Rules—share the inspiration/s for the magic system in your WIP

Oh lord.

For inspiration... I'm a lifelong fantasy reader and fantasy rpg player, so it's a little hard to single out.

I can credit the Zodiac Academy books for the way my elemental magic usage has expanded, and Brandon Sanderson for his lovely rules of magic and my desire to attempt a hard magic system (at which I only partially succeeded).

There are two magic systems in the Shattered Series world (which includes Hidden Depths, my tumblr whump story)

Elemental and a separate, structured magic system.

Elemental

This is used as more of an ability inherent to each race based on which elemental god parented which species. Which I, for a long time, declined to think of as magic, but while it may be normal for each respective species... it's totally magic 😅

This is my soft magic system. There are *some* rules, but not many, and they are fairly malleable, which suits me for this particular world.

I can't really point to a specific thing that inspired the creation of this system. I think I just don't see a lot of elemental magic outside of weather magic, and I wanted to play with that. The books I mentioned above were helpful in the ways that I could have the elements used.

Elements used are: air, water, fire, earth, and aether

Magic

This was my attempted hard magic system. Users are mages, and manifest their magic somewhere between adolescence and early adulthood.

As for what's included... I kinda took a mix of things I like, healing magic, mind magic like telekinesis, protective magic, and just built a class for each thing and gave it rules. I've been told it's very reminiscent of rpg video game magic, which uh, *looks at my two vague inspiration claims above*, yeah, sounds about right lol.

Anyways, I would say it ended up as more of a medium magic system, if that's even a thing lol. There are... interpretations of the magic rules that aren't explicitly written, which I do follow, but aren't. Written. So, uh. Yeah.

I do try to update them if they change XD

The system is under the cut, in case anyone is curious... it's super long, fair warning lol

Magic/Mages

Magic comes from an internal Source. A person becomes a mage by Manifesting, which is when the Source becomes available for use. The Source is akin to a pool of power/magic that matures over the course of a few years after Manifestation. Humans, Seraph and Fae can Manifest magic.

Magic is usually genetic, but can appear spontaneously or be granted by Reyanel, the god of magic. Magic is separated into classes. Classes are separated into levels, depending upon the amount of power available and achievable abilities. Higher-level abilities use more power than lower-level abilities.

A mage may choose to train or apprentice with another trained mage or may attend a school of magic. There are no more schools in the human realm.

Manifestation of Magic

Magic commonly Manifests in early adulthood, but rare cases of Manifestation in adolescence or middle age have occurred.

Manifestation causes a glowing ring to form around the iris of the eyes, which can last for up to two days. The color of the glow indicates class.

After Manifestation, a mage's eyes will glow when using their magic. The strength of the glow is dependent on how much magic is being used. A low-level ability uses very little magic, and the glow would be mostly undetectable. A high-level ability will produce a glow strong enough to light up a room.

Magical classes

Abilities within class vary depending on strength of Source. Rarely does someone have access to more than one class.

Level 1 and 2 mages are largely self-taught. A higher-level mage will need guidance to learn how to use high-level abilities effectively and safely.

Level 3 mages have Sight

There are varying strengths within each class. A mage could be classified as a weak level 2 Architect. This mage would have access to level 2 abilities, but wouldn’t have the stamina (amount of magic) available that a strong level 2 architect would have.

Mages with Sight can See a glow or aura indicating class around other mages. With more concentration and direct contact, a mage with Sight can determine a mage’s level as well.

Any level mage can channel magic to others of the same class to augment another mage’s strength, although the other mage cannot access abilities they do not normally have access to. This is easier within the same class, or between certain classes.

A mage with multiple classes will have a layered glow/aura. Each class will have separate Sources and levels.

Ex. An Empath Healer can have level 5 healing abilities with level 3 empath abilities

Healer – green aura/glow

Level 1 – affinity to plants, ability to infuse a small amount of magic into specific plants (unlike human ability growth, which has an area effect), helping them grow faster and be more effective, heals self of minor illness or wounds faster than normal

Level 2 – ability to infuse remedies with power, making them more effective (healing brews)

Level 3 – ability to See and heal minor ailments, gain magical Sight

Level 4 – ability to heal self of moderate illness or wounds, ability to heal more complex wounds or illness of others

Level 5 – ability to heal major wounds/illness, even fatal ones if caught quickly, ability to harm others with healing magic

*Healers have innate desire to practice their craft, can sense when someone in their proximity needs healing

*self-healing can occur without the healer actively directing it or with active direction if trained.

Empath – yellow aura/glow

Level 1 – ability to sense surface emotions of others

Level 2 – ability to sense deeper emotions of others with physical contact

Level 3 – ability to transmit/affect emotions of a small number of people, ability to sense deeper emotions without physical contact, gain magical Sight

Level 4 – ability to distinguish truth from lie, ability to transmit emotions/affect emotions is stronger and can affect more people

Level 5 – ability to see memories and heal emotional trauma, ability of compulsion

*Empaths abilities often activate (link to the Source) without conscious effort. High emotions in an empath activate a link to the Source automatically. Empaths especially need extra training to control this response.

*Even without accessing their Source, Empaths are more sensitive to the emotions of those around them.

*Level 5 empaths feel compelled to work in a healing capacity, similar to the Healer compulsion to heal.

Architect – orange aura/glow

Level 1 – ability to infuse normal items with magic, making them stronger

Level 2 – ability to manifest small items from magic, like cups, utensils, bricks

Level 3 – ability to manifest larger items from magic, like pipes, clothing. Ability to infuse items with magic (normal items or magical items) to give them a specific function, ex. Globes that glow with light, a series of pipes that run hot or cold water, items that can retain heat or cold, communication items. Gain magical Sight

Level 4 – ability to manifest larger items from magic, like furniture

Level 5 – ability to manifest larger items from magic, like buildings or bridges

*Items manifested magically are stronger and shimmer

Artificer – red aura/glow

Level 1 – ability to create reservoirs for magic, ability to channel Level 1 abilities into an artifact

Level 2 – ability to channel Level 2 abilities into an artifact

Level 3 – ability to channel Level 3 abilities into an artifact, gain magical Sight

Level 4 – ability to channel Level 4 abilities into an artifact

Level 5 – ability to channel Level 5 abilities into an artifact

*Artifacts are magically created by the Artificer, can take any shape or size, and can be used by anyone

*Reservoirs can be filled with energy from a mage’s Source to be used for later. The higher the level of Artificer, the stronger the reservoir.

*Architects' magic cannot be channeled into an artifact

Kinetic – purple aura/glow

Level 1 – ability to levitate small objects with magic

Level 2 – ability to teleport small objects with magic

Level 3 – ability to levitate larger items or people with magic, gain magical Sight

Level 4 – ability to teleport larger items with magic

Level 5 – ability to teleport self, distance related to strength of Source

*Levitation of items related to Source strength, the higher the level the heavier the object the mage is able to lift, the higher the level the longer the mage can lift something (depending on weight)

*Teleportation distance of objects related to Source strength, the higher the level, the farther the mage is able to teleport the item.

*A Kinetic cannot teleport live cargo. A Kinetic cannot teleport other people or animals. However, an Artificer can make an artifact with Kinetic power that can teleport live cargo.

Guardian – blue aura/glow

Level 1 – ability to increase strength and endurance

Level 2 – ability to heighten natural senses, sight, hearing, etc.

Level 3 – ability to increase natural healing speed, gain magical Sight

Level 4 – ability to create a magical shield to protect self/small group from harm

Level 5 – ability to create a larger magical shield to protect self and/or others from harm

*Guardians have a strong sense of right and wrong. They have a natural inclination to protect and can sense when protection is needed.

Magical Replenishment or Suppression

Replenishment – Time will replenish, although less time is needed if the mage is well fed/well rested. Exposure to a race’s natural element will speed replenishment (humans-earth, seraph-air/wind, fae-magic). Can also use shibella, an herb ground then mixed in any liquid for replenishment. No specific taste but does cause a tingling sensation on the tongue.

Suppression of aura – Something to suppress aura/eyes lighting up but still able to use abilities. Orbenith, a mushroom found in underground cave regions, ground into a powder and mixed in liquid or chewed whole. Side effects include nausea, brain fog, mood swings, some users may experience some difficulty using abilities. Side effects decrease with repeated use.

Suppression of abilities – Something to suppress abilities altogether. Canthite, a mineral recently discovered in the mountains of southern Elysia. Can be used in a variety of ways.

Permanent suppression of abilities – appeal to Reyanel, god of magic, to pass judgement upon misuse.

Cost of using magic

Using too much power (all at once or over a long period of time) causes fatigue, headaches, nausea, fainting

Using all the magic in the Source leaves the mage drained. Trained mages will stop using magic right before this happens, as draining the Source can cause extreme weakness and can sometimes lead to extended periods of unconsciousness.

Mages can train to continue functioning after draining their Source, but only the Guardian class have been very effective at managing it.

✨My personal tips on casting curses, just in time for the holidays✨

You can curse someone with injury without cursing them with a specific disease or disability. Don’t be a pompous asshole who presumes to control nature- instead, curse people with stepping on legos, with constant itchiness, with self doubt and dangerous decision-making.

Try to personalize your curse to your target. If you don’t know enough about them to know what would hurt them personally, chances are, you probably shouldn’t be trying to curse them.

It’s best if your target knows they’re being cursed. You don’t have to do this directly, you can send nightmares or other signs to them so they’ll know even if they can’t “prove” it. Half of a good curse is the fear of being cursed!

But please, please be careful if you have to remain in contact with your target, don’t put yourself in a dangerous situation just to curse someone.

Curses can be temporary or permanent, and can be reversed. We all make mistakes sometimes, and magic is generally forgiving. However, you need to be ready to deal with the consequences of your actions.

Please remember, this may not apply to your practice exactly as it does to mine. That’s okay! Learn what works best for you, and happy cursing!

My work boots are the most expensive shoes I’ve ever owned.

Also the most comfortable. I chose them after trying on several different brands and comparing lifespan vs usage vs comfort - I needed them for a physically demanding job, not the weekend hiking trails. I could have easily chosen cheaper boots that would have lasted long enough to be worth their low price, but I know the Sam Vimes Boot Theory and knew weaker, less comfortable boots would make my life harder in the long run.

So when the outside edge of the heel started wearing down after three years of heavy use I went to the shop I got them from and said “hey this is a common problem for me with how I walk but now it’s affecting my ankles and knees and I don’t wanna have to buy a new pair, is there a way to fix this?”

The salesman at this very fancy upscale boot store said “oh yeah, there’s a shoe repair place that can give you some heel guards - it’ll keep the rubber from wearing out.”

So at 8am this morning right after my 9hr shift ends I went to the shoe repair shop and it is the most hole-in-the-wall, is-this-a-real-business-or-a-mafia-front, am-I-gonna-get-shot tiny cinder block cube I’ve ever seen in my life. I grew up plenty poor and love me a good hole-in-the-wall business, but going from upscale store to this cash-only repair shop gave me whiplash. Wasn’t expecting this when a guy who wears three piece suits to sell boots said it’s the best place to go.

The skinny kid behind the counter looks somehow 16 and 25 at the same time, but when I tell him this place was recommended he smiles and says to hand over my boots. I hand him the vaguely warm foot-smelling boots, and stand in my socks in the 3’ square entryway surrounded by every color leather polish you could buy and watch as he turns my boots around in his hands, sizes up a crescent moon bits of plastic, and unceremoniously hammers tiny nails through them before handing them back.

The heels are perfectly level again. I can walk without almost rolling my ankles. They don’t clack loudly on the pavement or feel different. This is gonna fix my knee pain. It cost $10.

This kid had every tool he needed within arms reach, worked fast and smoothly, I was in and out the door in less than 8 minutes, and it only cost $10.

I didn’t think anything could cost only $10 anymore. I’m so used to hyperinflation prices I was spiritually thrown back to the 1400’s visiting the cobbler in town square. This kid might have been that cobbler and just decided to never die.

I’m still reeling from the whiplash, and gobsmacked at the price, and thrilled I didn’t have to go buy new, worse work boots (cuz I don’t have that kind of money for a second pair, I’m expecting these ones to last a decade) and it feels like I just experienced one of the rare little chunks of magic that floats around our world.

Magic with no K

I don’t write “magick” in my practice because I find the distinction between “real magic” and “fake/fictional/sleight-of-hand” magic demeaning and ignorant.

A quick hand and a clever distraction can be just as magical as a pool of salt water and an assortment of your favorite crystals.

Fictional magic is a reflection of our perception of reality, to ignore how fantasy is engrained in historical magical traditions is to deny the magic of our ancestors.

There is nothing that separates my magic from the magical folklore Tolkien and JK Rowling stole from, except that I do my best to acknowledge my sources and not commit violent acts of cultural appropriation.

Plus, very often the same people who write magic with a k also write terfy stuff like womyn and herstory. Yikes.
