I’m sighing with d’Artagnan here, because I was so ready to love the new movie and then… didn’t.

I felt like the film didn’t quite know what it wanted to be - a period drama, a mystery, an adventure story? Political or funny? Suspenseful or a slow build?

The pacing felt uneven, the changes they made to the novel were, imho, not making the story better, and they left out some iconic scenes that needed to happen. (The Wine Cellar Incident™️!)

Some of the casting choices weakened the movie and erased a good amount of chemistry between several characters.

The action scenes were confusing because everyone looked alike, dressed in indistinguishable brown. (Whatever happened to the iconic blue in the Musketeer uniforms? Just a splash would have made such a difference!) I did like the very feathery hats, though.

Eva Green didn’t get the right moments to shine. She may still get a chance when she plays off Vincent Cassel in part 2, but so far I’m underwhelmed by her performance.

Aramis looked like an aging gigolo who smells of horse dung and bad teeth, and while that’s certainly authentic, this version of him has nothing to do with Dumas’ Aramis in the novel. The fact that they put guyliner on him mellows my grudge a bit.

Athos? Looks like he’s in his sixties and Vincent Cassel, too, couldn’t really showcase the full force of his acting skills. The writing simply didn’t allow for that.

Porthos gets an okay from me. I really liked his energy, his positive attitude, and I was very surprised and fully agree with the writers’ decision to make him snack both men and women. He’s a man with an appetite, and I am here for it!

D’Artagnan was my favorite in the movie. He has a sparkle to him, and a youthful headstrongness that is very book!d’Art. His love story with sweet, self-confident Constance was the best part of the movie for me.

They tried a bit too hard to make the film more political-historical. Would’ve been a good idea if they’d executed it well. But again: the pacing is off, sometimes it all drags, and except for creating a good action scene in the cathedral, it didn’t work for me.

I did like that they fleshed out Milady’s backstory in terms of how she became a criminal, and I hope they will use the changes they made to make her character more ambiguous in part two.

And the musical score? I don’t know. I can’t remember a single note. Nothing stuck. Nothing swelled. That’s not how it should be, is it?

That’s the short of it: The whole movie simply wasn’t compelling.

There are worse ways to spend an evening, and there are worse movies, but this is a French adaption of “Les Trois Mousquetaires”, and I really and wholeheartedly had expected something to come out of it that was more than acceptable average.

I’ll watch part two, because I’m still curious how they’ll wrap it up, and I still hope it’ll draw me in. But until then I’ll remain sadly underwhelmed.

Hello fellow QSMP Tumblr people, I would like to make a offer and would love to see if this can catch on.

If we're adopting A1, let's go all out. We're taking care of this kid.

At least three times a week, someone on Tumblr, under the "qsmp a1 tasks" tag, should draw or write something about A1 doing at least one of the official tasks for that day or the prior few days (cause I know it takes time to draw or write). It doesn't have to be huge, could be anything from a sketch to a full picture or comic, from a few sentences to a full short story, as long as it appears under the tag and has something to do with A1 and one of the recent tasks! (Please say somewhere what task you're doing and what day it was from.)

A1 doesn't mind what name you use - Ai, Aaron, Ivan, just A1, something else entirely - as long as you still use the right tag so everyone can see that there's been a task completed. They also use any pronouns and have a whole wardrobe of accessories, again as long as it's clear in the art or story that the egg is A1 and not one of the other eggs.

Feel free though to include yourself or your OCs or one of the QSMP members or none or all of them, this is just a series of writing/drawing prompts with a purpose, go wild and have fun!

Due to it being Saturday already, required tasks won't start until this Monday. After that, let's see how long we can keep our community's new kid going!

Today, I'm thanking The X-Files community for bringing me across a wonderful show-- its amazing cast and writers and fans-- and inspiring me to get back on my own creative hobbyhorse.

Being a part of a collective who want to celebrate this show and others' creative endeavors with heartfelt good wishes has been exciting, fun... and humbling.

Je suivrai temporairement la balise « qsmp discourse » afin de pouvoir obtenir plus de mises à jour sur cette situation et lorsque le serveur s’ouvrira à nouveau.

Je viens de trouver toute cette putain de situation très bouleversante et même si je continue à penser positivement et que ça va aller mieux, avec tout ce qui se passe sur Twitter avec les admins, les CC’s le syndicat français et l’admin de Pomme, je commence a avoir mon les doutes. À un moment donné hier, j’ai eu une putain de dépression nerveuse à cause de toute cette situation et je ne veux tout simplement pas que Qsmp se termine si tôt si cette situation n’est pas résolve.

I have just found this whole fucking situation to be very upsetting and although I still have been thinking positive and that it will get better, with all the stuff on Twitter with the admins, CCs, French union and Pomme’s admin I am starting to have my doubts. At one point yesterday I had a fucking mental breakdown over this whole situation and I just don’t want qsmp to end so soon if this situation is not solved.

Sorry if it sounds like I’m doomsposting, I’m just really really worried about what is going to happen since I’m starting to not be convinced that things are getting better. I’d say what it needs for this situation to be fixed is communion between Quackity, the higher up’s and the admins to find a proper solution to this.

I’m just very tired of this shit and although it has only been three days, I do expect huge changes on behalf of the admins and the French side of the community. I’m done with the large post and I do hope things get better and huge changes come our way.

Babet and Molutor in ‘Le Monde des Prisons’

There are many interesting references made to Les Misérables in Le Monde des Prisons (1887) by Georges Moreau. This relatively unknown work features the detailed recollections of Moreau’s own interactions and conversations with real prisoners (“reproduire mes conversations”) during his tenure as an ‘aumônier’ at La Grande-Roquette prison in Paris. 

Throughout the account, Hugo’s writings on crime and criminal archetypes as featured in Les Misérables are frequently cited. This even extends to fleeting discussions about the police and prison system (click here for a rather intriguing comparison involving Javert).

However, there is a particularly notable chapter where a real-life criminal, identified only as Molutor, is compared extensively to the character of Babet:

“Victor Hugo a crayonné de main de maitre un joli quatuor de bandits, Claquesous Gueulemer, Babet et Montparnasse, qui, dit-il, gouvernaient, de 1830 à 1835, le troisième dessous de Paris, cette cave d'où sort Lacenàire. [...] Molutor (François-Joseph), le père de notre fugitif de la Petite-Roquette, avait été plus favorisé de la fortune que le Babet de Victor Hugo. Sa femme lui avait donné trois enfants qui, pour n'être pas nés avec un mufle de veau, lui avaient rapporté une petite aisance.”

[Trans. Victor Hugo has masterfully pencilled a lovely quartet of bandits, Claquesous, Gueulemer, Babet and Montparnasse, who, he says, ruled the third substage of Paris from 1830 to 1835, the cellar from which Lacenàire emerged. [...] Molutor (François-Joseph), the father of our Petite-Roquette fugitive, had been more fortunate than Victor Hugo's Babet. His wife had given him three children who, though not being born with a calf's muzzle, had brought him a small amount of wealth.]

I find these comparisons truly captivating, as— despite initially seeming rather trivial— allusions such as this uniquely blend real-life criminality with fictional realms.

Moreau goes on to elaborate that Molutor and the character of Babet share additional similarities because they both extend their criminal activities into theatrical spheres; Babet’s vaudeville performances and his displaying of ‘freaks’ are indirectly compared to Molutor’s activities as innkeeper of a real club named Le cabaret des Pieds. In an even more intriguing detail, Moreau describes Molutor as occasionally collaborating with a brute named ‘Gueule-de-Sac’— which makes me think of ‘Gueulemer’!

Moreover, even the physical attributes of Babet and Molutor are paralleled… echoing a disconcerting, though unfortunately unsurprising, ideology (whether on purpose or implicitly) wherein certain physical traits were believed to correspond with particular criminal behaviours.

“Ce Molutor était un homme petit, maigre, blême, anguleux, osseux, chétif, qui avait l'air malade et qui se portait à merveille; sa fourberie commençait là. Il souriait habituellement par précaution, et était poli à peu près avec tout le monde, même avec le mendiant auquel il refusait un liard. Il avait le regard d'une fouine. S'il rappelait Babet par certains côtés il faisait encore plus songer à Thénardier. Comme Thénardier, il s'était établi gargotier à Alger. / Souvent, il s'absentait plusieurs semaines de suite et l'on remarquait que c'était toujours du côté et à l'époque où nos soldats se battaient contre les Arabes. Il partait avec une petite carriole attelée d'un mauvais cheval, emportant quelques provisions qu'il vendait fort cher aux troupes.”

[Trans. “This Molutor was a short, skinny, pallid, angular, bony, puny man, who looked ill and was doing wonderfully well; his deceitfulness began there. He usually smiled as a precaution, and was polite to just about everyone, even the beggar to whom he refused a liard. He had the look of a weasel. If he reminded us of Babet in some ways, he reminded us even more of Thénardier. Like Thénardier, he had established himself as a gargotier in Algiers. / He was often away for several weeks at a time, always on the side and at the time when our soldiers were fighting the Arabs. He would leave with a small cart hitched to a bad horse, carrying a few provisions which he sold at a high price to the troops.”]

The line “Il souriait habituellement par précaution, et était poli à peu près avec tout le monde, même avec le mendiant auquel il refusait un liard” instantly brings to mind Boulatruelle’s introduction in Les Misérables:

“Ce Boulatruelle était un homme vu de travers par les gens de l'endroit, trop respectueux, trop humble, prompt à ôter son bonnet à tout le monde, tremblant et souriant devant les gendarmes, probablement affilié à des bandes, disait-on, suspect d'embuscade au coin des taillis à la nuit tombante.” — Book II.II.II

In this Inquirer column, we reach out to Troy McLawhorn of Evanescence to answer the essential questions in any guitar player’s life. We’re talking first songs learned, first guitars played, and what would McLawhorn do if he had a time machine?

Well, maybe we know the answer to that – he’d take that damned trench coat back to the store…

What was your first guitar?

“My mom and dad had guitars in the house, and though they didn’t play them that much, those were the first guitars I grew up playing on. The one I really started to learn how to play on was my mom's nylon-string classical guitar.

“I played that for years before they bought me my first guitar, which I picked out in a music store down the street from my house. It had a black Gibson Explorer-style body with a maple neck and was made by a company called Lotus.”

What was the first song you learned to play?

“House of the Rising Sun by the Animals. I figured out the chords and then gave a little concert to my mom and dad. I was around 12.”

Do you remember your first gig?

“My first gigs were playing at parties. In my hometown, older kids would have what they called keg parties, where they’d buy a couple of kegs of beer and have a band play. So my first gigs were in people’s backyards, playing at parties for older people who were getting drunk. One of the earliest bands I can remember being in at the time was Hellrazor. By default, our only payment was beer.”

Ever had an embarrassing moment on stage?

“I can't think of anything in particular that occurred in Evanescence, but I do remember one embarrassing moment back in the early ’90s when I was in Still Rain. Whenever I performed, I’d wear snakeskin boots and a leather trench coat that went all the way down to the ground.

“One night, I was playing a solo at the front of the stage and totally rocking out. When I was done, I took a step back, but because my trench coat was so long, I stepped on it and couldn’t stand up straight.

“Each time I tried stepping back, the trench coat got shorter and shorter, until I fell down on stage on my back into the drum kit. I rolled around for a second so I could get my shit together, and I finally got up.”

What’s your favorite piece of gear?

“One piece of gear that I regret letting go of was a Mesa Boogie Mark IV. It was a combo that had a beautiful tweed front. As for my favorite, it’s my 1985 Gibson Les Paul Custom that was given to me for my birthday by a good friend.

“It was used when I got it, but it’s a beautiful guitar that’s got this amazing piece of leather artwork on the front. I’ve never seen anything like it and it just sounds and plays great.”

Suppose the building is burning down; what one guitar from your collection would you save?

“My wife gave me a really great American Telecaster for Christmas a few years back. It’s one of my favorite guitars to play when I’m at home, and it means a lot to me because my wife gave it to me.”

When was the last time you practiced and what did you play?

“It would’ve been last night before the show. I warm up before every show, playing guitar for 20 or 30 minutes. I will usually go through some exercises, and maybe a couple of things in the show that I may have fucked up the night before.

“I don’t really have a routine, as I don’t actually sit down and practice all that much when on tour, as I concentrate on maintaining and getting ready for the show I’m about to play. But when I’m home, I practice a lot and like to learn new things.”

What aspect of the guitar would you like to improve?

“I’d love to have more of a knowledge of music theory. Growing up, I learned everything by ear. I just listened to records and tried to figure out what I could. I think it would be great to have more of an educated knowledge of theory and scales and all that stuff.”

What advice would you give to your younger self?

“I’d say invent a time machine so it can take you to now, where you could watch YouTube videos! I think it’s amazing that kids have YouTube now, because it would’ve been a whole different thing for me if I had all the knowledge that’s on YouTube."
