Happy Blorbo Blursday!!!! I loved the snippets and art of Sashka and Peony from The Hunger Rot!! Is there anything else you'd like to share about them? Any trivia? Their dynamic? More about their eventual development together? Whatever you'd want to gush about!! 👉👈❤️

hello @jess-p-edits !! *throws roses at you* so one of my favorite character dynamics is two people who absolutely refuse to get along - clash of values, weaponized worst traits, conflicting goals, petty bickering, relentless tooth-and-nail types - and i love watching these characters grow alongside one another. Sometimes these dynamics encourage the characters’ most poisonous traits (also fun), but sometimes they inspire change.

When Peony and Sashka first meet, they’re both in their prime and both worse for it. Peony is dangerously stubborn - three hundred years set in her ways, she feels no sympathy for any variety of vampyr, carries most conversation with her broadsword, and prefers only her sister and her horse for company. As a Marrow, her life and purpose revolves around the Hunt. Sentiment is for fools, the past is for ghosts. Peony is perfectly content to die this way. Sashka is quite different - at the height of her power, greedy for more, and arrogant enough to chase it. Insistently selfish, she would (and has) lied, cheated, and killed to get her way. Sashka aims never to die at all. 

But a century after their first clash, Peony and Sashka meet again, and this time they’re both suffering a deep wound. After losing her sister, Peony is left utterly directionless. Once steadfast and self-assured, all her values cave inward as she succumbs to the void of loneliness. And Sashka is being blackmailed by her sire. Despite centuries of spilled blood and sacrifice, she’s still powerless, an eternal pawn climbing an unending mountain. Why did she ever bother to climb at all? Both are lost to venomous futility.

The story begins when Sashka approaches Peony with a fool-hardy plan of revenge: help me murder my sire. Peony still finds Sashka reprehensible and carnivorous, but she’s resigned herself to die. Might as well go out swinging her sword around. According to Sashka, there’s only one artifact capable of destroying a vampyr powerful as her sire... Sashka, of course, has an ulterior motive, but it isn’t quite what Peony expects. As they journey to find this artifact, they bicker through the day and tell secrets long through the night, they battle ghouls and beasts and bandage each other’s wounds, they taunt each other endlessly for one more step, one more step... and eventually, Peony and Sashka inspire each other to change. Grief suffocates, failure haunts us, but love is the strength behind our breath (corn spills from my pockets)
