#on the channel i use to watch old f1 races#i see the thumbnail and i just go !!!#this season was just so underrated in general i think because of the lack of inter teammate drama/rivalry between gilles and jody#which led to their final wdc until 2000 when schumi came onto the scene#jody said it best himself when he said communication was clear between him and gilles and whenever one of them wanted to do something he#would tell the other. 'there was no bullshit' and 'we had an honest and open relationship which was part of our success'#and 'part of our skill was to keep working as a team' AND 'he realised what a good relationship we had.'#when f1 revolves around drama and general clownery (there's a reason why it's called the circus after all) it's honestly refreshing to see#a healthy relationship between teammates when it could've so easily festered and turned toxic#like so many have done in the past present and future because history is a circle and try as we can there are some mistakes we can't help#to repeat and it's all heartbreak and melodrama and wishing things were different with looking back and hindsight#don't let your mistakes consume you. don't let a rivalry consume you. don't let your hatred consume you off and on the track.#don't look back at the battlefield and see the smoke in the air and think 'what have i done'#but if there's someone who drives the knife into your teammate's back be the one to take it out#(looking at you san marino '82)#an organic farmer and snowmobile racer. huh. who would've thought?#who would've thought things would've ended the way it did?#(jody's early retirement and gilles' death)#who would've thought they'd only get one championship between them when they could've so easily won more?#welp. this was awfully long.#kym.txt

rubyyy i have an idea for your gen-z driver series! when you are free, maybe you can write about when lil miss just got into f1 and had many people doubted her just for her to nail her rookie season like the goat sir Lewis Hamilton did in his. feel free to tweak it however you want. I just thought it would be cool to see more off the racing side of gen-z driver. :))))
and i really enjoy your writings, keep them coming but also don't stress out too much about them as well :)
WELCOME TO THE STRANGE WORLD
Tumblr media
pairings: f1 grid x driver!reader
warnings: sexism. swearing. based this one on the 2018 grid, cause I imagine her joining the grid that year. christian horner & helmut marko.
author's note: this got me immediately inspired!! It's also the first time I tackle the racing aspect of the series so I hope it's a bit accurate and that it is enjoyable x
• • • • • • •
''Do you feel the pressure going into this week's race?'' The reporter asked her, a polite smile on his face.
Y/N carefully adjusted the mic attached to her cheek. ''Uh, definitely,'' she nervously chuckled as it was her first F1 press conference, ''there have been a lot of reactions, both negative and positive, so I do feel a lot of eyes on me at the moment.''
To say that there had been a lot of reactions was an understatement. The announcement of the female race car driver joining the F1 grid had become the #1 topic on several social media platforms and even international news channels had broadcasted about the ''controversial'' arrival of the young woman.
Various notable figures in the motorsport world had also voiced their opinion on the new face on the grid. There were many positive reactions, for example, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff saying: ''It's a step in the right direction. Many young girls will see her race and get more interested in the sport, which will hopefully motivate them to start karting.''
Susie Wolff, former development driver for Williams, also showed her enthusiasm. ''I think Y/N is the perfect role model for all the young girls who watch F1 at home. We've been following her closely the last few years and she's proved that she can compete with the big guys, I'm very proud and I can't wait for her performances this season.''
Unfortunately, there had also been less positive feedback. Red Bull Motorsport advisor, Helmut Marko, had questioned whether she would be able to handle the ''physicalities'' the sport asked of a driver. ''I hope I'm wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if she would be replaced by the second race.''
His Red Bull colleague, Christian Horner, had also made some sensitive comments about the young woman. He recalled his first meeting with her, stating he thought she was one of the grid girls and that it would be tough as she's ''entering a man's sport''.
Y/N had been upset with key figures of the sport making such statements about her, but she had heard worse throughout her racing career. Men like Horner were stuck in old times.
''Sebastian, how do you feel about a female joining F1?'' Both Y/N and Sebastian internally cringed at the rookie being referred to as a 'female', trying to not let it show on their faces.
The German collected the right words before answering. ''I'm very happy that Y/N is sitting here next to us,'' he smiled at her, ''I think her being on the grid and competing alongside us, is going to bring a lot of positive changes that should've been happening a long time ago. I've known her for some years now, so maybe I'm biased, but I couldn't think of a better person joining the line-up.''
''Thank you.'' Y/N mumbled, grown shy by Sebastian's praises. He had been involved in her career since her humble karting beginnings, wanting to guide her as he knew a lot of people would try to stop her from flourishing in the sport.
The journalist then put his focus on the other world champion sitting at the panel. ''Lewis, you share the same opinion as Sebastian?''
''I agree with Seb, it's nice to see that progress is being made in diversing the sport and she's here, because she deserves to be here.'' Lewis' answer showed his disagreement with the people who were convinced that the woman's arrival to F1 was nothing more than a statement to the FIA.
Y/N wasn't ignorant and knew her claiming an F1 seat would bring a lot of publicity, not only to her, but her team as well. However, they wouldn't risk losing millions of euros, because they simply wanted to make a point that women can competitively drive as well.
''I've seen her drive, we've all seen her drive and you can't deny that she has a huge talent.'' Lewis concluded his answer, sending a soft smile her way.
The reporter who asked the question directed his attention back to the young woman. ''Y/N, it must be great to hear those positive words from such seasoned drivers.'' He said to her, his hands pointing towards the two World Champions.
She shyly nodded her head, feeling the gazes of everyone in the room on her. ''Yeah, it's, uh,  very nice of them.''
''It's the truth.'' Sebastian chuckled.
Tumblr media
''That's P11 tomorrow, Y/N! Good job, we're proud of you over here.'' Her engineer announced over the radio, letting the driver know her qualifying session was over.
She pressed her radio button. ''Thank you so much, guys! A good start!'' She enthusiastically exclaimed, delighted about her team being happy with quali.
They had greeted her back into the garage with an applause and many headpats, congratulating her on her first ever F1 qualifier. ''Let's discuss now.'' Her coach put his arm around her shoulder and guided her to the team's briefing room.
It hadn't lasted long. The team was overall very satisfied with how the qualifying session had gone and didn't have much feedback for the rookie.
''Of course it would be great to score points, but finishing P11 is the realistic standing tomorrow.'' Her team principal's words had taken her by surprise, expecting them to want to score as many points as possible at the race tomorrow.
Y/N wasn't too sure if that was the genuine opinion her team had about the next day or if they thought that she wouldn't be able to make any overtakes. Whatever it was, the dilemma clouded her mind as she walked through the paddock, ready to go back to her hotel and unwind.
However, an arm pulled her out of her thoughts, making the rookie flinch at the sudden touch. ''What the heck,'' she hastily turned towards the person, ''Seb, don't scare me like that.'' Y/N calmed down seeing the German man grinning at her, Britta standing next to him.
''You looked like you were overthinking.'' He had seen the frown on her face as she passed the Ferrari hospitality, immediately knowing something was on her mind. ''Starting P11 is good for your first race, the best of the rookies.'' Sebastian figured it was related to the qualifying session.
''No, I'm happy with my starting position.'' She assured him, shaking her head.
The Ferrari driver furrowed his eyebrows, being confused. ''Then what is it? Did someone say something to you?''
Y/N glanced around the paddock, making sure no one of her team or a reporter was standing near them. ''I just, uh, well- during the briefing, they basically said that they don't expect me to make any overtakes and that I just need to try to keep my position.'' She explained to the duo, both listening attentively.
''They're already underestimating you?'' Britta commented, shocked they wouldn't encourage her to at least try to overtake as many cars as she can.
Sebastian agreed with his friend. ''A team telling their driver to not score points is the weirdest thing I've heard in years.'' He said to Britta, a frown gracing his face.
He turned towards the young woman. ''Don't listen to them, okay? You pass as many fucking cars as you can, alright?'' It almost looked like he was scolding her.
The girl nodded her head, an appreciative smile on her face. ''You know I will.''
''I love the confidence.'' Britta laughed, patting her back.
''Don't think about it too much, Y/N. You're gonna do great tomorrow, I'm sure of it.'' Sebastian ruffled her hair, a sincere tone in his voice.
Y/N simply smiled at both of them, and thanked them for their support. ''I'm gonna go back to my hotel now, but I'll see you tomorrow then.'' She bid them goodbye, waving as she walked through the exit gates.
Tumblr media
She could see and feel the condescending stares as she waited on the grid before the start of the race, some people didn't know how to be subtle. She had her headphones on, blasting music through them so she could drown out all of the negative thoughts.
A tap on her shoulder brought her eyes from the ground to the face of a semi-looking concerned Kimi. She paused her song and took the headphones off, ready to listen to what the older man had to say. ''Yeah?''
''I can hear your song.'' Kimi pointed at his own ears, visualizing his words.
Y/N's eyes widened, her worried expression altering into one of embarrassment. ''Oh, sorry, I'll turn it down.'' She apologized, immediately grabbing her phone to change the volume.
''No, uh, is okay,'' he told her, ''you good?''
She was stunned by his question, awkwardly staring at him for a few seconds before answering. ''Yes, I'm good.'' Kimi always kept it short, she figured she should do the same.
''Don't be nervous,'' the Finnish driver continued, looking into her eyes, ''people want to see you do bad, prove them wrong.''
She had met the man a handful of times before, but they had never talked this much with each other. Kimi kept to himself and she wanted to be respectful of that, not wanting to accidentally cross one of his boundaries.
He wasn't a man of many words (at least sober) so she appreciated his advice very much, knowing he wouldn't tell her this if he didn't think she could actually prove them wrong.
''Thanks.''
''No worry.'' A small assuring smile was found on his face, making the grimaces of her critics seem like nothing.
Tumblr media
''Y/L easily passes the Renault, moving up to P10.'' The commentary of David Croft sounded as she overtook Sainz, going from P11 to P10.
Her team's pit crew cheered in the garage, watching the spectacle on the screen. ''Keep pushing, Y/N! We're in the points.'' Her engineer told her over the radio.
''Hehe, understood.'' She chuckled, proud of her smooth overtake.
She managed to pass the Mclaren of Vandoorne in the same lap, falling behind the Mercedes of Bottas and the Renault of Hulkenberg who was doing his best to keep his seventh position in the race.
The pair was too busy challenging each other that they didn't see the car of the female driver coming through, passing both of them when they left a gap. ''Y/L jumps ahead of both of them! She jumped Bottas and Hulkenberg, moving up to P7! What a stellar performance of the rookie driver!''
People couldn't believe their eyes as she passed the Mercedes, undoubtedly one of the fastest cars on the grid compared to her team's midfield one.
''Bloody amazing, Y/N! The Red Bull is too far up to catch, but defend for your life now!'' P6 wasn't possible anymore as she went into the last lap, Max's car being quicker and having fresher tyres than her.
The last lap almost went by in a haze, the young woman scared something would ruin the beautiful moment for her, but that never came. ''Y/N Y/L comes across the line to celebrate her dream debut and she becomes the first woman in over 40 years to score points in a Grand Prix!''
She parked her car behind Max's, her hands on her helmet as if it were her head. Y/N sat in disbelief as reality dawned on her. You scored points in your first F1 race, the sentence played on a loop in her head.
''Oi! Little Miss scoring points on her debut!'' An Australian accent pulled her out of her thoughts, several pats on her helmet making her look up. ''You passed the Mercedes? Fucking amazing!'' He exclaimed as he saw the silver car parked behind her.
''Daniel, can you help me get out? My body is in shock, I think.'' Y/N awkwardly chuckled, a bit embarrassed about not being able to get out of her car on her own at the moment.
Fortunately, the Red Bull driver didn't see the big problem and helped her stand up, supporting her underarms.
The support turned into a congratulating hug, the Australian swaying her side-to-side. ''Welcome to Formula One, baby!'' He loudly exclaimed.
Y/N laughed at his antics, touched by his excitement for her good result. ''Thanks, Ricciardo.''
''Good overtake there.'' Valtteri patted her helmet with his hand, complimenting her. She bowed her head in appreciation. ''Thank you.''
Her and Daniel followed the Mercedes driver into the cooldown room, the latter handing her an ice-cold water bottle from the table. ''What place did you get?'' Y/N asked Daniel, turning to him.
''P4,'' he sighed, ''but I got fastest lap, so a little redemption.'' The Red Bull driver laughed it off, at least happy he got an extra point for the championship standings.
A pat on her back made her look back, being met with a sweaty Charles. ''Hey, man.'' She greeted him with a side-hug.
''Saw you got P7, congrats.'' The pair had been teammates the year before at Prema Racing so they have a good friendship with each other. ''Thanks, how did it go for you?'' Y/N was curious about her fellow rookie's debut race.
He shrugged his shoulders. ''P13, but only because 5 people retired.'' Charles downplayed it, glimpsing at the ground.
''Cheer up, Charlito! It's only the first one of the season.'' She tried comforting him, not wanting him to be down about his result.
Charles just smiled and moved on, ready to go back to his team and discuss everything. The rest of the drivers, except the top 3, followed swiftly. Y/N received a grand welcome back in her garage, it almost seemed like she had won the World Championship. She had a brief discussion about the race and her team prepared her for the post-race interviews.
Surprisingly, the interviews had gone well and not one discriminating question was asked. She mainly received a lot of congratulations and one female reporter even thanked her for her race performance as it would inspire many young girls watching it. Y/N had almost teared up during the specific interview, not expecting anyone to do that.
The rookie was walking to her driver's room when a call of her name stopped her in her tracks. Lewis jogged up to her, greeting her with a big embrace. ''Good job, you did so well!'' He told her with a huge smile on his face.
''Thank you, Lewis.'' Her head felt warm, the older man making her a little flustered.
''And this is only the beginning, you know? You showed everyone today that you deserve to be here, truly amazing!'' He continued praising her.
Y/N grinned at him. ''Thank you so much, that means a lot to me.''
''The three of us were watching it back in the cooldown room, like waiting to see in which position you came in.'' Him, Sebastian and Kimi had attentively observed the screen that replayed the race, interested in knowing how the young woman had performed.
She was touched by Lewis' words, honored that three World Champions had looked out for her and wanted to know her result. ''Oh my god, that's- wow, that's really cool.'' Y/N awkwardly laughed, not knowing how to give a proper response all of a sudden.
''Anyway, congrats and celebrate it well,'' he made a move to leave before visibly remembering something, ''oh, yeah, Seb asked me to tell you that he'd come by your driver's room.'' Lewis conveyed Sebastian's message.
''Oh, great, I'll, uh, see you in two weeks then.'' She bid him goodbye and she was on her way again, hoping the German wasn't already waiting for her there.
Fortunately for her, Sebastian wasn't there yet and she had the time to change into her casual wear so she could leave the circuit and go straight to the airport afterwards to go back home.
Three knocks on her door stopped her scroll through social media and she called for her guest to come in, not having the energy to get up from her couch.
She watched an energetic Sebastian walk into her driver's room, practically running to give her a hug. ''I told you that you could do it! P fucking 7!'' He exclaimed, excitedly.
''Congrats to you for winning!'' She retorted back, not having had the chance yet to congratulate him on his GP win.
''Thank you, honey.'' He sat down next to her on the couch.
''I would have loved to see the faces of everyone on your team the moment you passed Carlos, it must have been priceless.'' Sebastian smirked, thinking of what she had told him the day before. ''And the double overtake? You couldn't have had a better race.''
''Oh my god, I couldn't believe it, Seb! Like I finished in front of a Mercedes? Wow, just wow!'' Sebastian laughed at her enthusiasm, imagining how great she must feel now.
The winner of the day scratched his voice. ''Kimi said how nervous you looked before the race and I'm not gonna lie, I was a bit worried about you,'' he had lowered his voice, different from his loudness of before, ''but you dealt with the pressure perfectly and you didn't let it affect your race. I'm very proud of you.'' His sincerity and expression of pride almost brought tears to her eyes, the words of her idol and mentor meaning a lot to her.
''Thank you, Seb,'' a shy smile graced her face, ''that means a lot to me, I couldn't have done it without you.'' She thanked him.
''No, it was your hard work that got you here.'' He argued, not wanting to take any sort of credit for her accomplishments. ''And maybe a little of my money, but you know.'' Sebastian jokingly added, not able to help himself from teasing the younger one.
Y/N rolled her eyes at the comment. ''Always so humble! Red Bull Seb made an appearance for a second there.''
''He's still in here, I just need to keep him in check.''

I'm not scared! Colby Brock x MotoGPDriver! Reader Part 1
Plot: You made a tweet about Sam and Colby and were in a podcast and they brought up Sam and Colby where you talked about the paranormal and how it doesn't really scare you because you drive motorcycles at over 200mph.
A/N: This has been sat in my drafts for a while coz i was kinda scared to post it, coz its a new reach of people I'm looking for.
Tumblr media
It started off with a silly little tweet you'd made in the summer break when you werent racing. You didn't feel like watching old F1 or MotoGP races and there was no movie that immedielty came to mind.
So you scrolled through youtube. At first it was a documentary about the ocean, and you had to switch it out. Which is how you came across a channel called Sam and Colby, two American boys who... well you didn't actually think they had a 'thing:
Your YouTube consisted solely of vlogs and car/bike videos that you did. That was your niche. However these two didn't seem to have a specific niche, you perused them seeing that they vlogged and did challenges and prank video and even back in the day were part of vine.
The most recent things they'd been sticking too by the looks of things were these paranormal investigations. They went to these haunted places with cool gear and filmed the experience. You were very intruiged as the paranormal was something you'd believed in just never interacted with.
After watching them bring people on, and be scared shitless you knew you'd boss something like this.
You were alone in your house, drinking which is where the tweet actually came from.
Tumblr media
There was a lot of action from both fans of motorsport and YouTube fans. You of course got some hate from the tweet from the YouTube side and hence started the fued between your fans and Colby and Sam fans.
It wasn't until the podcast you went on that the duo took notice of you.
"So today I'm here in the studio with Y/N, now this I think is an intertsing podcast for both of us, because you've only been on Motorsport related ones so far correct?"
"Yes" you smile nodding. You'd actually been on a few podcasts as you really enjoyed talking to people and hearing their stories and being able to talk about your own experiences and hardships.
You started of with the generic motorsport questions, that were all angled at you being a woman in motorsport. Which you enjoyed as you knew getting to the position you had now was a hard hard feat you managed to overcome.
He then got onto more general questions about you life, which again you were happy to answer.
"I do have something that people asked me to ask when we first annouced you here and that was about the tweet with Sam and Colby?" he says looking to his notepad making sure he was keeping in his order.
"Mmmm, what about it?" you smile knowing this was going to be a thing.
"So you basically said along the lines of, if you were in a Sam and Colby video that you wouldn't be scared, why is that?" he asks tilting his head to the side.
"Well, not much scares me when i drive motorbikes at roughly 250 kmph. You know, I've come off those bikes and had my life flash before my eyes as I go into the barrier. One of my worst crashes nearly killed me, but I got back on the bike, one I healed and I won my first race back in Lusial. As part of the Red Bull family I've helped them with some crazy challanges, beat Max Verstappen in an F1 car and lots more. So i think it would genuinely take a lot to scare me!" you smile explaining your thought process behind your tweet and how you think you'd genuinely react.
"So I'm guessing you'd be like down to collab with them at some point!" he asks.
"Yeah of course, I know these things take time to plan so obviously you know with both our busy schedules it probably wouldn't be anytime soon, but you never know!" you grin and after a few more questions before the podcast ends.
It was around a week later, you were in your home gym getting some weight training in when a message dings up. You stop the current exercise your doing to check it.
It was an instagram DM from the Sam and Colby official account. You click on the notification to go onto the chat to look at what they'd messaged you.
Tumblr media
Of course you immedielty replied. You exchanged numbers with both the boy's before Colby made a group chat asking when you were free.
It was harder to find times than you expected, the next time you all would be free was during your winter break from racing. Which was risky to confirm anything, especially to their fans as anything could happen to you in that time.
You agreed on a date and time to tell your fans.
The next step was you inviting them to a race weekend, you wanted to meet them but obviously didn't have much time between races. So you invited them to your home race at Silverstone in the United Kingdom.
They decided to make it a whole thing, where they explored some haunted places across England after coming to see you at your race.
You decided to meet them at the airport first and you couldn't hold in your nerves to meet them, you never had the best people skills which is probably why you went into the career path that you did.
You waited for them in the arrivals area, it wasn't too busy due to the time of the day, just a few business men in suits. You looked around for a board to see when their plane had landed, but could find one.
"Y/N?" you hear from behind you.
A/N: I don't know what the fandom's like on here, but I just like writing about cool situations that help with writers block for writing my book! If you follow me for F1 and General Motorsports this is me branching out my writing into another hyper fixation of mine that’s been around for a while!

for an incredibly new f1 follower, what would you recommend for getting up to date with teams and racers and performances and history? apart from dts lol
oh that is a good question!!! i don't think i'm even the best person to answer this but honestly i think it all comes naturally if you pick a specific thing/team/person you're interested in and set out to learn more about that topic, because everything is so connected and with time you can fill in those knowledge gaps pretty quickly :') more under the cut:
dts is imo perfectly acceptable for learning names and faces for the first time and basically creating a vague outline of a given subject (i've said it's like using duolingo for learning a new language lol), so if you watch it and are like oh—i'm interested in charles or mercedes or learning more about technical regulations or whatever, then you can just dive deeper into that via wiki / youtube / podcasts + published media + old race archives and build up from there!
otherwise i think the main thing is just to start watching the actual races when the season gets underway, and in order to properly appreciate them then also read up on + watch videos about the technical/strategy side of the sport as well. back in the day i used to really like chain bear and i still always recommend it to anyone who asks! after that i would just seek out like... a community/server/place where other people are discussing news real-time; this could be meeting people on tumblr and twitter, but personally i'm subscribed to r/formula1 because it's the most active composite source of f1 news and Discourse. if you're reddit-averse i also just keep a big list on twitter with a bunch of random data accounts, official driver/team accounts, journalists, etc. that helps me keep up with the season in a tidy fashion—though honestly f1 journalism is so unserious that you don't really need to do that because most journos regurgitate the same three quotes in slightly different formats, so if you want to follow One Guy who won't disseminate bs info i'd recommend chris medland. or just general sport publications like autosport, motosport.com, the athletic if you're already subscribed to it (pretty lacking for f1 though since it's american lol), etc... some sites like the-race are very contentious though so i'd say just tread with caution!!! on the data side i personally enjoy fdatanalysis and f1telemetrydata (i've also used f1-tempo to do my own telemetry analysis but idk if that's useful). but again i'd highly recommend the subreddit since it keeps everything i just mentioned in one place anyway 😭
other media recs:
f1tv, if it's available in your area, has pretty much everything you need to follow f1 in its entirety. i hate to shill for paid media but i genuinely think it's good; you can watch every f1, f2, f3 session real-time, as well as go to the archives and revisit old races for each series from most seasons. it also has technical shows and a whole host of minidocs with bite-sized info that are probably less sensationalized than dts. if you don't have f1tv though then a lot of decent content is cross-posted to the f1 youtube so honestly the official channels are all pretty good for keeping up with the sport.
podcasts: if you're an auditory person then podcasts are a great way to deepdive into f1 history. personally i believe that 80% of men running f1 podcasts should be legally barred from ever having an opinion on motorsport, so i don't listen to that many, but i do enjoy the official f1 podcast beyond the grid (i listen to it on spotify but you can also find full transcripts on the f1 site) since, you know, they get official personnel on and i appreciate the wide range of personalities interviewed—from drivers to tps to various types of engineers. i've also heard good things about shift+f1, the race, and engine braking, but i haven't checked them out so i'd recommend just looking podcasts up yourself and seeing what vibes with you! though some podcasts are just like... I'll eat this because you're interviewing my guy but i would never watch/listen to you otherwise. (cough pit stop...)
books & autobiographies: again if you want to dive more into old f1, then you can always read a book!! i read jenson's autobiography life to the limit earlier and was very endeared, it's a super breezy but charming read ❤️ adrian newey's memoir is also a decent overview of a clearly brilliant and accomplished mind, i enjoyed the technical details and found his early career path especially interesting.
docus, movies, tv: there's also plenty of f1 media outside of f1tv, so you can always check those out; f1 movies aren't necessarily that accurate or frankly good but sometimes it's fun just for the Vibes and the love of the sport. for ex rush (2013) covers james hunt & niki lauda's rivalry, netflix has a schumacher (2021) doc, the brawn gp miniseries ft. jense came out last november, just things like that... some current individual drivers also have their own random miniseries so you can always seek those out, for ex i watched maxv's anatomy of a champion the other day just for the fun of it LOL.
i don't know whether any of this is helpful... but maybe other people can reply with their own recommendations!!!
also if you're interested in f2, f3, etc. then honestly just follow feeder series on whatever platform since they cover everything pretty well; feeder_series on twitter, r/f1feederseries, plus they do interview podcasts on youtube/spotify so i like watching those to keep up with young drivers. you can also watch chasing the dream for succinct f2 narratives; it used to only be on f1tv but it gets uploaded on youtube now so it's fairly accessible. lmk if you have any other questions or something specific you'd like more info about!!!

Burning Rubber
Chapter Eight
F1 Masterlist
Burning Rubber Masterlist
Word Count: 3,093
Summary: Azha gets released from the hospital and gets to show Lando a slice of her home life. She reminisces on the old times as worries about her future sink in.
Warnings: anxieties regarding future, Lando and Azha are so cringe, Lando has no rizz.
previous next
Third Person POV
Azha lay asleep in her hospital bed after being questioned by two detectives about her crash. Although she couldn’t give them much details because all she could remember was that she was home with her family. She didn’t remember the race let alone her argument with Lando or anything else that occurred that night. She didn’t want to believe the things everyone was telling her. If Nova and Sariyah couldn’t fight girls in high school, what makes police think they would be able to pull off attempted murder? She was due to be released from the hospital in the morning after the doctors had seen how much her condition was improving. Boy was she ready, she missed eating real food and missed her actual bed. Ja Khel and the group had returned home during the week to help prepare the house for her return. She would be staying downstairs until her leg had fully healed and she was able to walk again much to her dismay. They had added a wheelchair ramp at the front of the house and the back by the garage after finding out Azha would have to use one for the first six to nine months of her being home. Plus crutches as well. The girl refused to use a wheelchair unless it was an electric scooter, not wanting to have to depend on anyone to help her.
Knowing the girl she would somehow make the scooter faster than normal. Kiara had visited yesterday after hearing about the accident, the woman was furious to just be finding out but was grateful her friend and client was alive. The two would have a meeting with Formula Drift soon to discuss what would happen now considering the circumstances. Little did she know, Lando would be staying with the group. The man insisted while he boarded his flight that he stay and help with anything, it was the least he could do. Thankfully during the crash, her phone was not damaged although she was due for an upgrade she thought. Soon enough Ja Khel’s phone vibrated with a message from Lando saying he was landing soon. After replying he was on his way to get the Brit, he kissed Giana and his sisters on their heads and he left.
Azha’s POV
Opening my eyes I see the group was back but Ja Khel was missing. Hopefully he went to go get actual food, I hate hospital food. I need a greasy burger or something fatty. Not whatever the hell they think this so-called stuff is they call “food”. Although the veggies are good I can’t deny that. I would miss my nurses and doctor, I need to give them some gifts after I leave. I grabbed the remote for the tv, clicking through channels until I landed on old WWE matches from the 2000s. God Edge was such a hottie, still is who am I kidding. The long hair, the smirk, everything. He is sex appeal wrapped into one man alongside Shawn Michaels. Settling back into bed with my eyes trained on the screen, the door to my room opened. “Ah you're awake.” my nurse, Layla said. I nodded as she walked in with a cup of water and my meds. I hated taking pill medication, which makes me want to puke every time. Call me childish. I don't care. I take the cup then place the water in my mouth before swallowing the pills. I opened my mouth showing her they were taken and she nodded her head happy I was complying. She left afterwards and I went back to watching my imaginary baby father wrestle.
Third Person POV
Lando’s plane had landed just a while ago and he was now headed to the baggage claim. Soon after finding his luggage he received a text from Ja Khel letting him know he was outside waiting. He pulled his hoodie around his face hoping to leave the airport without being spotted by paparazzi or fans, not that he was ungrateful for his fans, he just didn't want to waste any more time being away from Azha. He’s done that plenty enough recently. Walking outside he instantly spots Ja Khel’s suburban. Not that it was difficult to ever find. Especially with the bass beating you could hear from the outside of the car. Lando placed his luggage in the trunk before climbing into the passenger seat. Ball w/o you by 21 Savage played through the speakers as they pulled off from the airport. “Have you eaten anything?” Ja Khel asked the younger male. The Brit shook his head no. “Perfect, Azha is getting tired of the food at the hospital so we can stop to get breakfast before heading there. I know just the place” Ja Khel responded. The pair drove and listened to more music before pulling to a quaint spot, ‘Honey Honey Cafe & Crepery’. The pair were in and out after ordering and tipping the staff then on their way to the hospital. Lando began to feel his stomach twist in anticipation, what if Azha didn't want him there? Would she be happy to see him? But the Brit didn't have time to dwell on those thoughts because he had arrived at their destination. Ja Khel stopped Lando before the two excited the vehicle, “You want to surprise her?” He asked. Lando nodded. “Okay so you take yours and her breakfast, you can walk in after me. She’ll ask where her food is and then you walk in. I know she will freak out, but it will be a good reaction.” Ja Khel explained before the two headed into the hospital. Hopefully it’ll be a good reaction, Lando thought.
Azha’s POV
God where is Ja Khel, I doubt it would have taken this long to get my discharge papers. Sighing I pull the blanket closer to me trying to stay warm. Soon enough another knock sounded through the room, I looked at the clock it read, 7:26 am, it couldn’t be my nurses checking on me since one was just here. “Hey, hey it's freedom day for you.” Ja Khel spoke walking in with some to go boxes. Finally, real food. He handed Jirani. Giana, Liana, and Keyani their breakfast before sitting down opening his. “Excuse you motherfucker, where is mine and how dare you?” I scoffed, crossing my arms like a toddler. Then another pair of footsteps walked into my room. I looked and there he stood. Lando. My heart began to beat faster and my stomach twisted. I looked at my brother then back to the Brit as he stood awkwardly shuffling from one foot to the other. Then I noticed he had two of the same boxes everyone else had. “Surprise.” Ja Khel spoke. “I don’t bite you know. You don’t have to stand there.” I whispered. Lando walked over handing me the top box before he sat in the chair next to the bed.
The group then stood to their feet and walked out deciding to give us privacy to talk. I opened the box and seen two crepes; one with strawberries, bananas, kiwis, cinnamon, and brown sugar. The other had strawberries. bananas, and what I am assuming was Nutella. “I wasn't sure which one you would like more so I got both.” Lando said. I looked at him in shock, “You didn't have to do that Lando.” I whispered, he shook his head. “I know I didn't have to, I did it because I wanted to.” He said. I began to cut them into smaller pieces before looking at his box. “What did you get?” “Nutella. strawberries. chocolate syrup and bananas.” He answered. I nodded before eating a piece of the kiwi one. I hummed in satisfaction, he smiled softly at me “Good?” He questioned after taking a bite of his. I nodded and took another piece holding it out for him. He accepted and began to chew while having a thoughtful look on his face. He nodded and then offered me a piece of his. I accepted, wow was it amazing. We ate in silence for a few more minutes before I spoke, “I’m sorry. For everything that has happened. It should have never gotten as far as it did.” He shook his head, “I should be the one apologizing. I accept yours however but still I was the one who started everything when we argued in Jamaica. I shouldn't have snapped at you. I hope you can forgive me.” He apologized. I felt my heart begin to break seeing him look so vulnerable. “How about we start over? Hi I’m Azha, nice to meet you.” I asked, sticking out my hand. He placed his hand in mine shaking it and nodded, “Hi I’m Lando nice to meet you as well Azha.” We smiled at each other, feeling the weight be lifted off our shoulders.
We had finished our breakfast, stealing bites of the other’s and were now watching Moana, my favorite Disney movie alongside Princess and The Frog, on his phone. My head laid on his chest as the part where Moana said goodbye to her grandmother played. I sniffled feeling the tears well up in my eyes. “Are you crying?” Lando whispered while keeping his attention on the movie. “No.” I sniffled again, I felt him wrap his arms around me pulling us closer together. “It’s alright love, her grandmother knows she's doing the right thing. She’ll be by her side.” He tried to comfort me. I wiped my eyes, “I know but it doesn't make it any less sadder.” I replied as he began to draw random designs comfortingly into my skin. “How long are you staying?” I questioned. “For however long you let me,” he replied. The word ‘Forever’ rang out in my brain. I nodded in response, “You’ll finally see my house.” I told him. He pauses the movie and looks at me, “The house we’ve been at isn’t yours?” He asked, I smiled and shook my head no. “It’s Ja Khel’s house. But we all agreed it would be better if I stayed at my own place while I recovered so I could get some actual rest and not have to worry about hyper kids. Which is understandable, until I’m able to use my leg at least 75% I won’t really see the kids.” I explained. Lando nodded, “So who is taking care of you?” He asked, “Liana will be staying there too. So there's three of us. Jirani and Keyani live down the road.” I shrugged. I hadn’t really had the chance to look at him fully in depth when he walked in my hospital room. He looked beautiful. Albeit dorky with his glasses but they accentuated his beautiful watercolor eyes. “Is there something wrong with my face?” He whispered. I blushed knowing I had been caught, “No. Nothing, perfectly fine.” I say before grabbing his phone and resuming our movie.
Finally at 1:43 pm I am being released! Not that I am ungrateful for being here, I’m just ready to finally be home. And I know that the hospital staff are probably tired of me. I was in the very back with Lando so I could have my leg laid straight out with Jirani, Keyani, and Liana in the row in front of us. And of course, Ja Khel driving with Giana next to him. Once again my head was laid on Lando’s chest as we watched a random movie on Netflix with his arms wrapped around me.
Skip Car Ride
I felt someone lightly shaking my shoulder, opening my eyes. I see Liana leaning over the seat smirking. I tried to sit up but a force around my waist stopped me. Looking around I see that I was laying on Lando. I felt my face begin to heat up. I didn't even realize we had fallen asleep. Granted it was a six hour drive back home, “You just going to lay in your prince charming’s arms or are you going to get out?” Liana whispered. I told her she could go ahead and then leaned down to Lando’s ear. “Lando, you've got to let go, we're here.” I whispered, he groaned and held me tighter mumbling to himself. I rolled my eyes, “Lando, I will punch you in your dick if you don't let go.” I said. His eyes opened, “I knew you always wanted a piece.” He lazily smirked. I groaned, “Yeah sure whatever helps you sleep. Now come on, I've missed being in my own bed.” I said crawling off his lap to grab my crutches after he let go. “Ah so you’re saying I wasn't comfy enough for you?” He teased opening the door and climbing out of the car. I took a breath before trying to get out as well. I yelped as I misjudged my step, bracing for impact I closed my eyes. After feeling nothing I opened them seeing Lando had caught me. He shook his head, “Falling for me I see? Always so impatient, I was coming to help you if you would’ve waited another second.” He said as he set me down to close the door. “Well for an F1 driver, you took too long.” I replied. He chuckled and shook his head then turned towards my house. His mouth dropped in awe, “This is yours?” He pointed, I smiled softly. “It’s no Monaco styled place but yes, this is my place. Come on, I’ll give you the tour as the others help Liana get her stuff in.” I say as we slowly venture our way inside.
“And finally here is your room. You can decorate it however you want to make it feel more like home if you'd like.” I speak opening the door to the upstairs guest room. He walked in taking in his surroundings. I hobble in and sit on the small sofa at the end of the bed, “You also have your own bathroom through there.” I pointed to the west side of the room. He looked back at me, “You’re joking right? A walk in closet and my own bathroom?” He questioned, I nodded and he opened the door to the bathroom and I could hear him gasp. “Is this the master bedroom or something?” He asked. I giggled, “No, when I was having this place built I felt that the guest bedrooms should feel like it’s a masters. I want my guests to feel like it’s their home in a sense.” I explained. He came back out and moved his luggage by the closet, “Then I have to see your room. I can’t believe you until you prove that this isn’t your actual room.” He said. I shrugged my shoulders, “Whatever makes you feel better.” I say and we make our way down the hall.
I sit on my bed as he looks around my room and en suite. “Satisfied yet Norris?” I questioned. He nodded, still having that astonished look on his face, “Just wait until you see the backyard.” I say gesturing to the window. “You hungry?” I asked the Brit, he nodded and we made our way back downstairs. Jirani, Ja Khel, and the girls all stood in the kitchen talking. “About time you two, we figured you had made the poor man get lost.” Jirani said. I smiled and shook my head, “The house is not that big Jirani, you dramatic shithead.” I say and move to the pantry to see what I could fix. “What do you think you’re doing?” Giana asked. I turned towards her, “Cooking?” I stated. She shook her head, “No, you're going to sit down and rest that leg of yours. I’ll cook dinner for you guys.” She said taking the ingredients from my hands. “Giana I am perfectly capable-.” I tried to speak. She waved me off, “I know you are, go outside and enjoy your backyard. How long has it been since you've been here?” She asked and I remained silent. “Exactly.” she spoke. I sighed and looked at Lando, “Want to see the backyard?” I asked. He nodded and we walked off. Lando looked just as shocked seeing the landscape. I decided to head for the fire pit as he explored. I sigh sitting down, it felt good to be home. I’m glad Giannis never had the chance to taint this place. Selling that small place to a lovely family and moving here to the country was the best decision I could make once this house was finally built. My siblings always asked why I'm never here, a huge house gets lonely when you're the only one there. Not that I am ungrateful for this place, it's a dream come true. I just hate being alone.
Interrupting my thoughts Lando had finally joined me, “How much did this place cost?” He questioned. I look at him as the night lights around the pool make his eyes shimmer, “Let’s just say a lot of money. That’s why I street race so I can have the extra money aside from my salary drifting. I don't know what I'm going to do now that I can't do either and Formula starts in April but we are supposed to start training in February.” I reply before looking up at the evening sky. I felt him grab my hand, “It’ll work out, you’ll be able to start your season on time. I know you're a fighter. If I wasn't allowed to give up on myself this season you're not allowed to either. I won’t let you.” He whispered. I squeezed his hand lightly, “Thank you for being here, it really means a lot.” I told him. He nods and stands, “I’ll be here until you tell me to fuck off. Let’s go eat so you can rest. I am taking you to physical therapy tomorrow and some other places. No I’m not telling you because they're surprises.” I raise an eyebrow as he helps me stand and grabs my crutches for me, “And who signed off on this?” I asked as we began our journey to the house. He grinned cheekily, “I did. Do you need a permission slip signed?” He teased. I lift my crutch to smack him but he dodges laughing. “I am two years younger than you Norris, watch it.” I smile as he laughs more. Oh how I missed hearing it. Little did I know the adventures that would happen in the upcoming days.

Regardless of who you support or who you want to win, I think something that is not talked about enough is the fact that ever since last year most F1 news have just been negative.
And it's not like it's unjustified.
Not only the hugely controversial championship, the attacks from both RedBull (and also Mercedes to a degree), the deeply concerning safety standards, the controversial Spa race, the now more and more lack luster disregards for the rules, the debate about the budget cost cap, etc.
And that's only the stuff openly talked about because a lot of people pick up on it.
Now the race calendar which not only is way too much for any team personal or driver but also not at all according to the "climate change" goals of F1 and the continuing rise of way too expensive race tickets that are not at all making F1 more accessible to the general public.
Not to mention the continuing rising reports of all multitudes of assaults.
F1 since last year has not had a single good headline that has been published that was bigger than just the sport.
I think it's time we stop talking about how individual incidents are very bad or not and start asking ourselves how much longer we as the working class can even afford to have F1 as a genuine hobby.
As someone German who enjoys F1 is no longer accessible in my region. The only way I can watch it is by having a Sky membership. Sure for some of you that might be normal but basically since the 80s F1 used to be on RTL, a channel that so many German households had access to. It isn't anymore.
I have heard fans talk about how ticket prizes have tripled.
We are getting more sprint races, weird forma of qualy, street races etc.
This is a huge problem.
For years now F1 has been inaccessible to "normal drivers" meaning those without money, sponsors or not part of a driver academy. And as we have seen with Nyck, Callum etc. there's driver who either can't afford the step up or simply will never get it because other factors are more valued.
It's no secret that over the years F1 has more than ever become an elitist racing series that is not at all fully about talent otherwise we would have a vastly different grid.
And while this has always been a problem I think many of you truly aren't seeing the bigger picture that is here.
Because it's also now becoming an elitist hobby that no one but rich people can afford. Hell,I come from a good middle class family and travelling to some of the nearest races I would probably pay the equivalent to what I pay for a 2-4 week location. I could never afford a race unless I somehow get a high paying job.
And with the rising prices of inflation I don't think I could even afford a luxury like sky. Sure maybe I can but there's so many people already struggling to even pay rent who just can't.
With the races only going to more popular places, old tracks in countries with such big F1 memory just simply not being picked up, there's also the aspect of who actually can even visit a race close to them.
Now there's also all these fancy new ideas that literally no one wants to see.
So when are we as fan finally going to see the bigger picture that the beloved sport we are seeing is more and more becoming a celebrity and rich people spectacle that is literally formed by the governing body to be as fun as possible while completely ignoring anyone's safety?
When are we going to talk about the horrendous head that is the FIA choosing to portray F1, a sport with such rich history that lives on the fans, as some sort of spectacle like WWE?
When are we going to talk about how they bend the rules to manipulate race outcomes however they like (and now this isn't just talking about AD)?
When are we going to talk about how they us slogans to make themselves seem so progressive and inclusive but are doing absolutely nothing to protect the vulnerable targeted fans?
When are we going to talk about how the way F1 is currently run is not in any way sustainable unless they only want to cater to the rich people?
When are we going to talk about how F1 is continuing to push the fans away and completely forgetting that the sport lives on the passion of the fans?

vro0m’s rewatch - 157/310
2015 British GP
And we're back again in Silverstone. I still only have the race available, and it's in low res so sorry for the gif quality. And so I now have it all in better quality so it's all fixed, let's see what the prerace build-up has in store for us.
Before quali, the race directors warned the drivers about the track limits. Guess how many drivers saw at least one of their times deleted for track limits violations? Eleven. Anyway it was, unsurprisingly, a Mercedes front row with Lewis on pole. Williams locked the second row, Massa ahead of Valtteri.
And Lewis talked about his pole lap with Brundle. He's ahead of "his nemesis mister Vettel" in terms of number of poles, Brundle says. Lewis says it's crazy then chuckles like what Brundle said just registered and says he can't believe it. He credits the team and the car. They talk about very specific things in very specific corners, I'm not gonna go into details.
Of course we get a Lewis segment, I mean it's the British gp. Johnny went to learn how to drift with him. They're laughing their asses off. They ended up in the gravel. Istg they're laughing so much they seem fucking high. Then it turns into an interview.
Tumblr media
Johnny asks why Lewis wasn't there for testing. He says he had health things he needed to get checked out and it was more important to him and also he doesn't feel like he gets a lot out of testing, but that's not why he didn't do it. His hair is a STRUGGLE jesus. It looks so dry. Johnny asks why the team has been so incredible. Lewis says it's been a year and half of dominance and such a special journey he's taken with this team. Collectively everyone is doing an amazing job. It's been his best year in terms of qualifying so far. Johnny says hopefully they fixed the clutch issue that fucked up his start in Austria. What about the track? He says he's been watching Nigel Mansel win at this track, and Johnny himself. Johnny says something about Nigel something one second a lap. Lewis repeats : "one second a lap?!" They're talking over each other I can't understand. "I don't know where he got that one second," Lewis says and they laugh. Then he says it's the best feeling when you win, when a Brit wins that race. It's hard to describe that feeling. Johnny describes the sea of flags. Lewis says British fans in general for whatever sport are so enthusiastic. He thinks Nigel is right and the fans do give you an extra boost. He says he doesn't know how much it's worth, maybe it's that second. They laugh again.
And we cut straight to his side track interview. Natalie asks how energised he is by the support he's getting here.
Tumblr media
He says it never gets old, they just went around the track and there's no blank area, the fans are everywhere. He hopes they can do it for them today. She asks if the pole felt sweeter because he had to work for it, it hasn't been the smoothest of weekends. He says he never wants anything done easily, he likes to do things the hard way.
Tumblr media
Nico was doing really good as well. But the weather is getting better, there's so many fans there, so many British flags and caps, "guys I appreciate it, I hope I can do it for you today!" Natalie says they have a girl right there who's turning 21 that day. Apparently he's her favourite driver. But she's busy talking with Jenson at the moment. How did she get the opportunity to be there in the first place, I don't know lol. He ducks around and goes to see the crowd. Natalie taps on her shoulder. "You've just missed Lewis." The girl turns around horrified. "Nooooo!" – "You've just missed him!" Natalie repeats. He's climbing the fence to the fans in the background. Waving. He jumps back down and walks back to Natalie. We don't see what happens with that one girl in the end.
On the way to the grid, Nasr's Sauber stops on the track. He can't seem to get it started again.
On F1's YouTube channel I've found a video of the drivers' fan meetings and a segment about Lewis so let's watch that!
On stage, Johnny asks Lewis if he's gonna do it this time, after his troubles in Austria. Lewis puts his hand in his pocket with a sigh and starts "you know…" but the crowd cheers so loudly he chuckles. "I can't believe how many people are here!" he says instead. Nico is expecting his first child btw, I didn't know that. He gets a lot of cheers too. A girl in the crowd asks Lewis who's his favourite team-mate. He says he doesn't think anyone has a favourite team-mate lol. "No one likes a team-mate. I'm kidding." Then he's off the stage throwing caps in the crowd. He signs autographs and says he's never seen so many British fans.
In his segment, Lewis is in Brackley talking about last year's championship. He says it feels like yesterday. Seeing the car he won with there brings back a lot of memories. "But it's strange cause the world never stops, it keeps going and you kinda have to move on so… So quickly to focusing on the next year, but it's an amazing feeling, 2 time world champion." He says at times his friends remind him, or they'll say he didn't drive too bad that weekend and he'll say "yeah well… I am world champion." He laughs. "And then they'd say 'no, TWO'" and it reminds him like that.
Tumblr media
They're looking at the 2014 trophy wall. The journalist asks if the trophies have come to mean something different to him over the years. He says they mean a "huge amount" to him. He says it's the end result of all that you go through with the engineers and the training and in your psyche and then the race itself. "And when you stand up there this is like the proudest moment." The journalist asks what trophy would catch his attention there in terms of races. He doesn't think long. "It probably would be…" and he put his finger on one of the glass doors. "Bahrain," the journalist says. "Bahrain," he repeats with a smile. He says he wasn't the quickest in the race and to be able to manoeuvre the way he did around Nico even though he was faster was the greatest feeling.
They walk to the W05 and he says it's probably his favourite car in his career." I actually just wanna take it home," he says. "But they would never allow that!" he adds with a chuckle. He explains that he had to adapt the ergonomics of the car when he arrived because what Nico had did not match his centre of gravity etc. "So when I moved that, it was interesting," he smiles again, "because then Nico followed. Same position and everything." He also says he does his moulding himself, the foam shaving etc, and doesn't let anyone else do it because he knows how he wants it. He enjoys doing it. Then the steering wheel is about simplicity. He says the engineers want to give them so much information and his job is to say what he needs and doesn't, what he'll try and test to decide if he needs it or not and then he decides how and where to put it on the steering wheel and how it appears on his screen. Nico's buttons aren't in the same order.
They talk about the last few laps in Abu Dhabi last year. The journalist says of course Nico had problems then but Massa was getting closer and closer. He asks what it was like for him. Lewis says Massa was never really a threat, he could answer to him. He says 2007 in China, he only had to finish 5th but wanted to win, and was racing to win. (Remember what happened? It was the penultimate race of the season and Lewis could win the title right there, as he said, by finishing 5th. It was a wet race. And halfway through, his tyres were gone from how much he was pushing, he was losing grip. He tried to pit but ended up in the gravel and couldn't get out anymore. It was a terrible DNF.) He says if he'd known what he knows now, he would have focused on winning the championship more than winning the race. Then in Abu Dhabi 2014, in these last three laps, he knew Nico wasn't in contention for the race win anymore and he knew he just had to bring the car home. The journalist asks if he was talking to the car. He hums. "Sometimes. Sometimes I've done that, yeah." But he can't remember if he did it in that race. But he's absolutely done that some times. "You kind of rub the tub 'come on we can do it, we can do it, we can make it'". He says there's a special bond between the driver and the car as the car keeps them safe and you work with it to achieve your goals. He says he'll miss that bond when he stops racing. Then they talk about the bond he has with the British fans and he says he truly believes the energy they send makes a real difference.
Tumblr media
Lewis reports poor grip out of his grid box. Worrying for the start.
And they're racing!
Oh my god what the absolute fuck? Massa takes the lead? And Valtteri takes P2? What happened to these Williams? No, Lewis maintains P2 but he's wheel to wheel with Bottas! Valtteri is indeed ahead!!! WHAT IS GOING ON. At the back Maldonado and Grosjean made contact and went wide. Jenson is trapped in the gravel and Lewis just overtook Valtteri for P2. Safety car out.
Jenson is out, Grosjean is out. Alonso pits. It's a bad one, they struggle to take his nose off. Maldonado has also stopped after all. That's 3 DNFs in one lap again. So both McLarens actually made contact which is the reason for both the stop and Jenson's DNF.
The safety car is coming in. Lewis is basically ON Massa’s rear tyres he's so close. He attacks but locks up. He goes wide, and Valtteri overtakes him again! He's now defending against Nico. After a few laps, Lewis finally sets the fastest lap. He's put Valtteri back in DRS range. It's on. Valtteri himself is only half a second behind his team-mate but then he's informed he's not allowed to race him for now. They say the same thing to Massa, adding that they have to pull away from the Mercedes together. That seems dangerous at the moment. We're told Valtteri is complaining that he has more pace and Ted agrees he's Williams' best chance. And just then, on lap 10, he attacks Massa.
So that's Massa, Valtteri right on him, Lewis 0.9 behind, Nico over a second further then Hulkenberg, Raikkonen, Kvyat, Seb, Perez and Sainz for P10. We hear Valtteri's engineer repeat he's not to attack and Valtteri says he has more pace, asks if he can overtake and says he can do it on the back straight. The answer comes shortly after : it has to be a "really clean move" and he has to pull away once in the lead. Valtteri doesn't let him repeat. "Copy." (It's hot, sorry not sorry, we love assertive Valtteri in this house.)
He can't make it on the next lap though, but both Williams are still faster than the Mercs. Interesting. Massa goes wide but still, Valtteri is behind. The Mercedes mechanics are readying themselves?! They go back in. Seb pits though. Daniel complains of a loss of power. Valtteri attacks again, he's so close! They need to let him through, come on. Lewis is called in.
It's lap 20. 2.4 stop! Great job! He's out in P4. Massa and Nico come in as a result. They're side by side in the exit! Massa stays ahead of him although Lewis is virtually in the lead. Valtteri pits. Lewis is in the actual lead and Nico attacks Valtteri for P3, Valtteri stays ahead! The crowd is going wild for Lewis. Daniel retires his car. Now both Williams are told it's a race to the end including against each other. They're announcing possible rain before the end of the race and indeed dark clouds are gathering. Oh we also lost Verstappen at some point? Okay.
On lap 30, then, Lewis is 5 seconds in the lead ahead of Massa, Valtteri is 1.4 seconds behind him, and Nico 0.6 seconds further down. Behind them it's now Raikkonen, Seb, Kvyat, Hulkenberg, Sainz and Perez. The rain should hit in 20 minutes and be an actual downfall. That might change things. Nico is told to give it everything. Yellow flags, Sainz slows down. That's the second Toro Rosso probably DNFing, yep. He's stopped. Virtual Safety Car. Here we go again.
And it starts raining.
Lewis : "So far it has stopped." Bono : "Nobody's stopped yet." Lewis : "No : the rain has stopped." But he might just be in a different part of the track because the Williams are struggling now and Valtteri goes wide while Nico closes on him but Nico goes wide as well! The Mercedes mechanics are getting prepared. Valtteri calls for a pit for the second time but his engineer maintains the rest of the track is dry and it has stopped raining. Seb overtakes Raikkonen for P6. Raikkonen pits. Nico overtakes Valtteri. Ted says if you believe the radar the shower has indeed passed and Bono says so as well to Lewis, who just went wide. He adds the next one should be 5 minutes away and light.
It's lap 40 and Lewis is 5.5 seconds ahead of Massa, himself 3 seconds ahead of Nico. Valtteri is of course P4, Seb P5, Kvyat P6, Hulkenberg P7, Raikkonen now P8, Perez P9 and Ericsson is currently P10. Nico is closing on Massa very quickly or rather Massa is losing a lot of time. Nico overtakes him. And very quickly Lewis is losing insane amounts of time as well, as he says it started raining again, and Nico is reducing that gap very very quickly. And by that I mean 2 seconds a lap. LEWIS PITS fuck he says he has no grip! It's raining harder and he gets the inters, Seb does as well, is it the right decision? Nico wants to come in as well now. There's umbrellas in the crowd. It's a 3.4 stop for Nico and Williams are stacking their cars, Valtteri is gonna lose out in the process. No! He actually did not have to wait at all! His stop was even quicker than Massa's!
Anyway, that's Lewis back in the lead 8.7 ahead of Nico, ahead of Seb! 5 laps to go. Nico is losing time on Lewis. Yellow flags, it's a Marussia going off and joining back without a front wing. Raikkonen has to stop again because he put the inters too early.
It's the end of the race!
And Lewis WINS! Again! Ahead of Nico and Seb!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Niki says nobody can complain anymore after such an incredible race (remember at the time there's a lot of talk about F1 being boring). Ted asks who decided to pit Lewis right at the time he did because it was absolutely perfect timing. He doesn't really answer, he just says thank god. Lewis does a donut lol.
In the cool down room, he's out of breath. He woos as he sets down his helmet. "The rain came…" he says. And he sighs. Nico is sipping water in a chair, Seb comes to shake his hand. (sorry for the gifs glitching, that’s from the video, nothing I can do.)
Tumblr media
Then Lewis walks to Nico to shake his. "Good job !" he says.
OH MY GOD IT'S BONOOOO YESSS Lewis finally turns around and sees him as Bono tells him something that I can't make out ("it was a lot harder than it should be, innit?" I think) . "Aww dude!" Lewis exclaims as he goes straight in for a hug with much pats on the back.
Tumblr media
"So happy you're here man." – "That was brilliant," says Bono. Lewis goes back to his hair. Nico talks to Seb in German so Lewis goes back to Bono.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lewis thanks his fans. He says he was gunning the whole way and he really wanted to do it for them. He's thankful for the support, he could see them through the corner of his eye every lap. The interviewer asks him about the start. He thinks it was due to poor grip, but it made the race even more exciting for the fans. He says for the first time in his career he made the perfect decision with his pit stop.
Tumblr media
Then after the two others' interviews, he's asked if he has a message for the fans who came to see him. He says "hum… My Mom's down here!" and the interviewer waves his hand "hi mom!"
Tumblr media
He says he's elated, "you can't imagine how happy I am." He says he started tearing up on his last lap. "Really hoping that I could hold on to it for you guys." He says he felt them all the way. He finishes by saying he'll keep pushing for the championship and "thank you so much for all the support, now let's party!"
Postrace, Valtteri said he was sure he could have pulled away if he was in front, but he also said that "no one should let anyone by. That's not racing, but it would have been nice to have been able to race when I had the best opportunities."
There was a minor controversy surrounding the moment the merc mechanics came out to the pits and then back in, which Toto admitted was "a bit of a game", because according to sporting regs, the mechanics are only allowed in the pit lane for pit stops. In the midst of it there was a text from Susie Wolff to her husband apparently saying "you guys think you can fool us, ha, ha, ha." Anyway nothing came out of it but some fans were calling for a penalty on twitter or something.
Lewis showed up in the media pen with the trophy.
Tumblr media
His name is not etched on it yet. He's buzzing. He says it was one of the trickiest races he's had for a long time but it was fantastic. He says it's fortunate it was a difficult start for the both of them and not just him. He was eager to get Massa at the restart but went deep. He couldn't overtake those guys. Great pit stop. And then it rained. "I was like 'oh my god'" he groans with a smile.
Tumblr media
He says it's difficult because when you're the first car you're the first to test everything out, to feel out what the track's doing. But he kept seeing the crowd from the corner of his eye and didn't wanna drop it for them. And then he came in for the wets just at the right time. (He's beaming, that one decision was really something. He looks so utterly satisfied with himself hehe.) "When I came out though I'm thinking 'I HOPE that it does rain'" he says with a chuckle.
Tumblr media
He sighs. He says those last laps, especially the final one, he felt really emotional. Just hoping he could keep on the track for everyone. Natalie asks if the perfectly timed pit stop was genius or luck. He says there's nothing genius about it and he also doesn't think it was luck. He says you can just see as you go how much is raining and what parts of the circuit are getting wet and he had info from the engineers. He says it was just "for once" the right call. Sometimes you get it right, sometimes you get it wrong. She asks if he was surprised by the Williams' start and their straight line speed. He says not the straight line speed, they've always had that. He says the Mercedes had a lot of wheelspin yesterday already, although his clutch actually performed really well, it was a grip problem. They'll analyse it to see what that was but, he smiles, he's happy with the clutch that he chose and will use it in the next race.
Tumblr media
She says interestingly he and the team said the Ferraris and Williams wouldn't be a threat today but it looked like at one point they might have been. He says with the Williams, it's a medium and high speed circuit and you can't follow. But he got close anyway and then he says something about traffic when he got out of the pits. She asks for a final word on the fans. They've been the best this weekend as they are every year. He does honestly believe they have the best fans in the world here, whatever the sport is. The energy was electric.
Okay so now that I've watched the full broadcast I'm unsure where that was from because I didn't see it in it, maybe it was post quali idk but here's something I found before I had access to the full broadcast :
I've found the post race interviews but the quality's too poor to make gifs. Ted says it's difficult to stay focused and do what he's supposed to do and stay focused on what everyone wants aka for him to win the race. Lewis says he thinks what's important is to focus on what you want rather than what everyone else wants. So he does his own thing and of course his goal is to win the championship but that doesn't mean he can't do anything else outside F1 and he thinks it's strange how some people feel like that's the way it is. He says he's not doing anything particularly different this year compared to the previous years although he might be more visible this year. "I would say I'm enjoying myself more this year." Ted says he didn't ask about him doing other things. He asks if he's read thing about that. Lewis answers something but the mic isn't with him so I don't hear. He says something about Ted talking about focus and doing other things this weekend, "are you not?". Ted is genuinely baffled. "No, no," he says in a higher pitched voice. "I was just asking… I don't know, were you talking about people asking you about where, why…" Lewis is talking again but I can't hear. It's weird and confusing. I didn't understand Ted’s question at the start either, I thought I'd miss some of it. Lewis says he thought he meant about how he balanced his life with racing. Ted says again "no, no" and finally clarifies he meant how he balances the demands at his home grand prix. Lewis throws his head back "ooohhh…", smiles, looks at someone on the side and laughs. Ted goes on saying he doesn't get the same attention here than, say, in Malaysia. I see Lewis mouth "of course" and he gives him the mic. "I don't feel any particular demands here," he says. "I just feel it's, like a super positive weekend. This is the weekend where you know you're gonna have– it's gonna be like 130'000 people here, it's probably gonna be more over the weekend and you know that a good portion of them, a large portion of them, are there for the Brits. I want, you know, myself and Jenson and the guys to go out there and do the best that we can and at least one of us come out with a, you know, with the nation's flag at the top next to P1. So that's, you know– there's no real negative, there's no negative at all coming here. Naturally there's pressure within yourself because you want to do way better than perhaps you do in other places." Ted says he wanna go back to what he was saying earlier about doing other things than F1. I understand that he apparently missed a testing day or something. Ted asks if there was a reason why he asked to be excused from it. Mmh. Dangerous territory. Lewis tilts his head, adjusts his sunglasses, answers immediately. "You know I had– I had some doctor uh, some doctor checkups that I had erm, which I felt was more valuable– actually, actually it was, it was more valuable for me to get done and so that's why I chose not to do the test." Ted pushes his luck : "did it matter that Nico got track time instead?" Lewis answers : "Erm… I don't personally feel so."
We cut back to the broadcast and Ted says "that was slightly awkward with Lewis Hamilton wasn't it? I think he thought I was asking a different question but he obviously is defensive. He was with Pharrell Williams the first day of the Austrian test, he put that on social media so he is gonna get asked when he makes on twitter things public." He's saying all that to Craig Slater, who says Paddy Lowe has been asked a couple of times about Lewis’ whereabouts and had to make excuses for him, "and try and explain, maybe without revealing the truth, why he wasn't there." He also points out that him then having apparently a medical issue is interesting.
Ohhhh Carmen is in the team photo 🥺🥰
Tumblr media
Look at her talking with Bono 🥺
Tumblr media
🥺🥺🥺
Lewis is swamped by the journalists and cameras but climbs the barriers either way to salute the fans. They're ROARING.
And Lewis is finally back for one last interview with them. He jokes with Johnny that he was driving better today than the other day when they were together. They laugh. He says that drifting experience definitely made a difference for him today. The crowd behind him is chanting his name. He says he loves racing and when the guys passed him at the start he was actually excited for a "natural race". They joke some more about the drifting.
Tumblr media
He's asked to talk about the start and he's interrupted by how loud the crowd is being. He chuckles and he explains the whole wheelspin thing again but behind him they're still chanting and they cheer every time he briefly turns around to smile at them.
Tumblr media
Johnny asks about the rain and the pit stop call. He confirms it was his call. He says he was trying to stay out as long as he could but he could see more and more droplets. He says he doesn't know if the people at home know, when you're driving through the rain it looks like it's pouring but in some places it's not. And then in other places it's worse and when you get there you start aquaplaning and it's scary, he says with the usual huge grin he has for scary things. It was getting slippery so that's when he made the call. Simon says they drew straws for who was gonna interview him because both Johnny and Hill have their names on the trophy. He says only 2 other Brits apart from him have their names on it three times : Jim Clark and Nigel Mansel. Does it mean a great deal to him? It does, being a part of British history and of this race's history. He turns around to talk about the fans. "We got the best fans here, man, it's crazy." The trophy holds so much history (it's one they can't keep btw, they have one they can take home but this one stays there) he knows that way after his time they're gonna be a part of it, he says to Johnny who's holding it. He says having the Hamilton name on it, he's proud of what he and his family achieved to be up there with it. Simon says he has to chase down Jim Clark's five wins, that's the next target, then he asks what he's gonna do tonight. He says he's gonna stay there for a few days but he doesn't have anything planned for tonight. "I'm gonna have a good meal that's for sure um… I'll have some sweets, and I might have a drink tonight." Johnny hands the trophy over, and Lewis walks to the barriers and climbs up to lift it up over his head for the crowd.

If you don’t mind, can I ask what’s problematic about the grid dad thing?
umm okay so i don’t think it’s like “problematic” in the cancel culture sense, but i do take issue with several facets of the term, and i was omw outside and annoyed when i made the original post so. brevity took precedence over nuance. discourse under the cut eeee
we hear it all the time about seb. seb with his grid kids, grid dad this, and grid dad that. on the surface, i suppose there’s nothing insidious about it—after all, the man IS a father, and it’s not a stretch to think he’d feel some paternal-esque emotions about the younger drivers, particularly any he might see himself reflected in, like charles. god knows i feel similarly about my friends who are younger than me at uni. however, it’s when you think about the implications of the term, as well as how it’s been used most frequently, that it starts to rub one the wrong way.
the thing is: sebastian vettel is not the father of anybody on that grid. he is not a chaperone at a birthday party. he is a driver in his own right with his own ambitions. he is more than a one-dimensional father figure in a fictional world. he doesn’t owe any of the younger drivers anything. also—he’s not that old?? daniel is a couple years younger, lewis a couple years older, and nobody is calling them “grid dad” with the same fervour.
the closest comparison i can think of is that the term is doing to him what cars 3 did to lightning mcqueen, but if u haven’t watched cars 3, that might not make sense. it’s like, it’s the prescribed cottage core pacifist aesthetic that bugs me and whenever people use it, it’s almost always to fit their characterization that he’s already stepped aside and wants to see others win more than himself. which, if u have seen any of his race weekend interviews, is not true. i’m constantly disappointed over the blatant fanonization, uwu-ificiation, what have you, of this man. from shit like “sebu is SO CUTE” (and can we talk about how that contributes to infantilizing east asian language/culture at large) to this grid dad stuff, it’s like people don’t see him as a grown fucking man who is his own person. it’s dehumanizing: “grid dad” makes him a caricature and a combination of fictional tropes.
the biggest point of contention, i think, is when it comes to mick, charles, or max, but mainly mick, just because of the history there. in general, i dislike pigeonholing him into a fatherly role for the Kids Who Need A Dad. he’s not a stand-in for michael. charles would never dream of replacing his father. we don’t know jack shit about max’s childhood situation except what he’s chosen to disclose. tbh the way people make grief porn out of these three is quite frankly discomfiting. like maybe it’s just me but i don’t think their lives are some toy story 3 tearjerker to poke and prod at insensitively?? i’m getting off track.
seb being touted as mick’s adopted father considering the actual situation with michael is disrespectful at best to both of them imo. mick, because his father is still alive and still his father, and seb, because he’s not some retired driver wanting to pass on his legacy. he’s there and he’s racing and he wants to win. barbi wrote a good post about this specifically that u can find here: https://brawn-gp.tumblr.com/post/664851672503336960/wait-let-me-explain-myself-a-bit-better-because
anyway i hope this clears some things up and adds some nuance to my previous statement! the fact that the f1 channel has actively decided to perpetuate this idea is. offputting, like they’ve also decided he’s washed and are only paying lip service to what they think will get clicks. but that's just an opinion from an obnoxious seb stannie :)

Why I Started Watching F1
I am quite emotional right now after watching the documentary, so my inner writer decided to come out of her indefinite hiatus, and make a weird introspection/retrospection.
My father started watching both cycling and F1 on broadcasts of Serbian channels during the late 80s in communist Romania. I am pretty sure the broadcasts stopped at some point and only resumed on different stations by the time the 90s rolled around. When my parents started dating, my mom began watching F1 as well. She was a Senna fan while my dad supported Michael. She was just telling me about the crash last week while watching Monza, as she thought that was where it happened.
My parents got married in 1995, the same year Michael and Corinna got married. I was born in 1997, the same year Gina was born. Growing up, one name kept popping up time and time again: Michael Schumacher. It was said in a weird combination of German and Romanian, the way the local commentators were pronouncing it. I have vivid memories of watching a red car on TV with my dad, although I am pretty sure I found the idea of racing quite boring at the time. My mom always dressed me in Bennetton, and I remember not understanding why she seemed to like this particular store so much.
In December 2013, I was in a rush to get ready for a private math lesson. I’ve had had a bad midterm just before Christmas so I wanted to get back on my game during the holidays. I remember coming downstairs in a hurry. My parents were eating and the TV was on on some news channel. The breaking news logo popped on announcing the ski accident and that Michael was taken to the hospital. My mom was shocked and my dad was speechless. I was just worried I was going to be late. I think we all thought he was going to be okay. Later, they announced he was in a coma. In passing, while trying to navigate sophomore year, I remember thinking he may still be okay, almost in the same way Michael said about Senna, a coma doesn’t necessarily mean something bad. People wake up from comas all the time and they are fine.
And then I forgot about it completely. The Romanian news channels didn’t give any updates and I wasn’t following any international media. My dad had stopped watching F1 consistently at this point, instead focusing on cycling. I finished high school, I became an engineer after graduating from Uni. I got my first job, started a master’s and began looking into academia. I forgot F1 even existed. I just remember sometimes hearing a TV host I like talk about a guy named Lewis Hamilton who was really good and also apparently a very interesting person.
And then this year, on August 4th, I was hanging out with my parents, and my dad mentions that one of his coworkers took his young kids to watch the Hungaroring in Budapest. My mom says to turn on the TV and watch as well. I was scrolling through my phone, and I didn’t particularly care.
I hear my mom say “Alonso’s still racing?”. I thought hah, I think I’ve heard that name before.
After a while, my mom says, “Verstappen? That can’t be right, is it the son?”
My dad confirms it, and then my mom goes, “Is Schumacher junior racing as well?”
Again my dad confirms it. I perked up at that. And I remembered the accident. I say out loud, “I wonder how his dad is.” Neither of my parents had given it a thought since 2013. So I open Google, and search Michael Schumacher condition. I couldn’t believe it. I’d genuinely thought all those years that somehow, he was fine. And then I saw somewhere that Mick was with him when it happened. That broke me.
For a 14-year-old to have to witness that, reading that Michael was conscious for about an hour afterwards, I couldn’t wrap my head around it. How did Mick manage to deal with it in the moment, and then afterwards is beyond me. Both him and Gina have gone on with their lives so beautifully, managed to have such amaizing careers. But unlike all of us, they couldn’t forget about it. Watching the documentary, hearing Mick say he’d give anything to talk to his dad again, that was just heartbreaking. And Corinna, oh my God.
Don’t get me started on Seb, who never won another title after 2013. I can’t help but think that if Michael’s accident hadn’t happened, Seb’s journey at Ferrari would have been different. Would have been like Michael’s.
So I started watching F1 for Mick and Seb. Both my parents think it’s a little weird, as I apparently didn’t like it when I was little. Then I discovered Lewis, Charles, George and Lando. Daniel. Max, that I can’t help but like, no matter how much I think maybe I shouldn’t.
I think I didn’t like F1 when I was little because my brain thought it was about the cars. But it’s not. It’s about the poeple that risk their lives for this crazy sport they love. It’s about their story. And maybe someday soon, I hope we’ll see the second rebirth of Ferrari. I’m not sure how Mick and Charles would work together as teammates. I’m not sure how the main and secondary driver thing would work either. But I hope somehow it does. Because it would mean the world to both of them. It’s the same as they say in the documentary, they don’t need 7 titles. They just need one. Maybe one each, that would be brilliant.
And just maybe, against all odds, someday, Mick gets to have his chat with Michael.

Sorry if this is a bit of a random question, but how did you get into f1? Was it modern or classic first? I'm really curious about how we all find our way here lol
-taffyvontrips
Aah sorry if I'm answering this just now! I was sleeping when you sent it eheh
This one will be a long story lol as usual
So ngl my father used to watch f1 and every single time he fell asleep (because races are usually around 3 p.m)! lol and between his snoring I could hear names like 'Hamilton' 'Vettel' 'Alonso',so I was kind of familiar with this names.
I'll admit that I got into f1 very slowly, because I remember seeing Charles on tv back in 2018,when he was still in the Sauber team, and they interviewed him because at the time he signed with Ferrari and I thought 'oh he's cute!', I remember searching him on Instagram because I downloaded it recently lol, but did I watch a single race that year? Nope.
The first official race that I watched in its entirety was Monza 2019, where Charles won lol. I was at my aunt's house and I remember that after lunch, my cousin's boyfriend switched channels to watch the race and of course I sat on the sofa to watch it too. Did I watched the other races that year? Mhh kind of. Back in 2019 I had a social life lol and I essentially used to forget to watch f1, infact i slowly gave up and 'forgot' about it... until 2020.
Idk why but in 2020 I found out that sports existed lol: I started watching the Champions League and I finally started watching f1 more seriously. I started watching every race and I love how I started watching it because of my interest in Charles but it developed in a genuine interest in the sport and every mechanical detail too.
But it was inevitable that I would get interested in classic f1, since the age of 12 I've been obsessed with the 60s because of The Beatles and since then I've been interested in vintage music, movies etc. (my mum always says that I'm an 80 year old inside lol). The first classic f1 driver that I got interested in was Mika Häkkinen ang I got into 90s f1, then Gilles which he's the reason why I started posting on here, my first post on here was a gifset of him :'), and now here we are, back in the 60s with Bruce, I've come full circle I guess lol.
God sorry for this long answer, but now I want to know too how you got into f1!! (@jimclarkposting you can answer too if you'd like ahah).
Thanks for the ask ❤️

F1 Glossary
----------------
Nesta Archeron discovered Formula 1 when she was 9 years old. She woke before the sun one Sunday morning, quietly excited to have the television all to herself and watch whatever cartoons she wanted. But she couldn’t remember what channel they were on, instead flipping through the programs. She had almost given up when she stumbled across a race.
The moment she had seen the brightly colored open-wheeled cars flash across the screen, she paused. For whatever reason, the high pitched wasp-like scream of the twelve cylinder engines and the astonishing speed that the drivers were travelling enthralled young Nesta. She didn’t look away once for the rest of the race, or even for the post-race interviews and wrap up that most adults skipped. Something about it had her adrenaline pumping.
Nesta traded her dolls for matchbox cars, and when she grew older, picked up racing magazines instead of teen ones. Ever since that day, Formula 1 consumed her. No matter how the other kids or her two younger sisters teased her for it, her love for the sport never tarnished.
She spent years getting up at 2 am to watch live races that were being held halfway around the world. Instead of going to her senior prom, Nesta stayed home and layed out her predictions for the season’s drivers and constructors championships. She didn’t know how to do anything half-ass. She poured her whole heart into the sport and devoted her life to it.
**********
Nesta spent her 24th birthday working. It wasn’t like she could request the day off, not that it mattered. The racetrack at Monaco was exactly where she would have been anyway, working or not.
A press pass got her through the first security checkpoint. The team tents loomed ahead as she waited for personnel to cross the unstriped asphalt, inching her car carefully through the throngs of people. She rolled her window down, soaking in the sound of air tools and snippets of conversations.
Street tracks like Monaco were her favorite. They required drivers to push themselves with plenty of technical corners and dramatic incidents. There was less room for error, as the tracks themselves were not as wide. Drivers had to know their limits and follow the racing line closely.
Race tracks were Nesta’s comfort zone. She knew each track on the calendar like the back of her hand. Every turn was permanently etched in her mind like words on a tombstone. Race weekends followed a set schedule, something that she could appreciate. Friday: practice laps. Saturday: more practice, followed by qualifying, where each driver got the chance to set the fastest lap and secure a spot in the starting line up for the main event on Sunday.
Before she had graduated college, Nesta had managed to fully entrench herself in the world of Formula 1. Securing an internship at ESPN her sophomore year, she had made herself indispensable to the crusty old man that had been the senior track side reporter for decades. She studied everything he did and the questions he asked each driver, noting what changes she would have made. Somehow, he came to admire her spirit and taught her the tricks of the trade.
When he retired the year after Nesta graduated, he went to the board of directors and personally recommended her to fill his spot. She waited two agonizing days for their decision.
Using whatever means necessary, Nesta had clawed her way to the top and cemented her reputation as the most cutthroat reporter in the industry. Her goal had been for everyone in motorsport to know her name, and in only two years, she had done so. Better yet, she had caught the eye of one of the fastest drivers on the grid.
Her phone rang just as she pulled into the press parking area. She answered, not bothering to check the caller ID. “Hello?”
Tomas’ velvety voice thundered through the speakers of her Civic. “Hey baby. You here yet?”
“Just pulled in,” She replied, touching up her makeup in the rearview.
“Right on time for a quickie. Meet me at my trailer in five.”
Tomas had already hung up before she had the chance to protest. Both their reputations hinged on their relationship staying secret. If the press caught wind that she was fucking a driver, her credibility would go out the window, and Tomas would be the laughing stock of the grid. So sneaking into his trailer wasn’t exactly the type of discreet she was aiming for.
Tomas Mandray had been racing for Red Bull for two years when she had scored her first exclusive interview with him. He had just been awarded pole position at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, and Nesta had sweet talked her way into the paddock. It had taken minutes for his charming blue eyes to enchant her. He had won that race, and taken her to bed straight after.
The sex was great, but that’s all it ever was. Their relationship was purely based on the physical; nothing emotional on either end. They had agreed on that from the start. Just sex.
Unfortunately for Nesta, somewhere along the way it had become something more.
Sighing, she put on her oversized sunglasses and hid her tawny hair under a gauzy scarf. The fashion wouldn’t stand out at all amongst the celebrities that frequented the Monaco Grand Prix. Going over the top here was expected; Monaco was known for its money. Due to the lack of income tax, Monaco was a haven for white collar delinquents and royalty alike. Lamborghini’s and Ferrari’s were commonplace, and women wore rings that could set a jewel thief up for life.
No one bothered her as she strode towards the pit checkpoint, flashing her press badge to get by. She fell into her usual cadence, exuding an air of importance and invincibility. Seemingly without realizing, people moved out of her way when they saw her coming. The navy, red, and yellow of the Redbull tent came into view, and Nesta inserted herself into the crowd of mechanics and VIPs to get past security. Press wasn’t allowed in the area until after the race.
Nesta broke away once inside, heading down a back corridor. She knew the layout by heart, having walked the path many times. The door at the end of the hall led outside to Tomas’ private trailer. She didn’t bother to knock before entering. Tomas would already be waiting for her.
He set down his phone as she entered. “Finally,” He said with a savage grin. “We only have a few minutes.”
****************
Tomas left as soon as he finished, donning his jumpsuit without so much as a kiss goodbye. Utterly used to the behavior, Nesta straightened her clothes and again touched up her makeup before heading back out.
She was scheduled to conduct a pre-race interview with Cassian Valle in the Mercedes tent in twenty minutes. Redbull and Mercedes were at opposite ends of the pit, giving her plenty of time to think.
Truthfully, Nesta was dreading the interaction. Cassian was an arrogant ass. She couldn’t stand interviewing him; all he did was skirt around questions and try to flirt, which made it incredibly difficult to get any headline-worthy tidbits from him.
Azriel Sainz, Cassian’s teammate at Mercedes, was much more amiable. He was mostly forgettable and quiet, but always gave her something to work with and was sometimes downright pleasant to talk to. She could understand why the public loved him, but not why they were so enamored with Cassian. Sure, he was a three time world champion, and that earned him plenty of fans, but he was just so… dreadful.
She made it to the Mercedes pit just minutes before the scheduled time, immediately spotting her tense cameraman, Jacob. Slim built, he was average looking, nothing special. He was sweet though, if not a bit of a pushover.
“Where the hell have you been?” He hissed, chocolate brown eyes wide. “Valle is waiting.”
Nesta rolled her eyes, handing Jacob her sunglasses and the scarf. “I’m here now, aren’t I? Not my fault if he was early.” Nesta accepted her microphone and rolled her shoulders. “Let’s get this over with then.”
“Happy birthday by the way,” Jacob added. Yes, there was the pushover side shining through.
Nesta threw a grin at him over her shoulder. “Thanks.”
Cassian’s back was to her as she approached, his white Mercedes jumpsuit half on, the arms of it cinched around his waist. The crisp gray shirt he wore left little to the imagination, hugging his sculpted form. Good; at least that would capture the attention of any women that might be watching. As would the deep brown curl that fell in his face when he turned to her.
“If it isn’t my very favorite reporter,” He crooned, a grin plastered on his face. “Took you long enough to get here. I also hear it’s your birthday.” Nesta glared at Jacob. He shrank under her steely look, an apology stumbling from his lips.
“I would give you a birthday kiss, but I think you’d knock me out if I offered.”
Nesta pointedly ignored him, “Let’s just get on with it,” She said, motioning to Jacob to start recording. Once he signaled he was ready, Nesta breathed deep, the sweet scent of high octane fuel assaulting her senses. It steadied her, and she slipped into her professional mask before turning to the camera.
“As we all know, the Monaco Grand Prix offers drivers a unique set of challenges. The two-mile street course has 19 technical corners with little room for error. It is in Monaco that we get to see who has what it takes to be a Formula 1 champion.” She turned to Cassian, gave him a professional smile and continued.
“Last year, you had a puncture at turn seven when you ran over some debris. Coupled with the fumble the pit crew had with not having your tires ready when you came into the pit, you finished a disappointing 12th place, winning you no points in the driver’s championship. Do you expect that this year will be better, or will you stick to your usual aggressive driving style?”
Cassian laughed, running a hand through his unbound curls. “Yeah, I don’t think I’ll be changing anything. You can expect to see me on the podium, sweetheart. Most likely in first.”
Nesta grit her teeth. She couldn’t air that, and he knew it. “How about you answer the question without trying to piss me off?”
“It’s too easy,” Cassian said, that devilish grin returning. Nesta cut him a glare that simmered with violence. “Alright fine,” He relented, putting his hands up. “Go again.”
She repeated her question, and this time he answered, “I don’t really see any need to change my driving style, what happened last year was a fluke. I went wide on the turn and didn’t notice Vanserra's front wing until the last second and wasn’t able to change course.” Nesta nodded, encouraging him to go on. “I don't see myself making any mistakes like that this year. You can expect to see me on the podium, most likely in first.”
“Thank you for that Cassian. Good luck on the track today.”
“Thank you,” He said, waving at the camera. He paused before adding, “Though I won’t need luck.”
Nesta rolled her eyes and signaled for Jacob to cut the recording. At least that last bit could be edited out. “You are absolutely insufferable, you know that?”
Cassian shrugged, undoing the arms of his fire suit and slipping into them. “I do my best.” He winked at her before zipping up his suit, opening his mouth to say something else when the Mercedes team principal, Rhysand, barked at him to get his ass in gear. He gave Nesta a wordless salute before jogging off.
“I don’t know how you do it,” Jacob said, packing up his camera. “That guy has balls.”
“He’s a Formula 1 driver,” Nesta said simply, putting her sunglasses back on. “Of course he does.”
**********
Nesta watched the 78 lap race from the press box, silently cheering Tomas on. Each time the pack of cars passed, the windows rattled, doing little to muffle the engine noise. She chatted with the others as necessary, keeping one eye on the tarmac below. Tomas had started from pole position, and held onto first place until the final 10 laps. He had attempted to lap an AlphaTauri driver when the driver had failed to yield, violating FIA regulations. The two had bumped tires in what was ruled a racing incident, but Nesta knew better. Tomas had lost his cool and nudged the other driver on purpose, nearly sending him into the wall.
It was a bad call on Tomas’ part, as the comfortable four second lead he had held over second place shattered. Nesta swore under her breath as Cassian overtook Tomas, her heart dropping when the other Mercedes driver, Azriel, did the same. Tomas would not be happy about that.
When the checkered flag waved, Cassian was first, Azriel second, and Tomas third.  The winners parked before the podium, anger radiating from Tomas as he tore his helmet off. Tamlin, the Redbull team principal, said something to Tomas that had his cheeks burning red.
Nesta grabbed Jacob and headed for the press room. They had a half hour tops before the post-race interviews started, and Nesta had to make sure she was front row. Though it didn’t matter where she sat; she always made sure her questions were answered.
It was more so for Tomas. She wanted him to see her, to see the understanding on her face and know she supported him even when he didn't win.
They were first to the press room, and Nesta had ample time to prepare questions. She couldn’t question Tomas, or she risked uncapping his rage. Instead, she jotted down a question she knew would shift the focus from Tomas to the Mercedes drivers.
Reporters began filing in, vying for the perfect spot and debating the race results with one another. Nesta remained in her seat, determined to maintain her composure as her stomach churned. Tomas finally entered, jaw set as he took his place on the stage. Nesta tried to subtly catch his eye, but he pointedly avoided looking at her.
Cassian and Azriel entered, laughing and congratulating each other. Nesta noted the slight change in Tomas’ posture, the only hint of the blood boiling beneath his skin. Cameras flashed, reporters shouted, but still Nesta remained seated. Cassian, at least, sought her out in the crowd, and flashed her an ‘I-told-you-so’ grin when he found her. Once the clamor had died down, Nesta stood. The room quieted further, the others having learned not to talk over her if they valued their jobs. Nesta had a knack for digging up dirt on anyone she pleased.
Her eyes were still locked on Cassian as the moderator indicated she could ask her question.
“Azriel,” She started, turning to the dark haired man, “You were lucky you were able to take second in this race, after the incident in turn twelve on lap 27 when you sustained heavy damage to your front wing, thanks to the actions of your teammate. Does it ever get under your skin that Valle’s overly-aggressive driving threatens your own position in the championship?”
The room was silent. Tomas hid his grin behind a well-manicured hand. Cassian’s eyes narrowed, a muscle in his jaw fluttering. Good; she had hit a nerve. Azriel shrugged, crossing his arms.
“It was a racing incident. Could have happened to anyone. I don’t think the blame lays entirely with Cassian; I could have given him more room on the corner.”
And that was that. Nesta didn’t ask any more questions, but she could feel Cassian glaring at her throughout. At the end of the interview, all three drivers thanked everyone before leaving.
As Nesta made her way back to her car, she texted Tomas.
You okay?
Her heart pounded as she waited for the reply. Her phone buzzed minutes later.
I’ll be home late. Party at the Redbull house.
Oh. Okay. See you later then.
“Happy birthday to me,” She muttered, stuffing the phone in her pocket.
Nesta wasn’t sure why his reply stung, but it cut deep. She had hoped that he would want to see her instead of going to another party and spend time with her on her birthday. Instead, he would probably stick his tongue down another woman’s throat like usual. She couldn’t really blame him. Their relationship had to remain secret and to do so, Tomas had to maintain his playboy aura. It wasn’t really cheating if she had agreed to it.
But if that were true, why did it hurt so fucking bad when he did?
Some of her tension eased when she finally spied her car in the lot. The Blue Bullet, she had nicknamed it, due to the strikingly bright paint. It was the first purchase she had made upon being promoted, and it had since become her pride and joy. She had chosen it because it set lap records left and right when it had hit the market a few years back, and she had craved speed her whole life. On city streets, this car was the closest she could get to experiencing Formula 1 without completely breaking the bank.
“How about you don’t ask stupid fucking questions next time your prettyboy loses?”
Nesta’s breath hitched. Your prettyboy. The accusation was clear. Her hand slipped from the door handle, turning towards the voice. If he knew… If he knew about her and Tomas, they were done for. She willed her voice into solid steel.
“Cassian. I would advise you to choose your next words wisely.”
He placed a hand on her Civic, getting in her face. “Racing means you have racing incidents. I don’t expect you to understand, seeing as you’ve never been behind the wheel of a real race car.” He sneered at her car, the insult striking home.
Fear faded, replaced by a rising wave of scarlett rage. Nesta’s gaze stuck to where his hand lay on the bright blue paint, utterly vexed by the infringement. She bared her teeth at him, rising to the challenge in Cassian’s flaming hazel eyes.
“Get. Off.”
Cassian started at the command in her tone and obeyed. He opened his mouth, but she cut him off. “Understanding the nuances of Formula 1 is my job description. I asked about that incident because I knew it would piss you off. Looks like I was right huh?” Her temper was getting the better of her. “And by the way, would it kill you to give me a decent quote once in a while, instead of always trying to get in my pants?”
“I do not-”
“Oh go fuck yourself,” Nesta scoffed, yanking the door open.
The corners of his mouth twitched upward as she slammed the car door. “I was already planning on it.”
Those parting words haunted her drive home, even as she took the long way in hopes of blowing off steam. She shifted through the gears, throwing the Civic around corners much faster than was probably safe. Nesta didn’t care; her head was a mess. At least he hadn’t mentioned anything more about Tomas. Maybe Cassian had just thought she had a crush, based on the way she had been looking at him during the conference. Gods, she couldn’t get Cassian out of her head.
His grin followed her up the stairs to her apartment, where she snapped the curtains shut. She couldn’t bear to look out over the track any longer today.
Those words echoed in her head as she brushed her teeth and crawled into bed alone. Swam through her thoughts of Tomas, as she struggled to keep her eyes open when the clock showed 1 am. As she finally gave in, they were her last thought.
I was already planning on it.

Meet Ellie Norman – Formula One’s first female executive on a mission to rebrand the sport
The world of F1 is finally shifting, and this is the women driving the change
Ellie Norman was working at Virgin Media when she got a call in the beginning of 2017 from her now-boss Sean Bratches, Managing Director of Commercial Operations at F1, asking to meet him for a coffee. Today, Formula One’s first high-profile female executive under Liberty Media, is doing her very best to change the sport’s false perception.
Did you feel comfortable going into Formula One?
‘Believe it or not, as a ten-year-old girl I dreamt of being a female Formula One driver. I never got to the stage, as you may have guessed, but I’ve always had a love for cars and speed – I obtained my racing license in 2007 – and I am fascinated by the engines and technology in cars. Having that general, sort of basic, knowledge of the automotive industry, made the transition easier.’
Tumblr media
Growing up as a girl interested in cars, did you ever feel like the industry was primarily targeted towards men?
‘That’s really interesting because from a very young age, I’ve never seen any barriers. I grew up on a farm with my sisters – my dad was a farmer – and we weren’t really exposed to gender stereotypes. I got thrown into the deep end, worked outside with machinery and altering vehicles like tractors. I’ve never looked at anything and thought: that’s more of a boy’s thing versus a girl’s thing.’
You’re the Director of Marketing & Communications at Formula One. What keeps you busy on a daily basis?
‘My role is structured around delivering the business’s three main objectives. First, we want more people to engage with the sports, this can be via TV or via digital channels. Secondly, we want more people to attend the races around the world. And finally, we want to grow our fan base, make Formula One as relevant to as many people as possible. There is a false perception that F1 is a male-oriented sport, but 44% of our fan base is actually female. I believe that as an organisation and as a sport, we have the responsibility to look for ways to further increase that inclusion and diversity.’
Is that why you removed the grid girls? ‘We realised that if we wanted to grow our female fan base, this was a decision we had to make. Their roles were no longer relevant – the drivers couldn’t actually see the lollipops these girls were holding, neither could the audience that was watching the race on TV. This one simple move has allowed us to shine the spotlight on other highly skilled women in the sport, like the women in the pit crew, broadcasters, marketers and event managers – there are a lot more women taking on roles in this sport than you might expect.’
So you never doubted this decision?
‘Oh no, not at all. t’s fair to say that it was a controversial decision that didn’t make everyone happy. Especially for the older fan base – those who have been avid fans of F1 for years – it was a big change. It was incredibly interesting to see the amount of support we received from newer fans and the Generation Z audience, as well as from young guys who found the whole concept slight archaic.’
Tell me more about how you’re getting Gen Z interested?
‘One of our goals is to inspire the younger generations to consider careers in Formula One. The sport has always been perceived as quite elitist. We want to break down these barriers, open up the conversation with Gen Z, and the best way to do that is via social media. We had Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things come in and join us. That gave us an opportunity to create relevant content and portray the sport in much more relatable way to her fan base.’
It is still very much a male-dominated industry. Do you have a lot of women working for you?
‘When I joined the company, I got an office, a mobile phone, a laptop and essentially a blank sheet of paper. I was very conscious about how to build my team – we’re a small team, only 22 people – so my recruitment strategy was to hire 50-50 men and women, some with experience outside the industry, as well as people from within F1.’
What advice would you give young girls that want to get into Formula One?
As an aspiring race driver, you have to stay focussed and keep the momentum up – work hard and go for it. There are more and more young women coming up through the ranks, like Tatiana Calderón – the first woman to compete in Formula 2 – and Jamie Chadwick. If you’re interested in the business side of F1, remember to be brave, be bold and get comfortable with being uncomfortable.’ (X)

Is there any way online to watch ted’s notebook? Do you know if it’s on the F1TV app?
DAMN anon it should be on the f1tv app huh?? it feels like such an organic and essential part of the race weekend…
it isn’t. so i watch it live thru sportsurge, a decent number of websites just stream the sky f1 channel and don’t stop when the session is over. if you miss it live, you can use any old UK VPN to watch it on the sky f1 youtube channel. idr when they upload it but i think it’s usually same day. there’s a youtube channel that also reliably re uploads it in watermarked but non geolocked form. just search for “teds notebook [name of gp]” and you’ll find it lol

I have thought about this when I was writing my message about F1:
How much has FE changed when it comes to marketing and attracting new fans? Because I think this is very interesting.
While Drive to Survive, Twitch etc. have brought a new wave of fans into F1, nothing like this has ever happened in FE.
Sure we had "And We Go Green" (amazing documentary) and many internal series from teams or even FE themselves telling the journey but never quiet something this big.
And I think it's interesting to consider.
Because we now have Extreme E as the best comparison. Another racing series that has climate goals and is based on sustainability. And immediately Extreme E had the marketing. Big drivers having teams there, big names to the teams and social media campaigns.
And it got me thinking.
Because FE is not only now a world championship but have had so many big names in the sport for years (Audi, Abt, BMW, Andretti, Mercedes, now McLaren etc.)
But FE for all everyone agrees has lost it's marketing.
They just dropped off. And it's not like the YouTube channel is getting worse or like the drivers are boring, hell I would argue that most aspects are improving.
We are getting new race tracks in new countries, on new continents even with more drivers and a very competitive field skill wise. The batteries last longer which means more action, top teams have been so close with championship being down to the last race even in 4 way battles.
So in all ways FE is improving and should get more attention.
But they in my opinion are going down the same path that F1 has been heading down for years.
It's just getting more and more inaccessible. There's no easy way to watch the races in some countries, the access keeps getting more limited and it's actually hard to find out how to watch.
I am lucky I am German because I can watch the English coverage for free practice sometimes but with ran taking over I know what and where to rely on.
I remember when FE used to have all the old races public and when I could watch on the YouTube channel with Jack Nicholl's loving anecdotes and Dario's interesting knowledge. And I get that with becoming a world series and stepping up to the level it is now maybe having everything like that isn't an option anymore although it should be because it would just be great to have that easy access. But the fact that there's no general coverage like that world wide somehow truly damaged it.
Because FE isn't big enough yet to rely on "local" coverage like F1 could.
The series has gotten big and everyone should be watching (because frankly the racing is more amazing than any race in F1 and way more unpredictable) but not everyone is because even F1 like Vettel who have spoken about sustainability seem to somehow still have a problem with it (which I can never understand.)
When you aren't recognised by other drivers and people still threat FE like a option for everyone that doesn't make it in F1 (as if that was even possible for everyone let alone everyone's dream) then a series can't expect countries to make the broadcasting easily available.
I have said it soo much already and everyone who watches FE will preach it to you, hell many indy etc. blogs will probably agree but here's just another reminder that F1 isn't the pinnacle of motorsport and the illusion that it's an ultimate goal is genuinely so infruariting (but that wasn't my point.)
So we all know the current situation but it actually makes me curious how FE has changed so let's dig into that a bit.
I can't find any explicit date but I know that they took down the races from YouTube in season 6 or shortly after as that was the first season I fully started watching live.
So, until then you could find all of free practice, race and also qualifying if I remember correctly on YouTube.
Now bear in mind that this was the season where we realised that next season Formula E would officially be a world championship. In my opinion it should have been one before that and I still consider every champion a WDC but that was the season we knew that next year we would have WDC.
And I think that pressure definitely meant that Formula E had to step up. Because now there was a weight added to the sport that hadn't been there before. So broadcasting deals were made more and more.
But I think with that and Mercedes especially came another shift entirely that for me altered the way FE was.
It was a seriousness that wasn't there before. Don't get me wrong, everyone took their job very seriously and I think FE has some of the most determined drivers.
But you also have to remember that so many people on that grid where there from the start.
I mean, DiGrassi like him or not, is a huge part of FE.
You had Sam who came there on a last hope, having no other racing series basically.
You had JEV (everyone probably knows by know how much I love JEV and how I could go on and on about his story so I will shut up.)
You had Buemi who like Daniel was there since day one.
You had Antonio and Robin who had over the years finally been able to show what they were made of.
You had Turvey, the most underrated driver of the grid.
You had Jerome, a deeply underrated driver.
You had Nico Prost and Bruno Senna who both had a name much to heavy in motorsport that they were expected to live up to.
But the thing is so many of the drivers where there since the beginning or joined early on and had not only seen the series but also each other grow and been there for each other.
I think there so many unique friendships and just general relationships (be it teammates etc.) in FE that you would not find anywhere else.
But with Mercedes and the WDC there was a seriousness, this heavy weight and new sense of competitiveness and once again the burden of being compared to F1.
Because of Nyck and Stoffel. The Mercedes F1 names. Drivers who were supposed to be the new Mercedes driver, drivers who so many want to see in F1 etc.
And then we were once again in season 1 where you had this RedBull reject who was showing so much talent expect this time they were clearly already seen as the best without even having to try.
I think that was a point where marketing truly changed for FE and it wasn't just for the inaccessibility that came.
It was for this need to show that FE was somehow worthy of this team with these drivers.
I think unknowingly, the entire paddock shifted and I think there's so much more to say to that which I want to spare you all but yeah.
I think FE has had a slow incoming change but season 6/7 was really when it truly hit.
But how did this all affect the marketing. I think know you have to talk about drive to survive because the way "Unplugged" was set up was clearly to mimic that.
But I think it's more than just YouTube. I think it's even in the commentating. There used to be more carefree things and I think for a while they tried to sound even more serious there for potential new fans. (Although I think this has become normal again and as someone who has the privilege of Daniel as a commentator there's such a casual feel.)
They wanted to look more professional, so they matched the website (which this season let's all just agree: The fucking graphic design was horrid. Where's my beloved FE font?)
But how has this affected fans? I think because FE has become more inaccessible there's definitely a watching difficulty. On the other hand I think FE over the last years has gained more fans than ever. And I think it's because FE has actually become a racing series option that is mentioned in the same breath as for example F1.
Now, I have said that while there is more stuff from FE it doesn't reach outside of it like a Drive to survive does for example.
So how has FE gained more fans?
And now I will bring an argument that I could also bring for F1 and would probably get shot by everyone for.
I think FE has indeed gained more fans because of this old hell site.
Let's be honest, you get instantly yelled at if you mention FE on Twitter.
But here you genuinely have fans putting so much of their time and resources to not only spreading awareness but also educating (or trying to at the very least) new fans about the series, the drivers etc.
And I think many younger fans once they have settled into F1 and gotten into motorracing also reach out and search for other series. An easy way of which is to look at F1 blogs you follow and see what else they might enjoy.
This was all a big ramble that probably lost the point somewhere along the way but here's my conclusion:
While FE's increasing accessibility is making it harder for fans, I think fans are actually a huge part of why the sport is gaining new followers. I think the marketing has been influenced a lot in season 6 and 7 but at the same time Tumblr combated the added seriousness and actually made the sport much more fun to check out.

Best Formula 1 Books
When you’re looking for the best Formula 1 books to buy and read, one of the biggest problems you come across is that all the reviews are the same – copied and pasted from Amazon. Also, how do you know if the books you like are what the reviewer likes?
The Formula 1 books below have been read by me, not just copied and pasted from other listings. I like books that share stories, that get into the emotion of the subject and leave you feeling something. I’m not a facts and figures guys, so a book full of dates, cold facts, and specifications will have me putting the book back on the shelf half-read.
I like my books like I like my F1 – fast-paced and dramatic.
So if you’re like me, the below Formula 1 books will be for you…
The Best Formula 1 Books

Life to the Limit: My Autobiography by Jenson Button
This is actually my favourite Formula 1 book, which is why it is at the top of the list. When you read it, you can’t help but have the voice of Jenson Button in your head, which makes his jokes funnier (and this is a very funny book). While there is a lot of humour, often self-deprecating, the tone definitely takes a turn and you can’t help but be moved when Jenson talks about losing his father.
Some of the chapters are super short too, as in a handful of pages, so if you’re someone who likes to read before bed and has to finish at the end of a chapter, this book will make sure you get to bed at a reasonable hour.

Senna versus Prost
Before I read Jenson’s book, Senna versus Prost was my favourite.
Malcolm Folley has done a cracking job of creating a space for people to share their stories of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost in a way that instantly transports the reader back to those great battles of the 80s and 90s.
What’s even better is Folley speaks with a lot of team personnel, people in the background who we’ve not really heard of, and lets us know what it was really like to be on the ground as the battles took place out on the track.
So much has been made of Ayrton Senna over the years, that Prost’s version of events was somewhat overlooked – until now. And although he could have used the book as an opportunity to lay the boots into his rival, Prost does a brilliant job of relaying events as he saw them.
Le Professeur off the track as well as on it.

Murray Walker: Unless I’m Very Much Mistaken
Murray Walker is the voice of Formula 1. He has one of those voices that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up when you’re watching an old race and his enthusiasm for F1 jumps through the speakers.
Some artists use paints, some use pencils, Murray Walker used a microphone.
Walker is a quintessential storyteller, so once again this is a book that you will most likely read in his voice. He tells vivid stories about growing up, his time in the war, all the way through to the Murray Walker we know from our TV screens commentating on Formula 1.
Known for the odd gaff in the commentary box, Walker isn’t shy about having a laugh with it, and understands it helped endear him to fans over the years.
Unless I’m very much mistaken, this is a must-read book that you will thoroughly enjoy.

Niki Lauda – The Biography
If a book about a man who had a horrific crash at the wheel of a Formula 1 racing car, was given the last rights, then was back on the grid a month later doesn’t move you, then nothing will.
Niki Lauda was a man of little fuss or sentiment, and Maurice Hamilton has written this book in much the same vein. Starting from Lauda’s early days growing up in a proper family who felt motor racing was beneath their station, to his racing years, to flying, and much more.
If there is to be one criticism of this book, it’s that it doesn’t go into a great deal of detail on his time with Mercedes. However, the vivid recollections of his racing days from people who witnessed it definitely make up for this.

The Unknown Kimi Räikkönen gives great insights into Kimi’s path to F1, his upbringing, and now the importance of time with his growing family.
If you’re looking for a book of anecdotes from Kimi’s time in the paddock, this book isn’t it.
But if you want to learn more about Kimi’s path to F1, his motivation for quitting the sport, and his motivation for coming back to it.
The photos he shares are excellent too.

Aussie Grit: My Formula One Journey
This is one that most Australian’s will love, as the Aussie legend shares anecdotes or ‘yarns’ from his time in F1 racing against some of the best drivers on the planet.
Those who remember the ‘Multi 21’ saga and breakdown in the relationship with Sebastian Vettel will like this book, as Webber gives his version of the events that unfolded in front of our eyes on race days.
A highlight of this book is Webber walking us through his personal struggles, as it’s not something often associated with the stoic Australian. This book is brutally honest in parts, and will give you a deeper appreciation of the man, not just the driver.

The Mechanic: The Secret World of the F1 Pitlane
Marc ‘Elvis’ Priestley was one the number one mechanic at McLaren, who as well as this book has an incredible YouTube channel where he shares his insights and analysis of Formula 1 regularly.
Simply put, his book needs to be on the bookshelf of every Formula 1 fan, it’s that good.
I’ll admit I’d never really thought about the pit crew. We see them for a few seconds each race, maybe more if something dramatic happens to one of their drivers.
This book takes us well and truly behind the scenes, into the life of partying and fast-living away from the track.
Priestley also shares a lot of secrets about the rivalries he was part of during his time in F1, which may make him a little unpopular with a few people…

Chequered Conflict: The Inside Story on Two Explosive F1 World Championships
You could be forgiven for thinking this book by Maurice Hamilton is the work of a family member of Lewis Hamilton, but it’s not. Maurice Hamilton is the author of amazing F1 history books on the likes of James Hunt, Niki Lauda, Jackie Stewart, Frank Williams, and more.
Grand Prix racing in 2007 and 2008 was an explosive affair between Ferrari and McLaren, and this book captures all the drama perfectly.
2007 was the first time since 1986 that three drivers had a chance of winning the title going into the final race, and this book puts you back on the edge of your seat again as you re-live this piece of F1 history.

The Mechanic’s Tale
This book by Steve Matchett is quite different to The Mechanic: The Secret World of the F1 Pitlane in that it is more about the author’s life, from trying desperately to break into the world of Formula 1. Although he’s not a racing driver, the struggles he faced are on par with some of the drivers mentioned in the books above.
Steve Matchett also shares a lot of his own eye-witness accounts of some of the greats such as Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna, and Michael Schumacher. Plus there is a lot on his time with Benetton which is great reading.

Flat Out Flat Broke: The Original Stig
When you think of Formula 1, names like Lewis Hamilton, Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill and Jackie Stewart come to mind straight away, but what about Perry McCarthy? No? Didn’t think so.
McCarthy spent the 1992 Formula 1 season ‘racing’ for the Andrea Moda Formula team, but unfortunately, never qualified for a Grand Prix.
That hasn’t stopped him from writing a hilarious autobiography that has already become a motorsport best seller.
While he didn’t have much luck in F1, or in a lot of other things, McCarthy bounced back to become the first ‘Stig’ on TopGear.
If you want to share a story with someone you care about that will inspire them to chase their dreams and never give up, then this is the one to give them. They don’t even need to be a Formula 1 fan to enjoy this one.
