• When walking, you can ask him to take a photo as a souvenir. And he won't refuse because he'll think it's cute that you want to remember it.

But he will only allow himself to take a picture when he knows you only have a phone.

Even so, sometimes you can go for a walk together without phones or anything.

• He is a person used to everything. Laziness in bed, sports and fighting, relaxing or even quiet activities. And there is really no favorite. Therefore, he is able to sit down and do whatever you want.

hi! so I am a casual fan of kpop and tbh I know next to nothing aside from knowing a few group names, anyways do you know how much control/agency idols have when it comes to their wardrobe? like is it the stylist or the idol that makes leo hot and taeyong a clown is what I'm asking

ANON GKAOGAGOOGAOGAOGA PLEASE THIS DISMOUNT KILLED ME. im no expert by any means im just nosey but from what ive gathered it’s a mix of everything? like it depends on the idol, their company, the age of the group, the event etc etc. if theyre just out and about on their own or at an airport that tends to be their own wardrobe nd i think most ppl use that to gauge personal taste.

with work stuff on stage or at fashion shoots occasionally if idols are more fashion inclined so they’ll input more with stage outfits nd even design some (like key did w shinee’s concert looks for swc5) it was common for idols to have some sway years ago nd these days its even more common for idols to basically come up with styling concepts for better or for worse.......

wrt taeyong my friend is a big tyongf nd she gushes to me abt how he’s interested in fashion nd tings so i think he would dress eccentrically on his own time but nct stage outfits are a product beyond one persons mind (derogatory)

nd w leo for one he just is a natural model….like he left the venue in mismatched pajamas nd ate lowkey even tho the outfit was hideous nd he served cunt in chelsea boots (sick) but he mentioned sumn recently abt really putting effort into le fashion so he might have some input in his looks even on stage esp during solo schedules. but i also think his stylists Know his style cuz theres minimal difference btwn on and off duty leo lewks on a good day LMAO

it was inspiring really, to see so many moas comment more things yeonjun should do with sarai. even for a kpop idol, yeonjun still thought millions of views within a couple of days was insane. people seemed to like the duo much more than he thought.

of course he loved doing videos with her and he hoped the fun would never end. but in order to make things cordial he had to find some type of way to apologize to winter. he was young when he did that stupid bet. and if he was anywhere near the mindset he was in now he wouldn’t dare do it.

but yeonjun was weak minded back then and he wanted winter to understand that.

but how could she?

for five years winter worked and went to school all the while taking care of a child that she knew nothing about until she was just four months pregnant. she didn’t have enough money to get an abortion, so she had to keep her. for months on end her hatrid for yeonjun grew drastically. she was too embarrassed to talk to him or anyone after what had happened. the whole school practically knew.

you could say winter was being dramatic. but she set foundations in her life to make sure she’d never feel that type of darkness and pain again, hence her being the head of the tech company she worked for. yeonjun picked up the phone only to hang it right back up. he was indecisive. he didn’t know how she’d react to his phone call. but he thought anything was worth a try.

he got her number from pd-nim and separated himself from the members and went for it. the phone rung for a few short moments until he heard a light muffled voice on the other end.

“hello?”. she tones.

“hey, is this winter?” yeonjun asks.

she swallows. “who is this?”.

“before I say who I am please don’t hang up. I really want to speak to you”.

winter bites her lips. truly she didn’t want to speak to yeonjun. but judging by the condition sarai was in the other day, she figured she had to start someplace. “It’s yeonjun isn’t it?”.

at the sound of his name sarai pops her head up, reaching for the phone frantically. “Mommy! I want to talk to junnie. can i talk to junnie please?”. she holds up a finger. “not now sarai. go play okay?”. with a frown the little girl does as she were told. she hoped her mommy would at least let her talk to him later.

yeonjun smiles a little. “she’s so cute”.

“what do you want yeonjun?”.

“winter i know our high school days wasn’t the fondest of memories. I know I did some crazy stuff back then. I was dumb I just thought that if I did those things everyone would like me and I’d get the clout that I wanted. none of that clout or any of that attention was worth what I did to you”.

“and you’re just now figuring that out?”.

“yes--well n--”.

“do you know the hell I went through in that school? especially since I was practically the biggest one there and to have the most popular guy at school swoop in and take my virginity as a joke? and then say the most horrible shit about me right after?! do you know how that made me feel?”.

“winter i’m sorry”.

“sorry doesn’t cut it yeonjun. i won’t ever get those moments back. a lot of people look back to high school and think it was some of the best days of their lives and now I have to pretend to forget about it just so I won’t have to tell my daughter that some guy thought it was cool to take advantage of me”.

yeonjun breathes. “I know I’ll never be able to comprehend your pain and i’m so sorry for all of that I swear”.

winter wasted no time hanging up the phone. that felt good at least. getting all of her anger out after five years. overhearing the silence sarai slowly trickles into the kitchen where she was.

“mommy? are you okay?”.

“yes i’m fine sarai. I’m just a little frustrated”.

“why? why were you being so mean to junnie?”.

no, she’d rather not. she rather not spoil the perfect image of yeonjun that sarai held in her mind.

“it’s nothing. don’t worry okay?”. she lied perfectly.

and for that very reason she was ducking and dodging yeonjun, taking sarai to her other bookings and holding off on another video for as long as she could. but modeling and tv shows even, just wasn’t as fun as her videos with yeonjun. in sarai’s mind at least. plus, who else was going to give her advice for the way the kids was treating her at school?

it only took for sarai to start whining and for bighit to keep calling her yet again for winter to give in. no matter how hard she tried to get sarai to forget about yeonjun she couldn’t. once sarai saw him she ran into his arms and hugged him tightly and she inwardly pouted once the hug was over.

winter hated how every image of yeonjun in her mind was who he was back in high school, and now here he was laughing and smiling with sarai like he was some angel. she hated how sweet he was now. how soft spoken and humble he was. she hated it all because he didn’t deserve to be this successful and happy after the damage he caused.

but sarai wanted a dad. so what was winter going to tell her?

“hii i’m yeonjun from tomorrow by together!”.

“hiii i’m sarai and we’re back with another video! today i’m going to be giving junnie a makeover!”.

splayed out on the table in front of them was thousands of makeup brushes and palettes and behind them was a wardrobe. sarai was excited about this video for sure. she thought yeonjun would look so funny in anything she styled him in.

“woo hoo!!”. yeonjun cheered with his hands in the air, even though he was truly scared out of his mind. she picked up a brush and started swirling it inside the black eyeshadow.

“first! we are going to do you’re eyebrows because they’re uneven”. sarai begans, climbing her way onto yeonjun’s lap so she could reach them. yeonjun scoffs, “hey they aren’t uneven!”. sarai laughs. she grips a piece of his hair before she mushes the substance on his eyebrow to where she thought needed more hair. yeonjun pouts his lips at sarai’s laughter. she pulled his hair a little to see the entirety of his face. his eyes glare up into hers and she wraps her small arms around his head.

“fine! I’m sorry for being mean you big baby”.

yeonjun laughs. why was she so adorable?

“next! we are going to do this thing!”.she shrieks, holding a small glass squirt bottle of liquid foundation that was three shades darker than his actual skin tone. he attempted to warn her but she didn’t listen of course, slapping it on his skin until it was fully rubbed in.

“oh! what color lipstick do you want junnie?”. she asks excitedly. yeonjun pretends to think.

“hmm. can i try pink?”. she pops open the cap immediately. she swabs it along his lips at his command. “oh my gosh junnie! you look pretty”.and even though he knew in his heart he probably looked crazier than ever but sarai had this feeble gleam in her eyes that made him want to believe everything she said.

“ou! I think this nail polish would be perfect!”. she jeers while twisting the cap. she laid yeonjun’s hands on the table and start dabbing the hot pink colored polish onto his nails. she made a huge mess of course, laying most of the polish on his cuticle rather than his actual nail bed. yeonjun didn’t mind at all though.

“I like this color”, he says matter of factly.

“me too! you’re so nice junnie”.

“nice?”.

“yeah! for letting me do your nails and makeup and hair. you’re so nice to me”.

“of course. why not?”.

sarai smiles while re-dipping the polish into it’s bottle. “when I meet my daddy, I hope he’s just like you”.

yeonjun didn’t know why but for some reason that touched his heart more than it should.

she jumps off his lap and goes to the wardrobe. “are you ready to be a hot girl junnie?”.

“a hot girl?”.

she throws her arms in the air. “you seriously have to start listening to megan thee stallion”.

before yeonjun could think and question her music choices he was hit with a pink short pleated skirt and a pink shirt filled with sequins. the production team laughed at her choices, and she was quite proud of them. “you’d look so cute in this!”. and for the love of god, why couldn’t he say no to her?

walking out of the dressing room in a pleated skirt and butchered makeup was one of the most nerve wrecking things yeonjun could’ve done for a video. but once he heard her almost tumble over in pure laughter he didn’t regret it one bit.

“is this funny to you?”. yeonjun taunts pointing to himself. she claps her hands and nods, her smile warming his heart to the fullest.

“junnie?”. sarai finally mumbles underneath her breath after the video shooting was over. he was currently using cotton swabs to wipe the makeup from his face.

“hm?”.

she swallows. “I’m sorry my mommy was being mean to you yesterday”.

yeonjun abruptly stops. “sarai? did you hear anything she said?”.

“well no but I heard her getting really mad”.

yeonjun sighs in relief. he purses his lips. “you don’t have to apologize for her. if anything I’m the one that should be apologizing a million times right now”.

“really? why?”.

yeonjun sighs. “it’s too complicated for your pretty little brain to understand. but me and your mommy knew each other when we were younger. she doesn’t like me all that much but I want to be friends with her you know? since me and you are good friends”.

“maybe I can talk to my mommy so she can be your friend junnie! but only under one condition!”. sarai says gesturing the number with her finger. yeonjun puts his hands on his hips.

“hm. what’s the condition?”.

sarai scoots closer to him. “you can’t tell my mommy that I asked. pinky promise?”. she says while holding out her pinky for yeonjun to grab. he smiles and curls his around hers. “fine. what is it?”.

“i think my mommy was being really mean to you because she doesn’t want me to meet my daddy. can you help me find him please junnie?”.

“i don’t know if i can do that sarai. you said you don’t know anything about him? I don’t think your mommy will tell me that kind of information either”.

“sarai? what are you talking about?”. winter questions suspiciously, only being there long enough to overhear sarai discussing her father. but winter didn’t want sarai discussing anything especially with yeonjun. sarai’s heart drops and her eyes widen.

“nothing mommy”. she stammers.

“what did I just hear you say? why are you discussing that kind of stuff with yeonjun?”.

“winter it’s really okay--”, yeonjun tries to come to her rescue but failed immediately.

“no. and you stay out of her business. her father’s whereabouts is something only I should know about”.

“winter relax. I’m not in her business. she asked me a question and I answered”.

“and who told you to do that? she’s five she doesn’t know what she’s saying half the time”.

“just because she’s five doesn’t mean--wait? she’s five years old?”.

“let’s go sarai”. winter demands, holding her hand out for sarai to grab. she did so instantly and winter gave yeonjun a cold, dead look in his eye.

“I barely wanted you to even do videos with her but since she liked you I couldn’t say no. but now you’re taking things too far. mind your business yeonjun”. she snaps before disappearing out of the doors.

where they first met and how

they first met when their groups were promoting around the same time and they kept seeing one another backstage at music shows. kyori is a huge fan of kaleidoscope and has done a few dance covers of their songs and danced to them on variety shows so she was super excited to introduce herself!

how long their ‘flirting’ phase was before feelings got involved

i’d say pretty early. they grew attached to each other very quickly, especially because kyori came into yuki’s life when she was really needed.

who fell for who first ( if applicable )

i have a feeling that yuki fell hardest first. kyori definitely fell fast but i think yuki was still first.

where their first date was and what it was like

after they had been talking non stop for a couple of weeks, kyori showed up at the apex building with flowers and told yuki she was taking her out. they had a picnic behind the building with lots of food that kyori had made. very cute, very pure.

who asks who out and how ( with a sign? spelled out on a cake? just a simple ‘will you go out with me’? )

i guess you could say that kyori asked yuki out but really she didnt ask at all. she just surprised her by showing up with the date plan. yuki probably asked if it was a date like twelve times.

who proposes first

obviously this is a long way off but once again i think it would be kyori. she’s one for romantic gestures and she would want to make yuki feel special and loved so she would be determined to propose first.

if they keep / kept their relationship secret or let everyone know right away

as kpop idols, it’s a secret because it has to be. especially as two female kpop idols dating. however, all of their members know and other artists in their companies as well. they’re not the best at being subtle.

where the proposal happens and how ( kiss cam at a baseball game? on a hillside surrounded by ducks? at a disney park? )

i doubt they would get married until their groups have both disbanded so like i said, it’s a ways away. flowers and picnics are two of kyori’s favourite things and something she’s integrated a lot into their relationship. she would have made a scavenger hunt around all of their favourite places and things that remind her of yuki which would end in a picnic in a garden surrounded by flowers where she would ask yuki to marry her.

if they adopt any pets together

oh i bet they do! let’s say two cats and a super cute fluffy dog!

who’s more dominant

i’m thinking yuki. even though it seems like kyori takes the lead in a lot of aspects of their relationship but i don’t think she’s necessarily dominant. just stupidly cute and overexcited.

where their first kiss was and what it was like

their first kiss was on their first date. kyori was reaching over to grab something out of the picnic basket and yuki surprise kissed her. then they kept kissing throughout the date bc they’re stupidly cute.

if they have any matching couples stuff ( mugs? sweaters? pillowcases? )

oh they definitely have so much matching stuff! especially things that the public can’t see and catch onto. so while they do have matching braclets, most of their matching items are things like matching mugs, matching socks, matching notebooks. all sorts of things like that. also it isn’t matching, but kyori bought a sunflower necklace for yuki because yuki calls her ‘sunflower’ so.

how into pda they are

their brand of pda is very soft and sweet. obviously they can’t do it super publically but when they’re around their members they will cuddle and do sweet little cheek kisses and be obviously couple-y but not in an awfully obnoxious way?

who holds the umbrella when it rains

yuki. she’s taller.

where their usual ‘date spot’ is ( if applicable )

their usual dates are sneaking into one anothers dorms with the help of members because it’s just the easiest way to do it. when they can they love to go for picnics in places that are quite private and they talk on the phone every night as well.

who’s more protective

i’m gonna say yuki!

how long it is before they sleep together ( can be as in ‘had sex’ or as in ‘shared a bed’ )

probably a few months. mostly because finding an opportunity isn’t that easy but also partily because they wanted to take their time. i don’t know about yuki, but kyori had never gone that far with a partner so it was a big deal to her.

if they argue about anything

their arguments are usually very stupid and last about five minutes. just silly bickering about random things. big arguments are few and far between.

who leaves more marks ( lipstick, hickeys, scratchmarks etc. )

yuki yuki yuki! kyori honestly likes it a lot. they are careful not to make them too obvious but whenever kyori sees marks yuki has left she gets all blushy and happy!!

who steals whose clothes and how often

why have a girlfriend if you don’t steal one anothers clothes? they both do this frequently. so much so that their wardrobes are basically mixed.

how they cuddle ( spooning? facing each other? )

it depends but they often find themselves cuddling facing each other with kyori tucking her head into yuki’s shoulder. very cute.

what their favourite nonsexual activity is

would saying picnics be repetitive? really they just love spending the day together and doing whatever they feel like. sometimes they’ll bake together, sometimes they’ll nap together. they’ll go on public dates together at times because they just appear to be friends.

how long they stay mad at each other

a few hours at most. honestly, kyori can’t stay mad at anyone so staying mad at yuki is near impossible.

what their usual coffee / tea orders are

kyori loves peach tea or any kind of fruit tea + really sugary coffees (esp frappes) and yuki likes chai tea and salted caramel coffee! they also both love to get bubble tea!

if they ever have any children together

they would definitely want to!!! so i’m going to say they do. i’m thinking two kids, either one girl one boy or both girls?

if they have any special pet names for each other

i said already but yuki calls kyori “sunflower” or “sunshine” and kyori calls yuki “snapdragon” because reasons.

if they ever split up and / or get back together

hm, i’m not sure. if they ever do split up i can imagine them getting back together. perhaps just going on an amicable break for some reason. i just don’t doubt that it wouldn’t be long before they found themselves together again.

what their shared living space is like ( messy? clean? what kind of decor? )

once they move in together their living space is quite neat. it just looks nice and lived in, you know? kyori has flowers everywhere and i’m sure they spent a long time shopping and picking things out because they were just so excited to live together. i’m sure they mixed their unique aesthetics together in such a cute way.

what their first christmas / hanukkah / etc as a couple was like

kyori is very close to her family so she invited yuki to spend christmas with them after the girls started dating. it was all very cute and cozy. kyori’s family absolutely love the holidays and go all out with decorations and food and presents. her parents bought gifts for yuki and yuki helped them decorate and they kissed under mistletoe. kyori told yuki it was the best christmas she had ever had.

what their names are in each other’s phones

i know you've been getting a lot of asks recently about korean stuff but do you think being a kpop idol is a good career aspiration? what do you think some of the pros or cons are to it?

No worries! I actually know a bit about this topic so I feel like I can weigh in. In general, I think the k-pop industry has a lot of issues that make it a less than ideal career path.

The first is age- some k-pop stars audition and become trainees as young as 10 years old, and have an average retirement rate of 30. In some cases, k-pop idols are trainees for up to 10 years before they actually debut. The trainee system is reportedly brutal- they live full-time in dorms that they aren’t allowed to leave, often sharing a room with 4 other trainees. Many trainees drop out of school to focus on their careers. Trainees are sometimes "encouraged” (read: pressured or required) to go through cosmetic surgery to adhere to k-pop beauty standards, and malnutrition, dehydration, and exhaustion are reportedly common. Some trainees reported food being rationed or taken away from them if they were over the “appropriate” weight. Trainees are reported to wake up around 4 or 5 in the morning and go to bed at 11pm or later. There are no weekends or holidays. They aren’t allowed cellphones or computers. They’re also banned from having romantic relationships of any kind, because it’s important they maintain a pure, angelic, virgin image in order for fans to be able to project a romantic fantasy onto them. In general, the images of k-pop idols and trainees are tightly controlled for the span of their career because they need to play whatever character the label has decided on for them. Trainees use their stage names at all times. There’s not really room for being LGBT+, or indeed, any self-expression that doesn’t strictly adhere to societal norms.

Trainees also sign into contracts that are largely regarded as unfair; the label will pay for all of their expenses until they debut, at which point they have to pay the money back before they start making a salary of their own. It’s reported that the cost of a trainee is around $50,000 per year (this includes things like housing, food, wardrobe, song and dance lessons, etc), meaning that if you’re a trainee for ten years, you owe the label $500,000 upon your debut. Some K-pop labels are reported to take as much as 90% of the profits the idols make off the top, so it can take a very long time to repay that debt. If a trainee is unhappy with their contract, they can easily be replaced because so many people are interested in becoming idols- some companies get over 300,000 applicants per year- and they have to pay back the money the label spent to train them. And of the trainees, not all of them ever become idols- the trainees are constantly competing with each other for the few debut spots a company has.

All of these problems just get exacerbated once the trainees debut and become k-pop idols in earnest. Since they’re in the public eye, their appearance and actions become scrutinized more carefully. A minor mistake, like not smiling at the right time, can be criticized for years by the public. The work also becomes more grueling- some idols have reported that they worked almost 24 hours straight.

And for what? I’m not really seeing the pros. There’s not much money in being an idol. I think it’s easier to get that same type of adoration through being an Instagram influencer, Youtuber, or American celebrity. It doesn’t really open up career opportunities, since idols retire so young, often without much education. Personally, I don’t think it’s worth it, but you might feel differently.

I'm just so curious and intrigued. Why do a lot of people hate superm? One of their YouTube vids have the like/unlike button disabled and I don't understand why. Please explain

Honestly? I wish I knew. I don’t understand the hate that goes on for SuperM, but I think a lot of it has to stem from some /fans/ who bicker about xyz not getting enough lines or not being the centre or not getting screen time or not getting a good wardrobe and i... cannot be bothered to dig into the issue any deeper, because I find it extremely redundant.

Like ... whats the point of boycotting something your fav worked hard to bring to life. Yeah sometimes everyone cannot have equal lines or equal screen time. different songs are written to favour a particular flavour and maybe member A doesn’t suit the flavour, but fans tend to take it as a personal attack on their faves like it’s being deliberately done to undermine the talent that particular member has, which I don’t think is true at all.

I’m not even saying one has to love everything their fav does. You can dislike a song or a concept or a choreo if you don’t vibe with it but it can be done respectfully. No one has to go out of their way to tell them to disband, it’s so rude. I also think it’s a lot to do with the fact that their target audience is primarily USA and because of that they tend to do things a lot differently to what kpop fans are usually used to.

But this is just my opinion. I think it’s stupid to waste braincells on fanwars. They’re still probably gonna sell out they album and if they could go on a tour they’d sell out that too. So SuperM is still winning who cares ☺️

Update: I thought I should add this even though it’s an after thought- a lot of stans think SuperM is a cash grab but it’s such a weird rhetoric to have because everything any entertainment company does is to earn profits. It’s not a kpop specific phenomenon we are run by a capitalist society so to think superm is the ONLY group that was formed to earn money is kinda stupid :D

TXT: Thoughts on Bighit’s new group, the future of BTS (and Bighit)

March 4 was the day Bighit Entertainment, the entertainment company that manages the worldwide famous Kpop group BTS, released the MV for their new group. I watched the teasers, curious what this new group would bring to the table; after watching the MV, I think it’s worth reviewing what the future may hold, since there’s a lot going on. This post is quite niche in its content so feel free to keep scrolling if this ain’t your cup of coffee. This is a fairly opinionated and extensive take on the topic of the groups mentioned (and Kpop as a whole), so read at your discretion.

[Rant #1: Group Comparisons]

PREFACE: to those unfamiliar with Kpop, it’s a genre of music originating in South Korea, placing great focus on the aesthetics of group members, music videos, music shows, and dancing. It originated in the 90′s, drew inspiration from North American music, and evolved to becomes its own genre. Groups or soloists are managed by entertainment companies (as opposed to record labels), so many (but not all) lack autonomy and/or control over their music, general say in the group’s plans, wardrobe, etc. Some groups are more experimental than others, but the industry and genre is quite eye-catching and unique.

So I’ve been keeping up with BTS almost from the moment they debuted, and it’s been great seeing them grow as a group, produce great music (solo mixtapes from the rappers; absolute fire), and get the recognition they deserve. They’re all talented, unique, and have great personalities; that isn’t to say other groups don’t share these traits, but it’s no question that BTS is the most notable for such traits at moment (internationally speaking). The fans supporting them have sparked more debates as the fans increase in numbers, and it can really go either way depending on the fan you meet. Either way, I like BTS, and understand those who don’t. The reason I bring up BTS is because I can’t talk about TXT without mentioning BTS, as BTS is now TXT’s senior group. Now, onto TXT.

TXT, the short-form for Tomorrow X Together, is the new group consisting of 5 members (Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Hueningkai), who just debuted with their EDM-esque EP The Dream Chapter: Star , with the title track ‘Crown’. My thoughts?

1: On the debut title track, I think it’s nice; I don’t think it’s revolutionary or an instant bop, but I do enjoy it. It’s perfect to walk to, the minimalist aesthetic is nice, and they all seem to have personalities. By that, I mean there’s energy from them. That seems pretty typical to expect from any Kpop group, and I’m sure other Kpop fans know that’s given. But there are many groups I’ve listened to whose tracks or debut tracks lacked a kind of ‘punch’. The simple and somewhat cute aesthetic of the MV may not have the actual punch, but I get the feeling the idols themselves are engaging. I appreciated that it was simple, because to be honest, if a debut track is too good, all succeeding tracks can seem underwhelming. With this track, as well as the other songs (Cat&Dog is really catchy not gonna lie), they can work their way up to more complex tracks. This is a quick edit, but after listening to the track a couple more times, it’s kinda catchy. Plus, the lyrics are actually nice, in that it’s not all that different from other songs describing someone’s love changing them for the better, but different because of the word choice.

2: about the group name, I think Bighit favours the acronym-style name, which I do like. This is just a random observation and less so a serious point. Everyone knows BTS are generally referred to just that name, but their other names, Bulletproof Boy Scouts, and their more recent meaning Beyond the Scene, have meaning. I think this can actually make TXT more memorable, because it’s more than just a name. BTS still refers to themselves in the abbreviated form of ‘Bangtan’ (recalling the group’s name in Korean) through songs like ‘Anpanman’, so it helps create an identity. Of course, they aren’t the only group to use acronyms (take AOA, or Ace of Angels), but I make a point of this because they’re not a group from the Big 3 (JYP, YG, SM). EXO and SNSD (although they do go by Girls Generation) are SM groups that both use acronyms (EXO more lucidly), but their name partly has that impact because they come from a notable entertainment company. In the same way that BTS made their name iconic, I can see this working as well for TXT (it also seems really wholesome). My personal interpretation is a theme of unification and obviously togetherness. For each new day, for the future that holds ‘tomorrow’, we can be together, and united in both senses. That might be a bit of a dive, but considering BTS’ naming had similar significance, it would be a nice, wholesome, message to project.

3: They have a really interesting motif with their Introduction Films and group concept, and the members are versatile (in a general sense of the word). Each member has a representative animal and flower associated with them, somewhat reminding me of the different songs sung by the vocalists of BTS (Euphoria, Serendipity, Singularity, and Epiphany). It also kind of reminded me of VIXX, another group that developed their niche as a concept group (meaning each album or EP has a particular theme and songs that match that theme; their latest album EAU DU VIXX has the perfume motif, which implies alluring and scent-related themes and lyrics). This motif, however, is really unique and engaging in its own right, aside from BTS or VIXX. The Introduction Films each dedicate short clips that showcase each member, and the general Intro Film shows them just having fun. Keep in mind that they’re all fairly young, the youngest member being born in 2002. The cute aesthetic may fool you into thinking they’re just another generic boy group (I was kind of tricked into that mentality at first), but like their senior group, this group is building a story with their representative animals and flower. The short story illustrating the boy with horns in their debut showcase was compelling and really interesting; many were quick to point out the wings motif tracing back to BTS’ 2016 album Wings. I see that as well, and I do hope that leads to a good relationship between the Bighit labelmates (I’ll go into detail on that). One of the members, Hueningkai, is the first mixed idol employed in the company (half-Korean, half-American with European and Brazilian ancestry). 2 other members are also good at English, which is really helpful in the market today; what’s helped Kpop groups connect with international audiences is bridging the language gap, so this also means TXT is a group people could understand more (and I wouldn’t say that everyone should speak English and their success is defined by that, but that is the reality in this market). As a brief side note, their dancing seems to be pretty good, which is clear in their dance practice video.

4: as a group on their own, they seem to have potential, but I worry about how they might be compared to BTS. I admit, I compared them at first, but having seen the MV with discarded preconceived notions, I can now say I appreciate TXT in their own right. I am excited to listen to more of their music and give them a chance like I would any other group, and like I mentioned before, they do seem interesting as personalities. I think the problem now is that because they are the brother group to BTS, they will likely seem underwhelming and lacking the ‘it’ quality. I think there are some comparisons worth making that aren’t inherently bad, as well as ones that can be problematic;

Take BTS’ debut MV ‘No More Dream’ compared to ‘Crown’. They are two very different collectives of personalities, and BTS is a lot more aggressive with their darker, b-boy aesthetic. TXT is bubbly and super cheery in comparison, but that’s not a bad thing. That means the groundwork is ultimately different.

As a continuation, TXT is at a different stage as a boy group than BTS when BTS debuted. Bighit was on the verge of bankruptcy, had some scandals (those do exist), and weren’t very rich. BTS’ success decided the survival of the company, but TXT isn’t a group that’s in jeopardy. The company isn’t make-or-break anymore, so considering the circumstances, it’s okay to compare them but not to a large extent. I think it’s okay to compare debut MVs, since that’s fairly harmless, as long as that’s being perceived without the idea that TXT needed to meet the standards of BTS’ debut (and let’s be honest, BTS didn’t have the most revolutionary, amazing tracks to start; some were okay, some are pretty notable for misheard lyrics, others potentially problematic, but they didn’t win awards with their debut songs).

TXT have less members than BTS, so that might have been a marketing strategy; 7 is fairly standard for the number of group members to have, but 5 allows audiences to know everyone faster ‘cause it’s still two less members.

If people can give BTS the benefit of the doubt, then TXT deserves the same courtesy if we are comparing the two. Like I said, BTS gradually progressed as a famous, best-selling group, so TXT should be compared only in the sense that they’re a new boy group under the same entertainment company.

Once I listened to the debut track ‘Crown’, the rapping style greatly differed from BTS’ rap line. They’re more in-tune with melodic rapping over RM, J-Hope, and Suga’s fast-paced, hard-hitting rapping style. Even in ‘No More Dream’ (Jungkook when he still rapped), they’re much more intense compared to TXT’s rappers. You can compare them, but it’s not fair to say anything along the lines of TXT’s rappers being less than compared to BTS’ rap line, since the styles are almost polar opposites.

What it also boils down to is the fact that TXT is debuting in 2019 and not 2013. 2019 can be marked as a new era for Kpop, especially with all that happened in 2018, and doesn’t border on 2nd generation like BTS did. You could say 2010’s onward is 2nd generation Kpop, while 2013/4 (give or take? I’m a little rough with my years when it comes to Kpop generations and haven’t found a concrete chronology so my interpretation here is mostly speculative) is 3rd generation. This is an unpopular opinion of sorts, but 2nd generation Kpop groups innovated in dance/music styles, and deserve credit for such, helping to usher in popular styles and concepts that comprised 3rd generation groups. BTS is no exception in pioneering and creating unique music styles (they aren’t the standard or exception, but definitely stood out when it counted with notable hype tracks like Dope or Fire and impressive choreographies), but I digress. The point is TXT has a lot to live up to, and not just in comparison to their brother group, but also debuted in an era where Kpop is becoming more widespread, more intriguing to newer audiences, and will be very public (considering the advent of social media).

I will discuss TXT more generally now, as I would like to mention what I think this means for the company and BTS.

1: Hopefully, Bighit will finally let BTS take breaks. We know BTS have toured many times and released music often, and it’s also obvious (with proof) that they’re overworked. They’re so professional, even when they are tired and exhausted (notably Jungkook), which shows how much they care about their fans. Granted, when the company needed revenue, that would be a little easier to judge, but Bighit is no longer in dire straits. Every member of the group is just as human as the next person, and they need to relax; RM himself has stated that they enjoy doing what they do, but still get exhausted. That’s just normal human behaviour. In ‘Burn the Stage’, you see more raw moments that normally happen off-camera, including arguments between members and moments of physical exhaustion. If we are to take these developments as they are and believe every word of it, then it’s fair to say they’re really tired. With that said, I hope TXT is managed well, promoted well, treated well, and given attention as the new group. It means TXT can be maintained and have presence in the industry’s foreground, while also allowing BTS to take time off. I say that without knowing all the technicalities about idol management, but my hope is TXT didn’t debut for no reason and BTS is overworked all the same. I know BTS is releasing a new album in April, which I am excited for, but do worry they just aren’t getting the rest they deserve.

2: BTS will remain popular as TXT breaks in, so I’m not concerned whether BTS will lose relevancy or not. With the hope that Bighit will let BTS get some rest from promotions and touring, I think BTS is comfortable where they stand. There is no doubt about their fame as I mentioned before, and maybe their name might help boost interest for people considering TXT’s music (having a company name that people know is fairly effective, and how I learned about groups like (g)-idle, who are labelmates of CLC, who were labelmates to the former group 4Minute and successor girl group). I mentioned how I was worried TXT would be compared too much to BTS, but I think there are still positives in that relationship. What I would love to see is whether BTS members mentor the new group, like RM or Suga helping with music producing and such (hearing RM’s demos shows how talented he is). A closeness between the two groups would be ideal, which brings me to my next point specifically on the company.

3: Bighit entertainment has a problem, and could potentially become a part of a greater one if it becomes a big entertainment company like the Big 3. This is where I diverge from solely talking about TXT and BTS to run down what this means for Bighit. As I’ve grown up with Kpop, I’ve learned about the good, the bad, the sad, and the ugly. I personally think having that kind of journey is both unique and the kind you need to experience organically; it’s okay to start off as a casual listener in the process of becoming a fan, but it’s still important to recognize at a certain point that the industry isn’t exactly perfect, or that groups can be good without validation or comparison. Some of my favourite groups are managed mostly by the Big 3, all three companies that have their own controversies and problematic programs. JYP overworks his best selling girl group (and best selling group for that matter) TWICE in the same way Bighit does to BTS, but that’s just one of the layers on this problem cake. I won’t go into the details of the scandal, but once upon a time Bighit had a girl group. After such scandals (one member a saesang, another an actual felon) happened, it became a thing of the past and something most people don’t know about. Bighit doesn’t take female trainees, and even in the time BTS trained, they couldn’t interact with the female trainees that were once there. The reason I point this out is because there is no female group in the company, Bighit cannot enter the league of the Big 3. All three have (or had) groups like SNSD, Red Velvet, f(x), Blackpink, 2NE1, Twice, Wonder Girls, the list goes on. The way these groups have and are being treated have its pros and cons, but nonetheless are being managed. This lack of female idols in Bighit is a huge gap in revenue; sure, they might have more money than c. 2012 Bighit, but one group cannot help a company become as influential as SM or JYP. To summarize, the first problem Bighit has is the fact that there are no female idols or groups, which chops down any potential influence in the industry and diversity in music (since girl groups are endorsed differently and allow for concepts that boy groups can’t necessarily try). TXT isn’t bad for being a boy group, but the reason I hope for a good relationship between BTS and TXT is because they will be allowed to interact (that sounds so dumb, why isn’t this a given). Not having a girl group lacks diversity in the sounds, and that could be to Bighit’s detriment.

Next, I wanted to go over what could happen to Bighit now that they have another group to manage. I’ll save a lot of these topics for future posts, but as I said, the Big 3 have had controversies over the years, and even smaller companies have had their problems. Considering the weight loss programs many companies enforce on their groups and general abuse of power (lawsuits from EXO’s former members Tao, Luhan, Kris related to overworking), as well as dating scandals (former CUBE artists Hyuna and E’dawn), being a big entertainment company also generally has connections to problematic incidents. What the concern here is is whether Bighit is inclined to do what other companies tend to do to their artists when they have multiple artists to juggle. Take PLEDIS entertainment as an example; they’re not among the Big 3, but they manage groups like SEVENTEEN, Pristin, the subunit Pristin V, and SF9. Pristin debuted in 2016, and haven’t had any comebacks since ‘We Like’ in 2017. They were given lots of dance practice teasers like Blackpink before they officially debuted as Pristin (some members came from Produce 101 and the one-year group I.O.I), but they’ve basically disappeared as a collective. SEVENTEEN, on the other hand, just had a comeback in January, garnering lots of sales, and continue to promote and write their own music. Granted, SEVENTEEN is slightly senior to Pristin, but it’s easy to see they’re being managed a lot better than their sister group. That’s the sad part, because SEVENTEEN members would even do dance practices with them, and the members of Pristin are quite talented. Problems like this are much easier to find in smaller entertainment companies, and Bighit, with the debut of TXT, are finally entering that ring. That means that they might continue to let their artists have autonomy (ex. RM and Suga), or end up potentially mistreating their idols. I am not saying they will, but only that the concern is now more warranted.

4: The success of TXT will ultimately determine what kind of company Bighit truly is. Here’s the thing. The quality of many entertainment companies are determined by the way they manage, promote, and support their idols. JYP is considered the best among the Big 3 because the idols seem to be close with their labelmates, they micromanage to almost program success, groups are unique in concepts and member diversity (DAY6 compared to GOT7, where both groups have strong English speakers, TWICE compared to older group Wonder Girls and newer group ITZY), etc., but that’s also up for debate. BTS has had a couple problems in terms of lyrics, outfits, comments made in interviews, but have addressed many if not all of these issues. What’s good is that both Bighit and RM will issue apology statements, which means we get both sides of the story and that there is at least a level of respect between the group and CEO. That alone doesn’t reveal enough about the CEO or company though. I’m not saying this to be hypercritical, nor believe everyone should think about this kind of thing when listening to music by a Kpop group; the point is, at least for me, knowing the state the idols are in, because often idols don’t get much control over what they do and could be overworked behind the scenes. They have to pay back the companies for the training and other privileges granted, and even those conditions may not be the best; well-known companies are more transparent nowadays because we see how everyone else is managed, but that’s not the case for BTS or Bighit.

If TXT succeeds in a similar fashion that BTS did, that may open up the playing field for Bighit. Maybe they’ll bring back female trainees, and possibly expand the number of groups they manage if revenue begins to come in steadily. The reason Bighit hasn’t been able to enter the stratum where the Big 3 sit is because they only had one avenue for revenue (BTS), until now. Bighit borders on young as an entertainment company (established in early 2000s), so the company not only lacks the number of years the other ones had to experiment (like SM), alongside the problem of no diversity as a company. To conclude, TXT’s promotions and journey as Bighit’s new group will determine whether Bighit is a problematic company or not, because we will now have another group to see being managed and promoted. We have the precedent of BTS, and I personally hope TXT isn’t mistreated.

Conclusion? This took way too long to write, but I think when I’m considering the prospect of TXT, I’ve considered what it means on grander scales too. The reason it’s worth noting TXT’s debut is for all reasons mentioned; what it means for Bighit, BTS, and TXT themselves. All in all, I’m going to listen to more of TXT’s music and see what the future holds for them, since I see potential in the group’s success and potential for them to be engaging as idols.

When you got up that morning, you were perfectly rested and warm. Outside it was snowing peacefully, and you sipped your tea by the window, watching the snow flakes dance in the air. It was a Sunday and you had already decorated the entire house with Christmas items. It looked great. Lastly, you decided it would never fully be December if you didn't have cookies in the house. You were excited to bake. It had been a great day so far. Until you opened your fridge and realized you had no eggs at home.

You were stubborn, and when you were planning on making cookies, you were going to make them, one way or another. You thought about going out and buying a carton of eggs. Then you realized, it was Sunday. The shops were closed. You debated whether to go to your friend's place just a few minutes away and ask her for some eggs. But when you glanced out the window, your idea seemed not so great all of a sudden. The snow had become much heavier since the morning, the flakes having changed into big, white lumps that made it difficult to even see in front of you.

What a great excuse to ring the cute neighbor's doorbell. He had lived in the same house as you for a year now, but you had never really gotten to know him. Occasionally, you chatted in the elevator, or greeted each other when you met at the grocery store across the street. It was a shame you had never had the chance to talk to him more. But now you did.

Fixing your fluffy jumper, you walked out your apartment's door, straight down the hall. You grinned at the excitement of seeing him. You wondered, was he someone to wear ugly Christmas jumpers? Did he like the season? Would he be willing to give you some eggs in exchange for cookies? A little nervous, you rang his doorbell.

“Coming!” you heard him call from inside. Three seconds later, the door swung open. Your mouth parted slightly when you saw him. Not because he looked so good (which he certainly did). Because he was dressed as if he was going on an expedition to North Pole. He was hiding his hands in the sleeves of his thick jacket, a fluffy scarf covering his chin. His hair was sticking out of his beanie a little, looking soft as always.

“Oh…,” you started, “Are you going somewhere?”

“I'm not,” he answered right away. You tilted your head in confusion. “My heater broke.”

You couldn't help but grin at how he was dressed, and he didn't seem to mind. In fact, he chuckled as his eyes lowered to his thick jacket.

“Can't you let it get fixed?” you asked, at the same time feeling sorry for him.

“I will, but the guy said they only have time to come over in the evening,” he explained. Only now you noticed his cute fluffy socks. He looked adorable and you were trying not to grin anymore. You didn't think much about your next words.

“You should come over to my apartment meanwhile! You can't stay here freezing all afternoon,” you exclaimed. He gave you a sweet smile.

“I'm alright, really,” he said. You were about to protest, but something else caught your attention. The elevator doors behind you opened, revealing your old neighbor.

“Miss Kim, let me help you,” he instantly said, watching the old woman exit the elevator, hands full of bags. You rushed to her as well, grabbing one of them. You wondered where she could come from, with full bags on a Sunday.

“Thank you, children,” she said, making you chuckle. She always called you 'child', even though you were technically an adult. As she opened her apartment's door, you eyed your handsome neighbor again. Then, you handed the old lady her bag, smiling again at her thankfulness and wishing her a good afternoon.

“Seriously, you can't stay in that cold apartment, H/N,” you said again, when it was only the two of you again.

“Wouldn't it bother you, to have me hanging around in your apartment?” he asked, unsure.

“No!” you almost yelled, trying to look less enthusiastic than you were. “I'd feel bad knowing you're cold and alone here.”

“That's really sweet, thanks,” he said, and then followed you. “It's Y/N, right?”

You nodded, happy that he remembered your name after all. You showed him the way into your apartment, waiting patiently as he peeled off his warm clothes. You couldn't hold back a laugh when he turned your way and you discovered the jumper he was wearing. It was red, with an obnoxiously gigantic reindeer on the front. Its red nose was a small pompom that had been sewed on.

“Don't laugh!” he complained. “It's the warmest thing in my wardrobe and I couldn't care less about fashion when I'm cold!”

But as he realized you wouldn't stop giggling, he laughed too, looking down at the animal on his sweater. So, he might not have been the biggest fan of ugly Christmas jumpers, but he sure as hell owned one.

“You've got it nice here, I might not leave at all,” he joked. The way he talked made you laugh. It was comfortable, as if you had known him for years. To be fair, you had known him for a while, but only faintly. You barely knew anything about him.

“I like company,” you joked back, and the smile he gave you made your heart beat fast. You had gotten lucky, living next to such a handsome person. “So, what do you do when you wanna have fun?”

For the next half hour, you talked, about everything and nothing. You made two cups of tea, and he explained how he was working at a music label, and was trying to work his way up so he could compose his own songs and maybe even sing for a living. You were impressed when he showed you his talent. His voice was beautiful to say the least. Then he told you how he loved animals and wanted to get a dog, but he was afraid he wouldn't have enough time for it, especially after his girlfriend had left him a year ago. Now the flat was always empty when he was gone. You couldn't help but feel relieved to hear he was single.

“What about you? Do you live here alone?” he asked, supporting his head in his palm.

“I do,” you answered. “No pet, no boyfriend.”

He smiled, and you could have sworn he leaned an inch closer to your head. For a few seconds you looked into his warm eyes. He watched you as if he was trying to read you, as if he was trying to know you better by just looking. When your eyes lowered, you noticed his sweater paws. Of course you had to ruin the moment.

“Are you still cold? I can turn up the heater if you want, or you can borrow a blanket,” you offered with a rushed voice. He smiled, but shook his head.

“I'm fine. This…is just a habit,” he admitted, lifting his hands. How could someone be this inhumanly cute and hot at the same time? Suddenly, he chuckled.

“What is it?” you asked.

“Oh, it's…nothing,” he answered, a little shy. “I just had a stupid thought.”

“Tell me!” you insisted. “I won't judge you.”

He seemed to think for a second, grinning at you mischievously.

“I just thought about how people in movies always have sex to keep warm,” he said. You choked on your tea in surprise. You coughed, knocking your hand onto your chest in an attempt to gain your breath. For a moment, you tried to cover up your shock, thinking about what to say. Was he trying to initiate something or was he simply making conversation? You regretted not knowing him better.

“You know what? I think that only works in movies,” you told him your opinion. “You're naked, after all. How are you supposed to be warmer than if you just used a blanket?”

He laughed at your comment.

“That's an interesting theory,” he said. “But you've obviously never had sex the right way.”

“What's that supposed to mean?” you asked, offended, hiding the fact that you had just managed to not choke on your tea, again.

“If you'd had, you would know that it can keep you warmer than any blanket in the world,” he stated, looking at you convincingly. The tension in the air had suddenly changed. You felt your fast pulse, and the way you tried to avoid his stare failed terribly. Not knowing what to say, you shook your head, attempting to push away the dirty thoughts. You reached for the two cups and got up, carrying them to the sink in your kitchen. It was an open kitchen, and you could practically feel his eyes burning into your back. You'd wanted to get closer to him. But this close? When you spun around, you jumped. He was standing right behind you, grinning.

“Do you want me to prove my words?” he asked, his voice deep and husky. You could see he was impatient, but he waited for your answer without pressuring you, which you appreciated. But after all, you were going to say yes either way.

You simply stepped forward, closing the space between the two of you. That's how they did it in the movies, right? His hands instantly grabbed your sides, pulling you even closer. When he kissed you, he tasted of peppermint tea, his lips soft but his tongue rough. The fact that there were at least four layers of clothing between your upper bodies frustrated you immensely. No matter how close you pressed yourself to him, you didn't feel what you needed to feel. While his hands were running along your sides, you took the front of his sweater, pulling him with you towards the living room. You were a stumbling mess, kissing and trying not to fall over in the process. His sweater followed right away, and you couldn't help but grin at the reindeer one more time. With it, he had shed off his shirt he had worn underneath. The way he added more pressure now and then made you feel dizzy. You let out a quiet sigh, closing your eyes at the sensation. You had trouble keeping in another moan when his lips wandered to the valley of your breasts and his hands toyed with your nipples, then letting them run down your sides to your hips. I don’t really know why I wrote this one on Christmas eve but I just want to share these bits and pieces of me with you guys cos why not? Hehehehehe. Am I being too vain now? Btw have a very Merry Christmas to all. Hope you’re all doing good and having a good time.

Hi! I know it’s been a few days, but as a kpop stan for 5+ years, and a fan of the group involved in the Cup/cak//ke-situation, I have something to say. Hopefully, I can shed some light on what happened as well as kpop, sexuaization, and the fandom as a whole.

(I wish I could insert a Read More, because this is long).

I’m going to start by saying, I have no idea why this whole Jung.k00k & Cup/cake thing blew up. This is not the first time Cup/cake made sexual comments about the B//TS members, and for the most part stan twitter found her funny. If fans didn’t, they didn’t make a big deal out of it, unlike what happened a few days ago. I’m not on twt, so I can’t say exactly what happened and why, but I’m going to guess it was a mix of Jung.k00k being the youngest member (A 97er, so the same age as Cup/cake), a fan-favorite, and maybe a callout twt post about how people need to stop sexualizing the BT//S members that people bandwagoned on and used to justify dogpiling Cup//cake. That’s usually how shit like this happens, and while unfortunate, it’s far from uncommon.

(Personally, I don’t care about what Cup/cake said and she should not have been bullied for it, but I think there’s a major difference between someone with a platform and tons of fans saying something, and someone posting their M-rated fanfic on AO3.

For instance, just about a month ago there was a Korean rapper, SanE, who gestured at a female idol, Re//d Velv/et’s Iren3 while singing a sexually suggestive lyric. Everyone called him out for sexual harassment and on twt people were even calling him a rapist & pedophile – even though Irene is 26. However, unlike in the Jung.k00k situation, no one made mention to the R-rated fanfics, tweets, tweets and gifs that fans, both male and female, often make about Iren//e and her group members, as a means to call fans hypocrties.

Again, even though I didn’t think either situation was a big deal, I don’t think people have to be comfortable with what Cup/cake or SanE did. I did notice a difference in reactions to reactions, which I think is unfair. Anyways, it sucks that this situation happens, that Cup////cake was hurt and bullied because of this.)

The kp//op fandom has a strange relationship with purity culture. I make mention of this because I feel like it has a hand in why Cup/cake-gate even happened. It’s k///pop fans digesting skewed Korean fan-culture norms and combining it with the overall advent of purity culture in western fandoms. For instance, this week, right after Cup/cake-gate Jung.k00k, was being called a sexual-harrasser and rapist simply because people thought he was staring at a woman’s chest. I’m not even joking. You can read about what happened here and here – but long story short a fan cropped a gif so it looked like he was oogling this lady, and Korean antis caught hold of it and ran with it. And thus, Stare-gate.

And again, this isn’t the first time. Usually it’s on a smaller scale, such as Stare-gate, but a few years ago, k//pop went through Lolita-Gate. Like most witch-hunts, it started out with good intentions: a girl group was going to debut and people were raising concerns that the members (half of which were under 18, the international age of majority, and most of which were under 19, the Korean age of majority) were being oversexualized. And then these three commercials (Warning: The first two are SFW-ish, the last is definitely NSFW), all of which starred the then 16 y/o T///zuyu (the youngest of her group) dropped and shit blew up. People began having an actual conversation about the sexualization of minors, but being that the group T///zuyu was in, T//wice, was already experiencing a lot of backlash for unrelated things, fans felt like the group itself was being attacked (And it some cases it was) and the conversation steered from constructive criticism to fanwars real quick. People began pulling in other groups, not because they had actual concerns, but because they didn’t want their faves to be the only ones being talked about.

And then a former idol dropped pics that people felt sexualized minors. Even though she herself was an adult and had spent her entire childhood being the target of sexual comments, the conversation went from “These are disturbing trends in this industry” to “These people (who often were actually put in situations of being sexualized minors) are the problem”. The nail was put in the coffin when singer-songwriter I//U dropped an album where among the themes of loneliness and misunderstanding, and a certain mature, she talked about the childishly-sexual image that was her company sold her with.

(For the record, Korean idols/artists do not have the same level of autonomy as American idols/artists, and when I///U blew up she was pushed with this “little sister” type image.)

And somehow talking about this and satirizing it, made her a pedophile. While she eventually apologized, her image, as well as the image of several other people who got swept up into the issue, took a dent.

There are tons of times where stuff like this happened, some as trivial as a twenty-seven year old woman being babied, to as damaging as a teenager being called a rapist for accidentally brushed against a minor’s chest.

So this reaction to anything sexual or perceived sexual is not uncommon unfortunately. A good portion of K////pop sells itself on being sexually non-sexual, which is why these things happen all the time. Idols who dance sexually also advertise dating bans and sexual naiveté. Idols who promote innocence do so in a way that can be sexually construed. And this isn’t me trying to fear-monger and trash k///pop (I hate when people do that) but I’m just trying to succinctly describe what I’ve noticed in all my years as a hard-core stan.

Something else I’ve noticed is that, these things tend to blow up as a reaction to male (hetero)sexuality. Lolita-gate happened because people felt that these young females were being infantilized and sexualized in order to accrue and appease an older-male stanbase, however there was not a similar reaction on the flip side of the coin in regards to young males being infantilized and sexualized in order to accrue and appease an older-female stanbase. Both do happen, but I feel like when it does it’s not approached with nuance, so the issue gets lost in the talk.

Again, an example: the commercial I posted earlier with the 16 y/o gyrating in the elevator. Completely inappropriate, right? Yes. However, just recently there’s a group where a 16 y/o is singing about something innocent enough, but the breathy moans on the chorus coupled with the oral fixation throughout the video, does give it a sexual flair. And then she began promoting another song with two other girls, that is again more sensual, yet I’ve yet to hear any real backlash. Granted, they aren’t anywhere near as popular as T///wice, but they are a well-known fan-favorite. And their fanbase, especially among western stans, is mostly female. As opposed to T///wice, who early on, gained a reputation of having lots of (older) male fans.

(And even as a fan of this group L//00N//A, I can’t even mention it without being dog-piled as trying to start shit)

Or, like I mentioned earlier, I//rene. She’s very popular among guys, and sometimes gifs of her wardrobe malfunctions circulate the Korean interwebs, and that leads to a lot of nsfw discussion regarding her body. She also has a lot of female fans who do and say the same things (especially her western stans), but the anger is 100% directed at the male fans because how dare they.

Anyhow, because I dumped a lot on you that you probably do not care to read, and this was more a response to the asks I saw you had on Cupcak//e-gate – It’s complicated. The reaction that you see towards one situation is often times not the same reaction you’ll get in another, usually because fandom politics takes precedence over the actual issue.

And don’t even get me started on slut-shaming in this fandom, which either comes from outright misogynists, or misogynists pretending to be feminists.

Oh, and yes, shipping is something often encouraged by companies. I can’t think of any group that’s debuted that hasn’t had some sort of company-pushed ship. The fanservice and bromance has definitely died down since the earlier days when the likes of TV//XQ and SU//JU had members kissing on stage and the like. A lot of it is borrowed from j///pop idol & visual-kei culture.

BTW, I know this is long, so feel free not to post it, especially considering how OT it is!

Top 25 Kpop Songs 2017-OMG It’s Here!

Here it is! The thing that a handful of people who aren’t me have seen... My annual list of the best Kpop songs!

My annual KPOP list has been a top 30 for the past 2 years. But this year I feel there is a drop off in quality after 25 songs. So here it is! Top 25 Best KPOP Songs of 2017 25 Fingertip by GFRIEND- GFRIEND is usually not to my taste but this song is so different from their usual style. It is like music from an '80s action movie. In the video I really wish that they had used their "Fingertip"s as guns instead of the plastic ones. 24 Ko Ko Bop by EXO- EXO did not impress me as much this year as they usually do. The dance breaks in this song were trying too hard to be cool. LOL. But, the parts where they sing actually are cool. And cool is the best word to describe this funky laid back track. The choreography was for the most part excellent, but at times I think the arm movements were too fast to make a proper impact. 23 Save Me by I'M- This is a slow song from a former member of Topp Dogg. I believe he is someone that deserves more attention. I love the layering of the vocals and the changes in melody. The heavy hearted mood created by the song is captivating. 22 Gashina by Sunmi- This song is like a journey. A fun journey with your friends. A journey where something fun is always happenning and the destination isn't really the point of the trip. I think that metaphor will stand as the only sort of review I give this song. 21 Like This by Pentagon- Pentagon had 6 comebacks this year. "Like This" was the strongest. It has a chorus that soars. A lot of songs this year were just simple and pleasant background music and "Like This" almost falls into this category too. But there is something uplifting about it. It isn't just background music it makes you feel something. I get a similar feeling when I hear rock songs like Don't Stop Believin', Journey and Beautiful Day, U2. 20 Reborn by Jay Park, BOI B, DOUBLE K- The year cannot be complete without hearing at least one thing from Jay Park with this kind of sound. It is Jay at his usual greatness, what else can I say? I understand it is an ad for a digestive medicine: Hwalmyeongsu. Such a shame that a good song will be associated with sickness. 19 Whisper by VIXX LR- VIXX LR has a different sound to it than VIXX or than Ravi's solo rap. VIXX LR is my favourite version of VIXX. This song is sensual and melodic. 18 Run The Streets by DEAN- I love DEAN's unique voice. He has a sincerity in his voice. He is not being over theatrical. The lyrics are really dramatic and he doesn't over do it to sound like he is bragging or like he is venting. He is just stating and it seems more sincere that way. He goes into a bit of a scat in the middle, which is brilliant. 17 Energetic by Wanna One- I haven't enjoyed anything as much as I enjoyed Produce 101 Season 2. This show had me falling in love with every contestant. They didn't even have to try to make good music after that, but they did! The human piano was inspired! and that "why~~~" near the beginning of the song just makes me melt. Then in the chorus they do that "got me feelin energetic" with the 'Macarana' type dance moves and I'm hyped! This song gives me a total range of emotions. 16 Kiss Me by WJSN- The cute girl concept usually doesn't appeal to me but this one is too catchy to ignore! It is not even really cute in the typical sense. It's just fun and fluffy. That must be why I enjoy it. It is also very consistent. There is no part that stands out as better or worse than another. It flows nicely and always sounds like it's over too soon. I could loop this for an hour. 15 Dance With Me by VAV- VAV has song writers from SM Entertainment and they put great riffs and runs in this song. Since this was a group that I hadn't heard much from VAV before it took me a while to realize how good this song actually was. It includes harmonies in the background which is something a lot of groups don't bother to do. It really enriches the sound. 14 All Night by Girls' Generation- This kind of sound has been missing from Girls' Generation for a couple of years, and I'm so glad to hear it again. More than that, however, I love the outside-the-box outfits. I feel like a lot of Kpop groups have been playing it safe and wearing clothes that are conventionally pretty. But we can count on SM entertainment have the balls to dress their artists in all kinds of deliciously tacky sparkles and feathers! 13 Cherry Bomb by NCT 127- NCT 127 has made a creative effort again this year. This time it landed a little better than last year's "Firetruck". Every verse and chorus and dance step gives me something I haven't quite seen or heard before. It falls short of off-putting and lands in engaging. 12 I Love You by Bobby- Bobby seems so natural and comfortable in this song. He has the natural YG swagger, even if his style of swagger is a little more youthful and vibrant than other YG artists'. The song has a little bit of the Carribean flavour that has been so popular in 2017, but not so much that you would call it tropical. 11 What's Good by Niel (feat. Justhis)- Niel is an amazing dancer. The choreography in the rap break is killer and Justhis' rap is brilliant. The chorus and the verses both move you to groove along.

The singer puts so much emotion into every word that you can feel it even when you don't understand the language. I think that is something very special about music in a foreign language. It allows you to listen to peoples emotions without being distracted by their words. I don't usually fall for the rock genre but I will be looking out for The Rose in the future. 9 Don't Wanna Cry by Seventeen- This song is very sparse in terms of vocals. The dance is my favourite thing about it. I want to call this the choreography of the year. 8 Stranger's Love by Barberettes X Jang Jinyoung- These girls have buckets full of talent. I'm thrilled to be putting the Baberettes in my top 10 list this year.The tone of this song is so seductive. 7 Dirty House by Nam Taehyun (South Club)- I'm not a K-rocker, but I think this song is so cool. Play it while you are cleaning the house. Ever notice how the word house sounds a lot like the word hoes. Dirty hoes? I kind of like how the song crashes for a few seconds in the middle and then recovers. 6 Fruity by Hyolyn (feat. Kisum)- How can an ad for a fruity drink be such a good song? I hope these companies keep pumping money into KPOP if this is the result. 5 O Sole Mio by SF9- This song is framiliar sounding. The Spanish guitar rhythms are gorgeous and delicate. Can we talk about how they sing four languages in only one line O sole mio Italian, te quiero Spanish, neo nae taeyang Korean, O my Lady English. The innovative wardrobe caught me eye too. Their large shirts are like a modern take on the matador cape. So many details in this song. 4 On/Off by ONF- If you look up the word bop in the dictionary this song starts playing. Someone had to bring a happy, catchy boy band sound this year. We got it from the debut song of ONF! Well done new boys! 3 Sixteen by Samual (feat. Changmo)- The best post-Produce 101 song. This has early Justin Beiber feels to it. Or at least Justin wishes his video were this good. Samuel makes dancing look easy and natural. 2 Wake Me Up by BAP- This song is about a big and important issue, but read a translation of the lyrics and they are just ambiguous enough so that the song can be about any issue that the listenner wants it to be about. Even with the video there are still gaps left open for the viewer to fill in. It's really cool when the same art means something different to different people. 1 Goodbye by 2NE1- The perfect goodbye song. 2NE1 is a group that got a lot of people hooked on KPOP. The world would not have been the same without them. If they had to leave I am glad they left on such a beautiful note.
