A practical and effective novel community-based TB diagnostic technology
Tumblr media
- By Nuadox Crew -
According to a new trial published in Nature Medicine, Xpert, a portable, battery-powered molecular diagnostic instrument, was able to detect almost all potentially infectious cases of tuberculosis (TB) in a community trial of over 600 people in South Africa.
The device is a low-cost solution that includes a vehicle driven by two healthcare staff, modern portable battery-powered DNA-based diagnostics, and technology to gather sputum samples even when patients are unable to generate one.
The authors believe that these findings highlight the importance of shifting to an active case finding approach for tuberculosis diagnosis, emphasizing that portable, DNA-based diagnostic techniques linked directly to care will be critical for interrupting disease transmission in community settings.

Alternative responses to the question ‘How’s it going?’ For physically disabled people:
- ‘The going is heavily assisted.’
-‘On without me.’
-‘It uses wheels’
-‘It’s not.’
-‘Against my will.’
-‘With frequent breaks’
-‘On pure spite’
-*That was a verbal question and I couldn’t hear you*
-‘We don’t have all day to go through enough medical history to give you enough context to understand exactly how it is going.’

just a reminder that if an accessibility aid would help your quality of life, then you can use it.
this goes for everything from wheelchairs and noise cancelling headphones to fidget spinners and acupuncture rings. You don’t need a diagnosis to start accommodating yourself. Especially on the mobility side. Trust me when I say that the only people who want those are people who need them. you aren’t taking resources from others you are using them as intended. you don’t need anyone’s permission to make your own life easier.

Friendly reminder that if you find yourself Not using your mobility aid on occasion, for whatever reason, that doesn't make you a "faker". A lot of us, especially new mobility aid users, do this to our detriment-- and even if it's not, and it's literally just More Convenient/Makes You Feel Nice to not use it all the time, then that's what's up. Do you. Who is anyone else to police a cripple's life? You don't owe them a performance. Live your life, damn!!
(and stop policing yourself too! If the thing helps, it helps. Period. The aforementioned performance of disability expected of physically disabled people is an ableist move used to question the validity of our disability. Fight against playing into that.)

your symptoms don't make you bad.
disabilities come with a lot of symptoms and experiences. a lot of people see these in a really negative light, or give these symptoms some sort of "good" or "bad" category.
gaining weight is okay.
incontinence is okay.
speech impediments and spelling errors are okay.
using aids that are big and loud is okay.
taking up space and attention is okay.
none of these symptoms are inherently good or bad. you are not a bad person for experiencing these things, or for sharing about them.
it is so much more than okay to exist in this world as a disabled person. don't let anyone tell you it's not
