Bully into friend/lover arcs - how Chloe was robbed

I was just thinking about this. There are so many good ways to write a bully into friend/lover arc. I know a couple, but Chloe Bourgeois was robbed of this because we can’t have nice things can we, Mr. Astruc?

Good examples

In The Owl House, Amity Blight went from being a school bully to being Luz’s girlfriend, and restoring her friendship with her childhood best friend, Willow. It was so well done, too.

Throughout the series, even after the arc, we see how pressured Amity is by her family. Her parents want her to be a certain way and hold up a “good” reputation. But, Amity wants to be her own person. She cares about Willow, she’s a lesbian and wants to be with Luz, she has her things she enjoys doing (ie working at the library and reading Azura). She doesn’t care about someone being “more powerful” or being a tool in helping her family’s business grow. They even made her changes in hair color represent that, and made her siblings understand her better.

Also notice how it wasn’t super rushed. Willow wasn’t entirely forgiving of Amity right away, it took time to feel okay having her around again and getting Amity to see her as a strong person. Amity also had her chance to ask Luz to prom, but got so scared, and over the course of a few episodes, their feelings for each other blossomed naturally.

There’s also Tyler in Turning Red. He’s this immature kid making fun of Mei, but it’s shown he has no friends. Tyler has all this insecurity in who he is as a person and can’t even have people come to his birthday party without having Mei there to turn into her panda form.

This one also wasn’t super rushed. Mei and her friends agreed to go to this party for the sake of making money, not for Tyler. But they connected dots as soon as they saw him at the 4Town concert, and ran to him. Then, he ends up sticking with the friend group, which was so sweet.

These characters were given reasons for why they became a bully. And you know who else was? Chloe. Their insecurities and upbringing helps the audience understand and connect with these characters, and why they do what they do. This leads me to my next point.

Chloe’s build up

Chloe has a great backstory. Her mom left her and her dad for New York, neglecting them both and having an affair. Meanwhile, her dad is very dismissive and doesn’t know how to be a good parent. He feels the most he can do is buy her whatever she wants. He cares about her, but isn’t good at being an actual dad, moreso just pleasing her impulsive desires.

Chloe also only had one childhood friend, thanks to the parents being friends: Adrien. She’s used to being around not only her rich family, but this one cute boy who also has a rich family. So, her view of other people who don’t live a life of luxury is very warped.

Chloe has this idea that you’re unworthy of being treated well if you’re not super wealthy. The one friend she made at school, Sabrina, is treated as a servant, being ordered to do things for her.

However, deep down, Chloe does care and we started seeing a lot of that at the end of season 1 and in the beginning of season 2. She has a solid enough friendship with Sabrina that she plays dress up with her, and they pretend to be Ladybug and Cat Noir. She cares so much about her friendship with Adrien that she hosted a party and invited all her classmates, just to show she cares. She felt bad about ruining Marinette’s present to Ms. Bustier, enough to apologize and hug it out with her.

Then, we really see how much she cares about her mom in the two part special, when she gets hold of the bee miraculous. She creates a risky scenario to save these people, simply to prove to her mom that she’s “exceptional.” She also wanted to prove herself to her idol, Ladybug. Her mom is shown to be so conceited and neglectful that she can’t even remember Chloe’s name and picked Marinette over her own daughter to come to New York with her. There’s such an emotional scene before her mom gets on the plane, where Chloe cries and says, “why don’t you love me, mom?” Heartbreaking.

There was such a good build up to a potential character arc. So many episodes shined a spotlight on her actions and backstory. The audience could get a good understanding and sympathize for her. But by the time season 3 rolled around, all of that was completely destroyed, as if none of that meant anything.

Thomas knew he wanted her to stay a bully. He selfishly based her off of a nasty ex girlfriend of his. He did the audience so dirty because anyone who wanted a good character arc for Chloe can’t feel that way anymore. She became even more of a brat and didn’t even want Adrien to be her friend anymore in season 4. It’s now too late for her to have any sort of character arc that would actually make sense.

What could’ve been done

If I had overthrown Thomas early on, there are things that could’ve been done to create her character arc.

She could’ve eased up on Marinette after wrecking her present. She knows Ms. Bustier sees the good in her and wants to prove she can change.

She could’ve made more of an effort to be nice to all the classmates, instead of her losing development as soon as the party in Despair Bear was over.

She could start treating Sabrina like a real friend. Hanging out with her more and showing she appreciates her company.

If she proved she can be a good person, she can eventually get the bee miraculous back in her possession, gain Ladybug’s trust.

After proving her worth, Chloe could become Marinette’s friend or at least friendly acquaintance, like Amity with Willow or Tyler with the girls. She could get close with Adrien again and have a more genuine friendship.

Or, if we want to get into lover territory, maybe Marinette feels okay enough to introduce her to Luka or Kagami, and Chloe starts feeling a certain way. Maybe it’s comphet behavior, obsessing over Adrien, because she’s shoving down feelings for girls. Maybe she hasn’t been exposed or understanding enough of other guys who don’t fit the rich boy standard. Either way, having a significant other and/or friends who see the good in her would be so good for Chloe.

She could stand up to her parents about how she needs more love and time with them. How she wants them to be here for her and accept her as a caring person.

Rewatching ML Season 1

Stormy Weather: I’ve totally forgotten that Chat Noir can see in the dark.

The Bubbler: We can see a bit of Gabriel’s abuse. Adrien mentions that his father gave him a pen for his birthday three times in a row, and we know Emilie died several months ago, so Gabriel didn’t become a neglectful parent after Emilie’s death. I think that Emilie was ill for a long time and Gabriel’s A+ parenting started long before her death. Adrien probably pretended to his ill mother that everything was fine.

Timebreaker: Chat Noir sacrifices himself for Ladybug.

The Pharaoh: It basically tells us Gabriel’s plan: to make a magical human sacrifice to bring back his dead wife. (And Ladybug stops him from doing that every time.)

Mr Pigeon: It’s funny that Marinette doesn’t find it suspiscious that both Chat Noir and Adrien are allergic to feathers.

Lady WiFi: Adrien doesn’t seem thrilled with Alya’s idea that Chloé is Ladybug.

The Evilustrator: There’s a bit of Marichat! And a little sign of Adrienette as Adrien tries to impress Marinette and is interested in her reaction to Chat Noir, unlike Chloé’s.

Rogercop: The Burguois’ are terrible.

Horrificator: Adrien is annoyed with Chloé and pulls away from her when she tries to kiss him, but he has nothing against kissing Marinette. Why does Juleka keep fixing his make-up?!

Dark Cupid: Adrien writing a love poem is funny. And he sacrifices himself again for Ladybug.

The Origins - Part 1: Cool episode, no particular thoughts.

The Origins - Part 2: I think it was Nathalie who convinced Gabriel to let Adrien go to school.

The Mime: There’s a short Ladrien moment.

Princess Fragrance: —

Darkblade: Adrien is so happy that Marinette decided to run for class president, so I think that later he’s messing with her when he says that he’ll vote for her if she gives a good speech.

Animan: Adrien helping Nino date Marinette is sweet. Could Nino have a crush on Marinette because Adrien’s been talking how awesome she is? Chat Noir looks at Marinette’s family photo with fascination. Apparently he has very good hearing.

Simon Says: Many Ladrien moments and another bit of Gabriel’s abuse. Gabriel realises his son could be Chat Noir, flies like a butterfly (that’s not related) and hugs Adrien.

Pixelator: Adrien is stuck with Chloé and is clearly uncomfortable with her constantly grabbing his arm.

Guitar Villain: Adrien putting Chloé in the lift is hilarious.

The Gamer: Marinette and Adrien are finally spending some time together and Marinette gives him her lucky bracelet. Poor Adrien just wants to eat something, but Marinette doesn’t let him. He says Marinette has nice parents (unlike him, as we know). Chat Noir shows off a bit before Marinette. Just after she claims that he’s selfish, he helps some civilians.

Reflekta: I’ve heard opinions that Adrien is enabling Chloé and he is not, he has no power over her. She doesn’t listen to him and just wants him as her trophy boyfriend. Whatever Adrien has been doing during his photo sessions, it hasn’t involved wearing high-heeled shoes.

Puppeteer: Gabriel is Akumatising children now. Chat Noir is yet again possessed by the villain.

Antibug: Chloé’s had one helpful moment and now Adrien is happy that Marinette isn’t as hostile towards her as she used to be. I think it shows Adrien’s way of thinking in general. Gabriel hugged him once, so he couldn’t be a bad father, could he?

Kung Food: Marinette and Adrien are again spending time together. Adrien suspects that Chloé could have spoilt the soup and later mocks her. Good for him.

Volpina: I didn’t remember that Lila appeared in season 1. I think that she’s never cared about Adrien and he’s just a means to an end. I like how Adrien starts talking to Ladybug like he was Chat Noir and then realises that he shouldn’t be talking like that as Adrien. Marinette should now be convinced that whenever Adrien is stressed out, he takes a shower. Instead of a beret, she should later give him a towel. Adrien says that his father’s anger is worse than fighting Hawk Moth.

ML/LMK AU

How would the ML episodes go in the au?

Copycat would be fun. And a good bit of team building for the heroes.

Theo still has his crush on Ladybug, but this time it's MK who accidentally causes the akumatization by trying to nip that potential crush in the bud by telling Theo to back off because Ladybug can't date civilians. This causes Theo to figure it's okay for Chat Noir to be around her, and his envy of him gets him akumatized into Copycat.

Then events happen as in canon:

Ladybug: Chat Noir robbed the Louvre!

MK: You know it's not Adrien.

Ladybug: Shush, you.

MK: Do you really think Chat would do something like that?

Ladybug: He could have.

MK: Okay, but do you really think he did? Or are you just saying that because you're being petty?

Ladybug: ...it can be both!

MK: ...you know it's not.

Ladybug: Of course it's not! But he blew me off when I tried to call him, so just let me be petty!

MK: You know you’re better than that.

Ladybug: …stupid integrity. (Sighs and goes to help Chat)

MK: (Smiles, proud)

It'd be sweet if it results in steps towards friendship for Marinette/Ladybug and Adrien/Chat by the end.

Kung Food would introduce Pigsy (as a human) along with Wang Cheng and have it be an actual competition with multiple contestants.

MK is excited. Marinette is nervous. Adrien is dragged along for the ride.

And Chloe is still horrible, which leads to some issues in the Adrien/Marinette dynamics since Adrien is still defensive on Chloe's behalf. MK is less inclined to be neutral when his Dadsy is involved.

Pigsy would get his first experience with akumas and try to help the kids. And use food weapons to combat food weapons.

Pharaoh would introduce Tang as Alim's coworker, who would point out the multiple historical inaccuracies of Jalil's theories. As well as the very real ethical issue of wanting to recreate a ritual involving human sacrifice.

Jalil: Isn't your expertise supposed to be in Chinese history rather than Egyptian?

Tang: I still know enough on Egypt to know that this story isn't factual.

Jalil: But I've managed to figure out how to recreate the ritual!

Tang: The ritual that you just said involves human sacrifice?

Jalil: ...um.

MK isn't a student in the class, so Horrificator would be an episode where Ladybug and Chat are forced to work together without him.

(The school gets covered in goop.)

MK: (Walks by, whistling while carrying a delivery package)

MK: (Pauses and notices the state of the school)

MK: (Promptly moves to the other side of the street and continues with his delivery)

Wukong: Seriously, kid?

MK: What? I have a delivery to complete or I'll get fired!

MK: Plus Marinette and Adrien have their school project in there. I'm sure they'll handle it fine.

(Inside the school)

Adrien and Marinette: AAAAAAAAAAAA—!!!

Antibug would be where things come to a head. Adrien defends Chloe as per usual and insists that Marinette should have listened to her. Marinette points out that Chloe had lied to them previously and was actively getting in the way of the fight. This results in the two arguing because per Adrien, Marinette is looking for the worst in Chloe while per Marinette, Adrien is always overlooking anything Chloe does. Which turns into Adrien taking issue with Marinette's grudge-holding while Marinette takes issue with Adrien's passivity.

Adrien: You only ever look at the bad in people even if they don't do anything!

Marinette: Chloe does enough! You just ignore her actions because you're not the one who has to deal with it!

Adrien: There's more to her! You just don't understand her! She can be good!

Marinette: To YOU, maybe! She's your friend, she actually LIKES you! But you're the only one with that luxury, Adrien! It's the rest of us who have to put up with her at her worst! All you do is defend her and lecture me for being sick of it!

Adrien: That's not true! I just think you could be more kind! It's like you want to be angry!

Marinette: She tried to steal my hat design! She stole my diary! She humiliated Kim, ripped up Rose's letter, scared Mylene, and trapped Juleka in the bathroom. Where were your lectures on kindness and tolerance then?

This results in a fight and the two not willing to work together. Poor MK is dealing with being stuck in the middle until he gets captured and can no longer be their buffer. 

MK: (Playing a harmonica inside a cage)

Antibug: Would you knock it off?

So Antibug ultimately requires the other two to work together. Marinette admits difficulty letting go of her hurt feelings to see when someone is being genuine and not letting first impressions cloud her judgement of people. Adrien acknowledges that he needs to acknowledge when he or someone else is doing something harmful.

Adrien: Haven't I apologized enough for the gum? It was just gum! I wasn't the one who put it there! I thought we moved past it! I apologized already, didn't I?

Marinette: When?

Adrien: What?

Marinette: When did you ever apologize?

Adrien: Of course I did! It was right after the...wait......oh.

Marinette: ...

Adrien: I...I thought I had. It seemed so obvious.

Marinette: Well, it wasn't. And every time since then, it's felt like you cared more about protecting Chloe's reputation and sense of mind by denying she did anything wrong.

Adrien: I never meant it that way. I just...I just wanted us all to get along. And I was angry because you keep acting like I'm the enemy every time we interact! MK was fine with me, but it felt like nothing I did was good enough for you because you could never look past that first incident.

Marinette: It's hard to look past something when the person involved keeps acting like hurting you isn't a big deal.

The two eventually talk things out—quickly, because MK is still in trouble.

MK is just glad his cousin and friend are getting along.

While I too am apprehensive about the rumors regarding the Paris special, I am tempted have Shadybug appear in season of a hypothetical ML reboot thanks to an akuma (post-Antibug) that summons people from altenate timelines and among them is Shadybug who runs into Chloe who has at least two of the following reactions.

A) goes "ok I should probably stop being a bully before I push someone over the edge."

B) realizes that Marinette is Ladybug (perhaps because Shadybug revealed her own identity to Chloe with the intention of killing Chloe right after)

C) a gay awakening

A common issue with ML powers seem to be how much weaker the Fox, Turtle and Bee, and even the Cat, seem compared to Butterfly and Peacock.

As in, even if we skip the whole "Peacock creates actual life" thing. We all know that these two can give powers equal to Cataclysm (Copycat), Mirage (Volpina), and for example Lady Wifi's power can immobilise you just like Venom and in addition she can do a number of other things.

The Ladybug knockoffs such as Antibug and Sentibug don't actually count because they apparently can do only Lucky Charm, while what makes the actual Ladybug so powerful is the Cure aka Miraculous Ladybug power.

This inspired multiple authors of ML AUs, reimaginings and fanworks introduce additional powers for the "unfortunate" Miraculouses, which is probably the best solution - it fits the idea of abstract concepts in the base of Miraculous power system, characters not using some if these powers yet can be explained by it coming with experience, and it would even be allowed by canonically debuted in Season 4 idea of experienced users inventing new extensions to their powers. (@zoe-oneesama made an especially notable use of the latter, suggesting ideas for different users getting different additional powers for their Miraculous, in that case the Bee)

Just a quick list of these interesting additional powers ideas I encountered:

Fox (Illusion):

Seeing through disguises (discarded idea for @kari-go 's AU)

Shapeshifting (@theytistic ; the same AU also makes the Mirage equivalent stronger)

Showing images of past events (@zoe-oneesama 's suggestion for Rena Rouge to fight for the truth)

Turtle (Protection):

What sounds like focusing the impact of attack on the user and lessening it (@kari-go)

Invulnerability like the canonical Ox power (@theytistic; same AU also makes the Shellter equivalent much more versatile)

Water manipulation (@zoe-oneesama's suggestion for Carapace)

Bee (Subjection):

Breaking enchantments on people (@zoe-oneesama 's idea for Bee!Marinette, @theytistic)

Mind control (@zoe-oneesama's idea for Queen Bee, @kari-go)

Plant manipulation (@zoe-oneesama for Vesperia)

Slowing people down in a range (@kari-go's discarded idea, @theytistic's version of new main power instead of Venom)

Cat (Destruction):

Cure of the same level as Ladybug's (apparently same in @kari-go's version, differently functional but same level of strength in @theytistic's)

Other destruction-based powers in addition to Cataclysm, compensated by new creation-based powers for Ladybug too (both of the above AUs, especially relevant to @kari-go's since there a number of other Miraculouses can perform the Cure as well)

To the AU authors: your work is valuable and interesting, keep up with it! Also if I misunderstood something about your version, don't hesitate to correct me.

If so, what do you think if Marinette's diary trap in Darkblade didn't worked when Sabrina snatched it for blackmail?

(What if Sabrina did get Marinette's Diary in Darkblade?)

-Everything leading up to Sabrina trying to steal her diary.

-Unlike in Canon, the Diary box trap fails and Sabrina gets the book. Surprised at the ease of it, Sabrina decides to take a peak.

-The events of Darkblade happen with one exception. Sabrina doesnt show up with the diary.

-Sabrina shows up after the events of Darkblade, where she tells chloé she couldnt find anything.

-Now this would seem out of character, but Marinette writes a lot about her life. Sabrina got a personal look into the life of Marinette.

-Sabrina saw the most personal feelings of the young girl, and how her being ignored during the events of evillustrator wasnt intentional, it was because of an akuma.

-Marinette won the class rep position, Sabrina asked Marinette if she could talk to her in private.

-Sabrina confesses that she was going to steal her diary for Chloé and ended up reading it.

-Marinette is MORTIFIED, but Sabrina assures her that her secret is safe with her.

-This naturally puts marinette on edge.

-Though for the most part, things progress as normal... Until Antibug.

-Where Sabrina ends up getting akumatized,

It's such a rare case when ml fan writers was skipping Antibug episode in the part of story. Which makes me wonder, what kind story that you want to serve in bloody bug for Chloe.

Don’t worry, I’m not pushing you to make chloe redemption and at least she doesn't looks too cartoony bully character ✌️

Y'all will see. Granted you could argue Alix is more of a bully/intimidating force compared to Chloe in Bloody Bug.

My way of ranking is different from the others', bc how on earth am I supposed to rank episodes of the show where I really love every single episode? So I decided to go the easy route and ranked them by how many times I watched them.

Disclaimer: episodes in groups III-IV aren't the worst by any means! They're all good. It's just that I don’t rewatch them that often.
