Van der Linde Isaac - "CoS is actually a western" is such a concept ever since i saw somebody pointing that out i kept thinking about it
i rant about the redesign a bit:
so i went ahead and redesigned him to fit the rdr2 setting entirely, i cant give him a full on wolf arm, so i gave him burn scars on his face, that he hides all the time with a scarf or a bandana. hat in the back to replace the hoodie's shape. he is most comfortable using the rolling block rifle plus a knife. he would probably play a lot of five finger fillet.
plus, he gets his arm blown off at one point (not from finger fillet!! i swear), probably during the saint denis robbery, then dies during the guarma chapter, bc there is no way he would survive longer than that
also i cant have him choose sides at chapter 6 when i know he has blind loyalty

Could we get another Miphlink/Yiga Husbands double date?? I can't get over how much I love the way you write them! 😅
Thank you! I do in fact, love writing them all, including Mipha, who is JUST precious! (also yes to that one anon, you’re getting that smut of them you wanted, I’m getting there. 20 asks don’t get responded to overnight).
“Mipha, lil’ red, how’ve you been?!”
Kohga and Sooga were invited to come over for another double date. It was Mipha’s turn to pick what to do, and she had a rather interesting idea; learning how to make drinks. That was it. Kohga might have thought something like clothes making, maybe even searching for seashells or watching Link do his training. Not that Kohga was complaining, he loved an excuse to drink. Mipha accepted his offer for a hug, just delighted to see him.
“Kohga, Sooga! My dear friends! How are you both?”
Mipha parted from the hug, and offered Sooga her hand. She learned a long time ago that he didn’t exactly enjoy touching women, so she always offered her hand, in case he didn’t want to be touched. He refused it this time around, lightly bowing his head in apology.
“I’m quite well, Lady Mipha. Didn’t think I’d be carrying so much alcohol on my back though.”
Kohga scoffed, arms folded across his chest.
“What? You expect ME to carry it?”
“No Master Kogha, I just-”
“Anyhow, he’s just whiny because it’s an indoor date. I’m SO ready to teach you how to make some drinks! Where’s your little boyfriend anyway?”
“He’s inside, helping me set out the snacks.”
Sooga cocked his head to the side.
“Should...you have left HIM near the food?”
She thought about it for a moment, and realized her mistake.
“Er...pardon me for a moment.”
She dashed back inside, and Kohga chuckled. Sooga looked down at Kohga, and he could NOT stop smiling. Kohga noticed it, and scowled.
“What’s so funny?”
“You call ME such a lovesick sap. Yet here you are, fawning over their love. You’re such a hypocrite.”
“You know what, get your ass inside, I’m not listening to you.”
Sooga chuckled as Kohga nagged him into talking inside. Mipha had her own room in Zora’s domain, but quite frankly, it was like a mini mansion. A giant bedroom, a kitchen, and a living room, all to herself. No doubt it was built for her purely because everyone LOVED her, not that she needed such space. Kohga liked it here though, it was DAMN pretty in here, even though red was his personal favorite color. Kohga closed the door behind them as he dipped his head into the kitchen. Mipha was scolding Link (if you would call her gentle ‘please save food for the guests’ scolding), when she seemed to just now notice them, smiling as she brought over bowls of snacks to the living room.
“Sorry, Link ate most of the fried salmon skins. He really does enjoy my cooking.”
Sooga gave a shake of his head.
“It’s alright, he may have them. Kohga always makes me shower after I eat fish.”
“Because that smell just does NOT go away! How am I supposed to cop a feel when you smell like a doc?”
Link didn’t have any complaints, grabbing the bowl and helping himself to the rest of the salmon skins, nodding at them both in a hello. Mipha chuckled, slightly shaking her head.
“So long as that isn’t an issue for anyone, I would’ve gladly made some more for you, Sooga.”
“Kind, but not needed Mipha, thank you. If I may though, can I put this bag down? I’d hate to accidentally break any bottles.”
“Oh yes, please, on the coffee table!”
Sooga nodded, going to the living room and putting the rather big back of alcohol down onto the table. Mipha brought a little cart full of snacks (including sauteed nuts, honey candies, meaty rice balls, bread and butter, tabantha bakes, and banana chips), pushing it right by the table before she sat down next to Link on one of the couches. Kohga whistled at the rather cute array of treats she had.
“You didn’t have to make so much, Mipha! That’s sweet of you, but I wouldn’t want you putting so much work into this.”
“You agreed to teach us all about making drinks, providing you food is the least I can do! I also have some cake in the fridge, in case we need something else sweet.”
“Ugh, you’re precious Mipha, you really are. Blondie, don’t lose this one, she’s a good one.”
Link nodded in determination, and in a way, Mipha found it adorable. Kohga started to take out the bottles from the pack, setting it all down. Now Kohga wasn’t an alcoholic by any means, but he did like having variety in his drinks, hence why he had QUITE the stock. Mipha leaned over to the tray of snacks, helping herself to a meaty rice ball. Even as she was stuffing her little face, she was being so neat about it, just as the princess she was. Sooga meanwhile, sat up straight and to attention, as usual, not letting himself relax.
“So, what drinks ARE we making today, Master Kohga?”
“Let’s start with Mipha’s. Ladies first and all of that. I know which one you like, I NEVER forget a drink order. Don’t think you’ve ever seen me make drinks actually, so this should be fun.”
Kohga was always fast when it came to making drinks of food. It took him pretty much only a minute to cut fruit, salt the rim (of course he brought his own glasses), pour the ice, juice, vodka and stir. Sure it was a simple drink, but the speed was nonetheless impressive. He handed her the glass, and she gladly accepted it, handing the rest of her rice ball to Link. She took a sip, and although she tried to hide it, he could tell she enjoyed it, based on the way her lips curled into a little bit of a smile.
“I always thought it was so much more complicated than that, quite frankly.”
“Honestly, ANY drink is easy, once you know what you’re doing. Sooga, your turn big guy.”
“I don’t think we packed wine.”
“We didn’t, because that’s boring. That, and I like the fact that you watch my hands when I make these.”
Kohga nudged him with his shoulder, trying and failing not to grin. Sooga knew he was right, he LOVED watching him make things. Be it food, drinks, or...well, anything really. Kohga dug into the bag, pulling out a bunch of stuff. Sooga cocked his head to the side, curious.
“Wait, what are you making-”
“Shh, you’ll like it, trust me.”
In a tall glass, Kohga poured a container of some kind of syrup, adding some wild berries right after. He mashed them up, added a bit of some red liquid, and topped it off with ice cream, and a dash of soda. Sooga picked up the glass, inspecting the rather colorful drink.
“What...is this?”
“It’s a float, just try it. I even made it low alcohol, because you’re a pansy.”
Sooga gave it a sip, and slowly nodded, finding himself rather liking it.
“That’s quite nice, actually. Sweet, but bitter. How did you get the ice cream to stay-”
“Don’t ask questions, and just enjoy. Meanwhile, let’s get to refilling your glass Mipha, you’re all ice over there.”
Mipha looked down at her glass, lightly shaking her head.
“Oh no, I couldn’t possibly. One is more than enough.”
“Come on, you ain’t swimmin’ anywhere. Just one more?”
Mipha hesitated, but chuckled in defeat, handing him her glass.
“Alright. But just one more, then that’s it.”
“Atta girl!”
He chuckled, gladly setting her up with another drink. He had to at this point, who wouldn’t make a drink for their hostess? Especially with the way the snacks seemed to slowly be disappearing. Kohga rested his chin on his hand as he looked at Link.
“Now...what would YOU like, I wonder. Don’t think I’ve ever seen you drink, Goldilocks.”
Link gave a shake of his head, stuffing his face full of buttered bread. Kohga thought about it, before snapping his fingers.
“Wait, I got just the thing for you!”
Link had only just recently become of drinking age, so he wasn’t exactly a booze hound. Not a problem, Kohga catered to anyone and everyone, experience be damned. Kohga started to two different kinds of rum, some vodka, lemonade, and some black currant cordial. He mixed it all together, and slid it over to Link.
“Like it? It’s a ‘pink fairy’. Seems like something you’d like. Bit on the strong for some, but hey go big or big home. Now drink, drink!"
Link took a sip, lightly shaking his head after his sip. Kohga chuckled, leaning over and patting him on his pretty blonde head.
"You'll get used to it, blondie. Just-"
"Link, drink swap."
Mipha traded their drinks (with hers definitely having a lot less), and Link more or less accepted the swap. Mipha chuckled after taking a sip, leaning over to pinch Link's cheek.
"It's adorable, your first drink! You're just. So cute, Link."
Link's face erupted in blush, and he rubbed the back of his head, shy boy he was. Sooga pulled out his Sheikah slate as Kohga made his own drink (banana hammock, obviously), and started to play a song, playing it at a reasonable volume. Mipha seemed pleased as the music played, and she squealed, grabbing onto Link’s arm and flailing her legs wildly.
“Link! Oh I LOVE this music! You HAVE to dance with me! Please please pleeeeease!”
Drunk Mipha was a TOTAL dance bunny, and paired without the usual shyness, it was adorable, honestly. Link finished whatever was left of the drink, and nodded. Link was never one to tell his girl no, and it showed. They both got off of the couch, choosing to get up and dance together. The music wasn’t quick, wasn’t slow, but it enough to give a relaxed party vibe to the room, and Kohga couldn’t help but chuckle, nursing his drink as he watched his drunk little fishy get her groove on.
“You did that on purpose didn’t you?”
“I have no idea what you mean. I just like a little postmodern music. Nice tune.”
“Sap.”
“Enabler.”
They both had a chuckle at that, sitting back and watching these two idiots. Drunk Mipha had a little swagger to her, and Link knew fairly well how to dance. Enough so, he managed to dip her, just to kiss her on her forehead.
“That’s bullshit cute. Can’t say I blame her, boys got moves. He-”
He didn’t get to finish his sentence as Mipha started to tug at his arm, chuckling and swaying in place.
“Come on you two! Can’t just be me and Link up here! Dance with me Kohga!”
“Hey, if you wanna look bad, your funeral, fishy!”
Kohga tossed back the rest of the drink, before trading Link, and getting his chance to dance with Mipha. Link watched Mipha nearly giggle herself half to death, before he offered his hand to Sooga. He rolled his eyes, taking another sip of his drink.
“I suppose Kohga would just scold me if I refused. Alright.”
He accepted his hand, and joined him right next to Mipha and Kohga. It was half hearted, not very well done dancing, but that didn’t matter. All that mattered was that they were having fun, chuckles and giggles moving around the room, just as much as their feet were. Even Sooga had to admit; he was having fun. He swapped partners with Kohga, now dancing with a very enthusiastic Mipha. Thankfully, he wasn’t scared enough to NOT twirl the little princess in place, catching her before her dizziness nearly made her fall to the floor. She cared not at all, laughing it off rather loudly.
“Ha! You’re just like Link! Ever the sweetheart, Sooga.”
“I’d say he’s a lot more like Kohga, quite frankly.”
He chuckled, glancing over at Kohga and Link, who were having just WAY too much fun together. Mipha giggled, getting herself to stand back up.
“You love Kohga SO much, oh my GOD its so sweet. I cry thinking about you guys sometimes, it’s SO sweet. You guys NEED to get married. I wanna see it, so bad.”
“Kohga WOULD look good in a dress, I agree.”
“Thought that’d be you. You have the tits for it.”
“...pardon-”
“Oh switch time!”
Their partners swapped, and suddenly Kohga was in his arms. Not that he had any complaints. Kohga laughed as he held onto Sooga, still keeping in tune to the song.
“Good call on the swap, any longer and I might’ve stolen her mans. I’m telling you, he’s into me.”
“Not anymore than me, Master Kohga.”
“Is that a fact?”
“Absolutely. I can prove it too.”
Sooga leaned down, parted their masks a bit, and pressed his lips against Kohga’s. It was a sweet, tender moment between them, and even though it wasn’t an outdoorsy date, Sooga wouldn’t trade it for anything.
“Link!-”
They both turned to watch Link trip over himself, sending himself falling on top of Mipha, who fell backwards onto the couch. They both shared a laugh, and it was tender, watching Mipha hold onto Link’s face as she did.
“Oh...you’re a big, silly man, Link. I love you. You and your soft face, and your big elephant ears.”
They both snorted at that, forehead pressed together. Sooga looked down at Kohga, who was clearly amused at them both.
“Kohga?”
“Hmm?”
“Did you...think it would end up like this?”
“Well yeah, they’re nuts for each other-”
“No. I mean...everything. Us being together, the world being as perfect as it is now. Did you see that coming?”
“...no. But you know, I’m really glad things ended up how they did. All of it.”
Kohga put his hand into Sooga’s, chuckling. There was a sweet, blissful moment of tenderness between them, before Sooga spoke again.
“You want to grab everything in the fridge and leave them be?”
“Absolutely, been thinking about the cake this whole time.”

Happy birthday to you Happy birthday to you Happy birthday Happy birthday to you Happy birthday to you Happy birthday
Everybody sing the Stevie Wonder rendtion of “ Happy Birthday” to Amaya. Amaya was soaking up the attention and look towards her parents. Her parents may thought she didn’t notice the little things, she did. She smile not only it was her birthday, but she has her parents still together.
“ Amaya, blow out the candles baby!” Tre shouted to his youngest daughter with some tears coming up seeing his baby turn six years old. As Amaya blew out the candles, Cierra looked up at her husband.
Tre couldn’t hold the tears in.
Cierra wipe off a tear off his face. As she finish wiping the tear off his face, Tre caught Cierra hand and kept it on his face. He looked at her and smile. Cierra smiled back.
As the couple was having a silent moment, Jakob was up to no good. As Amaya finish blowing out the candles. Jakob came up with a idea.
A DUMB IDEA TO BE EXACT.
Jakob saw his little sister soak up all the attention. Amaya might be his favorite sister, but she was on his list. Amaya “accidentally” slip up and told Jakob’s girlfriend that constipate. Even though Jakob was, he was shock that his favorite sister was going to do him like that.
So Jakob, whom was standing right behind Amaya, and standing by Mia finally saw the time was right.
As he seem like slow motion, Jakob slam Amaya face in the cake. It seem like everything stood frozen.
Amaya looked back with this twitch in her eye, and grab a piece of the cake and threw it at Jakob. Jakob yelled out:
“ Food Fight!”
With thirty 5/6 years old, they love themselves some food fight. With Jakob running away from Mia and Amaya, whom was running after him with cake in their hand.
Cierra and Tre finally felt out of their lovely eye gazing when a piece of cake hit Cierra right in her face. When Tre looked around, it was a bunch of kids running around with cake and other food in their hand. Parents were hiding and some was even joining.
Marcus took off his shoe warning kids if he get hit by some cake, then they getting their ass whoop.
Tre turn back to his wife, who was still in shock, and start laughing. As if he didn’t learn that laughing at his wife will get him hurt. She looked on the ground, and saw that some Mac-N-Cheese was on the ground. Cierra went down and pick it up off the grass and chuck it at Tre.
With that, Tre shut his mouth and looked at his wife. Cierra met his eyes and knew it was time for her to run.
“ Cierra, you better run because when I get my hands on you, those lemon cookies are mines!” Tre ran after her getting a plate of mash potatoes.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As the end of the party came to an end at 5:00, the family was cleaning up the food fight that ruin the whole backyard. As Tre and Cierra was cleaning one section of the yard, the kids gather up on the other side of the yard.
“ If your dumb self didn’t start this, the backyard wouldn’t be ruin!” Mia yelled at Jakob while trying to be quiet as possible. Mia looked at her Apple watch and realize that the caters would be here in a moment.
“ OMG we got to get mommy and daddy upstairs because the cater is going be here at any moment!” Mia rushed into the house to get Angelo and Marcus to get them two upstairs.
Mia came back outside with them following right behind her. She gesture for Amaya and Jakob to get inside to put on their outfits for the surprise.
On the other side of the backyard, Marcus and Angelo was busy trying the two to go to their respectfully places where Mama T and Lisa to set up their outfits for the surprise.
“ Cierra we need to check on the test.” Angelo whispered in Cierra’s ear. Cierra turn around and ran to her office with Angelo. This test could change things in the Rhode’s household.
As Marcus saw Angelo get Cierra to go, he stated silently to Tre, “ Tre you remeber that phone call you had this morning, I think they left a message on the land line.” Tre looked at Marcus and ran upstairs to his room, which was the room that had a landline, to hear the voicemail. This voice mail could change things in the Rhode’s household.
Both of these things can.
------------------------------------------------------------------
“ People,move it!” Mia yelled at her family that was setting up the backyard for the surprise dinner. Mia looked over at her siblings which they were bickering with each other.
“ Both of y’all James Brown lookalikes! Y’all better not ruin my plan or else!” Mia shouted  at them and while looking into both of their eyes.
“ Okay, Mrs.Meanie, that is why you actually looked like James Brown yesterday!” Amaya retorted back with a head roll.
“ Now this is why she is  my favorite sister!” Jackob said while looking at Mia, whom was not very interested in the argument.
“ Okay both of y’all get change into your outfit and hurry up.” Mia said while turning around and saw Marcus about putting the wrong floral arrangement on the table. Grandpa Marcus what the heck are you doing!” Mia shouted while quickly running over to him.
----------------------------------------------
As Cierra walked out of her office with the dress that was laying on her desk.
Tumblr media
Cierra saw her husband walking down the stairs in the amazing black suit with his shirt open a little.
Tumblr media
“ Now Trevante Rhodes don’t make me take you down on this staircases.” Cierra whispered seductively to her husband as he walking towards her. Trevante smirk and looked at his wife.
“ Now turn around for me Mrs.Rhodes.” Tre smirked as he saw his wife go slowly around. As she was about to turn back to him, Trevante grabbed her towards him. They both start making out with each other and feeling all up on each other. Tre start going down Cierra neck as he heard a voice.
“ Now I am getting tired of seeing y’all getting freaky in this house.” Angelo stated while looking at the couple. They both look quickly at each other only to see Angelo.
Nope.
Standing right beside him was Marcus and Jakob with a disgusting look on there faces. Cierra finally notice that the everybody was dressed up.
“ Why are y’all dress up?” Ciera question to the three of them. The look on their faces told Cierra and Tre that they were hiding something.
“ Well you know that we like to look good! What’s wrong with that.” Jakob answer while not looking at his mom. Jakob don’t look at his parents when he is lying and they know that.
“ You are lying, did Tre even gift me this dress?” Cierra question the three stooges in front of her.  Tre spoke up: “ No baby I didn’t, but Marcus said that you gift me this outfit.” Tre looked at Marcus, who turn his whole head the other way.
“ Well I can tell that everybody is hiding something from us and I want to know now.” Cierra stated with much firmness while looking at the three people in front of her. Marcus looked down at his watch reading, 8:00, which this was the time that Mia wanted her parents to go out for the suprise.
“ Well, we are hiding something, it is in the backyard.” Marcus looked at the couple in front them. Cierra and Tre head to the backyard with the three hiding behind them.
When Cierra and Tre walk out to their backyard, Cierra started to tear up.

With Reunited playing in the backyard, the couple looked in awe at the transformation of their backyard.
Tumblr media
The backyard that was full of food was transform to a romantic canopy dinner for two. With the bamboo trees in the background and the candles all over the backyard. Tre looked at his wife, who had tears coming down her eyes, it made him smile. Cierra looked at her husband and ask, “ Did you plan this?” saying with much shock on her face.
“ No we did!” Amaya shhouted behind them. The couple looked back and saw their three kids in their waitress outfits.
Tumblr media
“ Well my lady and sir, it is time for you to go eat and I will show you to your table.” Mia stated to her parents with dinner menus in her hand. Walking hand and hand, Cierra and Tre followed the Mia.
When getting to the table, Tre got Cierra’s chair and waited for her to sit before he went to his chair before to do the same.
“ What would your drinks be sir and ma’am.” Mia said while smiling at her parents and seeing that they loved it. They looked at the print menu that Mia did this morning.
“ Well for me and my lady I think we will take the red wine.” Tre said while looking at Mia. Mia smiled and turn to walk back in the house.
“ Wow, our kids are amazing.” Cierra  said stil looking around at the backyard and how the kids transform it.
“ They are truly amazing. Happy anniversary baby girl!” Tre said reached across the table and held Cierra’s hand. Cierra turn back over to looked at her husband. With a smile, she replied “ Happy anniversary baby!” while squeezing his hand.
“ This past couple of months been the hardest thing. Baby I am truly sorry for doing anything that ever hurt you. I was so depress that I forgot that I had my wife that was hurting too.” Tre quietly finishing the statement at the end with tears coming down. Cierra looked at her husband and the tears came down faster.
“ Baby I said things too, and I am sorry for that. I love you so much Trevante Nemour Rhodes. I don’t know what I would do without you. You gave me all my children, my first love, and my best friend baby. I know the lost of the baby really hurt us both,” Cierra stated to her husband taking a pause, “ Well, I have something to tell you. I haven’t been feeling well for the last couple of days and I took a test. 15 to be exact.” Cierra emphasized the last part of her statement.
With a smile, Cierra looked at Tre and announce “ All 15 of them were postive!”
Tre smiled turn into a big cheshire cat smile. He got up out of his seat and ran over to his wife and kiss her. He held on to her face, with their noses touching each other, they were smiling.
“ Well, I hope it is a boy because I can’t deal girls no more dad! Cause these two right here are a enough for me.” Jakob said out loud while his sisters and him was looking at their parents. Cierra and Tre looked at their kids, which the girls was punching him because he ruin the moment.
Those were their kids alright.
“ Daddy you forgot the gift you suppose to give mommy!” Amaya shouted giving her dad the ringbox.
“ You remeber when I first propose to you and I gave you my grandmother’s ring. With that, I said to you when we get stable enough, I would buy you something else.” Tre said while givng Cierra the ring box.
Cierra open it up, and Tre truly outdid himself.
Tumblr media
“ Trevante Rhodes, this thing is huge!” Cierra said bewildered with Tre putting the ring on her finger.
“ Well your daughters, momma, and Angelo said that was the one.” Tre stated recounting ring shopping this past week. Cierra looked at Tre and smile at him. She then looked a the kids and saw that they wanted to be in the conversation too.
“ My little babies, bring up a chair!” Cierra shouted looking at the kids. Amaya sat down in Tre’s lap, who went back to his seat, while Mia and Jakob got a chair. The family started to talk and laugh like they use to before everything happen.
They were in their own world.
The other family memebers went outside and realize that the family was having their time together. They put up the food, and went to their respectful rooms. The Rhode’s family went back to being them.
“ I do have an announcement though!” Tre exclaimed with a sleeping Amaya  on his lap.
“ Well, your daddy and husband is about to be the a superhero! I am the next Green Lantern!” Tre stated with much excitement coming from his family. Tre looked at his wife and just smiled.
“ It is time for you kids to go to bed too!” Tre said while getting up with Amaya still knock out. The twins latch onto  the their mom arms while Tre walked Amaya to their room. As he layed down Amaya, he kissed her on the cheek and left her room.
Tre went inside their master bedroom, looking at his wife that was taking off her makeup with a wipe by her bedside. Tre came beside and look directly at her and smile once again.
“ Baby all of this smiling is getting a little creepy.” Cierra insisted while laughing at her husband. “ Why can’t I look at my beautiful, hot, sexy wife that is looking absolutely stunning that dress.” Tre stated back while taking off his shoes. Cierra just laughed while walking into their joint closet.
“ Tre on serious note though, I am truly proud of us! We got stuck in the movement of us and things happen. We didn’t know how to solve them, but we learn alot!” Cierra said while changing and walking out in her pajamas pants and sports bra.
Cierra got on her side of the bed and got under the covers with Tre walking out of the bathroom.
“ I know baby! I have learn that I need to take care you like you take care of our family. You learn that I just need  you to be my best friend. However, both us learn that we need to just listen!”  Tre stated coming out of the closet with his sweatpants on.
Cierra wasn’t looking at her husband’s face no more, but something that swinging. Tre looked at his wife and knew what she was looking at. As he got in the bed, Tre said “ I think somebody wants to give The Green Lantern some lemon cookie.”
As he got in the bed, Cierra jump on top of him.
“ Well Mr. Green Lantern I think tonight you need to just listen to me!”

Kismet (Chapter 14): A BTS Jin imagines fanfic
Tumblr media
First ever fanfic. Contains fluff and smut. Please read sequentially as it is a long story arc. Please provide feedback! My IG is btskismet.
It was their last day before they would go back home. She felt a massive pit in her stomach, just thinking that she would be flying back. His flight was earlier than hers and he felt bad that he would leave ahead of her.
Seokjin hugged her from behind in bed. He was quiet just as she was and it seemed like they were thinking of the same thing.
"Jagiya, we inside whole day. Ok?", he said in English. She nodded yes as a response. "Dinner with JHope?", she asked and he said later.
He handed her an earpiece and as soon as it turned on, he said, "I want to spend this whole day with you all to myself, ok?", Seokjin said. She looked back and said alright and received a long kiss as a reply.
They spent the whole day as if they were newlyweds on their honeymoon. They had sex several times and they would stop only to rest and recharge, if not to eat. He explored every inch of her body and they couldn't keep their hands off of each other. They wore their bath robes the whole time. At any point he would get aroused, Seokjin with pounce on her again so it didn't make sense to dress up.
He was tempted to cancel on JHope and Taehyung for dinner and karaoke but he kept saying that he wanted to hear her sing.
They also tried to watch a movie in Netflix which ended as a failure. As soon as the characters started kissing, they would reach out for each other, kiss and end up doing it again.
She discovered that he likes his neck being massaged as a means to get him turned on. He wanted her on top of him more as he enjoys looking up to watch her face when she came.
What she thought as the number of times that would make Seokjin totally spent was not even close to the actual number of times needed so he would become spent. He was hungry as he was virile and he really milked her dry. At the end of each time though, she felt closer to him as she now knew his breath, his scent, his taste, his touch, his everything.
~~~~~
"So, what was your nightmare about? Do you remember?", she asked him while they ate some pasta and steak brought to the room.
"It was the same dream I had but there were a few things that were new. At one point, you and I were cooking together. Another thing is there was something I was reading and it got me so sad and angry. I can't remember what.."
"Is that why you shouted no in your sleep?”, she asked.
"I think so.", he said. "It's weird. Why are we dreaming the same thing?"
"I know.", she contemplated as well. "Do you think we've met before?"
Seokjin looked at her, trying to consider the prospect. "I don't know. Maybe? Do you even believe in things like that?"
"No. But it's just so strange.", she replied.
Seokjin drank some soda. "Well, no use thinking about it now. We'll just stress ourselves figuring it out."
She nodded. Seokjin finished his food and so did she. As she was about to clear the table, Seokjin pulled her away. "Come on, we should have a warm bath now because I'm not done with you yet." She smiled and allowed him to lead her to the bathroom.
They met at a restaurant called Yakiniku Sanshirou which was not far from the hotel. Seokjin and her decided to walk since it was just 12 minutes away and the weather, though cold, was nice in the evening. They decided to meet JHope and Taehyung there around 9pm.
They leisurely walked to the place as they were enjoying the quiet streets with several people walking. The location of the restaurant wasn’t in the touristy side of Otaru so there would be less people to worry about. Just the same, they reserved the booth at the back so it would be secluded.
Seokjin was looking at her as they were walking. “What?”, she asked. He smiled and then touched the tip of her nose. “Your nose is a little red... and cold!”, he said laughing.
She put her hand to her nose, concerned about how it looked. “Is it that bad?”, she said and felt conscious. He swayed his head. “No. It matches your cheeks since you’re pretty flushed.”
She had an expression of panic and started to look for her mirror in her bag. Seokjin laughed and stopped her by grabbing her hands. “Don’t do anything. I’m to blame that’s why you look like that.” He looked at her knowingly and winked.
“Yes, you’re the culprit. The many things you did to me... tsk, tsk...”, she said.
Frankly, she felt like her legs were about to fall off. She hasn’t had sex that much and that long EVER. It made her giggle inside just thinking about it.
The restaurant comprised of two floors and it looked like two container vans on top of each other. It had a simple facade with a glass door in front and lamps pointed at the restaurant name in Japanese. It wasn’t a flashy place but at 10 steps away, the scent of grilled meat wafted about. Seokjin quickened his pace when he smelled it and was eager to go in.
They were the first ones to get there. The first floor was filled with people but the second floor was hardly filled. The tables upstairs were more for smaller groups and the first floor catered to bigger groups.
They checked the menu right away and Seokjin was thrilled that though it was a yakiniku, there was more Korean fare than Japanese.
Seokjin started ordering everything Korean in the menu as well as pork and beef to be grilled. “Have you tried yukgaejang before?”, he asked her. She swayed her head. “It’s beef and vegetable soup. Really good!”, he said and told the waiter they want one. “Ah! And Soju and Otaru beer! Kudasai? Arigatou!”
She looked at the English version of the menu and said: “Can we get some Stone Bowl Bibimbap? I love those.”, she asked.
Seokjin smiled and ordered one. “Well, look at you! And I thought the only Korean food you eat is grilled meat and japchae...”
“Ha! I’m not as uncultured as you think. I appreciate Korean food as well, you know. I just can’t eat it if it is too hot.”, she interjected.
“Name the Korean food you eat then!”, he challenged her.
She counted and focused on remembering the names: “Bibimbap, japchae, bulgogi, kimchi... uh... samgyupsal, kim... pajeon, mandu, gimbap...”
As she was providing her list, JHope and Tae arrived. She didn’t notice them and Seokjin didn’t make her feel that they were behind her, listening to her list.
“... Tteokboki, bingsu... and...”, she trailed off and covered her face with her hands, trying to recall the names.
“Ah! Lotte Pepero sticks and Calbee Honey Butter Chips!”, she exclaimed.
She heard loud clapping behind her which made her jump and Seokjin was laughing and clapping at her reaction. She saw JHope and Taehyung clapping. JHope was saying wow amazing while Taehyung was clapping softly though he had a calm expression.
Seokjin stood up and hugged both of them and then sat beside her. JHope and Taehyung sat on the other side.
“You know lots Korean food, ah?”, JHope said in English. She smiled sweetly at him. “Yes, I like Korean food.”
JHope, Taehyung and Seokjin started talking in Korean and she understood from Seokjin’s translation that they wanted to know the food they ordered.
JHope asked for the earpiece from Seokjin and started talking to her. “So, looks like we will go to karaoke tonight! I heard from Jin hyung that you sing.”
“Not that much. I’m not as good as you guys.”, she said shyly.
“Ah, I am interested to hear this song Jin hyung messaged me about.”, he pulled out his phone to check the message. “Fly me to the moon?”
She smiled. “If they have it there, I can sing it. It’s a classic song so I’m not sure if they will have it there.”
“Well, let’s see! I want to hear your voice. Maybe you can help us in the next album!”, JHope chided. She said he was sweet and asked him questions about his Hope World album.
In the corner of her eye, she observed Seokjin speaking with Taehyung in a calm but somewhat formal manner. Taehyung was acting more cordially to him. She also noticed that he would steal glances to look at her talking to JHope and most especially in instances when Seokjin gave her a piece of meat or vegetable he grilled. He even cut up some pieces just for her to eat. Taehyung didn’t look annoyed or upset but more of taking stock of what he was observing.
~~~~~
Mash Karaoke was one of only four Karaoke joints in Otaru. It was on the third floor of a nondescript building, 15 minutes away by foot from the restaurant. They got to go there right away after their manager and staff dropped them off. They told the guys they would come back for JHope and Taehyung around 2am or earlier if they wanted to.
JHope said that he wanted to be the one to choose the room as he wanted it to be as spacious as possible. He had a tendency to dance if the songs they sing are upbeat and fun. Seokjin was pleased about JHope’s enthusiasm. Taehyung also was thrilled and looked at the selection of songs right away.
They started to sing some of the Korean songs that were on the list. As the beer and soju came, they started singing song after song. She wasn’t familiar with all the songs they sang but there was one that she recognized.
Seokjin started singing the song he sang with JK in one Bangtan Bomb episode. “I know this song!”, she said to JHope. “This is Wildflower by Park Hyo Shin, right?”
“Yes! Woowwww, you know it! Do you know a lot of Korean songs?”, JHope asked.
“Just a few that’s not from you guys. Most of the Korean songs I know are from your group haha.”
JHope then got her attention and pointed at Seokjin, who was looking at her as he was singing the chorus. She felt a little shy that he was paying attention to her as he sang. She knew the song was about love lost that couldn’t be forgotten. It made her feel sad and she knew that he chose this for the reason that they would be parting soon. She was really close to crying but he belted out the refrain and she was blown away. Ohmigod, he didn’t sound like this in the video, she thought. He really has improved in his singing.
They all clapped for him when he ended his song. She smiled and said it was beautiful. He sat beside her and kissed her cheek slowly. “Saranghae.”, he whispered which made her blush.
Taehyung then stood up and went close to the screen to sing his song. She wasn’t sure what song it was but it sounded very lonely. She looked at Seokjin, who was looking through the songbook for another song to sing.
After he sang, she clapped and gave him a standing ovation. She surprised JHope and Seokjin but most especially Taehyung. “JHope, can you please let him know that it was beautiful and I’ve never heard this song until today but the  song matches his voice perfectly that he should’ve sang it originally?” JHope translated for her and Taehyung had a big smile after that. He said thanks and blushed slightly.
She noticed that the next song was also Taehyung’s choice: Someone Like You by Adele. She already had a chance to make Taehyung smile - she was thinking she could do more to make him comfortable with her.
“Jagiya, you haven’t sung anything!”, Seokjin exclaimed. She was surprised that he got the earpiece from JHope and passed the song book to her.
“I know. Would you mind passing the earpiece to Taehyung please? I want to ask him something.”
Seokjin said ok but was a little curious as to what she meant. He took it off and explained it to Taehyung who looked at her as he wore the earpiece. “Hi. Yes?”, he asked.
She explained what she wanted and he was listening intently. He nodded and said sure. JHope and Seokjin were wondering what they were talking about but as soon as Taehyung pressed play for the next song, he handed one microphone to her. Seokjin and JHope clapped excitedly when they realized they were going to do a duet.
Taehyung started the first verse while she took the second one. She adjusted to the lower key best as possible and even had a chance to blend with Taehyung in several verses.
After the song, Taehyung gave her a high five since they did quite well together. JHope stood up to give them hugs and Seokjin shook Taehyung’s hand and hugged him.
“Jagiya! You have a great voice. I’m sooo proud!”, Seokjin beamed. “Did I also do a good job in connecting with Taehyung?”, she whispered to him. Seokjin gave her two thumbs up. “Thanks for doing that. I think he’s more relaxed now and more open to you.”
They enjoyed more songs together. They sang several songs together from Psy, Girls Generation, Drake, some of their own songs and even Despacito (which Seokjin danced to). JHope also sang a few upbeat songs and when they were getting tipsy, they had a screaming match while singing So Chan Whee’s Tears. She found it so funny that they were all trying to sing/scream the chorus and they danced like girls.
As they started to get more drunk, she decided it was time for her to sing more. She asked the guys if she could sing her usual lineup of songs. “Since you three have had your own mini concert already and are super drunk...”, she expressed jokingly.
“Yeah, come on!!!”, JHope shouted, red-faced and smiling. Taehyung, who looked a little sleepy, raised his glass of soju to her and mouthed the words go, go, go. Seokjin sat there, massaging her back loudly said, “Show them how it’s done, Jagiya!”
She sang a few songs in succession: Broken-Hearted Girl by Beyonce, Million Reasons by Lady Gaga and Katamoi by Aimer (which JHope recorded since he recognized it as a song RM shared via twitter).
Seokjin was impressed in her singing and kept hugging her after each song she sang. He also kept looking for Fly Me To The Moon but they didn’t have it which made him pout.
She cleared her throat and said, “First of all, I want to say I am very honored to have half of the famous BTS group here to listen to me sing tonight...”, she said, as they were hooting and Seokjin translating in the background.
“My last song for tonight is a Japanese love song that I have not ever sang in public. But I will now and I am dedicating it to my jagiya, Kim Seokjin...”
She sang Final Distance by Utada Hikaru. Seokjin watched her with a smile as she sang it. JHope showed him his phone with the lyrics of the song in Korean. As he was reading it, Seokjin’s expression changed into sadness and quietly watched her sing the song with as much emotion as she could pour into it.

“I’ll Stand By You” Part 1
Summary: Y/N decoded sensitive algorithms for the Avengers. Little did she know her degenerate boyfriend, Raymond was an operative for Hydra, interested in resurrecting the Winter Soldier. In the midst of chaos, an unlikely bond forms.
Pairings: Bucky Barnes x Plus size! Reader
OFC: Caspian McKnigh (jerk ex-boyfriend/HYDRA operative) Nat, Wanda, Sam, Steve, Tony, Thor, Vision, Bruce
Word Count: 1,483
Warnings: Butthead ex-boyfriend, kissing, deceit
A/N: This is my (extremely late) submission to @dangerousvikings and @lisinfleur.# M and N Writing Challenge!Thank you for being patient.
My prompt: “Meeting you was a once in a lifetime change. I couldn’t have been luckier.”
There’s a saying, “Everybody needs somebody to love.” James Buchanan Barnes longed for that special someone. Whenever he  looked in the mirror, he saw the monster HYDRA turned him into. Long gone was the suave and debonair 40’s lady’s man. So, he wrapped his heart in a cocoon, vowing to never let anyone in.
That is until Y/N Y/L/N, arrived at the complex. Her aura radiated hues of purple, blue,  yellow, and pink. Watching from afar, Bucky swore he heard the sweet melody of singing birds when she laughed. Her smile was envied by the sun.
Although Y/N wasn’t a field operative, her knowledge of algorithms aided the Avengers in eradicating 3 hidden bases.
Enter Caspian McKnight. Her so called boyfriend aka “God’s gift to women.” NO ONE at the compound hates him. Y/N was a thicc woman. Albeit biased, Bucky loved every plump inch of her curvaceous frame.
Together for 1 ½ years, Caspian always found a way to make a disparaging comment to her. “You know what Y/N? I could’ve had any woman out there. Show some gratitude!”
Bucky didn’t miss Caspian’s comments. It pissed him off to the point he broke the arm of a chair. Steve knew the feelings his childhood friend had for Y/N.  The smile no longer reached her shimmering seafoam green eyes. She’d lower her head, walking away.
Sitting at her desk engrossed in a USB flash drive, Caspian flung the door open. So hard it hit the wall, startling Y/N.
“What the hell Caspian? You scared the shit out of me?”
Stalking up to her desk, Caspian interrogated Y/N. “You didn’t come home last night. Why is that?”
Y/N pushed her chair from the desk, returning the evil look at Caspian. “I’m working on a project that requires my immediate attention. I’m surprised you even noticed. Must’ve been a slow night for you?”
“Well aren’t you the sassy one. I’ve seen the way Dark Shadows stares at you. Is it him?” Caspian picks his teeth with a toothpick.
Scrunching her eyebrows, Y/N stared at him confused. “Who in the hell is Dark Shadows?”
“Oh don’t play dumb with me. The Winter whatever he is. You think he doesn’t watch you like a hawk?” Caspian closed the distance between them.
Y/N squared her shoulders. “Really? I didn’t notice, but guess what? It feels damn good to have a man look at me like I mean something. You NEVER miss a chance to put me down. As a matter of fact, everyone here hates you, including me!!!!
Bucky took a chance and visited Y/N. Approaching the door, he heard shouting. “What the fucks going on? Are ya okay, doll?”
Rolling his beady eyes, Caspian chuckled. “Doll? Are you kidding? I knew you had something going on with him.”
Bucky strolled over to him. “No, we don’t but if you’re not careful, I’ll snap your neck like a twig.
If I see one tear roll down her cheek, you’re a dead man. Get the hell ‘outta here….NOW!!!
Y/N added. “You do realize the apartment is in my name, right? Therefore, I’ll call the landlord, tell him I’m moving and guess who’s stuck paying all of the bills? That’s right, jackass, you! Tony Stark asked me if I wanted to move in. So, guess I’ve got some packing to do!!! Bucky, will you and Steve help me?”
Laying his arm on her shoulder, Bucky smirked. “Ya got it. Lemme know so I can tell Stevie.”
“No time like the present!” Y/N felt happier and lighter.
Caspian tucked his tail between his legs, stomping from her office. “You’re gonna regret this!”
Hands on her hips, Y/N glared at him. “The only regret I have is not doing this sooner.”
Calling Tony, Y/N wanted to know if his offer was still on the table. “Yes, science girl. When would you like to move?”
Smiling at Bucky. “Is now too early?”
“Nope. I’ll get the movers ASAP. They’ll pack for you. The staff will get a suite ready.”
“Thank you so much. Bucky and Steve are going with me to get my heirlooms. See you later.”
“If m’overstepping lemme know. Ain’t nobody got any business making ya feel like crap. Gosh, you’re one of the prettiest dames I ever laid eyes on. Not t’mention how intelligent y’are. Any man would be lucky to have y’as his best girl.” Bucky rubbed the back of his neck.
Y/N giggled with silly loveliness,  leaning over kissing Bucky on his cheek.
“C’mon, let’s get’cha moved in. M’excited. Maybe sometimes, if ya wanna, we can get a coffee.”
“James Buchanan Barnes, I’d love that.”
Bucky did a double take. “What?? Are ya serious? Don’t go playin’ with me.”
The gleam returned to her eyes, Y/N winked. “Who’s playing?”
With pep in his step, Bucky and Steve helped Y/N moved and get settled.
Watching from afar, Caspian pulled a burner cell phone from his pocket, pressing #2.
“Phase one is underway.”
“Perfect. What’s next?”
“Lay low. We don’t want either of them to become suspicious!”
“Good job, Agent! Hail Hydra!”
“Hail Hydra!
Nat and Wanda loved helping Y/N set up her suite. Another female meant a copious amount wine and gossip.
Nat laughed. “Spill it, Y/N. What’s going on with you and Barnes?”
Wanda sipped her wine giggling. “Let’s hear all about it.”
Y/N flopped on her bed. “Alright. If you must know, we’ve had coffee, lunch and dinner. Not in that order. He’s really sweet and easy to talk to.”
“We are talking about James Buchanan Barnes, right?”
“Nattie, stop it!” Wanda hit her arm. “Y/N and Barnes are cute together.”
“Thank you Wanda. I heard Tony is having dinner catered tonight?”
Nat and Wanda nodded. “He’s having a ‘Welcome to the Compound’ dinner in your honor.”
Y/N couldn’t believe her ears. “Really?? Wow, that’s so sweet.”
In the kitchen, caterers scurried, setting up a grand feast. Roast beef topped with pearl onions, baby carrots, red potatoes and basil, t-bone steaks, baked and mashed potatoes, salad bar, yeast rolls, and succulent desserts.
Steve, Tony, Sam, Bruce, Thor and Bucky were milling about as the women rounded the corner laughing.
Mr. Sarcastic Stark couldn’t let the moment pass. “Well, if it isn’t ‘The Giggly 3.’ Oh hell, they’ve been drinking.”
Thor boomed. “Welcome to the team, fair maiden Y/N.” He kissed her hand. Bucky was fuming!
“Thank you Thor. I’m happy to be here. Hi Buckaroo.”
“Hey doll. What’cha been up to?”
Y/N held him around the waist. “I’ve been hanging out with Wanda and Nat, unpacking, drinking wine and laughing uncontrollably. It feel so good, Buck. I’m free.” She didn’t realize tears rolled down her cheeks.
Steve handed her a tissue. “Are you alright Y/N?”
Running from the room, Y/N stopped in the hallway, sobbing.
Bucky followed. “Hey, sweetheart. What’s wrong? C’mere.”
He held her to his chest. “I’m so sorry. I realized Caspian is no longer in my life. No more ugly remarks. You make me feel like a woman. Thank you.”
“Ya need to know. Meeting you was a once in a lifetime chance. I couldn’t be luckier.”
When their lips met, time stood still. The world stopped spinning on its axis. Coming up for air, Y/N moaned. “Wow, that was….wow!”
Tony looked around the corner. “If you two are finished sucking face, dinner is served.”
Holding hands, Bucky and Y/N made their way to the table.
Y/N apologized. “I’m so sorry for earlier. Caspian wasn’t the nicest man. He’d make snide comments, making me feel ‘less than.’ Now, I’m my own person.”
Sam understood. “Hey miss lady, it’s alright. We all have shit in our lives that ain’t pretty. You’re home and loved”
By the end of the night, Y/N forgot the past and relished in a bright future.
On the other side of town, Caspian stewed. He plotted against Y/N. Not only would he attempt to steal the USB flash drives, but make Bucky suffer by taking away his WOMAN!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The funeral was exhausting, to say the least.
Being Liam's only surviving relative, Killian had a lot of the work to do. That didn't mean that Emma didn't pinch in where she could, but she was focusing more on Henry. That didn't stop her from ordering the catering ("Why do we need to feed people, Emma, it makes no sense. Can't they just say they're sorry and leave us alone?"), to making sure that Killian and Henry had proper attire, to even checking over that both Liam and Elsa's plots were ready for them. That's not even including the gravestones, which Killian and Emma agreed should say their names, their lifespan, and  "Beloved mother, father, and friends" under their names.
But what Killian hated the most was the entertaining. It made no sense to him, something he kept commenting to Emma, who he was sure stopped listening to him. He just wanted to drink his rum and sit in misery for five minutes without all these people walking around Liam's house, commenting on how sorry they were. Oh, and Henry? How was the poor lad doing?
That made Killian want to scream all the more. Henry was fourteen months old, he had no bloody idea what in hell was going on right now. Or maybe he did, if his screaming at three o'clock in the morning was any indication.
"Killian," he heard someone say behind him. He would have groaned because he just found a nice quiet spot that had no mourners, babies, or feisty new roommates. But he knew that voice.
Turning around, Killian let out a breath. "Robin," he sighed before the two hugged. Robin Locksley, Killian's friend from college, and besides Liam, his best friend, patted him on the back before they parted.
"I am so sorry, mate. So sorry for your lost. If there's anything I can do..."
"I know, mate. I know. It's just...A lot to take in right now."
"Of course." They were silent before Robin cleared his throat. "Um, I heard something about a baby..."
Killian nodded. "Yep. I have a child now."
Robin's eyes almost bugged out of his head. "Hook, oh man. That's...."
He didn't know how to finish that, but that was okay. Killian knew what he was trying to say. "I know."
"So what are you going to do?"
Killian shrugged. "Well, right now, we're gonna keep living here until we can figure out--"
Robin closed his eyes and held up a hand. "Wait, wait, wait." Opening his eyes and dropping his hand, he said, "What do you mean 'we'?"
Killian rubbed the back of his neck before dropping his hand. "You didn't hear the rest of it? Oh, mate, have I got a story for you."
While Killian was telling Robin about the latest development that was his life, Emma overheard people talking about how awful this all was and how was Henry going to grow up without his parents. Living in a house with two strange people would be so weird for him. He would surely need some kind of therapy.
Emma was holding onto the plate so tightly she was surprised it didn't snap under the pressure. She sure felt like she was going to need therapy, just listening to these people who barely knew Henry and wouldn't be able to pick him out in a lineup of babies.
"Emma?"
She turned around to see her boss, Graham Hubert, looking down at her with that damn pity in his eyes.
Graham was a nice man, and one that she really didn't mind working with. God knows that the crimes in Storybrooke are minute at best, but he did have a way of making the boring interesting. And normally she wouldn't mind spending time with him.
But right now, right now she didn't need to see the tears in his eyes. Because Graham was someone who made her laugh. He shouldn't be crying. It's not what he does.
"I'm so sorry, Emma. Really I am. I--If you need anything, anything at all, please let me know."
"I...Yeah...Thanks."
Quickly turning around, Emma started heading towards the kitchen, the plate still barely holding it together in her hands.
When she stopped to lean against the wall for a moment, she felt a hand on her shoulder and turned around to see Mary Margaret standing behind her, David just a little to the side. Mary Margaret gently took the plate out of Emma's hands and did something with it, Emma wasn't sure. Mary Margaret said something to David, Emma had no idea what, but the next thing she knew she was being guided to her bedroom.
"Henry..." Emma started to say as Mary Margaret closed the door.
"Is safe with David. He's fine." The petite woman turned to Emma. "My concern right now is how are you doing. You don't look so good."
"I'm fine."
Mary Margaret gave a sad smile. It was clear she didn't believe Emma. "How about we try this again. I'm going to ask you how you are and you'll give me an actual answer, okay? Now, how are you?"
Emma didn't answer. That said everything.
Mary Margaret wobbled over to Emma and sat beside her on the bed.  "I know I don't know you too well, Emma, but I do know a lost soul when I see one." She was quiet for a moment. Emma did nothing to fill the silence. Mary Margaret spoke up again. "I have no idea what you are going through. I won't pretend that I do. I've lost my parents, that is true, but I never had the added responsibility of another life on top of it. That, I think, is the hardest part in all of this. That now you suddenly have Henry. It's not just you anymore, huh? Now you have another mouth to feed. Another's interest at heart. That must feel overwhelming." Once more, Emma said nothing.
She didn't know what Mary Margaret expected. Emma wasn't the talk-about-your-feelings type, and even less so with people she'd had met only a handful of times before. Mary Margaret was always nice to her, that was true, long before any of this was happening. But Emma was a closed off person, only confiding her personal thoughts to one person.
And now that person is gone.
But Emma couldn't think about that. She had to be strong for Henry. She could carry on. For him. God knew it was going to be tough, but she had to be strong. She just had to be.
Bringing her back into the present, Mary Margaret was gently rubbing her shoulder. She didn't like to be touched, and normally would have shrugged it off, but it felt...comforting. Sure she had gotten a lot of hugs today (mostly from Anna, but those was hugs of sadness, not comfort). But Mary Margaret's touch was almost...Well, if Emma didn't know any better she would have said it was the touch of a mother. Never really having had a mother, she had nothing to compare it to, however.
After a moment, there was a knock on the door and David poked his head in, a crying Henry on his hip. "I so sorry, I don't mean to bother you. But he's crying, and I can't find Killian--"
Emma immediately stood up and reached out for Henry. "It's fine. Really." Taking him into her arms, she held him closely, her mouth at the crown of his head. "Could you guys leave us for a moment? I just need to regroup before heading back out."
Mary Margaret nodded before slowly getting up. As she reached the door, she turned back and said, "Emma, please listen. I know we don't know each other too well, but...We can help. Please let us help you and Killian."
Emma nodded, hugging Henry a little tighter. He wasn't crying anymore, which probably meant he just needed to be away from the crowd for a while. You and me both, kid.
Mary Margaret and David left, closing the door behind him. Emma sat down on her bed and sobbed quietly into Henry's soft brown hair.
~*~
The wake was painful, but it was finally over and Killian and Emma could finally move on with their lives.
Or so they thought.
Two weeks after the funeral, Killian thought he was going to pull his hair out. Henry wouldn't stop crying and Emma was ignoring Killian every chance she got. It wasn't at all what he pictured when he thought of having a family.
Which we're not, he reminded himself as Emma almost screamed at Henry when he spit out his mashed peas. Not that Killian could blame him; that smelt like shit, God knows what it tasted like. Instead of asking Killian for assistance or even just acknowledging that he was in the same room, Emma tried once more to get Henry to eat the mashed peas.
"Come on, Henry, just eat a little. I swear I'll get you all the chocolate you want, if you just eat a little of the peas..."
But once more, he spit them out, crying because he was hungry and the peas tasted awful.
"He doesn't want them, Swan," Killian finally had to point out, though that much was obvious.
"Well, he has to eat something and it's either this or smashed squash."
Killian looked around the kitchen, trying to figure out what he could give Henry before Emma completely lost her mind. Finally seeing something, he grabbed the tin of apple and banana flavored puffs and poured them out on the tray in front of Henry.
Henry looked down at them, his crying stopping instantly. He grabbed one with one chubby hand and put it in his mouth and smiled.
Emma looked up at Killian. He didn't know if she was thankful for that or if she wanted to kill him, making him eat something he wasn't supposed to. Either way, it got them a few minutes of quiet, and right now that was enough for him.
"You're welcome," he said before putting the tin on the table and walking towards the living room.
He was sure that Emma was mad at him; wouldn't be the first time he felt those icy green eyes in his direction. But he couldn't just let Henry scream when a simple change in his diet would be all that he needed. He wasn't going to die from eating those puffs. He knew eventually Emma would thank him, though he knew better than to hold his breath.
He just got comfortable on the couch when the doorbell rang. Groaning with frustration, Killian got up and opened the door to find a pretty brunette on the other side. She was shorter than Killian, even though she was in heels, with a soft face and big blue eyes.
"Hello!" she said with an accent, though he wasn't sure where in Europe she was from. "I'm Belle Gold. I'm from the Child Protective Services. I'm here to talk about Henry Jones."
Killian almost slammed the door in her face. Oh crap. He forgot all about this. Child Protective Services wanted to make sure that Emma and he were doing a good job raising Henry, otherwise there were going to take him away from them. Liam's lawyer had mentioned that part, Killian was sure of it. However, he was so dazed with the idea that he suddenly became like a father-figure to Henry that he didn't really retain any of it.
He suddenly couldn't remember if he (because let's be honest, Emma was not a neat person) cleaned up recently. It had been weeks since anyone was over, and he suddenly couldn't remember if he put away Henry's toys. Or where they scattered all over the floor, waiting for someone to trip over them?
"Er, Mr. Jones? Are you okay?"
Shaking his head lightly, Killian gave a fake smile. "Aye. Of course. Where are my manners? Come in, please."
He suddenly felt like a high schooler sent to the headmaster's office (a feeling that he hasn't felt in a long time) and he wasn't sure why. It wasn't like he or Emma did something they weren't suppose to do, like drink excessive amounts of alcohol or smoke something illegally. Other than a bit of a mess, they were fine.
"Killian? Who is--Oh. Hello." Emma came into the hallway, Henry on her hip. He was munching on something, and Killian was pretty sure it was Emma's hair.
Belle turned to Emma. "Ah, you must be Ms. Swan."
"I am," Emma said hesitantly, looking at Killian before looking back at Belle.
"I'm Belle Gold from Child Protective Services."
"Oh! We, er, we weren't expecting you."
Belle gave a small chuckle. "That's why we call them surprise visits!"
"Oh. Right, yes, of course. Um, so..." Emma obviously didn't know where to begin, and Killian felt so nervous all of a sudden. He was terrified that she would find something wrong with them and take Henry away. Henry was the only thing he had left of his brother; they couldn't take him away too!
Belle must have noticed the look on their faces because she smiled softly and suggested, "Why don't we start with a look around the house, shall we?"
"Yes!" Killian shouted, making Emma give a small jump. "Excellent idea, wonderful. Why don't I do that? Come, I'll show you around."
Killian was working on automatic, not really sure what was coming out of his mouth. He showed her the first floor, that contained the kitchen, living room, dining room, a bathroom, and what Liam had referred to as his "man cave," which overlooked the spacious backyard and had a pull out bed couch and a television in it, along with the books he loved. This was the room he was sleeping in, and Killian was thankful that he put his clothes away yesterday.
The second floor had the bedrooms, which was the master suite (neither of which Emma or Killian had set foot in), the guest room (which was where Emma was sleeping), a bathroom, and Henry's room. Everything looked neat, yet a tad bit messy. Obvious that people lived there but it wasn't a disaster. Killian was satisfied.
When they came back into the living room, Emma was playing with Henry on the floor, pressing buttons from some toy that Killian actually gave him for his first birthday. He wanted to find the most annoying toy, the toy that played a thousand different noises and talked all day. Well, of course it was now Killian who was stuck with it.
Karma really was a bitch.
Emma looked up as Killian and Belle walked in. Killian could tell that Emma had no idea what that toy did that she was currently playing with. Probably just wanted to look busy for when they returned.
"Now, Ms. Swan, Mr. Jones, if you could both join me at the table, I would love to have a conversation with you."
Belle got situated on one side of the table and Emma, carrying Henry, and Killian on the other. They sat with some distance apart, which Killian didn't take notice of until later.
"Now," Belle said, taking out a pad of legal paper and a pen. She clicked the top. "If you could please tell me a little about yourself." They were both silent. Belle sighed. "I'm not the bad guy here."
"You might as well be," Emma muttered darkly.
Belle put her pen down with a sigh. "Look, I have to report facts, that's all. If you want the truth, right now I see nothing wrong with Henry and his life here. He's well taken care of, I could see that the moment you walked in before, Ms. Swan. But I do need some background information on the two of you. If it makes you feel any better, I'm just checking to see if you are prostitutes or drug dealers."
"I'm the Deputy Sheriff," Emma stated. Belle nodded and picked up her pen, writing it down. "I, er, work with Graham Humbert, the Sheriff."
"Is that a dangerous job, Ms. Swan?"
"If I lived in New York, then yeah. But here? In Storybrooke, where the biggest crime is a petty robbery? No, not too dangerous."
"Do you work nights?"
"Occasionally."
Belle wrote that all down. Killian noted that Emma was holding onto Henry tightly and gave a small smile. The Queen Bitch had emotions after all. Except for the night of the accident, Emma hasn't shed one tear that Killian has seen. Granted, he didn't like crying in front of people, and often let his feelings about this whole situation out at night. But still. Not one tear? He wondered how high those walls of hers were.
"And you Mr. Jones? What do you do?"
"I'm a mechanic. At the docks. I fix the boats."
Emma snapped her head looking at him. "I thought you were a bartender?"
He cocked an eyebrow. "I was. Four years ago. Now I'm mechanic."
Emma went to comment, but instead bit her lip. She faced Belle again.
"Great. Now, one more question before I go. This is a bit awkward, so please bare with me. This...situation is more complicated than usual. Usually in a situation like this, the people who get the custody of a child are family members." She put up a hand when Killian opened his mouth. "I'm aware that you Liam Jones' brother, Mr. Jones. My point is this: people who get custody of a child usually are in some form of relationship. Now if I understand this correctly, except for the fact that your brother," she said looking at Killian. "And your best friend," she turned to Emma, "were married, you have no connection between the two of you, correct?"
"Er, well, yes," Emma stated.
"That's correct," Killian added.
"Now, this is the embarrassing part." She took a deep breath. "Are you two sleeping together?"
"What?! No!" Emma shouted.
"Absolutely not!" Killian yelled.
Belle held up her hands. "I'm sorry. I just had to check. Do either of you have romantic or...well, lustful feelings for the other?"
"No!" Killian yelled again.
"Why are you asking these questions?"
"Because, Ms. Swan, sex makes things complicated. Even when you're not having it, it's complicated. What we want is to make sure that Henry stays away from such complications. Let's face it, his life has not been easy and he's barely begun. I noticed that when I came in here, things were....well, cool between the two of you. Not in a bad sense," she rushed to say when Emma and Killian looked at each other. "But more in the sense that perhaps you two are a bit over your heads." She closed her pad with a loud snap, making both Emma and Killian jump. "If you two don't have any more questions, I'll see you soon."
"How many more times do you come to visit us?" Killian asked as they stood up.
"Two more times. The last one is when I decide if you two are a good for Henry. That's usually by the end of the first year. Bye! Nice meeting you!"
Without being escorted out, Belle walked out of their kitchen and the house. For the time being.
Emma leaned forward, one elbow down on the table, hand rubbing her head as Killian scratched the back of his head. She took a deep breath before saying, "Well, that's over with."
Killian nodded. "Yep."
They were silent before Emma blurted, "Did she need to know about our relationship? Seems a bit personal to me."
"She needs to know that we're a good match for Henry. Remember, that's what's important."
"Of course I know that!" she snapped.
He gave a sad chuckle. "And I wondered why she thought we were cold to each other. We must have looked miserable in her eyes!"
"Oh, shut it, Jones," Emma growled before storming away.
It was Killian's turn to lean on the table. "Cool, indeed."

How SparkNotes' social media accounts mastered the art of meme-ing literature
Tumblr media
Most millennials know SparkNotes as the ultimate no-nonsense study buddy, but today’s students not only receive help with schoolwork from the website, they get high-quality entertainment, too.
SparkNotes remains a crucial tool for text comprehension — full of study guides and supplemental resources on english literature, philosophy, poetry, and more. But over the past two years it’s also become a source of some of the internet’s most quick-witted, thought-provoking, and ambitious memes.
SparkNotes' Twitter and Instagram accounts have carved a unique niche for themselves online by posting literary memes that find perfect parallels  between classic works like Macbeth, The Great Gatsby, Lord of the Flies, and Frankenstein, and present-day pop culture favorites like The Office, Parks and Rec, and more.
It may come as a surprise to those who once frequented the site for the sole purpose of better understanding Shakespeare plays before a final exam or catching up on assigned chapters of The Catcher in the Rye before the bell rang, but SparkNotes is cool now, and absolutely killing the social media game.
SEE ALSO: The magic of Book Fairies
As someone who spends the majority of her workday on the internet and splits her leisure time almost exclusively between reading books and re-watching episodes of The Office, I fell in love with the account's near-perfect meme execution after mere minutes of scrolling through posts.
In a world with so many bad brand tweets and tone-deaf memes, I felt compelled to seek out the well-read meme masters behind SparkNotes' social media to learn how it is they manage to make each and every post so good.
How SparkNotes' social media became LIT ✨📚
Chelsea Aaron, a 31-year-old senior editor for SparkNotes, is a huge part of the success. She started managing the site's Instagram in September 2017, and her meme approach has helped the account grow from 5,000 to 134,000 followers.
"When I first started managing the account, I tried a bunch of different things," Aaron explained in an email. "I ran illustrations and original content from our blog, and I also borrowed memes from our Twitter ... The memes seemed to get the most likes, so I started making and posting those on a regular basis, and now I try to do four to five per week."

Aaron discovered the account's recipe for success by not only making memes about some of SparkNotes' most popular, highly searched guides — which include Shakespeare's plays, The Great Gatsby, and Pride and Prejudice — but by mashing them together with a few modern television shows that she's personally passionate about, such as The Office, Parks and Rec, Arrested Development, and John Mulaney's comedy specials. She's also known for hilariously retelling entire works (SparkNotes style, so, abridged versions) using the account's Highlight feature.
Tumblr media

The brilliantly sharp, comical posts seem effortless, but Aaron explained the process takes some serious concentration. Essentially, she stares at a large collection of collected screenshots "in a state of panic" until an idea strikes. "It's wildly inefficient and incredibly stressful, but I haven't figured out another way to do it," she admitted.
Luckily, Aaron always has the SparkNotes Twitter account to turn to for inspiration, which is managed by Courtney Gorter, a 26-year-old consulting writer for SparkNotes who Aaron calls "a comedic genius."
Gorter has been managing the Twitter account for about a year and a half now, and joined the SparkNotes team because she utilized its resources growing up and wanted to help "make classic literature feel accessible" to others.
"I wanted this stuff to seem slightly more fun (or, at the very least, less intimidating) to the average stressed-out student who's just trying to read fifty pages by tomorrow and also has a quiz on Friday," she said. The memes definitely help her achieve that goal.
Scrolling through the SparkNotes Instagram account, you notice it generally uses a recurring but reliably satisfying meme format. Most of the posts consist of a white block filled with introductory text and a screenshot from a television show, like so.

Gorter, on the other hand, ensures the Twitter account showcases a far more widespread representation of the internet. She posts everything from out-of-context screenshots, GIFs, and videos, to altered headlines from The Onion and trending meme formats of the moment, like "in this house" memes, "nobody vs me" memes, and more. The account is full of variety and gloriously unpredictable.

Gorter, who describes herself as "constantly on the internet" feels a lot of her ideas are the result of "cultural osmosis ... our collective tendency to consume references and jokes without realizing it just by being on the internet a lot."
"Sometimes I’ll be reading a book, and I’ll remember a joke I saw earlier that fits. Sometimes a new meme format will crop up over the weekend, and I’ll think, 'That could work for Macbeth,'" she said.
Though the two accounts are clearly distinct from one another, they both give off the same hip English teacher energy and running them has become a truly collaborative effort. "I constantly send her [Gorter] emails asking stuff like, 'Can I still say 'big mood' or is that over?' and 'What's the deal with this whole 'wired vs tired' thing?'" Aaron said.
Together, the two women spend their days discussing iconic works of literature, making pop culture references, and keeping up with the latest memes. (A dream job.) Their separate styles fuse together to make each other's posts the best they can be.
The meme approach works wonders
One might not initially think that Boo Radley and John Mulaney have much in common, or that Michael Scott could effortlessly embody Romeo, Julius Caesar, and Holden Caulfield if you simply alter your perspective. I certainly did not.
But Aaron and Gorter's work will convince you. Once you start merging the worlds of classic literature and modern television series, you won't want to stop.

When describing why the posts work so well, Aaron explained that Hamlet, Mr. Darcy, and Gatsby — three of her favorite characters to meme — have super relatable personalities, which makes the process so simple.
"They're dramatic, and awkward, and obsessive, which makes them identical to about 97% of the people on The Office," she said. "I've learned that you can use Michael Scott as a stand-in for pretty much any classic lit character, and it isn't even hard. (That's what she said)."

— Kelsey [Version 2019.05] (@flusteredkels) May 2, 2019
Gorter thinks the accounts are so appealing because they create a deep sense of community — an online space that isn't so isolating, rather a place where where bibliophiles, television enthusiasts, and meme lovers can all come together and geek the hell out. There's really something for everyone.
"When Steve Rogers said, 'I understood that reference,' I felt that deeply. I think people enjoy being in on a joke, especially when the source material (classic literature, for instance) isn’t particularly hilarious," Gorter said. "There’s a delicious juxtaposition there. I know that I personally get a secret little thrill when I understand something as contextually layered as a really niche meme, and a slight sense of frustration when I don’t."
Engaging followers and changing with the times
SparkNotes as a whole has come a long way since it was launched as TheSpark.com by a group of Harvard students in 1999.
What started out as a budding web-based dating service quickly transformed into a trusted library of online study materials, and over the years, as the publishing industry, technology, and the internet evolved, so did SparkNotes.
Like the social media accounts, SparkNotes'  SparkLife blog — full of quizzes, artwork, rankings, advice, and trendy posts like "How To Break Up With Someone, According To Shakespeare" and "Snapchats From Every Literary Movement" —  perfectly encapsulates the site's commitment to catering to its audience.
Whoever runs the Sparknotes twitter and Instagram pages deserves a raise
— louise🌻 (@_Fallxn_) February 21, 2019
SparkNotes does a remarkable job of shifting with the times to stay relevant and interesting in the eyes of its readers — and the quest to balance fun and education really seems to be paying off. Recently, the Instagram account tested out a post that called upon students and teachers to request custom-made memes by reaching out via email with the title of a book or subject they want meme'd, along with a message for the intended recipient.
"The response was amazing!" Aaron said. "We got almost 250 emails, and it's so great to see the genuine affection and admiration that teachers have for their students, and vice versa."
Thanks to the social media accounts, SparkNotes is not only helping students learn, but helping entire classrooms bond with their teachers. (And hopefully teaching educators who follow a thing or two about good memes.)
Print isn't dead, it's just getting some help from the internet
Aaron and Gorter are having a blast running the accounts, but ultimately, they hope their lighthearted posts will inspire people to pick up a book and read.
"I hope what our followers take away from this is that classic literature doesn’t have to be totally dry," Gorter said. "If our memes encourage our followers to engage with classic literature and be excited about reading, that's so rewarding," Aaron added.
The present-day approach to selling classic literature is undeniably unconventional, and the crossovers are absurdly ambitious, but they work so damn well. What's great about the memes is they're created in a way that doesn't diminish the literature plots, because in reality, one would have to have such a comprehensive understanding of the text to make such good jokes.
The memes are actually pretty high-brow when you think about it, sure to delight intellectuals with great taste in pop culture. I have no idea how the legendary writers would feel about their greatest works getting the meme treatment, but people online are definitely loving it.
It's refreshing to see a brand account succeed at such a genuinely funny level, but perhaps even nicer to see it thriving off of wholesome content that doesn't drag other accounts or get its laughs at the expense of tearing others down, as we've seen accounts do in the past.
SparkNotes social media accounts are genuinely just nice corners of the internet dedicated to making people laugh and hopefully igniting a love of literature.

music cultures and economics assignment
opinion piece: is pop music original?
whenever i hear a song for the first time first, i naturally assume it is original and fresh from the artists’ mind. but how can this really be the case? with more than 97 million songs in the world, surely, it’s unlikely that each song is truly original. how could they not have been influenced by others that came before? how can they be unique without any crossovers and links to other songs? how can they all be truly original in structure, lyric and concept?
as a music rep in my old school, i often helped out in music classes, supporting children learning the blues, rhythm and witnessing fist-hand their experiences with new instruments and genres. one particular session left a lasting impression on my mind. we were teaching a series of lessons investigating the 4 main chord of pop music today, specifically how the songs in the charts can easily be mashed up. we watched a youtube video by the axis of awesome which has a medley of 36 songs, featuring songs from artists such as rhianna and train, all over the same 4 chords; C, G, Am, F. the aim of the lesson was to get the children to consider the question ‘is pop music too basic?’. by the end of the lesson, i too, was asking the same question! just by repeating the 4 chords, the axis of awesome could play a myriad of tracks, suggesting songs cannot be as original as i had first thought.
adorno’s belief on structure supports the idea that pop songs are not original. he believed that every pop song all followed the same basic song formula, and this is what made them standardised. being able to merge (or mash-up) popular songs together over only 4 chords, shows the underlying structure of the pieces are the same and therefore not original. adorno also believed that listeners were largely unaware of the similarity between the songs, engendering a feeling of security and reassured as nothing was unexpected. this could suggest why there are so many songs with the same basic structure and why they can all fit into one another so cleanly.
i am inclined to agree with adorno regarding music making listeners feel secure. i remember clearly an experience i had during a concert that i played in. a guest musician, roland taylor, was performing a new piece he recently had written. the concert which was being held in a church and had followed, until the point of taylor’s performance, a familiar ‘churchy’ style with uplifting melodies and haunting instrumental sections. taylor performed and the audience began to look a little bewildered and confused. taylor describes his style as ‘post-minimalist’, a style that was unfamiliar to the audience and as a result they are not keen. there was none of the expected rhythms and reassuring nuance which they had been enjoying. at the time, i thought it was definitely an original piece but having recently looked at taylor’s bio, i see that even he, with his extraordinary compositions, lists specific artists, early music, jazz and bach as being among his influences suggesting that even music which is nothing like we have previously experienced must have its roots in what has come before.
music for many is a creative outlet. whether its lyrics from the heart or a solo flute sighing its way through the piece, music is often a way for an artist to release their feelings. mac miller, for example, poured his heart out in the album ‘circles’. this was released after he died but shows how he was feeling before he passed and the thoughts he had at that point in his life. the song ‘good news’ especially shows how he was feeling at the time before his death and sounds like a cry for help. surely this is original as it’s his own thoughts and from his own experiences? i like this album as i can relate to some of the lyrics and makes me think about what others feel. however, i question whether this means that the piece becomes unoriginal as the listeners may begin to be influenced to feel the same emotion as the songwriter and therefore making the song standardised? i don’t fully believe this is the case as the song allows us to feel the emotions the artists want us to evoke. it also allows us to connect on a different level with the artist, with each listener creates their own unique connection according to their own feelings and circumstances.
different genres of music have different standard structures that set them apart from each other, but which keeps them musically indifferent within their own genre. for example, blues music typically has the same features of 12-bar blues and a walking bass whilst rock music typically features an electric guitar and male vocals. adorno believed that popular music contains certain elements such as a verse or chorus which can be changed without affecting the piece. he believed that even if the chords behind the basic structure of the verse are different or the different rock riff is changed, for example, the overall piece is structurally the same and therefore standardised.
new improvements in technology have fuelled franchising and turned music into a product. music has developed quickly over a short space of time and now can be accessed by a larger demographic. music, today, is distributed on a mass scale on sites such as spotify and apple music, enabling music to be found at the drop of a hat. this easy access has allowed music production to be accelerated. technology has also been created to cater to our specific taste and preferences. for example, i frequently listen to rex orange county and as a result, apple music creates playlists for me with work by similar artists so i can discover more music in that style, which i will likely enjoy. while such services could be deemed useful, they accelerate the rate of music distribution and thus, arguably, eliminating the need for originality.
adorno believes that mass-production is yet another reason why music has become unoriginal and standardised. ‘new’ music is often heard by many different people before it ends up as a product, producer, record label etc. this process can lead to the originality of the artist to become lost, as often the process of producing the song can change the fundamental originality of it in order to turn it into a marketable product. creativity and new concepts become obsolete.
adorno believes that although such “industrial” music production and distribution is making music standardised, the product is still individualistic in certain social aspects, such as lady gaga’s whacky fashion choices. lady gaga is a well-known figure within the music industry and has produced 6 albums all in different genres. while she maybe creatively exploring the different genres, i can’t help but feel like it’s a clever marketing ploy used to reach a larger demographic and therefore earning more royalties. this supports the argument that music is now a product which can be standardised rather than an artform used to express originality of thought and talent.
so, I am left with the question: is popular music original?  i agree with adorno’s view that pop music is unoriginal due to its similar structure. the fact that axis of awesome found 36 songs (and probably plenty more now) that fit so cleanly with one another, cannot just be down to a fluke. there must be a basic song formula that they all follow they are unoriginal. i also agree that mass-production, aided by advancements in technology, is increasing unoriginality within the music industry as music becomes more as a marketable good seeking for the new markets and demographics. however, music is full of raw emotions shared by the artist to the listener. the individual element and personalisation of such outpouring certainly cannot be standardised and with hundreds of new genres that are completely different from one another that ‘popular music’ had become so broad, it’s hard to standardise. i personally don’t believe we will ever know if all music is truly original, but let’s hope that at least some of is!

academic piece: to what extent is pop music standardised?
pop music, according to shuker 2013, “defies precise, straightforward definition [since] the criteria for what counts as popular, and their application to specific musical styles and genres, are open to considerable debate” (shuker 2013, p. 5).  for the purpose of this essay, the definition of popular music is ‘music that is ‘popular’ in the sense of being ‘of the people’, i.e., music that belongs to ordinary people and expresses their interests and concerns (wall, 2013 p. 175).
whilst it is difficult to state with absolute certainty whether popular music is standardised or not and indeed there are several credible arguments for both sides of the debate, it can be argued that, to a large extent, pop music is standardised as it broadly follows the same basic song formula. theodor w. adorno is a german philosopher, musicologist and composer best known for his critical theory of society and states “best known is the rule that the chorus consists of thirty-two bars and that the range is limited to one octave and one note.” (1941) this suggests that every song has been written based on this statement and using the same formula. if this is true, it may be one explanation as to why pop music is so commonly listened to; the listener is comforted by the repeated structure and enjoys the familiarity of the songs. adorno further supports this idea when he says, “the listener can supply the "framework" automatically, since it is a mere musical automatism itself” (1941). this shows that not only is pop music standardised within the same structure but the listener. although it could be conversely be argued that pop music can’t be standardised as there are so many sub-genres of music. adorno counters his hypothesis in his essay ‘on popular music’ where he states that the listeners, regardless of the song, still stays “openly connected with the underlying scheme”, which is the basic pop formula. therefore, ‘the listeners always feel on the safe ground’ as they are familiar with the structure and the basic formula that makes up popular music.
another argument which gives weight to the idea of pop music being standardised is pseudo-individualisation. pseudo-individualisation directly translates to the ‘illusion of choice’ and is “the standardization of cultural production and of audience reaction to contemporary culture.” (o’brien and szeman, 2017, p 120). adorno states that “by pseudo-individualisation we mean endowing cultural mass production with the halo of free choice or open market on the basis of standardisation itself." (1941) this suggests that artists now are referred to as cultural goods and therefore standardised as they become a product. hains reinforces this idea when he states that “sameness is disguised by product design and marketing techniques which present the illusion of freedom and choice” (2018), meaning that disguising the artist through marketing and production design makes the listener forget that the music is standardised, so the music becomes a product rather than a creative concept and the artists are tuned into idols rather than individuals. a clear example of pseudo-individualisation is with benny goodman and guy lombardo, both are mentioned by name in adorno’s ‘on popular music’. he says, “the listener is quickly able to distinguish the types of music and even the performing band, this in spite of the fundamental identity of the material and the great similarity of the presentations apart from their emphasized distinguishing trademarks.” (1941). suggesting that while both artists have different genres, “swing and sweet” (adorno, 1941), and their music is perceived as different, they are in fact, formulaic and therefore are standardised which is the reason as to why they became popular.
there are many further examples of adorno’s concept of standardisation, one such being the songs of a UK girl band little mix who rose to fame after winning the x-factor television programme in 2011 and have now sold over 50 million albums worldwide. their hit song ‘shout out to my ex’ is a clear example of standardisation.  it sounds undeniably similar to ‘ugly heart’ by G.R.L. this similarity has been commented on by both music critics and fans alike who highlighted that the melody and harmony of the chorus in both songs sound almost identical. the very public controversy which ensued prompted little mix during an interview with Qmusic (a belgian radio station) to state “rvery song is going to have a similar chord sequence, slightly similar lyrics and melodied- it happens all the time.” (corner, l. 2016, digital spy report). such well known examples support adorno’s theory that elements of a popular song can be interchangeable and included in another. plagiarism is also a good example of standardisation. plagiarism is when you take other people’s work and use it as your own and has happened a lot within in the music industry. an example is that of the estate of marvin gaye who successfully sued robin thicke and pharrell williams for $5million following the release of the song ‘blurred lines’ because they stated, the track copied marvin gaye’s song ‘got to give it up’ (savage, 2018, bbcReport). such examples show clearly that adorno’s theory of standardisation and pseudo-individualisation do occur frequently in popular music.
when considering adorno’s research, it is important to remember that there are many criticisms of his work which should be considered. adorno has been criticised for the way in which he writes, as his style isn’t easily comprehensible. adorno is aware of this and has stated he does it on purpose because he wants people to interpret his work in their own way and to defy identity thinking. (fagan, n.d). another limitation is temporal validity. adorno’s ‘on popular music’ was written in 1941 when technology wasn’t an influencing factor in regard to releasing music. technology has advanced significantly since 1940s and has accelerated the release of new music. in the 1940s, radio was perceived as the most popular way of listening to music. today, more than 89% of people stream music online (IPPI, 2019). music nowadays is easier to find, it reaches a wider range of people and has sparked the creation of new genres. according to the guardian, there are currently in excess of “1,264 genres that make modern music” (2014) implying that music is now becoming less standardised due to the wider range of genres making up the current ‘pop music’ culture. A further result of technological advances is the increase in production of music which could also suggest why there are so many sub genres of music. adorno disputes mass production being a cause of standardisation stating, “the production of popular music can be called 'industrial' only in its promotion and distribution, whereas the act of producing a song-hit still remains in a handicraft stage” and that it is "still 'individualistic' in its social mode of production." (1941).  this suggests that pop music is original when presented to the public due to different chords and melody but isn’t original when it come to the generic basis of the song itself.
while adorno’s research lacks in temporal activity and is considered by many to be extreme and opinionated, we must take into account that so far, his research has stayed relevant and still applies to popular culture. also, even though there are many different styles of genres of music, they still largely follow the same structure and include many of the same elements such as verse, chorus or instrumental section.
in conclusion, popular music can be seen to be standardised as it follows the same basic song structure and turns music into a product which can be standardised (pseudo-individualisation). while we must take into account adorno’s research lacks in temporal validity and the new advances of technology may change things, standardisation is apparent within the music culture today.

Admittedly, today was not the best day at all. I woke up late and skipped breakfast only to replace it with a red bull. I couldn't even bring myself to look at the sugar in it. For lunch, work catered for us because we hit goal for a special promotion and my boss knows I'm trying to eat better (I'm technically his sales assistant) and he ordered me a personal sized pizza! It was really sweet of him to think of me. He knows I've been cutting down portions until I feel comfortable cutting entire foods out of my lifestyle, and I haven't had pizza in about two weeks. Not the best option, but I forgot lunch since I was late, and I'm broke as hell so I'm not turning down a free meal. I'm just glad it was small and my boss has my best interest at heart. For dinner I whipped my ass in shape and had some jolly green giant broccoli steamer, small amount of instant mashed potatoes, rice and a side salad. I want more of my meals to be focused around veggies and proteins but tonight I needed to use what I have in the kitchen. I get paid Wednesday evening so two more days of scrounging together healthy foods and then I can actually go grocery shopping! Maybe I'll put up a list later this week. One thing I've noticed in tracking meals is that carbs are my biggest weakness. Because I was born and raised a vegetarian I don't have that lean protein a lot of carnivores have so I tend to carboload. Obviously, that's probably what helped with my weight gain, along with giant portions and soda. Soda is a HUGE part of my weight gain. I used to drink three 20oz sodas per day. No joke. From January, I'm down to one 20oz soda every other day. And honestly I have to tell you I'm so incredibly proud of myself for that. While I still have a ways to go, I'm really glad that I've come as far as I have!

Wordsmiths, Miracles, and Monsters: An Informal Comparison | REVIEW
I’ve been having a lot of conversations with people, mostly on Twitter, about the reception of certain Netflix original series, especially with the release of the Stranger Things season 2 trailer. In light of that, I’d like to make my own comparisons of the content of the three Netflix originals I’ve finished watching: The Get Down, The OA, and one I’ve already talked about on this blog, Stranger Things. Spoilers ahead!
I’m going to do something that’s a little unconventional for this blog, which is to give numerical ratings for things! I have a lot of thoughts, so if you’re just curious as to my personal ratings of them, I’m putting a tl;dr at the end of each section!
I do want to preface this by saying that there isn’t really much in common with these shows other than they are all Netflix originals--they’re all completely different in their own ways, so I understand why some people prefer one over the other. But also, maybe think about why you’re not watching a series that has people of color and LGBTQ characters. Always examine your own thinking!
Plot Originality
Two of these shows fall into a similar genre with both positive and negative comparisons: Stranger Things and The OA. Both contain supernatural elements, a gang of outcasts, as well as a protagonist who transcends planes in a watery tank.
Yeah, that one threw me too.
While I did watch Stranger Things prior to The OA, the comparisons that can be made between them differ strongly in the actual function they serve during the course of the story. It’s true--the dimensional crossing being a central focus of both of their plots makes me dock points for the both of them. But I think their themes ultimately differ and that perhaps is what makes the difference.
Continuing with the idea of plot originality, I would more closely compare The Get Down and The OA in terms of taking a more unconventional plot structure. While Stranger Things certainly has its merits in replicating the nostalgia of an 80′s movie, both The Get Down and The OA strike out in search of...well, stranger things. The Get Down does a beautiful job of creating a microcosm of Zeke’s story as a reflection of the political and artistic changes occurring in the hip hop era. The OA tries (and sometimes falters) in linking together an impossible escape with the lives of a misfit group. Stranger Things treads a well-known path, though does a good job of revamping some of the older tropes of the thrillers of the age it looks to replicate.
The Get Down: 5/5. Tackles a storyline I’ve personally never seen and isn’t covered by any other Netflix original, let alone regular television.
The OA: 3/5. Has a fascinating storyline that’s a little clunky, but unfortunately comes a little too close to Stranger Things.
Stranger Things: 1/5. It really does rely on nostalgia.
Visuals
The point of television is right in the name, so we may as well get down to it. The OA has some beautiful framing of shots, but I feel that it gets really clunky, especially with action scenes. The eyetrace isn’t great and the CGI, while trying to be subtle, feels almost as in your face as the Star Wars Blu-Ray releases. Yes, pop culture references. I can do those too. Anyways, when it doesn’t rely on effects, there are some poignant moments done with framing--one that comes to mind is Buck’s scene in front of the mirror. He pulls the pictures that cover his mirror off gently and we see him briefly turn to the side and adjust his shirt. We don’t need anyone to walk in on Buck changing or Buck announcing that he’s trans--it’s just a moment that feels personal and real, especially to any trans viewers. Another moment is the movements scene between Homer and OA, which cuts back and forth really beautifully. The close up visual moments feel much stronger than any of the environmental shots, which often lack color and focus.
Stranger Things has much better eyetrace in their action scenes, which leads to better building of tension. The colors are also much more vibrant, especially in night time scenes, which I found surprising. However, the reliance on deep blues and deep reds is a cinematic trend I sort of hope they decide to vary. Tertiary colors, anyone? In this same vein, Stranger Things also relies strongly on high contrast, which makes for some really pleasing scenes. Every time Eleven goes to the Upside Down, the image of a small girl against an absolutely black background is a gripping one. While some scenes get a little muddy, I think the colors are actually great overall. Like The OA though, the CGI leaves something to be desired. I usually use Giger-esque as a compliment, but I feel that the monster had a little too much in common with it visually, but not enough with the tension. It follows the convention of “no eyes, bipedal = scary”, but doesn’t evoke any fear beyond the jumpscare to me. Also, unlike the iconic look of Giger’s aliens there’s no slick black carapace or organic-yet-robotic feel--it’s just some muddy guy with weird teeth. I get it dude, you just hatched. Please go take a shower.
The Get Down is gorgeous. Is my favoritism showing? People criticize Luhrmann’s extravagance in film making, but I kind of dig it. Tangent: So many people really hated The Great Gatsby but I think the look of it was perfect. That unreal decadence.
The music was...fine. No. Really. It’s fine.
Back to the point at hand, Luhrmann pushes the envelope with the colors, using those tertiaries that I love so much. It’s only fitting for a series that’s as much about art as it is about the social change--and who could really say that those two could ever be separated? Feeling like a documentary and a music video mashed together, each shot feels like it holds significance. Grandmaster Flash holding the crayon, the birds circling the air intercut with the record spinning, and every scene with Cadillac--along with being gorgeous, you know exactly what each one is shorthand for, even the less obvious ones. Paired alongside this world that feels nigh impossible, the CGI is tasteful and understated. Some of it still feels a little weird--I’m not digging the maps--but recreating New York as it was, but bigger feels like a task appropriate for CGI. I do have to criticize their smoke effects though. Those were really bad for some reason in comparison to all the other effects. The cinematic nature of the shots more than makes up for a little weird haze.
The Get Down: 5/5. Colorful, well-framed, and deliberate.
The OA: 3/5. Cut 50/50 between great shots and...not so great shots. Intention in focus saves it a point I would have docked.
Stranger Things: 4/5. Caters to its intended aesthetic, loses a point for ugly monster design.
Character Development
I could spend forever talking about character development in anything, but in the interest of length, I’m paring it down.
The Get Down floors me with how much it made me care for its characters in so little time. Zeke’s character arc is obviously the driving point, so he does get a poignant monologue where he lays out much of his backstory--but even without that, Zeke’s struggle with his emotional poignancy and his coming of age is evident in each scene. Even characters with relatively little screentime have at least one moment that encapsulates their struggles with their personal and public selves. To me, no arc feels forced (despite what some people might say about Dizzee's) and every character felt real within the first episode. The Get Down is so much about change and the development throughout the six episode season organically introduces these in their characters.
The OA also focuses strongly on their character development, which I feel is one of the stronger points of the show--but only for one side of the story. I care about Homer, but in the easiest sense. He’s a romantic interest and he has a baby, he’s sweet and sensitive. It’s kind of a no-brainer. What interests me more is the transformation of opinions on characters that I personally hated at first. I expected to dislike Steve for the entire series, and while I still have mixed feelings, I felt his character arc was transformative in a way that had me rooting for him more than I thought I would. Some characters, like Jesse and OA’s mother, had arcs I wish had been developed further, with touching scenes between the main ones that I thought were some of the strongest of the show. However, character motivation felt consistent and strong throughout the entire season.
Stranger Things sort of lets me down on this one with its adherence to 80′s movies--which means, let’s face it, very little character development. The kids gain your sympathy by being kids; their exchanges, such as the “you don’t have to have just one best friend” are my favorites of the series. However, some of the changes felt rushed--especially Lucas’s, which I felt needed much more screen time. Anyone over the age of 14 was, and I’m not exaggerating, nearly unbearable for me to watch in terms of character development. Grizzled sheriff who lost his daughter? Sad, but it’s been done. Struggling single mother with two sons? Same. Son of that struggling single mother who’s socially awkward and hides behind a camera? Gosh, I can’t imagine where I’ve seen that one before. I really could care less about the intrigue of these teenagers and adults! Please for the love of God, give me some more screentime with the characters I actually like.
The Get Down: Solid 5/5. Yes, I love The Get Down a lot and the character development is spot on, if not a little cliched at times.
The OA: 3/5 again. Felt a little disjointed where I wanted more character development for characters that I just didn’t get to see enough.
Stranger Things: 2/5. I’m being particularly harsh with the fan favorite, but having two entire subplots I didn’t care about was just exhausting. Added point for the best friend conversation.
To take a quick break before I get into the final comparison, here are some other short things about the series that I wanted to rate.
Accuracy
The Get Down: 4/5. Takes a lot of liberties, which is mostly fine, has some anachronistic slang--notably usage of the n-slur when “brother” would have been more common. (I’ll try to find the source on that.)
The OA: 5/5. Spoiler, OA pulls from several books to tell her backstory and The Oligarchs is a good read. Plus, does a pretty decent job with the trans and POC experience, if not a little reductive. Almost docked a point for Steve’s awful computer, but decided against it.
Stranger Things: 5/5. Like I said, it does a good job matching its intended aesthetic.
Social Awareness
The Get Down: 4/5. Excellent job regarding relationships between POC and culture--nerd culture, religion, expectations of immigrants. Also portrays the gay scene at the time as being primarily POC as well, which I can appreciate. Docked a point for anachronistic slang (n-slur and r-slur).
The OA: 4/5. Surprisingly sensitive about being trans, especially considering that even the most assholeish of the bunch, Steve, calls Buck by his name and immediately does the same for OA when she corrects him. Tackles disability issues. Unfortunately, as I mentioned, it gets a little too close to stereotyping with the “tiger parent” for an Asian family and the drug problems for a high-achieving POC, who I think is meant to be Latinx.
Stranger Things: 1/5. It’s quite bad, unfortunately staying true to that 80′s vibe. Uses qu**r as an insult where there are no LGBTQ characters to be seen. Normalizes the creepy behavior from Jonathan (and I say that with him as one of my favorites of my least favorite part of the show). I can’t quite put my finger on it, but something about the “pretty?” line feels off for a girl who shouldn’t have to feel that way to feel like she’s worth something, let alone should even know about that concept if she was as isolated as the show suggests.
Sensitive Imagery (this is, for lack of a better description, sort of like a family friendliness rating)
The Get Down: 1/5. All things considered, this is pretty intense, which isn’t a bad thing. But between the abuse, drugs, sex, brutality, killings, racism, and homophobia...it’s not something that’s gonna be easy on the emotions.
The OA: 3/5. Not as many counts as The Get Down but there’s a lot of graphic deaths onscreen and a couple sex scenes, as well as drug usage.
Stranger Things: 3/5. The only thing I personally felt sort of jarred by was “Will”’s body. Other than that, there’s not a lot of really emotional rollercoasters happening--some nudity, but that’s...pretty much it.
Coherency
The Get Down: 4/5. Fairly coherent, but I’m docking a point for the first episode which jumps around way too much.
The OA: 1/5. Listen. The ending was just so out of left field. I’m sure it’s deep and introspective for some people but it really left a lot to be desired for me personally.
Stranger Things: 5/5. Wraps up and ends the season well, does a classic cliffhanger.
And lastly, a note which I figured I should end on, but doesn’t really have a rating I can assign to it:
Should It Have a Second Season?
The Get Down: GOD YES where are the announcements for it!!! What happens to Mylene? Papa Fuerte? The Kipling Family? Shao? Zeke? I’m dying, Netflix, please give me the second season.
The OA: Sure. I think it would clear up a lot of points if it’s done right, but I’m a little confused as to where they would go from there. I don’t know where I would go from there.
Stranger Things: Obviously a trailer dropped for it recently, so pretty much everyone thinks it does, but I actually think that Season 1 wrapped up pretty nicely. Monster movies tend to end on cliffhangers, but I am pretty intrigued as to how they’re gonna wrap up the second season, what with how many questions they already answered for this first one. I’m sort of at a 25/75 split here.
FINAL RATINGS
The Get Down: 28/35
The OA: 22/35
Stranger Things: 20/35

My Hero One’s Justice 2 Review — More Sidekick Than Hero
March 20, 2020 11:30 AM EST
My Hero One’s Justice 2 has promise, but features too many let downs that can’t be ignored.
Going into My Hero One’s Justice 2, I had no prior knowledge of the franchise. Friends would talk about the show, recommend it, but I still hadn’t got around to watching it myself. What I knew about My Hero Academia went as far as knowing what Quirks are and that All Might was the best. After playing the game, I can safely say that I’m now much more familiar with the series as a whole. It was surprising, but as an outsider to the series, I found the story accessible and its huge cast of characters charming.
Where My Hero One’s Justice 2 lost me was almost the entire rest of the game. The story mode is missing some much-needed quality of life features that would make the game more digestible. And when it comes down to brawling, combat feels clunky and lacks any real weight, leaving what should be a satisfying experience worse for wear.
youtube
“The story mode is missing some much-needed quality of life features that would make the game more digestible.”
The story of My Hero One’s Justice 2 takes a running start. The game fairly assumes that you have a familiarity with the show, or at least that you played the last game. Having done neither, I was woefully lost for a while. But eventually, Midoriya’s story of growth and heroism got to me. If I were younger and less jaded, it might have even been inspiring, the same way Naruto was when I watched it way back when. Suffice to say, the game tells the story of My Hero Academia well enough to get a newcomer hooked. There’s even a second villain arc to play through once you finish Midoriya’s story, which only fleshes out what you’ve already gone through.
Between beating up villains or thugs, you’re treated to what is essentially a broken apart manga. From right to left manga frames pop up and subtitles appear to let you know what the characters are saying. It’s a charming style for the first half of the game, then it slowly became less involving, especially during the game’s points of tension. I should point out that the game does have cutscenes, but you can count how many there are on one hand. They only appear during the villain story arc, and while they look pretty good, I can’t understand the decision to not include more. It was also at this point that a couple of the game’s issues stood out to me.
About an hour into playing the story, I looked for an option to have subtitles always on or switch the language to English. Subtitles only appear during the story mode, so unless you speak Japanese, you’ll have no idea what’s being said at any other time. Sadly, in My Hero One’s Justice 2, there are no options for either of those. You have to go through the game reading subtitles and not knowing what’s going on outside of when they’re on screen. Even worse still – the subtitles are low-quality, almost as if the Japanese script was plugged into Google translate. Glaring grammatical errors and clunky writing ended up ruining intense story moments. Sure, looking at the bigger picture, these two issues didn’t change the fun I had playing the game, but they did bring down the overall experience.
In an effort to keep things interesting, My Hero One’s Justice 2 has a couple of other modes besides the standard story and free battle. An arcade mode brings what I’ve found to be the only real challenging fights in the game. Each character has three different arcade routes they can go down, each with five fights catered towards that character. With the rather large cast of 40 characters, there’s plenty to do. It’s not an incredibly interesting mode, but if you’re in the mood for a fight, it does its job.
“My Hero One’s Justice 2 is a fighting game, and thankfully, it does well in that regard.”
The game also has a unique mission mode that plays out on a game board. It’s essentially a stamina challenge and you have to beat groups of enemies quickly with one persisting health bar. Naturally, you can run out of health and that causes a game over. However, if you take too long to defeat a group of enemies and they damage the area they’re in enough, you also fail. Missions ended up being one of those modes I played a couple of times and never went back to. It’s an interesting concept but it wasn’t fun or entertaining enough for me to go back for more.
In the end, My Hero One’s Justice 2 is a fighting game, and thankfully, it does well in that regard. The game’s translation of quirks to inputs is satisfying, and with large open stages, you have all the opportunities you need to blast opponents clear across a city block or up through a ceiling. Naturally, this makes for some pretty intense fights. You and your opponent are using your quirks against each other, blasting away the environment as comic style “Bang! and “Pow!” words fill the air.
Here’s the thing – I love fighting games. There’s nothing more satisfying to me than stringing together a combo that erases half of your opponent’s health bar. In My Hero One’s Justice 2, it’s hard to do just that. Hard, but not impossible, and I appreciate that. As a 3D fighting game with open spaces to maneuver in and so many moves that knock away characters, it’s hard to string together those huge combos.
But as I found characters I liked and played with them more, I saw how certain moves could string into others. Eventually, I figured out how some moves would send enemies flying and let loose another attack to catch them on the way back to the ground. There’s a neat little skill ladder to climb in this game, and while I haven’t reached the top, playing at every rung has been enjoyable. That is, when the combat system’s glaring issues aren’t making themselves obvious.
My Hero One’s Justice 2’s fighting system has a couple of major issues. For starters, depth. Yes, it has the semblance of a combo game, and yes, there are character assists, but there are not enough options. Matches at times require little to no thought; both players go in swinging until the other goes down. And that’s a fair approach, considering how mashing the basic attack button homes your character in on their opponent. While this may have been done for the sake of accessibility, it’s another part of the game that takes away from the whole.
“My Hero One’s Justice 2 ended up just making me sad.”
What made the combat system in My Hero One’s Justice 2 disappointing was its overall clunky-ness. Everything feels like a struggle to do. Inputs for quirks, although satisfying when they work, are frustrating to get a hold of. Surprisingly, I found it harder to get moves to come out in this title than I have in more traditional fighting games like Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter.
My Hero One’s Justice 2 ended up just making me sad. The game had immense promise but was dragged down by its setbacks. With an interesting story, intense battles, and different ways to play, I should like this game so much more. Instead, I have to draw attention to the issues that have brought down what could be a fantastic gaming experience. I mostly feel bad for this game’s developers, who demonstrate that they have a clear understanding and passion for their source material. Unfortunately, this hero based game proved to be a zero.

G-LO: Yo, Limpd! It’s about time we made it up to Boardroom Spirits for a visit. I guess it takes a distillery and tasting room expansion celebration for us to make it out to Lansdale.
LimpD: That and for the stars to align so that we’re both free from our work and post-work responsibilities. Fortunately, my sports chauffeuring and your Way-Off-Broadway support duties took a back seat so that we could get into our Uber driver’s back seat and head to Lansdale.
G-LO: The stars most definitely aligned this time around. And speaking of Lansdale, it’s amazing how close it is (28 to 33 miles from Center City Philadelphia depending upon which route you take) and how much time it actually takes to get there from Center City (anywhere from 1 hour to 90 minutes, again, depending upon the route). Thanks to the Uber hook-up and not having to drive ourselves, it was a pretty easy trip to and fro. And definitely well worth the effort! They pulled together a very nice and low key event. where we could mix and mingle with the attendees while our bartenders took care of all the cocktail mixing. This was my kind of night.
LimpD: FYI, the train is only a few block away, so for our next trip out, I’d be interested in seeing if the train is quicker than dealing with the Schuylkill Expressway. But, yes, the Uber hook-up certainly came in handy. After our roundabout route through Northwest Philly and the tree-lined streets of the suburbs, I wasn’t expecting the exterior of the distillery to seem so industrial. At first, it seemed a bit like we were being driven to a secluded area for a Scorcese-esque ending. But, the expansion into the new bar area was really well-done, and I can’t wait for them to finish the patio and herb garden.
G-LO: Yeah, I was feeling a bit like Karen Hill in this scene from Goodfellas when we first pulled in to the parking lot…
youtube
I was quite relieved when we spotted the Food Shelter crew at the bar once we found the right door. Bars are most definitely my happy place. And bars with a big punch bowl filled with ready-made cocktails within arm’s reach make me even happier.
They really did a nice job of turning an industrial space into a warm and welcoming one. You wouldn’t think that drinking in a room with a polished concrete floor and a bottling line off in the distance would make for a cozy spot to have a few cocktails, but it really was. This is further proof that the craft distilling and craft beer movement is something that should be encouraged at every turn. The Boardroom Spirits tasting room is yet another fine example of urban renewal done right. As I’ve discovered during my brew and booze tours in Philly, Torrance, the Hudson Valley, Madison, and Maine, one person’s abandoned building / factory / warehouse / automotive garage / former metal foundry is another person’s future distillery and/or brewery. And another great thing about this type of urban renewal is that once the beverage makers start opening up, the restaurants and new residential living spaces are sure to follow, as evidenced by the new condos that were being built across the way from Boardroom Spirits.
Going back to the event, while the Cran You Feel the Beet Punch (made with their FRESH Cranberry Vodka, apple cider, and B Beet specialty spirit) that you chose as your first drink was a deliciously autumnal beverage, the Boardroom Old Fashioned (made with MGP sourced Northbound Rye, bourbon syrup, and aromatic bitters) was more my speed and a fine way to start off the festivities. Something about whiskey and bitters really gets my appetite going. Then again, what doesn’t get my appetite going? There’s a word for guys like me in Italian (and by Italian, I of course mean the butchered Italian-American version of Italian that was spoken in the old neighborhood before everyone moved to Washington Township): GAVONE!
LimpD: Love the idea of the punch of the day; every day a new punch made with Boardroom Spirits and locally sourced, and/or house made, ingredients. I think James Cleland, their tasting room manager, might be onto something! And, while the Cran You Feel the Beet was a pleasant Autumnal punch, the off-menu Executive Punch (spiced rum, red wine simple syrup, and aromatic bitters) was fantastic! I also tried the Made in the USA Mai Tai (Boardroom’s rum, spiced rum and triple sec with orgeat and lime) which was a really nice take on an island drink. Didn’t you order an off-menu drink as well?
G-LO: I did indeed! The Knee Buckler was its name. James said it was a mash-up of the classic Bee’s Knees cocktail (Northbound Rye, FRESH Ginger, lime and honey) and another cocktail whose name I can’t recall (they do say that alcohol consumption can have an effect on memory. I guess they’re right!). What I can recall is that it was quite deelish, especially that lightly spiced honey note that comes through in the finish. It was the kind of drink that keeps you going back for more.
James was good fun to talk to, and it was very nice of him to spend so much time with us. For a guy that looks so young (was he even 25?), he certainly had a wealth of booze and cocktail knowledge (he can talk the talk AND mix the drink!). Cocktail history and cocktail creation are obviously two of his favorite enthusiasms…
youtube
I’d say Boardroom picked the right guy to manage their tasting room operations thanks to his keep it fresh, keep it local, and most important of all, keep it fun philosophy.
Your other two drink selections were quite good. The Mai Tai was yummy, but like you said, the Executive Punch was fantastic! Maybe it’s the name? I certainly felt important while taking a sip. You know, like an Executive, as opposed to my usual G-LO Cocktail of feelings which consists of two parts regret, one part sarcasm, a splash of self-loathing, and garnished with a wedge of unripe persimmon.
With all this drinking going on, it’s a good thing they had some snacks on hand to soak up some of the alcohol. As is usually the case at events like these, all of my attention was focused on the drinks, so I can’t recall all of the details as to what we ate. There was something made with pulled pork, something else made with grilled grapes, cheesesteak eggrolls, mini crab cakes, a massive fruit and cheese station, and several other nibbles.
LimpD: I thought the G-LO Cocktail had much more than just a splash of self-loathing, and I can only imagine how bitter it will become as it ages!
As far as The Knee Buckler goes, it was a mixture of two old-timey cocktails; the aforementioned Bee’s Knees (gin, honey and lemon) and the Kentucky Buck (bourbon, ginger and strawberry/lemon juice). James really likes to take Pre-Prohibition cocktails and put the Boardroom spin on them.
The little bites were very pretty and very tasty. I especially liked that the pulled pork, grilled grape & brie and the bacon and apple bites (how did you forget the bacon!) were all on flat bread. This added a bit of texture and made them a little easier to pick up. Also, the macarons (especially the lemon and the pumpkin) from the Mixie Chics were fantastic! After a round or two of grub and a cocktail or three, I was ready for the tour. What did you think of the Hungarian backstory and the shiny new production facility?
G-LO: Bitter to the Nth degree is the only way to describe the G-LO Cocktail, i.e. highly unbalanced and you’ll lose your appetite for days. Maybe we can market it as some sort of extreme weight loss product? I  know I can stand to drop a couple dozen pounds. Anyway…
I like the phrase “old-timey”. I expect my doctor to use those words during my next physical when he’s describing the state of my organ functions, as well as my aching joints and bones. Seriously though, that was a superb cocktail mash-up. When are we going back for another round of drinks? And how the hell did I forget the bacon??? Sucks getting old!  And YES!; the macarons were delightful (the lemon and pumpkin were real standouts), as were the four women that made them. Love how the Mixie Chics back-story parallels the Booze Dancing back-story, i.e. next door neighbors who bake together decided to launch a dessert catering business, while next door neighbors who drink together decided to start a booze blog. The big difference is that they started something which will earn them some scratch, while we started something that will quicken our eventual demise and earn us no scratch. At least there’s no clean-up or Board of Health inspections involved with our little venture!
With regards to the tour, Marat Mamedov (one of the distillery owners) did a really nice job of explaining their distilling process and how the new equipment will allow them to increase output as well as expand their product range. The Hungarian bit of the story was pretty funny. Sounds a bit like the Wild West with regards to distilling in Hungary with anyone and everyone being allowed to own a still. Can you imagine how many micro-distilleries there would be in the US if you didn’t need a license and ATF clearance to own and operate a still? Then again, it’s probably better that is the way it is here. It’s bad enough that every loon with a couple hundred bucks can buy a firearm. Safety first, My Friend! Safety. FIRST.
While it was great to see the new stills and the barrel room, the really fun part was getting to try their soon to be released Single Malt Whisky. Since your memory seems to be working much better than mine these days, I’ll let you talk about the details.
LimpD: Would the G-LO Cocktail work like a cleanse? In this day and age it sounds totally marketable. And while we aren’t actually making a consumable product, are you sure the Board of Health (or some other county agency) shouldn’t be providing some sort of inspection for some of us?
While I was aware of some of the science surrounding the making of spirits, I didn’t realize that the legal restrictions are so different from state to state, i.e. a licensed distillery can produce 100,000 gallons of spirit in Pennsylvania vs. just 20,000 gallons in New Jersey. That’s a huge difference! I also wasn’t aware of the restrictions on alcohol R&D in the US. How does one get a business up and running without a sufficient amount of trial & error and experimentation? Good thing Marat’s wife is Hungarian, otherwise, Boardroom Spirits may have never gotten off the ground. I was intrigued by Marat’s description of the distillation process. The process is so clean and so refined that there is no need for additives (especially sugar).
I like how they started laying down barrels almost from day one. And, having us hang back in the barrel room for an exclusive tasting was a real treat. Over the years, we’ve had a chance to try some very young whiskies. I’ve found a number to be quite good, but I’m always left wondering what these young whiskies might become after spending more time in the barrel.
When offered the chance to try the Boardroom’s Single Malt at under 3 years, I expected to arrive at a similar conclusion. This whisky, at an ABV of 54.8% and aged initially in new white oak barrels and then finished for 7 or 8 months in limousine oak barrels, had quite a different taste. While there was a great deal of sweetness and spice upfront, and a nice smooth flavor on the backend, the limousine oak created a beautiful flavor mid-palate (so much vanilla!). I have to admit that I was blown away by how much depth of flavor there was in this whisky. It makes me wish we had been involved in the Kickstarter campaign as this whiskey will only be available to a select few as a thank you from Boardroom for their generous support. What did you think of the Single Malt?
G-LO: See? I knew you’d remember all those details. Bravo, Sir!
As far as the Boardroom Single Malt goes, I too was impressed with the complexity and deep flavors given its youth. Another thing that impressed me was how easy it was to drink without adding any water. I would never have guessed that this was a 54.8% ABV whisky. As I told Marat in the barrel room, it reminded me of a Glenmorangie 18 or Signet thanks to the sweetness and light spice that there was from start to finish. I had no problem going back for a second taste and would have welcomed a third taste too. All I can say is that if that’s what their first batch of whisky tastes like, I can’t wait to taste their future releases. We’ll definitely have to take advantage of Marat’s offer to have us come back for another tasting.
So to sum up, we sampled several delicious cocktails, ate a wide variety of savory snacks, scarfed down some yummy macarons whilst chatting with their makers, had a lengthy chat with the tasting room manager, and sampled a very exclusive Single Malt Whisky while getting schooled on the science and art of distilling by one of the owners. I’d say that this was a highly productive and delicious way to spend a Thursday night. Well worth the trip to Lansdale!
Any final thoughts to wrap up this post?
LimpD: Final thoughts? Well, I think we need to get out to Lansdale more often. And, now that Boardroom has partnered with the folks behind the Butcher and Barkeep to open their Northbound restaurant in Souderton, we might need to make a trip to Souderton as well.
G-LO: I like that you’re getting ambitious in your old age. All I can say to that is (in my best Dirty Harry voice), “Go ahead, twist my arm…”.

Trove Bot
{And not just the actual Alamo in Dallas, obviously, nonetheless the an individual I built-in a cleft between the two two eco-safe hillsides as annoying hovering pests what size Paul Reubens pestered me. Deserts cave straight into motherboardy scenery directly from Tron, tundra will give way to open seas where you can species of fish or steer a spead sail boat, to ensure that as with Minecraft, virtually every little it usually is farmed and useful for crafting. |{is the best recipe for every assorted cast. You battle and step your path using a dungeon, clear away the supervisor (which might be anything from a dragon accompanying a formless blob), and be sure to take its loot. Trove Cheat Engine Table may well be an MMOG, but almost all of their distribution are soloable, and supervisor will kill (and as a consequence confidential loot lowers and XP) depend in the event you just been in a further gamer undertaking the eliminating. It's principally saddening for the reason that MMOG developer Trion really should not be a complete stranger to this type of items--however very much the same challenges damaged the business's discharge of ArcheAge this past yr--but it is proof of Trove Cheat Engine Table's excellence the waits don't seem to impact its identification. Trove Cheat Engine Table does its safer to complete these spaces and other features, such as progressing diverse sessions, looking to establish a dungeon valued at addition hanging around, or just gathering cosmetic products from supervisor will kill, however for me, it can do not bring any type of MMO habit that transmits me for your computer system to sneak up more and more engage in right after anybody otherwise is asleep. Is Trove Cheat Engine Table any type of MMOG that Allow me to take associated with every day in? No. Whenever I logged in despite the fact that, I was geared up. You have to be |meticulous Sadly the UI is absolutely constrained. that’s exactly how it needs to be. You can find no pests, there aren't any old fashioned quests. But Trove Cheat Engine Table is great for individuals who adoration performing MMOs solo. for reasons unknown you are like a mole person and excavating your path for the entire world you can unearth your self using a quite unhappy mate all of a sudden. I won’t enable you to lodge waiting: the response is “free, dramatically-multi-gamer Minecraft for you to achieve huge success a great deal more items and so are consistently showered with returns.” Trove Cheat Engine Table is exceedingly undoubtedly developed to be catnip to young children: every little thing oh-so-user-friendly collaborative freeform property, in combination with in the proximity of-easy spider-bashing any time you expensive it, a refined Incredible-like pursuit plan and sessions, as well as a consistently expanded range of ridiculous caps to locate and put on. Want want want, gimme gimme gimme, in no way depart that hamster wheel. |This really is like many the world’s amusement park system mashed together, and this i pray that in no way can get cited from context to might seem being a suggestion. appearing outside of No-an individual wants guidance for the reason no info is was in need of, no secrets get ready for: everything’s without delay, you ought to essentially acquire good enough elements to create it, or otherwise you pay for it. Trove Cheat Engine Table delivers a hell among the tremendous amount totally free, then when it became not for that launch-of-lvl aimbot menu so packed with screamy marketing promotions mail messages and online store urls that it is basically difficult You only can, for the reason you'll have to have a doggie or wings or perhaps a speeder-motorbike. I entirely realize why Trove Cheat Engine Table is really a huge success - and more possible a signpost to an alternative few years’ expense of surprisingly out-of-nowhere reaches - bear in mind i hate it. aimed for the The lvl hacks field is certainly an derivative an individual, so a product that interests gamers will be valued at trying to pay up target for the reason sooner or later it will impact lvl hacks you like. It is far from a high quality assessment. Positive, but most people cartoons are by people who increased on cartoons and so are developing cartoons in particular to allow them to have a heavy captivate people and actual message for people. |I can not make it easier for but offer the piece of content am harmful as being the lvl aimbot designs the manner in which it would. Trove Cheat Engine Table, Following I know about lvl hacks including the above, bringing about YouTubers, In person i believe really really unwanted. It isn't like we’d dismiss the lego I hardly ever pin the blame on Trion in order to be distressed good enough to transform with this, but it's a high quality sacrilege they'd skills good enough to acquire achievements so Farmville is in fact blandly unimaginative and derivative that it is kind of hopeless to mention it with no building a assessment. Equivalent strategy Alec has utilized in various his critical reviews. Sure, it usually is bothersome when all voxel lvl aimbot is when compared to Minecraft, or when all MMO is when compared to Wow. Allow me to restate it, not genuinely complaining, but somewhat more including the critic was referring Trove Cheat Engine Table to Minecraft a little bit too much. review report, only if |Timeframe. I engage in a good amount of MMOs, Many options are kind of hard and this i loved tracking down most of the solution passages. Perhaps it is amusement inside of the unique way, but it’s closer to what Alec portrays above: hurry, hurry, hurry, prize, prize, prize. about it's f-r-e-e. And, so? Farmville is similar to Minecraft with blocky figures plus some graphical design. The case can normally be made the responsibility of obligations is about the parents to make certain that their young children aren’t effective at developing products around the net, and this i ardently have self-assurance during that, nonetheless it does not modify the reality that Trion has actually produced a training course supposed to different young ones from extra money as properly just like you Also, I’m looking around You may get your child an clothes such as a treat if they're effectively socialized. find It will provide you cosmetic products. 5 jump? Honestly. |I do not be concerned about farmville, but for the reason time-consuming mainly because it funding Trion to allow them to persist making Rift (Which happens to be, IMO, the most effective Amazing trend MMO out), then I’m confident with it. categorization They called for recklessness Minecraft that's break to young children, together it employing the portions of an MMO which have been break to young children, amped inside of the colouring and explosions to 20000, stuffed it with small dealings, and have so resulted in a lvl aimbot which comes out as genuinely negative. They're in particular focusing most people young ones. and there you are going €19,99 and all sorts of it gives you is wing/install plus some sessions. Possibly, but essentially could be, next time, employ your brain and do your homework before you type out a hate conversation that has been not useful -.- Conclusions: it is really not that you just dont engage in Trove Cheat Engine Table, you only can not. you’ve in no way To generally be honest with that issue, the subject among the web site is, in reality, “Trove Cheat Engine Table review report.” So no matter if they are not likely to perform a best Wot I Think, they are yet still placing this short article such as a review report that will happily eat web site ideas from buyers interested in an individual. Trove Cheat Engine Table kinda jogs my mind of my fav lvl aimbot which has been COH/COV. increased the difficulties. internet site which contains insured all Computer games, from adolescent young lady pony caretaking lvl hacks, to grindy Korean MMOs, sites frequently have decided to reduction several regions of lvl hacks. |I'm a developed girl (yep, just switched 40) and this everyone loves farmville. People that take plenty of cash could possibly be type who're impatient and hope an issue without delay. Was not it? For… A considerably long time? Yay, snobbery! If probably you will discover a homepage which exclusively catered inside my choices - which happens to be somewhat a good choices, anybody who does not write about them an issue an issue cess-pit - consequently developing several that i in no way will need to simply click on an issue about an issue I do not without a doubt like. Ecstatic to listen for you are weaned out that habit, frightened that point hasn't occur but still in my opinion me personally Honestly? Within my opionion, Trove Cheat Engine Table is often a relatively humanist style of the normal f2p period. Positive, nonetheless it does not be sure to take time-consuming to display can then turn to presenting them everything that a high quality, effectively-designed lvl aimbot really may seem like. |sorry m8, content (the things you wanna think of it as) that starts with “I don’t including the visuals”, then procedes to “I only guess supplemental amounts older lvl hacks for older buyers like me personally - minecraft solo” after which concludes with trying to get major items erroneous (you get That is the game Trion ripped off, not Minecraft. will probably just as well ) I completely disagree! Just for the reason that Thanks a bunch, Jeanolos My large fascination for the lvl aimbot was when you completed, you'd amusement. Which means you really cant get “almost everything” totally free Just… oh boy - who will give crap? The reason Virtually anyone be concerned about additional buyers would like to obtain employing their time? So what if it is a u . n .-overwhelming lvl aimbot, or it looks much like a further. disagree employing the Announcing farmville is comparable to minecraft depends upon as reliable as telling Wow is exceedingly very much the same Kitchen counter emerge go given that they have very much the same fine art trends. Every single install Apart from the started off has 90 action rate. You're presented with your personal instanced slice of entire world to experience one of the clubs, that has been actually a guild, and you can contour it into the things you want. Somewhat, they're able to determine simply because go, crafting equally as much or a small amount of among the targeted biome simply because imagine fit. |a good The income browse is exceedingly honest, offering services and products such as mounts, fortunate enough packing containers, plus the way to pay for wings, obstructs, and other sessions. Irrespective of currently being amusement to try out, Trove Cheat Engine Table is superior completed in short bursts due to repeated lvl aimbot engage in and easy dungeon conclusion functions. From the comparable trend as Minecraft, gamers can vacation lower the earth into suppliers and reuse these suppliers to create not merely their own personal worlds and households, but to craft outfits. Quests shoot gamers into worlds that fade away or restore at some point. better, and Fae Trickster The wonderful second destruction car dealership ranged fairy. Trove Cheat Engine Table’s dynamically created worlds are properly constructible and destructible, showing gamers a in no way-closing field of worlds exactly where they could excitement, establish, and experience. Trovians who purchase something associated with any sort in the course of Open up Beta may additionally accept f-r-e-e using Disaeon the Immortal, the famous dragon install. Trove Cheat Engine Table is really a liberated to enjoy, class structured, Mmog released for you by Trion Worlds. increased a New worlds also discover new facets and biomes. |{From the significant lvl aimbot you are able to establish a place within the minimal stretch out of territory known as basis. There'll sooner or later occur an establishment exactly where solo engage in isn’t really a variety, but that’s really way in. It is a game title subject which you can engage in for hours, or minutes. {}The Move style of Prize Trove Cheat Engine Table includes the newest Shovel Darker occasion excitement, the Plague of Shadows bring in-on and Specter of Torment, which we accorded a 9 from 10. Prize Trove Cheat Engine Table also adds a couple of new treatments, which include the ability to sex switch the game's significant figures, building a quite diverse narrative, despite the fact that not in every component way. Shovel Darker occasion happens to be the very best, but bundling these 3 chapters together, consisting of new efficiency, enhances the draw from a before astonishingly persuasive pack. Trove Cheat Engine Table is really a f-r-e-e-to-engage in open entire world that you purchase your friends, sharpen your rotor blades, and display out for excitement in Trove Cheat Engine Table, an excellent steps MMO! Overcome the pushes of Shadow in realms brimming with tremendous dungeons and merchandise created from your other gamers. the There's also clubs where you can chill out together with your clan and do quests together. Arcanium Journey Pack is made for gamers which have been without a doubt hanging around and wish to convey more out of this. Pixels have already been perfect, yet they have already been so two dimensional. Following waiting to register for that considerably better an integral part of 1 hour or so I lastly bought a few minutes with f-r-e-e-to-engage in voxel property MMO, Trove Cheat Engine Table. I called for my basic steps such as a gunslinger-type, erected my hovel, wiped out some bees and perused some postings.
