On June 23rd 1314 Robert I, King of Scots, killed a young English Knight called Henry de Bohun, it marked the beginning of a two day fight, The Battle of Bannockburn.
I'll cover the battle more in depth tomorrow, today I'm going to cheat a bit by taking the description of the encounter between Sir Henry de Bohun and King Robert directly from John Barbour's epic poem The Brus. The poem is written in ancient Scots, but don't worry I will post a translation too!
Bohun, in full armour, had noticed King Robert out in front of his troops, the king riding on a smaller horse in light armour. The little crown on his helmet clearly identified him. Thinking that he could strike the critical blow by killing the Scottish king, Bohun charged towards him with lance lowered. But King Robert swerved at the crucial moment, stood in his stirrups, and brought his battle axe down through the head of Bohun, killing him instantly.
And quhen the king sua apertly
Saw him cum forouth all his feris
In hy till him the hors he steris.
And quhen Schyr Henry saw the king
Cum on foroutyn abaysing
Till him he raid in full gret hy,
He thocht that he suld weill lychtly
Wyn him and haf him at his will
Sen he him horsyt saw sa ill.
Sprent thai samyn intill a ling,
Schyr Hanry myssit the noble king
And he that in his sterapys stud
With the ax that wes hard and gud
With sua gret mayne raucht him a dynt
That nother hat na helm mycht stynt
The hevy dusche that he him gave
That ner the heid till the harnys clave.
The hand-ax schaft fruschit in twa,
And he doune to the erd gan ga
And flatlynys for him faillit mycht.
That wes perfornyst douchtely,
And quhen the kingis men sa stoutly
Saw him rycht at the first meting
Foroutyn dout or abaysing
Have slayne a knycht sua at a strak
Sic hardyment tharat gan thai tak
That thai come on rycht hardely.
Quhen Inglismen saw thaim sa stoutly
Cum on thai had gret abaysing
And specially for that the king
Sa smartly that gud knycht has slayne
That thai withdrew thaim everilkane
And durst nocht ane abid to fycht
Sa dred thai for the kingis mycht.
And quhen the kingis men thaim saw
Sua in hale bataill thaim withdraw
A gret schout till thaim gan thai mak
And thai in hy tuk all the bak,
And thai that folowit thaim has slane
Sum off thaim that thai haf ourtane
Bot thai war few forsuth to say
Thar hors fete had ner all away.
Bot how-sa quhoyne deyt thar
Rebutyt foulily thai war
And raid thar gait with weill mar schame
Be full fer than thai come fra hame.
This translation largely follows the version rendered by b A.A.M. Duncan (The Bruce, Canongate, 1997) but with some variation intended to represent more modern turns of phrase.
And when the king saw him (Bohun) Moving towards him in sight of his comrades He hastily turned his horse towards him And when Sir Henry saw the king Come on quite unabashed He rode at him full speed He thought to beat him easily And have him at the disadvantage Because the king was lightly horsed So they closed on one another Sir Henry missed the noble king And he (the king) stood in his stirrups With an axe both hard and good Struck him such a great blow That neither hat or helmet could stop The heavy clout he gave So he cleaved the head to the brains The hand-axe shaft broke in two And he (Bohun) fell to the ground Dead and devoid of all strength now This was the first blow of the battle And was done mightily too And when the king’s men saw this At the first encounter Done without any hesitation or fear Kill a knight with a single blow They were so encouraged That they advanced boldly forward When the Englishmen saw them stoutly advance They were left downcast Especially because the king Had so quickly slain such a good knight So they now all of them withdrew And not one dared to fight For fear of the king’s might And when the king’s men saw The (English) formation withdraw The (Scots) made a great shout at them

My Experiences With The Horned God
Ok goes without saying but this is my own experience, my upg. Whether or not things are historically accurate is NOT my concern with this post. I am simply documenting my experiences. I am also NOT a reconstructionist, I am an Eclectic Neo-pagan that draws inspiration from NUMEROUS sources.
In my experiences Worshipping The Horned One and The Goddess, they're definetly like, the Primary Godheads/Energy Archetypes of the universe/nature.
My experiences with the Horned One aligns pretty well with Feri tradition, albeit he's a bit more Faceted for me.
I Experience Him as The Lightbringer, The Lord of the Forest, and The Royal Darkness/The Arddu. I'll go into Detail Below:
The Lightbringer - The Solar and Illuminating aspect of the Horned God. This form of him is the divine rebel, and very much into embracing the joys of life and pleasure. I Break the Lightbringer down into two more facets: The Blue God, and The Solar God. Both are relatively similar but to me the Blue God (this name stems from Feri) is the more esoteric and taboo aspects of light, and The Solar God is the more nature based and wild aspects of the sun itself.
The Names I use currently for these are Oberon for the Blue God, and in the past for the Solar God I've called upon Apollo and his various celtic forms, but I can't seem to find a name that sticks. I've also used Lucifer for the Lightbringer as a whole, but I'm trying to frame this side of my practice in English and Celtic folklore specifically for sake of ease. I am including things like Shakespeare, Arthurian Legends, and so on in this.
The Lord Of The Forest - This tends to be the popularized form of the Horned God. Fertility, Nature, Animals, Magic, the Cycle of Life and Death. He is blending of both the LightBringer, and The Arddu. The Lord of the Forest is a seasonal God. With the Oak King being his Spring and Summer forms, and the Holly King being his cthonic Fall and Winter forms, but name wise, I use three.
Cocidius/Callirius being the more human form of this God. Mostly human aside from ears and antlers or horns.
Herne is the Median between human and Animal, primal yet civilized, he is at least to me, 50/50 in terms of man and beast, but can shift between either pending what you are doing. The way he manifests to me and his energy feels is basically Hircine from TES, and I have worked with him under that name in the past.
Cernunnos to me is the Animal aspect of him. He speaks through nature itself, and is the large stag in the woods. He is cthonic, he is liminal, he is primal. He is the green forest itself in the warm seasons, and the dead and rebirthing forest in the cold. Cernunnos is the masculine embodiment of nature itself.
The Arddu - The Dark/Shadow aspect of the Horned God. He is the master of the Witches Sabbath, the embodiment of death, decay, and the shadow. Since he is death he is also rebirth and transformation. He is not malevolent, actually quite the opposite, but he is not opposed to destroying things to rebuild them, nor is he opposed to baneful workings in any ways. The Arddu as I understand him, often appears as a humanoid black goat or Stag with a candle lit between his horns. Sometimes his head is a skull, sometimes it is not. Sometimes he is more human in appearance. Regardless, The Arddu fulfills the role of "folk devil" in my own practice, though I've moved away from calling him that, as Arddu, meaning Dark One, feels more natural to me. Though I am not against, and actually quite enjoy the reclamation of the word Devil.
The Arddu comes to me in two colors, Black and White.
Black is the color of the fertile soil, which is made that way through decay. Black is the color of the shadow, the subconscious, and the taboo. That which we as people are taught to fear, but once embraced gives us immense power. In this form he's been coming to me as Arawn, but also in the past has come to me as Sathanas and the archetypal Sabbatic Goat. He dons the skull of either a Stag, Ram, Wolf, or Goat, or has those skulls for his actual face.
White is the color often associated with the otherworld, and the Wild Hunt. The White Arddu is the Light Betwixt the Horns and the winter snows. He is faery king in essence. To me he manifests in a more humanoid form, and is very fae-like. He is a trickster, a teacher, and a phantom.. to me he appears as Gwyn Ap Nudd, and I understand Gwyn and Arawn to be two sides of the same coin in my path.

#13 Sea of Swords
Tumblr media
Start date: April 1st, 2022
End date: November 11th 2022
Card: king of clubs ;; Frivolity, intelligence and insight ;; is to be seen a good omen
Tweet: 'On the matter of pirates, love, old friends, and wasted potential'
1/10 clearly not my favorite
Notes: lets get this over with ; remember when I said I was trying not to take 3 months again? kept my word ;;sweat;
Full honesty, this one feels like trudging your shoes in the dirt ;; there are important moments! Wulfie gets his hammer back and is married, Drizzt + Catti start the possibility of getting together, and my favorite part of dragonlance - the dilemma of the long lasting
Tbh between these 7 months I don’t remember much so let’s try our best to piece together what quotes I felt memorable enough to take a pic of
I thought the fake out on the first page was cool
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bob’s a real family man and I think you’re very much to notice in this book
Tumblr media
Woman moment
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Regis (and bruenor) are usually outshined by their co cast while they’re mostly functionally and also bumbling; Regis took down Crenshinibon, got captured by entreri (on more than one occasion), ‘talked’ his way out of encounters (GET PENDANT’ED) and with his most recent spear to the shoulder injury he just doesn’t feel like he can keep up and do his part amongst the companions but he truly feels his place is with them and they with him
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally that “what are we?” question
We went through auckney again and saw Meralda + Feri again! There’s a couple of cute moments like when Catti-Brie feeds Drizzt soup or when she’s trying on dresses. Smth about Catti-Brie trying to get out of her comfort zone and be all fancy just warms my heart
Elifain, poor Elifain. Vengeance destroyed her. Did not feel good in this book, like im happy that Drizzt is alive but I didn’t think Lelorinel would be snuffed out as a character so quickly and it feels so meaningless, like the waste of a life. The book doesn’t go deeper than ‘I feel bad’ but im sure we’ll get an essay or two or maybe 6 about these events in upcoming books
Uhh Wulfgars going back home w his new family and Gandalugs overdue death (IM SORRY THATS SO MANY BUT IM JUST OVER IT I GET THAT THINGS HAVE TO HAPPEN UGHH) and now Bruneor’s king and everyone’s going back to Icewind Dale (more like Icewind Fail)
Ugh ending this w my favorite part

Tipped over the edge.
Blurb: Rhys Father has had enough of Rhys looking into the frivolous ideas and items of the human world. Characters: Rhys, Feri, Rhys Father (yet to be named)
TW: Minor Blood and Knife Mentions -
The blade tickled as it ran down along his spine. The coldness of the metal making his hair stand and his insides shudder. The firm grip on the horns from his head stopped him from being able to pull away with any ease, and one movement would surely lead to the knife in his back. On his knees, his hands pinned behind him, one of them currently crushed under the weight of the demon. He could feel the dull ache emanating up his wrist and throughout his arm.
“I told you to stop looking into the human realm.” The voice hissed, and the blade pressed slightly into his skin, just barely breaking the surface.
Rhys face was flushed with anger, and he tried once more to twist,
“Do you want this blade in your back? Would you really choose to die here over those books? I didn’t think I had raised a coward.”
The blade pressed in, this time he could feel the small indent, a droplet of blood dribbling down the small of his back.
“Can’t even speak to your old man?”
“I have nothing to say to you”
The moment the venom left his tongue it was replaced by the burn of the blade and the ache of his thighs as he was shoved downward, his horns being pressed back, causing him to arch onto the blade of his own accord. He could practically hear the bastard smiling.
The pressure continued, and blood began to drip from his back onto the floor.
He could feel as the blade drew deeper, trying to pull up, arch away, but he was stuck.
Suddenly a voice perked from the chamber doors, younger, ignorant. “Father!” The voice bellowed, joy laced in the words.
Everything froze. The man beside him stiffened, and swallowed a low groan. He felt warm breath brush his ear as his father leant in, his voice a low threatening tone.
“If you dare be found interacting with anything from that realm, or any other realm that is not our own, you will be disowned and dismembered by my hands.”
With that he was released and kicked over, his body sliding into the shadows. The swallowing him behind the chair where he could not be spotted. Barely trying to catch his breath, he caught a final glance at his fathers glare, before the man dipped into the stones, his horns being the last sight vanishing through the floor.
“Father?” The voice questioned, having gone unanswered for long enough.
Rhys could just barely see his brother, peering around on the balls of his feet. He had blood covering his arms, splatters of it in his hair and on his cheek. It made his stomach flip.
The man in question finally opened the door beside the chair with enough force to symbolize a king's entrance.
His arms were open in a warm greeting, something Rhys had never the true pleasure of receiving. “Feris! My boy, just look at you! A true warrior. Coated in victory.” he boasted as he slowly lazed back into his throne. He swore his father glanced back at him as he did, just to see if he was still there.
“How was the practice? How many did you wound?”
Rhys watched, crumpled, as his brother began to detail the training and the fights. He could not say when, perhaps he had zoned out a little as the adrenaline had started to waver. But at some point, he could not stomach any more, and took what little energy he had left, and sunk into the floor, back to his own chamber.
The cold stones were welcome under him, and he finally let out a sigh. A small sliver of light casting across his legs as he laid there, unwilling to move to his comforts. His back burning, head aching, and heart empty.
