Run with neck-breaking furiosity 

A race run with the echoing noise of footsteps 

Hitting the pavement 

Concrete 

All in competition 

A race in which you will not take part in, 

None of the echoing footsteps belong to you, 

You are not a runner in this race, 

But the prize

You’re not afraid as the footsteps become louder, 

Closer, 

Closer to the finish line 

Closer to you 

Smoke was always been a caretaker, 

This is the end of days 

And you have always craved finality.

The Magician's Child: First Excerpt

Over the weekend, I posted the first line from my upcoming urban fantasy novel, The Magician's Child. Today, I'm going to post the first excerpt. This excerpt, which opens the novel, contains fairly major spoilers for my previous novel, Crossroad Blues. So, if you haven't read that, please read it before you read this excerpt. What do you do the Monday after a reanimated magician from the Middle Ages kicks your ass in a magic fight, kills the man you were hired to protect, and brands you with an unholy mark giving you one month before he returns to kill you too? You go to work. I finally understood all the Garfield comics. And so, I sat in my office, Hain Private Investigations, on this fucking miserable Monday morning. Storms battered Butcher’s Bend. Thick black clouds darkened the sky, extending the feeling of midnight by seven hours. Spring rains flooded the streets, but morning traffic refused to slow to safe levels. Horns honked from the street outside my office. The frequency and variety of honks suggested middle fingers were being raised and expletives were being uttered. Fuck Mondays. Here I was in my office—my new office that we just moved into—staring into my coffee mug, hoping the strong black Sumatran roast would provide answers. It didn’t. My standard coffee mug, the one with a lesbian pride flag and the words All This Coffee and I Still Can’t Function Straight, proved accurate in a dark, ironic way. I sipped. Fuck! My coffee had gone cold. How? I just got here. I heated the coffee in the microwave. Its digital clock told me it was five minutes before eight in the morning. Forty-five minutes. I snorted. Destiny hadn’t even arrived yet, but that would change in five minutes. Only three things were certain in life. Death, taxes, and Destiny being on time. This should be a happy time for us. I started this business in earnest five—almost six— years ago after dropping out of college to help a leprechaun whose illegal gambling ring ran him afoul of church officials, county governments, and the Duilearga, Ireland’s Veil Watchers whose stated mission was to keep the general populace from becoming aware that we share our world with supernatural beings. Nevada - Imogen Binnie ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 I knew that when our protagonist referenced a Kids in the Hall sketch and Kathy Acker, I was reading the narrative of someone I’d want to know. Maria is a trans woman in her late 20s, stuck in a dead end job and a relationship she’s not fully present in. Her mind is always elsewhere, trying to understand what’s missing, and she realizes she needs to learn who she is to figure out what she actually wants out of life. She takes off cross-country and meets young James who is likely but not certainly trans, and Maria sees a version of her younger self in him. She attempts to pay it forward by attempting to befriend him and impart what she’s learned so far, hoping that meeting a trans adult - even one who doesn’t have her shit together but is on her way to self-understanding - will help James figure himself out. Originally published in 2013, this cult classic novel and Lambda Literary Award for Transgender Fiction finalist is back in print and timely as ever. The novel is chatty, laugh-out-loud funny at points, but also heartbreaking and achingly honest about intricacies of a particular trans experience. The author and narrator both emphasize that this is just A trans experience, and that even if there were childhood abuse or the kind of stock early experiences we’ve been accustomed to hearing about (in mostly cis-authored narratives), trans authors don’t owe anyone the revelation of their trauma or their conformity to an “I ALWAYS KNEW” standard. There has to be diversity of experience allowed in all narratives if they are to be personal, and “Nevada” is nothing if not personal. You feel like you’re listening to a good friend who’s telling you a story. And there we go again... Another poem in English about a Greek Muse. This time, my verses sing about Erato, Muse of love and lyric poetry. She is my second preferred Muse (after Urania), because I love lyric poetry and I find a love poem much more amusing to read than, let's say, a long epic about how a warrior killed a dragon. I know, I know, ancient Greeks were very found of epic poetry – main source of their theology is epic poetry and they considered literate only ones could recite Iliad from memory, after all –, but that isn't my cup of tea.
