Day 23 - 2 May Calzadilla de la Cueza to Sahagun 23km
Calzadilla didn’t have any redeeming features. The food was passable as is the place.
We woke quite early as those in rooms opposite were up and about before 6am. The room was unbearably hot (after all our moans about being cold) so I didn’t sleep. Hot house Carrie slept like a log! Carrie had lost a pair of her favourite socks - and thats all I heard about yesterday….they turned up in her rucksack 😂 It was like Christmas day…
We didn’t breakfast - just a quick coffee for me. I have a very sore blistered toe on my left foot so took a while to sort that out.
We have managed to get rid of all the food we bought two days ago in a panic over yesterday being a bank holiday. Result as our rucksacks were way too heavy with the extra weight of fruit/cheese/baguette etc.
Todays walk was tedious. The best thing about it was our stop in Ledigos where we had a freshly made omelette each. And I had tea in a pot! I remember reading a blog about how easy it was to get decaf tea out here. Forget it - I think I have found one place in 3 weeks that did it and I almost fell down in shock when they told me!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We saw a marker saying we were 373km from Santiago then a few kilometres further down a marker saying we were 391km! What we can say is we are now over the half way mark! Yippee….
Tumblr media
We were surprised to see such a large group and thought it might be a tour group. Actually it turned out to be a school party. I did notice in Ledigos a pile of rucksacks with laminated labels - obviously a guided group having their bags moved. I think the big groups are creating shortage of accommodation on the Camino. Glad we have come on the cusp of this as we both think it will get worse.
Tumblr media
Although only 22km the walk into Sahagun was again hard because it was frankly boring. It was cold and flat but without the beauty of the Meseta. Think the run up to Leon will be like this. I did like this metal sculpture though.
Our hotel is ok. I didn’t spend too much time looking for something better and it is abit soulless.
We showered and rested then headed out. Carrie and I have decided that Sahagun is over rated. I was very disappointed. I had chosen this historic town on the back of reviews etc. but frankly as Carrie put it ‘its like St Austell on a Monday night’! (Sorry Jane). Carrie had been looking forward to Sahagun due to a podcast she was listening to. And now we have a very gutted Carrie..
The highlight is we went to Santuario de la Peregrino to get our half way certificates. Not sure either of us fully realise the significance of it - its massive!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Sanctuary was beautiful with Moorish influence in some of the artwork.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photos of the amazing historical buildings around Sahagun but trust me - the photos make it look good! We did walk into one building and Carrie must have had her sympathetic face on because a very enthusiastic chap decided to tell her about all the historic buildings in Spanish. Ofcourse she understood every word!
We went into a number of restaurants to try and find a good one - but they were all pizza and game machine places. We bumped into Jenny and Mel and they took us to a hidden restaurant where we had had a glass of wine literally an hour earlier. It was Michelin noted 2018 and fabulous. The wall art was amazing - Casa Luis.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now tucked in bed. We got back - I had to get them to put the heating on (its only 3 degrees outside) and then we had a nightcap…. 😄

Day 17 - Burgos
It was a rest day today in Burgos, and what a lovely place to spend it.
We got up slowly, in fact both of us woke at the usual 6 something then dropped off to sleep again, magic.
After several coffees we were messaged by Nicole who wanted to use our washing machine. We got her wash on a short cycle then went out for coffee and breakfast. We were back again to hang her washing out on a drying rack then Jane and I went exploring.
The first place was to find a Santander to get some more cash out. Many of the places (albergues and cafes) along the way only take cash so you carry at least 300 euros with you.
Then we found the river promenade and went through the old city gates to the cathedral.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Being ‘peregrinos’ we got into the cathedral half price. When you travel along you take a Pilgrim’s passport with you. It’s a folding paper document that you get stamped by places along the way to show you have been there. As we hadn’t yet had it stamped in Burgos we had it stamped at the cathedral.
Tumblr media
The cathedral was absolutely magnificent, we must have been in there 2 hours and took loads of photos. They had an excellent audio guide which we used for each of the chapels. Over the years the place has been expanded upon and now is one of the finest gothic cathedrals and a UNESCO world heritage sight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Exhausted by the visit we found a restaurant for a menu del dia which filled us up and made us sleepy.
On the way back to the flat for a siesta we found a cafe that we can leave our bags at tomorrow to be transported on. It’s quite a funky place so we may well have breakfast there before starting.
Our flat is on the 4th floor of an old building on a lively square, perfect for being in the centre of everything.
Tumblr media
A couple of hours of relaxing followed and about half 5 we pottered out to a pharmacy so Jane could get more tape for her feet. She’s started getting a bit of heel pain, probably plantar fasciitis, so is taking all precautions and exercising to ease the pain. We then found a supermarket of sorts and got some food for lunch tomorrow and had a nosey around for a bit before meeting Nicole for a quick drink.
Tumblr media
She picked up her now dry washing and we’re back at the flat packing up for tomorrow. It was my turn to try out the bath tonight, you need to be a bit of a contortionist to fit in!
After a lovely chilled day it’ll be an early night as we’ll be on the road early tomorrow. The weather is forecast to get up to 27, not as hot as further south, but still hot enough for us to want to get our walking done as early as possible.

Day  22 – Viana do Castelo, Portugal to A Guarda, Spain- 32 km
Wow, another beautiful day of walking. The weather was perfect, sunny and just above 20°.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The route was hilly (up 620 m, down 590 m), through forests, in the countryside, along the coast and through eight beautiful villages. A perfect mix.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I walked all day with Tina (Slovenia) & Sabina (Slovenia). Sabina reminded me that photos and this blog miss the majority of the experience. There is so much more sensory loading that is impossible to capture: the sounds around us, constantly changing; the tastes of delicious food; the aromas and smells of food and the surroundings; and the panoramic views; as well as, the funny situations and events that occur throughout the day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With 9 km to go Sabina got a cramp in her foot and had to stop. After resting, some heavy meds, and switching her boots out for sandals, she was able to proceed and get to her room. Because we all look out for each other, I stayed with her and ensured that she made it – no one gets left behind, even when it’s been a hlong day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At Caminha, Portugal I took a water taxi across the Minho River to Camposancos, Spain. I was in Galicia, Spain. Things had changed – clocks moved ahead an hour; it was “Buen Camino” and “Buenos dias” and not “Bom Caminho” and “bom Dia”; tapas instead of salted cod; and Spanish wine.
Tumblr media
From the ferry it was a quick 33 minute hike to my room in A Guarda. It took 11 hours to get to my destination – a long day. The  pain in my knees was starting to become annoying.
I stayed at Albergue de Peregrinos Sao Joao dos Caminhos last night. It was very basic with just a single bed and paper sheets provided, in a dormitory room. There was also a basic kitchen and refrigerator. For 10 euros it was good value. Recommended.

A very hard and long but beautiful day heading to Molinaseca. Two important events. First we reached the Iron Cross (Cruz de Ferro). This is an important spot on the Camino. Pilgrims carry a stone with them for the entire walk and deposit it here. The stone holds the weights in their heart that the person would like to leave behind. The second was that we topped the highest point on the Camino (1,515 m or 4,974 ft.) Oh, and two mishaps. First, one of Nelson’s hiking poles came apart so must walk with only one. And then, Barbara took a spill as we entered El Acebo - skinned knee and some bruising but prepared to walk tomorrow - thankfully a short day.

Lord of the Rings and Zodiac - Pensieri sparsi

No me contuve. No me detuve. No pensé.
— Esu Emmanuel©️, I got so deep into her skin... I sank so deep into her core that I began to mutate; I became part of her flesh, her lustful cells, her trembling dermis and her moist pelvis. I passed through her bones to embed myself in her marrow and, thus, move along with her. My name became her story, that pilgrim tale that took her to infinite skies of glory. In her eyes my desire was cloistered, as well as those warm dreams that, at night, I had between the arms of my pillow, thinking that she was the one who squeezed me. At what point did I lose myself and forget that I needed my individuality to sketch it with my cold fingertips on the canvas of my unusual art? Yes, I forgot that I had to keep my thoughts and voice to myself to give an imaginary form to her presence, and thus postpone her until the end of time. However, I was won over by her magic, caught by her warmth, swallowed by the insane impetus of her sacrum and the agitated chant of her obscene heart. I did not hold back. I did not stop. I did not think. I gave my voice to the offering of love to speak, only, the tongue of her mouth... and, with that, to be closer to God. For, she is God... she is virgin... she is the ceremonious song of the servants of the Most High, while my essence is only the glimpse of the Annunciation that Gabriel the Archangel mused to the womb of Our Holy Mother.

HMS Speedy - launched in 1782, this tiny 14-gun sloop lived a life of epic proportions, embarking on a legendary path of destruction, capturing, sinking or driving into shore no less than sixty ships, sometimes several times the size and power of her own and often singlehandedly, becoming the pint sized scourge of the Mediterranean. On her decks saw the beginnings of some of the greatest admirals honoured by multiple nations. During the French Revolutionary Wars, she was transfered to the Mediterranean where she spent her career under a number of remarkable commanders that earned her fame. Her first commander in the Mediterranean was Charles Cunningham. Speedy assisted in the capture of the French 36-gun frigate Modeste and two armed tartanes on 5 October 1793 in the raid on Genoa. HMS Speedy together with the 74-gun HMS Captain captured another frigate the 40-gun Imperieuse. Cunningham was replaced by George Cockburn in command of HMS Speedy. Speedy joined a squadron blockading Genoa where she she kept vigilant even when the rest of the fleet was driven away by a storm while she single-handedly captured several vessels. Commander George Eyre took over command on February 1794. She supported the siege and capture of Bastia. She was captured and spent only a brief time sailing under the French flag after she ran into a French fleet under Rear-Admiral Pierre Martin. In the following year, Speedy under the command of Thomas Elphinstone joined a squadron consisting of the 64-gun ships HMS Agamemnon and HMS Diadem, the 32-gun frigates HMS Meleager and HMS Blanche and the ship-sloop HMS Peterel. She participated in capturing several ships. Elphinstone was succeeded by Commander Hugh Downman in August 1797. During his time, Speedy captured five privateers, Domine Lucas on 1 August, Palma on 13 September, Pilgrim (Peregrino) on December, Virgen de los Remedios (alias Olivia) on 1 January 1798; and, San Jose (San José; alias Garalin) on 15 March. On 3 February 1798, Speedy with a newly captured Spanish prize encountered the 18-gun privateer Papillon. Speedy and her prize managed to drive off Papillon. Downman was replaced on January of the following year by Commander Jahleel Brenton. On 9 August 1799, Speedy together with a British privateer Defender captured three small Spanish ships. On 3 October, speedy successfully drove off ten small gunboats that were attempting to attack a British Convoy, and foiled another attempt of twelve ships three days later. On March 1800 Commander Lord Thomas Cochrane, 10th earl of Dundonald, took over command of Speedy. Thomas Cochrane was a legendary sailor himself. At first Cochrane was unimpressed with Speedy. But he would embark on a path of destruction while commanding the tiny sloop. On 11 May, Speedy captured the French privateer Intrépide off the coast Cagliari. She captured another seven or eight vessels that June and July, including the 10-gun privateer Asuncion off Bastia on 25 June and the privateer Constitution off Caprea on 19 July. On 22 January 1801, Speedy was sailing along a convoy of Danish ship while under a Danish flag pretending to escort them. When a 10-gun French ship and 8-gun Spanish brig approached, Speedy hoisted British colours and attacked, capturing both of them. On 24 February, Speedy captured the French brig Caroline. On 6 May 1801, Speedy boarded and captured the Spanish 32-gun xebec Gamo that had a crew four times that of Speedy. In 1847 the Admiralty awarded the Naval General Service Medal with clasp "Speedy 6 May 1801" to all surviving claimants from the action. On June 1801, Speedy joined the 16-gun HMS Kangaroo in attacking a Spanish convoy of twelve merchant ships and five armed ships. The two ships sank or drove ashore all of the Spanish ships with the exception of three brigs which they captured. By July of 1801, Speedy had captured or sunk fifty-three enemy ships under Lord Cochrane alone, becoming the scourge of the Mediterranean. On 3 July, a formidable French squadron under the command of Rear-Admiral Charles-Alexandre Léon Durand Linois sighted and chased Speedy. Despite efforts to lighten the ship, the French caught up and after narrowly avoiding the broadside fire of Desaix, Cochrane struck his colours. In the end, it took three French ships of the line with 70 guns each to stop the tiny sloop's rampage. Cochrane was taken aboard one of the ships the Desaix whose captain, Christy-Pallière, refused to accept Cochrane's sword out of respect. Painting by Geoff Hunt

Just over a year ago, I embarked on the Camino de Santiago - Primitivo Route in Spain with my boyfriend. Neither of us is Christian, but you don't need to be Christian to walk the pilgrimage routes in Spain. He was doing it for the adventure, but I was doing it to open myself to something spiritual.
I had no expectations when I began upon it, and for a long time, I spent the journey enjoying the stunning landscape around me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Every day taught me gratitude for the land, for water, for shade, for the people around me. The Camino Primitivo is nothing like other popular routes - this one has days where you go from one village to the next, and there is nothing between each stop. Not many peregrinos to be found.
It wasn't until the 9th day out, on our way to Lugo, that I was inspired to open myself intentionally. We were walking an optional path that took us through San Salvador de Soutomerille. The walk was beautiful: the sun blazed in the mid-September sky, but there were so many green trees to shade us. A chestnut tree overtook the low stone wall at one point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nature overtaking ruins is inspiring. That we have left our mark as humans, but the world will find a way to reclaim when we are long gone.
The back of an old church greeted us at one point, and we decided that if there was a clearing in front, we would take a moment to enjoy the space there.
I could feel something important in the air. At that point, I really wanted to connect with the God of my family and his. I didn't know his rituals; I was raised Lutheran, and when it came time to undergo Confirmation, I stepped back and was never confirmed.
So I asked, if anyone was there, please show me.
We rounded the church and for the first time in hours, blessed sun greeted us. Something was definitely there.
Tumblr media
The energy didn't feel masculine, though. I felt absolute warmth and connection, but not with any Abrahamic god.
Galicia is very proud of its Celtic heritage, and though this church was a Catholic church, these lands were once walked by other people with other gods.
I still don't know what the feeling was. I had worked with Brigid in the past, four or five years ago. Was this her, or another goddess? Was it the spirits living here? Was it simply myself opening up to the world around me again?
I didn't ask further, and I didn't investigate. My boyfriend and I sat in the clearing and enjoyed our lunch, and I was happy to know I had felt something.
It doesn't matter if I never know what the presence was. Perhaps if Brigid works with me again, I will ask; but it's enough that this energy was there for me when I asked for it.
I found what I had been looking for, though I'm only coming to realize it now.

@nunukim-182  here it is! Thank you very much for waiting, I'm sorry it took me so long.   Enjoy it!
Since the kindergarten, I have been a child with difficulties to communicating. I commented on Star Wars all the time, it was very difficult for someone to put up with me. Actually, apart from my parents and my sister Esther, only one person cared about me. Her name was Rebecca Tucker.
Red was my best friend since kindergarten. she always sat next to me at lunch, in class, we worked together at school, and we also sat together on the bus. We even brought different fruits to lunch to exchange them, we went together to the cinema and to a Casa Bonita, it was funny. But all that changed when we got to fourth grade.
in this grade, everyone tried to appear "mature" and groups (some forced) were formed to "improve the interaction". There were the populars, the emos, the ugly ones, among others. red was adjusted immediately between the "hot girls" and me, obviously, with the nerds. I thought this wasnt going to affect our friendship, but as soon as the groups were defined, she started to avoid me and left with her friends.
Although Red avoided me, I continued to observe her and I realized that all our years of friendship were not in vain. I remember one time that she suggested seeing "the attack of the clones" to her friends when they chose which movie to watch at the cinema. Obviously her friends rejected that option for being a "nerd" movie and Red smiled falsely.
Our biggest interaction was on a school trip to "Villarejo dos peregrinos" where everyone said it was 1864. Our teacher told us to make pairs, and Red grabbed my hand instantly. I was surprised, because we hadnt spoken in months. During the tour, we talked as much as we could and i enjoyed her company a lot.
I didn’t realize, but I missed her a lot. Her voice, her smell, her hair, how she played with his strands as he spoke, the freckles she tried to hide with makeup, the perfume she wore ...
all those things that I missed, were back ...
but my joy evaporated as soon as the armed men invaded the place and threatened us.
I stood in front of her when they sat us on the floor, to prevent her from getting hurt. After the men were arrested, Red was so grateful that she sat with me back on the bus, and she forgot her friends during the trip, which sadly lasted only a few hours, and we kept talking. when we arrived, there was still a lot to talk about...
I thought she would continue talking to me later, but no, she was with his friends again. Even so, all those memories would follow my memory.
Even without her, I was not alone all this time. I started sitting at lunch with my friend Bradley, who was also a fan of galaxy wars, and with whom I had many things in common. I can say that at the time Red avoided me, he was my best friend.
besides him, I started to get together with Craig, Token, Tweek, Jimmy and Clyde. Somehow, I fit into their group, and among all of them, Clyde became a close friend. I confess that I felt betrayed when he started dating Red. However, thanks to Master Yoda, his engagement didnt last long.
at some point, I even played with eric, and ended up in Somalia, on a french ship with my laser sword, a heroic moment.
Over time, my interactions with Red decreased. some of her friends discovered her looking at me at lunch, and they started bothering her with that.
one day there was a talk about yaoi art at school and they showed images of Tweek and Craig, doing things that they normally don’t do. unlike the others, I was familiar with this topic and knew very well that tweek and craig were not really gay. I mean, there are a thosands of fanarts and fanfics about obi-wan x Anakin and Spock x Kirk and they are not really homosexual ...
During this event, I saw Red. She behaved like the other girls and found everything very nice. I dont doubt that when returning home, she looked for the two previous couples.
I thought Tweek and Craig were not really gays until they both ended up in front of the whole school. I was surprised with everything Tweek said, never imagined that Craig would be capable of all those things that Tweek said. I was also curious to know who Michael was, who apparently had been guilty of the separation.
The next day, Craig lost the class and Tweek appeared, but he looked very discouraged. Red also looked sad, it was as if the relationship of those two gave her hope for something.
But the next day, Tweek and Craig arrived at school holding hands, to the astonishment of everyone, including myself. Despite the surprise, I was glad that they were together again.
¿Red looked ... hopeful? I had never seen that expression on his face before.
At lunchtime, I sat next to Bradley, as I always did since the beginning of the year. Our table was next to the girls table. I could clearly hear a conversation from Red that caught my attention.
‘’Wendy, when you sayed that every kind of love is magical… you meaned that even a popular girl and a nerd can fall in love and it would be beautiful too?’’
That was not a typical Red question, and her friends noticed it too, so she got everyone at the table to raise their eyebrows. Wendy, meanwhile, took Red's hands and answered dreamily:
"Of course, any kind of love is magic!"
Red smiled shyly and could swear she blushed.
Bradley finished eating and ran away without saying goodbye. I was confused, but I finished my meal too and went out to the courtyard. all my friends were busy doing something, so I decided to sat in a corner to observe.
But before I did, Red appeared in front of me!
‘’Kevin... can we talk?’’ she asked.
‘’of course…’’ I answered surprised.
He took my hand and led me to the most isolated corner of the courtyard.
‘’Kevin ... do you remember that dance we had last year?’’ she asked looking me straight in the eyes and smiling shyly.
Of course I remember it! I smiled widely as soon as the memories arrived.
Flashback~~~~~~
In third grade, we had a dance near the end of the year. I remember well that Red decided to dance with Token, and I was sitting, feeling excluded. No girl wanted to dance with me, and I did not want to dance with anyone else.
It was like this until a girl dressed in a vulgar manner began to kiss several boys, including Token, who left Red aside to go with her.
Red was upset and sat in the stands. I went to talk with her and ask her if she wanted to dance with me, she accepted and we danced until the end of the dance.
After the party was over, they threw us out of the gym and Red sat down to wait for her uncles, and I sat with her to wait for my parents. As Esther was playing with the snow and Craig was playing with her friends, I was alone with her.
We talked and at some point, she took my hand and told me that I was the coolest guy in the entire galaxy. I felt extremely happy and I told her that she was also the coolest girl in the whole galaxy.
But before we could say anything else, the car of her uncles had already arrived for her and craig, leaving me alone with my sister.
~~~~~~~
I must have been thinking about that for a long time, because when I realized, Red was calling me. When I react, she kept talking.
'' ¿So, you still think I’m the coolest girl in the whole galaxy? '' she asked, holding my hands in his.
I thought about it a little. Even after she had avoided me, she was still the coolest girl I had ever met.
‘’ Of course, you are and always will be the coolest girl in the galaxy, and the planets beyond’’ I said without letting go her hands.
She smiled as she looked our joined hands.
‘’ you know kevin ... I still thinking that you’re the coolest guy in all the galaxies and I ... I like you, you know?’’
I was shocked. I also liked her too, actually, I always liked her, even after she started to ignore me.
‘’I… I…’’ I failed to form some phrase.
‘’So ... kevin ... what if you're Han Solo and I'm Princess Leia?’’ she suggested, winking at me.
I smiled. I had not thought of rejecting her, and now, less! she used a low blow!
-yes red! she smiled and hugged me.
As we parted, she grabbed my face, pulled her close and closed her eyes. Before I understood what was happening, our lips joined in a kiss. I felt very excited, it was silly, but in the end it was my first kiss.
‘’let's Rock!’’ she said after kissing me. We ran hand in hand to the courtyard. On the way, Clyde intercepted us.
‘’So ... are you guys together, huh? kevin, I thought these things didn’t interest you!’’ he scoffed, raising his eyebrows. I wanted Clyde to be sent to the farthest planet, from the farthest galaxy.
and somehow, my wish was fulfilled, because tweek and craig passed by holding hands and Clyde ran after them.
However, as soon as he left, Bebe arrived.
‘’I always knew you liked geeks! eh Red? I want to be the godmother of your wedding!’’ she said dreamily.
I wanted her to be sent to a planet farther away than Clyde's. But unlike Clyde, she went faster, winking at us.
When we get to the swing, we take turns pushing ourselves.
From that day, Red and I continued together, as if that separation by groups hadn’t happened. She surprised me with kisses and hugs, and I take my hand, as I always wanted.
Day 18 - 28th April Hornillos del Camino to Castrojeriz 20.4km and 170m
After our food I went for a little wander round the little town we were in. Its a very sleepy little place - almost untouched by the outside world.
It was abit of a rush in the morning, 7 people and one bathroom. We went downstairs to breakfast but I couldn’t be bothered. Carrie had managed to secure some food but the problem was the kitchen was tiny - someone was trying to work out how to do the coffee right next to the toaster and in front of the fridge. There was at one point about five people vying for space. I beat a hasty retreat and had a banana and put my boots on. It was chaotic!
We set off around 7.30 - it was freezing fog that greeted us and I was gutted as this was the bit I was so looking forward to - the heart of the Meseta.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But we were incredibly fortunate as the mist lifted and the sun came out. The views were our favourite so far, green flat plains on both sides and ahead wisps of mist lifting under the sun. We both walked in silence most of the way.
Tumblr media
Our first marker below 500km. And don’t we feel it!
We stopped at Albergue De Peregrinos Fuente Sidres en Hontanas which was around 150ft off the path. Most pilgrims were passing it by but I liked the look of it. And it served fresh omelette which was delicious and coffee in large cups (a rarity in Spain). A gentleman (German?) who was sat outside waved us in - apparently he had been there 5 days. He was on the Camino but loved this Albergue so much he had decided to stay there longer. He was taking 3 months to do the Camino.
As we carried on past Hontanas, a very pretty village with a few cafes and eating places, we both were impressed by the ruins of San Anton…
Tumblr media
It certainly was impressive but slightly further down the road was Castrojeriz and that really was an impressive looking town with a castle, magnificent church and a monestary.
Tumblr media
We paid 1€ to see inside the massive Iglesia de Nuestra Senora del Manzano. Our visit unfortunately coincided with a coach load of tourists.
We got to our hostel just before 1pm. A sweet Spanish lady took us to our room and let us shower and unpack before we registered. We actually have a private bathroom… which after the last few days is a luxury!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Carrie and I went out then for a glass of wine and found this really lovely bar - we are well impressed with this town. The delightful puppy was running around outside the first place we stopped at - it wasn’t quite a wine crawl but almost.
We did stop for strange interactive tour of the local church. Very odd…
We went back and washed our clothes, the water was freezing! And then sat in the back garden snd patio - both being sun traps. The weather is beautiful sunshine but incredibly cold. In a sheltered spot it gets warm enough almost to take your coat off. I think we are both fighting the cold. Temperature at night plummets to freezing and there is very little heating at night time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We ate at the Albergue, it meant we didn’t have to go outside but the meal was sparce. However what made it worthwhile was the tour the owner did of the wine cellar. The building sits on top of an old wine cellar and houses the wine press which is huge in the dining room. The cellar tunnel dates to 100AD and although now blocked up - it apparently was 1km long and goes all the way to the castle. The whole place is incredible. He was very obliging and sweet. I wanted to take him with me in the rucksack but Carrie pointed out the logistical difficulties. I would have had to leave my face cream behind and thats definitely not happening!
I was really lucky to spot this Gem of a hotel (Hotel Casa de Peregrinos) which is right beside the famous Las Lajas cathedral in Ipiales. The cathedral was built in the 20th century in a deep gorge of the Guaitara river. I arrived at 5.30 after 11.30 hours of driving and still had time to have a look around before it went dark. For Diner I found a restaurant and took the meal of the day veg soup followed by Roasted chicken and rice £2 wow.
Oct 3 - Foncebadon to Ponferrada, 27 km.
Last night's hostel was Albergue el convento. 4 of us shared a room with a private bathroom. It was on the camino, clean, and quiet. It offered a good peregrino dinner as well as a breakfast. Recommended.
It rained hard last night and the temperature dropped to 5 degrees by morning. This morning we waited for the rain to let up and left about 8:30. It was still raining lightly, windy and cold.
Tumblr media
A brief breakfast in the rain as we ascended.
We ascended in the rain and fog, stopping at the Cruz de Ferro to place a stone at the base of the cross. Maximum altitude today was 1,495 m.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Walking today was just one foot in front of the other as we ascended the mountain in the rain. You could see very little scenery.
I walked with a group of 5 people all day and we just walked, without talking. I also found that I did very little thinking as I gave all my attention to my shin and the path. After walking up hill for about 3 hours we hit the top. When we started to descend, the sun came out. It was like the day changed from black and white to color. Everyone's mood improved as we headed downhill to have our second breakfast in El Acebo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just outside of El Acebo I took the deviation to the right. It took us off the road and onto a scenic mountain path with beautiful views.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We decended 900 m on a rough trail over the next 6 hours ( 17 km ).
Tumblr media
We enjoyed a nice stop in the beautiful town of Molinaseca, designated as one of Spain's most beautiful towns.
Tumblr media
There was a second deviation just before Ponferrada. I went to the right and took the highway because of the location of my albergue. The route to the left is more scenic and longer but you need to verify your albergue location before taking it. I took my time and even then, I had excruciating shin pain by the time I got to my albergue.
I cleaned up, booked hostel beds, ate dinner and laid down with ice on my shin. No chance to explore Ponferrada.
At dinner I sat with 2 French men and 3 Italian women. With broken French and broken English, as well as hand gestures, we had some good conversations including the fact that 2 other pilgrims had shin splints.
Camino, September 29, 2019
From Fromista to Carrion de Los Condes.
Another day of walking the endless Meseta. I come to the conclusion that it's unfair to say that the Meseta looks the same all the time.
Tumblr media
Here, there is the field of parched stubble on the right and dead sunflowers on the left.
Tumblr media
I keep walking and there is a change of scenery. The dead sunflowers are on the right and the parched stubble is on the left.
I wonder what's behind the horizon. Being a generous peregrino, I grant myself two guesses. My game, my rules.
Tumblr media
One hour of walking later, I find out that I won the game by guessing correctly. There is another field of parched stubble.
There is also spotless blue sky above my head.
Last, but not least, there is the sun. As it gets hotter and hotter, the sun starts to dominate all the other elements of the landscape. My backpack is getting heavier by the minute. I start to ponder a purely hypothetical question of what stuff I could ditch.
Tumblr media
My destination is near. The old Benedictin monastery, visible behind the bridge, promises to offer comfort for body and spirit.
Tumblr media
The monastery turned out to be a true oasis. After checking in, I wandered the buildings for one hour without meeting a single soul. A soft chants of the monks can be heard everywhere. During the breaks between chants I can hear only thousands of bees that are swarming around the tree in the courtyard. It's cool, shady, comforting, beautiful.
Tumblr media
Memento mori.
I am grateful to Alfonso VI who in the XI century donated the nearby river to the monks caring for the peregrinos. Thanks to Alfonso, the monks provided Pediluvium Frigidarium, where the peregrinos can soak their tired feet in the fresh river water. One thousand years later, I took advantage of the gift.
I wonder whether there is anything that I could do today that would benefit people one thousand years from now. It's not an easy question.
Moving new video on @youtube by @ascensionpress Father Luke-Mary reflects on an experience he had one Christmas night, where he was able to be Christ in the world to another person. He was heading home from his Christmas celebrations when he encountered a man who had just gotten into a fight with his best friend. The man was weeping, and Father Luke-Mary was able to comfort him and remind him of the reason for Christmas. Christ took on our humanity so that he may experience our suffering and show his love for us. Let’s not forget that this Christmas season. Learn more about the CFRs at franciscanfriars.com If you’ve been watching the CFR’s videos on Ascension Presents regularly, you’ve probably noticed how they’re popularized the phrase, “Somos peregrinos. Poco a poco, vamos a llegar” (We are pilgrims. Little by little, we will arrive.) #franciscanfriarsoftherenewal https://www.instagram.com/p/Br8n5f-HVih/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=j74w6h148ak3
