Yet, Henry VIII never expected that his son’s death would cause a religious crisis. Edward VI and his Council…

1553-Nine Days' Queen
The attempt to install Lady Jane Grey as Queen of England collapses after only nine days.
Lady Jane Grey (c. 1537 – 12 February 1554), later known as Lady Jane Dudley (after her marriage)[3] and as the "Nine Days' Queen",[6] was an English noblewoman who claimed the throne of England and Ireland from 10 to 19 July 1553.

Day Nine
I started all of my classes today with a discussion about Queen Elizabeth II’s life and death. I played this BBC clip, read the statement from President Biden and the First Lady, and opened the floor for any comments and questions. My seniors expressed their thoughts about how significant a 70-year reign was, and how much the world had changed in the Queen’s lifetime. My freshmen asked what the British monarch’s role is, about how succession works, about what the period of mourning will look like, that sort of thing, and one mentioned seeing a post-9/11 news clip of the Star Spangled Banner being played at Buckingham Palace. He hadn’t known the Queen had asked the guards to do that, and he asked me if I remembered it happening. I confirmed that I did- it was shown on the news here, of course- and told the class how touching it was at the time.
After everyone had said what they wanted to say, I went on with my usual lessons. In GOV, I had students read two recently passed laws pertaining to education in NH, and the NH DOE’s guidance on those laws, to give them an understanding of how policymaking at the state level impacts their lives (one law’s the “divisive concepts” law, the other makes passing the US citizenship test a graduation requirement). I asked them what they thought about both laws, and I started to get a bit more participation than I’d been getting in past classes. The Principal dropped by while we were talking, so I asked him to weigh in as well (yes, I totally put my boss on the spot, that’s what he gets for walking into GOV, haha). Then I had students go on the General Court’s website, pick a bill that’s currently going through the House or Senate, and prepare to tell their classmates about it and whether or not they’d vote for it next class. They really came alive for that assignment. Also, I had two people share with me later in the day that they’d heard good things about the class from my students.
So that felt awesome.
World went really well, too. I had students continue to practice research and citation by finding out some more information about some topics related to Warsan Shire’s Home and, more broadly, to conflict and migration: the use of child soldiers, the Mediterranean Sea refugee crisis, la bestia. They could find out anything about those topics, and then they had to write it in their own words, cite it in-text, and make a works cited page for all their sources. Some of them were blown away by what they learned because they had no idea, while others were familiar with some of the information. It’s interesting how varied their knowledge of the world is, but that makes for some cool class discussions.
Oh, and my advisory was fun today, too. We’ve been chatting since day one about the school’s expectations for behavior, its goals for graduates, that kind of thing, and today we went on a tangent about college since all of these students are planning to attend. We were talking about the importance of developing good communication skills, and problem-solving, and I mentioned how important self-advocacy is in college. I added, too, that the experience is going to be totally different from high school and totally different from what they’re expecting. It’s hard to articulate how it’s different, exactly, but I told them that in a year they should remember I’d said it- like, “Ah, Miss M was right!”
So, basically, I’m saying today was a really good day of teaching, which is nice everyday, but it’s especially nice on a Friday. Headed into the weekend with all the positive vibes!
