You Should Know Me By Now

Y/N was a hardcore worrier. her mind was in a constant state of overthinking every aspect of her life. her body, her friends, her family, and her boyfriend dodge. it was a constant cycle of worrying, talking to dodge about her fears, being calmed by him, and becoming free from fear again. it was never ending for her.

dodge grounded Y/N unlike anyone else. when she was with him and she happened to be experiencing a more severe bout of anxiety, dodge always knew how to calm her down. whether it was a hug or simply repeating to her that everything was okay, he always brought a calming effect to Y/N. she turned to him for anything she needed.

when dodge entered panic, she immediately did not approve. at first, she believed dodge was just in the game for the money, and she told him that if he got seriously injured in one of the challenges, she wouldn’t be able to fathom her life without him. however, when dodge told her the truth about why he was playing and the truth about his sister dayna, her opinions softened up. she figured that since he wasn’t solely in it for the money but instead for his disabled sister, she would be selfish for holding him back just because she worried about him. dodge promised Y/N that he would be careful during the challenges. and, against Y/N’s better judgement, she believed him.

during the challenge at the granary, she watched in anticipation as each contestant made their way across the thin piece of metal high above the ground. Y/N didn’t like that dodge’s turn was approaching fast. her mind kept replaying the worst outcome of the situation, and every time it did, she would cringe to herself.

“all good?” dodge asked when he noticed Y/N’s odd behavior.

Y/N snapped out of it and turned to him. “yeah, i’m just fine.”

when his name was eventually called, she felt like her heart dropped down to her stomach. dodge noticed this in her expression and body language, and he lightly took Y/N’s hand in his, giving it a gentle squeeze. “i’ll be okay, don’t worry. i’ll be down in no time.”

she turned to look at him, and she gave him a quick nod before he left her behind for the challenge, their hands interlocked until they couldn’t hold on anymore. Y/N heard ray say something to her, but she couldn’t focus on anything he said due to the fear that was slowly overtaking every inch of her body.

as dodge started, everything was going just fine. he was making it, and Y/N felt like she could breathe. she had full confidence in his abilities.

just as she was starting to feel too comfortable with dodge’s success, she noticed ray take out a laser pointer from his pocket, and before Y/N could react, ray was shining it at dodge.

she looked up, and he stumbled before falling over and catching himself on the beam. a loud gasp escaped from Y/N, and she clamped her hand over her mouth in shock. her body felt like it was going numb. she had no thoughts: just intense, overwhelming fear. there was no other way for her to describe it.

she watched in horror as he tried to swing himself back up. the more time went on, the faster her heartbeat went. she felt like it was harder to breathe. her hands began to rapidly shake, and despite the trembling and shaking her body was experiencing, she began to sweat. Y/N felt frozen in time.

then, when she felt like she was going to collapse from her anxiety, dodge pulled himself up, and it felt like the crowd let out a collective sigh of relief. when Y/N was able to build back her composure, all she felt was anger. uncontrollable, fiery anger. it was the type of anger you couldn’t keep down with all the energy in your body. it just forces its way out.

she sent ray a harsh glare, and stormed over to him. “hey dodge’s girlfriend, how��d you like the show up there?” ray asked when he saw her, laughing. his friends laughed in response.

Y/N bit her lip, and slapped ray as hard as she could. “i knew you were an idiot ray, but i didn’t know you were stupid enough to put someone else’s life in danger.”

ray wiped the smile off his face, and he stood up to meet her. “fuck off, Y/N. it was just a joke.”

“a joke that could have easily taken dodge’s life.”

suddenly, dodge pushed her out of the way and stood between her and ray. “stay out of this, Y/N, this is my battle.”

ray and dodge began to brawl, and before anyone knew it, the roar of police sirens sounded in the distance and red and blue lights filled the area. as everyone began to scramble away, dodge took hold of Y/N and dragged her to safety. her emotions were temporarily put on hold as the pair desperately searched for a place to stay safe.

they ran far away, and they made it to dodge’s car in one piece. upon getting in the car and driving off, the silence became unbearable for Y/N.

“dodge, you-”

“we can talk about it back at my place, okay?” dodge interrupted. all she did was nod. it was all she could manage to muster up.

they got back to dodge’s, and silent tears slipped out of her eyes. “Y/N, why are you crying?” dodge asked after the couple had gotten settled into dodge’s home.

“you could have died back there, dodge. i thought i was going to lose you.”

dodge avoided eye contact. “well, i didn’t. i survived, right?”

before Y/N could reply, dodge began again. “you shouldn’t have gone after ray like that. he could have hurt you. you should know me by now, i fight my own battles.”

Y/N rolled her eyes. “ray needed to know how stupid of an idea that was. he almost killed you!”

dodge slightly raised his voice. “don’t you realize that that was his whole point? don’t be naïve, Y/N. ray knew exactly what he was doing, and he didn’t need someone like you getting up in his business telling him something he was very well conscious of.”

“i am not being naïve,” she started, raising her voice to match dodge’s. “i was standing up for my boyfriend.”

“but i don’t need you to stand up for me! once again, you should know me by now. i can handle these things myself.”

tears fell harder down Y/N face. “you talk about me knowing you, you should know me by now too. i have crippling anxiety. this isn’t new information. how do you expect me to sit around and do nothing about you almost dying, especially at the hands of ray hall?”

dodge’s face softened when Y/N paused to wipe away some tears, and he waited patiently for her to continue.

“when you were hanging onto that beam, my mind was going through every possible scenario that could have come out of that unthinkable situation. i convinced myself that you were a goner. i told myself i had to mentally prepare for when i would watch your body fall and hit the ground if you couldn’t hang on.”

dodge looked down, hearing every word she was saying. he knew she was right. “what would i have done if i lost you? i can’t live life without you, dodge. you keep me sane more than anyone ever has.” she sighed and pressed her eyes shut. “i’m sorry for blowing up on ray. it was a heat of the moment thing, and i let my emotions guide me which is a major no-go. especially for someone like me.”

Y/N wiped away more tears. “not to mention, seeing you fight with ray after all of that and almost get caught up in the police made me even more nervous. what if they had caught you and taken you away? what if ray had hurt you in the fight?” her voice cracked, and she regained her breath. “you’re right. i’m making a bigger deal out of this than i should be. and now i’m embarrassing myself even more by crying, and i feel and look like an idiot and-”

in the middle of her overflow of emotions, dodge interrupted her. “just shut up and kiss me.”

before Y/N could react, dodge was in front of her, leaning down and planting a soft kiss on her lips. he held her head up with both hands, and he kept his hands there when they pulled away.

“what was that for?” Y/N asked quietly.

“hearing you blame yourself for all of this made me realize that i’m the one being irrational here. i love you, so much, and i felt like you needed to not only hear it, but see it as well.” there was a short pause. “i’m sorry for blowing up. i realize now that your anxiety about losing me got the best of you, and it controlled you. i wasn’t thinking about you and your fears, and your real and valid emotions when you saw me doing the challenge.” dodge said sincerely, wiping away the stray tears on her cheeks with his thumbs.

Y/N leaned her head into dodge’s shoulder, and he held her in a tight embrace. “it’s okay now, i’m here. i’m alive.” dodge said, reassuring her.

“i was so scared, dodge.” she said into his shoulder. “so scared.”

“i know you were, and i’m sorry for not being considerate of that. if it would have been you in my position, i would have reacted the same way.”

they pulled away from the hug. “were you scared up there? you know, when you fell?” Y/N asked him.

dodge smiled a bit. “i mean, a little. not during the walking, but for a split second when i was holding on with one arm, i got scared. but that stays between me and you, got it?”

Y/N showed him a light smile. “got it. i’m glad to know there’s only one scaredy-cat in this relationship, and we sure as hell know it isn’t you.”
