Black Artist Exploration: The Illustrious Janelle Monáe
Tumblr media
photos sourced by @themakeupbrush
(Before we begin, Janelle is nonbinary and uses she/they pronouns, and therefore, she and they will be used interchangeably)
In each of her distinct eras as a musician, @janellemonae has not only risen to the occasion but brought something extraordinary out of their listeners. They make music for what they're going through and what they're looking for. At every stage of their career, they unboxed new characters and new stories. New challenges for her audience to address in themselves and furthermore liberate themselves from. Monae is not only looking to take up space but to nurture a community for all the arch-androids and pleasure seekers out there. She is a Sagittarius doing right by the stars, liberating people through new ideas and perspectives, and guiding us to the new age.
🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖The Wonderful Janelle Monae🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖
Tumblr media
Born Dec 1st in Kansas City, Kansas, Janelle Monae Robinson felt she was destined to be a star. They grew up in the church and theatre, always looking for new opportunities to show off their talent. They have described themselves on numerous occasions as ¨a free-ass motherfucker.” This free-ass personalities genesis started when she was young. Janelle often struggled with her early religious background which had an undesirable effect on her, into adulthood. She was once escorted out of church for singing Michael Jackson´s ¨Beat It.¨ The restrictions she often felt as a kid, is what helped evolve her into a liberated musician and adult.
After high school, they moved to NYC to study at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy for musical theatre. During her time there, she recognized that this was not the place for their talents to flourish. She explained to the Guardian´s Dorian Lynskey,
"I felt like that was a home but I wanted to write my own musicals. I didn't want to have to live vicariously through a character that had been played thousands of times – in a line with everybody wanting to play the same person."
She also acknowledged a lack of diversity drove her out of the school, and she made her way to Atlanta. This was the start of her career and where she would meet some very important names in Hip Hop and R&B. When they lived in Atlanta, they stayed in a boarding house and worked at Office Depot. She performed anywhere she could, including the library steps of Clark-Atlanta, Morehouse, and Spelman -all HBCUs. She would end up being fired from Office Depot, where says she was ¨pushing ink.¨ Ironically, she was fired for attempting to reach out to a fan on their computers. This was a push-comes-to-shove situation where she knew it was time to be all in.
Bria speaking: This exact fucking thing happened to me this year, and bitch, im still getting shoved. But I´m figuring it out every step of the way. For any of my creatives out there who are still trying to get their footing, Janelle´s story is for all of us.
The shove helped her create a song called ¨Lettin' Go,¨ off her 2003 demo The Audition, which brought her attention from none other than Big Boi. She would later be featured on OutKast´s Idlewild, and continued to be featured on a few other projects until in 2006, she signed to Bad Boy Records. This began the professional career of the artist Janelle Monáe.
The Era´s
Merriam-Webster defines an Era as a period identified by some prominent figure or characteristic feature or a stage in development (as of a person or thing)
Just to let y´all know, I am not going into intricate detail on these albums because we would be here all day. 😭
However, maybe I'll study the specific eras of artists in detail for another post, but not today.
The Android era, Cindi Mayweather, and Metropolis
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this era, everything is mechanic, robotic, and Black and white. This era begins with the first EP Metropolis: Suite 1 (the Chase). Here we were introduced to Cindi Metropolis, Janelle´s alter ego, who is an android from 2719. The records from this era, up to Electric Lady, introduce Janelle´s ideology, style, and most importantly the talent they have for world-building in audio and video. Archandroid and ¨We Are Young¨ (2011) were where I was introduced to them, and I have been a fan ever since. For more than half my life, I have loved her talent and their ability to step in and out of androgeny. There are features from Prince, Solange, Erykah Badu, and Miguel.
Dirty Computer and The Memory Librarian (2018)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dirty Computer (2018) is my favorite era because this is the conclusion of all of the world-building she created in her previous era. This album is all about deconstructing ideologies imposed upon us through the hegemony otherwise known as the owners of the narrative. It´s about acknowledging the harm society has done to brainwash us into feeling shame about our sexualities and general expression. This is the era where Janelle would come out as bi-sexual, acknowledging her own shame around who she was becoming. I really recommend not only listening to the album but watching the film. They also co-wrote a book called The Memory Librarian, which is a collection of short stories that integrated the concept of Afro-Futurism -the integration of black culture and history into concepts of the future. Basically we been Black, will stay Black, and will forever be Black.
The Age of Pleasure and The Tig ole Bitties (2023)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the newest album of Janelle´s that caught her a lot of flack. She decided to show her breasts to the world, and many people were not so happy about this. I think her titties are pretty and most would agree. Unlike her earlier eras, this is where she completely omitted the outside world. She is talking about sex, seeking out sex, and partying after a time of the whole world being locked inside. This is where her ideas of liberation hit its pinnacle. You break out the system, and now time to party & fu...
Her influences
Janelle has cited Prince -someone who was a mentor and friend of hers, Sun Ra, Michael Jackson, Grace Jones (a recent collaborator), Quincy Jones, Pam Grier, Tina Turner, David Bowie, Parliament-Fundelics, Stevie Wonder (another collaborator,) Brian Wilson and so many more. Janelle is an artist who knows that to elevate, you need a background, you need a history. If you can´t name the artists before you, who will name you when you're gone. The moral of the story: Study your heroes and icons. You may even get to work with them one day.
Signing off,
B the Virgo

I finally unboxed the Sega Genesis Mini I’ve had for a while, and had the chance to try out Sonic the Hedgehog! It turns out there’s also Mega Man: The Wily Wars, which is essentially a compilation remake of Mega Man 1, 2, and 3, so I’ll try that out later, along with Castlevania: Bloodlines.
Also, the Genesis controller is beefier than I anticipated. It’s not bad, though! It’s nice to hold, and pressing the buttons feels nice. The d-pad is also very sensitive, and if I ever get around to playing any of the fighting games, I imagine the round shape will help with fighting games!
So far, Sonic the Hedgehog, along with what I’ve played of Mega Man and the Classicvanias, strikes me as a platformer that requires lots of precision. Except unlike Mega Man and Castlevania, you’re going at super fast speeds, so obstacles can be hard to anticipate if you don’t know the lay of the land. (I can only imagine how much tougher the Game Gear version is, what with the screen crunch I’ve heard about.)
The alternate pathways are really nice, though! It helps vary the gameplay experience, I imagine!
Also, why is Sonic 3 not on there? There’s a plastic Sonic and Knuckles cartridge, but Sonic 3 isn’t even there? That would have been cool. Oh well. That’s what hacking is for.
That's great!
I never held a real Genesis controller, but they look pretty solid lol.
The Classic games are not quite the other platformers of the time, especially not MM and CV. They are more momentum-based, most noticeably Sonic 1, which didn't have things like the Spin Dash yet so you had to earn all of your speed. The games are generally easier to beat, but you're encouraged to experiment with the level design to find shortcuts. But yes, the Genesis games were criticized for centering the camera on Sonic, causing some visibility issues. If you've played Sonic 2 and got to Chemical Plant, you must have experienced Sonic outrunning the camera :P (as for the Game Gear games, yes they can get very bad :') but they're ports of the games for Master System, so very different games! They're simpler and cute)
As for Sonic 3... oh boy. Let me carry you through a fascinating rabbit hole.
It's widely believed that S3&K could not be re-released for the longest time because of its music. Now, it was re-released in the 2000s, I personally played it on Sonic Mega Collection Plus for PS2, but in the 2010s it was no longer included. But let me explain with one example.
This is the theme of Ice Cap Zone in the Genesis version:
youtube
In 1997, the game was ported on PC under the name of Sonic & Knuckles Collection. It used MIDI music, but most importantly, some tracks were replaced. These are Ice Cap's themes in the Collection:
youtube
youtube
Pretty different, huh?
Since 1997, it was believed that the new tunes were hastly composed replacements either because the PCs of the time could not handle the vocal clips of certain tracks, or because, turns out, Michael Jackson and Brad Buxer composed some of the tracks. No, really.
This is Hard Times, composed by The Jetzons, of which Brad Buxer was a member of:
youtube
I hear a couple of similarities with Ice Cap :) but yeah, this song became popular in the Sonic fandom... 7 years ago, I'd say? Not too long ago. It pretty much confirmed that some of the tracks in S3 were not composed by people at SEGA, and this is why they lost their copyrights on it.
Another shocking discovery was made in 2019. A beta of Sonic 3 was unearthed, one dated 4 months before the release of the game. It was still very rough, but again, what matters here is that it too had different tracks...
youtube
youtube
The S&K Collection tracks were the originals??????
So... they composed these tracks... then they hired Michael Jackson and Brad Buxer to replace them... then they covered their involvement? Now, tbf, if you remember what scandals Jackson was involved in 1994 you can understand SEGA's decision to cut contacts with him, but still, what a loop.
(side note, Carnival Night Act 1 Beta is one of my favorite tracks in general lol. The official one can't compare)
During the 2010s, mobile ports of Sonic 1, 2 and CD were made by Christian Whitehead, the man who would eventually become the head of the team that made Sonic Mania. But even though he was more than ready to give the same treatment to 3&K, SEGA never gave the okay... until 2022.
That year, Sonic Origins was released, a compilation that is meant to be the definitive way to play the Classic games. In reality, they're mostly ports of the mobile ports. And guess which tracks they put in the shiny new remaster of S3&K.
youtube
youtube
Fans were not happy, to say the least.
And this is the story of how Michael Jackson made porting S3&K nearly impossible without resorting to controversial beta themes :'D

Unboxing Creepy Crate - January 2019
Tumblr media
Creepy Crate is a bi-monthly true crime and horror mystery box curated by The Lineup, a website dedicated to all things sinister. The creators were kind enough to send me their December 2018/January 2019 box, and I've detailed its creepy contents below.
Tumblr media
Creepy Crate's pillow case allows you to sleep next to some of the most prolific serial killers of all time. The standard-sized pillow case features a repeating pattern of John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Ted Bundy. It's undeniably macabre, but the artist renderings make the sadistic murderers look like lovable Saturday morning cartoon characters.
The Unabalmer lip balm - a play on the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski - is as clever as it is tasteless. The 15-ounce tube of beeswax lip balm features broad spectrum SPF 15 sunscreen. It was created by CrimeCon true crime convention, and the box also includes a promo code to save 15% off this year's event. CrimeCon 2019 takes place June7-9 in New Orleans, and you can also stream it live online.
Tumblr media
Murder, Lies, and Cover-Ups: Who Killed Marilyn Monroe, JFK, Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, and Princess Diana? is written by British journalist David Gardner. Over the course of 292 pages, Gardner utilizes recent and archival evidence and testimonies in an attempt to uncover the truth behind the deaths of these five legends. This hardcover edition was released in May 2018 via Skyhorse Publishing.
I'm pleased to see novelty socks making a comeback, as they provide a fun way to add a little flair to your wardrobe in more formal environments wherein a graphic T-shirt may not be socially acceptable. Creepy Crate's pair of "Police Line Do Not Cross" socks let you subtly share your interest in true crime while putting your feet in the scene of the crime.
Tumblr media
The 2019 unsolved mysteries calendar, as you might expect, explores a different unsolved murder each month of the year, including the Black Dahlia, the Zodiac Killer, and the Villisca Axe Murders. Illustrations by Amanda Shaffer are accompanied by a brief description of the event and the prominent theory. Each month corresponds with the crime, with the exact date marked with a splotch of blood on the calendar.
Although billed as containing true crime and horror paraphernalia, this particular edition of Creepy Crate is all true crime. Looking at past boxes, it appears that they tend to lean more toward real world horror than the fictional variety, which helps differentiate Creepy Crate from the variety of other horror subscription boxes out there. True crime junkies will get a thrill out of combining their morbid fascination with the excitement of a mystery box.
Subscribe to Creepy Crate for $39.99 every two months. Enter the discount code BROKE5 at checkout to save $5 off your first box!

[171222] Nell official 2017 photobook interview (translation)
Q: Where did your plans for this photobook start? Jaekyung: We planned to make something where we could insert more pictures than we can on SNS. We don't know how many of these we can make, but we want to release at least one a year. Jongwan: I always end up buying a pamphlet whenever I go to see a musical. The moment you can hold it in your hand and read with your own eyes, the musical seeps into your memories. Books, which are worth keeping as items of memories, are different from seeing photos on a screen in that you can physically touch it with your own hands. Also, since our Christmas concert is an annual event, if we continue performing and playing concerts for the next 10 years, then the people who purchase these books will be able to cherish 10 years' worth of memories stacked together one by one. Junghoon: And I think it'll be good for us too, seeing and remembering what kind of marks we left behind during 2017. Jaewon: A big goal of ours was to make time to share not just among us, but with our fans who love and grow together with us.
Q: What is the reason why you're making it out of only 1 year's memories instead of your whole 18 year history? Wouldn't it be better to reveal our full story while you're at it? Also, if you were to make individual pieces of merchandise, with what concept and feeling would you structure it? Junghoon: I think it would be nice if Jaekyung collected all his selfies together and wrote a little something. Jaekyung: Choice and concentration is important for this project. We don't even remember 18 years ago, so. (laughter) Honestly, I have something I've collected material for. If I were to make something, then a selfie book... Hahaha! I do want to pick out the best ones from pictures the members have taken and my own selfies and make something out of it. Because there's enough of them for it. Jaewon: Then I'd like to travel for 1 year and put together a photo album. That's just 1 year's worth of rest. (laughter) Jongwan: Then your place will be taken already when you come back. (all laugh)  Jaewon: 'Gone with the merch'. Nell: Is it an 'extinction' album? Hahaha! (t/n: pun on merch/extinction) Junghoon: I don't have a talent for it so I don't really know, but I'd like to write about my process of growing up starting from when I was a kid, and mix it with episodes from my life. If I have pictures from it then I'll add them, and if I don't there just won't be any. I think opening that book again after some time has passed will make me really happy. Like an autobiography. Maybe no one would like it but me. (laughter) Jongwan: I know it's probably impossible, but my own personal wish is to have a corner where I introduce (recording/music) equipment from my own collection as an expert. I'm currently dreaming of being a next generation youtuber with the concept of unboxing and explaining the usages of the different devices. (laughter) But the problem is that all I see is the really expensive equipment. Since I can't buy dozens of those... My feeling and mood when I buy things for my own satisfaction, I want to become a good guideline for people who want to buy those devices. Nell: Won’t you seem like a shopping center employee? Jongwan: I will. Like "I'll teach you how to buy these things the cheapest". It's possible even if you don't order online or go to a second hand store~ (laughter) There are lots of foreign magazines about instruments and equipment, and I love reading those.
Q: I read in an interview that when you met as elementary-middle school students, formed Nell and performed in clubs in Hongdae, you resolved to always perform your own songs. Your independence is remarkable. When the trend of indie music swept through Hongdae, Nell's music was part of the non-mainstream indie. What do you think is the driving force behind your determination to make music like that all the way until now without ever faltering? Jaekyung: I think it's that Jongwan's songs are so good. It's a given for us that a band makes its own music. Jongwan: Even when we first started out, we never played cover songs. Nell is honestly on the stubborn side, not just when it comes to music but in general. It's in our personalities not to do things we don't want to do, and so we stuck by our wish to make music with individuality and played original material only. It has helped us a lot that we stuck by that determination from the beginning. Jaewon: We had all liked and been inspired by the same kind of music from a young age. I guess we just matched.
Q: I'm curious about what music you listened to in your elementary-middle school days that gave you such a deep determination and set the course of your lives. What's the song of your life? Jaekyung: Michael Jackson, New Kids on the Block. When I was even younger I liked Enya, and when I entered middle school I ran into metal hell. Obituary, Sepultura, Cannibal Corpse, etc. (laughter) Jongwan: Isn't the gap between that and Enya way too big? (laughter) Jaekyung: My favorite was the music video for Guns N' Roses' November Rain from their Use Your Illusion album. Jongwan: I think I liked all music. The first cassette tape I ever bought when I was a kid was by a Swedish group called Roxette. That was in my first year of elementary school. Around middle school times I started listening to metal and my favorites were Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, then as I moved to Switzerland I saw Oasis talk about their new album Wonderwall on TV, and so I started liking britpop, as well. Before that I only really liked metal and didn't have any interest in Oasis at all. I think Oasis' music became the base for Nell's. I grew up listening to bands my friends liked, like Radiohead and The Smashing Pumpkins. Jaewon: Britain and Seattle. Mine is split between those two. Junghoon: When I was young I started with The Beatles and listened to a bit of this and that. The first band I became infatuated with was Metallica. I listened to heavier music for 1-2 years, then in my 3rd year of middle school I heard Radiohead's album OK Computer and got steered towards britpop. I might not have been in this band if that hadn't happened. (laughter) I also listened to a lot of Japanese music, including j-rock. I was also super into visual rock for a while. Jaewon: Jaekyung introduced me to most of the music I listened to. So maybe that's why in the beginning I listened to a lot of heavy songs, and later I naturally encountered alternative and British music. I followed the flow of our generation. (laughter) Jongwan: Because britpop gained a lot of influence in the 90s.
Q; What is it like living as a rock band in Korea? Jaewon: First of all, living as a rock band in any capacity is great. It's both creative and tiring. Jongwan: I think it depends on the person. If you can't do things you don't want to do and can only live doing things you like, then I think being in a band is great. But regardless of location, if you're not willing to give up anything for it, then it will be very hard. Jaewon: I'm very happy that I've been able to work and get paid for the things I wanted to do the most. Jongwan: Being in a band would be difficult abroad, too. It's just a bit harder in Korea. Having no role models for bands to look up to makes it difficult to keep hope alive. Jaekyung: Of course there'll be lots and lots of American bands who give up, too. But at the same time there are also many people who are able to make a living off their music locally. Because they can stay hopeful and work hard.
Q:: Have you ever watched the JTBC program Begin Again? If you were to appear on a busking program, where and how would you like to perform? Jaewon: I'd like to play where they recorded Lord of the Rings! (the other members complain there wouldn't be any people there) I know, that's why! Jaekyung: I want to go to New Zealand too. It's so beautiful even just in photos. But realistically speaking, I’d choose Japan. Busking culture is alive and well there. People's understanding of and interest in busking is high, too. Jongwan: Can't we just stay in Korea? If we go to Japan, it should be to play. Jaekyung: Ah, Jongwan really hates going abroad for work. Hahaha! Jongwan: I love riding planes if it's for travel, but I don't want to go through that much trouble just for busking. Jaekyung: It looks beautiful and romantic on TV, but they must have worked so hard to make that happen.
Q: If you were to record a reality program, what would the concept be? Jaekyung: Won't the camera man give up in the middle? Because our pattern is always the same. We spend all day in the studio. They'll say 'we'll just use ctrl C + ctrl V'. Jongwan: We couldn't do one. Jaekyung: First of all I think alcohol would appear too much. It would take up half of our daily life. There'd be complaints that viewers can't see anything for all the bottles of alcohol. Celebrities who appear on shows like that know how to manage the airtime well, but we'd have nothing to record. But if we had to do it, I think Junghoon would do well. Junghoon: <Screening Humanity> With style. 'Ddarararara~ ddara~'
Q: I think Nell's dreamlike sound and lyrics that move your senses are your most unique characteristics, and I read an interview in which you said you draw most of your inspiration from 'sounds'. What's the most memorable sound you heard recently? And what is, in your opinion, the most beautiful sound humans can produce? Nell: The most beautiful sound humans can produce -- the sound of love. Jaekyung: The sound of laughter? Because it's the most natural. Singing? Isn't that the human's most beautiful method of expression? Singing started out as a means to convey emotions. I think that's why we made instruments, as well. Jongwan: Just sounds? Without anything visual? In that case it isn't laughter, it's too noisy. Not my taste. I think it's the sound of breathing. Junghoon: The sound of breathing.
Q: How did your music change in the 18 years that passed between the first song you ever made and your most recent one? Do you remember your first song? How much has your style changed? Or are you still the same? Jongwan: Which song would we call our first? Jaekyung: It's 'Dingdiriding'. I remember that Jongwan made it in his first year of high school. We drank sometimes even though we were high school students. Jongwan was playing his guitar next to me and said that he couldn't think of a title but was eager to play it live at some point. In the end we went back and forth until the moment we decided on the title, which we got from the 'dingdiriding' rhythm of the song. Our most recent song is 'Today'. Jongwan: Since we've kept going at it constantly we can't feel any change in our sensitivity, but sound-wise our instruments have become much more varied. We used to only play songs that a basic band formation of two guitars, bass and drums could pull off. Now we use synths and programming as well, so we use a lot more different musical ingredients these days. We can't express the sensitivity that flows within in words, but it hasn't changed a lot since back then.
Q: You've said you aim for this dream-like sound and surreal world. Through that sound that moves across the borders of reality and surrealism, you hold your annual christmas concert 'Nell's Room'. Do you have something special planned for the 2017 concert? Jongwan: We're still in the planning phase, but since the stage is what you see the clearest when inside the concert hall, we wanted to create a surrealistic looking stage, so that's the first, main concept of the stage design. We also wanted the visual art videos to have an abstract feeling rather than showing something concrete. Devices that fit well with the stage design can double the impact of the performance visually. Because our music is always the same. We're preparing to manifest our music through the stage, to make people feel things they don't in their everyday life.
Q: What do you prioritize when you decide on your setlist? Jongwan: The flow. We have a lot of songs to pick from, so the first step is to decide on the performance concept, and then we pick the songs to fit that flow. First of all, there needs to be a kind of storytelling. We're very firm in our determination not to play concerts where, sure, the songs are good, but you walk out afterwards not interested in or inspired by what you just witnessed. We think there needs to be a clear introduction, development, turn and conclusion, and that we must change the audience’s emotions in some way.
Q: In a way, going on stage when drunk has a quite cool feel to it. It seems the fans like it even more, so what do you think, do you have any plans on doing a drunken live? Jaewon: Ah... is that cool? (laughter) Jaekyung: We've honestly only ever done that once. Going up on stage drunk... (laughter) Jongwan: I've gone up on stage drunk many times, though. Jaekyung: Ah, that's because you're not sober yet from the day before. You know we're not the style to drink when we're working. Jongwan: Should I say I feel less embarrassed when I'm drunk? (laughter) It's the same both when writing lyrics and when singing, because you censor yourself slightly when you're sober. My sincerity comes out when I've had enough alcohol that it makes me feel good, but the problem is the regrets that crash into me like a herd of buffalos when I sober up again. I think the middle ground is ideal. Seeing it as we're professionals, I have to enjoy myself but so do the people who watch and listen to me. Jaekyung: Don't you think there's a stereotype that you can't be professional if you've had a few drinks? Whether you've been drinking or not, the important thing is that you do well. Jongwan: Uhm... Honestly, a few beers help a lot. Jaewon: I used to drink really well, but I don't think I can these days. Junghoon: Back in the day you drank before our club performance and showed up a complete mess, though? (all laugh)
Q: Please recommend your favorite drink and the most appropriate Nell song to listen to as you drink it. Jaekyung: Beer for me / 'The Day Before'. I remember drinking and crying to 'Afterglow' at one point. It's not a recommendation, I'm telling you not to listen to this song when you're drunk. Jongwan: Whiskey on the rocks or blended with water / If you're drinking with friends, then 'Grey Zone'. Simz from Pia really loves that song. 'The Day Before', and when you want to curse the world, 'What Do You Think'. Junghoon: I don't enjoy many different types of alcohol like the others, so soju. / Rather than when you're drunk, you should listen to 'Go' in your car. Especially if you accelerate like "wooong~!" while you're waiting for the light to go green, the song will express your will to speed off. (laughter) Jaewon: Soju for me, too. / 'The Day Before'.
Q: What do you think is the most important thing when writing music? (Inspiration, source, atmosphere, surroundings etc) Jongwan: It's not a superstitions or anything, but I have to sleep at least 8 hours the night before a recording or performance. For singing, you'll need time to rest your voice as well, but 8 hours of sleep is the optimal sleep time for me. Sleeping more than that slows my energy down. I have more superstitions about performances than I do about recording. Junghoon: I think it's important to eat properly. Your sugar levels go down. The writing process won't go well if you're hungry. Jaekyung: Should I call it 'indirect light'? You need mood lighting for your recording to go well. Jaewon: Rather than a superstition, the drum tuning changes if it rains and makes things complicated. Ah, it's a humidity problem.
Q: Looking at your photos, you seem to go on trips together often. Which was the most memorable or enjoyable trip you've taken together? And do you have any grand plans for travel in 2018? Jaewon, Jaekyung: We went on our first trip abroad to Phuket, Thailand in our early thirties. It was just the four of us, and we stayed until we felt refreshed. Jongwan: We say 'let's go' every year, but we couldn't go this year either. Will we be able to go next year? It's odd but if the four of us go together, we can relax even more. I have memories of talking seriously about subjects neither light nor heavy while we had some delicious seafood in local restaurants. Junghoon: We also went to Jeju island together in our mid twenties. We had no money but we still set off ambitiously and rented a car. We drank so much alcohol that there was an episode in the midst of everything where we lost Jaewon. It's a ridiculous story where luckily we ran into him the next day downtown in Jeju... Jongwan: Thank god we managed to call one another. We picked him up close to the airport. He looked so pathetic in the ruthless sunlight in that heated crossing that I just wanted to walk right past him. (laughter) I didn't even ask where he slept. Jaekyung: (laughter) I probably had nightmares in the back of our rental car, didn't I?
Q: How do you remember the fans who stuck by and protected Nell for the past 18 years? Do you know if you have fans who stayed with you from your indie days until now? Nell: We don't know if they've been there for 18 years, but there is someone who is always in the front row of our shows and have been for the past 15 years. And we want to believe there's someone out there who's been with us for the full 18 years, too.
Q: You've never done a fanmeeting like other singers and their fans. Jaekyung: I don't know what we would do at a fanmeeting. We don't know, that's why we haven't done it. Jongwan: Aren't you supposed to play games and stuff? Junghoon: If you're asking why we haven't done it -- we'd have to think about it, first and foremost, but even then I don't think we'll end up doing it. Jongwan: Wouldn't a mini-concert be okay? Just talking for two hours without music is way too much the four of us. Jaewon: We're very happy to meet fans at the fansigns. But we also have to try really hard. (laughter)
Q: What are your plans for your 20th anniversary? What will you do that year? Jongwan: The fans always tell us we are too indifferent to that number. I think we'll just perform our concerts like we always do, since reaching 20 is just adding a 1 to 19 anyway. I think it'll be exactly the same as always. It's good to stay unchanging. Should the four of us go on a commemorative trip together? (laughter)
Feel free to use, but please credit Nellpire.

Two Lazy Weeks in the Making… (somewhere at the beginning of August 2017)
(Edit: Okay, the title sounds more dramatic than the actual bulk of this post but lets get into the ramblings of a madman who talks about nothing whilst trying to make it sound interesting. I’m also going to have to do a lot of writing as I want to catch up with all the post I’ve missed… which is a lot. Off we go into the post then)
(After Edit: Scroll to the credits music at the bottom and you can also listen to some albums/music that I listened to while writing this)
Hello again, I’m back! Not that I really left. I’ve been over on Twitch and Twitter mainly. So I’ve got lots of plans for social media stuff and am keeping myself busy. I know this shouldn’t be a diary type thing. Those can be boring. Especially mine seen as nothing much really happens in my life… honest!
I will be starting an Instagram account this week… yay! Please feel free to follow me on all my different accounts. It sounds like it’s all me me me (meme, har har) but I promise you it will all be entertaining… like a train wreck is entertaining. Tune in to watch a fully grown man go slowly insane. (Edit: That’s a laugh)
I’ve said before that: “Waldowski” is a character of mine and he is. However, my own personality seems to be… “shining” through in his work… or my work I suppose.
(12/8/17 (Edit: English style date)):
Right, so I wrote the top part a few days ago (Thurs 10/8/17 I think) and now I’m coming back to this. I’m going back to my old schedule and goals and adding a few things. When I do Twitch streams, which should be everyday. TWITCH STREAM ERRYDAY *AIRHORNS* I may do longer than an hour. I just bought Assassin’s Creed Origins too so stay tuned for that, exciting stuff! (Edit: I literally just bought it because I forgot to enter the discount code. What a mess!)
I was watching a vid earlier about Michael Jackson’s involvement in creating the music for Sonic 3. It was very interesting and I have heard about this before. The whole thing is pretty much confirmed now but it’s interesting to follow all the theories and research that’s been done into this. I won’t reiterate what’s already been said but I will link the recent vid on the subject. There are links in there too so hopefully I haven’t sent you into a research, insomniac inducing frenzy of a pit of information where you’re just holding a steaming cup of coffee with straggly hair and bloodshot eyes just looking for your next fix on that Michael Jackson/Sega music conspiracy… and breathe. Sorry for that long sentence, I got carried away.
Okay I’m back writing this again on 13/8/17. I’m going to finish this post tonight! I’m watching Key and Peele again. Those guys are funny, anyway, what I’m doing is writing out four pages by hand with my brilliant Parker fountain pen… okay… I think I’ve really lost it. I’m coming back out of retirement (secret link of more Key and Peele I didn’t post on twitter) (Edit: I put it in the Research section below too. Also, thanks to Philip DeFranco for the idea of a secret link. What fun!)
More plans are a: “Let’s Read” YouTube channel called: “Waldowski Reads”. I still have to get a few things to set that up first. It will be much like a let’s play channel but with me trying to read a book… funny, eh?
This kinda reminds me of when I’d do work at University. I’d have to set goals, plan things, etc… I have been doing this but falling behind lately. In any case none of that matters now. I’ve gotta move on and get on with actually doing stuff.
So, everything’s planned out for a little while for me. Anything happening out there? (apart from all the bad news of course. I already know about that stuff) I genuinely mean it too with following me on social media. I try to talk to as many people as I can nowadays.
Blergh, how did I do this before? A few months ago I’d bang out 1,000 words like it was nothing.
Oh my God, I totally forgot, Na Wri Mo (Edit: Almost, but it’s Na NO Wri Mo because it happens in November) is happening soon. Ugh, I’d always wanted to try it for years. What I’m worried about is one whether what I write will be any good, if I stick to it (quitting will feel like a massive failure for me) and if I’ll take it seriously (nothing should, I suppose) (Edit: Kinda gave up on the numbering of reasons, didn’t I ?) but I’ve had a tendency to let things travel into the realm of ridiculousness before… hmn, maybe that’s a good thing? It might turn out silly and fun for once. I’m not putting “The Vague Chronicles” in there either. Maybe the characters can crossover, I dunno.
It’s pretty much 12:00am as I write this. I’m gonna get it finished before I sleep anyway. So it’s four sides of handwritten A4 pages… did I already write that?
In any case, I keep liking vids on YouTube but they don’t stay liked (random I know but what else can I write… look at this shit. How the fuck is my Na Wri Mo (Edit: Pleb) project going to look? I don’t even have a plan Jesus Christ. Also yes I’m swearing… I’ve been drinking a little bit too. I’m not an example of how life should be lived… this is just an account of how I’m living mine)
Shit, I’m supposed to disappear. Well, at least in novel writing I am. Writing is about the characters not me, at least that what I’ve been told. I’ve also been told: “Write what you know”.
Back again. Been distracted by life. In… anyway what I was saying was ugh… it doesn’t matter I’m not supposed to be in the story, my characters are… but why do I become them sometimes? I have to… that’s the point.
So, this is the last page (handwritten anyway)
Damn, look at this, I’m letting myself get distracted at every turn. It’s 4:04 in the morning and I haven’t finished. I’ll have to type all this up tomorrow. Hello me! Weird right? You’re typing this up and I’m talking to you. (Edit: … yes very… I hope I get back to the point, whatever it was)
So, seriously. I dunno. This pen is kinda cool, right? Tired AndwewsiesTM. This will go up on Tumblr. I know I’m irrelevant at the moment. So drunk WHO CARES ABOUT THAT!? Nevermobf.
So, Assassin’s Creed Origins is coming soon… in October. Hopefully I’ll be ready to do a let’s play/stream hey I might even do an unboxing. It’s a collector’s edition with a figure and other stuff too. I’ll do it like the vid I’m showing someone now. Wink wink. (Edit: It was just me reading the handwritten version out… HUSHIES) She gets to see the handwritten stuff. This is her day after all! The best fan/troll anyone could ever hope for.
Gosh my writing is getting bad, so drunk. I’m okay of course. Oh! So there’s like four things I think I have to link in this “blog”. Um, the Michael Jackson Sonic 3 vid, the music from the Jetzons associated with that, the Key and Peele vid, oh and finally the AC Origins pic.
I’m back but for now… goodbye and I will see… MAY see you tomorrow. My name’s Waldowski and thank you to everyone who read this or listened.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ILY UWU!

AFROBEATS CITY MEETS AKA
Tumblr media
Afrobeats City recently caught up with AKA to find out more about him, who inspires him and when we can expect him to headline his own London show plus more. Enjoy!
For people in the UK who might not be too familiar with you, can you please tell us a bit more about yourself?
AKA is a hip hop artist from South Africa, who has been pushing boundaries within hip hop on the Africa continent. Over the past few years, I have gone on to win multiple awards, been nominated for 3 BET Awards, worked with various African artists including Burna Boy, Wizkid and Sarkodie and more.
Who or what inspired you to get into music?
As a kid growing up, my father used to play a lot of music, which got tuned my ear and got me interested in music generally. I would be that kid that entertains guests at the house, dancing to Michael Jackson songs and other artists my parents would listen to. It was only when I was 15 that I got my first record deal with a trio I was a part of called “Entiity”. The trio broke up years later (after completing high school) and I began my solo career. Never looked back since.
If you had to describe your music in three or four words, what would you call it?
Unboxed classic hip hop.
If you could invite three artistes whether dead or alive to the studio with you to make a hit record, who it be and why?
Michael Jackson…because of well.. He is Michael.
Kanye West, because I believe that him and I would create something magical
Can’t wait to get in studio with Burna Boy again, we did a lot of great music
What do you think of the current hip-hop scene in South Africa /Africa?
Hip hop in South Africa has grown and continues to grow. Without a doubt, it is the most dominant genre in the country right now. Nigeria is coming back again with the hip hop, can’t wait to see what they have in store of us this year.
You are about to make history with your upcoming show “AKA Orchestra on the square” taking place in Pretoria in March, when can we expect you to come and make history in the UK?
Soon come. We are working on something. I did a club tour years ago, but this time we are about to shake it up a bit. With my singles “Fela In Versace” as well as “Jika”; there should be some great buzz in London city
What else can we expect from AKA this year?
In the past I had boycotted award show – but now I am back at it. I am here to take them all. This year is also about AKA crossing borders, more shows in Europe, more shows in West and East Africa. Just expect to see AKA is a city near you soon.

svt youtuber au
S.Coups: Seungcheol owns a fancam channel. He’s a loyal fan who always goes to concerts to record each of the members individually. He calls his biases his children, and makes a bunch of funny videos about them like “Just (Name) Things” or “10 Reasons to Love (Name)”.
Jeonghan: Jeonghan runs a variety Youtube channel. He sings, dances, vlogs, makes tutorials, DIY’s; he does every type of channel basically. His most popular videos are his song covers, and he probably often gets contacted by companies to model for them.
Joshua: Jisoo makes anime song covers, either sung or played on the guitar. He does both English and Japanese covers, and he gets requests almost all the time. He makes vlogs from time to time, and most of them are of him at an anime convention or reacting to sad anime moments.
Jun: Junhui has a popular cooking channel. He’s not your regular chef though; he makes flirty comments throughout his video. “Oh, but you know what’s sweeter than this cake? You.” He probably has a “Kiss the Chef” apron he wears every video. He’s really popular for cooking well and being handsome.
Hoshi: Soonyoung has a prank channel. They’re harmless pranks, but big enough to get a reaction out of people. He’s very dedicated too; he once stayed crouched inside a box for three hours just so he could prank someone.
Wonwoo: Wonwoo is an unboxing YouTuber. He’s actually one of the most popular videos because of his voice. It’s so deep and husky, and I assure you his subscribers died when he showed his face for the first time. He gets things for free because the sellers honestly just want to hear his voice.
Woozi: Jihoon makes instrumental covers. He’s super fast; his covers come out the same day the song is released. He has a handful of videos with him singing and playing his piano, and they’re his most-viewed videos. His subscribers are always begging for him to make a singing cover again.
DK: Seokmin is one of those YouTubers that do a bunch of stupid things. Think “This Is What Happens When You Play with a Basketball Covered in Cookie Dough” kind of videos. It started off as a joke, and he honestly never thought he’d get this far. It’s a side-channel though; he actually makes amazing song covers on his main channel.
Mingyu: Mingyu is a mukbang. He gets tons of views because he’s really handsome and eats so well. He reads the comments while eating and chokes on his food sometimes because his fans are so funny. His fans send him a lot of food for him to eat, and he honestly gets so happy.
The8: Minghao has a dance channel. He does break-dancing and dance covers, and probably won seven 1theK dance contests. Everyone is always so shocked to learn that he’s actually really adorable because he always looks so cool in his covers. He makes vlogs from time to time, and his subscribers never shut up about how cute he is.
Seungkwan: Seungkwan is famous for his song covers. Everyone is in love with his voice and he’s always drowning in song requests. He makes vlogs sometimes, but they might as well be covers because he just dances to girl group songs. His subscribers often say how he should be a girl group member instead of a YouTuber.
Vernon: Hansol is an English sub channel. He always has to add stupid comments and memes while subbing, but his subscribers love it. He’s the most popular subbing channel because he’s so fast and accurate.
Dino: Chan makes reaction videos. People always send him a bunch of videos to react to, and he does them right away. He cries a lot in sad videos, and falls to the floor laughing even when the video isn’t even that funny. His fans always send him a bunch of Michael Jackson merch and he cries in front of the camera for fifteen minutes.
thank you for your request!! ^^
