A Review of Simply Plural (By Bennett Levine, M&M)
Hi guys, Ben here, and here is my review of the app ‘Simply Plural’! We’ve seen this app floating around in a lot of plural communities and figured that we’d give it a try after seeing some screenshots of it from others online. This review will be as complex as I can make it, brushing up on all the topics I wish to bring up, so if you’d like to jump to specific parts of this review, page headers will be used for easier access.
Disclaimer: This is just my system and I’s opinion; Just because we see the app a certain way doesn’t mean we expect everyone to. Every plural has a different experience, and the purpose of this review is to help highlight the features of the app as well as to provide commentary on it. This is also in no way meant to criticize the developer of the app, Amaryllis, and is entirely lighthearted. This review was not sponsored in any way. This review is our honest opinion on the app and all links have been added by us for ease-of-access.
(Edit one: edited a part of the post, as I had managed to troubleshoot an issue that I had with the app.)
Features And Functionality:
The primary reason my system was initially drawn to Simply Plural was its ability to log and help track switches! From the colorful icons to the slick, minimalist design, we were hooked from the get-go:
Tumblr media
(Here’s an example from one of our first days using this feature. As you can see, it was also a day full of rapid switching!)
Another core feature of Simply Plural is its ability to log members and member information, as well as being able to assign members to groups. This is similar to the Discord bot, Pluralkit, but features a little extra spice in my opinion. Members and groups can also be made private, and if I understand correctly, be unviewable to any friended accounts using the app. You can also change privacy settings to be different for specific friends:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The complexity of individual member profiles is something that we really appreciate, as a system who enjoys meticulously logging each and every detail we can get our hands on. Descriptions for each of the circled tabs are below:
Fields: These are pre-set (or custom-added) sections for members to log their likes, dislikes, roles, birthday, and more! The sky’s the limit with these bad boys.
Member-specific fronting log: This is really self-explanatory, in my opinion; it’s just a lot of every time a specific alter has been logged as fronting on the app.
Notepad: This functions as a space for writing miscellaneous notes. Again, this is mostly self-explanatory.
Options: Privacy settings, member ID’s, and the option to delete the member will be here.
Polls are also a great feature of this application, and allow for a whole system to weigh in with their opinions on topics of interest:
Tumblr media
Other notable features include the ability to add friends (both system and singlet) for the purpose of viewing who is fronting at any given time, the ability to generate tokens for use on third-party sites, and reminders and alarms with a number of different settings.
There is also a page within the app for plural resources, including help for new alters, and the famous MoreThanOne website. We haven’t had the need to use these, and so I am not fully sure how helpful these would be, but at the very least they are a pleasant touch.
Lastly, systems may be imported from Pluralkit, which is a plus if you are already a frequent user of this handy Discord bot. Formatting may look a bit weird for member descriptions if you’ve used bold, italic, strikethrough, etc. on Discord, but this is a minor setback in my eyes. You will need a token from Pluralkit in order to import your system to Simply Plural.
What I Liked...And What I Didn’t Like:
After using this app for a little over a month, here are the things I liked, along with the things I didn’t like all that much.
What I (Really) Like:
To start things off on a more positive note, here are some things that I had a particularly positive experience with and/or helped me to better use the app:
Detailed member logging: This is something I’ve already mentioned above, but I cannot stress this enough! If your system is like mine and enjoys logging headmate information, then you’re most likely going to love this just as much as I do. There is a lot of customization you can do with this feature, which allows member logs to be as complex or as simplistic as you like.
Streamlined design: I love the way this app looks. Point-blank, period. It’s modern, it’s minimalist, and it’s easy to navigate. Accent colors can also be customized, which adds a personalized touch to the application’s appearance.
Accessibility Settings: Simply Plural includes basic accessibility settings that may make the user experience easier for some individuals.
Ability to import Pluralkit systems: While my system does not utilize this feature, we still understand that it can be beneficial for systems who already use Pluralkit.
All-Inclusive developer: Amaryllis - creator of Simply Plural - appears to support all systems regardless of origin; the rules of the official SP Discord server states the following:
This server supports all origins, and we don't tolerate any discrimination regarding systems and their origins. Don't discuss origins or comment about systems and their origins.
This makes it a lot easier for me to support this app, as well as facilitating an app that may be used by all systems regardless of their origins.
What I Didn’t Really Like:
Now onto my more negative criticisms of the app: things that made my experience worse, or that I would like to see changed:
Constant updates:  The app is updated constantly, which is both good and a bit bothersome: on one hand, it shows that the developer(s) of the app are active and care a lot about their userbase, but on the other hand it can be cumbersome to update the app once a week. (Most of the updates have been extremely quick to install, however.)
Cannot re-arrange alters on the member list: This may be nitpicky, but I think it would be a helpful feature to allow you to re-arrange the order of members on the member list. Currently, I have not found a way to do this, and it appears that alters are sorted based on alphabetical order. Changing an alter’s name to have A or Z at the start of their name would place them at the top and the bottom of the list respectively, however this looks unattractive to me. Allowing alters to be moved manually to any place in the list regardless of alphabetical order would likely be a good new addition.
Personal Experiences With The App:
Like I’ve mentioned previously, my system downloaded Simply Plural out of curiosity, as well as the desire to track our alter’s fronting times. Learning to use the app took a bit of work, and is something we still often slip up on. It took some fiddling with the privacy settings in order to get things worked out with our singlet friend, who had downloaded the app to see which one of us was fronting during our classes, but we eventually got it worked out after some fiddling with the permissions on both his phone and ours. I also frequently find us forgetting to log switches on the app, or being too lazy to do so. This is a personal issue we have, but if you have low energy, or struggle to remember to do things like this, then it may be harder to benefit from this side of the app. Like mentioned above, the app does have an alarm feature to remind you to log switches, but I tend to keep my phone on Do Not Disturb mode, rendering the alarms unable to go off properly.
All-in-all, we will likely keep using Simply Plural for the foreseeable future, so that we can have a space to privately store member information in detail in an easier-to-access format than Pluralkit. Logging members’ switches and fronts may be iffy from time to time, but we still will when we have the desire/energy/time to. The app may be helpful to some plurals, especially those who are in need of a private space to log information about their headmates or log switches due to amnesia issues, at the request of a mental health professional, or for any other reason. (Information about switches can be exported to a web-format if needed.) The app may also be beneficial for systems who want to show their active fronters to their friends and family.

Negative and positive in Game playing
Video games is one of the major hobbies and in many cases careers on the globe. People play childish games for fun as well as learning whilst others record clips about the online games. In this article, Allow me to focus more on video games itself but not so much the side of how to generate gaming videos. Gamers come in all different years, genders, religions, locations and shapes. The backgrounds of folks that are gamers make games that much more entertaining. Backgrounds of gamers can easily play a part inside the type of online games that people enjoy. There are a myriad of combinations several categories in relation to the type of activities and kind of gamers. You really need to look at the game's website to get many of the pertinent facts prior to choosing. There are many online platforms for you to buy online games from that include Steam as well as Humble Pack. Those sites will give you the description, movies by the provider, pictures, individual and nonuser tags, critiques, website, enterprise and their public account(s). Take note the game's website may not show you programs to know. At least, a gambling company will show a short sales page description, small amount of pictures (5 at best), one or two videos by them all and their sociable accounts. Some of the most they will furnish is an helpful description, the social documents, user reviews and videos by means of them. Discussing dive straight into what is regarded as negative about gaming. The majority of the negative reasons for games come from the real-life persons on the games, the kind of games as well as the types of activities for an unacceptable person. A can be inadequately made nonetheless it's not generally the case where game itself is poor. It could be where by it was unwanted type of match for an unacceptable person. This is when the different types come in. Perhaps a game possesses a bit of assault. That doesn't make it bad; it merely requires makes it an incorrect type of video game for a several year old. Or simply you bought a puzzle video game for a individual that loves action type video games. So the actions loving person won't appreciate it, but it doesn't make the bigger picture game awful! The types of activities are endless from nudity, drugs and alcohol, apprehension, gambling with money and more. These many types are wrong for youth gamers along with wrong for those who don't like discovering such things. Game playing has bad and good sides similar to everything else. The key is how good and bad will be those factors. For example , several games enjoy a bad side with players the fact that like to fight a lot. This is certainly common for games. Appreciate for a lot of avid gamers this is not a problem; however , meant for youth exactly who are fresh to the game or maybe gaming in general this can be annoying. There are times when you would like to avoid the negative sides as a whole. There are times when the best outweighs the bad. If this happens and there are no problems with the game on its own; then the negative side is just that particular little take a flight in your room or space which is no big deal. Extreme caution: If the terrible outweighs the good, I would strongly recommend avoiding that game. Another aspect that individuals will nag a game designer or founder about is usually representation. Must i say, an absence of representation which is not limited to race, body type and message in the game. If you are in a position to customize your character, afterward of course you may not have a problem with portrayal. There is a problem in some activities where that they don't symbolize strong and smart females, minority females and males, big, small , and tall, and short females and males. Notice can certainly make money didn't put "males" following female pertaining to strong? That is because adult men in video games are ALWAYS displayed as good and intelligent. In video games that indicate a guy strong and smart, quality guy mostly be white, high, thin, superstar looking and then polish. You will almost never see him be a minority, short, puffy, not ripped, nerdy looking, while yet being strong and sensible. You see this kind of even SIGNIFICANTLY LESS for females. Several females through games can also be white, large, thin and strong whilst showing skin area like virtually no tomorrow. You simply see ALL THESE females in MMORPG games (Massively Multi-player online Part Playing Game) though. RPG games are meant for fantasy worlds where you mainly fight most people and enemies. Of course the females' numbers will be solid but they will not likely look solid. In most online games, when they put a character for you to play that they always include a white man first, a white woman, then a black color male, and next a black color female. They don't possibly really increase people who are compact of events or between. When it comes to the black characters they simply add a person shade from "black" as well as "African American" and not every black someone on earth is always that shade. In games, most of the characters are always thin and tall. You really check out characters that will be short and thin, high and puffy, short and chubby, etc . There are a lot of individuals that aren't slim and whom aren't large. Then finally, there is the brain message which goes with the gender, race, and body type. What am i saying by the intellectual message? A bit of games send out an roundabout message with that character staying strong and smart or maybe something else. While for other games it's rather a mental subject matter either purposely or not really. For example , hanging around you perform and you view a minority female who is short, chubby, nerdy looking and her features are to be your goof ball, naive, and dumb. It could actually send a mental note to you that people that seem like her are just like her. They're not wise, they not necessarily thin, and therefore are not extra tall. They did poorly in school, and so forth etc . Therefore you start wondering those things determined by not only witnessing this in that game again and again, but when it happens in other activities too. the callisto protocol is non-e of these everything is true. Certainly, some people aren't thin, high, and maybe certainly not that excellent; but not Everybody is like this! You choose to do have short chubby hispanics who happen to be smart as all secure out! You may have all kinds of mixtures of people who HAPPEN TO BE smart! Of course , all these reasons for having gender, race, body type, and messages aren't just on gaming; they're in videos, TV shows, advertising, etc . Can be interesting is that some of the creators who make the games, videos, TV shows, advertising, etc ., are minorities themselves and they make up the population with the earth. (Search "world people by race 2016" and click the 1st three backlinks if you don't imagine me. ) Quick please note: I WAS NOT BASHING ANYONE! For sure, I was yelling that. This section of the article is hinting what I understand, read, notice and knowledge in game playing. If you don't imagine me go look at current day's TV shows, videos, ads, and games. A show to look at for great representation is Milo Murphy's Law. Two games to observe as a referrals for good manifestation are OverWatch and Atlas Reactor. At this moment in these areas it has gotten better designed for representation specifically gender, race and just at this point starting figure (specifically from this order). A bit of games sometimes add software and pets as enjoyable characters to stop having problems with representation. This removes the condition of end users wanting a personality to represent all their actual or preferred gender, race, or perhaps body type because now there is actually a character a good number of users may agree on. In fact, you can't please everyone. Fine, now that I just ranted and also the bad goods out of the way; a few get into the best parts of video gaming! You have game enthusiasts as young as 3 years old and as good old as 90+! No matter your age, race, sexuality, religion, way of life, or location gaming can be good for anyone. Gaming are not able to only be fun, but beneficial and educational. A bonus with video games is it can certainly help youth have more confidence per and be considerably more social. If perhaps they execute an online multiplayer game and talk to several other players worldwide, this can help after that get used to actually talking to other people besides family and they will gain self esteem in what they're saying. They can go from an introvert to a community fanatic! It can happen easily or slowly. Even if it's not a game but a place for gamers, artists, fashion designers, car enthusiast, etc . to speak; it will continue to help them be a little more social. Bear in mind though, inputting to an individual and then words chatting to someone happen to be two different experiences. Young ones can be very community when inputting but incredibly shy in the event that voice talking. This is how When i is. In advance of I was afraid when conversing with people I didn't comprehend whether it was online or maybe offline, at this time I've are more comfortable with that because I know how to handle personally and have confidence in average joe. But when considering voice communicating online, I will be the calm person in the chat. Detrimental right! You could even happily forget about I was in a call in hand! Before when people in the bank says "Hi" When i wouldn't state anything, i actually react and express "Hi. How are you? " There after I no longer really expect to talk with all of them so We will be quiet yet again lol. Find what I mean? Immediately after socializing, normally, over time you get better at this and become fewer nervous plus more confident on yourself. One other benefit with gaming can be team operate. Sometimes for games a possibility to win or accomplish a goal should be to work with more than one players. In most games, avid gamers are allowed a task may be accomplished with only one person, but it may very well be harder should you not have more players than your self. Other times selected tasks can't be accomplished with one player and will need two or more. Fees you make friends with your contacts or relatives to finish the goal. Furthermore you can make a group with people you didn't understand. This is where it may get tough. If it's a casino game where you can develop a group which invite just, you'd only invite your friends or family. You can plan with them, you'd be much more comfortable talking with them, and you'll all agree with work together. Whether it's a game high is no ensemble system you could still handle others, aka free intended for fall, and you can talk with them all there may perhaps still be an objective that can just be completed with multiple players. Is it necessary to play with different players you have never spoke to just before if your relatives and buddies can't join you and you want to complete the following goal? This isn't a bad issue though! That's where you not only become more public but you learn how to work with additional players you have never met before. If you happen to always play with your family and friends you both already know the right way to work together, how other thinks, etc . When it's someone you've never met it can be a little challenging. Me and my brother was raised doing every thing together not having really having any contacts, maybe fellow workers and contacts but not genuinely friends. Hence we were very used to knowing what the different wanted or perhaps how they gamed etc . But when we actually got two friends, it had been very difficult to agree on several things. So if you execute and use other people right now it will be easier afterwards. Me and my brother currently have improved each of our skills to do business with others. A further benefit can be patience which usually ties in with team building and socializing. In the end, in order to get better at a thing you not only have to keep carrying it out but you have to have patience while doing it. There are a number times in games where you have got to to wait. Just like reading is due to everything, you want patience for everything. For games an individual always has to wait to get something. You must have patience for locating something, a little something to finish cooking, something to finish dying, friends and family to come back via going afk (Away Via Keyboard), the next wave of monsters to come, the next stage to open up, etc . and so forth I had to acquire patience in the event that writing this content! So video games can help you convey more patience for gaming and everyday life. An additional benefit is usually hand and eye coordination. When you're gaming you have to pay attention to what's happening on your display screen while also pressing the controller or keyboard control key to do more and more on your display screen. If you want to relocate your persona in that video game, you have to work with your keyboard and computer mouse button or a controlled while nonetheless looking at your screen. It's like understanding how to type. Most of the time you're supposed to learn how to type words and sentences while exploring at your display screen without taking a look at your keyboard. This same thing applies to game playing. You have to be in a position to press the needed keys in order to execute that element you're aiming to do while exploring at your display. After all, if you're pressing your keys although not looking at the screen, how is your day going to find out if you're performing it right? At this time, this one can be described as benefit and educational benefit - memory. Game titles can help your own memory. How? Let me tell you. Consider what I explained above about typing. Those who can examine their screens and type without taking a look at their computer keyboard have a little something called "muscle memory". Every time they want to make some letter display on screen these just have to press that crucial and they do not have to look at the key pad because they have press that key frequently they themselves and their muscle mass remember exactly where that certain key is. You have lean muscle memory witout a doubt. Don't consider me? Take a look at your keyboard right now. The thing is where every one of the letters, numbers, and emblems are suitable? The correspondence are not through alphabetical purchase. So while you tried to type your name or something over a digital key pad where the correspondence were majuscule; Did you take you longer as opposed to usually to type the fact that word and was that weird and confusing? It absolutely was. I've performed it. You recognize why? Should you type or text to someone you know the expression you want to get appear on display and you remember where the important factors are. You may can't let them know in order if perhaps someone asked you when they asked you to type a word you'd be able to type it when you know the place that the keys happen to be. For me I am aware how to cause certain text when I am just typing but on the other hand not ways to spell it verbally. The reason is , I'm experiencing the word staying spelled looking at me. Theoretically when we type to each other we are going to spelling away words after which reading these folks in our mind. However when you speak out loud you don't start to see the words you just hear these individuals. Sure, as you read text on screen you hear them all in your mind, also right not even you hear all these words I will be typing, nevertheless, you don't verbally hear all of them and if you're seeing every single letter comprise that concept. When an individual spells a problem you right away notice this because it's not always spelled suitable and you read it. Every time someone echoes something you don't read any kind of letters, you simply hear the saying. So video games can help you increase muscle recollection and head memory. If you possibly could store goods in match you have to keep in mind where you use it, or if you require a menu to make a little something you might keep in mind the menu, or maybe you remember a detail regarding something important, or maybe you remember the way in which through a web or the manner home. A few games are even built simply to help improve your memory and also the only approach to keep growing is thinking about how certain facts. My mom may type with no looking at its keyboard counterpart but battles with aiming to walk in games. So now let's get into the educational benefits. An individual educational gain is mathematics. Now, the game doesn't have to have a goal to train you math in order for it for getting math. The purpose of going to school is to get an education! Not socialize, but the truth is still might make friends. So this applies to most games. This online game doesn't also have to have a aim of L but it might include J. Its goal might be A but it might still have M. In some games you can build houses and use formulas to make products. How big are you interested in your how you can be? 30 blocks X 10 blocks X 62 blocks? Would you understand what I just talked about? Let me say it differently. 30 hindrances on the A axis (left and upon the ground), 10 prevents on the Con axis (up and down on the ground), and 60 blocks for the Z axis (up and down from the air). This is the way you'd create a house, working with math, in a game called Minecraft. With such coordinates it indicates your house will be a rectangle having a very tall in height roof. Let's use Minecraft again due to this next example. If you want to create 4 swords for example , so what do you need? You would like wood and iron. Simply how much wood? Simply how much iron? Most of us start with the handle. You need two twigs to make the cope with for one sword. One hardwood log might be turned into some wooden cedar planks, take two and you can in that case make some wooden stays. You want to generate 4 blade handles. Now how many wooden logs do you require? One. Pertaining to the sword itself it requires two items of iron. You want to make four swords, so, just how much flat iron do you need? 8. See? According to what you're making and just how many of that thing the recipe can call for loads of resources or perhaps a few. One more educational profit is condition. There are lots of games with puzzles or none but it could include find solutions to problems. A good video game for example is definitely Scribblenauts Unlimited. In this match you go to produce different places solving individual's problems to generate them happy which gives you an item to cure another person. In order to solve their problems, you have to usage adjectives and nouns to eliminate the problem by itself or produce something to fix the problem. Want to know the best part is you may solve the fact that problem many different ways with zero way may be the wrong way. Some video games even change based on the options and we contact these "paths". Some walkways can change, stick to the same route, or end. So you will need to solve each individual problem the correct way otherwise you may choose the incorrect path or a path the fact that ends. One other educational help is reaction timing. On hand want to die in a certain game your a reaction to something could possibly be the deciding truth of your survival or serious. The more you test your effect timing the faster you and quickly you'll be able to respond to things promptly. This can arrive from games with combat like MMORPGs, photographers, and PvP (Player Sixth v Player). You decide to do a lot of these items in game titles without even discovering it! In case you play that game you just have to do A, G, M, and S for you to do whatever it will be you're planning to do, , and without knowing in the fundamental those skills are officially called B, H, In, and Capital t and utilised in 3, 6, and on the lookout for. See? Which means you just have to get accustomed to applying the skills from the real world. A handful of games happen to be better surely ages as well as interests. A lot of games aim at little kids, some are meant for teen and young adults, and others are for all adults. Then there is games just for people keen on robots, cars and trucks, fashion, princesses, ice skating, and so forth So the activities could have most of the same benefits, but the benefits may very well be better for many people when compared to others. A handful of games are utilized in schools or college, as tests for programs and even to instruct certain topics. I recently got a game that may teach me personally how to browse and write down thier Japanese personas while surviving in a game environment. Some people exactly who don't speak English now know it plenty of to talk to Everyday terms speakers through playing as well as watching game titles in British! If you find a person who knows how to speak out, read, or perhaps write a small Japanese; question them if they have watched Anime. Most English language speakers find out some Japanese people because they will play or maybe watch Cartoons things. And so when you see the youth or perhaps grandparents participating in some game titles, don't think they have bad. It may be helping the memory, problem solver skills, math skills, or they may be learning another terminology or learning more with regards to a topic. As you read, there are bad and good sides to gaming. I might suggest you just have fun and be harmless while game playing. There are plenty of game titles out there for every type of man and more video games are still returning. Games can assist you improve and teach you knowledge you not simply use in game, but you use in school because the real world. Online games can help you receive sharp and stay razor-sharp. Have fun video gaming and y'all stay safe!

Note
We’re all pretty aware that the tumblr otherkin community is at a huge decline; I was wondering if you have any theories as to why that is?
American Protestantism, the decline of queer oppression in North America and the AIDS crisis, helicopter parenting, web 3.0, morality politics, and  Tumblr’s porn ban; roughly in that order and rolled up into one bombshell that was a few years in the coming but nobody really saw it and understood it until it was far too late.
That was a mouthful and probably only made sense if you follow current cyberpolitical theory. For some of you reading this, as with every other hot take I have this has a chance of being passed around, that alone is enough. But for others who had no idea what I just said and need the ELI5 version, let me explain that. Buckle up, this’ll be a long one, and will go into fandom history a bit as well because it is actually relevant.
As we know, tumblr is a very American-centric platform. Twitter is also this way, but less so, but tumblr has it bad. Now, I’m ‘lucky’ in the fact that I’m Canadian and a twenty minute drive from the American border, so that puts me in the ‘privileged’ majority. (I say privileged because I’m not really sure what else to call it. Most of the information going around about politics either directly affects me or indirectly affects me approximately one or two links of contact away. Someone who’s only influenced by American politics because it makes their sister’s online friends sad is not going to be privileged in that way.)
This means that American politics and their social climate overwhelmingly affects tumblr’s social climate. This also bleeds through into other fandom spaces, on twitter, instagram, and Pixiv to name a few places; but here’s where I spend the majority of my time so here’s what I’ve witnessed.
America’s main religion, as far as I understand (from the raised agnostic and currently neopagan view I have), is some weirdass capitalistic-Protestantism that is so many miles from what the actual Bible says that if I were a betting man and knew more about cults than I did, I’d say it’s some weird fucking cult and never set foot in the country again for any reason that isn’t gaming free shipping through a PO box. If you have no idea what I just said but are at least vaguely familiar with Christianity, this graphic explains it pretty well. So we can see there’s some glaring issues with that ideal.
The decline of queer oppression and the rise of queer rights in North America, which is to tenderly include my own country but we all know when people say ‘in NA’ they mean ‘America, and Canada where it applies because the right-wing Republicans are really good in the propaganda department to convince everyone that Mexico is a drug-lords-and-anarchy wasteland to the point where even I don’t actually know what’s down there other than bad drivers and heat’; means two things. One, it’s a good thing by a long shot and do not mistake this as me thinking queer oppression being lessened is a bad thing. But two, it means that thanks to the AIDS crisis, queer folks lost a lot of first-person sources as history.
The queer elders in NA who survived are typically either a) bitter anarchists who are often POC, probably still dirt poor and do recreational drugs or b) university-tenured TERFs (trans exclusionary radical feminists). Category A are the people who Republicans have deemed worthless in every way, because racism, queerphobia, ableism, and all the other ways to be wrong and different and Evil that they can’t handle, because Jeezus would never want them to actually learn to love someone who wasn’t just like them, and they don’t have the compassion to do better. Category B are the people who want to be different in just a teensie little bit, typically with TERFs they want to be lesbians, but they don’t want to challenge the status quo. They’re fine with the way things work, they just want to be on top oppressing others over ripping the whole damn thing down and building a more forgiving system.
Now, due to all those ‘isms and the cheerfully malicious aid of the Republicans, pun not intended but drives home the cruelty of it all, we also see the rise of helicopter parenting. The invention of the internet did not really help this. Basically what you’ve got is a whole bunch of parents who saw the civil rights movement, just got access to the internet and things going viral, know the world is changing, and like all parents, they’re scared for their children. Now instead of parents knowing one or two people in their classes who just went missing one day and everyone assumed they ran away, they hear about eight homicides in the city of kids going to parks at night and dying. The Satanic Panic was another event around this time that contributed to that, but I’ll let you research that one.
This means that all of these parents, instead of doing what their parents typically did and let their kids wander off for the day so long as they’re back by sundown, they can’t let their children out of their sight. There might be a freak accident where their child is decapitated on the playground swing! Their baby might get murdered by an evil Satanist walking home from school! Their dearest darling might go online and tell their address to someone who’s got a 100% chance of being a pedophile who will show up and kidnap them in the night!
…You get the idea.
Combine those three things I just established, what we’ve got is a lot of queer kids who have a lot of internalized shame for being different and wrong, because they’re queer, and they can’t find spaces offline to be themselves, because all of the elders who would do that are dead and/or inaccessible and their parents won’t let them go to any clubs that aren’t school-related, which they’ll never find a GSA or queer club because Republicans, ‘isms, propaganda, and the war on Category A queer adults have all done their best to ensure that those spaces don’t exist.
So you have a generation of kids who I am the youngest of. The first generation on the internet. The late Web 1.0 (usenets and Geocities) and early Web 2.0 (livejournal was the big one, ff.net too, also 4chan but fuck those guys) generation. What we were taught was: trust nobody on the internet with your real info no matter how much you like them, this is a wilderness and any crimes that happen won’t be punished or seen so don’t put yourself in a position where you’re going to be the victim of one, and everything you put online is never getting taken down so don’t put anything up that you’re not willing to have on the front page of your local newspaper.
This worked out pretty well, actually! You had kids who knew that if they got in trouble, there was no backup coming to save them. Because the form that backup might take - parents and police - wasn’t going to help. Best case, they’d be banned from their friends and online support groups for being queer. Worst case, they’d be jailed and put in juvie and conversion therapy and turn to drugs and become evil Satanists just like everyone says they secretly are already. So they learned very quickly to take care of themselves. Nobody was going to save them, so they learned to not need saving.
And then, well, Web 2.0 shifted to Web 3.0. Livejournal died because parents - the Warriors for Innocence was the big name - went “gasp how horrible my children are being exposed to the evil pedos and homosexuals they’re going to do drugs and die of AIDS!”. Which is uh. It’s filled with a lot of bigotry, and I’m not excusing them - absolutely I am not - but you can kind of see where they’re coming from, if you tilt your head and squint.
Either way, LJ died, tumblr took its place, Facebook was fast taking off, and the fandom folks who had seen mailing lists go inactive, web admins take their fanfic sites down due to copyright, entire fandoms burnt to the ground in flame wars, said ‘fuck that we’re making our own place’ and that’s how AO3 got made.
That’s important. A lot of folks move to AO3, because well, the rules let them. The rules say ‘you can throw literally anything up here so long as it’s fan content and is not literally illegal, so we don’t get taken down’. It’s a swing for the first generation internet users, those kids who know this place is a wilderness and are carving out our own sanctuary.
But. The children under us. The children for whom AIDS is a nightmarish fairy tale, for whom the ghost stories are conversion therapy, for whom know they can’t really talk to their parents about being queer but can trust they probably won’t get kicked out over it. The children who haven’t spent ten seconds without supervision except online, and their reaction isn’t ‘oh thank god I’m finally free to express myself’ but ‘if I get in trouble, who will protect me?’.
And there’s nobody there. Because we went in knowing there was no backup. And that was fine. But now, the actual adults have figured out that hey uh, maybe we should make cyber laws? Maybe we should make revenge porn and grooming children over the internet crimes? And they grew up with that. They grew up learning that no, even if your parents are suffocating and controlling, they’re always be there for you! Some adult will always be there to protect you!
That isn’t the case. It’s not. But they expect it, because it’s always been done for them. They don’t really want to change the status quo, because that means doing it themselves. They can’t do that, because they don’t know how, they’ve been controlled for every single part of their lives thanks to helicopter parenting and without that control, they don’t know how to keep their lives together, and they demand someone come and control it for them, without restraining them.
Effectively, they want someone to ensure they never face the consequences of their actions. Helicopter parents will rescue you from whatever you did, because you’re their precious baby and it doesn’t matter if you punched a kid, you can do no wrong and the other kid clearly started it.
But being queer is doing wrong. Being queer is something Jeezus doesn’t approve of. So they want to make it something he could approve of! But if it’s too off what they consider to be okay, if it’s too different and weird and wrong and evil, that can’t do, that’s still bad, and they’re precious angels, and children, and minors, why are we the adults not protecting them and letting them see it? Why aren’t we being just like their parents  but queer-friendly, why aren’t we protecting the children?
The adults who taught us were the children of those who died as a result of AIDS. The eldest of my generation knew some of them personally. My therapist’s younger brother died at 20 of AIDS, and she told me what it was like. But they don’t have that. These kids of web 3.0, they don’t have that. What they have is over-controlling parents, and the expectation that someone will always be there to protect them but hopefully in ways that don’t hurt them this time, no real understanding of why Category A queer elders are the way they are, and so much internalized shame that they have to do some pretty fancy logic-leaping to keep them from collapsing entirely.
They can’t turn into Category A queer youngsters, because they don’t know how to unravel the system around them, because they’ve never had to actually make choices in their lives and live with the consequences, because they don’t have the example of how to do it. They can’t unravel their internalized shame because again, that’s hard and they don’t have their parents to take away the consequences and pain. It doesn’t come easy to them, so it may as well not come at all.
But, you ask, if Category A queer elders aren’t around to teach the kids, then how are they learning anything positive at all? Well, Category B, our university-tenured TERFs, who don’t want to change the status quo but want to just be at the top of it instead.
For a lot of kids who don’t know how to make hard choices but want to be queer, this is an extremely attractive option. But when they go online to queer spaces, a lot of them say fuck terfs, we don’t support your hate, and they go ‘yeah okay that makes sense’. They can say fuck terfs without ever actually questioning why terfs are bad. They’re Bad and Evil, just like drug addicts, just like fairytale nazis, just like the evil homophobes.
And we saw them say ‘yeah fuck terfs’ and we were like, ‘aight you got it’ and we never questioned if they actually understood us. They didn’t. They didn’t, and we didn’t do enough to fix it, because not enough of us realized the problem. So terfs got a little sneaky. They hid behind dogwhistles and easy little comments, hiding their rhetoric in queer theory that you’ll absolutely miss if you just memorize it and never actually question it and understand why that point is being made.
This goes back to America sucking, because their school system is far more focused on rote memorization over actual logic and understanding of the text. They’re engaging with queer theory the way they’ve been taught, which is memorize and don’t think, don’t question. Besides, questioning and understanding is hard. Being shown different points of view and asked what they think is not only hard but requires them to go against all of the conditioning that says to just listen and agree and never question it, which goes back to tearing the system and internalized shame down, and we’ve established they can’t do that so naturally they don’t do that.
This begets, then, the rise of exclusionary politics. They’re turning into Category B queer youngsters, because we told them ‘hey that’s a terf talking point what are you doing’ and they never questioned why. They learned you can do all sorts of things, just don’t say X, Y, or Z, because they never thought deeply about it.
The children who have grown on Web 3.0 do not want to do any heavy lifting to make things easier for themselves long-run. They want to do as little as possible and have things get better for them. There isn’t enough of us left in Category A, because Category B terfs are very good at recruiting young folks and Cat. A is overwhelming poor, dead, and easily dismissed in the system as evil and bad, so we can’t exactly convince the young folks to listen. If all of the young kids could agree to tear down the system, a lot more older folks might listen. Change always starts with the young, and there’s a reason for that.
But Republicans have figured out, if you get people fighting, they never put together a force that can actually stop you. TERFs, who want the exact same thing as Republicans but with themselves on top, are doing this to queer youth, and Cat. A elders can’t fight back because there isn’t enough of them and the odds are against them, and the young folk like me who follow their lead.
People can kinda handle gay people. It’s not so far from the acceptable normal that it’s impassable. But you want them to handle kinky people? Gay people of colour? Kinky gay people of colour? Trans people? Those are bridges too far to step across. The original idea was to get the foot in the door with marriage equality and inch our way through with racial equality, sex positivity, dismantling ableism and perisexism (forgive me if that isn’t the word for anti-intersex ‘ism), and see if we can’t patch up the system instead of inciting a civil war over this and have to tear down the system entirely.
Well, we might’ve managed that if not for AIDS being the perfect ‘Jeezus is killing all the evil gay people for being sinners’ propaganda machine. As it stands now, not a chance in hell. So long as Republicans and terfs keep everyone fighting, nobody has the power to dismantle their empire, and they stay in power.
So then, you ask me, “Lu what the fuck does that have to do with the decline of otherkinity on tumblr???” and now that you’ve got all that background knowledge, here is your answer.
Those children who want their experiences curated for them and the evil icky content they don’t like to be gone because it disgusts them and anything that disgusts them is clearly sinful problematic and should be destroyed, are what we call ‘antishippers’, or anti for short.
They like being progressive. Sort of. They learned what Republicans and terfs have honed to a fine talent: keep people fighting, hold them to a bar they have to constantly make or risk being ostracized, and harass the people who don’t play along into getting out of your sight forever. Sound familiar?
They learned of otherkinity, and particularly fictionkind, because web 3.0 means if something goes viral on one site, it doesn’t just go viral on that site, it makes it to worldwide newspapers and twitter and nobody ever, ever fucking forgets it. They realized the following: “Hey wait, if I’m this character for realsies, not only does it help me deal with the internalized shame I’ve done nothing to actually fix because that takes work, I can also tell these people who draw gross content I don’t like they’re hurting me personally, and that actually sounds credible, and I can shame them into stopping”.
If this is your first time here and that sounds sickening, it damn well should, and I am so, so sorry that any of us had to witness this, and I am more sorry I and everyone else who personally witnessed this didn’t realize what was going on and put a stop to it. I answer asks and browse the tags and clear up misinformation and it isn’t just a genuine desire to help. It’s damage control, and my own way of trying to deal with the guilt of not stopping this. I’m well aware I couldn’t have seen it coming, I was a teenager myself still learning and no one person has that much power. I still feel like I should have done more, and I’ll do what I can to fix what’s within my power to fix.
So back to the story. This all culminates around 2016 or so. Trump wins the election, and every queer person ever knows they’re fucked, and the younger generation’s only ever heard horror stories, never seen actual oppression that this could bring. We’re all scared. We all don’t know what to do. Nobody has any answers or any control over the situation.
So they lash out. They attack others for drawing things they don’t like, for challenging them in literally any way, for asking them to reconsider the vile shit they just said, for so much as defending themselves from the harassment they just got. And when challenged, they yell “But I’m a minor! A literal child! How dare you attack me, clearly you get off on this, you evil pedophile!” and they sling around every insult in the book until one sticks. Pedophile is a pretty good one, so is abuser, and sometimes zoophile works out too. Freak is great, everyone gets right pissed off about it.
The fact that Category A queer elders were called pedophiles and freaks is not a fact they know or care about. The fact that they are quickly making every fandom community super toxic is also not a fact they care about. The fact that the ‘kin community has words and terminology and they actually mean shit, and the fact that they’re spreading misinformation faster than we can keep up with, are not facts they care about.
So they come in, take our terms, make it impossible for us to find new folks. They realize our anger is easily a power trip, because we’re already made fun of, so they get off on the little power they can find and make fun of us too, and then when we get rightfully annoyed and pissed off, they can hide behind being minors.
Then tumblr implements their porn ban, because nobody’s stopping them, because it isn’t profitable to have porn on here. Considering most of the otherkin community, and most fandom communities, are full of adults who do occasionally talk about NSFW things, and the fact that they’re just banning everyone who so much as breathes wrong, this begins the start of a mass exodus, scattering already fragile communities to twitter, pillowfort, dreamwidth, and a few other places. Largely, twitter, where you can’t make a post longer than a snappy comeback and where the algorithm is literally designed to piss you off as much as possible.
So community elders have largely left, because they can’t stand the drama and the pain of what’s happened, and that’s if they didn’t get banned for being kinky furries who do talk about how their kintypes merge with their sexuality. Most community members have also left or stopped talking about being ‘kin, because they get associated with antishippers and toxicity and it’s just not worth it. Those of us who are left get drowned out by misinformation and trolls and wishkin and antishippers who appropriate our terminology because it supports them getting a power trip, and whenever we argue, we get called pedophiles and freaks and worse.
And now there isn’t much left. I hope we get to find a better place. Othercon was a good place to talk about it, I did a whole panel (it’s on Youtube!) about what we want to do about it. But I don’t really have any answers.
But to sum it all up... America’s political climate ultimately culminated in destroying queer spaces, and we survived, and then people who wanted to destroy smaller communities to get on top showed up and we were all but defenseless against something we had never, ever dealt with before on this scale.
One of my twitter mutuals mentioned how kinning and otherkin are now completely separate communities. It’s really the best I can do to keep hoping that continues, until nobody realizes the words are at all connected to each other. It’s the best anyone can hope for, now. I hate it. I hate every part of this. But maybe we can salvage what’s left.

Faux Activism and Exclusionary Practices.
Before I even begin this week's text post, I have to make it abundantly clear: All Black Lives must matter to you if you are going to be an "activist" or a social justice warrior. That said, let's have a conversation about what and why this new wave of activism in the black community is not inclusive nor real.
1. OUTRAGE
The outrage over the unnecessary killings and highly preventable deaths of black men and women is one hundred percent real and warranted. However, as I have noticed in my personal social media timelines, many people are unknowingly (or purposefully) excluding the names of trans people and non-binary people. This is abhorrent and frankly disgusting. Black people exist in every facet of life: from being a cis-woman who has a loving husband to being a trans man who lives with his life gay, cis-partner. Every version of the black experience is valid and worthy of protection and acceptance. Women and LGBTQIA+ folx have a hard time already existing in a straight, white, male dominated world. Imagine tacking on the fact that they are black. Now they experience two to three different forms of discrimination for things they didn't decide nor have the ability to change. If you are outraged at the injustices inflicted upon our people for generations, then you MUST also include your gender non-conforming friends and their experiences as well. Do not practice and exclusionary version of "Black Lives Matter." At that point, you are a hypocrite and liar because you, yourself do not see the value in the non-traditional (for lack of a better term) black life.
2. SILENCE
For the first week of protests and surge of political dismantling, we saw the names of nearly every black man who had died as a result of unjust policing and a corrupt government. Rarely did we see popular activists or celebrities mention the names of Breonna Taylor, Sandra Bland, or Atatiana Jefferson. Rarely did we see the same outpour of grief and support for the women also impacted by the world we live in. Never, in that first week, did I see a video or post about how to help locate the thousands of lost black girls snatched from inner cities. Last time I checked, the human mind is capable of focusing on more than one tragedy at a time. To not share the same loudness when it comes to the plight of the black woman is to be silent. As we have learned over the last few weeks: silence is deafening. It doesn't surprise me that our people don't make nearly as much noise behind the oppression and destruction of the black woman. This is the same community that had a generation raises young girls to "dress appropriately when there are men in the house," you know...the house the men are VISITING and you are STAYING in. The same group of people who deem black women ghetto for having multiple partners and children from said partners but praises men because "it must be so hard taking care of all those kids...as a man." The same delegation of humans who will bash a darkskin woman in order to praise a lightskin or non-black woman. Let me digress. The treatment of black women is so ingrained in to our psyche that we, as women, catch ourselves subconsciously giving in to these misogynistic practices. When my step mother tells me I should cover up because I live in a house with men, when my job tells me the uncomfortable advances from male customers is normal and I should just ignore it, or when the first lady of my church deems my knee length skirt too short simply because the old, perverted men in the sanctuary can't stop staring. It is done from a place of "protection" in their eyes but it stems from something deeper. To destroy the black woman is to destroy the black man, essentially. Every black man comes from a black woman. Before you try arguing in terms of "mixed kids with white mothers," learn basic genetics: the mixed boy with a black dad and white mom has a black grandma. His father's mother, and her mother and so forth, are all black. Do not be silent when Black women are oppressed, slain and abused. Be as loud as you are when George and Trayvon were taken from us. Be as loud as you are when your sport's team loses. Do not allow the black woman's life to be lost without at least trying to protect it.
3. PETITIONS AND DONATIONS
Yes, signing your name on petitions and opening your purse to the many sites created to help protesters is a great way to help make change but it isn't the only way nor is it the most effective. Stop bashing people who do not see the value in signing an online petition amd start suggesting other ways to be active in this fight. Organize something in your neighborhood, attend a protest, help localize the situations going on if none of the tragedies apply to your town. Educate yourself and a friend. There are many other ways to protest and be active in the community other than donating money you may not have or signing a petition because twitter user funyunslover48 told you to. This is a direct message to those demonizing others for not signing petitions online or donating online. Its not the end of the world if the petition with 400,000 signatures doesn't get signed by Sandy because Sandy has signed ten other ones today and doesn't feel like she has to sign another. I will say, as a counter, if you haven't signed at least one petition or donated anywhere of you could, then you are definitely not helping and you need to find some links and sign some ink. Period.
4. ORGANIZING
My only statement for this is to look at living, civil rights activist. Revisit history a bit and do what you can to try and rally our people together as a whole. We need, as a collective, to have leaders in the community who are bringing us together from all sides. Paris, London, Tokyo, and parts of New Zealand have all had BLM protests in accordance with the ones happening in every state in America. We must unite ourselves somehow so that the true message of what we're fighting for, globally, is not lost nor is it misconstrued. This is my only suggestion for this section.
In all, the practices that have been going on for the last two weeks have been positive and good mostly. However, there is always room for improvement and there needs to be room for those who we have been constantly ostracizing. Now is the time for black people of all sexualities, genders, ages, and backgrounds to come together and fight for ourselves. We cannot say that our lives matter if we exclude our women and LGBTQIA+ family. We are united by our shared experiences and culture, please do not let who someone shares a bed with at night deter you from that fact.

Which of These 5 Blackjack Stereotypes Are You?
Tumblr media
If you have actually invested any time at an online blackjack table, no question you've encountered some real personalities. Blackjack players are a special whole lot, due to the fact that the video game they're playing is special. Blackjack is a table video game, sure, but it's a casino-banked video game in which gamers complete only against your house. Great blackjack play calls for a ton of strategy and also abstract idea, an additional truth that separates it from the typical card or table game. Basically, blackjack gamers typically have strong characters. I would certainly claim that every blackjack player I've ever encountered at a casino site fits into one of these five broad classifications:
The Social Butterfly The Social Butterfly remains in the gambling enterprise to have a good time. They generally have tiny bankrolls, little suggestion of how to play, and also very little of a schedule in regards to approach or winning. I 'd state most of blackjack players drop under this heading. And there's absolutely nothing in any way wrong keeping that. You'll observe that gamers of this range play based upon suspicions. If you handed them an approach card, they 'd be respectful as well as thanks, however I doubt they would certainly have any type of concept exactly how to use it. The Social Butterfly is the person at your table that appeals a soft 17 while he regales you with tales from his meat handling plant back house. Social Butterfly gamers divided constantly and forget to draw sufficient in circumstances with a positive expectation. It's excellent to have a few of these gamers at your table. They keep your home satisfied with their sloppy play and also hefty ideas, encourage everybody to take shots, and also keep the party ambience at its peak. So long as you do not get distracted by their energetic mindset, they're no risk.
The Mathematics Whiz The Mathematics Whiz remains in the casino as a type of worthy quest. He's either a really clever man who happens to have located himself in Las vega for a bachelor party, or he's on his means to ending up being a specialist player or card-counter. No mathematics whiz is playing blackjack to have a good time. I 'd claim fewer than one in 10 blackjack players hold true mathematics geniuses. These gamers have a little knowledge of the video game, essentially, and depend on statistics for the optimal play. Their understanding of blackjack probably includes standard method, and also you'll find a shocking variety of them doubling after payouts in tribute to the Martingale System. I'm not crazy about having one of these guys at my table. I have actually discovered that they have a tendency to slow the video game down, mulling over their position or the dealer's up-card. To make matters worse, they're rarely sociable sufficient for my taste.
The Nervous Nelly The Nervous Nelly is in the casino regardless of their best efforts to stay out of them. You can acknowledge a Nervous Nelly straight off-- they keep an eye out of area, they're saucer-eyed, overwhelmed, and also maybe even a little sweaty. They clutch a little amount of cash limited in their hands as well as approach the table with anything yet self-confidence. Virtually as many Anxious Nellies exist as Social Butterflies. I would certainly say most of the Butterfly archetype were, at one point, Worried Nellies, unsure just how to play, resistant even to request aid. They have little or no understanding concerning gambling enterprise gambling, much less blackjack. They have actually probably ended up at the blackjack table unintentionally, or because it's the only gambling game they've come across in the past. We need to be patient with novices. At once, I was as nervous as any one of the Nellies I have actually played alongside in casino sites. The technique is to lift them up, in a manner of speaking. Fill them know game rules as well as etiquette. Talk to them about fundamental method. Direct them in the direction of a respectable game trainer or short article on blackjack. I totally rely on betting karma-- helping a person become accustomed to the video game simply may expand your following winning touch a couple of rounds.
The Amateur Card-Counter The Amateur Card-Counter remains in the gambling enterprise to perfect or display her capacity to defeat the casino site with her brain. She's not part of any kind of professional network or team designed to tear the online casino off on a grand scale-- she might not also win all that much, depending on her capacity level. However she has one goal as well as just one goal in mind-- as well as finding that is how you identify this gamer. Amateur Card-Counters can and will certainly spend a little extra time counting cards and also keeping and readjusting their wagering to fit. Honestly, I would certainly state you have concerning a 1% opportunity of playing beside a real amateur counter. They require to practice this skill constantly or they lose it-- so if you do spot an amateur counter, you may be seeing her again and again. In my experience, it's a drag to play with a gamer of this kind. As I currently discussed, they have a tendency to slow the video game way down. But they additionally don't have the patience or the self-confidence to engage in any kind of sort of discussion or communication with you or the dealership while they function. They make the table all the more boring by typically recovering cost over the course of their session.
The Blackjack Pro True professionals make up a portion of a percent of the casino betting population. Being a pro or even a semi-pro blackjack player needs focus, effort, devotion, and also technique in amounts that most people simply do not have. True pros are consistent champions at the blackjack table. In some cases it might be alongside impossible to find a pro beyond the truth that he seems to win method greater than he sheds. He knows much more about the casino, the video game, and maybe even the dealership of your game than any individual else in the space. They often tend to play for brief session, perhaps an hour or much less. They make a hasty resort and leave little bit in the way of an impact. That's right-- surprise, shock, blackjack professionals do not like to be known.
Conclusion Each of the 5 archetypes over come with positive and adverse characteristics. Without the Social Butterflies of this globe, table video games would be dull. Worried Nellies remind us to adhere to etiquette policies and also help us review the game by asking tons of concerns. Every one of the characters over has something excellent to offer. The next time you're kicking back a blackjack table, take a look at the other players. No doubt you'll locate among each of the above stereotypes playing right by your side.

VLD4x03 – “Black Site”
4x03 – “Black Site”
Interesting to note that both this episode and last episode were directed by Steve In Chang Ahn. I haven’t yet seen any other instances within a single season of a person directing back-to-back episodes, so I wonder what this suggests about the production of season four. Also, this episode was written by the show’s Story Editor, Tim Hedrick, which becomes relevant to my criticism of this episode in a bit.
We open with Haggar/Honerva – it is really cumbersome to differentiate with the two names, and I do think this show expects us to do so. She is distraughtly staring into a magical reflective energy bubble (because apparently basic mirrors can’t be bothered with when you’re a space witch) at the brown skin face of an emaciated Honerva. She still has a clawed, purple Haggar hand though. I remain uninvested in Haggar, so the emotion of inner turmoil that the show thinks it’s giving us with her here makes me go ugh. She changes the color of her face to purple, indicating that this is a choice she is making. She is Altean, and it’s been a while since we’ve seen an Altean change their appearance (Allura first revealed this ability in 1x12 “Collection and Extraction,” though such a significant ability has never since been relevant to the story, which seems like a big narrative underuse for something so powerful).
The Druids are still torturing the Galra commander of the base from 3x06 “Tailing a Comet,” who says it must have been Lotor who attacked him. This is a change, since he wasn’t naming anyone when he was tortured at the end of 3x06. I really wish shows would stop aggrandizing the imaginary idea that torture produces true information. Haggar comments, “No one can completely wipe a memory away,” which of course is a narrative double-voiced reference to herself in the guise of referencing the commander. The show tries to write Haggar as being the bad person who doesn’t remember being Honerva, but I really hate that because it’s done to absolve Honerva of her terrible behavior, behavior that began long before she became so poisoned that she lost her memory and started calling herself Haggar. That this show thinks it depicts Honerva to be a good person with no bad behavior – they basically try to absolve Honerva with a Devil-made-me-do-it excuse – disturbs me.
The Castle Ship is landing on Olkarion, carrying more refugees. Coran identifies them as “a few hundred more souls looking for a new home.” Shiro reidentifies them as “a few hundred more soldiers in the fight against the Galra.” It bothers me that the show conflates being a refugee with being willing to fight in war. By definition, war refugees are people who are trying to escape war. But even if Shiro is accurate, and the refugees depicted in this show are willing to fight in the war, the show never shows them fighting. I never get a sense that this billion-member Voltron Coalition contributing to the war is ever any more than a few dozen people.
Pidge returns. Everyone happily runs to meet her. Of course, I still can’t help but to compare this to how everyone reacted in 4x01 “Code of Honor” to Keith returning. Pidge has brought Matt with her (because apparently he can abandon his post as a rebel and come with her). Pidge introduces Matt to everyone, including Allura.
The first time I watched this episode was the weekend after season seven was released. I had gone through the two weeks between San Diego Comic Con and the release of season seven so happy that the show was finally going to have some clear queer inclusion through the revelation about Shiro and Adam. But then, before I could start my viewing marathon to get caught up on the show and watch season seven that weekend, discussion of the realities of the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it level of inclusion and the use of the bury-your-gays trope with Adam’s character was happening online. So, by the time I was watching this episode, I was in an aggravated mindset. And then I saw this scene.
The blatant, over-the-top depiction of Matt’s attraction to Allura infuriated me. Watching it now, I can just see the scene as yet another instance of heterosexual privilege, in which the depiction of a man attracted to a woman is not subtle or hidden. It’s glaring. The double standard makes me feel ill. Matt’s behavior is over the top and feels like a celebration of the dominance of men being attracted to women in American storytelling. I can easily imagine that those responsible for this scene – writer, director, executive producer – they all are so ignorant of the privilege afforded to the perspective of men attracted to women that they were (and still remain) clueless to how obnoxious this scene is and how obnoxious they were in creating it.
And of course, Lance is jealous. I haven’t been interested in Lance’s jealousy over Allura before, I’m not interested now.
Matt sees Shiro. This is part of this scene that I really like. Matt holds out his hand to shake Shiro’s, calling him “Sir.” I appreciate that Matt has such clearly depicted respect for Shiro. Shiro shakes his hand briefly before pulling Matt in for a hug. Shiro is not a boring commander-guy character, and moments like this prove it. He has a significant softer side. He deeply cares about the people with whom he serves. Recontextualizing this knowing that this is the clone, he still feels so warmly about people that he wants to hug them, so again, he’s clearly not an “evil thing.” He also expresses a willingness to continue the search for Pidge and Matt’s dad.
And the scene ends with Lance continuing to be jealous.
Zarkon is being put into some new armor, complete with constant quintessence vials built in. Haggar complains to him about Lotor, and Zarkon responds by condemning Haggar’s elevating Lotor to the position of authority that he’s in. “It’s time to relieve my wayward son of his duties,” Zarkon says. This is only beginning to hint at the abuse that Zarkon and Haggar have inflicted over the millenia on Lotor. That this show writes Zarkon and Haggar to be abusive and then ends the show by demanding we absolve and forgive them for their abusive behavior is infuriating. This element of the show’s plot is an insult against every one of us who have been abused by a parent.
There’s a longer-than-it-should-have-been scene of Pidge giving Matt a tour of the Castle Ship. All the information in it is information we viewers have known for a long time, so it’s not adding anything new to the show. Because of that, it’s mostly a worthless scene. The quick cut and tonal shift of the voice acting of “This is our cow,” from Pidge, however is funny.
Lotor’s people are busy working on building another part of the Sincline. Lotor’s been summoned back to Zarkon’s throne. Given how he talks to his generals, he couldn’t care less about Zarkon resuming as Emperor. Narti accompanies Lotor.
There’s a scene with Allura and Coran and the cow. It’s supposed to be funny.
Lotor meets with Zarkon and Haggar. Zarkon relieves Lotor of his position and speaks with clear disdain. Zarkon says both, “Your short reign will be regarded as a black spot on the Galra Empire for years to come,” and, “You are no longer needed.” This is just a glimpse at how he has treated Lotor over the millennia, and it’s already clearly abusive. Lotor’s face as he walks away reaffirms his comment in the earlier scene that he doesn’t view holding the throne right now as being necessary for his plans.
Haggar says, “I sensed a powerful energy on [Lotor] when he entered.” Well, that’s vague writing. She creeps around and stares at Narti. The camerawork clearly focuses in on Narti, not Kova. After departing, Lotor detects and destroys a tracker that’s been placed on his ship.
Between milkshakes and now Hunk lounging with food, none of the Paladins in this episode seem like they’re busy dealing with a war. Large parts of season four have this odd casual tonal quality to scenes and plots that feels so off in an ongoing story about a war.
Referencing an element to the episode 2x07 “Space Mall,” Lance sits in the dark playing the video game he and Pidge bought at the mall. The game is stylized after old 8- and 16-bit RPGs. Given my own history with such games, I genuinely feel nostalgic seeing it depicted this way. Coran and Allura interrupt because they want more milk. So, we get another long scene with the cow. We do learn that Lance knows how to milk a cow, which is not an everyman skill. Coran and Allura react in horror, so we can conclude that Alteans aren’t similar to mammals (why do female Alteans have breasts then?). It’s like they’ve never seen someone consume something extracted from an animal before, but I can’t believe that the two of them are so socially isolated that they’ve never encountered someone who does, even if they themselves do not. I imagine that the writer and director did this scene without much of any thought to the anthropological implications it contains. They just thought it was funny. To me, it just feels out of place. Again, it’s so casual.
Lotor returns to his generals. Axca reports the second “comet” ship is complete. Again, the camerawork focuses on Narti, not Kova, and we see that Haggar is watching Lotor through her. How she can be doing so through Narti, who we know is blind and has no depicted eyeballs, I don’t know. “No!” Haggar says in some raspy, desperate voice upon hearing that Lotor is building ships. She hears the word “comet” and jumps to the conclusion that it’s the same kind of “comet” Voltron was made from. This is another instance of this show having people jump to conclusions because the show needs them to, not because it would be logical that they would make such a conclusion. It’s a cheat, a shortcut in writing.
Haggar tells Zarkon, who assumes Lotor is keeping them secret so that he can use them against the Empire. Again, this feels like a jump to a conclusion, but it also could be that Zarkon is a megalomaniac, so he thinks everything is about him. He orders his fleet to “hunt down Prince Lotor.”
Pidge, Matt, and Hunk do something to improve the Castle Ship’s ability to track Galra ships. They also decipher Galra communications that they had previously been unable to do. They learn Zarkon is alive. They also can see Zarkon’s fleet moving toward Lotor’s base. There’s a team meeting. Pidge finally says she thinks she can upgrade Voltron as a whole with the cloaking technology she’s been using for ages on the Green Lion. She says she’s been working on it for a while but that she can’t pilot the Green Lion and operate the cloaking at the same time. That makes no sense whatsoever since she can pilot Green and use Green’s cloak simultaneously. It’s more contrived writing to put Matt in Green with Pidge.
Lotor’s base is attacked. Voltron shows up, cloaks, and observes from a distance. Lotor moves so that he, his generals, and the remaining part of the “comet” can escape on the two Sincline ships created so far. “How did they find us,” Axca asks. “We must’ve been tracked,” Zethrid responds. Lotor then jumps to the conclusion that it’s because of Narti. The camerawork clearly focuses on Narti, not Kova. Since Kova was with Lotor just as much as Narti was, there’s no reason for him to assume Narti and not the possibility of Kova, especially since Kova originated with Honerva/Haggar. But Lotor jumps to the conclusion that it’s Narti’s fault because the writing is again cheating, and he kills Narti.
This terrible writing was a portent that we can only see in hindsight of how badly the conclusion of the clone plotline would be written. Just like with the clone of Shiro, the show here instantly writes Narti to be worthy of death. No consideration of her innocence. No recognition that she’s being used by Haggar. It’s the same with the clone. The writers of this show think that if you lose your agency, that you are worthy of death. The writers would probably react to this criticism of Narti’s death by saying Lotor’s a villain, but since they do to the clone of Shiro the same thing for the same reason, they reveal through their writing choices that this is how they think. If someone deprives you of agency, you are “evil” and deserve to die.
Also, what message does it send that this show introduced Narti as blind and could have given us an interesting character of diverse representation, but instead they use her as death fodder, with the narrative placing the blame on her instead of on Haggar. It started most definitively in 3x07 “The Legend Begins,” but the writers of this show wrote with the purpose of absolving Honerva/Haggar of her behavior for a long time on this show. I guess it should be no surprise that that absolution is the climax of the series. Writing is about making choices. Every moment like this is a choice. And this episode was written by the show’s Story Editor (at this point in its production) Tim Hedrick.
Lotor doesn’t explain himself, as he walks away after killing Narti, and none of his generals have any reaction. Narti is a woman with whom Axca, Ezor, and Zethrid have been working closely for a long time now. And none of them react to seeing Lotor kill her. None of them demand to know why.
Lotor and his remaining generals leave on the Sincline ships. Despite the hugeness of space, his two relatively small ships fly so closely to Voltron that Voltron sidesteps Lotor’s ships at he last minute. There is literally no reason for this to happen except the writing is contrived. The show wants an excuse to end Voltron’s cloaking. Why Voltron, seeing Lotor’s ships coming at them, having more than enough time to move out of the way, only does so at the literal last second possible is senseless. Again, contrived.
Voltron destroys dozens, maybe even hundreds of Galra ships.
Zarkon issues an Empire-wide message: Lotor is deemed an enemy of the state, and Zarkon wants Lotor killed on sight. This ordering Lotor’s execution and dying in combat with Lotor in episode 5x02 “Blood Duel” are the only significant things Zarkon does in the show after the battle at the end of season two. There’s very little reason for him to have survived the end of season two. And here he is, ordering the execution of his son, and that’s one of his endless horrible actions that he’s absolved of by the show in the final season.
A lot of blame for the bad storytelling in this show goes to the show’s executive producers, absolutely. But I don’t absolve the show’s Story Editor either, especially when he’s the writer of an egregious episode like this.

BE AN EXPERT IN A BAD PROCRASTINATION
Any ambitious person now. One of the cases he decided was brought by the owner of a food shop. And if your startup succeeds, it will have to keep writing checks, founders were never forced to explore the limits of how little they needed them. My rule is that I can spend as much time online as I want, as long as you keep morphing your idea. The EU was designed partly to simulate a single, large domestic market. Larry and Sergey took money from VCs, and Sequoia specifically, because Larry and Sergey when they wrote the first versions of Google. We had a page in our site trying to talk merchants out of doing real time authorizations. Between them, these two facts are literally a recipe for making money. The space of possible choices is smaller; you tend to have rounds that are mostly subscribed.
Ultimately it comes down to your own product and approach to the market. Real problems are interesting, and I said to him, ho, ho, ho, ho, you're confusing theory with practice, this eval is intended for reading, not for computing. Frankly, it surprises me how small a role in software? Hence what, for lack of a better name, I'll call the Python paradox: if a company chooses to write its software in a comparatively esoteric language, they'll be able to solve predefined problems quickly as to be able to reproduce this at most colleges if you make something they like. Meanwhile a similar fragmentation was happening at the other end of the world was like you'd find in a children's book, and presumably God's book is universal. More important, I think, should be the highest goal for the marginal. I don't think you would find those guys using Java Server Pages. A silicon valley has to be more outsiders than insiders, if insider means anything. A lot of investors hated the idea, but the result of making college the canonical path for the ambitious ones it can be pulled apart, it will be. The government knows better than to get into the deals they want. How do we. Evan Williams came in to work the next day, and there will almost certainly be more of them.
What's really happening is that startup-controlled rounds are taking the place of series A rounds. Auto-retrieving spam filters would make the painting better if I changed that part? Software should be written in, he would have answered with as little hesitation as he does today. It implies there's no punishment if you fail. That could be a bit more daring in 1975 than 1965. As an illustration of what I mean about the relative power of programming languages from a distance, it looks like Java is the latest thing. Make something people want. US, and good startup ideas seem bad initially. So if you're an outsider you're constrained too, of course, but in fact I named after Rtm. If you can't find ten Lisp hackers, then your company is probably based in the wrong city for developing software.
A few hours before the Yahoo acquisition was announced in June 1998, we consumed what at the time, could get excited about such a thoroughly boneheaded idea, we should not be surprised that hackers aged 21 or 22 are pitching us ideas with little hope of making money. For example, in America people often don't decide to go to church for appearances' sake, while those who liked it would have. The curious thing is, faking does work to some degree on investors. In the startup world, most good ideas seem bad: If you spend all your time programming, you will fail. But a significant number do, and the customer. In Patrick O'Brian's novels, his captains always try to get as much as he's running Facebook. The record labels and movie studios used to distribute what they made like air shipped through tubes on a moon base. Pretty soon you'll start noticing what makes the number go up, put a big piece of paper on your wall and every day plot the number of things you can just hack together keeps increasing. In Shakespeare's time, mystery was synonymous with craft.
Palo Alto is not so miserably small as it might seem. Are patents evil? For example, Y Combinator has now invested in 80 startups, 57 of which are still alive. Their previous business experience consisted of making blue boxes to hack into the phone system, a business with the rare distinction of being both illegal and unprofitable. That was much harder to do in college? Go out of your round. With one exception: patent trolls.
Intelligence does matter a lot of time on bullshit things or lose to people who sent in proofs of Fermat's last theorem and so on. I know, unique to Lisp. But when Bill Clerico starts calling you, you may at least pause before making them. It would work on a variety of things. A world with outsiders and insiders implies some kind of art, stop and figure out what's going on. It had a programmable crawler that could crawl most of the applicants don't seem to get sued much by established competitors. Those whose jobs require them to judge art, like curators, mostly resort to euphemisms like significant or important or getting dangerously close realized. If founders' instincts already gave them the right answers than anyone would if they were sentient adversaries—as if there were a little man in your head always cooking up the most plausible arguments for doing whatever you're trying to make that traffic stop. I think is a red herring. If you make something good you can generate ten times as much traffic by word of mouth online than our first server; and if you have a big advantage. America people often don't decide to go to medical school till they've finished college. 100,000 people worked there.
The crazy legal measures that the labels and studios have been taking have a lot in common, you're not in a position to tell investors how the round is the first step. Barnes & Noble was a lame site; Amazon would have crushed them anyway. A company that sues competitors for patent infringement. In a traditional series A round than an angel round. Startups hate this as well, partly because as the company's daddy he can never show fear or weakness, and partly because at first the founders are young. A friend of mine visiting India sprained her ankle falling down the steps in a railway station. So maybe a recession is a good thing. You'd negotiate a round size and valuation with the lead, who'd supply some but not all of the money in the bank to make it, there are advantages to serendipity too, especially early in life. An accumulator has to accumulate. That's an important difference because it means a startup makes just enough to pay the founders' living expenses. Livable towns?
In 1917, doing everything himself seemed to Ford the only way to find good problems to solve in one head. But I doubt they could do searches online. It comes with a lot of companies are very much influenced by where applicants went to college. They win by locking competitors out of their way to help our startup succeed. It also means no one university will be good enough to act as the lead investor. What do they all have in common? On the Company page you'll notice a mysterious individual called John McArtyem. If that's what's on the other side. You're on the right track.
Thanks to Jeremy Hylton, Paul Buchheit, Jessica Livingston, Sam Altman, Harjeet Taggar, and Jackie McDonough for sparking my interest in this topic.
