Monkey Grass

Name: Monkey Grass / Lilyturf

Latin Name: Liriope muscari

Type: a tufted, tuberous-rooted, grass-like perennial

Plant Date: These were planted before we moved into the house

Area:

Color: dense evergreen groundcover with a grass-like appearance with lavender, purple, pink or white flower spikes.

Bloom Time: July through August

Light: deep shade or full sun

Water: very little. Let the plants dry out completely between watering to avoid root rot.

Fertilizer: little fertilizer is needed but liquid fertilizer can be used

Deadhead: You can cut back the small patches of your monkey grass using a pruning shear by using grass shears. When trimming, gather the foliage that is arching using one hand and carefully hold it from the roots and trim it off 2 inches from the soil. Try to avoid trimming the new shoots’ tips. Monkey grasses that are large can be cut using a string trimmer or a lawnmower on the highest possible setting.

Propagation: Separate the rootball. Try to ensure at least 8-10 blades with healthy roots per division.

Temp: Drought tolerant

Width: 12-18 inches

Height: 10-18 inches

Planting Distance: 12 inches

Edible: Roots, cooked. Also, candied. Root has a fleshy, tuberous part near its tip.

Medicinal: Candied tubers eaten as tonic and aphrodisiac. In China, decoction of tubers used to fortify the lungs, for coughs, fevers and dysentery. In Chinese traditional medicine, used for asthma, bronchial and lung inflammation. Used as tonic to moisten yin. Decoction or infusion of tubers used for hemoptysis, dysentery, and as emmenagogue. Candied tubers considered tonic and aphrodisiac. In China, whole plants used to treat diabetes.

I did the stair section of the Tianmu Historic Trail today and then walked all the way home, and my knees may never forgive me

Buddy buried his face in his hands and groaned. "Oh yeah, I know what it means."

Everyone else turned to look at them in confusion.

Spike and Buddy looked MK up and down, then turned to each other and nodded. "He's not a Kai," they said in unison. "He's a Lloyd!"

I think it's a pretty funny section 😄
