but it was hard to be stressed when she was spending it with him.
“You’ve got to take a break, my love,” Adrien told her after the customers were gone. “You’ve been on your feet all day.”
He wrapped his arms around her from behind, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.
“Perhaps we can afford to take an hour for lunch,” Marinette said. “If you insist.”
“I do. Put the sign on the door,” he said, turning her around to face him. “An hour to have you all to myself.”
Adrien, once again, drew her in for a kiss.

what is Ruby’s favorite scent? Does Jane have scratch and sniff stickers? Whose dog is this?
question time ; accepting
Ruby has a few favorite scents for different reasons. The smell of Jane's shampoo, floral perfumes, beeswax candles, and old books of course. She also has a soft spot for the smell of patisseries, fresh-baked desserts, and, in modern verses, she loves the smell of her own kitchen when it's being used, even if she's just making grilled cheese for Jane.
Jane has every type of sticker, of course, and that does include scratch and sniff, glow in the dark, puffy, google-eyed, holographic, vinyl, fuzzy, and more. She will offer you the one that smells like root beer.
This dog is named Einstein, and he is Ruby's service animal in applicable modern verses. He's an extremely fluffy sheep dog who's able to help with household tasks, as well as perform emotional support services when need be. When Jane's having a meltdown or panic attack, her instinct is to hide in a closet, and Einstein is able to get Jane to her bedroom when Ruby isn't able to.
He is also trained to get Ruby basic clothes, and pre-made (wrapped) breakfasts on days that Ruby can't get out of bed due to ptsd attacks of her own, as well as help Jane get ready for school and over to their neighbor's house to carpool with their kids. Usually, Einstein's job is to make sure toys are picked up, to help Ruby find the thing she's put down and needs to find again, and to be the damsel in distress that brave Sir Jane has to protect from the evil wizard Maman.

Recipe: Vegan lemon cheesecake (★★★★★)
Another day, another recipe. Welcome back to Sagal’s kitchen, where today I’ll be making a lemon cheesecake (dairy free of course). I’ve been looking forward to posting this recipe the most, as I have the biggest sweet tooth and love all things dessert!

1 cup coconut cream
A splash of almond milk
2 lemons, zested and juiced
 ½ cup of white sugar
Tumblr media
Via: taste and tell
How to make:
Place your graham crackers and coconut oil in a food processer and blend until almost smooth. It should feel like wet sand as opposed to a powder consistency. This will be your base.
Put your base in a cake tin lined with grease and baking paper.
For your topping, combine your corn starch, coconut cream, lemon, almond milk, and sugar in a saucepan on medium heat. Use a whisk in the beginning but continue with a wooden spoon and blend until completely smooth for five minutes.
The consistency should feel thick on your spoon. Using a hand mixer, combine your lemon mixture and cream cheese and blend slowly, until completely smooth. Ensure you don’t overmix it, as it won’t be able to set properly.
Place your lemon mixture in the cake tin on top of your crust. And smooth it out. Optionally, you can decorate with lemons on top.
Let it sit in the fridge for 3-5 hours.
Thoughts:
For me, this was a five star recipe. The zesty lemon flavour gives the food that perfect tang, making sure it’s not too sweet. It’s definitely a show stopper and I would recommend bringing this to your next get together (you’ll get lots of compliments). Although it is a longer process than preferable, it’s also a no bake cheesecake so that is definitely a plus.

Episode 2:
Departure Day minus 26 weeks
Tumblr media
This weeks theme: It’s only a cold.
Jane's week
Actually, when you have MS the words 'only a cold' are a massive understatement. That's because a common cold is caused by a virus.
According to google there are more than 200 different viruses that cause the common cold, Rhinovirus being the most common.
But because a cold is a virus, not only does is bring out the sneezes, it also increases the symptoms that are associated with my MS. Everyones experience and symptoms of MS are completely different. (You're going to hear me say that many times over the next few weeks - Sorry). So this time, for me, not only has it increased my tiredness and sent me to bed on Thursday it was accompanied by a sore throat on Friday morning.
Unfortunately, it has also brought out my tinnitus. This is something I live with and I am lucky that it does not stop me sleeping or concentrating. But this time, well, you know when you have a blasted bluebottle that keeps dive bombing you? You know it right? It is so annoying isn't it, drives you mad.
Tumblr media
Well that's what my tinnitus has been like this week. Every couple of minutes the volume of the constant buzzing in my ear, suddenly increases and sounds like I am being attacked by a blue bottle.
Another side-effect that become worse is my find motor skills. Having to change our Curry In A Hurry poster quickly, was definitely not done 'in a hurry'. The good news is that our curry slot has completely sold out, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the 7.30 pm and 8.30 pm slots will also sell out. Everyone is putting so much work into this.
Friday morning in particular did not go well for me. It started okay. I did my morning meditation, which is one of the pillars of the Overcoming MS program. Then Radio 2 played American Pie. I was word perfect. Pretty good I thought, considering that the last time I sung it was 11 years ago, along with my whole family during a holiday in France. I would just like to state at this point that we are not the Airey-Von-Trapp Family. In spite of the new sore throat, Friday was starting well I thought. Then I picked up an Earol spray and spayed it into my ear. As it gushed back out of my ear and down my neck, I realised that what I had actually sprayed right inside my ear was my Antiseptic Throat Spray.
Tumblr media
So last week I was panicking about the sheer volume of things to plan and organise before we leave. but this week, I have spent some time giving some thought to my energy levels. I have created what I think a typical day looks like for me when we do the Door To Door and I will try to emulate that as much as possible. I'm a bit of a geek so I'm also going to mark myself, firstly a mark out of ten based on how much of the activity I get some and then a second mark out of 10 rating my energy levels at the end of the day.

Ian's week
The Stable:
Bike No 1: 2023 Cannondale Carbon Synapse.
Bike No 2: 2012 Cannondale Carbon Synapse
Bike No 3 2009: Kinesis GF Racelight
I had the Kensis built to my own requirements, an aluminium frame kitted out with Shimano Ultegra gears & brakes. It was designed as a tourer and is still very comfortable to ride, its the one I used when I cycled the 168 miles from London to Holcombe Rogus in a day with Dan, Roddi and Nigel a few years ago. It is also the bike I will be doing most of my early training on.
More about Bike no 2 next week.
Tumblr media
This week I have been busy looking at my dietary requirements for the challenge and looking into where the best patisseries are for each day. You may or may not have noticed that wherever there is a cake shop there is usually a number of bikes parked out side!

Bright and sunny morning. Dressed in light cottons and beat up T-D auto on a comfy retro leather band I had spare. May go to the flea market with my cousin after lunch at the patisserie. We’ll do BookXcess and maybe Jane’s Cottage Soaps then I’m not sure what. My memory really is failing in middle age.
I may get a nicer velcro strap for my Aqualand if possible. No pressure, since I have actively stopped collecting watches.
Change of plan, my cousin is coming over to my place before lunch. Maybe we can do some songwriting, listen to Mozart, and discuss books and watches. Then we’ll send him all the way home to his condo with the dapao stuff from Chole.co.

Book Blurb: Murder is on the menu and Phaedra Brighton is called on to serve up justice in the latest Jane Austen Tea Society Mystery.
While Phaedra Brighton might not have a Mr. Darcy (yet), she's quite content with her loving family and loyal cat. Phaedra's sister Hannah is the Jane to her Elizabeth, and Phaedra is ecstatic that Hannah has decided to move home for her next adventure—opening a business.
All of Laurel Springs is out in full force to celebrate the grand unveiling of Hannah's new patisserie, Tout de Sweet, including local celebrity Rachel Brandon. Hannah is a master of her craft, with confections so divine, one bite will make you think you've died and gone to heaven.
Of course, you never want that to happen literally.
When one of Hannah's famous dark chocolate cupcakes sends Rachel's assistant to the hospital with poisoning, Hannah begs for Phaedra's help to save her reputation and budding business. But Phaedra has more questions than answers: Who was the cupcake actually meant for? And how far is the culprit willing to go to take their target off the menu—permanently?
Review:
When Professor Phaedra visits's her sister's new bakery she does not expect to be finding herself on a new case, one that has her sister as the main suspect of a poisoning! Phaedra Brighton is off to visit her sister Hannah's grand opening of her bakery. The grand opening would include local celebrity Rachel Brandon yet when one of Hannah's famous cupcakes sends Rachel's assistant to the hospital with poisoning, its up to Phaedra to help clear her sister's name and save her reputation before her budding business is ruined. Phaedra is on the case as well as dealing with her blooming relationship with fellow professor Mark. This was a cozy mystery with a touch of Jane Austen and a bit of modern day fun. This was an overall cute cozy mystery and you can read these as a standalone but they're more fun when you read it as a series. Overall, it was a pleasant time and a cute read.
*Thanks Netgalley and Berkley Publishing Group, Berkley for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*

Roman Holiday
July 28, 2023
“Rome. I will cherish my visit here in memory as long as I live.”
AUDREY HEPBURN - Princess Ann
Our plan on the first full day in Rome was to see as much of the city as possible. In order to achieve this goal and accommodate our various mobility differences and the soaring heat, we hired a private driver from Mary Roma. We had created a list of the top things that we wanted to see and sent it ahead to the company along with our start time and the driver was able to make am itinerary that made sense in the 6 hours we had scheduled.
Our driver, Fabrizio, picked us up promptly at 8:00 am and we started our tour at the Trevi Fountain. The fountain was being cleaned and the coins collected and so the fountain was not on. On the positive side of things, the crowd was not large at 8:00 am and so we were able to get up close and personal to the famous landmark to see the sculptures and take pictures. We stopped at a stand to buy a hat for Annie and a magnet for Julie and were lured into a patisserie for cornettos and maritozzo which Dad declared delicious. Julie opted for a plain cornetto and offered a bite to mom who grabbed a decidedly large percentage of the pastry and guzzled it down.
We loaded back into the van and enjoyed Fabrizio’s skill at manoeuvring through the narrow streets of the ancient city. We were often close enough to doors that we could have grabbed the door handle and the intricate dance between pedestrian, scooter and van was remarkable and horrifying all at once.
Next up, the Spanish Steps from the top. Beautiful! We saw the spot where Tom Cruise hopped in the yellow car and drove down the steps in the latest Mission impossible, Syl, Julie and Amelia walked down to the bottom of the steps and back up - finding out afterwards that our next stop was the bottom but making memories nonetheless. Poppa accepted a rose by a street peddler and had to be rescued by Jane and Fabrizio to get the man away from him. Julien was upset that I was not being nice and I was reprimanded soundly for my stern behaviour with the stranger.
The church was not open and so we were not able to visit.
Down the hill to the lower end of the Spanish Steps and Piazza di Spagna. It is a lovely vista and we were able to enjoy it in relative calm with no crowd in the morning. We took a stroll down Via Condotti - the “it” street for designer stores in Rome (think Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton). The stores did not open until 10:30 or so and so it was window shopping only for us!
We left there and headed to our next stop but we were hijacked by Mom and Julie who were sitting with Fabrizio in the front seat and who had spied a Pandora store. So inside we went for a little retail therapy that took a bit longer than allowed for our itinerary which meant that the Borghese Villa became the Borghese Gardens which became just a drive by and not a stop. On the upside, we got some wonderful souvenirs and Syl discovered a beautiful church, Chiesa di Gesù e Maria, just down Via del Corso.
The funeral of Andrea Purgatori (thanks Google!) in Piazza del Popolo was making some excitement with heavy police presence and television crews filming the ceremony. We drove by the beautiful Piazza several times but didn’t stop. Hoping we can get back there tomorrow before we leave.
Our next out-of-the-car stop was at Altar of the Fatherland which was my favourite stop for the sheer beauty that surrounded us. We had a snack here at a tiny takeaway sandwich shop - to die for!
We saw the Coliseum and stopped for approx 45 minutes here to gasp at its beauty. There were thousands of others also there which made it very hectic. Annie and Syl walked around the entire structure which is massive and imposing and an incredible architectural masterpiece. Julien and I stayed with Amma and Poppa at a terrific spot to people watch and enjoy the views. Annie said this was her favourite site of the day.
Next up was a stop at the Pantheon and finally Piazza Navona where Fabrizio left us and where we found a great restaurant for a light lunch. This was on Mom’s bucket list - lunch in the Piazza and so we made it happen.
After lunch, Mom, Dad and Julien caught a taxi back to our vacation house and the rest of us meandered around Piazza Navona and then headed back on foot. The distance was set to be 3 km but a slight detour at Castel St. Angelo added another km or so as did Syl’s initial navigating where he only semi-partnered with Google maps. Along the way we walked around Castel St Angelo, saw the Canadian Embassy, crossed the Tiber River and viewed some beautiful streets and buildings. It was a long and hot walk and we were glad to get home for a siesta before dinner.
We decided that steak was our wish for dinner, and a quick search on Trip Advisor led us to Il Belli al Trionfale a short two blocks from our apartment. DELICIOUS! We feasted on deep fried meatballs and smoked carpaccio for appetizers and strip loins served with three salts and some with truffle fondue. They were served on a hot stone which allowed us to cook them to perfection.
Over dinner we discussed our thoughts of the day and determined that Rome has a ratio of Church to Gelatto Store to Piazza to Stolen Obelisk of 10:10:3:1.
A quick walk back and some time on the roof-top terrasse before bed.
