This Sunday, “Past Lives” is up against films like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” at the Academy Awards. While I don’t think Celine Song’s extraordinary movie will win for Best Picture, I do think she has a great shot at earning an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
Of course, “Past Lives” is an American film set partially in South Korea and with half the dialogue in Korean.
But this got me thinking about some of my favorite Korean films (plus the superb U.S. film "Minari") that I wanted to share with you. (The anchor links will take you to each review if you don’t want to read them all. As always each film is rated on a scale of ☆ to ☆☆☆☆.)
° “Miss Granny” (수상한 그녀) ☆☆☆☆ ° “My Love, Don’t Cross That River” (님아, 그 강을 건너지 마오) ☆☆☆ ° “Once Upon a Time in High School” (말죽거리 잔혹사) ☆☆☆☆ ° “Parasite” (기생충) ☆☆☆☆ ° “Train to Busan” (부산행) ☆☆☆½ ° “The Way Home” (집으로) ☆☆☆ ° “Minari” ☆☆☆☆

Ok so I saw Miss Granny years ago, didn't love it, and just came across something that reminded me of the movie. So here's my rant -
I absolutely hate the protagonist because of how she is to her Daughter in Law (DIL from now on).
The granny was a single mother, in really hard times with no education (as far as I remember) so she struggled a lot. But she makes her DIL's life miserable.
She's constantly nagging her DIL about how to do stuff and especially about her cooking. Sure, there might be a way which she thinks is better and maybe she's right, but it's been decades since her DIL cooks it in her way. - So just let her cook in peace. If you don't like it and are so sure that your son likes your cooking better - You can make it yourself for the 2 of you. - Now I know people having to make their food separately due to someone not accomodating the tastes is a very wild concept in Asian households. But then the same way maybe the granny should learn to accommodate other people's tastes as well.
2. Next, she coddles her grandson. He is in a band and doesn't work. The DIL is worried about him and wants him to do something more financially secure. Now I also know the culture in Asia and asian parents make it very difficult for people to pursue their passion and generally I would sympathise with the grand son but I also get that parents can be worried. - But what actually makes me sympathise with the DIL is how the granny totally overlooks the DIL's parenting and encourages the grandson to leave and gives him some pocket money as well.
Which would also be fine but then she berates her DIL, for nagging the grand son. (At least the DIL is nagging him about a job and not about how to cook fish, for years at that). Then she has the audacity to berate her DIL saying HOW SHE (the DIL) JUST SPENDS THE MONEY HER SON EARNS. She is giving free childcare and relaxation to him and you!?!? If the granny has raised the child alone, she knows how hard it is. She should be happy she doesn't have to do it again with 2 grand kids but instead she just focused on how hard she had it. Well this I get, sometimes people are so used to their own struggles that others lives might seem easier. But it doesn't make it ok for her to berate her DIL for spending money FOR THE FAMILY, IN FRONT OF THE GRAND DAUGHTER - MONEY THAT IS ALSO SPENT ON THE GRANNY, MIND YOU.
3. Also, the granny loves bragging about her son being a professor - makes sense as it is a very lucrative career in SK. But that is also the thing which supports a family of 5 and the granny's life in her old days. Why is it not ok for her DIL to then be concerned about the grand son's career. Especially, when in Asian households children are considered responsible for taking care of their parents in old age (Something that the granny's professor son is also doing).
Now I generally hate parents nagging children in movies to look for traditional jobs and comparing the children because how suffocating it feels. But the granny makes me feel even more suffocated on the DIL's behalf.
So the DIL collapses due to stress one day, doesn't want granny in the room when talking to the family even when she's barely conscious. Which does make granny feel bad. And I suppose viewers were also supposed to feel bad about the granny being sidelined but sorry I didn't think so.
So, everyone is the way they are because of their lives, let say so but the granny doesn't learn much even after her adventures.
4. When she becomes young, has fun and all, and is invited to DIL's house, she again politely tells DIL the correct way to make fish. YOU ARE A GUEST. BEHAVE LIKE ONE. If anything, in Asian households we are taught to be polite to a fault. Couldn't she stop herself and not critique the host's food. Also host who is supposedly your ELDER.
Like maybe the way she cooks food is the way she ate it in childhood. Does she really have to do everything according to her in laws?
At the end of the movie, the granny and DIL are shown to be getting along. But I don't think she changed much.
The charm of the movie was seeing a young looking lady acting like an old granny - subtle nuances that a person from SK's culture would enjoy much more because they would understand the absurdity of the mannerisms and looks mismatch.
I see her getting a chance to enjoy youth that she couldn't and people getting to know her fun loving side - but I don't see her learning anything from her journey - if she would have been admonished by an elder person who thought she was a young adult, then she would understand, but even that is unlikely...
In short, I hate the movie because I couldn't bring myself to care for the protagonist's feelings.
There might some details I don't recall but yeah this is based on the gist of the movie I remember.
P.S. - Please feel free to write in whether you agree or not.

people who have never read Discworld: why are you all caught up in Good Omens metas and expecting something dark or angsty. GO is a comedy, a parody, at its core
me, remembering laughing one minute and crying the next while reading Discworld - a comedy, a parody.
listed below are two of my all-time favorite passages from the Discworld novels. the first occurs after Granny Weatherwax realizes she can’t save both the mother and the child during a difficult pregnancy, so she makes the decision to save the mother without asking the husband:
It was doubtful that anyone in Slice would defy Granny Weatherwax, but Granny saw the faintest gray shadow of disapproval in the midwife’s expression.
‘You still reckon I should’ve asked Mr. Ivy?’ she said.
‘That’s what I would have done…’ the woman mumbled.
‘You don’t like him? You think he’s a bad man?’ said Granny, adjusting her hat pins.
‘No!’
‘Then what’s he ever done to me, that I should hurt him so?’
and the second passage, which is also very Good Omens:
Thunder rolled… It is said that the gods play games with the lives of men. But what games, and why, and the identities of the actual pawns, and what the game is, and what the rules are—who knows? Best not to speculate. Thunder rolled… It rolled a six.
also, as to the first passage: Granny Weatherwax and the other two witches in the original witches novels are in themselves parodies

When we first meet Oh Mal-soon (Na Moon-hee), we see a cantankerous 70something who isn't pleasant to be around. She's horribly dismissive of her daughter-in-law and makes fun of her friends — including her long-suffering former servant, Mr. Park (Park In-hwan).
She saves her smiles and kindest words for her only child Hyun-chul (Sung Dong-il) — a well-respected professor at a top university — and she dotes on her grandson, Ji-ha (former B1A4 K-pop star Jinyoung), who is intent on becoming a musician, despite his parents' protests.
Mal-soon has a frenemy — a slightly younger woman at the senior center who flirts with Mr. Park and brags about her well-off son in America (a doctor) who has sent her a plane ticket to come visit him. When this kinda-sorta friend mistakenly orders a "United States coffee" instead of an Americana, Mal-soon takes great joy in pointing out the embarrassed woman's error.

I can’t recommend the Tiffany Aching books enough.
There are 5 books that span the preteen to young adult events of a young witch from a barren place known as The Chalk outside of Ank-Morpork. These are lesser known gems that I cherish deeply. They were written with young readers in mind, but they’re absolutely comfort food (particularly if you were raised by a Scottish granny like me- listening to Stephen Briggs read the Nac Mac Feegles make me homesick). They were all available via audio book from my library app (libby).

"Do you remember--"
"I have a...very good memory, thank you."
"Do you ever wonder what life would have been like if you'd said yes?" said Ridcully.
"No."
"I suppose we'd have settled down, had children, grandchildren, that sort of thing..."
Granny shrugged. It was the sort of thing romantic idiots said. But there was something in the air tonight...
"What about the fire?" she said.
"What fire?"
"Swept through our house just after we were married. Killed us both."
"What fire? I don't know anything about any fire?"
Granny turned around.
"Of course not! It didn't happen. But the point is, it might have happened. You can't say 'if this didn't happen then that would have happened' because you don't know everything that might have happened. You might think something'd be good, but for all you know it could have turned out horrible. You can't say 'if only I'd...' because you could be wishing for anything. The point is, you'll never know. You've gone past. So there's no use thinking about it. So I don't."

Hohenheim coming back to Resembool and asking Pinako Rockbell to take her family and leave the country, only for Pinako to refuse and say she needs to stay for the people who need a place to come home to
And then Edward coming back to Resembool and asking Winry to take her family and leave the country, only for her to refuse, refusing to entertain the idea that the boys wouldn't come back home to her
