 The air was freezing, but she couldn't feel it. At least she didn't think she could.

 It had been a year.

 How could it already have been a year?

 "-enny? Kid? C'mon, you're scaring me. Pick up."

 She didn't.

 The comm inside her mask started ringing again,

 Incoming call from Tony Stark.

 She tugged it off her head, setting it down on the concrete to her right. It had been a year. One year since her uncle died. (Because of you, she told herself). Because of her.

 May and Tony and her several therapists she'd seen in the past twelve months had all firmly told her to stop blaming herself, but how could she? How could she forgive herself after someone she loved so much was just...gone? And it was entirely her fault?

 She wanted peace, she wanted so desperately to be with her mom and dad and uncle again. But she didn't deserve peace. Not after-

 Benandtheferryandallthepeopleyoucouldn'tsaveandMomandDadaregoneforeverandMayhatesyousheneverevenwantedkidsandMr.Starkjustkeepsyouaroundbecausehefeelsbadgettingridofyouandyou'resuchafuckingburdenyoudon'tevendeservetobealive

 She took a breath. She placed her hands on the cold metal barrier separating her and a fifty-floor drop. She took another breath.

 She didn't deserve peace. But she wouldn't get it anyway, right? 

 Good people go to Heaven, bad people go to Hell, she reminded herself. With the amount of hurt she's caused, there was no way she was going to Heaven. She was getting what she deserved.

 She took a step back, hands still on the rail. She was a ball of energy and pain and momentum building. She felt so much and nothing at all. Her grip tightened.

 A resounding clunk of metal landed behind her. She whipped around, not surprised to see the suit of armor containing her mentor in it. 

 She choked on a sob, his arms were out of the suit and wrapping around her in an instant.

 "Mr. Stark, I-" A million explanations and excuses and "I'm okay's" rushed through her head all at once, but she couldn't get them out.

 "I know, kid."

 She shook her head, pulling away. 

 "It's my fault." He started to say something but she spoke over him, "Don't say it isn't because I know it is. It's my fault he's dead and if Ben had to die then-"

 "Don't say that."

 "-Then I deserve to die, too."

 He shook his head, and Penny was absorbed with guilt at the look on the man's face. She'd never seen her mentor look this upset. 

 "Pen. All the people I killed with the weapons back in the day, everyone who got caught in the crossfire during missions, every stupid choice I’ve made, do I deserve to die for all that?"

 Instantly, Penny responded. "No, no, of course not. You never meant for any of that to happen. You were doing your best."

 He nodded, “And you were just a kid. You still are. Nothing you did directly caused your uncle’s death, you know that.”

She shook her head yes, sniffling.

“You can’t carry this on your back for the rest of your life, kid. I know you can’t see it now, but there’s more to you than this. You’re a person, and a damn good one if I do say so myself. You don’t have to hold the weight of the world on your shoulders just yet. He wouldn’t want that.”

“I miss him so much.” She said, pushing herself back into her mentor’s arms. He wrapped them around her small frame protectively exactly like Ben used to. 

“I know, I know you do honey.” He said, comforting the teenager as best as he knew how. “C’mon, how about we get you back to the Tower, you can have a nice good sleep and we can digest the rest of this in the morning?”

She nodded, “I’m sorry for scaring you.”

“You don’t have to be sorry, just promise me you’ll talk to somebody before it gets this bad again, okay? You don’t have to deal with this alone.”

Ben’s death had left a father-figure shaped hole in Penny’s heart, but Mr. Stark was there to help her heal it.
