I have some stuff in the works but nothing that's ready to be posted this week haha. it's going to be a busy month for me... here's a lil summary of what I'm working on rn.
upcoming:
my website should be getting my march/april sketchbook and a music page within the next couple weeks!
mermay collab adoptables ;)
moon jellyfish kiss pages (as always)
window to worlds piece (though you won't see the full thing till the zine is out)
some half-baked zines I'd really like to finish
"ooops I think I accidentally just started some kind of vtuber group"
possibly opening commissions later in the month (had a week off work with covid last month and it would be good to make up the pay I missed... just under £300 worth hhh)
art that I can't post (I'm nearly at the 1500 files mark!! I draw so much more than you will ever see)
and also starting to prep for event/s! (going to be tabling at prideCAF again + if I'm lucky I'll get into the local zine fair as well)
I think that's everything? I've been a little stressed trying to keep all that in my head, feels good to have it all written out ^^

Visual Novel Fest - Steam's attempt to show good will to VN devs
Tumblr media
it's August 14th, 10AM CST as I write this, just a couple hours shy of the end of the first Visual Novel Festival held by Steam. I want to take a look at how sloppily this event was handled and how I hope (but doubt) things will change in the future.
Steam has realized since the start of Covid that, because they have the monopoly on PC gaming, they can and should go further with promoting games on their platform. when all of the gaming events were canceled in 2020, Steam took this as an opportunity to launch an idea they most likely had on the back burner for years-
festivals.
these festivals are events hosted on Steam where games that are submitted (and accepted) are promoted on the front page of Steam, a highly coveted spot for developers. these events are all themed like the puzzle games fest or the visual novel fest or the now multi annual steam next fest which features a variety of demos.
to put it in layman's terms, Steam now hosts festivals because they (are supposed to) give a big boost in visibility to games on their platform, a lot of which that will be discounted and sell a lot more copies than on normal days. developers want to get into these festivals because of this added visibility and increase in sales. it's a win win for both groups.
so now, in August 2023, we find ourselves at the Visual Novel Fest. for context, I have been an indie visual novel dev for almost a decade and have been a verified Steam developer for 5 or so years. Steam has held various VN-themed sales and such (namely publisher sales, like Sekai Project's occasional publisher sales) but not a festival just for visual novels. this is a wonderful chance for us indies to get a tiny bit of extra visibility, as selling VNs is hard!
the first problem- we can't get in.
festivals on Steam are opt-in. these themed sales are limited to games that can fit the themes, but these limits are put on the backend- that is, to say, only games that their Algorithm determines should get in can get in.
we think that this Algorithm checks for tags- if the mystery games fest is coming up, it sends out an email to games that have the "mystery" tag on it as games that can enter. however, this system is... it's broken. it's just broken. it was broken for the horror fest, it was broken for the mystery fest, and oh god was it broken for the visual novel fest.
lots of indie visual novels that were properly tagged as "visual novels" with the tag as one of the top tags for the game were never emailed about the fest. instead, we had to reach out to Steam and file an appeal.
these appeals took several weeks.
I don't know of any devs who submitted an appeal that were denied, but it is quite frustrating to have visual novels that are clearly visual novels not be invited to the festival and then have to wait several weeks before someone accepts the appeal.
but once we got invited to the fest, it was all blue skies from ther-
what do you mean they overpromised on features
Steam does additional promotions for their festivals on social media and such, namely making a trailer for the festival that gets shared to a lot of people- there's a lot of eyes on this trailer and they create it from games invited to the festival.
Steam reached out to several western developers and localizers about being featured for this event, including a visual novel I worked on. these features were much more stringent and required us to do more, such as requiring our games to be on sale during the fest (for normal submissions to fest, discounts are not required but encouraged).
one thing some of us skipped over, though... their wording was specifically "we may feature your game". not that they will feature the games that they specifically emailed and followed their stricter requirements, but that they may.
but I'm sure they'll pick some great representations of the visual novel mediu-
what do you mean the walking dead got featured
Tumblr media
(click through this embed to find the video)
Steam had emailed several developers of actual visual novels and instead went with the cash grab option since they realized most VNs don't make money and decided to throw the "visual novel" part of the festival out the window.
the real kicker- the walking dead shouldn't have been allowed into the festival by Steam's own guidelines.
Tumblr media
in the eligibility guidelines for the visual novel fest (edit: this page is now defunct because I guess they deleted it now that the fest is over??), they specifically mention that games that allow players to free roam will most likely not be eligible.
a ton of actual visual novels weren't invited to this event but don't worry, an interactive game without visual novel elements got featured.
so how did the festival go?
let's talk about the actual fest now.
Tumblr media
the walking dead pretty much stayed at the top of categories for the entire festival, overpowering actual visual novels like ace attorney, steins;gate, ai: the somnium files, clannad, and many, many more.
Steam uses sub-genres to help players find more specific types of games easier, but very, very few of these are actually useful for narrative elements as they're mostly geared towards gameplay elements.
on the left is genres and on the right is sub-genres on Steam that were used as tags on games entered into the fest. as you can see, these fail to let players easily find the kinds of visual novels they might be interested in- what if I specifically want to find fantasy yuri? or boys love with trans characters? by in large, these tags are meant for gameplay oriented software, not narrative oriented software like visual novels.
Tumblr media
Steam attempts to remedy this by adding categories on the page that has similar games together, but these ultimately fail because of how few there are.
first we have detective as a category. not too bad.
Tumblr media
next is psychological horror and puzzle. again, not bad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
after that we have dating sim. most of these look to be dating sims by both the more traditional term (dating sim = a stat raiser with romantic elements) and the broader Western version (dating sim = romance game with multiple routes). I haven't played these specific ones so this is just a cursory glance.
Tumblr media
we also have an otome category, wonderful! I wish these categories had a description underneath them, as if we want more people to get into visual novels then they need to have a way to learn these terms easily- "otome" does not immediately tell you "this is a game intended for women where romancing men is typically the goal", so I wish they had included some kind of descriptor for non-VN players glancing at the fest.
Tumblr media
last but not least, we have the lgbt+ category- wait that's it?!
Tumblr media
yes, those are the only categories highlighted as part of the festival, 3 of which are mystery game-oriented. want queer games, games with lesbians, games about trans experiences, and more? they're all in 1 category despite the wide array of queer visual novels on Steam.
it's extremely sad that one of the most diverse mediums out there always gets pigeonholed by Steam and the gaming community as a whole time and time again. I had good hopes for this festival but it was an extreme let down.
some developers I talked to were able to get a fair amount of visibility from this event, some barely hit more than average views. I hope Steam fests continue to evolve and Steam will expand their sub-genres, but I don't have much hope that they'll be half as good as itch.io's searching functions.
yes its time to shill itch.io
have YOU browsed the indie darling site itch.io recently?? why not??
itch.io is a website for sharing and playing indie games. it's completely free to use, easy to find games you might like, and pretty versatile for devs who might want to sell games, DLC, digital content, and more.
want to find visual novels that are dating sims with female protags and queer? that's easy to find!
Tumblr media
want otome visual novels that are only about an hour long? here you go!
Tumblr media
want visual novels for windows that are cute and have multiple endings? there's almost 200!
Tumblr media
itch.io has a much, much wider range of tags that can be inputted by developers and allows you to search for platform, price, average game length, accessibility features, and more.
Steam will probably never be toppled as the place to get PC games unless they drive their company into the ground, but that doesn't mean we have to settle for it. there are other platforms we can find new indie visual novels and it feels like we're on the edge of a visual novel renaissance for localized VNs on consoles.
so yeah that's my recap of what I've seen from Steam's messy visual novel fest. you can find my own visual novels over here, I make queer games with a focus on fantasy. I also work at Studio Élan, an indie studio making yuri and other lgbt+ focused games.

[CN] MLQC Season 2 Chapter 54 Translation (Lucien's Route - Part 1)
⚠️  SPOILER ALERT  ⚠️
This post contains a VERY HEAVY SPOILER for the chapter that has not been released in EN yet! Feel free to notify me if there are any mistakes in the translation~
Tumblr media
"Speaking of which, if there's a beautiful dream, would you like to stay in it with me?"
"A beautiful dream? Is it the kind where I don't have to go to work every day?"
"More beautiful than that—it's a dream where we can always be by each other's side."
Translation under the cut!
Previous Lucien’s chapter -> [Here]
[Background Info]
Please read Lucien's previous chapter first before this chapter jnsnjsdjd. Lucien might feel OOC if you don't.
Long story short, although the world already diverted from its original path of heading toward destruction caused by a comet, now the world is ascending to the fourth dimension and the rifts are the manifestation of it. The boys' each route is basically how they deal with it.
About me dividing it into parts- the S2 Chapter 54 is FULLY translated and released at once. Just for fun, I divided it like this so you can also choose and get bad endings just like in-game~
[Chapter 54-1]
Tumblr media
In the office, I occasionally hear birds chirping outside as if they are singing in celebration of the arrival of a new day.
I type the last Enter key in the document, click the save button in the top left corner, and take a deep breath.
A client I've been pursuing for a long time finally showed interest in collaboration yesterday. However, they also presented additional requirements, requesting a draft proposal by noon today.
I'm working overtime with my colleagues, and we've finally put together a decent draft.
I asked Anna to send the document to the client's contact person and I massaged my sore shoulder.
Beside me, Kiki suddenly leans over and shakes her phone.
Kiki: Boss, I just discovered a hidden gem of a beverage shop! I heard their best-selling hot chocolate is especially delicious. Do you want to order takeout together?
MC: Sure, send me the link to check it out~
I open the store page, and the cover features promotional image of their best-selling drink. However, the packaging looks a bit familiar.
=Flashback Start=
Tumblr media
Lucien: On the way to your company just now, I happened to come across a newly opened beverage shop.
Lucien: The staff recommended this "Orange Hot Chocolate", and I thought it might be to your liking. Do you want to give it a try?
He hands a steaming paper cup into my hand and passes on his warm scent with it.
MC: Wow- it's delicious! It has the refreshing fragrance of oranges and is quite sweet. But I can't keep something this good all to myself~
Tumblr media
I raise the paper cup and bring it to him, Lucien bends his eyes to a smile and lowers his head. His hair gently falls amidst the dense steam and----
=Flashback Ends=
The sweet warmth from the memory gradually surfaces at the corner of my lips, and I shake my phone at Kiki.
MC: I'll pass for now; I suddenly remembered I have something to do and need to step out for a bit. Go ahead and order; it's on me!
As I speak, I walk towards the exit and pick up my phone to send a message to that person in my heart.
Tumblr media
MC: "Professor Lucien, are you still in? I'll come over now to see you~"
Lucien quickly replied with two voice messages, accompanied by a sticker of a little fox looking dizzy while doing experiments.
Tumblr media
Lucien: I just finished a task, now I'm pondering on how to capture a photo of the scenery outside the window that hints I miss you a bit.
Lucien: But I'm happy because you'll get to see it in person soon.
I reply to him with a smile while briskly walking in the direction of the beverage shop. I can't help but feel that this year's winter isn't as cold as it seems.
MC: Hello, give me two cups of "Orange Hot Chocolate," please.
Clerk: I'm sorry, but we just ran out of the ingredients for that beverage this morning. Can I offer you a different flavor instead?
MC: ...Oh, okay.
Feeling a bit disappointed, I point to the "Rich Winter Hot Chocolate" on the side of the menu.
MC: I'll go with this one.
The clerk starts preparing the drinks and hands me the two cups after a moment.
Clerk: Please be mindful of the cup's rim, it's hot.
MC: Okay, thank you.
I instinctively reach out, my gaze still fixed on the phone screen. With a muffled sound and liquid splashing in my peripheral vision, I abruptly snap back to reality.
Tumblr media
MC: ...Oops!
I frantically try to catch the fallen cups, but it's too late.
The newly changed shirt takes the brunt of it, and the little mochi* beside me isn't spared either, now adorned with unsightly brown stains.
[T/N: The little mochi is a keychain that Lucien gave to MC in the last chapter]
MC: …..
Frustration and speechlessness well up within me. I impatiently grab tissues to wipe it, but the effect is minimal.
So, I quickly ran to the restroom, wetting the stained areas with water. Despite my persistent efforts, hot water successfully turned a few drops of chocolate stains into a large light brown patch.
Looking at my disheveled reflection in the mirror, I take a deep breath.
Forget it, who cares! Lucien won't mind anyway. Thinking so, I hastily walk out, only to be tripped suddenly—
I manage to grab onto the wall, preventing the third mishap of the day.
MC: ….
Why does it feel like I've been a bit unlucky since leaving the office...
Suppressing my dismay, I push open the shop door, and the cold wind hits me as the wet clothes turn stiff.
Without thinking, I quicken my pace. Let's just walk faster, get there a bit sooner, and see the person who can soothe all my irritations.
Fortunately, the way to the Bioscience Research Institute is smooth.
The elevator carries me up, and when the door opens, a somewhat familiar voice reaches my ears.
Tumblr media
??: ...So, you want to activate it again.
It's Cyril's voice... How could he be here? I freeze when I see Lucien standing in the corridor not far away from Cyril.
Tumblr media
Lucien: This is a necessary step to obtain the results.
Tumblr media
Cyril: May we both achieve the worlds we each desire.
Cyril says this as he walks past Lucien towards the direction of the elevator. When our eyes meet, his cold gaze blinks, seemingly surprised.
Cyril: Didn't expect to see you here.
MC: ...Shouldn't I be saying that?
I can't help but make a sarcastic remark, but Cyril doesn't answer my question. Instead, he takes another step in my direction and speaks calmly.
Cyril: Have you made a decision about the matter I asked you last time?
Our conversation in the jewelry store flashes through my mind. I look into his clear eyes and shake my head.
MC: I still need time to consider.
MC: After all, the world in the dream is false. If there's another solution, I don't want to choose this method.
Cyril nods, his expression as calm as ever.
Cyril: I understand.
Cyril: But if you delay further, you might fall behind.
Fall behind... what does he mean?
I'm slightly taken aback. Before I can ask, Cyril has naturally walked past me.
His slender figure, accompanied by unhurried footsteps, quickly disappears into the elevator.
MC: Why does he never make things clear...
I glance back from Cyril's departing figure, and when I look up, I see Lucien walking towards me.
His gaze inevitably falls on the large stain on my clothes, then slowly moves to my face.
I thought he might ask what happened or say something comforting, but he just smiles lightly and speaks.
Tumblr media
Lucien: I smell the scent of hot chocolate, but it's different from the previous one.
I blink in surprise. It’s as if the earlier worries have suddenly dissipated and I take a step closer to him.
MC: It's the Rich Winter Hot Chocolate~ from the same shop as the "Orange Hot Chocolate" you brought last time.
I open the bag, watching as Lucien takes out one cup and uses his other hand to push open the office door.
Meanwhile, a researcher comes out from behind the door. As they pass each other, Lucien's hand holding the cup inadvertently shakes a little.
The cup tilts ever so slightly, and a few drops of hot chocolate splash onto his cuff.
Tumblr media
Lucien: Hmm... This is troublesome.
He walks into the office and fixes the glasses on the bridge of his nose in a slightly distressed manner.
Tumblr media
Lucien: I'm not very good at dealing with these stains. Can you help me think of a solution?
He says it quite seriously as if facing a challenging problem. I can't help but laugh, feeling a softness in my heart.
The little thoughts I keep to myself never need to be explicitly stated; this person always understands them.
MC: Of course. But I just learned from personal experience that you shouldn't use hot water.
MC: Unexpectedly, both Professor Lucien and I are getting a bit of chocolate "favor" today.
Lucien: Hearing MC say that makes this small trouble seem kind of cute.
We exchange smiles, and he raises the cup, gently tapping it against the one in my hand.
Lucien: So, before dealing with it, let's toast to these cute little troubles today.
-
[Chapter 54-3]
Tumblr media
Following Lucien's footsteps, we enter the laboratory deep in the corridor. Unlike the usual laboratories filled with the smell of disinfectant, the air here is surprisingly fresh.
Lucien skillfully takes several bottles of reagents from the shelf and places them on the table.
Tumblr media
Lucien: If you want to deal with stubborn hot chocolate stains, there are actually many methods.
Lucien: The reagents in front of us can all address our current predicament at a molecular level.
MC: But using them to clean up little chocolate spills, wouldn't that be a bit wasteful?
Lucien: How about considering it as conducting a fun little chemistry experiment?
His words create a cascade of ripples in my heart, and I can't help but laugh, pretending to roll up my sleeves and stand up straight.
MC: Well then, Professor, please give me instructions~
The transparent bottles and jars in the laboratory reflect the cold light from the overhead lamp.
Under Lucien's guidance, I pour the reagents into the beaker, submerging the little mochi treated as the "experimental subject".
Its originally dull fluff becomes damp, and soon, a faint color begins to emerge.
MC: It works quickly!
Lucien: After all, it hasn't been stained for a long time. As long as we target the lipid-soluble pigments appropriately, solving it is not difficult.
After confirming the results, we also took care of the clothes stained with the hot chocolate spills.
I inadvertently turn my head and see a few scattered experiment documents on the nearby table.
Tumblr media
MC: "The possibility of transferring perception through neural links"... Is this your recent research direction?
Lucien's gaze sweeps over the proposal, placing the stirring rod on the dark rubber tabletop.
Lucien: It's... a kind of unexpected gain.
Lucien: In a recent neuroscience experiment, we discovered a similar phenomenon, but it has been temporarily set aside for now.
My gaze lingers on the obscure experiment documents for a moment, then turns to Lucien's composed face.
Thinking about my recent overwhelming matters, I can't help but let out a "sob".
MC: Darn it, how come I don't have a brain that can multitask problems like yours...
I mutter wearily, and Lucien immediately strokes my head.
Tumblr media
Lucien: (chuckle) It seems there is indeed a challenging problem troubling our Great Producer.
MC: Absolutely, a super-sized problem!
MC: I need to absorb some of Professor Lucien's intelligence energy to make my thoughts clearer too.
I rest my head on his shoulder, rubbing against it, and hear a soft laugh by my ear.
Lucien turns towards me, pulling me into his embrace.
Tumblr media
Lucien: If that's the case, then you can absorb a bit more.
I "hmm" in agreement, and after a moment, I lift my head, looking at Lucien with a feigned look of grievance.
MC: Professor Lucien is so cooperative; he doesn't think I'm silly, does he?
Lucien is slightly surprised. He places a hand on his lips, his voice carrying a clear sense of amusement.
Lucien: Miss Producer, if you think like that, you're unfairly judging me.
Lucien: What I meant is, there's still a troublesome future waiting for us.
I lock eyes with Lucien for a moment, only then realizing he's referring to the troubles we faced in the rift before.
Being captured in the glass chamber in NW, the chaotic escape during the pursuit... scenes after scenes flash before my eyes.
After a moment of silence, I let out a deep sigh.
MC: Oh no, let's just not talk about this for now. Let me be an ostrich a little longer...
MC: Dealing with the troubles at hand is already more than enough for me to handle.
I suddenly pause in my words, realizing something.
MC: Lucien, what if there are other troubles in the world at that time point? Would NW not have the time to deal with me?
Tumblr media
Lucien: For example?
MC: For example... I recently saw a terrifying vision.
MC: Our world will face countless disasters in the future, and everyone's lives will be in ruins.
Thinking about those devastating scenes, my voice unintentionally carries a hint of gravity.
Lucien: Is this what has been troubling you these days?
I nod with a hint of distress.
MC: I really want to find a solution, but I have no clue where to start.
MC: How could these disasters suddenly happen out of nowhere? I always feel like there's a missing key link in the middle.
The steady breath falls by my ears, Lucien seems to be thinking seriously, and after a moment, he speaks.
Lucien: Perhaps I can help you find that link.
I instinctively look up, inquiring with a hint of surprise.
MC: Do you already have an idea so quickly?
Lucien: Because the question you mentioned aligns perfectly with my previous hypothesis.
Lucien: Let's go, I'll take you to the laboratory.
The quiet corridor echoes with our footsteps. After turning several corners, we arrive at the entrance of a hidden laboratory.
Lucien raises his hand and enters something on the keyboard on the wall. Accompanied by a series of beeps, the massive door slowly opens before us.
Tumblr media
After passing through several rows of intricate instruments, a wall of glass comes into view, enclosing a white, sealed space.
A rift silently stretches across a corner, its edges faintly shimmering. I observe for a moment, then hesitantly speak.
MC: Why do I feel like the shape of this rift is somewhat familiar?
Tumblr media
Lucien: Because a few months ago*, we used it to enter NW.
[T/N: refer to what happened in the previous chapter]
MC: It's been so long, and it hasn't closed yet?
I murmur in surprise, but thinking about the recent influx of submissions regarding the prolonged duration of the rift, I decide not to inquire further.
Just out of curiosity, I turn my head and look at Lucien beside me.
MC: Is there a specific reason it was deliberately moved here?
Lucien: No, it just has an unusually long duration, no different from other regular rifts.
MC: So, do I need to do anything? Should I use CORE to close it like before?
With my previous experience, this doesn't seem like a challenging issue for me. However, Lucien shakes his head.
He then picks up a small glass orb-shaped device from the lab bench.
Tumblr media
Lucien: This time, our goal is not elimination but addition.
MC: Addition? It can't be as simple as figuring out 1 + 1 equals 2 to find the crucial link, can it?
I blink with a bit of confusion, but Lucien doesn't seem inclined to provide further explanation, a mysterious smile playing on his lips.
Seeing him deliberately keeping me in suspense, I clear my throat and pout, then take the device from his palm.
MC: Alright, I'll listen to your explanation later~
I exhale deeply, invoking that familiar power within me once again.
The device in my hand trembles slightly. I lift my head seemingly in response. I look expectantly at the rift behind the glass.
The next moment, it suddenly enlarges before my eyes.
-
[Chapter 54-5]
The rift expands without any warning, like a wound suddenly torn open, stretching out before me and Lucien.
I pause for a moment, unable to help but softly exclaim, "Wow," swiftly turning my head to look at Lucien.
MC: Lucien, its area expanded so much in just an instant!
Tumblr media
Lucien: Well, it seems our "addition" has worked.
Lucien: With this, perhaps the link you're looking for will soon appear.
As Lucien speaks, his inky eyes slightly narrow, there's a hint of cunning in his voice.
I lock eyes with him for a moment, unrelentingly leaning closer to him.
MC: No more teasing! What's the connection between this experiment and the "critical link"?
Lucien takes the instrument from my hand and places it back on the lab table, looking at me with an unhurried look.
Lucien: This experiment shows that the impact of CORE on the rift is actually bidirectional.
Lucien: Apart from closing, it can also trigger the expansion of the rift.
I contemplate his words for a moment, then ask with a hint of confusion.
MC: But what happens after the rift expands?
Lucien: The change in area is just the most apparent manifestation. In reality, the energy within the rift is also expanding.
Lucien: Once it surpasses a certain critical point, it spontaneously seeks a more suitable "outlet", no longer manifesting catastrophically.
Lucien: This way, the situation you're concerned about won't occur.
[T/N: Not gonna lie, I'm not sure how to explain this one except that it's similar to how the stars turn into a supergiant and then white dwarf once it runs out of fuel lol. Or once the rift is big enough it'll let go of the energy less chaotically. Anyway, it's just sci-fi don't think about it too deeply]
The question that had troubled me for a long time was resolved so casually. I blink my eyes, feeling a bit surreal.
MC: ...Is it really that simple?
Lucien: The essence of this issue is not as complicated as it may seem.
Lucien: But if the lady wishes for a more convoluted approach, I can certainly give it a try.
MC: No need! I trust Professor Lucien's discovery, of course~
The heavy gloom that shrouded my heart finally reveals a glimmer of hope. My tone lightens involuntarily, and with a touch of anticipation, I speak.
MC: What do we need to do next? I'll do everything I can to help~
Lucien's gaze shifts to the window, seemingly lost in thought for a moment. He changes out of his research attire and opens his mouth with a light smile.
Tumblr media
Lucien: I do have an invitation.
Lucien: Next, let's go and see the snow.
After a simple drying process, I hold the small mochi keychain that has regained its fluffiness and whiteness. I follow Lucien down the stairs with light steps. As we step out of the Bioscience Research Institute, I blink in surprise.
Tumblr media
Countless delicate snowflakes silently dance in the air—this year's first snow has arrived so quietly.
The snowflakes gently blanket everything around in pristine white.
I can't help but raise my hand, catching a few falling snowflakes. Lucien looks at me, and his eyes seem to soften a bit.
Tumblr media
Lucien: You look particularly happy.
MC: Of course~ I've been looking forward to a scene like this for a very long time.
MC: This time last year, I was running around in a time loop, searching for dark matter...
MC: There was never enough time, and I never had the mood to stop and appreciate this scenery.
MC: Until spring arrived, we never had the chance to quietly watch the snow together.
He tightens his grip on my hand. Lucien seems to follow my lead, tilting his head upward, quietly gazing in the direction of the falling snow.
A few delicate snowflakes land on his eyelashes, softly melting away without a sound.
Through the warm night, I hear his gentle voice.
Tumblr media
Lucien: (softly) Perhaps… this belated snowfall is a gift for us now.
The fine snowflakes soften the features of the person before my eyes.
As the snow gradually intensifies, pure white flakes float down from the distant sky, quietly tinting the boundless night in serenity.
Reluctant to part with such fervent snowfall, we return to the car.
Lucien casually turns on the radio, and light music immediately fills the car. Accompanied by the swirling snow outside, it feels like a scene from a crystal ball.
I rest my head on Lucien's shoulder, gently rubbing against it, unable to help but murmur with emotion.
Tumblr media
MC: So beautiful... it's like a dream.
The sounds of the evening breeze wafting in through the window crack resembled a delicate and subtle white noise. The fatigue from staying up all night last night gradually surfaces.
The phone screen lights up for a moment, and the digital clock shows eight in the evening. I let out a gentle yawn.
MC: I can't believe I'm tired at this hour... blame it on the recent excessive overtime.
Lucien shifted, allowing me to lean more securely on him, and he spoke in a gentle tone.
Lucien: (in a very, very gentle tone) Have you been tired lately?
I nod and lazily begin counting with the fingers resting on my knee.
Tumblr media
MC: I'm exhausted... there's a ton of tasks at work to push through, and I also need to figure out how to save the world.
MC: It either keeps me tossing and turning in insomnia or gives me a night full of nightmares.
Lucien: (gently) What kind of nightmares are you having?
I vaguely recall for a moment and make an exaggerated gesture.
MC: I've been snatched away by a dinosaur this big—
MC: And I've been flattened by this many project proposals—
MC: But you know~ After waking up, as long as I see the messages you send me, all those dinosaurs, all those project proposals, seems like nothing!
Lucien: (chuckle) Mm... I've had that kind of dream too. I wonder if the dinosaur that snatched us is the same one.
Lucien gently squeezes my hand, a hint of uncontrollable laughter in his voice.
I imagine the scene and can't help but burst into laughter as well.
Lucien: (laughs softly) Silly, next time, come knock on my door before you get snatched away by a dinosaur.
The snow outside falls gently, and Lucien speaks amidst the delicate melody.
Tumblr media
Lucien: (murmur softly) Speaking of which, if there's a beautiful dream, would you like to stay in it with me?
MC: A beautiful dream? Is it the kind where I don't have to go to work every day?
Lucien: More beautiful than that—it's a dream where we can always be by each other's side.
MC: If there's such a thing I'm willing to dream it for eight lifetimes!
A low chuckle comes from above my head. His voice quietly melts into the night breeze, sounding like a casual sigh.
Lucien: What if I say, I hope never to wake up from this dream with you?
MC: That sounds good too. As long as I'm with you, anywhere is fine…
I blink my heavy eyelids and hear a soft laugh beside my ear. A warmth covers my eyes that I find a bit hard to open.
Lucien: (whispers gently) Get some sleep.
Lucien: I'll make sure to wake you up.
—--------------------------------------------------------
Winter seems to have truly arrived after that night's first snowfall.
With the dropping temperatures, a layer of frost forms on the branches along the river and roadsides. The news on the streets gradually shifts to reports about snow and cold prevention.
I pull my gaze away from the lengthy red light outside the car window and engage the handbrake.
The rift continues to quietly spread, casting shadows of various sizes throughout the city.
However, for some reason, the popularity of news related to the rift is steadily decreasing, and the submissions on this topic are dwindling.
Perhaps people have become completely accustomed to these rifts. Despite some lingering confusion, I do feel a sense of relief.
The green light in the middle of the road lights up, and I put away my phone. After turning a few corners, a spacious bridge suddenly appears before me.
...Strange, there were so many cars just a moment ago. How did it suddenly become so empty?
A hint of confusion creeps in as I carefully survey the surroundings, finding nothing unusual.
As I drive onto the bridge, I suddenly feel the wheels slipping. I instinctively hit the brakes, but the road in the rearview mirror shows no signs of anomalies.
Just as I fall into bewilderment, the throttle gauge on the dashboard spins violently.
The tires emit a harsh, squeaking sound as they uncontrollably move forward.
MC: What's happening...?
Before I can grasp the situation, there's a distinctly audible sound of shattering beneath the car. The next second, the car suddenly plummets.
MC: ....!
I struggle to push open the car door, but the resistance of the water turns my efforts into futility.
No matter how hard I pound and shove, the door remains steadfast. Only the icy water keeps pouring in through the window crack.
The air inside the car diminishes, and I strain to tilt my head upward, closing my eyes in a somewhat desperate attempt.
The world before me gradually fades into darkness.

Asks Compilation 16/10
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The old finale of SBaHJ. (201?-201?) Gone, but not forgotten.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Homestuck is SBaHJ #55. Dave's trying something new this time.
Tumblr media
Honestly, spam away. It's become a lot more easier to handle asks now that I'm doing them every weekend.
WTF, SBaHJ historians rewriting history!
Tumblr media
Well if that ain't absolutely perfect casting. Grey's Mandy would be a perfect Rose, and honestly, her Azula is a pretty flawless Vriska.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of these ideas for Dave's modus refer to him dealing with arbitrary restrictions - and I have talked before about how Dave seems pretty good at working within Sburb's.
The Tree Modus is harder to untangle, though. Trees are such a general symbol (and John's the one with the apple symbolism), and as a data structure, they're awfully abstract. The fact that she calls it elegant when it's obviously as janky as all the others is a good metaphor for her own feigned elegance, though.
I do really like the idea of analyzing people's modi, so I'm going to keep doing it.
Tumblr media
[ this is actually true, I didn't know! it was announced in April 2021 apparently, this is what you miss when you stop following the fandom 😂
"In early 2020, Hussie officially left What Pumpkin to work on new projects unrelated to Homestuck. In the time since, they completed a new project called Psycholonials. The final chapter of this visual novel was just posted today, and is available on Steam and mobile platforms. While Hussie still retains ownership of the Homestuck IP, they decided last year to fully discontinue their creative involvement in any future Homestuck projects, and instead plans to continue independently developing more projects like Psycholonials." ]
No kidding?
It's kind of weird to be liveblogging the heyday of a comic which has essentially been orphaned by its author. It's a little sad, to be honest - it means that eventually, I'll run out of original Homestuck material, and there'll never be any more. Well, what can ya do.
Tumblr media
The worldbuilding, of course, I'll love, but it'd also be fascinating to read a deconstruction of a fandom I was never part of. Maybe I'll try to reverse-engineer what the fandom was like from the fic itself.
Tumblr media
I'm building up a proper list here! I'm going to have to make a page for it on the blog, I think, so I can compile my recs.
Tumblr media
We know he's not really omniscient - and so does Terezi, actually - but it seems as if Vriska completely buys into it. I'd still call it an assumption, but it's a completely reasonable one, given the circumstances, and especially given that he's trying to mess with her head.
It's interesting, because if Vriska really believes he's 'never wrong', then how could she possibly expect him to lose at Battlefield-chess? Is she just that competitive? Why am I asking a question I already know the answer to?
Tumblr media
Shit that's good. I'd love to get my hands on a compilation of these ship names.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh, I actually didn't catch the pool reference! And it's funny that someone whose name alludes to the Father Of Lies claims never to lie...
So that's the scratch explained, but what about the doc? He sure ain't healing anyone, and the 'omniscient' have no need for research.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The table actually kind of makes sense, since he wears an enormous, green, rectangular-looking coat. It's also fuel for my half-serious 'Felt megafusion' theory - all the cueballs are in the pool table at the end of the game, after all.
Tumblr media
Yup! Hass (I presume) knows how to name 'em.
Tumblr media
If it helps, Notepad++ is what all my initial notes go into as I liveblog. In a way, it is a wertsearch application!
Tumblr media
Hell yes! I find it weirdly complimentary that anyone would pull a late-nighter to read my ramblings. Hope the rest doesn't disappoint, and welcome to the live readers' club!

So me and my bestest friend @notanegrill began playing a game about making stories. It's called Storybook, and as the title suggests we're coming together to create the most legendary story of them all.
youtube
Tumblr media
V: *Opens first page*
Me, normal voice: "At the end of this book lies a crown-"
V: "NO! STORYTELLER VOICE!"
Me, using that one voice from the Theatre scene in 'We Were Here': "It is bestowed only to the finest storytellers of the realm."
V: "Hehe, way better."
Spoilers Ahead:
Tumblr media
So we start the world as any world begins, with a tale as old as time - Adam and Eve. Which is... Me! Me and V because I will pick his ribs clean if he doesn't 100% the achievements (he enjoys it, ok)
And we were both excited for 0.7 seconds before V hits me with the important questions of:
V: "Who is Adam, Eve?"
Me: "It's you, silly goose!"
V: "Oh, okay." c:
And like with every story that has Eve in it:
Tumblr media
:)
It's adorable to see Bernard getting some love though!
This game just flies by so fast when it's the two of us thinking, taking turns on what gets to be where so we push the other forward where our own ideas fail us. Playing games like this with a buddy truly beats playing it alone.
It's tagged LGBTQ+ because you can put two guys or two girls in love in some of the frames and it's adorable. They interact well.
Tumblr media
Me: "Oh look! It's the tiers of regret whenever I decide to open up."
Tumblr media
Can't believe this whole story is about how Edgar dies and forgets he's dead while being dead so he ends up shocked that he's dead when he sees himself in the mirror.
It's such a good plot for a fanfic not gonna lie... It's Genshin related and not meant to be here, but /I/ am the one who is writing this 'review' and I am the rat that makes all of the rules.
Tumblr media
V: "These... Two pixels, why are they so hot...?"
Me: ".... Yeah."
V: "I know you want her dress."
Me: "Oh I want to BE her."
Tumblr media
Us two: *GASP*
V: "Are you ready?"
Me: "VAMPIRE TIME."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
V: *Accidentally does this because he randomly drops characters on the map after figuring out what to do.*
V: "My brain (is so big)... I'm singing up in Harvard."
V: *Struggles with the simpler map later*
Me: "I think we have to sign you off Harvard now."
AND THE ENDING IS SOOO CUTE IT'S SO SUBTLE I BARELY NOTICED BUT IT MADE US SO HAPPY TO GET TO THE ENDING.
Like giving two kids a paper crown and calling them 'champ'.
Tumblr media
Someone in STEAM was asking how to solve the Maid and the Knight story and someone commented under it with 'God bless you'. Seriously, we managed on our own and it's all because it was 50/51 and we HAD to finish it to get to the ending.
During our reviews:
Me: "I think the graphics are beautiful. For a game that has a simple idea of making stories via characters and places being put together, everything is very well animated, interactive and apparently, given the achievements, it also has MULTIPLE options to work with."
V: "I agree. Also, there is an update in September."
Me: "Overall, it's a game I'd get if it's on sale. It's 20$ and in comparison to a visual novel with 40K words, a couple scenes, art etc. If that was 20$... I'd still think twice, but the point is - for what it is and it's original, a game I have never seen before, I think it's pretty good. It also doesn't have any background music, it could probably set the mood for some chapters. But the sound was totally good. No sounds overlap no matter how quickly you click around so it doesn't create a caccophony."
V: "Yeah, the music, or the lack of thereof is still fixable."
Me: "Well, there's the update. Might as well wait and see."
V: "Overall ranting?"
Me: "Hmmm..."
V: "On the count of three?"
Me: "Ok."
V: "Ugh I'm stuck between two... Ok, one... Two... Three!"
Me and him at the same time: "Seven."
V: "Why am I not surprised."
And that's it! It was truly a wonderful experience. Big thank you to developpers and the entire team that came up with the game. Can't wait to see what the updates may be and thank you, V, for sponsoring our gameplay.
Hope we get to play much more in the future.

ive been having trouble making time to sit down and write anything concrete recently because of my adhd so i tried what you said in one of the ask prompts you answered where you write a tagline and title at the top of the doc and just go it til you lose steam and oh my god. i was able to bang out 2k words in about an hour or so. im pretty disorganized with my writing especially bc i like to write/brainstorm in my journal and then type it up so ive been kind of stalling for the last month but this has completely changed the game for me. i know youve also mentioned using sticky notes before but i want to know if you have any other things you do youd like to share!
I'm happy to hear it worked for you man! I also have ADHD, so I know how hard it can be to make time and write down something concrete. I don't usually find writing tips or tricks that work for my brain, so it's very cool that I was able to help someone else write with my own methods.
I think I mentioned this one before, but whenever I get in a writing jam, and I'm not sure how to continue something, or I feel stuck, I pull up a random word generator and generate words to use as "mini" prompts. It adds some organic stimulus, while also giving you a chance to look at the scene you're trying to write from a different angle. It's kind of cool how many times I've used this thing and the words it generated worked so well thematically for my project.
I also found that when writing starts to become a chore putting it on my daily to-do list helps because, in comparison to my other "bigger" chores, I am more likely to do something creative because it feels easier to my brain (even if my brain thought it was too hard to do like, ten minutes ago)
I also find that writing kind of a free form draft at the bottom of the document that sums up the emotional beats of the work or next part of the work (especially if you've already started said project) really helps me as a reference point if I kind of get lost directionally.
Peter actually needs Wade’s help. They team up. Wade learns about morality and surprises Peter a little. The no kill rule is set (?) they clap off into the sunset.
This is a summary I wrote about the next bit for one of my long projects that I tacked on at the very bottom of the project so if I'm ever writing and forget where I'm going, I can look at it, but it's not distracting me or anything. It's also not, like, a big summary - you can't actually get any plot details from this, it's just sort of a vague roadmap of the points you haven't covered yet.
I can't really think of any other specific writing tips right now, but hopefully one of those might be useful to you! Congratulations again on writing. It's so hard to get something from the brain and onto the page, but the hardest part is definitely over. I think the last piece of advice is that it's better to write a shitty rough draft than no draft at all. I always get lost in over-editing even if I've only written, like, a paragraph and have to force myself to word vomit before I reward myself with nitpicky editing.

WoX's Secret Sale Numbers
Making this an entire post because I wanna add pictures. lol Women of Xal was 15% off on Steam last week, and we told absolutely no one* about it! Why? Because we wanted to see if we could get some people to convert their wishlists to actual purchases without any advertising whatsoever. I wanted a baseline understanding of how Steam works.  *Well, okay, I did mention it during a livestream on Friday. I didn’t think about it ok my brain just went into ad mode aaaa Turns out that Steam does actually advertise your sale for you in some capacity despite claiming not to, even if that’s just sticking the game on the “sale” page. Because we made about 4x as much last week as we usually do. Numbers and graphs under the cut!
Pre-Advertising:
Let's start with the period of time before we even started using tumblr Blaze. The first Blaze post we purchased was the $4.20 one on 4/20, so here are some numbers on our sales from the three weeks prior to that week.
Before any advertising whatsoever, we were selling less than 1 copy a day, and making about... $5 a day.
Tumblr media
Tumblr Blaze:
Our first Blaze purchase was that $4.20 sale and it was probably tuned a little weird because apparently some people saw the post like three times in a row. Oh well.
We've Blazed a post about WoX a total of 3 times, and the exposure has been gradual but definitely noticeable. Since then, our daily average sales increased to 1 per day, making about $11 a day.
Thanks, tumblr! <3
Tumblr media
Steam Sale:
Now the fun part. We put the game on sale for 15% and said absolutely nothing about it, just to see if we could get some of our 1,800 wishlist listings to convert. And they sorta did! 3 copies sold per day, and $47 per day!
Tumblr media
Wishlist Conversions:
So let's talk about those wishlist conversions. We've had 2,193 unique users on Steam wishlist the game. 237 of those later deleted their wishlisting, whereas 155 were converted to actual purchases. This leaves a total of 1,801 users who have currently wishlisted the game. Over the course of the 15% sale, we've had 14 people purchase the game off their wishlist and 21 (!!) add the game to their list. The sale actually resulted in a net INCREASE in wishlistings, which is wild to me.
Overall:
Y'all want a graph? Here, have a sales graph. We'll go over it together.
Tumblr media
The first peak circled in fuchsia is from our initial beta release in August. The second peak in yellow is from our full release in October. The third peak in green is a little hard to see, but that's right after we started using Blaze. You can see that our sales have generally increased since that point, which is awesome.
And the fourth peak in white is from the 15% sale. Even without any advertising, that sale outperformed our tumblr Blaze numbers. Granted, they're so close together that I have no doubt some of the tumblr blaze people are mixed in with the sale people. I'm sure a few players saw the game through tumblr, bookmarked it for later, and then saw a sale a few weeks later and decided "why not?".
Thanks to everyone who's bought the game. <3

So like, who is the target audience of commercials? I've never seen a commercial and thought "Wow, that's a great pitch, I want that product now" I think "This is a commercial I'm fading it into the background, and anything I hear is most likely false or exaggerated". The best a commercial can do is make me aware that the thing exists, and that has really only happened once, with the Hatsune Miku game PC port. I saw the commercial for it, thought "oh, that's cool", then didn't buy it for another year and a half. And in that time, I had been made aware of the game from multiple other non-ad sources.
So, in order for an ad to actually make me interested in something, it would have to be something that I already care about or have a vested interest in. But if that's the case, then I would *already know about the thing*, or would most likely have found out about the thing from some other source. Since I already care about it, I most likely am going to have some way of finding out about the thing, whether from a youtube video or a steam storefront page.
However, the worst a commercial can do is make me actively hate the product and avoid buying it because the ads piss me off to a ridiculous degree. Which has happened. Multiple times.
So who are commercials trying to target? Most people are going to tune them out, or have something similar to my view of commercials, at least that's what I assume. I've never met someone who either likes or even is indifferent to ads. Everyone hates them.
But even if someone didn't despise ads, it doesn't make any logical sense. Let's assume it's a phone company ad. If you have a phone, you're most likely fine with it. If you want to change providers, or are in the market for them, then *YOU'RE ALREADY LOOKING FOR A NEW ONE*. The ads aren't going to make you want to get a new one. And you're not going to automatically switch to a provider because you saw an ad. Any normal person is going to research all their options beforehand. So you would research it, and if it turns out to be better, then you *WOULD HAVE SWITCHED TO IT ANYWAY*. If it isn't better, then you're not going to switch to a worse provider because of a 15 second shill. "Oh, but you were alerted to the existence of i-" W R O N G. If a company is wealthy enough to afford a ton of ads, then it's already a prominent company. That you would have found out about with 10 seconds of research. That any person would do.
And if it's something even more meaningless, like bread or a soda or soap or something, then that doesn't make sense either. Who's going to buy a specific brand of bread because they saw it on TV, or scrolled past it online, or had to sit on a bench with a picture of the bread stuck on it? Even if you see someone drinking a coke in an ad, most of the food ads are so uncomfortable to watch that it's not going to have much effect on you.
So, genuinely, what's the point of ads? Who's buying stuff because they see an ad for it? It has to work on *someone*, since they wouldn't do it if it didn't work. So who is this person buying all of the shit they see in commercials? Is it just one rich guy named Jerry who has a condition where he has to buy anything he sees or he explodes? It doesn't make logical sense! Please, someone tell me why companies bother with something that doesn't work on anybody? Are they just so distorted that they think that the ads actually work? Is it a scam run by ad creation companies to trick CEOs into thinking they'll get more purchases? WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?
just. fuck.

i have thoughts about YIIK. nothing crazy deep it's just that i'm almost 13 hours in now at chapter 3 level 21 and i've been spending this whole time ragging on the game? deservedly so? but i also have some positive and mixed opinions towards it too and i wanna write them down in no particular order! (full transparency: i'm playing vers 1.25, with assist mode on so i can use the game's slow down mechanic whenever i want in battles, i have the sort of elemental weakness/resist system added in 1.25 turned off, and i'm sure some of the things i have to say will have to do with whether or not YIIK had the proper funds and time to achieve what i think could be done better but i have no knowledge on how that shit works. what do you want from me.)
i like the sort of low polygon/flat textures plastered on lumpy geometry/choppy frame rate style of the game's overall aesthetic and the character art for the different talk sprites is generally pretty well done (could've maybe used less gradient tool tho)
going off of that tho: the game's start menu has a references page that lists media that YIIK might either directly reference, make homages to, or have been at the very least inspired by and while that's nice and makes sense with the game's pseudo-retro feel i have this feeling that there wasn't that deep of an understanding about what makes of the media they listed like. good? and impactful? it just feels kinda surface level.
the music is also pretty alright! like i said i'm only at chapter 3 (so i've been to Flag Town and met up with Claudio and Chondra) but so far i haven't really heard a piece that i didn't at least passively enjoy (fun fact: there's different battle themes and one of them is done by Toby Fox! i've known about YIIK for a couple of years now but didn't actually know this until recently and i'm delighted to report that you hear it and go "oh yea that's Toby.")
voice acting is alright. it's passable. no particular character that i felt so far has been way better than all the others. like i said before tho sound mixing and levels and mic quality vary between characters and sometimes even between lines of dialogue? also Alex's internal dialogue (infamously) goes on longer than it needs to be a good chunk of the time considering this is an RPG and not a visual novel but also there would be pauses of up to like 5 seconds between lines on autoplay?? and it felt like the most awkward pause ever??? i haven't noticed that happening since chapter 1 ended tho so who fucking knows. i'm playing a pirated copy who gives a shit i guess. (on the Alex Doesn't Know How to Shut the Fuck Up point: this version of the game gives you an option at the beginning to play the game with reduced monologue but the original cut option is described as "ideal for those seeking a deeper understanding of the storyline" so like. FUCK your players who don't wanna hear Alex whack his own dick I GUESS.)
there've been a few lines of dialogue so far where i hear them and go "what was the fucking point of you saying that?"- same goes for some sections of player interaction (Alex talking amongst multiples of himself in his head after certain cutscenes not just being an automated event being the biggest thorn in my side)
i LOVE Rory being a tank character. his default pacifism "attack" making him a human shield along with his skill that lets him swap his HP and SP for when his health gets too low while defending the party is genuinely such a good combo. i'm looking at the vers 1.25 announcement made on steam and this is apparently a result of them improving Rory's "usefulness in battle" so you know what? good on the developers. i gotta tentatively give it to em on that one.
i don't mind everything in battles (from melee to skills to dodging) being QTEs but i don't like that there's never a window of time or a tutorial when you first go about using them so that you can get a feel for how they work ESPECIALLY for skills that require you to hit multiple buttons/sections and ESPECIALLY at the very beginning of the game. i think the game could've also benefited by having some accessibility settings.
speaking of i like that there's 2 separate QTE minigames for dodging - for attacks to only target one character and for attacks that target multiple characters - but in my experience the former is a lot hard to get a full on dodge rather than a defense buff without the slow down mechanic and i honestly don't know how to feel about it. like i'm sure that some players out there have a much harder time with the former or have an equally hard time with both but. still.

Tagged by @samblerambles. Thank you! I love to talk and can't answer with short answers, so there you go under the cut.
Last song I listened to: M83 - Holes In The Sky (Phantom Liberty LITERALLY has a mission called Hole in The Sky at the beginning of the DLC. I'm surprised they wasted such a perfect opportunity to use this song 'cause I saw the scenery and heard the ambient music in the game and was already anticipating it because it kinda sounded like this song to me.) Listening to it on repeat since yesterday tbh.
Favourite content to watch: I'm not really sure what to answer cause I watch content on occasion and in waves. Basically, I binge watch it mindlessly and then I stop for a while. Most of my subscriptions on YT stay unwatched these days, which sucks.
On YT I'm subscribed to: a couple of cooking channels (one local one is currently my fav, his videos are very cosy); a dude with a farm; some YTbers that play video games (haven't watched any playthroughs in such a long time, now that I have my own PC and the ability to play); some true crime channels; a woman that lives near the North Pole; two different channels that help homeless people; a couple of tech channels (smartphones, PCs, new hardware like that); a pet groomer; a drawing channel or two; cross stitch/embroidery/sewing; a couple of aviation channels; a couple of renovation/DYI channels.
If I had to pick, then right now it's the woman that lives close to North Pole and a pet groomer. A dude with the farm is kind of my fav, but sometimes I'm not in the mood to watch it and miss a couple of videos. Same with aviation: I love love LOVE airplanes, but sometimes I'm not in the mood.
Despite it looking like a lot, I really don't watch that much. Out of maybe 30 videos visible on the page it would be good if I watch one or two videos without scrolling down or going to my To Watch playlist and searching for something to watch there.
Favourite games:
Of all times fav: Uncharted 4 & Dishonored/Dishonored 2. Cyberpunk 2077 (probably; bc I currently have 322.7 hours on Steam there & I'm planning on continue playing. A particular brain worm from there and his best friends from the past are everything.) Deus Ex. I keep forgetting that one but Y E S. It was there before Cyberpunk happened.
As in *right now*: Baldur's Gate 3. RDR2 (maybe? I haven't played that one since the moment I finished the main game, but the story deeply shook me and I called it a masterpiece in my review on Steam.)
To me a FAVOURITE is something you commit to, so it's hard to choose something that I'd actually *actively* stick with. But if we talk less serious, I love video games in general. So many of my fav characters are from video games.
Favourite colours: Most shades of blue (the ones that have blue in them too). Deep rich green <3. Gold.
Favourite animals: All of them. Yes. (I love cats, whales, horses, cows, wolves. I'm an animal person.)
Favourite food: Pickled cucumbers is my all time fav. Pasta (mac and cheese). Sushi (basically sea weed + cream cheese + red fish/lox + maybe a cucumber or bell pepper = heaven). Cucumber + tomatoes + bell paper + sour cream salad is my base that I can't function without. I'm a foodie (which is my big problem since ever but oh well.)
Sweet, spicy, or savoury: I'll keep your answer in a way: 'NOT spicy, my acid reflux does not enjoy that.' Yeah, mine too. Can't eat spicy at ALL, it hurts my guts for real. I like a mix of sweet + salty + savoury. I wouldn't want to eat just one thing out of these. Sweet and sour sauce is <3
Current obsession: Cyberpunk 2077. Couldn't watch anything today, couldn't think of anything else, couldn't focus. But then BG3 adds to the mix because I'm still hoping to finish editing that Halstarion fic. It refuses to work with me & I dislike a lot about it. And, of course, Drakecest is my all time fav obsession, it's always at the back of my mind, chilling on the couch, waiting for me to come back to them and start playing with them.
Last book I read:
The one I finished: The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James. It was a reread.
The one that I didn't finish: The Haunting of Maddy Clare by Simone St. James. I listened to an audio version that I found, but I only found 2 parts & it's definitely longer. I'd like to finish it, but I haven't seen more parts so far (and to download the actual book and sit down and focus on the the text is a god damn TASK for me.)
Last thing I googled: Probably "hands to the sky, i am a dreamer m83" because I started singing it, but for some reason thought it was 'I need you' by them and started listening to it. Turned out, my brain mixed the songs.
Fun facts:
I was a very active and a very popular kid in kindergarten (first french kiss there during the nap hour while everybody else watched and cheered? yeeeah. very silly, very fun. lol.)
I went to see one of Saw movies to cinema when I was around 10-12. Because I was so young, my dad had to go with me. He loved to tell his friends after how grown people couldn't handle the look of autopsy and guts while I didn't even blink. It always made me smile when he did. I loved the look of blood and horror (which stayed with me to this day, though I get anxious sometimes about blood in some situations.)
The money I bought my cat with partly came from Depeche Mode ticket that I bought, changed my mind, and sold (and, obviously, gave those to the breeder as a guarantee that I'm getting the kitten. I was around 16.) The rest of the price my dad paid for me.
I used to be a huge concert freak. All the travelling I did (13 countries) happened because of concerts. As soon as I turned 18, I started travelling. I slept outside a stadium of my fav band. I met musicians at airports and their hotels (mostly locally though, before I could start travelling). My time as a teen and up until 20 years old was very fun.

@inkscription reminded me that i completely forgot to leave notes on the card game in Plasticity:
I wrote that scene while I was rewatching part of Yu-Gi-Oh and kept getting ads for the anime Chihayafuru, which I assume kept getting recommended to me because of Yu-Gi-Oh, as it's also about playing a specific card game. (Side note: I've also gotten more than one recommendation for Squid Game based on "you like children's games that end in death, right?") I had never heard of the game in Chihayafuru, so I looked it up. The game is uta-garuta ("poetry karuta"), with "karuta" being a loan word of the Portuguese word for card, carta. I'm not going to go into detail about the rules, but basically you have some cards with poems laid out before you, and someone reads out a part of a poem. The first person to to slap the corresponding card wins.
Because I do love card games and was rewatching YGO, I wanted to include a card game in Plasticity, and I wanted it to be something Tori had never heard of. I preferred an actual Japanese game, so I read this page on competitive karuta and watched some videos on competitive karuta. While I thought the game was really cool and have Chihayafuru on my to-watch list now, I didn't think it was a game a lot of ninja would play (due to having to memorize specific poems, and also it can't really be played quietly in your shared barracks or whatever), and also I wanted Tori to be able to catch on quickly by observation.
So, in the line where Itachi says something like, "Were you expecting karuta?" he means uta-garuta or competitive karuta. Because karuta is literally just a loan word for card, I'm not sure if it encompasses other card games when used in Japanese... however in the English-language videos I watched, they just said "karuta" or "competitive karuta," so I figured this was the proper "translation" into English. I'm not sure this is correct or if anyone who has a better knowledge of whole topic would agree, but given I just wrote about how language in Naruto is a trap, I figured I'd give my reasoning LMAO. (Where did the word and the European suited card decks come from if there's no Portugal? Who knows! It's like the New World foods! Don't think about it!)
The line about "This isn't Fire Country!" when Tori complains about there being too many suits is meant to imply a different type of card deck with a different number of suits exists/is popular in Fire Country, mostly to cover my own ass if someone produced screen shots of Tsunade or someone playing with standard French-suited cards.
A lot of Tori's experiences with "culture shock" actually come from me having lived & worked abroad. I once accidentally bought a Spanish-suited deck of cards and I just remember dealing the cards for a game the first time and being like: oooooh I made a mistake. I read the wikipedia page on karuta (used here in the sense of "Japanese cards games") and picked the unsen karuta deck as the most oooooh I made a mistake worthy. The game I described them playing is completely made up because I couldn't find a good description of a specific game before I ran out of steam researching.
The whole card game thing was meant to highlight one of Tori's strengths, which is that she can pick up on "rules" via observation and then (with some fumbling practice) play along as well as the next person. It also helped that she went into it already understanding the basics of how card games work-- i.e., she's not used to playing with five suits, but she understands the basics of probability and how that ties into your chances of making a specific pattern. Basically, it's a reminder to the rest of the cast that a lot of her seemingly bizarre/stupid behavior is literally just ignorance, and she's secretly pretty clever underneath it. :P

The waning light of the late afternoon sun filters in through the grand windows, stained glass painting the room a myriad of colours. Polished maple shelves line the walls, packed to the brim with dusty tomes. Comfortable armchairs sit around a side table, the gilded siding gleaming. On its surface sits a dainty teacup, still steaming.
Florence strides through the aisles of the library, trailing a finger along the worn spines. The lady of the house divides her time most often between the beautiful music room and the library, as Allen leaves her to her devices, most of the day. Running a city, he always says, takes a lot of work, dear. She’s not complaining at all, if it puts her at a difference from the barbarian she is lucky enough to call a husband.
Stopping, finally, she pulls a book from the shelf, running her fingers across the letters decorating the cover, fingers catching lightly on the grooves. ‘Wuthering Heights’, the cover reads, and Florence nods, content with her choice. Drifting across the room, she settles comfortably into the plush chairs, reaching a hand out to grasp the handle of the teacup beside her. Soft spice settles over her tongue, and her chest fills with warmth, the steaming beverage warding away the slight chill in the room. Cracking open the cover, her eyes drift over the slightly yellowed pages of the novel.
“I have just returned from a visit to my landlord—the solitary neighbour that I shall be troubled with. This is certainly a beautiful country! In all England, I do not believe that I could have fixed on a situation so completely removed from the stir of society…”
The woman recites the words on the page, voice drifting high into the rafters as it flutters past her lips. Florence has always enjoyed reading aloud, as it made her feel as though she was not alone. That someone hears her, and cares to listen to the words that flow from her mouth. Allen hated it, in the beginning. When he had given her the time of day, and cared for her. Promises of forever tumbled from his lips then, instead of the insults and hurt that dripped, like a slow poison, from them now.
Shaking her head clear of those thoughts, she continues. An hour passes, then another, and Florence loses herself in the narrative. These characters, brutal and flawed, intrigued her. They enchanted her, and she was unable to put it down.
Until a set of heavy footsteps, thunderous against the polished floors, near the door to the library. She knows exactly who it is, spending as much time as she had training herself to recognize his gait. Shutting her novel with a loud snap, she looks around the room. Everything is in its place; the room is pristine, as always. Smoothing down her dress, a bright yellow with lace at the hem, she waits for the inevitable. The click of the door opening rings through the suffocating silence of the room, and Allen strolls in, perfect image maintained by his coiffed hair and expensive pinstripe suit.
“Florence, my dear. I knew I might find you here.”
“Allen, is there something wrong?” Florence replies, the hands that rest on her lap subtly trembling as she gazes at her husband. He seems to be in a good mood today. Florence only hopes it can stay that way.
“We will be putting on a ball in the coming weeks, to celebrate my proficiency as mayor. Now,” Allen slips closer to his wife, and brings a hand to her chin. Holding her in place, he presses closer, looking directly into her hazel eyes. “I hope I won’t need to reiterate this. Please do try and behave.”
“O-of course, Allen, I will—”
“We wouldn’t want a repeat performance of recent festivities, would we?”
His words make Florence’s blood boil. She sees the world in shades of angry red, and clenches her fists as tight as she can, hiding them from Allen’s view. Her knuckles are painted white with the strain of keeping her composure. A few weeks have passed since Allen rained pain and devastation upon his household, but the wounds both mental and physical are not so easily hidden, swept aside.
Pasting on an agreeable smile, cheeks straining with the effort, she nods her head. Florence knows that if she plays by his rules, she’ll remain unharmed. He’ll finally leave her alone.
“I will be on my best behaviour. Please, do not worry, dear.”
Allen tilts her head up further, to stare right into her eyes. Florence would love nothing more than to deal him the pain that he had dealt to her. To John, and to James. Instead, she raises her hand, laying it across Allen’s, as she gazes earnestly back. Touching him feels horrifyingly wrong, and it's as though fire laps at her palm.
“You will need a gown, no doubt.”
“I was planning to go into town with Ms. Weston. You remember, she—”
“I do not care who accompanies you. I care, darling, that you do not embarrass me,”  The man smiles at her, sharp canines glinting dangerously in the fading sunlight, and he presses his lips to her cheek. His scent, sharp and cloying, nauseates her. Allen stands up to his full height, which, admittedly, was not much, and moves for the door. Turning back to look at her once more, he takes her in almost hungrily. “I wonder, Florence, if you still look as lovely unclothed as you do in this dress. Perhaps tonight, we may find out?”
With a sneer and a chuckle, he walks out the door, closing it behind him.
Florence’s hands unclench, finally, as subtle pain rips through her palms. Gazing down at the skin of her hand, she sees deep pink crescents. One of them is streaked lightly with blood. She had broken the skin, it seems.
Trembling hands retrieve the book from the table it had been left on, and Florence opens the cover once more. Eyes drifting down to read, she can’t seem to make sense of the words, anymore. Florence is shaken, and she knows that it is precisely what Allen wants.
It is but a game for him; a battle of control. He’s winning.
---------
“You mean to tell me that he… Oh, Florence…”
The chime of nails against delicate china rings through the luxuriously decorated sitting room, as Florence passes a teacup, the steam wafting from the top following the scent of rich spices, to the woman sitting on the plush divan. Her dress, a pastel lavender, meets the floor in a stream of tulle. Dark tresses, pulled back in a small, loose braid, curl as they fall across her shoulders.
“Emma, I have no idea what to do.”
Emma Weston had known Florence longer than she could remember. They had met when they were young, and since then, they’ve been almost inseparable. That is, until Allen came along. Slowly, almost inch by inch, he had pushed Emma out of the picture, further isolating his wife. The women seemed to meet less and less over the years, now coming together a few times a month. Emma was unmarried, and rather educated, which almost seemed to scare the man. A favourite quote of his pops into Florence’s head, then: “Educated women, well, they’ll bring the downfall of humanity.” To the women, of course, it served as a nice bit of comedy.
“My dear friend, I… Is there anything I can do?” Emma lays a hand on Florence’s shoulder, earnest eyes locked on those of her friend. Florence meets her gaze then, and the glassy hazel eyes unnerve the woman. They look defeated. “Florence, we will fix this, somehow.”
“If that is possible…”
Emma shakes her head, eyes blazing with a incendiary anger she must keep hidden from the woman sitting next to her. Florence, naive as she might have been upon entering the relationship, has done nothing to warrant this treatment, this violence. Every mention of the horrors; the atrocities, that have been committed in this house makes the woman’s blood burn in her veins. Emma settles her hand over Florence’s, rubbing calming circles into it. She knows how the other woman ticks, after the years they’ve spent together, and she can see the slight tremors that pass through her. She’s scared. Why wouldn't she be, with a husband like that, Emma thinks.
“Florence,” The sentence almost tumbles out, but she catches herself. Florence has always disliked pity, felt that it was counterproductive and useless. It does nothing to help the situation, so there is no need for it. Emma changes the subject swiftly, a bright smile tilting up the corner of her painted lips. “What else have I missed? Surely you’ve gotten up to much, with your lovely husband gone so often.”
A moment of unusual silence passes, as a blush darkens Florence’s cheeks, pink shades dancing with the freckles that linger on her skin. “Well,” Florence starts, hands fidgeting in her lap as she looks anywhere but at her friend. With a fortifying sigh, she releases the words trapped in her throat. “I’ve… I’ve been writing to a man. An actor, from the theatre we frequent.”
“Oh? How long have the two of you been corresponding? Do tell me more!”
“A month, as of next weekend—”
“A month? Florence, it’s been a whole month, and you didn’t think it right to tell me? I thought we were friends… ”
“Emma,” Florence starts, scrambling to reassure her friend, until she glimpses the smirk that dangles from her lips. A relieved sigh fills the silence that had fallen over the two, and Emma’s giggle lights up the room. “You were joking…”
“Of course I was! Now, tell me more about this mysterious actor. What do you know of him?”
“Well, I do not know his name, unfortunately. This… this is my fault. If he knew who I was; if he knew Allen, he would never give me the time of day. Emma, he is beautiful, of mind, body, and soul.”
“How do you mean?”
“It was his appearance, initially, that attracted me. He was simply irresistible,” Florence’s cheeks flush deep scarlet, as an unconscious smile blossoms across her cheeks. Her hands slash through the air as she recounts her first sighting of the elusive actor. “…James and John, thankfully, had the mind to encourage me to contact him. Emma, he is poetic and charming, yet he isn't haughty in the slightest, like some who share these traits. He’s always been perfectly kind, and charisma drips from every pore. Every letter I receive from him… Goodness, Emma, it has the same effect on me that his performance had.”
“Perhaps you should invite him to the ball.”
It was a simple statement, yet those 8 words ring like sirens in Florence’s head. Her blush deepens, and she stammers out a response, nervous hands smoothing down nonexistent wrinkles on her gown. With a deep breath, she recovers, and locks eyes with Emma, who hides a smile behind a dainty hand.
“Have you gone completely mad?”
“Think about it,” Emma starts, revealing the amused smile that she had tried to hide. Taking in the way Florence’s mouth hangs open in shock, her eyes wider than saucers, Emma continues, a giggle fluttering in the air of the expensive room. “You could slip away from the other patrons, somewhere Allen would never find you, and meet the man that stole your heart.”
Florence remains frozen, as though she were a component of a still-life painting. Her blush-pink lips form an O, and her eyebrows creep close to her hairline. Her hands, the only thing in motion, are a flurry of movement as she fidgets under Emma’s watchful gaze.
“Florence, honestly, is it truly that preposterous of an idea?”
“O-of course it is! Emma,” The woman of the house shakes her head emphatically, mind racing to come up with the perfect excuse as to why this idea, although tempting, was utterly absurd. “Look, if Allen ever… I could never subject this… this angel to that.”
“If you think it’s best not to, then I will stand with you. This is, of course, common knowledge. What I will never do, however, is sit idly by and watch you throw away your happiness, again.”
Silence sits heavy over the two women, the only sound being the light slurping of tea gone cold. Emma, chancing a glance over at her long-time friend, takes in the quiver and shake of her hand. Florence sets the fragile china cup, painted a pale sky blue, on the wooden surface of the table that rests in front of them, and relaxes back into the comfortable settee.
“Is… Is James able to attend? The ball, I mean.” The relative quiet is broken by Emma, voice faltering as she curls into herself. For as long as Florence could remember, Emma has only had eyes for James. Whenever she came to the manor, her eyes would roam the chiseled marble hallways for even a short glimpse of him, and a deep blush seemed to dust her cheeks whenever he was in the room.
“I believe he and John are working that particular night, although… perhaps you could steal him away for some time alone?”
“Florence!”
The peals of laughter that fill the room muffle the hurried footsteps fast approaching, a choked gasp and the sound of falling papers finally making the two women look up. James stands by the door, shoulders hunched as he locks eyes with Emma across the room. A collection of envelopes litter the floor, and James, scrambling to his knees with a squeak, rushes to retrieve them.
A wordless glance passes between the two friends, and Florence nods, a subtle smile lighting up her face. Emma stands, flattening down her dress with clammy hands, walks up to the man, and he looks up at her under his eyelashes, hands stilled by her appearance.
“E-Emma! H-hello, I…”
“James, your face… are you alright?”
The man nods emphatically, almost thrumming with nerves as he replies, “it was nothing, Emma. You need not worry for me.”
Her hand, palm up, rests upon his cheek as she takes in the bruising, subtle now after the days that have passed, that mottles his pale skin. Florence can almost hear the rapid beating of his heart as he gazes up at her from his position on the floor.
“I can't help my worry for you, James,” Clearing her throat awkwardly, Emma shifts her gaze to the tiled floor, her eyes widening when she glances at the stationary strewn across the ground.“May I… or rather… Do you need help?”
The servant gulps audibly, and nods, cheeks an angry scarlet to compliment the fading tones of purple. The woman kneels next to him, and retrieves the fallen letters. Glancing at it briefly, her eyes light up excitedly, as she gazes at James.
“Are these invitations for the ball?”
“They are. I was to go around the town handing them out, just now.”
Two hands brush as they reach for the last envelope, and pull back, as if electricity had struck them upon contact. Florence hides a beaming smile beneath her hand as she watches her friends. They simply cannot look away from each other. James coughs, breaking the tension that had settled over the two, and they scramble back, each holding a portion of the letters. Two piles become one, and Emma steps back, the hand rubbing at her arm betraying the picture of calm she was trying to emulate.
“M-Miss Weston, always a pleasure. How are you?”
“I-I am well, James. And you?”
“Very well. May I say, you look… lovely.” The conversation peters out as their gazes flit to the ground, and Florence, from her perch behind them, can’t help but giggle. The sound propels the servant into action, and he thrusts an envelope into Emma’s hand, backing away as if he was burned by the feel of her hand on his.
“I was supposed to stop at your residence, but since you are already here…”
With that, he turns tail and rushes out of the room, leaving Emma standing, slack-jawed. Slowly, she turns around to meet Florence’s eyes, and the disbelief present on her face is almost comical.
“Perhaps you will be the one to slip away for a moonlit dance in the end, Emma.”
With well wishes, and an earnest promise to find dresses for the ball, Emma departs, stepping into her own carriage. The flush on her cheeks was still visible.
---------
“Of all the times to run out… Just my luck.”
Soft footsteps spatter like rain across the staircase, as Florence mutters to herself. Dashing into her bedroom, she searches every nook and cranny, pulling back with a grunt dripping with frustration. The supply that had sat on the desk against the wall was usurped, and there were no traces of any sheets in the rest of the mansion’s many rooms. Except for one.
Rushing across the hall, Florence stops in front of a pinewood door, intricately carved as most things within the manor happen to be.
Allen’s study, as she’s been told time and time again, was never to be entered, by anyone except the man himself. It’s rarely ever locked, though his intimidation serves as enough of a barrier from entering, until today.
All she needs is paper, after all. About to pen yet another letter to her nameless angel, she lacked the most important element: the paper itself. Where better to find a much-needed slip, than in a study, Florence thinks as she turns the gold-gilded knob. She opens the door only to be greeted with beautiful, wide windows of stained glass, which turn the sunlight into vibrant shades of red and green. Against the wall, a bookshelf stands tall, books of every genre imaginable lining it. Against the far wall, a well-polished mahogany desk, complete with winding embellishments around the edge, sits before an elegant leather armchair.
No paper in sight, of course.
A sigh reverberates off of the maroon walls, as Florence pulls open a drawer, careful to leave things as proper as possible so as to not alert Allen. Shuffling through the first, she finds a variety of legal forms and journals, and her frustration simmers inside of her. Moving on to the second drawer, she tugs on the wood-furnished handle, and her heart shatters.
Sitting prim and proper, face up in the drawer, was a letter addressed to Allen. In a curling script that, distinctly, was not hers, reads: “To my beloved, Allen.” This one note, this blasted letter, lays on a bed of dozens of others, all addressed in the same way, in the same sprawling hand. Florence can feel streams of crystalline tears trickle down the flaming apple of her cheeks, and a violent scream catches in her throat. Her insides burn in rage, in fury, in betrayal, and if not for her grip on the desk, she would have crumpled to the floor. There were no dates printed upon the envelopes, though, judging by the sheer amount, it is safe to say that this had been going on for quite a while. Long before she had laid eyes upon her actor.
Under the pile of deceitful notes, almost mocking her, sat the coveted paper. Ripping it out of the drawer, Florence turns, eyes sweeping the room for anything out of the ordinary. Seeing perfection, she tears out of the room, crossing the hall into her chambers. She sits herself down, defeated, on the chair adjacent to the small desk. Her head falls forward into her palms, resting there until, suddenly, she slams a hand down onto the lacquered tabletop.
Allen Bennett has stolen her livelihood. He has stolen her happiness; stolen everything that he saw worth taking. Greed seeps from every pore, and there are no consequences. Allen Bennett is a foul, demonic man, and Florence must play the role of the angel. The perfect wife. She must act as Allen’s toy, only of use to him when he needs a night of pleasure.
Curling her hands into rigid fists, the woman nods resolutely, and lunges across the desk. Trusty fountain pen in a clenched hand, Florence seizes the newfound sheets, and soon enough, a river of ink flows across the page. Teardrops that trickle down the slope of her nose serve as the signature.

❝ WATCH WHERE YOU'RE FUCKING GOING NEXT TIME, YOU ROTTEN BELL PEPPER. ❞
Tumblr media
Hate was a strong word but the flaring anger in your heart and overwhelming urge to run into a wall whenever your eyes landed on that tangerine said otherwise. It wasn't that you went out of your way to dislike someone that has everyone wrapped around their finger. It just so happened that you had no tolerance for bullshit, and Hinata Shōyō pissed you off in every way possible.
It started on the first day of high school.
Walking beside Minari, a friend from middle school, the two of you were eager to leave the building. The idea of grabbing steamed buns had unraveled itself in your mind, and what better way to enjoy food than by sharing?
"Are you going to try out for any clubs?" Your elbow bumped against hers as you two walked the slowly emptying hallway. "I think I saw the girls soccer team holding tryouts soon."
Minari shrugged, but you could already see the thoughts pinging in her mind. "I might if I can."
See, the two of you had almost reached the staircase when it happened. Minari's long hair covered her view from time to time, so you were used to looking out for her while chastising the girl about the usefulness of a hairband. But what you didn't expect as you pulled the girl aside just as a gaggle of guys rushed by was the full strength of a short orange-haired boy catching you off guard and nearly sending you tumbling down the flight of stairs.
"I'm sorry! I - I didn't see you there!" He shouted, his hand coming out to latch instinctively onto your school uniform before you could be thrown back far. "And on the first day too... I'm so sorry! Please accept my apology."
You stared at the short boy standing before you looking positively green with anxiety and guilt. Minari was already calming him down with mentions of accepting his apology, but all you could focus on was the pounding beat of your heart and the tingling feeling in your legs from your near-fatal experience.
"Watch where you're fucking going next time, you rotten bell pepper," you muttered before pushing his fingers off your now wrinkled white shirt.
You had walked away first, Minari in tow, but not before catching the shine of his name tag, 'Hinata Shōyō,' and the wide-eyed stare on his face that sent shivers down your back.
From that day forward, every flash of orange around the school seemed to be followed by a glare on your end and a roll of eyes on his.
"You're in the way, pumpkin head." Your words cut through the chattering hallway and sliced at Hinata who in turn threw you a pointed look, something that all the First Year students knew by now was reserved for only you. "I'm trying to get to the library, but somebody's walking too slow. Aren't you supposed to be on the volleyball team?"
Hinata scoffed, but stepped aside to let you through. Dirty looks were all he had in his armory apparently as time after time after sending an insult or two his way, he held his tongue. You liked to think it was because he didn't have the proper brain cells to form a response, but sometimes you wondered if you were being too much.
Up ahead, Minari waved at you to hurry before all the seats at the library were taken. Shaking yourself of your thoughts, you walked over to her. Unbeknownst to you, while you shouldered your bag, your wallet tipped over and fell out at a certain somebody's feet.
Hinata picked up your ratty wallet, noticing it on the floor, and went to call out to you before catching himself. What did he care? Still, unable to ignore it, he pocketed your belonging making note to give it back to you later. Right now, he had a game to worry about.
Tumblr media
Somehow you had ended up at the Karasuno vs. Aoba Johsai game during the Interhigh Preliminaries. Minari had dragged you up to the stands as discreetly as possible after convincing you that she wasn't feeling up to study. Considering she had her eyes set on a certain 5'10 blueberry, you were foolish enough to think that she'd wanted to take you some place fun.
Now as the two of you stared down at the game happening eagerly, you let out a sigh upon noticing Hinata. As if your day couldn't have gotten worse after misplacing your wallet, you were displeased to find that he was looking right back up at you with the same wide-eyed stare he had when you two had first met.
Shivers ran down your back almost as if on cue, and you tore your gaze away from him fully ready to leave the gymnasium and trudge back home. But had you turned away, you would have missed the freakish oddball combination execute their quick attack.
"Holy shit," you breathed. "What the fuck was that?"
Minari smirked. "Tobio-kun is a great setter, isn't he? Or were you too focused on Mr. Bell Pepper to notice."
You shot her a frosty look, pushing down the stuttering emotion starting to rise in your chest that most definitely did not feel like anger. "As if."
The game continued for what seemed like days but turned out to be hours at most ending at a score of 1:2 in Aoba Johsai's favor.
Deafening silence overtook your ears. Minari was quick to leave the stands, mumbling something about consoling the fallen setter while your eyes searched for some semblance of sunshine in Hinata's sullen ones.
Spotting his sunken expression, you felt yourself regret the hatred that had sparked for him for just a moment. A fleeting moment that buried itself in your heart, planting a seedling of growing doubt.
"Minari, we have to catch the bus back!" You called out to your friend as you joined her on the gymnasium floor.
She glanced your way, halting the conversation she had began with her Tobio-kun. "Two minutes, and then we can go. Please?"
You nodded despite feeling discomfort crawling up your spine at being surrounded now by those you didn't know. You settled by the door, checking your phone mindlessly to pass the short time only looking up when an outstretched hand came into view.
"You dropped this earlier." Hinata's words were short, sharp, and you were suddenly glad you had never been on the end of his scathing remarks. "On your way to the library," he continued.
"Oh," was all your malfunctioning mind could come up with as he took your open hand in his, placing your wallet gently in your palm. The warmth of his skin seemed pressed into your own even after he had started to stalk away.
Clearing your throat, you spoke before you could stop yourself. "You did well today. I - uh," you paused. What were you even saying? "I watched from the stands."
He offered you a soft smile, one that you realized could light the world aflame, before walking back to his awaiting team.
You placed your hand over your drumming heart, sedating the flustered feeling he had left behind with you, chanting in your mind over and over again that Hinata Shōyō was a menace and you had no plan to ever like him let alone fall for him.
But no one ever plans to fall in love.
Tumblr media
The Karasuno Boys Volleyball Club seemed to practice non-stop funnily enough, rather motivated by their loss from months ago instead of despaired. Minari had become a regular face during practice as she cheered the boys on in an attempt to woo Kageyama still, and by fault, so had you.
"Y/N, Tangerine's on his way over here." Minari nudged you, stealing your attention from the workbook open in your lap.
You shrugged, trying to focus on anything other than your slowly rising heartbeat. "Why? Did the coach bench him for his subpar plays?"
"No, actually Tangerine wanted to give you something but he's currently reconsidering."
You looked up immediately, eyes narrowing upon noticing Hinata standing in front of you with a small smirk. "You're looking really fucking smug for a guy who still needs to work on his skills. Kageyama says you lack basic technique."
Hinata rolled his eyes at you. "You're being rude."
"It's because I don't like you," you answered smoothly. "So get back to practice before you lose any more volleyball brain cells."
He let out a small laugh. Turning away, for a moment you thought he'd actually leave as simple as that, but just before he took another step, he tossed something your way. It fell on top of your workbook, smacking against the thin pages, causing a couple of the boys to look your way while Hinata jogged back to the net.
Minari leaned in closer to you. "He got you—" She cocked her head in confusion. "A wallet?"
It was a deep shade of orange that almost made you laugh out in irony. Detailed with card slots and a latch with snapping buttons, the wallet was definitely an improvement from the one you had right now.
"That's sweet... right?" Minari questioned, watching your expression as you opened the wallet to reveal a note — scratchy handwriting on a scrap of notebook paper.
'thought your wallet looked ratty old. not in a mean way of course!!!!
— your favorite, Pumpkin Head Shōyō
ps. my sister picked out the color :p'
"Stupid fucking carrot," you whispered under your breath, feeling your cheeks grow warm at his message. "I don't need a new wallet."
Minari scoffed at your words, turning to face you completely and taking your hands in hers with seriousness. "Be honest with me." You stared at her blankly. "Be honest, and tell me if you actually hate Hinata as much as you say you do. Why don't you just drop the act? You two obviously like each other enough to be friends, so why keep this all up? Isn't it tiring?"
Her words echoed through the hallways of your mind minutes, hours, and days after. Sitting at your desk in school, on your walk home, lying in bed staring up at the ceiling, they were as loud as life itself.
You thumbed the straps of your bag while waiting for the bus. The sun was slowly dropping from the sky, setting on the horizon leaving you in a thoughtful orange haze.
You two obviously like each other enough to be friends, so why keep this all up? Isn't it tiring?

The weeks following were conflicting and chaotic. Exam season settled on Karasuno High School jolting the students and staff into a cloud of stress.
You spent your spare time at the library, eyes boring into material that just wouldn't stick while a certain rotten bell pepper took his seat next to you.
"I have to pass my finals or Sugawara senpai is going to nail me to a wall," Hinata explained, spreading his notebooks out on the desk and bumping his elbow against yours in the process. "You do well in your classes, right? Do you — " He looked abash. "D - Do you mind helping me?"
Against your better judgement, you nodded. Looking back now, you suppose that's where your odd friendship began.
Days on end, the two of you would stay behind to cycle through the material slowly building a tolerance of each other much to everyone's surprise.
"Do you still hate me?" The question came one night, the weekend before his exams.
Hinata looked at you from where he sat on the swings, kicking his feet at the sandy grounds. The two of you were at the park, cooling off after a long study session.
Your eyes fell to the can of convenience store coffee in your hands. The slight of the passing breeze drilled his question further in your mind.
"No, I don't think so," came your answer, words wobbly and unsure despite the thrum of your heart beating loudly against your chest and the warmth in your cheeks.
Silence filled the space between you two before Hinata finally spoke up again.
"Then do you like me?"
Your body felt lit aflame, mind jumping immediately to the way he made you feel things you hadn't much before. "As a friend," you decided after a moment of flustered emotions. "We're friends, I guess."
Hinata nodded thoughtfully. "Well, I like you." He took a deep breath. "As more than a friend, but if you feel that way then I'll wait for you. We have time."
His confession became lost among the flurry of thoughts and colliding emotions raging on inside you. Before you could say anything in response, Hinata got to his feet, shooting you that now familiar smile of his and offering you his hand.
Tumblr media
The new year overwhelmed your senses like a storm of rain after a drought. Refreshed after the break, you returned to school with a new sense of purpose amplified by the motivation the new year always brings.
Hinata's confession had remained in your mind, pushed to the back by celebration but still bugging you every so often. The apricot haired boy had showed up, throwing ping pong balls (of all things) at your window to catch your attention over the break asking if you wanted to go grab something sweet with him. You promptly responded with a rejection, only to find yourself walking with him ten minutes later.
"How was your break?" Minari asked, bundled in a jacket, scarf, and hat. She joined you at your side, catching you on your walk from the bus stop to school.
You shrugged, pulling your puffy jacket closer to you. "It was okay. You?"
She smiled. "Hung out with Tobio-kun. We went for hot chocolate, and he taught me how to set." Her eyes seemed almost dazzling at the memory, and you laughed, pushing her lightly away.
"You and your Tobio-kun are positively gross," you said. "Absolutely—"
Your words were halted at the feeling of warm fabric settling around your neck and a known face popping up beside you with a proud smile.
"Stay warm. You can give it back to me later," Hinata said before jogging away to catch up with a pair of Second Year boys ahead.
Your hand came up to the green scarf around your neck, failing to form comprehensive sentences. Heart thundering, you ignored the funny looks others sent your way. Glancing at Minari, you caught her slipping giggles.
"What happened to Hinata Shōyō being a rotten bell pepper?"
"Shut up."
Lending you his scarf when days seemed too cold was just the beginning of it all. Days turned into weeks turned into months of Hinata pining after you and you—though obvious to everyone else—trying to decipher your feelings for him.
"Hey, I missed you," Hinata said to you lightly after you had agreed to drop something off for Kageyama on Minari's behalf. Quickly realizing the meaning of his words, however, Hinata corrected himself. "I mean—um, as in I m - missed you earlier. Like... like I didn't catch you today, you know?"
You tilted your head at him with endearment, a small smile playing across your lips at the sight of his blushing face. "Yeah, don't worry. I got it, sweet potato."
His flustered expression dropped. "You think I'm sweet?"
Your eyes widened, stuttering to form a response and correct yourself out of this situation you had suddenly been thrusted in. Luckily, Kageyama came to your rescue before you could embarrass yourself.
"Hinata, boke, stop flirting with Y/N!" The tall blueberry haired boy towered over Hinata with a menacing glare and a scoff. Kageyama turned to you with a blank look you took for an apologetic expression.
Shaking your head profusely, you put your hands up in surrender. "Ah, no worries, Kageyama. I—uh, I have something for you from Minari. She has classroom duties today, so she couldn't come herself."
Kageyama nodded, taking the wrapped bento box that Minari had prepared for him from your outstretched hands. He mumbled words of thanks before stalking off while muttering under his breath a colorful range of insults at Hinata who in turn sent him a funny face.
The Spring Interhigh was coming up, and you were sure the Karasuno Boys Volleyball Club was itching for redemption after what had happened last August. Deciding that you didn't want to interrupt their practice any further, you made move to leave only to stop at the feeling of a hand on your wrist.
Glancing back, you raised an eyebrow in surprise at Hinata's sudden action. "What are you—"
The tangerine boy had exchanged his lighthearted expression of just minutes ago with a look that you could only describe as properly motivated. "When we make it to Nationals, promise to give me a chance."
All around you, the gym seemed to fade until only Hinata was in your line of vision.
When we make it to Nationals, he had said, not if.
Unable to respond, you found yourself nodding because who were you to kid yourself at this point?
Tumblr media
The Karasuno Boys Volleyball Club did, in fact, make it to Nationals, but unfortunately lost to Kamomedai High School in the quarter-final round while Hinata spent his time at the hospital.
Hooked up to an IV line and dressed in one of those flimsy hospital gowns, Hinata looked unusually weak laying down on the bed. The others had left not long after you had arrived though some took more convincing than others.
"Next time, you can keep your scarf to yourself," you said, cutting the silence short with a lighthearted remark.
Hinata smiled weakly at that, his hand coming to rest atop your folded ones on your lap. "Don't worry about me. I'll be fine."
You shook your head. "Obviously, you can't take care of yourself." Slipping your hands from under his, you took the hand warmers out of your pockets and placed one in each of his hands. "Luckily, you got me."
His face lit up. "Oh, do I now?"
Warmth spread through your body as you looked away from his hopeful gaze. "Well, you did make it to Nationals."

*sigh*
(Solved. See the end of this post. I'm leaving all of this here in case someone else has the same issues/symptoms as I did, and searches for the fix.)
Once again, out of nowhere, my game won't load.
I've tried multiple ways: through CC Magic, through the .exe file, and through the launcher itself in Steam.
Everything starts up just fine, but the game itself doesn't actually start. Instead, it just sits at a black screen with the cursor spinning, for about a minute, then it automatically minimises and stays like that in the background.
Looking at Task Manager, I can see that it's running, but using no CPU or GPU, and only enough RAM for it to be ticking over in the background:
Tumblr media
I have no .bad files in my saves folder that could be causing it. Removing all CC doesn't fix it. Running it in Windows 8 Compatibility Mode also doesn't fix it.
I honestly don't know what else to do at this point. I'm at a complete loss. It seems like - just as I've got my mojo back for finishing this story - everything is conspiring against me doing so.
It was working absolutely fine last weekend. There have been no Windows Updates since then, I've installed nothing else at all - no CC, no other programs - since then. I have absolutely minimal CC installed; only things that I need to decorate specific locations (and those folders are getting moved out of the game when I'm not using those locations) and they have all been thoroughly scanned. All of my NRAAS mods are the latest versions, and - again - I've installed nothing since last weekend, when the game worked just fine, for hours.
When I try to run it through Steam itself, and end up having to use Task Manager to stop the game from just sitting there, churning at black screen, I am then unable to stop the game in Steam. It sits like this:
Tumblr media
No amount of clicking that button will stop the thing, and I have to force quit Steam. And when I do that, I get this, and have to force stop the game using that 'Exit Now' button:
Tumblr media
And when I finally manage to completely shut down Steam, then re-open it, I see this:
Tumblr media
According to Steam, the game is still running, even though it's not running in Task Manager! Why? Because the damn game is still running in the tray. But then, look at this:
Tumblr media
That's what I see when I close the game from the tray icon.
There is nothing in any of the game's folders that needs uploading. No screenshots, no videos, and no exports. There is nothing to upload, so why and what is the game trying to upload??
Does anyone have any idea - based on the description above of what's happening - what might be causing this?
UPDATE: Oh for the love of GOD, it turned out to be because I had previously run the damn thing in full screen mode! WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL? I've always run in Windowed, but since I've been using the new patch tool I found out that you need to run in full screen so that the lag in build/buy goes away (that was correct; I still had that severe lag in build/buy when playing windowed, but it went away in full screen).
After some frantic searching, I found this on the Steam discussion pages for TS3:
Tumblr media
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to Cruinne for that fix, because it's what got my game to load for me.
In future, I'm going to have to remember to go into full screen when building, but to ensure that I re-set to windowed mode before exiting. Just one more thing I have to babysit in order to get this game that I love so much just to run.

OF COURSE!!!! I'd say you're hella close to it!!! Definitely closer than I am XDD 💖💞💝💕💝❤️💕💕❤️ A G R EED /hj XDD
Yeah ;w; oohh that sounds super interesting!! I can understand not pursuing a story tho, stories are d i f f icult-- XD fun, but difficult, and you need an attention span for them! (Why do you think I only write one page stories??)
OMS yessss that's so accurate tho-- like I haven't changed much if I'm being honest (I spend a LOT of time inside.. XD) awww-- I can understand that- in japan we didn't have a backyard, so I stopped going outside much at all-- occasionally I biked to convenience stores or walked to vending machines, that was cool, but no backyard :/ having no backyard sUCks, like where am I supposed to scream into the void?? INSIDE?? /j
OMS-- CRYS XDD what a Mood™ tho- "oh I'm gonna continue this thing!!" *does something else entirely*
XDD It was done Against My Will™ (get Against My Will on the album I Haven't Awoken Well Rested Since I Was A Child by the band The Bags Under My Eyes Aren't Makeup! XD) MOOD-- I spent the quarantine summer doing nothing but staying up until the sun rose and sleeping until it was at its peak- where did the time goooo
I AGREE HOW DARE HE- LIKE EXCUSE?? YOU TINY HEATHEN??? anyways now I'm trying to go back to squirting him with a squirt bottle to startle him(even tho he's a fan of water, the harsh spray startles him) but anyways thank you crysss I'm never getting a cat in my life now bc of this rude child (dogs are superior anyways /hj)
(and now time to reply to the OTHER ask cause I'm efficient and not going to send two separate asks to respond to things that can be responded to at the same time.. ....why did I even ramble about that wtf henry(huh I never refer to myself by name that felt weird))
Okay!! No worries dude, you can always take your time with replies, I just don't trust tumblr XD 💞❤️💕💝💝💖💕❤️💖 of course!!! Thank you!!! 💖💕💕💖💞💕
Oooh!!! That sounds super fun!!! Man I miss hanging out with my friends-- but my closest friend(lives in my neighborhood) has a parent who works in other people's houses, so high risk, and the rest live several hours away :)) but anyways yeah that sounds hella!!!! I love that y'all were just like "okay well. we're gonna hang out anyways." XDD
Aww-- I'm glad you are!! My brother and his bf were supposed to come but I think we have to postpone that cause someone in his workplace tested positive for covid :( YESS FOODDDD-- oooh cheesecake?? I've never heard of having it on Thanksgiving!! Usually we have pumpkin, cherry, apple, and pecan pies!! (We're having pumpkin and cherry ones this yeah!! Two pumpkin pies, a cherry pie, and a cherry cobbler--) I... Have never heard of pineapple pie in my life! Sounds like it would make pineapple-on-pizza haters burst into tears tho--
YOURE WHAT-- CRYS YOU HEATHEN IT IS NOVEMBER!!!!! /j I can't stand Christmas music, being a choir student made me not be a huge fan of it-- too much Christmas music.. ugh. (Straight no chaser is tolerable at least. And Pentatonix. And covers by artists I like. But if I have to hear Jingle Bells ONE MORE TIME--) YESSS BESTOW UPON ME THOU'S PRESENCE AND PRESENTS... Ooh nice!! Pfft XDD Yess- I have multiple on my wishlist-- mostly for the switch-- OMS I CAN'T BELIEVE I DIDN'T ASK FOR THSC-- MAYBE IM THE HEATHEN--
Okay, it's January 5th! Literally not even two weeks after Christmas-- Feel free to scream happy birthday at me :3 XDD now I'm curious, what's yours?
awhhh thank you ;w;; 💕💞💕💞💞💕💞
and legiT- and omg- also what i do a lot is thinking i have a story all in control but then i realise that i only focused on the main parts and nOT the transitions and all that shit and then i end up last minute thinking them- XDD and ngl one page stories sound SOO much better- imo- not just for writing- but for reading as well- whenever i go to see a fanfic I always read the ones that has one chapter- dunno how to fully explain it- possibly cause its satisfying to see a story actually have its end other than a long lasting series that will never end- XDD oneshots are my FUEL
buT WoW omg this topic has now made me realise how i barely go outside- XDD i wish there would be other thingd around my neighborhood other than a "park" that has DEAD GRASS and the sprinklers go off like every hour for some reason- duNNo what the builders were thinking but i guess i dont mind- i stay in my house a whOLELE lot xD
and YESS IT GETS ME EVERYTIME- "hey lets draw-" *-WRITES-* XDD AND ABHAHAHAHA (NOW ON YOUR LOCAL MUSIC STORES- XDDDD) and omG MEEE- the times i would usually sleep would be around 3 am to 6 am- ironically my mom has a more screwed up schedule than i do- and SHE STILL HAS- last night she told me that she hasnt slept in 48 HOURSSS- MaMAAA PLEASE SLEEP
GO AWAY CAT HEATHEN- XD and omG a squirt bottle of water yes XDD and awh i definitely understand now how youll not get a cat- sounds like a hecka pain ;0;; i never even had a pet before (or not that i would recall- oh wait i think i had fish but i have an embarrassing story that made my mom ban fish from the household- OH MAN the shame)
and yeahh oh man- i hope you are okay with all these topics XDD and thank you!! 💕💞💕💞💕💞💕💞
awwhh i see- i wish you can hang out with your friends without it being too risky! that reminds me of that one time where my friend said "hey so uh you guys can hang out at my house since at my parent's workplace someone was positive for covid" and then immeadiately after they were like "SO WE NEED TO GO TO ONE OF YOUR GUYS' HOUSE" and Im LIKE- UH- NOO??? nOt AfTEr you just say THAT- nuh uh- thankfully we didnt hang out that day- better safe than sorry xD
and omggg those pies sound AWWESOMEEEE- i always wanted to try pumpkin pie before but when i asked my mom that she was like "nO iTS diSGusTing" and im like "*visible confusion*" and lOwKEY SAME- pineapple pie just sounds a bit off but my mom was really hyped to make it xD i'd actually say its not that bad! but im still not a fan of pineapple so uhhh xD (aNd YEAH IT DOES feel like it would make those haters cry-- XDD)
and PFHAOHFA IM A LIVING HEATHEN- XDD omg at this time of year- it gets CRAZYY for me- first off- Tree is a true filipino- right when it was the first day october- youd hear them say "FUCK HALLOWEEN"(and id just whine to them like "BUT HALLOWENENENEN") and then their family set up a whole christmas tree and over-the-top decorations- and omg- if you hate christmas music- you would despise the philippines sO MUCH- when the FIRST day of SEPTEMBER hits- CHRISTMAS MUSIC ON ALLLLL THE STORES- it will drive you WILDDD ( yeah its actually a normal filipino thing- not that i ever went to the philippines myself at tHAT time of year- but my friends and family tell me all about it- filipinos are the true christmas maniacs XDDD)
and awhhh choir must be a pain ;0;;; that would remind me how on one concert- the beginners class of choir screamed on purpose even though they werent supposed to- the teacher got so pissed XDDD and YESSS PRESENTSSSS- and awh man- i actually dont own ANY consoles at all- so the only things i can ask for is steam games- last year for christmas i got just shapes and beats- which was WORTHHH
and oo YAY- now i shall mark that on my calander- XD and mine is february 7!

I was wondering if you had any advice on playing in the sims 3? I've only ever played ts4 because I prefer the controls, but I really want to explore the older games. I'm absolutely adoring your ts3 posts!
Thank you! It means a lot, especially since I feel like most of my followers are just waiting for nsb to come back haha. I get that but at the same time it kinda sucks. Oh well, that’s off topic, let’s get to these advices, if we can call it that.
First off, be patient with ts3. Once you accept it just is the way it is, it gets enjoyable, I promise. I’ve been playing it for seven years now and I love it despite all the glitches and long loading times, so...:D
Second, I would suggest downloading some mods! You can take a look at what I’m using here. I can’t imagine my game without them anymore. The lighting mod is a great example. It makes the game so much prettier.
By the way - on the resource list I’ve linked, none of the nraas links are working. They moved the mods to another page if I’m not mistaken, but I don’t remember the name. Well, you know what to do - google is your friend. Our friend, actually. I should really look up the new links and update the list.
Nraas MasterController is a must have mod. It can do almost everything.
I play ts3 in the window mode. It’s more convenient for me when I’m taking pictures for a planned story and need to know exactly where I am.
Steam sales!! I don’t know if you have the game already but obviously Steam is the place to go if you want to buy it (and the packs - base game on its own is kinda boring). I don’t remember the price but they can get really cheap there.
Speaking of packs, I think my favourites are Generations and Seasons. I think they complete the base game and then all the other expansion packs are a “bonus”, if that makes any sense. As for stuff packs, my favourites would be the 70′s, 80′s, 90′s stuff and Diesel.
I can’t really think of anything else. I’d probably suggest downloading a default skin and eyes too because I’m not a fan of the ea ones, but I can’t really count that as advice can I. It depends on your own preference, if you like the ea skin just leave it in your game :D
If anyone else has any advices, you can leave them below!
