While trying to be descriptive when writing about Gimli, I got the idea of his anger being like lava smoldering deep beneath the earth's crust, and it's been stuck in my mind ever since.
For example, when Eómer threatens him when they first meet and slanders the Lady Galadriel, Gimli doesn't explode on him but he makes it clear that those thoughts are idiotic and Eómer is idiotic for thinking them. And he doesn't do anything more about it.
But one book later, the debate between Eómer and Gimli regarding Arwen and Galadriel comes back (and dissipates pretty quick, but still), and it seems that Gimli has just been sitting and smoldering on what Eómer had said, and only after time is he going to manifest that into argument.
So I got to likening Gimli to a smoldering fire, which could be compared to forging in the mines and I enjoy thematic consistency.
And then, I got to thinking about Legolas (because of course one leads to the other). Compared to Gimli-as-fire, Legolas is more like the wind. Goes with the flow, alights on all sorts of things all at once, seeking and searching through evening.
But get him mad and that wind is a hurricane and he is absolutely pulling an arrow on somewhat he just met in a diplomatically tenuous situation because that guy insulted Gimli-
And so Legolas is wind, or the air.
Amd a strong gust of wind can absolutely blow out a fire. And overpowering fire can burn away all the oxygen and leave no air.
BUT, when properly applied, they can build each other up. Bellows or a puff of breath can give a fire strength. Heat from fire can expand the air and send whatever is in it soaring.
And this is just a lot of rambling to say that I appreciate that, despite how different they seemed from each other, how they started out almost opposing each other because of these differences... they chose to build each other up.

Ingo is slightly dense when it comes to the topic of flirting. He's not so naive to misunderstand a direct confession but smaller, more subtle attempts at flirting usually skirt right by him.
Ask him about his day and he'd go on a tangent about the rails and battles he's had, sometimes without end or notice that you haven't said a word. Try to offer him a drink on his break and he'll accept it happily regardless of what it is, but get his coffee wrong and he will have a slightly poor response to it despite his noticeable attempts at covering his disgust. Shyly compliment him and he;ll return it tenfold out of overpoliteness.
Emmet, however, is not as ignorant to the adoration of their fans. Mostly because he is involved in some of the most debauched sections of their fanbase online (with an alias of course). He's mostly there for fun, but his true intentions are to secretly cater to their expectations during the battle subways. Someone wants suggestions for pokemon type pairings after spending weeks studying and training? Even if they lose he's going to compliment their skills on both combinations and abilities. Another wants to defeat one of them for their first run through the system? He's using his side account to offer first hand tips for surviving the gauntlet-as for surviving them (or him) they;re on their own (but if the trainer is particularly young or possibly disabled, he might throw the match slightly for encouragement).
This also, unfortunately, extends to the more risque side too. He has too many people on a list for subtle insults and jabs at failing to defeat him, solely because he knows their sins of having degradation kinks. Voice kink people aren't safe either because he sees all the comments about his flat voice being sexy (which he blushes about-but he will never say a word to anyone).
They are both, however, easily flustered over flirts. Like with his voice, Emmet gets fidgety when anyone calls him sweet. That's an Ingo thing-he's not used to it, and normally only little old ladies call him sweet instead of someone his age. He turns away and tries to cover his face with the collar of his coat when it gets too much and he's blushing down his neck at the attention.
Ingo always stutters at obvious flirting. His cap is pulled down over his eyes and red streaks from one ear to the other, whimpering under his breath before trying to calmly change the subject-which usually stops short as he tries to explain he's not being rude, he's just too flustered and doesn't know how to respond. He tries not to mention the flustered part, however, which usually leads to the redness on his face spreading slowly down his neck until steam is practically pouring out of his ears as he stammers to a stop.
When it comes to flirting, these boys need help.

Not me getting secondhand anxiety looking at the absolute chaos of this hypothetical discord user’s life based on these messages-
Tumblr media
This person is apparently
• Travelling internationally likely very soon
• Currently having homework for an active biology class
• At least somewhat present in the moderation of a server
• Actively involved in competitive sports
• Has an engagement or event currently planned (that is understandably being ignored)
Maybe I’m lazy or something but this is enough to make me curl up and die

ya know the thing is Bruce could try and pull his patented "in worried about you and instead of expressing that I'm going to pull you off of vigilante work" on Duke and it Would Not Work.
Bruce could pull him off the outsiders sure but 100% Bruce could not make Duke stop patrolling
Duke, staring Bruce's lil bat peepers down, with the power of gd and anime on his side: you could call Superman to sit on me and it Still wouldn't keep me from going out

Those stills make me feel like it’s meant to look like happy families whilst the reality is the opposite - that not all is well and Eddie is realising she’s not actually a good fit for him - he’s just gonna take a while to get there.
The neutral grey suede jacket and light tee is interesting - we don’t see him him Henley’s around her always other tees or shirts - the Henley’s are worn by Eddie when he’s his truest self his most relaxed self - around buck and the firefam (and his family family) - it was the same with Ana - he didn’t wear them around her either.
Plus Marisol in horizontal stripes - changes are coming for her so that’s pointing toward things going south - the show uses them all the time to show change coming for characters (see my metas on my pinned post for more!!)
Not to mention Chris sat between them in check - he’s literally in between them - the check is about the ‘family’ dynamic rather than Chris himself - signalling the relationship is not on solid ground - that things are gonna come to a head at some point!

Hey, want another of my so-called thinky thoughts? This one was inspired by something on the discord. This one also goes under a cut because my hand slipped and I accidentally wrote too much, lol. But anyway.
Alternate universe. Steve and Eddie have been dating for a while, and it's not a secret. All their friends and family know and are supportive. Nancy works as a server in a fancy restaurant. An uneventful job, until she sees Eddie there, seemingly on a very romantic date with... a mystery woman?
What? She's not their server, and hasn't seen the woman's face yet (which will be important later, of course), but WHAT???
She's confused at first, but that confusion quickly gives way to anger. Anger mostly on Steve's behalf. Because she may have broken up with Steve when they were young, but he's still her friend, damnit, and he doesn't deserve this. And the longer the anger stews, the more furious Nancy becomes.
Finally, after one sappy unbroken romantic gaze and delicate hand kiss too many, Nancy storms over. Risking her job to defend the honor of her friend.
"What the actual hell, Munson?!"
Eddie startles, but doesn't let go of his date's hand.
"Oh hey Wheeler! Didn't know you were working tonight." The asshole doesn't seem nervous or worried about being caught. He even smiles at her. The prick.
"Don't you 'hey Wheeler' me, you cheating jerk!"
That finally gets Eddie's attention. His face turns serious, though a bit confused. "What? I'd never cheat on Stevie! Why would you even think that?"
There's a faint chuckling from the other side of the table. Nancy ignores her for now, focusing on Eddie.
"I oughtta punch you in the balls for that, Munson. For lying right to my face. And for what you're doing to Steve."
Eddie's confusion seems to evaporate as he realizes something. "Ah, well. You see Wheeler, the thing is-"
The quiet laughter of Eddie's date becomes too hard to ignore. Nancy spins on her heel, ready to confront this giggling floozy.
"Listen here, you little slut-"
She immediately stops short.
Eddie's date. It's... Steve. But also... not Steve?
"Ah," Eddie says again, a bit sheepish. He's still holding Steve's (?) hand. "You haven't been to one of our group get-togethers in a while.” He clears his throat before continuing. “Nancy, I'd like you to meet my girlfriend, Stevie."
With her flowing chestnut locks, subtle makeup, and sparkling red dress, Stevie Harrington is absolutely stunning. And she looks more at ease and comfortable in her own skin than ‘Steve’ Harrington ever did. Nancy is entirely taken aback. Stevie's still smiling, but her smile falters a bit at Nancy's silence.
"Nance? You, uh, you okay?" She asks.
Eddie recognizes the fearful undertones of Stevie's question, and gently squeezes her hand. Letting her know that, whatever Nancy's eventual reaction is, he's here for her, always.
Nancy finally blinks, brain having restarted from one of the biggest surprises of her life. "Wuh?"
Oh yeah, real intelligent there, Nancy.
"Buh?"
Oh come on, this is just embarrassing.
She gathers her thoughts, wrestling with them as one might while trying to fold a fitted sheet, keenly aware of the look on Stevie's face. Her friend was growing more and more nervous, and seemed to be bracing herself for something. After a moment, Nancy realizes why this is, and pulls herself together.
"I really haven't been around enough, have I?" She lets her lips curve into a small smile. Stevie relaxes a bit, but still seems guarded.
Nancy's expression softens completely. "It's nice to meet you, Stevie. The real you."
Stevie's smile is so big it must hurt her cheeks, and she looks as if she might cry. "You too, Nancy."
Nancy's expression shifts, turning to shock and embarrassment. "Oh God, I called you a- Jesus, Stevie, I'm so- You're not-" She babbles, face turning red. "Oh god," she says again, hiding her face in her hands. The soft laughter of her friends is simultaneously nice and yet mortifying. Truly this is one of the most embarrassing days of her life.
Gentle hands encircle her wrists. They don't pull, or force her face out into the open. Instead, they just hold, rubbing against her skin. The soothing motion coaxes her into lowering them, and opening her eyes. Stevie's eyes are still watery, but kind. So kind. She's holding Nancy's hands in both of hers.
"It's okay, Nance. Really. You didn't know."
"Still-"
"'Still' nothing. You didn't know. You've been busy. It's not like I couldn't have called you myself, right? That street goes both ways. Besides," She smirks, "the fact that you were so willing and ready to go to bat for me speaks volumes."
"I was two seconds away from punching your boyfriend right in the dick," Nancy reminds her.
"Balls, actually," Eddie mutters, remembering all too well. He shifts his legs under the table. Stevie throws back her head in laughter, drawing a few looks from other patrons. The few that weren't watching the dramatic encounter already, at least. The three friends pay the onlookers no mind.
"I should get back to-"
"Oh!" She lets go. Nancy misses the warmth immediately. "Oh, I'm sorry. We'll let you get back to w-"
Nancy bends and hugs Stevie, who's still sitting at her table. The positioning is awkward, but even so the other woman doesn't hesitate to return the embrace. "We'll talk later, okay?"
Stevie sniffs, holding back her tears valiantly. "Okay."
"And I am NOT missing another family party ever again. Who knows what might happen next time? For all I know, Mike and Will will have hooked up by then."
Her friend giggles in her arms, and she misses the knowing look that passes between Stevie and her boyfriend. Eddie hides his smile with a lock of hair.
She pulls back. Stevie smiles at her, makeup holding strong despite the lone tear that manages to escape. Nancy reaches over and wipes it away. "You look beautiful tonight, Stevie."
She blushes. "Thank you."
"But I really do have to get back. I'll see you two soon. Have fun on your date!" With one final wave, and a smile, she heads back into the kitchen. Every so often, she glances back, seeing them exchange flirty looks, gentle touches, and once, a kiss across the table. It's lovely, and everything she knows Stevie deserves.
On one of these glances, Stevie actually looks her way. She smiles. Nancy smiles back. And wonders, for the dozenth time that evening, what other big developments she might have missed happening in her little group of friends.

One of the things that has me so invested in The Locked Tomb series is that it's got such a vibrant and active fandom. I just want to take a moment to appreciate the fact that some thick, not technically YA novels with no current visual adaptation has the fandom it does. I'm proud of all of you. That's really fucking cool. And FUN!

The stitch up
Finally have a minute to re watch episode 4. Rambling below
Love Fagin and Jack covered in viscera in Gaines’ carriage with his wife. “My colleague and I were burying a cadaver” A+ excuse Jack, totally explains why you aren’t wearing pants.
I didn’t notice just how clear it is that Lady Jane is the real governor of the colony. Don’t love her as an obstacle to true love, but I Stan a powerful smart lady.
Hetty is a queen. “All right! Time to check your rose bushes” while she makes the rounds in the brothel, then single handedly loads Rotty in a cart to haul her to the hospital. Also ignores Sneed and gets Jack when it’s clear the first surgery didn’t work.
When Belle goes to observe the surgery Sneed suggests that the surgical theatre is too gory for her and that she should read to the patients instead “some of them can barely read”. Cue pointed look at Jack. I didn’t pick up on this the first time.
Belle also tells Jack that her father paid for Sneed’s medical training! Talk about having connections.
Jack is soooo baby soft when Belle offers to help him. His eyes change. It’s perfection.
despite hating Jack, Sneed still defends him when Gaines is looking for reasons to arrest him. More reason I love that pompous git.
Seriously, there’s not a filler scene anywhere in this series.
Gaines trashes Jack’s room and threatens him with handing and/or flogging to death. Jack has JUST had this very hopeful conversation with Belle and here he is on his bed holding the trampled remains of his signature top hat - the Dodge dilemma. How can he hang it up permanently, and does he want to?
“sniffly Sneed” 😂
dodger hat back on when sneaking around the governor’s yard to find Belle. “We don’t pay for cadavers. We just… borrow them”
11 o’clock cadaver date is the hottest thing Belle has ever heard.
I love Tim and I love how he loves Red.
Fanny is so excited by the idea that Sneed’s medical knowledge will make him a good lover. Yeah…
Jack the savant surgeon - eyes closed in concentration. Lovely.
Jack is illiterate clue 2: he is so unsettled at the idea of being found out he just nopes himself right out of the situation and leaves Belle in the operating theatre at presumably midnight or later. Lol.
“the white ghost who’s close to his grave” should be my new tag for Fagin
Red is so fucking cool
Feels like a very deliberate choice for Belle to let her hair down when she joins Jack in the surgery. Maybe because of the conversation with Fanny about going for it? (Finding love with Sneed?). Also how did Belle know to be there? Tim says they can do the second surgery because Sneed left the hospital. Did Jack just have her hiding on standby? Was it a coincidence? I don’t care - she looks gorgeous.
lots has already been mentioned about the Hetty/Jack/Belle situation but I appreciate the framing of this scene with the three of them - both women assisting in their own way, and both necessary to Jack’s success.
Belle seems genuinely taken aback when Jack is so abrupt with her when the surgery starts, but her relief when she helps him in the end and he smiles at her is so sweet. She is basking in that smile - I don’t think I realized how fast she fell for him. (Of course they start arguing about publication and the moment passes)
“I shall be turned around as a curiosity” - some more insight into Jack’s insecurities.
Lady Jane: “Have you been alone with the surgeon?” Belle: “There’s always another body in the room” 😂
What time is this dinner starting? 2pm? It’s so bright!
love Sneed and the prof arriving in a carriage while Jack walks up in his Navy uniform.
Note to self: research the siege of Sevastopol.
Ah! Jack describes his time as a naval surgeon as “nothing more than butchery” to Lady Jane. Those words sting all the more when she uses them against him later.
Fanny and Belle are both terrible at flirting. Belle can’t stop interrupting to talk up Jack and Fanny can’t stop staring. “I love soup”
I also love how Jack is SO UNCOMFORTABLE with Belle praising him at the table. She’s not lying, but her embellishments are so unnerving to him. “Really, it’s nothing” - but she just. Can’t. Stop.
Jack really is trying. He takes responsibility for Fagin not knowing what the plan is. He tries to fit in. Seems a bit harsh to snap at Belle but she was terrible at reading his cues - like this is her surgical theatre and he has to defer to her expertise. It’s too vulnerable for him.
“I AM rare!” Have i mentioned how much I love the ladies in this show??
Jack’s little voice crack when he blurts out “I CAN read!” And then a little softer “I can read, just not very well”
All her talk of teams and partnerships - she really did bet on him. All in.
”You can take the boy out of East London but you really shouldn’t”
”Belle will never speak to me again” right before taking Fagin’s share of the money and heading to the card table
whew! Gold star if you got this far.

Just for the funzies of it. What is your favorite Shen Yuan trope?
Personally I like Huli Jing SY (there isn't enough words to convey how much I want to eat and gnaw on that trope)
I'm also a fan of "competent but chooses to be stupid" SY
Oooh idiot savant Shen Yuan is a favorite—not obfuscating stupidity to hide his competency but only competent in certain areas—beasties, puzzles, anything his brain can gnaw on, but anything else he’s lost at sea.
And Runaway Bride Syndrome is my other favorite—even in aus where he acknowledges his feelings for the other person, the moment he’s forced to act on them, boi’s gone. Not sure if his commitment issues could stem from his subconscious still telling him ‘this world is impermanent’ or his fear of growing attached only to die all over again (and get transmigrated to a different world and being forced to start the nightmare (and a new life) all over again)

The X's!
Tumblr media
How could I have missed them!
Tumblr media
This unused artwork is called "MushroomShrine". In it Sozo's body is marked with an X and so are some signs that were probably meant to warn people away. I know it's Sozo's because it's found in his sprite files. This is the same symbol on the smiley mushrooms! Both of them!
A sacrifice chosen…?
This is evidence that there was/or is a greater cult, outside of Sozo's, that worshiped or served menticide mushrooms! It could be Heket's but keep in mind about the old faith's treatment of non-follower. Either she was secretly fostering a heretic faction or a new cult formed right under her nose. One that worshiped the addictive nature of menticide mushrooms! A sign that the bishops control over their domain was slipping? The age of a new god had begun…

Everyone talking about their opinions re: Din's possession of the darksaber and his development (or lack therefore) and I wanna talk to so
Ever since he got the darksaber at the end of s2 I've been firmly in on the side of "Din should be Mand'alor", which was a topic the fandom seemed pretty evenly split over. A lot of people got hung up on his personal distaste for leadership and while I understand and see that I STILL think he was the best possible choice to be the new leader. And imo the show spent a ton of time reinforcing that!
Din IS a great leader, whether he likes it or not. He's calm under pressure, he's a fantastic negotiator, he's well versed in the ways of many different ways of life and cultures, and he's honorable yet flexible, I could go on and on. I also think narratively, at least as far as we got in mando s1-2 and tbobf, he was being set up as someone who could be the bridge between the more traditional mandalorians he was raised with and the rest of the scattered clans.
Din's personal journey was so fascinating. At least until S3 dropped the ball, it seemed like we were heading into a really interesting exploration of Din as a symbol of growth and change. His growth from a relatively sheltered personal existence to one that was shaped by all of his new experiences in protecting and raising Grogu and meeting all kinds of new people was one that I thought foreshadowed his becoming a great leader for his people.
There was so much room at the end of S2 to explore Din's changing relationship with his faith and Creed. Even the developments within tbobf added some really potentially amazing facets to that with the possibility of redemption existing within an old Mandalorian legend.
His journey to Mandalore should have been the bulk of S3, continuing with the adventure-of-the-week format, but peppering in more Mandalorian culture as Din learns more about himself and begins teaching Grogu about his adoptive culture. I've never been in favor of Din giving up his devotion to his Creed, but I have been thinking a lot about him altering his relationship with it and I think a tight focus on his struggle with figuring out this new perspective in light of everything that has happened to him so far would have been really emotionally rewarding.
And to wrap that all up with his eventual arrival on Mandalore could have been beautiful and epic. Finding the planet ravaged but not inhospitable to life, wandering the ruins of the city, and then finding his way into the mines to the Living Waters. Finding not a dark dank cavern with a museum plaque, but a sanctuary protected and preserved from the bombing of the surface by the sacred metal in its very foundation.
He walks into this beautiful place at the end of his journey, redemption for his sins right there within reach, and he reflects on what it means to be Mandalorian. Not the definition he was always taught, but what is means to HIM. What it will mean for his son. What it will mean for his scattered people.
And he does go through with the ritual bathing. He recites the Creed just as he did as a child, he walks into the water, and he doesn't feel much different for it. There's no big a-ha moment, no bright light shining down on him, no mythosaurs dragging him down, it's all a little underwhelming after all he's been through.
But as he's floating there, much more dressed down than he ended up being in the show, letting his vision adjust to being without the helmet, he notices there's murals all along the walls. The history of his people all laid out in brilliant color. Stories he's never heard, victories and defeats, heroes and villains, war and peace. His people were once mighty. They could be again.
And maybe he's STILL on the fence about it all, even after this experience. And it's not until he's drying off and watching Grogu splash in the shallow water that he realizes it's not about whether he wants to do it or not. Just as it wasn't really a choice to save Grogu from his fate, it's not really a choice to save his people. To revive their culture and their planet and bring everyone home again.
JUST imagine his speech that he gives to his covert but in the context of bringing their children home to live and play under their own system's sun.
The thing about Din is, from the get-go, he's a protector. He's a guardian, he's a caretaker, he can't help but want to help. A season devoted to further exploring his relationship with being Mandalorian and how that translates to his eventual decision to lead his people would have been sooooo so so good. I am literally always thinking about this and all the lost potential. He wouldn't even have had to STAY Mand'alor for this to work. He could have accomplished what he set out to do and then quietly stepped down and left the politics to someone else (NOT Bo-Katan, I still don't see any reason why she should be allowed anywhere near the throne after how much of her own fault it was the planet was lost in the first place, especially since she's clearly not interested in confronting or even admitting her guilt)
Like. Literally every fan theory I've seen about what S3 could have been is 100x better than what we've gotten. I have to believe its intentional sabotage at this point because no other explanation makes sense. This could have been an absolutely AMAZING season if it had followed up on any of the plot points it spent two and a half seasons establishing.
):
anyway id love to hear your theories and what you would have done with this season given the chance! Tell me your thoughts!!!!
