I don’t post about this on Tumblr but I have a huge (amateur) interest in materials science, so imagine my delight in learning that South India in the early medieval period was quite a center of advanced metallurgy. In addition to the amazing Chola bronzes (and their casting techniques), extremely high-quality carbon steel weaponry was produced in Southern India (Tamil Nadu first but also Golconda later on) centuries before it became famous as “Damascus” steel. Exports of “Wootz” steel from India, famous for both its strength and the sharpness of the blades made from it, were shaped by Arab sword makers (particularly in Damascus) and because Western Europeans were more likely to encounter Damascus steel than Tamil Nadu steel the name Damascus stuck.
Anyway, the sword that Aditha Karikalan gives to Vandiyadevan is really the most modern and effective weapons technology of its day. The cutting edge, if you can pardon the terrible pun. I would imagine that a sword from the Royal armory is even more top-notch than your common steel sword.
These swords had beautiful patterns in the blade from the carbon deposits that gave the steel its strength and ability to be honed to the extra-sharp setting.

I don’t know whether George R R Martin has mentioned Damascus steel as an inspiration for his magical Valyrian steel but it definitely seems to have inspired it (the patterns in the blade, their sharpness and strength.)
(The above is all my amateur’s understanding so if anyone knows more about this, I am very happy to be corrected :) I was just wondering what the Chola weaponry would have been made of, whether they would use steel, bronze, iron, etc and lo and behold, there’s a whole fascinating world of ancient metallurgy out there.)

Slag
A general term for the waste produced during smelting, slag mainly consists of oxides, though the exact composition depends on the metals and minerals being processed. Essentially, during smelting, two things are produced: the target metal/alloy, and its slag. It is typically classified into one of three categories: ferrous (containing iron/generated during iron or steel production); ferroalloy (generated during ferroalloy production); or non-ferrous (essentially, all other smelting processes). Slag is generally disposed of in a solid form in slag dumps, where they can potentially leach toxic or heavy metals into nearby soil and groundwater. The push to recycle slag, or find applications for it, has therefore been increasing in recent years.

in between, we get to find out what's happened to tom's career as wizarding britain's premier antiques dealer [i.e. that he spends his time conning cygnus and orion black into selling him priceless valuables for the cost of a sandwich], how myrtle is doing in the department of mysteries, whether that rabbit is still alive, exactly how many ways james, remus, and peter are going to manage to fuck up their pal's attempts to get the girl, what bellatrix's life would be like if she fancied an age-appropriate parselmouth, and how - in a universe where the first war doesn't happen - hogwarts students in the 1970s had plenty of free time they could fill by being complete idiots.

A Metallurgy Question
So, I've been writing a series of short stories, The "Sasha Abthoth" Series.
I'm considering possibilities for various weaknesses to give him.
I decided on Giving him a weakness to fictional metal I'll call "Naquadah", The metal in question being described as "Purple-Rose-Gold". This would be an alloy, An intermetallic Compound, That is, At first, Only manufactured on Kepler 22-b.
Note that both Purple-Gold and Rose-Gold exist already as actual Intermetallic Compounds.

So, we know that the Westerlands entire economy is mineral based and fueled by their gold mines, which have been operating for a thousand plus years. Do you think any Westerlord has paused for a moment to wonder what is gonna happen when there isn’t a single nugget left? The Westerling family’s gold mines stopped producing and look how quickly they fell to ruin.
The Westerlands isn't exclusively mineral-based. They have farms (probably with high clay soil so cabbages, beans, and fruit trees, but also cereal grains) and ranches like any other medieval economy, as well as industries like pewter.
If it's anything like our own history, I'd imagine that they would be looking to discover new lodes and be developing technology to help improve mining yields such as improving draining techniques with horsepower and developing parting techniques to help separate out gold and other desirable metals. Of course, these innovations were later than the technological era that Westeros is at - this became a bigger concern during the Late Middle Ages when the more accessible veins of ore were starting to get tapped out.
