Any Way the Wind Blows

eyy second song in the transcript / analysis thing of Hadestown's lyrical differences from this one bootleg I found.

Having done a little research I've found out this is from the 2018 London run, from November 2, 2018, ending a few months before it re-opened back in the US of A on broadway!

(i'll only be including lines that have been changed, for length)

These are the opening verses of AWtWB and they're honestly pretty good. I like how the final line of Hermes' bit really strengthens the whole The Fates = The Wind thing going on because (for me at least) it wasn't super clear on my first couple listens of the broadway recording. I also like Eurydice's line referring to Summer as 'she', I think referring to Persephone as a literal representation of the seasons is very cool.

"you can’t see, but you can hear" is such an interesting line because I never really considered if the fates were visible to the characters. How much more devastating would that be for Eurydice, to have all her hard work snatched from her hands literally by the wind- she has no idea why or how she is starving but all she knows is that she must survive. Do you think she even knows the fates exist? UGH i love it

While I love the apocalyptic vibes this gives off I can kinda see why they weren't kept for broadway. Hurricanes and fires are caused by climate change but it's a touch too removed from the actual concept of climate change to help spark the analogy.

I really like the symmetry of "You’ve been looking since the day you were born / You’ll be looking ‘til the day you go" but that first line especially is pretty clunky. I'm no lyricist but maybe something like "you’ve been looking since you were born / you’ll be looking till you die”

I LOVE these final two lines. OBSESSED. I don’t know why they didn’t make it onto broadway. 

Those two lines relate to how Hadestown talks about art and what art means to people. Orpheus’ song (which here symbolises art) literally changes the world. It gives Eurydice hope for the future and rekindles the passion in Hades’ & Persephone’s marriage. It’s literally vital to the function of the world. But it’s unsustainable. If your head is in the cloud dreaming you need to have your feet on the ground. That's the half Eurydice represents.

Eurydice died because Orpheus was more focused on his song than getting food on the table. In this first half, Eurydice symbolises practicality and Orpheus symbolises passion for life + art. (I say the first half bc it def changes in the second half but ill save that for another post.)

The concept is still there but it's so much clearer with these two lines.

Is me again,Dyna,your favorite cottagecore pan artist here again with a post that should've been here weeks ago...anway pretend that didn't happen! Today I am bringing you the second day of my little challenge of duotober(or..whatever it remained from duotober bahaha.) Well...I am bringing you two characters from Hadestwon,Oprheus and Eurydice!!

Listen,I am a theatre kid at heart(and amateur actress)so of course I had to bring my love for theatre in one of these lmao! I love mythology aswell,especially greek one.Is very interesting and mysteryous! :) Well,one time while I was searching something relating Persephone and Hades I got on Hadestown. For those of you who don't know what Hadestown is,it covers the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice with some great vocals and backings aswell xd ok but What i like at this musical is how the main relationships are treated- Orpehus and Eurydice are treated as this young,naive couple that bearly gets on with the problem of couple life while Hades and Persephone are shown much older and with some problems in their marriage. But either way,both couples learn something from eachother,and the musical is basically just a big ballad of how Orpehus loves Eurydice so much lololol

Jon taking Martin out of the lonely being compared to Orpheu and Eurydices is kindda funny if you really think about.

Because Jon did find Martin just to lose him agaiin. But after he justbkept trying until he found Martin again and saved him. It isn't Orpehus and Eurydices if Orpheus had not looked back, is Orpheus and Eurydices if after losing Eurydices a second time, Orpheus had gone straight back to the Underworld, forced Hades to tell him his whole life story incapacitating him (Hades is stronger than Peter Lukas, he gets to not die), got to Eurydices by looking around and got out without any coditions this time around because everyone is sorta scared of how stuborn he is.

The last thing Luca remembered was being invited to a small meeting in the manor, with his friends Orpehus, Andrew, Edgar, and Norton- who had been acting a little strange for a good while. The table was filled with meats galore, almost like a reward hidden from the other survivors. As he ate with his friends, a mysterious gas filled the room- which initially didn't cause too much panic; till they realized the door was shut. It was anesthesia, it made his head dizzy before he fell to the ground.

He groaned as he opened his eyes, feeling his head throb against the cold wet ground. It was slightly muddy as he stood up, dusting the mud off himself as best as he could. It was just another match from the manor. He sighed, making his way to the cipher as he connected another- the throbbing of his head not fading as he continued decoding. It hurt, almost like his shock was fighting back against him- but he couldn't complain about it now; not after successfully escaping so many matches. However, it wasn't too long before trouble found Luca- his heart started beating in his ears, making this headache even worse. He looked around, trying to figure out why the hunter looked so... familiar. The way his hair flowed, the slightly bleached sage-colored outfit, the faint resemblance of a scar over his eye... It was Norton. Luca was paralyzed for a moment before the impact and quake of the Earth brought him back, looking around for the closest kiting area. He wasn't going to make it, the hunter form of his old friend was too close behind him. He felt the surge of electricity charging through him, as he usually did the red detection light going up his back. He felt himself shutting down, thinking why now. He couldn’t hear anything, the grass cushioning his fall— a sudden pain going through his body as he looked at the blood pooling near his stomach. He winced slightly, tears forming as he saw his friends trying to help him— it all moving so slowly around him. His head continued to pound, trying to shock the other again but it failed— feeling the rocky and sharp bits go around his shoulder; making him cry out in pain. He tried to pry the nails digging into his shoulder off, watching the pet he had made a small effort to try and help him.“It’s okay, go take care of them” He mumbled, watching the pet leave as he blacked out.He felt himself get dropped in another area looking up at the rocky figure. It didn’t make any sense… Why was Norton here? No. Why was he a hunter? He was perfectly fine in the manor matches before… They were friends for a good time as well. Always sticking together, even if they argued. It hurt a lot. As he watched dark spots come into his vision as he finally felt the hot tears fall down his face, the rocky hand wipe them away— unable to pull away from the cold rocks that replaced the friendly warm hand he remembered before. "Why." "...I wanted to escape this darkness. And the Manor gave me an option too. A chance." Luca's head dropped, continuing to get weaker and weaker, just trying to buy his friends sometime. His stomach was bleeding so badly, if the chair wasn't gonna kill him- his current state would. He heard it in the distance, someone messed up a cipher. The loud static shock from the electricity pulsing through it had echoed across the map. He looked up, dropping his weight onto Norton's leg- trying to keep him from going. "Norton please." "No. I won't be treated horribly, not after you all." Norton said, pulling his foot from the other- a mix of black and red starting to surround him before he vanished. Luca cried, a little- was it really his fault? Could he had stopped this?.. Hearing footsteps try and get to him; his body being flipped over. It was Edgar, he was crying- Luca couldn't hear his words; but could see his mouth moving. It was already too late, his vision was blackening out as he held his hand.

He'd been sent back to the Manor... Hopefully.

I just finished chapter eight and I just. wow. I love how you handled orpheus and eurydice's tale, and as a hadestown and greek mythology fan it was such a delight to see another take on it! I especiallly loved the parallel between them and hades/mc, the half year agreement followed immediately by the pomegranate; and mc's pining over their love was so lovely as well (I'm going for the hades route so it was sort of funny, as they were standing next to hades and going hmm I wish I had a love like that, and I'm waving my arms like you could!!! you could!!!!) I'm also intrigued by how orpheus didn't get to use his music skills to impress/move hades; it's an interesting choice.

also loved how you made it clear that orpehus turned because he loved eurydice. it's one of my favourite conundrums in the story: he couldn't have suceeded because he loved eurydice so much, he had to turn around; and he only made it to the underworld in the first place because he loved her so much. and eurydice's forgiveness because of course she would forgive him. i just ahhh!!!!!

and another thing. mc noting how hades seems well a part of their room, of things you'd chosen because you liked them. shdgshdsh I love a good slowburn so much and I am making mc and hades drag. it. out. I'm guessing the future chapters will be about mc being allowed to return to olympus(? and the results of that? I cannot wait!!

ps: He meets your eyes, and it's you who has to look down. To peel the fruit, of course. mc you are so. you are so oh my goodness.

Dragging it out is definitely possible, haha. I am also a sucker for a good slow burn, so I understand the urge, for sure.

As for your prediction, all I can say is wait and see. :)

7 : Favorite music genre?

They didn't exactly have music to listen to? They first appeared centuries ago (the Black Arms canonically existed before Tikal, so yeah, physically, THEY'VE BEEN AROUND FOR A WHILE,) and even then, they were pretty much trapped in this area of land. If they were alive now, though? I have a few ideas. Erebus would 100% listen to Evanescence lmao that's just his vibe. I could see both Orpheus and Lorcan being into rap too. Heavy metal for Ragnar (he really shouldn't.) Not too sure about Akmad and Kieran

12 : Are they good with Chao, Wisp, or any other sort of creature?

I think it would be silly if they had run into some Chao a few times over. Obviously, they're all curious and want to know more about it. Akmad wouldn't be too good with chao, I think. WHY does it keep running off? WHY isn't it doing what he tells it? Ragnar wouldn't be very good with them either, he'd get frustrated too easily. I think the ones who would be best with chao are Kieran and Erebus. Orpehus and Lorcan would do fine, but they'd probably end up scaring the chao away at some point.

20 : What are their hobbies?

Akmad : He's mostly training his abilities, making sure his brothers uphold the Supreme's Will as well. But he's also rather studious, wanting to learn more about just about anything he discovers. Sort of contradicting with his beliefs of the Supreme and all this simply being "destiny," but you know. That's him.

Erebus : He mostly just lurks around, watching and listening in silence (he has a reputation to uphold 😤) but he also has times where he actually enjoys his powers of foresight. If he's feeling particularly mischievous one day, he could even tell a silly little lie or two and watch the chaos unfold. He also just examines things for hours if he finds them interesting?? Its like he's unblinking, even. It creeps his brothers out sometimes.

Orpheus : Punching rock solid walls to try and break them. But also sneaking up on his brothers and starting play fights. He also likes to draw little pictures with a stick in the dirt or sand or whatever's around. Not to brag, but he's quite the artist (stickfigures)

Ragnar : He loves his fiery abilities. Using them for everything IS his hobby. Ah yes, you're cold? Here I can set you on fire maybe. Oh wow that thing looks pretty explosive now that I think about it. Aren't I so cool? With my awesome fire powers? Yes, yes I am. (He also has a notoriously terrible temper)

Lorcan : Playing pranks. That's his most favorite hobby. Making mischief, causing chaos, it doesn't matter just so long as he can cause problems on purpose. He also likes to just wander around, though, exploring this strange land they were just put on one day. He and Doleon specifically do that a lot.

Kieran : Kieran spends a lot of time trying to figure out his own abilities. Everyone else has one, so he must too, right? It never works, though. Sometimes he gets a few small sparks of something purple, but nothing much. That's really something he wants to get better at. But when he's not doing that, he's taking mental notes on everything around him! (Mainly because Doleon has dragged him to INSANE PLACES on this land and he needs some way to mentally recover from the horrors /hj)

I do have an abandoned 6k words for a Feysand retelling of the myth where I wrote Rhys as Orpheus but honestly it makes so much more sense for Feyre to play that part! I don't know why that's never clicked for me but it follows the UtM format SO WELL and I just adore a retelling where Feyre goes UtM to save Rhys 🥺

Also just twist the knife right back at you, I want you to know that in the version I wrote, Rhys didn't turn around out of distrust, but because he was so excited to hold Feyre that he turned around to kiss her before his back foot had finished crossing the threshold 💔

nancy - the mad ones; the mad ones is all about grief and handling that grief and how do you "move on" when you lose someone who is a huge part of your life, and i feel like it would really help nancy. especially since in the mad ones, the protagonist, sam, experiences this loss as she's about to graduate high school, so nancy would really understand what she was going through and i think it would be cathartic for her. additionally, the music is just so wonderful (i've been in love with this show for like 10+ years since it was in development lol and i need everyone to listen to it)

bess - my first instinct is to say that bess is a mamma mia and & juliet girlie. i think she loves jukebox musicals! she wants something that is going to make her happy, but also tug on her heartstrings. she'd also like anatasia a lot -- the searching for family plot would draw her in, and i think anya finding not only her birth family, but a new family in dimitry and vlad would mean a lot to her.

george - i feel like george would love we are the tigers. it's funny, gritty, a little dark and filled with lots of interesting female characters and dynamics. i also think george would just get a kick out musicals with murder? so, she'd probably like sweeney todd and little shop of horrors as well. oh! i also think that she would be really interested in next to normal, especially because of the dynamic between diana and natalie and she'd probably find some similarities to her relationship with victoria

ace - okay the first one that came to mind was hairspray, but that's just because of his hair dfkjbsagklbslgkhbsa. i actually do this that ace would really love hadestown. i think the music style would interest him since there are a few different styles mixed into it, but it does have a folky feel, and while we know ace likes rock music, i do think that he likes folk as well (i think he has wide musical tastes). i also feel like he would already know the myth of orpehus and eurydice, as well as hades and persephone, and just greek mythology in general, so he'd probably be pretty interested in it. plus, if we're being totally honest, after the curse, i think he would see some similarities between his and nancy's relationship and orpheus and eurydice, but he gets his girl in the end.

nick - newsies. i think it only makes sense after we see him getting into hb politics in s4. i think he'd probably have watched the movie when he was a kid (i get the vibe that millie is a musical lady and probably raised nick on a healthy dose of musicals), so when the musical opened on broadway he checked out the obc and really liked it and just...found himself listening to it a lot and suddenly he had the whole thing memorized. i also like to think about nick and bess talking about newsies fsdhbflkdsbgkdlsha
