A Big Apple Feathursday
These collagraph prints by American artist, educator, and printer John Ross (1921-1917), made for the 1998 Birds of Manhattan, depict a few of the more common birds of that island against various architectural features of the city. It's sometimes easy to forget how biodiverse Manhattan is, particularly in bird life. Manhattan lies on the eastern route of the Atlantic flyway, so it receives many visitors as well as serving as a year-round residence for many species of birds.
The book, another donation form the estate of our late friend Dennis Bayuzick, was conceived, designed, illustrated and printed in an edition of 40 copies by John Ross at his East Hampton, New York High Tide Press in collaboration with relief aid officer and Greek and Latin scholar Lloyd Jonnes, who wrote the text. The binding, with its inset painted relief of a Cardinal, is by James D. Marcantonio at his Hope Bindery in Providence, R.I. This book was selected for the 1998 “50 Books / 50 Covers” by the American Institute for Graphic Arts in New York.

In honour of #BlackHistoryMonth, we wanted to share the story of John Ware, one of many Black individuals who have helped shape Alberta and Canada’s heritage and identity.
Born into slavery on a South Carolina plantation around 1845, he rose to fame on the prairies because of his exceptional horsemanship skills. Ware purchased a ranch near Millarville in 1891 and the next year he married Mildred Lewis. The couple had six children.
As more people moved into the Millarville area, the family relocated along the Red Deer River, north of Brooks Alberta, near what is now Dinosaur Provincial Park.
Read more on his legend and how to visit his cabin this summer: https://bit.ly/42kVCAw

Israels actions against Palestine make me sick to my stomach. Every time I look at the news I see some new horror they are committing, and see how they are justifying the inexcusable, I feel sick to my stomach with rage. But now, in the heart of Ramadan, the word angry feels too small for the fire I feel in my chest.
Palestine will not be able to properly celebrate Ramadan this year. Trying to explain the situation to people who have never interacted with the community is difficult. Even when thinking to myself, I have the urge to compare it to what I know. "Imagine if there was no Christmas." "Imagine if someone took away Easter." "Imagine there was no food on Thanksgiving."
But Ramadan is not any of those things. The fact that there is no Ramadan in Palestine should be enough to make you angry.
I've been living in a muslim country for six months now. Ramadan is not nearly as festive as Eid was, but its presence is unmistakable. You can taste the joy in the air. Children here get out of school early this month. There is a school across from my home; I hear their laughter every day. String lights hang from the balconies of my neighbors, wrap around palm trees, dangle from streetlights. In the news I read that the Sheik has pardoned hundreds of prisoners, paying off their fines himself in the spirit of charity. Shops here are decorated to match, with cut out stars and crescent moons and streamers. Many shops offer discounts. "70% off home delivery."
There are festivals in the streets and lectures in the colleges.
It is wonderful. And the people of Palestine do not have this. Their fasting is forced, their children out of school by force, their houses lit by firebombs and not crescent moon LEDs, homes that smell of gunsmoke instead of oud.
I hate Israel. It feels childish to admit this. It feels like a shortcoming; hate is what causes this crisis, I should be able to focus on loving Palestine instead of adding more hate to the world. But it is a word I can't help but feel when I think about what Isreal has done, is doing, will do to the people of Palestine. What injustices they will force upon them next. Hate. It's not something I say lightly, but it is something I feel I must say.
I am not disappointed in Israel. I am not sympathetic to their 'cause.' I will not censor myself to sound more moderate, to convince the undecided. I hate Israel. I hate Israel. I hate Israel.

Hundreds of people marched along Water Street in downtown St. John's on Sunday afternoon to show support for Palestinians in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. It's the third straight Sunday that people in the city have rallied in support of Palestinians. This time, more than 300 people gathered in Harbourside Park and marched to the steps of the St. John's courthouse. Since the Oct. 7th Hamas attack and the subsequent Israeli military response, thousands have been killed on both sides of the conflict. Israel says the initial Hamas attack killed 1,400 people, while Gaza's Health Ministry said the death toll among Palestinians has now passed 8,000. In St. John's, Salma Awad spoke to the assembled crowd between loud chants and cheers. "I'm disappointed to be back again, but I do still pray this is my last time but we have to raise our voices, we have to keep showing up, we have to keep our solidarity with the Palestinian people," she said.
