bug biomass load will be filled
Every environment has a "bug biomass load" that load could be a diverse collection of species or it could be all American Roaches. It's up to you!
If you use general poisons you are killing the ants, the isopods, the beetles, the flies, the spiders, the centipedes. Most spray poisons aren't targeted. They have to be extra strong to kill the poison adapted Roach.
Baits are better, not ideal. Even better is environmental management. Eliminating the places and foods that attract the unwanted guests while supporting or being neutral to the wanted ones.
A basement w/ spiders, centipedes & ants will not be as welcome of a place for roaches.

Stage Play: My Old Friend
i've been here more than 2 years now and gone deep into the tags a decade back. but i've never seen anything about Two of Us 2.0: My Old Friend, a stage play by Stephen Larsen imagining a final meeting with John and Paul on November 5, 1980.
here's the summary:
The play begins on November 5, 1980. John Lennon, alone in his apartment at the Dakota in New York City, is at a crossroads. He has been having recurring dreams of death and is ready to make big changes in his life, that is if he can summon up the courage. Just then, who should appear, unannounced at his door but Paul McCartney.  The two haven't seen each other for about four years.  John is both glad and a bit wary at the sudden appearance of his old friend.  Can they mend fences? Can they come together? Or they forever doomed to be bound by the strands and complications of their shared history?
here’s a copy of the script.
it packs a lot of bug lore into a few acts (probably too much for a general audience) and leans a bit exposition heavy to fit it into J&P conversation (assumes they haven’t talked most of the decade but then they start bearing souls). the dialogue is an acquired taste, and it commits the Two of Us sin of making paul more normal for the sake of plot and using him to talk through to john. it also leans into very dark territory by the end (tarot reading with jayne mansfield among other things), which is probably tough even for devoted fans.
but it notably features some very J&P moments complete with goons humor, spontaneous bursting into song, and wild tonal shifts that are very them. it's funny then that the most authentic bits are the ones that make me doubt it could ever be adapted right to the stage. at least not without a devoted group producing it.
would have made a good fanfic though. it's especially poignant after Now and Then's release, even if i am a bit skeptical about the timelines (the idea john and paul didn't see each other for 4 years, that the fall 1980 meeting was out of the blue, time of writing Now and Then, etc.). with the biopics back in discussion, it's worth taking another look at it.
this script was read onstage in holmdel, new jersey in 2018. did anyone attend the script reading?
more importantly, has anything been done with it since?

🪰Every 17 years when the weather warms, periodical cicadas become a news event. East of the Great Plains in the northern U.S., millions of seventeen-year cicadas (Magicicada septendecim) burst forth from the ground. Why this mass emergence? It’s an effective adaptation that allows these insects to overwhelm potential predators. But sheer numbers shouldn’t lull cicada fans into complacency, for the insects do face stressors, particularly ongoing forest habitat destruction and pesticides. For now, research into the actual numbers and population dynamics of periodical cicadas is more important than ever. 📸The Museum's latest special exhibition Extinct and Endangered: Insects in Peril, opens TOMORROW, Wednesday, June 22! It will feature uniquely powerful macrophotography by Levon Biss (@levonbiss), highlighting 40 incredible but imperiled species from specimens in the Museum's world-class research collection, including the seventeen-year cicada, in large-format photographs, some as large as 4.5 by 8 feet! Link in bio for more details. Bring the Titans back to NYC, I’m begging. When a new Titans comic was announced I was hoping it would lead them away from being shoved in with Dick. But now they literally just have a Tower in Blüdhaven.

I have convinced Kevin to keep an open mind about moving back to Miami (we’d have to rent for at least a year and he’s not keen on the idea).
I just don’t want to experience pregnancy + PP so far away from my family again. I have a strong feeling that after my allergy test, we’re going to start trying. However the results come out. Sky will be 3 next month and I’d really like her and baby to not be more than 4/5 years apart. This may be her only sibling and I don’t want such a big age gap.
If Kevin and I are WFH, Sky can go to my Mimi’s sometimes or obviously, be in daycare or school of some kind. If we could live anywhere, it would probably be Barcelona at this point. But I can’t do that to my Mimi. Or to myself. I won’t be isolated again from my family for my whole pregnancy / birth / PP.
Do they drive me nuts? Yup. But they’re mine. I need them in this part of my life.
Whew. We’d be looking to move in October if we end up going through with this. I wonder what we will decide 😅

The more I learn about light pollution harms insects, the more I want to try to help... do something about it. But I live in NYC. It feels like an impossible ask. A whole city devoted to making the most light pollution possible.
I strongly suspect that we'd see a greater variety of wildlife if we could dim the light a little.
Just using colors like red light can help. So can dark hours and motion sensors. What if one day, as a treat, every New Yorker got to see the milky way?
Tumblr media
Most people doing light pollution activism are working in places like national parks & deep in the country, places that are almost dark, where the lights are encroaching especially as the cost of very bright LEDs keeps falling: companies and municipalities say "why not? what's the harm?"
The harm is vast. So many creatures need the night to live. Maybe humans need it too. We do, at least, need those creatures.
I care about insects most. But if you don't consider: no bugs, no song birds.
Is reducing light pollution in a big city a hopeless cause? Is it better to focus on those once perfectly dark places being lit up?
One positive of making light pollution an issue in a big city is how it would raise awareness. Imagine if, in the small hours of the night the lights slowly shifted red. Lights with motion sensors that slowly gutter out. You can see NYC on the horizon glowing like a bomb went off for miles, that glow could dim a bit, give the stars a chance to shine.

what i have learned so far living in florida is that the bugs may be plentiful but they are stupid as fuck. zero self-preservation skills in their tiny minds.
