As Christmas Eve wends its way towards midnight, it is always strange for me to contemplate a holiday that means nothing to me, is the focus of a religion I have no part of, and seems to demand a giant tithe to the god of overspending and useless commercialism. I revile so many aspects of the holiday and yet...

And yet.

I love the warmth of the glow of the lights (my tree has the same lights we've had since I was born - they turned fifty with me this year); the nostalgic timeline of ornaments collected over the years as mementos of whims, friends, family, and moments to treasure; the smell of the kitchen churning out recipes that are only made at this time of year; the fact that so much of our frenetic, fast-moving lives coasts to a stop, a cessation of forward momentum until capitalism rears its head again and Boxing Day Week fucking MONTH starts and everyone tramples each other for more deals for more shit no one needs... fuck there I go again, sorry. I am getting old and I rage on my porch sometimes.

Forgive me my moments of crotchety frustration. What I am trying to say is:

Merry Christmas if that is what this holiday is to you, happy holidays if it is something else. Be warm, be safe, may you find yourselves surrounded by love near and far, and I hope you have a moment to draw a breath and enjoy the pause, the liminal space lit by the glow of contentment before we dive back in again.

Here in this space, where we come for escape, for community, for reassurance... be well, be loved, be safe.

anyway my most spiciest political take right now is so many people are showing how easy it is to lash out when they are feeling helpless, or to believe in a villain they can defeat on a smaller scale than the way the bigger wheels of the world are grinding beyond our reach, because they want to be able to do something, anything, even though that can be propaganda in and of itself, and it makes you lose track of the power of kindness and aid and support in our hands that we can do.

I think the biggest thing people can do is log off, not offline entirely, but log off the platforms where people are screaming at each other just because things feel so fraught that they have to scream and having a target lulls you into feeling like it is productive, and reach out to whoever it is you DO want to help, and ask them what you can do. financially, volunteering, labor, prayer, therapy, buying phone cards, whatever.

it's not as emotionally cathartic as feeding into your own self righteous indignation by fighting strangers on the internet, it won't lie to you and tell you that you're singlehandedly making somebody across the world bulletproof or neutralizing somebody's weapon, but it is better, because it will be the truth that you need to hear, and agency over not the smallness of your limitations, but the actual span of your reach and your capability to help beyond wishing to be superhuman and hating yourself for not being that.

#if you are religious a lot of holidays at this tine of year are about miracles of smallness of survival of impossible odds and humble work #oil holding out for one more day and one more day and one more day #a slaughter of children and children of children but even two teenagers running away and escaping with an infant is a blessing #light scraping away at the hollow of darkness in winter and yule as the promise of having enough enough enough to survive and see the spring #it is not your duty tovsave the world. it is your duty to save yourself and to save the person next to you if you can. #and then another and then another. #solidarity is good. solidarity forever. but what do you have beyond ideals? who do you know? and who knows you? #log off of twitter and grow that. cultivate that.

deeply despise how the internet has made "i dislike these few aspects of a work i otherwise really enjoy" feel equal to "i hate everything about this work and it's the worst thing ive ever seen". having media literacy and the fundamental ability to criticize your darlings is good actually we all should do it always

#just off the top of my head there are multiple things about the many video games i like that i have Big Problemos with #the disconnected feeling of bg3's final act and cut content locking a companion character out of a 'good' ending #like a dozen different things about ak up to and including some character designs and gameplay aspects that are objectively shitty #the entirety of the ul'dah-related plotlines in heavensward. wtf do you mean nothing at the end of arr mattered and democracy is useless #im gonna fucking kill you #anything about world of warcraft beyond the mount/pet collecting and exploration aspects of the game. like literally anything. forever. #complaining about your favorite things is poggers as fuck actually #yin-thoughts #the only perfect video game ive ever played is hatoful boyfriend and even then im kinda meh on the sequel's choice to be an anthology #rather than a straightforward experience like the previous game. like i love The King dont get me wrong but it's weird #that the first two chapters of holiday star's 'main plot' are like #entirely disconnected from arguably the biggest part of the game and its reason for existing. just an odd creative choice

ok so like. totally random question but does anyone know what the windmills in mondstadt actually do?? like... it would make sense if they were out in springvale, or somewhere with farmland, where they would logically be grinding up wheat, but they're just sort of... in the city? it seems a lot of the lighting is oil/gas/what have you (and i feel like it wouldve been mentioned if they were powering the city through windmills).

like i guess they could be decorative and a statement piece, but what a strange thing to have in a place like a capital city?? like we get it, yall got wind, but like... this is just...... weird? What Is The Point??
