Still happy with something I thought of recently about parable of the sower which is the way Butler refused to valorize or allow the nostalgia around ancestors and ancestral knowledge into her narrative like. She made it a point to critique that reactionary sense of nostalgia for the past and ancestral spirit but made also very clear that there is instead a continuity with fertile ground in the present with which to shape future. It was so brilliant. We don’t need to uncover the past or embrace tradition or go back to old ways, there’s nothing to “go back” to. The novel is like the Benjaminian angel of history.
