PASSING movie trailer... Starring Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson, based upon a novel of the same name written by Nella Larson and published in 1929. This is interesting because Hollywood's golden age had a mini-genre based on this subject, "tragic mullatto" films, which most often starred white women to make the parts more sympathetic, i.e. Pinky, Imitation of Life (both versions), and Show Boat. Only one of these movies actually had a black actress star. This is a tough subject that touches upon some of early roots of colorism, as there were black people who "passed" into whiteness post-slavery to escape systemic racism, and to more easily attain privilege and social mobility/status. (Not so) Fun Fact: Ty Burrell of Modern Family fame found out his own ancestors did this and I think it's possible that Steven Tyler's black ancestors did the same (both did ancestry shows). Rebecca Hall, who is an actress who has passed in many white parts during her acting career, adapted and directed this as a passion project and to better understand her Detroit-born mother.

what does “gracile med” mean? are these racial groups?// Those are terms used to categorize people in latin american countries by skin tone/ethnic origins they're not races. Mestiza means you have a mix of indigenous and Spanish origin so you have indigenous looks, Castizo is when you have majority european/spainish origin usually white looking, Mullatto is when you have a mix of african and european/spanish origins so afro-latino. Gracile med means you have more mediterranean origin.
