The geometry of architecture in the photographs by Paul Brouns
“The music of architecture” is the motto of Dutch photographer Paul Brouns, but also what he has been capturing in his photographs for years.
Paul Brouns is a Dutch photographer, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Tilburg and based in Almere, near Amsterdam, whose work focuses entirely on architecture.

Layers of Development This sports hall (Sportcentrum Arcus in Wijchen, NL) appeals to me because of its pattern of greens. Each level is more dark green, which is a nice analogy to the development of plants: starting small and frail, in time growing higher and full of leaves. The leaves of the tree in front just started sprouting and will hopefully follow the same pattern of growth throughout this year. Architectural design by Bureau Bos in The Netherlands. An appropriate name in relation to the theme of growth, as bos is Dutch for forest. by Paul Brouns

Crossing Life Lines by Paul Brouns Some time ago I visited Superkilen, a public park in Copenhagen, Denmark. But once I got there, it started to rain and it seemed to go on forever. I almost decided to leave, but in the end proceeded shooting in these crazy conditions. While my wife held an umbrella above the camera, my son Floris (in a red raincoat) volunteered to walk the park... reluctantly of course! The challenge of taking this photo in a way illustrates the difficulties we need to face in our lives. As Floris is having such a turbulent phase in his life right now, I can only encourage him when I say: "Keep going! There are better times ahead!". https://flic.kr/p/2ouHMis

Photography by Paul Brouns
After graduation in 1990 at the Art Academy, Paul Brouns (1967) started exhibiting paintings but also was one of the first artists to employ computer electronics as a tool to create art. Gradually he became more involved with graphic design in the early 2000s. Inspired by the new possibilities in digital photography, in recent years he has concentrated mainly on this new medium.
The buildings I look at, reveal themselves to me, not as mere places to live. I am fascinated by the abstract qualities of architecture, of which I testify by capturing and creating, what I call Urban Tapestries.

Color Sequences An apartment complex in Almere (Netherlands) inspired me to further explore its musical qualities by repetition and seamless integration. I was drawn towards the building especially because of the striking colors of the window screens and the beautiful ceramic tile pattern that covers most of the walls. Therefore what you see is the original finish of the building transformed into an alternate, enlarged reality that heightens its rhythmic playfulness. I mixed up the order of colour sequences which adds some extra musical variation. This image is part of my current exhibition in Almere, The Netherlands, open until 9 April 2023.
