I don't want a love that's like diving headfirst into a pool, only to find out it's either an endless ocean or a dry riverbed. I'm looking for a love that grows a bit each day, where the effort is as effortless as breathing, and their genuine kindness is the only charm needed.
P.S. Is this too much to ask, or am I just a hopeful romantic stuck in a Mills & Boon novel, waiting for Mr. Right to turn the page?

Today, we’re welcoming KJ Charles to Fated Mates for our next Trailblazer episode! Known for her work helping to bring queer historical romance to the modern genre, KJ joins us to discuss historical romance, how it remains relevant in the modern world, her work centering queer characters and communities in romance, and the start of her romance career as an editor of Mills & Boon medical romances. We also talk about the arc of her career through early small press publishing, indie publishing, and now, as a traditionally published author.
You can find links to everything we discussed in show notes.

#Blogtour Her Convenient Vow To The Billionaire by Jane Holland
It’s my turn on the Blogtour Her Convenient Vow To The Billionaire by Jane Holland. About the Author (Author image credit: Anna Rybacka) Jane Holland grew up in a house of writers. Her mother was bestselling Mills & Boon author Charlotte Lamb, her sister also penned romances, and her father was a journalist and biographer. Small wonder she became a writer herself! Starting off in poetry,…

6 years ago today I lost my Mum to cancer.
At the time I was writing Teenage Kicks, and The White Pawn, and I'd already finished two other long stories.
Mum and I had never talked about writing, even though we talked about books a lot.
Then, at the wake after her funeral one of her friends asked me if I'd ever read my mum's books. 😱
Apparently, when she was in her 20s and 30s stuck at home with us kids she wrote for Mills and Boon. 100% the fanfiction of the early 90s. 😆
I'd never known this about her (they were pretty steamy, so I'm not surprised she didn't share this part of herself with me!)
But I wish she had!
She would have loved the world of fanfiction so much, It makes me sad that we never got to share it.
Anyway, I'm thinking of her today, and thought I'd share it with my lovely mutuals who always brighten my day - the painting above is something I saw one day and couldn't believe it wasn't a photo of my Mum, just as I remember her on every summer holiday, book in hand enjoying the sun. 💜

"FOR CONTRACTUAL REASONS, Waititi couldn’t tell me much about Thor: Love and Thunder, which comes out on July 8, aside from the fact that he tried to write it as a love story, and that his visual touchstones for the film were Jack Hardy comics and the cover art of old Mills & Boon romance novels."-- Wired profile of Taika Waititi
Wait, Mills and Boons romance novels? I'm intrigued.

Quote
She stood there for a moment, half confused by the crowds of people hurrying for their trains. And then she saw Jerry, waiting there for her, and suddenly she knew why it was that she was happy, happy, happy beyond expression. “Jerry—” she ran to him with outstretched hands—“Jerry, I’m here!” He caught her hands in his and for a moment they just stood smiling at each other without a word. They were unaware of the crowds that were milling round them, for a timeless, golden vacuum enclosed them in glorious isolation. Most of the people who passed were too busy or worried or absorbed to notice them either. But just one or two of them glanced at those radiant young faces and smiled. And as they went on their way it seemed to them too that perhaps the world was not such a bad place, after all.

THE LANDOWNER'S SECRET
New South Wales, 1885
When Alice Ryan wakes to find thugs surrounding her cottage, on the hunt for her no-good brother, she escapes into the surrounding bush.
It is wealthy landowner Robert Farrer who finds her the next morning, dishevelled, injured, and utterly unwilling to share what she knows. With criminals on the loose and rumours that reckless bushrangers have returned to the area, Robert is determined to keep Alice out of danger, and insists on taking her into his home-despite the scandal it may cause. Convincing her to stay on with him for her own safety, however, is going to take some work.
What Robert doesn't expect is his growing attraction to the forthright, unruly woman staying in his home. Before either of them can settle into their odd new situation, their home and wellbeing come under threat and they will need to trust each other to survive. But they are both keeping secrets, secrets that have the potential to ruin their burgeoning love, their livelihood ... and their lives.
THE ARTIST'S SECRET
Despite their growing attraction, both Peter and Elizabeth have secrets that will come between them.
New South Wales, 1887
Peter Rowe's life is in the city, but his soul is in Australia's southern tablelands - a place he's never seen. Taking the new land manager's position on the thriving estate of Endmoor is the chance he needs to discover what happened to the family he has never met. What he doesn't expect to find in the bush is his employer's talented, beautiful sister.
Elizabeth Farrer's world is changing rapidly. An artist whose work has begun to gain acclaim, her brother's marriage has made her redundant in her own home and she intends to leave the country and make a life of her own. Her plans would take her far from her beloved New South Wales, but with the arrival of Endmoor's newest employee - a man unlike any other she has met - she discovers there might just be a reason to stay right where she is.
Just as they conquer their most difficult obstacles, old prejudices rise up and threaten to keep them apart ...

The Agony and the Ecstasy: Race and the Future of the Love Story Part 1 (Encore)
Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash. In 2019 a well known romance writer began tweeting about other writers in her community and concerns about racism. It led to a huge reckoning within an organization called the Romance Writers of America, which is still unfolding. And although the online debate seemed to be isolated to a specific community of romance writers and their fans, it was really a…
